Per a release from Brighton & Hove Albion’s club website , rumored Bayern Munich coaching candidate Roberto De Zerbi is leaving the club after the team’s match against Manchester United tomorrow:

Brighton & Hove Albion has confirmed that head coach Roberto De Zerbi will leave the club after tomorrow’s final Premier League match of the season against Manchester United at the American Express Stadium. De Zerbi, who joined Brighton in September 2022, following the departure of Graham Potter to Chelsea, oversaw the club’s highest top flight finish in 2022/23 and led the club to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League earlier this season.

Brighton & Hove Albion chairman Tony Bloom thanked De Zerbi for his time with the club.

“Roberto has given us two excellent seasons of service in which he has led the club to new heights, not least our first ever European campaign which will live long in the memory of Albion fans. “We have mutually agreed to end Roberto’s contract at a time that suits both parties allowing us the earliest opportunity to plan for next season, and Roberto plenty of time to consider his next move and his future.

“I am sure our fans will give Roberto and his staff a wonderful and fully deserved send off at the Amex before, during and after tomorrow’s match. In the meantime, I’d like to thank Roberto and his staff for all their hard work in the past two seasons. They all leave our club on good terms and with our very best wishes for the future.”

De Zerbi issued his own statement via the release.

“I am very sad to be leaving Brighton, but I am very proud of what my players and staff have achieved with the support of everyone at the club and our amazing fans in the past two historical seasons,’ said De Zerbi. “We have agreed to end my time at Brighton so that the club and I can continue to work in the way that suits each of us best, following our own ideas and visions, as well as our work and human values.

“I have really enjoyed an intense and challenging two years working in the Premier League, not least competing in four major competitions this season. Leaving now provides me with time to take a break before deciding on my future plans.”

California’s scenic Highway 1 to Big Sur opens to around-the-clock travel as slide repair advances

BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) — A section of California’s scenic Highway 1 leading to the famous Big Sur coast reopened to around-the-clock traffic Friday after stabilization of a storm-triggered rockslide that dropped a chunk of one lane into the ocean and hampered tourism.

The gap has yet to be closed, but after placement of steel and concrete into the cliff, a temporary signal system was activated to allow alternating north-south traffic on the undamaged lane, according to the California Department of Transportation.

The reopening came eight days ahead of schedule and just in time for summer travel.

“Highway 1 is the jewel of the California highway system and our crews have been working non-stop for the last month and a half so Californians can have unrestricted access to this iconic area of our state,” Caltrans Director Tony Tavares said in a statement this week.

Big Sur is a 90-mile (145-kilometer) stretch of the state’s central coast where misty, forested mountains rise up from the ocean. Much of the highway is perched high on cliffs, presenting dramatic views.

Highway 1 is normally a must for California visitors traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco, but the approach to Big Sur from the south has long been blocked by previous landslides requiring massive repairs, leaving the approach from the north as the area’s lifeline.

After heavy rains, a rockslide south of Monterey on March 30 caused about 6 feet (nearly 2 meters) of the southbound lane and a retaining wall that supported the highway to fall about 170 feet (52 meters) to the ocean below.

Caltrans determined the other lane was usable, but traffic was limited to twice-daily convoys in and out of Big Sur. Initially, only residents and essential workers were allowed to join the convoys. A crane had to be removed each time to make room for the convoys, said Kevin Drabinski, a Caltrans spokesperson.

In April, Kirk Gafill, president of the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce, told the San Francisco Chronicle that total losses to Big Sur businesses since the slide were exceeding $1 million a day.

A permanent repair to the highway is being designed and is expected to be completed in spring 2025, Caltrans said.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The WNBA ’s charter-travel initiative — by the league’s own admission — has had a faulty rollout.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert didn’t come out and say, “We made a mistake announcing the league’s new travel plans this way.” But the admission of fault came in the form of a town-hall meeting between Engelbert and the league’s players hours after it was revealed that only the Fever and Lynx would start the season using charters.

On Monday, Engelbert clarified to players why that was the case.

“Flights that are across the country like [the Lynx] going to Seattle, crossing multiple time zones, or flights that usually require a connection, those were the priorities,” Sky center Elizabeth Williams told the Sun-Times. “That’s why New York didn’t go to D.C. with a charter, but Minny goes to Seattle.”

It’s worth noting the Dream flew commercially for their season opener against the Sparks on May 15.

Players submitted questions to the league prior to Monday’s call and were permitted to ask others that came up. Everything from the league’s new media rights deal to charter travel was discussed.

The Sky, Williams said, will be traveling commercially for their return flight from Dallas. Williams said Engelbert indicated that by June, the league will have charter travel figured out for all 12 teams.

On Thursday, the WNBA revealed that by May 21 all teams would begin using charter travel.

The two exceptions will be trips from Chicago to Indiana and vice versa, as well as New York to Connecticut. Because of proximity teams will travel via bus for those games.

After playing their first three games on the road to open the season — against the Wings on Wednesday and Saturday, then against the Liberty on June 23 — the Sky have three games at home. On June 1, they play the Fever on the road.

Rookie forward Angel Reese shared a photo on her Instagram story Tuesday with a strong message regarding charter travel.

“Just praying that this is one of the last commercial flights the Sky has to fly,” Reese posted.

Sunday’s flight back to Chicago from Dallas will be the Sky’s final commercial flight this season.

“Obviously, I think all teams should be able to get chartered,” Reese said. “But I know moving forward . . . going in the right direction, being able to have some teams [chartering] is cool. Within the next weeks, everybody will be flying charter, which will be really good.”

Championship energy

The last time Reese played in Dallas, she left with an NCAA title.

A little over a year ago, Reese led LSU to its first championship, beating Iowa 102-85. She finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

“It feels great [to be in Dallas],” Reese said. “I won my national championship here, so being able to get kind of a start here where I felt winning here, I’m just happy to be part of this moment.”

There wasn’t a championship on the line Wednesday night, but Reese and her new coach, Teresa Weatherspoon, talked about their game against the Wings being the first step to laying a championship foundation.

“[A championship] is what we’re building to,” Weatherspoon said before the game. “It’s Angel. That’s her mentality. That’s her confidence and what she believes in. Of course, we’re just trying to build one day, one game at a time.”

The Sky have 10 available players with Kamilla Cardoso (shoulder) and Isabelle Harrison (knee) out.

Weatherspoon didn’t share a timeline for Harrison’s return but said she’s doing well.

“She’s getting better day by day,” Weatherspoon said.

Harrison played six minutes in the Sky’s last preseason game and had six points and three rebounds. It’s unclear if she suffered the injury in that game or in subsequent practices. She didn’t practice Monday during the portion that was open to the media and didn’t participate in the shootaround Wednesday.

Weatherspoon said Cardoso is progressing well. She was taking shots during the shootaround but didn’t run through any sets with her teammates.

Manchester United will aim to end an underwhelming season positively when they face Brighton this Sunday in the last game of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Manchester United will enter this match in danger of experiencing their lowest-ever league finish and achieving the least points tally for the first time in 34 years. Erik Ten Hag’s future looms in uncertainty but he will aim to rally his players to get the three points from the final game.

The Red Devils finally got back to winning ways in their previous outing versus Newcastle United after back-to-back defeats to Crystal Palace and Arsenal. Goals from Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund helped United survive a late comeback from the Magpies who came just short on the day.

Erik Ten Hag’s men have a Conference League spot at stake as they need to better Newcastle’s result against Brentford to qualify for Europe. If they fail, United will have to beat Manchester City in the F.A. Cup Final to secure Europa League football for next season.

Meanwhile, Brighton will be content with the season’s performances despite not reaching the same heights of finishing sixth last year. Roberto De Zerbi’s men will not be able to better their 10th-place position but will attempt to defend that against Man United as they are closely followed by Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Wolves.

The Seagulls have won only three of their last 15 matches across all competitions and have faced issues finding the net during this period. Interestingly, they have scored the same number of goals (55) as that of their Sunday opponents.

Brighton will have a little piece of history to chase against United as they could be the only team alongside Norwich City to beat the Manchester giants in five successive league matches.

Erik Ten Hag will miss Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Mason Mount this weekend.

Raphael Varane is expected to start in his second-last game with Man United although he is recovering from a muscle issue.

Rasmus Hojlund might get the nod upfront and Bruno Fernandes will play his number 10 role.

As for Brighton, Lewis Dunk is set to join Solly March, Kaoru Mitoma, Jack Hinshelwood, Pervis Estupinan, Evan Ferguson, James Milner and Jan Paul van Hecke on the sidelines with injury.

Joel Veltman’s presence is uncertain. Igor Julio and Adam Webster should partner in defence.

Crack police teams from nations across Europe sit side-by-side at workstations in a constant vigil to snuff out potentially deadly threats.

But this is not Britain’s GCHQ listening post or a Pentagon war room — it is the hub of the biggest soccer security operation in history at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer .

It is expected that 300,000 fans of England and Scotland will head from the UK for the month-long tournament, which kicks off on June 14.

German authorities admit that, as well as soccer hooligans , they are trying to counter unprecedented terror threats from IS and rogue factions spilling out of the war to the east in Ukraine .

And growing tensions in the Middle East are only adding to their security concerns.

Germany’s answer has been to pull together 300 of Europe’s top police brains to oversee the daunting security challenge from the purpose-built International Police Cooperation Centre at Neuss in western Germany .

And the man in charge of the British presence spoke for the first time last night of the vital role that will be played by three specialist officers spearheading the intelligence operation.

Former Met officer Mick Johnson, director of the UK Football Policing Unit, told The Sun on Sunday: “I’ve no doubt it’ll be a well-run machine.

“We’ll have three staff working shifts. That’s one more than most nations, because English fans tend to start early and finish late.

“They’ll work in three-day stints starting one day before games, match day itself and the day after.

“We have a team of plain-clothed operational football officers — once called spotters — on the ground watching fans who will report to our team based in the IPCC.

“If they spot anyone causing trouble, or identify anyone who’s been banned from matches, they will tell the IPCC team who’ll relay it to the Germans who will step in to take action as they see fit.

“There will be three or four games a day so each hub will feed into the central IPCC coordinating centre at the same time.

“It’s a good system. We’ve used it many times and I have to say the Germans are up with the best in the world at organising it.”

Security forces face the task of protecting 2.7million fans, 24 team base camps, and ten stadiums where 51 matches will be played between June 14 and July 14.

Police leave has been banned as fan zones nationwide are expected to attract 12million visitors and have been identified as the most likely terror targets.

In an unprecedented move, Germany has invited 300 security experts from competing nations to the state-of-the-art Neuss HQ.

UK experts will work in shifts alongside officials from Germany, Europol and European football body Uefa sifting data from live CCTV streams and the undercover spotters mingling with fans.

The hub of the operation is a hangar-like 500  sq  metre conference room equipped with 129 computers and a giant 40  sq  metre screen.

Tournament director Philipp Lahm said: “From the outset, security has been our top priority.”

Oliver Strudthoff, director of the IPCC, said: “Each country knows its troublemakers better than any other and the foreign experts present in Neuss will be able to identify them more quickly.

“A delegation’s size will depend on number of fans and how potentially dangerous they are.

" England , for example, will have more representatives than Switzerland .”

Among the visitors to the HQ was Herbert Reul, minister of the interior of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The country’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser, revealed in March that an Islamist attack in Moscow had raised “dangers to a new level”.

Her chilling alert came just days after the ISIS-K terrorist atrocity at a concert hall in Moscow killed 143.

Among the drastic steps taken to protect Three Lions fans will be a plan to close borders temporarily and to ramp up frontier checks.

A ring of steel will be thrown around every team base, including the home for Gareth Southgate ’s England stars, who will be staying with their families at the five-star Weimarer Land Golf Resort and Spa in Blankenhain.

More than 1,600 known England yobs have been banned from travel to Germany during the tournament.

Between 800 and 1,300 police will be deployed around the stadiums at each match guarding three separate security perimeters.

Cars will be checked at the first, bags searched at the second and tickets scanned at the third.

Fan zones are feared to be softer terror targets as they welcome tens of thousands for every match.

The German Army will scan the skies around matches for drone attacks and will feed data into the IPCC central command.

Mr Johnson, whose nerve centre team will be led by his deputy Paul Foley, expects a minority of England fans to cause trouble but shares the hope it will be kept to a minimum.

He said: “With England there are always going to be those who drink too much and engage in anti-social behaviour.

"They might sing songs that they shouldn’t and are generally a pain in the arse.

“But, by and large, they don’t get involved in premeditated violent outbursts and we’ve no major concerns with any of the teams we’ll be playing in the group stages.

BIG SUR, Calif. — A section of California’s scenic Highway 1 leading to the famous Big Sur coast reopened to around-the-clock traffic Friday after stabilization of a storm-triggered rockslide that dropped a chunk of one lane into the ocean and hampered tourism.

The reopening came eight days ahead of schedule and just in time for summer travel.

“Highway 1 is the jewel of the California highway system and our crews have been working non-stop for the last month and a half so Californians can have unrestricted access to this iconic area of our state,” Caltrans Director Tony Tavares said in a statement this week.

Big Sur is a 90-mile (145-kilometer) stretch of the state’s central coast where misty, forested mountains rise up from the ocean. Much of the highway is perched high on cliffs, presenting dramatic views.

After heavy rains, a rockslide south of Monterey on March 30 caused about 6 feet (nearly 2 meters) of the southbound lane and a retaining wall that supported the highway to fall about 170 feet (52 meters) to the ocean below.

Caltrans determined the other lane was usable, but traffic was limited to twice-daily convoys in and out of Big Sur. Initially, only residents and essential workers were allowed to join the convoys. A crane had to be removed each time to make room for the convoys, said Kevin Drabinski, a Caltrans spokesperson.

In April, Kirk Gafill, president of the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce, told the San Francisco Chronicle that total losses to Big Sur businesses since the slide were exceeding $1 million a day.

A permanent repair to the highway is being designed and is expected to be completed in spring 2025, Caltrans said.

It’s one of the most well-worn sports clichés of all sports clichés, but the two games remaining for Chelsea this season are like two finals. Two wins and we’re (probably) in Europe.

We might get lucky with less. Newcastle United might drop more points and we’d flip-flop with them into sixth.

Or we might get very unlucky and still not get in even with the two: if Newcastle also win out and Manchester United win the FA Cup , we finish seventh but without any continental qualification.

(There’s also the most unlikely yet most hilarious scenario: if Spurs lose to Sheffield United and both Newcastle and Chelsea win out, it would be Spurs who finish seventh!)

But from what we can control, two wins are what we must have. Two games, two finals. First up, Brighton & Hove Albion, away.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news: After last year’s impressive 6th place finish, the highest ever in club history, Brighton are firmly back in midtable this year — with head coach Roberto De Zerbi perhaps losing just a bit of his flavor of the month shine, especially with just 4 wins from their last 17 league matches since the turn of the year.

That’s not say that Brighton are a bad team. In fact, they are practically unbeatable at home, having lost just two games at the Amex since September: to Manchester City and to Arsenal. They do ship goals at a fair clip, almost as many as Chelsea do, but unlike us, they have just barely managed to keep up with that at the other end. Young João Pedro leads the team in goals, both in the league (9) and in all competitions (20!).

Unfortunately for them, the 22-year-old is set to miss out with an ankle injury that he picked up late last week. Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, James Milner, Pervis Estupiñán, Solly March, Joel Veltman, and Jack Hinshelwood have also been ruled out. Former Chelsea prospect Tariq Lamptey could be set for his first start in over a month after recovering from his latest injury.

Chelsea team news: Over the past few years, it’s become increasingly rare that we would play a team with a longer injury list than ours, but that is about to be the case here, with just four (4!) players ruled out for us: Enzo Fernández, Wesley Fofana, Roméo Lavia, and Robert Sánchez. Everyone else is either fully fit or at least partially fit for a bit of substitute duty. In fact, some fit players may not even fit on the bench!

What’s also become increasingly rare is our winning habit, but much like our injuries, we are perhaps turning a corner. We’ve now won three in a row. That’s not that much, but we’ve won four in a row just once in the BlueCo era (back in October 2022). And that’s true whether we’re looking at all competitions or just the league.

This season already represents an improvement on the last, but if we can finish it out with these two wins, that improvement will be a lot more tangible and a lot more meaningful.

Previously: After going winless in five straight against them, we finally beat Brighton in our first meeting this season, in the League Cup (1-0), and then beat them again in our second meeting, at home in the league (3-2). But we haven’t won at the Amex since 2020...
