Amazing Day Trips to Take Around Skiathos by Boat

The beaches Mandraki, Elias and Agistros are among the finest on Skiathos

Feel like you’re the star of your own show on the Greek island of Skiathos , best known for being one of the filming locations featured in the hit Hollywood musical Mamma Mia. Movie fame aside, the island has more than 60 gorgeously rugged beaches backed by steep white cliffs and thick pine forests as well as plenty of rickety tavernas and cosy bars in sleepy seafront villages. To see some of the island’s best-kept secrets, it’s best to hire a boat. Here we reveal some of the best sailing trips to embark upon around this special island.

Explore the coastline around the Greek islands with the Culture Trip’s Sailing Trips.

Lalaria Beach

calypso boat trip skiathos

This knock-out of a beach is only reachable by boat from the port at Skiathos town and sits on the northeastern tip of the island. Expect wide sugary sand framed by soaring white cliffs. What makes this spot really unique is the natural rock bridge which spans the sand and arches over the crystal clear sea. The magnificent “blue” and “black” caves are located just before Lalaria and are definitely worth a visit. Be warned, there’s not a hint of a beach bar along this strip so take refreshments ashore.

calypso boat trip skiathos

This calm beach sits on a stretch of unspoilt coastline close to undulating hills carpeting the Koukounaries ecological park on the west coast of the island. It’s roughly 15km (9mi) west of Skiathos Town. The golden sands are superbly soft and the waters clear. There are no watersport rentals on the beach but there is a shack-like taverna where you can stack up on snacks and drinks. As the beach is sheltered by pine trees and off the beaten track, it attracts the odd nudist.

Koukounaries Beach

calypso boat trip skiathos

This is the best-known beach in Skiathos but this stretch of sand never gets overcrowded even in the summer months. Sail into the bay and alight with fragrant pine trees scenting the air and sands as soft as talc underfoot. Thanks to its paradisiacal appearance, Koukounaries has been voted the most unspoiled natural beach of the Mediterranean. Despite its untouched guise, the beach has good amenities with restaurants and small hotels peppering the shoreline. There are also watersports on offer, a beach bar and sun loungers for rent.

Tsougria Island

calypso boat trip skiathos

Stand beneath the clock tower in Skiathos town and you’ll get a clear view of Tsougria Island. It’s only a short ride over to this outcrop with the boat ride costing around €10 if you don’t have your own vessel and cruises regularly stop there. When you arrive, bask on one of four sandy beaches or hike up the island’s rocky ridge where you’ll be rewarded by panoramic views of Skiathos and nearby Skopelos. Tsougria is uninhabited but during summer a slickly-styled beach bar opens on the northwest coast.

Kastro Castle

calypso boat trip skiathos

The easiest way to access this 14th-century abandoned castle on the northern tip of Skiathos is by boat from the town. From there it’s a strenuous hike upwards. The castle was restored after Greek independence from the Ottomans in the 1830s and has moved location more than once to avoid raids by pirates. The gate and drawbridge give this fortress a fairytale feel, while a mosque and three churches are other attractions that sit on the site. The largest church, Agios Nikolaos, is open to the public.

calypso boat trip skiathos

You may recognise the island of Skopelos as a Mamma Mia filming location. If you think Skiathos is green, wait until you see this place. Set to the east of Skiathos, and accessible by boat in around 80 minutes, more than half of the island is covered by virgin pine forest. Olive and almond trees also grow here, while honey is another local product. If you venture into the main town you’ll find a mix of charming tavernas and bars. Or if it’s a spot of relaxation you’re after, the island’s 70km (43mi) of coastline offers tree-lined shingle and sandy beaches including Kastani beach which also served as a Mamma Mia backdrop.

Eat and drink Skopelos

Wander through the narrow cobbled streets of Skopelos town to Rodi, an elegant courtyard restaurant festooned with orange trees and wildflowers. The menu features classic Mediterranean dishes with a twist. Meaty highlights include spiced lamb tagine and pork chops with citrus sauce and caramelised apples. The local cheeses are another must-try and all of the dishes are flavoured with herbs and greens picked from the kitchen garden. After dinner head to Mercurius for a fill of the best cocktails on the island.

calypso boat trip skiathos

Punta Peninsula

With a fine collection of golden beaches, evergreen pine forests and olive groves, this idyllic location is well worth marking on your Skiathos sailing itinerary. The best thing is the Punta peninsula is only a few minutes from Skiathos Town and very close to the airport. Drop anchor at the gorgeous windswept Lazareta beach for a lazy day of sunbathing and swimming with Greek snacks back on board to keep your energy levels up.

Papadiamantis Street

calypso boat trip skiathos

The lively main street in Skiathos old town is the perfect place to let your hair down after a day at sea. Before you decide on where to have dinner, stock up on local delicacies and products to take home from the upmarket Ergon deli which also has outposts in Athens, Thessaloniki and Mayfair, London. Nicos is a limoncello-hued taverna popular with locals and serves delicious grilled seafood. Meanwhile, the best spot for sunset cocktails and a view over the harbour and Aegean sea is The Windmill.

The Best Boat Trips Of Skiathos Island

The Best Boat Trips Of Skiathos Island

Skiathos is one of Greece’s most famous destinations so there is a lot to see and do. Skiathos boat tours are the best way to explore the island’s hidden gems and enjoy the Aegean sea. It is true that the island offers the most organized tours and its worth to try at least one of them.

1. Among the most interesting is the boat trip around the coastline of Skiathos. Tsougria is the first destination for a morning coffee and swimming when you leave the port of Skiathos. After you stop in Troulos , another beautiful beach to swim. Sailing on to koukounaries to continue your swimming . Koukounaries is an important nature reserve because of the lagoon and the pine trees behind the beach. At 14:00 you sail to Katigiorgi port for lunch at one of the two traditional tavernas which serve plates with fresh local ingredients. You continue to Kastro and Lalaria, there will be time for swimming and photos. Finally the boat will sail to Arkos island where you make your final swimming stop.

2. Undoubtedly one of the best excursions is the Mamma Mia cruise. This opportunity to sail to places that the musical was filmed is must. The boat will depart from Skiathos to sail aside Skopelos island and to make its first stop in Kastani beach, one of the best beaches in Skopelos, famous because of the film. It’s a beautiful sandy beach with breathtaking scenery and enjoyfull environment to spend your day . Next stop is Panormos bay , here you will have enough time to swim and relax. Panormos is a lovely beach with clear blue sea , initially quite shallow but gets deeper very quickly. After you will have the chance to explore the Blue Cave, one of the most beautiful sights of Skiathos and take photos of this amazing landscape. Before you sail back into port you will visit Tsougria island , it’s definitely worth as the sea is wonderful for swimming.

3. There is also another fascinating excursion around the island by boat. Your first destination is fonissa’s cave, here you will have enough time to take photos from the stunning scenery. The second stop is at Lalaria beach. Definitely one of the most beautiful beaches you have ever seen. Lalaria has its name from the shape of the sea crafted rocks that the strong north winds have created. It is something unique that you are not going to see in other Greek islands and it can only be reached by boat. The next stop is at Kastro, a magic place with amazing views, a lot of history, crystal clear water to swim and a tavern with traditional food. Whilst it is hard to get to Kastro is well worth the effort. After that you will visit Katigiorgis which is a picturesque village of Pelion, for lunch and relax .Finally you will stop in Tsougrias island where there will be time for swimming.

Many Skiathos hotels help you at the front desk for reservation. Don’t leave from the island before to try at least one boat tour.

17:00 - Departure from the isle.

And now, time for the return trip, full of celebration and dance, as well as many different surprises.

Please kindly note that times of arrival and departure are only indicative and liable to half-hour deviations either way due to passenger delays, traffic in ports, and weather conditions.

Our schedule for the Skopelos Cruise:

08:00 - Departure from the scenic ports of Amaliapoli or Achilleio.

During our departure from port, we are inside the Pagasitic bay and can discern southeast Pilio, with the famous village of Trikeri and the fishing village Agia Kuriaki. We will traverse all of the southeast coasts of Pilio coast-to-coast in the direction of Skiathos’ north face and, after an hour’s voyage, we will make our first approach on Kastro, the old city of the isle which served as its keep. Here, you will be able to take photographs for 15 minutes, after which you’ll be able to enjoy the famed beach of “Lalaria”.

We will make our second approach on the beach that is the symbol of Skiathos and a marvel of nature, “Trypia Petra”, famous for its pebbles. As we leave Skiathos behind us, before us lies Skopelos, and we can admire the strange creations of nature’s strong winds. Before we reach Chora, we will make our third approach to the famed church of Ai Giannis, built on top of a boulder and an important part of the movie “Mamma Mia.” Here, you will have time to take photographs with the accompaniment of music from the movie.

11:00 - Arrival at Chora of Skopelos.

Here, you will have free time to discover the traditional village, the amphitheatrical built Chora as well as the 40 scattered churches found within the city. Follow the route that begins at Panagitsa of Pyrgos at the edge of the port and, through the picturesque cobblestone streets, find your way to the isle’s castle. When you’re tired of walking around the city, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the traditional food at various small taverns around the port under the mulberry trees. Try the traditional Skopelian pita!

14:00 - Departure from the port.

14:30 - Departure from Chora towards the beach.

Now that we’ve looked around the isle’s Chora, it’s time to discover the south face of the island, its wonderful beaches with their turquoise waters, and the green lushness of the pine trees surrounding them. We will pass by the pebbled beach “Stafylos”, by a deep gorge called “Drakontoschisma” where, according to local legends, 800 years ago there lived a dragon that killed the townspeople until no one was left. Then, Agios Riginos, the patron saint and protector of Skopelos, hunted him down, and, to save himself, the dragon dove down the gorge and died.

Immediately after is “Amarantas”, a rocky cape with three curved pines which became famous due to the movie “Mamma Mia.” A little before we reach the beach for swimming, we can just discern a small port, “Agnonta”, the organized beach called “Limnonari”, the large breezeless bay called “Panormos” with its natural, heart-shaped port and, lastly, the “Milia” beach, with its small white pebbles and its characteristic boulders that emerge out of the sea.

15:30 - Arrival at the “Kastani” beach.

Its beautiful, crystalline, and deep blue waters are primary features due to its inclusion in the movie and its view of the small island of Thasia. You can swim in its cool waters, exploring the small caves that are speckled in-between the rocks. After too much swimming, you can refresh yourselves and relax at the local beach bar, which has many adapted areas open to visitors.

18:00 - Departure from the beach towards Achilleo.

Finally, it’s time for our return voyage and time to rest a little, all while enjoying the fresh fruit that we have on offer while sailing back. We now have North Euboia to our left and Artemisio, where the naval battle between Greeks and Persians took place in 480 BC took place. The most magical part of the cruise has arrived…. The sunset. The sun dipping into the open sea, the horizon bathed in an orange glow. Close to port, the party begins with all of you and the crew dancing Greek and foreign dances like one big, happy family to end the cruise on a pleasant note.

21:00 - Arrival at the starting port of Achilleo.

It is possible to arrange an excursion that combines the islands of Skopelos and Alonnisos. Discover the National Alonnisos Marine Park of the North Sporades Isles with its unique combination of terrestrial and aquatic Mediterranean ecosystems, all boasting hundreds of plant and animal species as well as important archaeological and historic monuments.

Our schedule for the Pagasetic Gulf Cruise:

10:00 - Departure from the scenic ports of Amaliapoli or Achilleio.

Thus begins our cruise, moving coast-to-coast and enjoying the beautiful mountain of Pilio, the very same one from Greek mythology that was the summer residence of the Gods and the home of the Centaurs.

11:00 - First stop for a swim

We arrive at the breathtaking, quiet, and deeply blue “Tzasteni” beach where it’s now time for you to explore its waters. While you’re enjoying your swim, your diving, and games, we begin our preparation for lunch by grilling souvlakia and serving them alongside Greek salad and tzatziki. The excursion can be planned to either offer food onboard or at the local taverns.

13:30 - Departure from the beach.

We set sail for the old, scenic Trikeri island which can only be accessed by boat, but first, we’ll see the islet of “Prasouda'' wherein proudly stands the monastery of Zoodochou Pigis, which is in the shape of a cruciform basilica with a dome, built in the 11th century. We will also explore one of the caves of Pagasitic Bay. In the centre of the islet is the monastery Iera Monitis Panagias Euaggelistrias, which you can visit and walk along the pathways of the island among the olive trees. At the traditional harbour, you can enjoy Greek food with a view of the sea at the local traditional taverns.

15:30 - Departure from the Isle of Trikeri.

After you've enjoyed the small island in the middle of the Pagasitic, we begin our return voyage, but with a quick detour for free diving off the ship’s deck before the end of the cruise.

18:00 - Arrival at Achilleio and end of the cruise.

The voyage has now come to an end, with unforgettable memories and experiences. And now, time for the return trip, full of celebration and dance, as well as many different surprises.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

calypso boat trip skiathos

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

calypso boat trip skiathos

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

calypso boat trip skiathos

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

calypso boat trip skiathos

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

calypso boat trip skiathos

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

calypso boat trip skiathos

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

calypso boat trip skiathos

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
