Cebu City & Highlands Shared Tour with Lunch & Transfers

Book this Cebu City tour and visit Temple of Leah

Description

Discover Cebu City’s heritage and highlands in this shared day tour complete with roundtrip air-conditioned transfers, all entrance fees, complimentary lunch, and services of a guide . This tour is perfect for those wanting to go sightseeing and knowing about Cebu’s historical relevance in one day.

You will be picked up at your accommodation within Cebu City or at SM City Cebu’s Travellers Lounge . Afterward, you will make your way to the Heritage of Cebu Monument . The scenes shown on the monument span the period from Spain's colonial domination through the recent beatification of Pedro Calungsod, the Cebuano martyr.

You will then make your way to Yap-San Diego Ancestral House next. One of the oldest houses in the Philippines, the Yap-San Diego Ancestral House is also said to be the first Chinese house ever built outside of China. It was built in the 17th century when Spain was a colonial power. It has both Spanish and Chinese influences.

Next is the Magellan's Cross , which is thought to be the cross that was put up in Cebu to mark the start of Christianity. The oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño is just a few steps away. You will also pray and contemplate at the Chapel of Pedro Calungsod , whose patron is a Filipino saint.

You will then proceed on a running tour at South Road Properties, Colon Street, Fuente Osmena Circle, and the Capitol Site before proceeding to the highlands tour.

Your first stop is the Temple of Leah . Many people call this temple the "Taj Mahal" of Cebu because it is also a tomb for a great love that never ends, even after death as it is a tribute of the owner to his late wife. Next, you will visit Sirao Garden which has flower gardens and mini-windmills perfect for Instagram photos. Lastly, you will go to Top of Cebu to get a panoramic view of the city.

Get a fun-filled trip to Cebu City with this shared day tour. Check availability by choosing a date.

Choosing GoCebu Tours and Transport was the best decision I ever made! Our tour facilitators, JongJong, Yani, and Marvin were excellent, friendly, and truly accommodating! They will definitely make sure that you feel comfortable from the moment they pick you up until they drop you off at the end of the day! It’s worth it to put your trust in them. They will definitely go an extra mile for you! My parents and I really enjoyed our time in Cebu and so I would really recommend them to everyone.

And finally, a review

CEBU CITY TRAVEL GUIDE (Itinerary + Budget)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Jan 15, 2019 | Cebu , Itinerary , Philippines , Travel Guide | 26 comments

Cebu has always been a tourist magnet and its capital – CEBU CITY ,  is a beautiful mix of contradictions, from modern skyline to highland hideaways.  There is no shortage of activities here for travelers, and the city has a buzzing food scene too. Don’t go home without trying the famous lechon ,  trust me, it isn’t dubbed as the “ Lechon Capital of the World” for nothing.  Here’s a travel blog to guide you in planning your trip to Cebu.

CEBU TRAVEL GUIDE

About cebu city.

Cebu City is the capital of Cebu province, situated in Visayas. The locals here speak Cebuano, also known as Bisaya.  It is believed to be the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines.  Locals also speak Tagalog (Filipino) and English,  so asking for directions and recommendations is pretty easy.

Cebu Sinulog Festival

Cebu City is known for Sinulog, the grandest festival in the country held every third week of January in honor of the image of Sto.Nino, said to be a gift to Queen Juana (Hara Amihan), the wife of Rajah Humabon, by the Portuguese colonizer Ferdinand Magellan. The festival dance resembling the current of the river, locally known as sulog, is believed to be of pagan origin practiced by the locals even before the arrival of the Spaniards. Today, the cross that Magellan planted in the shores of Cebu is the poster image of the city.

Here’s a travel blog to  help guide you in your  Cebu City trip.

HOW TO GET TO CEBU CITY FROM MANILA

cebu mactan airport

Several airlines fly between Manila and Cebu (Mactan International Airport) such as Cebu Pacific , Philippine Airlines and Airasia .  There are also flights to Cebu from Kalibo, Siargao, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Camiguin and Legazpi as well as from international destinations like China, HongKong, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

For a list of ferry schedules between Cebu and Manila, Bohol (Tagbilaran and Tubigon), Leyte (Ormoc and Maasin), Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, and Ozamiz, read here :

Cebu Ferry Schedules

Mactan airport to cebu city.

Cebu Mactan Bridge

Cebu Mactan Bridge

Mactan International Airport is about 45 minutes to 1 hour away from Cebu City proper.

I usually take a regular cab from the airport to South Bus Terminal (since I stay at my uncle’s place in southern Cebu) and normally by taxi meter the fare is around PHP 200 to PHP 250 (USD 4 – USD 5) from Mactan airport to Cebu city center. I’ve tried using the Yellow/Airport Taxi before and it was about PH 300 (USD 6) to South Bus Terminal.

The Taxi Line is located outside the arrival area, a few steps away on the right side.  Ask the guards if you can’t see it.

To skip the long lines at the regular taxi line, I used Grab on my latest trip. You can book through the app, there is a free WiFi at Mactan Airport (and yes it is working), feel free to use that. Or you can simply walk outside the arrival area of the airport, then turn right where you can find a Grab booth beside the regular taxi line and the yellow taxi line. Grab from Mactan Airport to South Bus Terminal costs me PHP 220  (USD 4.40) + PHP 50 (USD 1)  for booking fee.

Alternatively, from Mactan International Airport, you can ride the bus called MyBus to SM Cebu City, fare is PHP 25.  However, cash is not accepted so you have to purchase a card worth PHP 200, you can use the remaining credit on other MyBus rides (see schedule and routes below). MyBus is available from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM only at Mactan International Airport.

Once you are at SM Cebu, you can get a regular metered taxi to your destination.

MYBUS SCHEDULE and ROUTES

Mybus fare: .

Regular: PHP  25 (USD 0.50)

Student: PHP 20 (USD 0.40)

Senior Citizen/PWD: PHP 20 (USD 0.40)

MYBUS FARE FOR TALISAY – CEBU, CEBU-TALISAY

Regular: PHP 40

Student: PHP 32

Senior Citizen/PWD: PHP 32

♦  If you have booked a hotel , ask your hotel about airport transfer, a van usually picks up their guests at Mactan International Airport.  See suggested Cebu hotels below.

BY MULTICAB/ JEEPNEY

Commuting by jeep to downtown Cebu from Mactan Airport is possible, however it will eat up your time.  Here’s how to do it, in case you want to still try it. Once you get out of Mactan International Airport, you can walk towards the other building (Departure Hall) and ride the yellow multi-cab to Marina Mall (Save More).   Tell the driver you are getting off at Marina Mall and to drop you there.  Fare is about PHP 8 (USD 0.16), it will only take about 10 minutes.

At Marina Mall, cross the highway and once you are on the other side, hail a jeepney en route Park Mall.  Fare is PHP 8 (USD 0.16). The trip may take about an hour due to traffic . At Park Mall you can ride a multi-cab to downtown Cebu.  Just ask the dispatchers there for the right jeepney. If you want to go to Colon Street or North Bus Terminal, take the jeep with 01K signboard.  You can refer to this helpful website for jeepney routes in Cebu.

From Mactan International Airport Hall in Cebu, cross to the other building (Departure Hall) and exit.  Look for the yellow multi-cab outside.  Tell the driver you are getting off at Marina Mall (Save More).  Fare is PHP 8 (USD 0.16) and travel time is about 5-10 minutes only, a short ride.

Once you are at Marina Mall, cross to the other side of the road and hail a jeep to Mandaue Highway. If you hear the dispatchers shouting “Highway”, that is most likely the jeepney.  Fare is PHP 8 (USD 0.16). Tell the driver you are getting off at corner A. S Fortuna and Mandaue Highway, landmark is Jollibee.

At Mandaue Highway, ride a jeepney en route to Ayala Mall and from there, you can look for the jeepney terminal that will take you to downtown Cebu.  Ask the dispatchers or refer to the website mentioned above.

GETTING AROUND CEBU CITY

cebu view_3

Traffic in Cebu can be annoying, reminiscent of Manila traffic.  Avoid traveling on peak hours (7:00 AM to 9:00 AM) when locals go to school or work and when they go home in the afternoon (5:30 PM to 8:00 PM), especially on Friday.  Also avoid going to South Cebu on holidays (Christmas, New Year and during Sinulog festival), when people tend to go to their hometown as the passenger line at South Bus Terminal can be really long.

cebu jeep_5

Getting around Cebu City by public transportation like jeepney and multicab is possible, but quite complex for a first-timer tourist. If you plan on commuting, you can check this helpful site for jeepney routes.   Take note though that even though it is cheap, it will eat up your time as you need to wait for the right number/route of  multicab or jeepney.  The jeepney and multicabs in Cebu are generally small, so if you have a large backpack with you or large luggage, just take a cab, it will save you time.

That is why I would recommend taking a taxi instead or use Grab.  Usually costs me PHP 70 (USD 1.41) -PHP 120 (USD 2.42) to get to my destination around the city.

Most taxi drivers in Cebu use the meter (except the notorious cabs at Pier 1 who tend to take advantage of tourists by offering pakyaw rides).  Take note that the city implements a strict rule where only maximum of 4 passengers plus the driver is allowed.

CEBU CITY BUS TERMINALS

cebu bus terminal_4

There are two bus terminals in Cebu : North Bus Terminal (if you are going to northern Cebu destinations like Malapascua , Bantayan  and if you want to cross to Bacolod ) and South Cebu Terminal (if you are going to southern Cebu like Oslob, Osmena Peak, Toledo  and Moalboal or if you want to cross to Dumaguete ). I recommend taking Ceres Bus, the yellow bus instead of the small colorful bus so you can sit comfortably.

DIY CEBU CITY TOUR

In this travel blog, I will also discuss how to do a DIY tour of Cebu whether you are a solo traveler or traveling with a group.  I’ve tried solo backpacking in Cebu before and it is  manageable even if commuting in the city is quite complicated.

BOOK RESERVE

BY HIRED MOTORBIKE

From jy square mall to busay.

Recently, attractions in and near Busay , Cebu like Temple of Leah and Tops and Sirao Peak and Taoist Temple Cebu have dominated social media.  For budget travelers, you can visit these places by habal-habal (motorbike), although for safety reasons, I’d recommend getting there by taxi or car instead.

So how to get to JY Square Mall from downtown Cebu City?  You can ride a jeep with signboard “Route 04L”, tell the driver you are getting off at JY Square Mall.  You can also take a jeep en route to JY Square Mall in front of University of San Carlos.  Or just simply ride a cab or Grab Taxi to take you there.

cebu taoist temple 8_4

In front of JY Square Mall, hire a habal-habal (motorcycle) for PHP 50 (USD 1) -PHP 75 (1.51) per person one way or PHP 100 (USD 2) – PHP 150 (USD 3)  round trip to Temple of Leah from JY Mall.  Some drivers might also negotiate to take you to the 4 attractions: Taoist Temple , Temple of Leah , Tops and Sirao Peak for PHP 700 (USD 14) -PHP 1,000 (USD 20.19), good for two.  This is a good price already considering the attractions are far from each other and it’s an uphill ride.  There is no fixed price so negotiate and agree on the price before embarking on the motorcycle tour.  Some may charge a waiting time fee. Do respect the driver’s time, do not make them wait too long.  If you wish to go to Magellan’s Cross and do the Old Cebu Walking Tour,  going back, you can ask the driver to drop you off  at Fort  San Pedro to start your tour.  See DYI Cebu Tour below.

IMPORTANT:   Be warned that some motorcycle drivers at JY Square Mall are reportedly taking advantage of tourists, make sure you talk about the price before riding as some may charge extra for the wait time. Agree on the price before hiring the habal-habal,  you both need to agree how long should be the wait time, there are several motorcycles there so you can always pick.

DIY CEBU WALKING TOUR

CEBU colon 2_3

You can do a walking tour of the Old Cebu starting at Fort San Pedro and ending at Casa Gordon .  Read my detailed guide here with map: DIY Cebu Walking Day Tour Guide .

For safety reasons, be careful and watch your belongings.  Don’t flaunt your camera or phone while walking, this area is notorious for snatchers.  I was able to the walking tour alone, I just made sure to keep my DSLR inside my bag when I’m not taking photos of the tourist attractions and while walking.

Try Canyoneering At Kawasan Falls

The Kawasan Falls is a remarkable natural wonder and arguably the top attraction in Badian Municipality. The three-tier cascade features clear blue waters from the Mantalongon mountain range that plunges into the Matutanio River, with the biggest drop measuring almost 40 feet.

Thrill seekers and fans of canyoneering are drawn to Kawasan Falls to try their hand at the adrenaline-filled sport.

Participants put on their best Tarzan impression by jumping into the fast-flowing waters of the canyons to enjoy a thrilling ride downstream, culminating in a plunge into a turquoise pool of water. Tourists can take advantage by signing up for the canyoneering tour of Kawasan Falls to experience one of the most thrilling adventures in Cebu.

  • Tickets : Start at $30 per person

Not for the faint-hearted, canyoneering is best experienced during the rainy season, but those who aren’t up to the thrill can enjoy the spectacle from a distance or go for a simple dip in the soothing waters.

Admire The Grandeur Of The Temple Of Leah

With a title such as “the Taj Mahal of Cebu," the Temple of Leah is a sight to behold and a famous landmark in the region. The imposing seven-story structure spots ancient Roman architecture, boasting intricate Grecian-style sculptures, granite floors, a marble fountain, and Doric columns.

The temple's highlight is the two golden lion statues at the main stairs and the statue of Leah V. Albino-Adarna.

Situated in the hills of Busay, tourists flock to this popular site to explore the vast collection of art, antiques, ancient books, and Chinese artifacts and take snapshots of one of the most Instagrammable spots in the Philippines .

  • Admissions : $1.79 per person
  • Hours : 7 am – 6 pm daily

The best way to get to the Temple of Leah is to take a jeepney from downtown with route code 04H, which will drop visitors off about a 5-minute walk from the site.

Visit The Cebu Taoist Temple

The Cebu Taoist Temple, located in the Beverly Hills Subdivision, is a famous Cebu landmark built by the region’s Chinese community in 1972. It is a center of worship for believers of the teachings of Lao Zi, attracting devotees to pray, perform rituals, and meditate, but also non-believers in awe of its beautiful architecture and façade.

Guests can climb the 81 steps of the temple on winding routes to the top, where they'll enjoy panoramic views of Cebu City and Mactan Island. There is also a library, chapel, and souvenir shop in the temple complex for those who wish to leave with a keepsake.

  • Admissions : Free
  • Hours : 8 am – 5 pm daily

The Cebu Taoist Temple is a highly sacred place. Tourists who wish to visit it are advised to heed the dressing guidelines and show respect by avoiding "indecent" attire like sleeveless tops, slippers, or shorts.

Dive With The Sharks On Malapascua Island

Malapascua is a tiny island in north Cebu, famous for its excellent diving spots. The island draws locals and tourists alike, curious to explore its rich underwater scenery, awash with vibrant coral reefs and marine biodiversity.

Vacationers will be left in awe of the rare encounters with astounding species like thresher sharks, blue ring octopus, hammerhead sharks, and manta rays.

Malapascua Island is the perfect getaway for budget travelers looking for a beach experience and a great alternative to more commercialized spots like Alona Beach, Bohol, and Boracay, Aklan.

Enjoy Retail Therapy At Ayala Center Shopping Mall

Shopping is a top tourist pastime in the Philippines, and while in Cebu, shopaholics can stop by the Ayala Center Shopping Mall for some retail therapy. Home to at least 400 stores and restaurants, this is the ideal place to hunt for merchandise and sample savory Filipino cuisine.

Tourists will find big apparel brands like H&M and enjoy numerous entertainment options, including karaoke bars, cinemas, and bowling alleys.

For lovers of open spaces, the mall is surrounded by lush landscapes and green gardens that offer an excellent space to relax.

  • Business hours : Sunday to Thursday (10 am 0- 9 pm), Friday to Saturday (10 am – 10 pm).

Explore Spanish History At Fort San Pedro

History buffs curious about the city’s past can witness a reminder of the Spanish occupation era at Fort San Pedro. The stone structure was built in the 17th century and served as a military defense base.

Located on the pier of Cebu City, the fort has two sides overlooking the sea and spots three bastions mounted with fourteen cannons. Today, Fort San Pedro is a museum that aims to preserve the legacy of the Spanish in the Philippines.

Guests can inspect numerous medieval artifacts housed in the museum, such as paintings, documents, photographs, and sculptures. There is also a picnic site and walkways to explore the bastions of Fort San Pedro.

  • Admissions : $.53 per person

Fort San Pedro is the smallest and oldest fort in the Philippines, built in a triangular shape with two sides facing the sea and the third facing land.

Bask In The Tranquil Atmosphere Of Sirao Garden

Dubbed the “Little Amsterdam of Cebu,” Sirao Garden is the perfect playground for nature lovers looking to escape the bustle and hustle of the city. This flower farm in the highlands of Busay is home to rows of hyacinths, sunflowers, asters, and daisies, which transform the setting into a kaleidoscope of colors and fill the atmosphere with a refreshing aroma.

Sirao Garden is popular with visitors thanks to its delightful photo opportunities and features replicas of the famous Dutch windmills, hence the moniker “Little Amsterdam.”

  • Admissions : Start at $1.07 per person
  • Hours : 6 am – 7 pm daily

Tour The Oldest Church In The Philippines

Founded in 1565 by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the Basilica del Santo Nino is the oldest church in the country. It was initially constructed using hardwood, nipa, and mud and twice razed down by fire but restored.

Unbelievably, it remains standing today, attracting the Catholic faithful to worship in its regularly-held masses. Guests can admire gorgeous ancient paintings and stained-glass windows lining the church's hallways.

Several 17th-century relics and a library filled with old books in the Basilica transport vacationers to the medieval times in Cebu City.

  • Admissions : $1.07
  • Hours : Sun 4 am - 5 pm, Mon - Thu 5 am - 7 pm, Fri 4 am - 10 pm, Sat 5 am – 7 pm

Taking pictures is forbidden in the Basilica del Santo Nino, so travelers are advised to put aside their camera phones.

Tickle The Taste Buds With A Lenchon Food Trip

One of the best offerings waiting for visitors to Cebu City is its savory dishes, and guests can never go wrong with the trademark meat, Lenchon. Lenchon is a pork dish that takes a prominent space in Philippine cuisine, prepared by roasting a pig over a fire pit.

The animals are stuffed with tomato, lemongrass, vinegar, and a combination of herbs and spices that gradually cook over the charcoal to culminate in a richly-flavored and sumptuous dish.

While Lechon is prepared nationwide, nothing comes close to Cebus' Lechon, famous for its crispy skin and juicy meat. This is usually accompanied by puso – rice served in heart-shaped coconut fronds.

The best place to sample Lechon in Cebu is Carcar, a small municipality around two hours away from the city. However, there are enough downtown Lechon restaurants for those who like to remain within the city limits.

Take In The Breathtaking Views From Tops Lookout

Tops Lookout is a spectacular vantage point in the City of Cebu that spoils first-timers with 360-degree views of the sprawling Cebu township.

A worthy break from the chaos downtown, the spot sits on a mountain at the height of 600 meters overlooking the intricate city. It is surrounded by lush greenery in a setting that embodies the beauty of the Philippines. Aside from Cebu, guests can also catch glimpses of the Bohol, Mactan, and Mandaue Islands.

Head to Tops Lookout early in the morning or at dusk to catch the exquisite sunset and carry a camera to capture the beautiful sight.

Related: 10 Reasons To Book A Flight To The Philippines This Summer

Best Time To Visit Cebu City

Cebu has only two seasons, highlighted by warm to cool weather, making it a worthy destination all year round. But like many cities in the Philippines, the best time for tourists is between December and February.

This period features sunny days and cool evenings, creating the perfect conditions to explore the city. The warm weather is also ideal for a dip in its pristine beaches and indulging in water-based sports on the numerous islands in Cebu province, including Mactan, Camotes, and Malapascua.

December to January is also the busiest tourism season in Cebu, so book flights and accommodation well in advance to avoid overspending during the high season.

The best time to avoid the crowds is during the shoulder season in spring. Flight and hotel prices drop, making it a prime time for budget travelers. The weather is generally hot and humid, but a dip in the waters should be enough to cope with the discomfort.

Pack enough sunscreen, a hat, a swimsuit, and other necessities for a satisfying experience when heading to Cebu City for a spring holiday.

June to August sees the lowest visitor numbers in Cebu City. Those with a constrained budget can take advantage of the opportunity for a cheap vacation. However, this is also the monsoon season, and the city experiences heavy precipitation, limiting outdoor adventures.

Cebu City is prone to occasional typhoons during the monsoon months; hence holidaymakers should check the local weather forecasts before traveling and avoid the sea.

Best Ways To Get Around Cebu City

Navigating Cebu City is a relatively straightforward experience, especially with many English speakers around to point guests in the right direction. Several transport means are available to help travelers get around from point A to B.

A jeepney is the primary mode of transportation in Cebu and can be found throughout the city. These colorful minibuses are privately operated and run 24 hours a day with designated routes and stops where they can pick up or drop off passengers.

Jeepneys are a cheap option to get around and a great way to have a local public transport experience.

  • Fares : Range between $.15 to $1 for a one-way trip

Taxis are also available for travelers who appreciate the convenience of traveling privately and exploring the city at their own pace. These can be flagged down almost anywhere on the road but won’t stop when there’s a traffic officer.

While they are a tad costlier than jeepneys, taxis are generally affordable and use meters to compute the fare.

  • Taxi rates : $.72 base rate, plus $.24 for every kilometer

Habal-habal

Habal-habal is a local name for motorcycle taxis that stay parked on the side of the streets waiting for passengers. These will take tourists to different interest points and come in handy in small towns where the roads are narrow.

Riders offer passengers a helmet before the journey, and prices are often negotiated.

Tourists should agree on the final fare to the destination before boarding to avoid trumped-up fees later on.

Car rentals

Car rentals are an excellent alternative for visitors yearning to breach the city limits and discover the hidden gems in smaller towns and beachside villages. They also come with the convenience of a customized itinerary, allowing vacationers to go wherever and whenever they want to.

  • Rental rates: Start at $30 per day

Tourists should hire a private driver who can double up as a tour guide to take them to all their chosen points of interest.

Where To Stay In Cebu City

With its pristine sandy beaches, lush green jungles, and fabulous water sports opportunities, Cebu draws an average of 1,000,000 tourists annually . This means there is a high demand for accommodation, especially during the high season.

Luckily, the more than 160 islands surrounding the city offer visitors diverse areas and hotel options to cater to different budget preferences.

How To Spend The Perfect Day In Cebu City

Start the day with a wholesome breakfast at café Marco to stock up for the jam-packed itinerary. Head to the tiny 17th-century Fort San Pedro to witness Spanish heritage in the Philippines and check out its old artifacts and other memorabilia.

Walk to the Basilico del Sano Nino, the oldest church in the country, then proceed to the Magellan’s Cross, which has ties to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors on the island.

Later, stop at the Cebu Heritage Monument, then the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House, for more of the city’s history before catching a ride to the lively Colon Street for lunch at Cebu’s Original Lechon Belly.

After lunch, take it easy with a tour of the Cebu Taoist Temple and, later, a laid-back stroll through the serene walkways of Sirao Garden. The afternoon is an excellent time for tourists to reward themselves with retail therapy at the humongous Ayala Center Shopping Mall. Before darkness sets in, catch spectacular city views from Tops Lookout.

Finally, cap off the day’s itinerary with dinner at Blu Bar & Grill, accompanied by a cold drink before retiring to the hotel.
