5 day Costa Brava itinerary: the best things to do

Dali House

A road trip is the best way to explore Costa Brava and this blog post includes everything you need to plan your visit: a thoroughly planned itinerary, travel tips, restaurant and hotel recommendations, a map to take with you on your trip and finally a video that shows you the very best things to do.

Whether you are planning a family trip, romantic escape, or a solo adventure, Costa Brava is a dream summer destination.

Here’s your ultimate guide to five days in Costa Brava!

Costa Brava itinerary: Day 1

If you are a fan of Salvador Dali's work, there are three places in Costa Brava you can't miss: his museum in Figueres, his house in Portlligat and his wife's castle in Pubol. Tickets for all three places sell out fast so I recommend you buy them online before your trip.

Spend day 1 in Figueres . The town’s main claim to fame is that it was where the artist Salvador Dalí was born and is where his main museum in Spain is located. The museum building is a large red theatre. The outside is covered in yellow pieces of bread, with white eggs on the roof and golden statues. Dalí designed it himself and wanted the museum to be a surrealist journey through his bizarre world. The museum houses one of the best Dalí collections of art in the world. Right next to the Dalí Theatre Museum is the Dalí Jewels Collection which shows a collection of jewellery made by him.

Fuigueres

Where to eat: at Restaurante El Motel you can find the exquisite food and the most spectacular dessert trolley! It's pricey but worth it.

Figueres restaurant

Costa Brava itinerary: Day 2

Start your day at Cala Montjoi , the cove where the world-famous restaurant El Bulli is located. Note that the restaurant is not open anymore. Something else to take into account is that the road to the cove is closed from 10:30am to 4:30 pm.

During our trip we stayed in the coastal town of Roses . Not much to see here but the beach is really nice, there are many hotel resorts and the location is really good to travel around Costa Brava.

Where to eat : Ona is the coolest beach bar in Roses. Surf vibes surround you as soon as you walk in the hut. They serve burgers, sandwiches and healthy bowls. Ona is also a great choice for cocktails when the sun goes down.

Where to stay: Hotel Mediterraneo Park (Roses)

Costa Brava

Costa Brava itinerary: Day 3

Apart from dreamy coastal towns, in Costa Brava you can find quaint medieval towns with cobblestone streets, stone houses and bougainvillea hanging from balconies. Pals and Peratallada are two of those villages that must be on your itinerary. Once you get there all you have to do is wander around the streets and find the prettiest spots. There are also amazing shops here. No tacky souvenirs, it's all good quality craftsmanship.

Where to eat : Restaurante La Roca at Peratallada has the lovieliest patio to eat al fresco. Their 23€ menu includes a starter, main course and dessert which is a great deal!

Peratallada

Costa Brava itinerary: Day 4

Cadaques is one of the most beautiful places in Costa Brava. Once the location of artists like Joan Miro or Pablo Picasso, this white washed village recieves many visitors every summer for good reason. Cadaques is a unique seaside gem that you should not miss.

Tip: the mountain road that leads to Cadaques is not for those who get car sick. If you are going to be traveling around the area, I suggest you stay somewhere else and spend a day in Cadaques

Where to eat: if you are eating in Cadaques, be sure to book a table in advance. The town is packed with tourists during the summer and it will be difficult to get a table otherwise. We had lunch at Talla and loved it. They serve Mediterranean food with a modern twist. The food quality and cooking was exceptional. Another option is Compartir, one of the most famous restaurants in Cadaques.

Where to stay: Hotel Boutique Villa Gala

Cadaques

Cap de Creus natural park is paradise for nature lovers. Here you will find hiking trails, secluded coves and a lighthouse. You can reach the lighthouse by bus until 8pm when the road opens to the public. Since many people want to see the sunset there, it gets really busy and the road is very narrow and parking is limited. So you may consider using the bus service. You can find a restaurant with live music by the lighthouse. The experience is really cool but the food is overpriced.

Cap de Creus

Costa Brava itinerary: Day 5

Aiguablava beach -literally blue (blava) water (aigua) - is a must in Begur. It´s a small beach with crystalline waters. Its shallow waters and golden sand make it one of the most famous and beautiful beaches on the Costa Brava. Located on the Begur coastline it boasts spectacular views of the bay and the cape of Begur.

Tip:  this is a very small beach and due to the pandemic access to Aiguablava beach is limited. Get there as early as you can to avoid queuing.

Where to eat: Mar i Vent  Paradores restaurant's terrace overlooks the crystalline waters of the sea and the golden sand of the beach. The amazing views combined with the quality of Paradores make this place a must.

Where to stay: Parador d'Aiguablava  is a balcony over the Mediterranean Sea. If that wasn't appealing enough, this hotel also offers some of the nicest beaches, the best traditional cuisine and great views.

Costa Brava Overview

Fornells from the sea.

The Costa Brava is the name given to the wild coastline of the Catalonia – and in particular the province of Girona – in northeast Spain. It’s home to fragrant pine forests, rugged cliffs, picturesque medieval villages, Catalonian culture, castles, and dazzling emerald waters. Plus you have Barcelona and Girona within daytrip distance.

The Costa Brava region sits at the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains and its coastline stretches for 200km from Portbou in the north to Blanes in the south.

It was one of the first destinations in Spain to open up to mass tourism in the 50s and 60s and the ensuing building boom went largely unchecked. The larger resorts have plenty of high-rise hotels, although the landscape restricts sprawl to an extent.

As with many of Europe’s blockbuster mega-resorts, there has been a move away from bargain-basement party tourism over the past few decades. The light and the landscapes of the Costa Brava have also long attracted arty types (Salvador Dali is the region’s most famous son) and it’s an increasingly popular destination for foodies as well as those who enjoy culture and activities like golf and diving.

The beaches are golden and clean but mostly small pebbles or gritty sand. Choose your base carefully if you prefer soft sand. But the crowning glory of the Costa Brava is its endless small pretty coves known as calas . A car is essential if you want to explore the prettiest and most rugged parts of the coastline.

Many Costa Brava resorts primarily serve domestic tourism these days and so expect most accommodation to be mid-range 2-3 star traditional hotels, pensiones , apartments and guesthouses. These resorts can be particularly crowded at weekends.

Most larger resorts will have a handful of boutique hotels, but there hasn’t been the explosion of design hotels that you see on Mallorca – perhaps because self-catering is so popular here. There are many campsites and the hilly areas are home to many villas with excellent views, particularly around upmarket areas like Begur.

If you’re after all-inclusive accommodation and/or travelling by public transport then focus on the bigger resorts in the south like Lloret de Mar. The more international resorts tend to have a longer summer season.

Which Part of the Costa Brava to Stay In?

  • NORTH: Known as Alt Emporda and its cultural capital is inland at Figueres . Rugged headlands dense with coves interrupted by long sandy wetlands beaches.
  • CENTRAL : Known as Baix Emporda , the prettiest section of the coast with lots of little villages and upscale tourism.
  • SOUTH : Known as La Selva . Dominated by mass tourism and purpose-built resorts. This is where you’ll find the highest proportion of internationals, all-inclusives, and package tourism, but there are also resorts geared to local families.

So Boadella beach near Lloret de Mar.

GETTING AROUND

Airports : The main international airport serving the region is Girona-Costa Brava (GRO).

The Costa Brava is also accessible from Barcelona Airport (BCN), which is a one hour drive from the southern resorts and has a greater range of long-haul connections. Some also drive down from Perpignan airport in France which is well-served by budget airlines.

Reus Airport (REU, sometimes sold as Barcelona-Reus) is a two hour drive from the southern resorts and is popular with European budget airlines.

We recommend using Skyscanner to check for the cheapest flights.

Ferry : Barcelona is a major ferry and cruise port with connections to Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Italy, Morocco, and Algeria.

We recommend using Ferryhopper for route information and tickets.

Train and Bus : The train lines in the Costa Brava run inland through Girona and Figueres rather than along the coast. The bigger resorts in the south are well-served by buses. Renting a car is common.

You can check train and bus routes on Rome2Rio and book tickets through Omio .

Portbou is the first coastal town south of the French border. It’s the kind of place you pass through rather than go looking for – a port town with an impressively large rail terminal, and a shingle beach. This is the end of the rail line, and where those travelling to France will need to change train.

Nonetheless, it’s pretty enough for a quick stopover, although the beaches to the south are nicer – try  Platja de Garbet  and  Grifeu .

Hotels are functional – La Masia is right by the beach.

Transfer time : 1 hour 1 minutes from Girona airport.

Fishing boats on Cadaques beach.

With its whitewashed houses and tiled roofs, charming Cadaques is one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Spain. It’s set around a jagged bay with many coves. The beaches are pebbly but it has plenty of unspoiled scenery and hiking trails, particularly in the Cap de Creus nature park area to the north.

Cadaques is known for its Dali connection – the famous artist lived in the neighbouring village Port Lligat and today you can visit the Salvador Dali House Museum .

The town still attracts bohemian types. These days it caters to the upmarket crowd with lots of lovely boutiques and cafes. It has a year-round community including many expats and returners.

Stay at the Hotel Playa Sol , 4-star hotel just steps from the sea and has a pool and shady courtyard. Or the stylish Boutique Hotel Villa Gala which is further back in town but has chic blue-and-white rooms, a pool, and views of the town.

Transfer time : 1 hour 20 minutes from Girona airport.

Roses and the Gulf of Roses

Roses from the air.

Roses is the first big resort on the Costa Brava, and if you look at it from above you’ll see why. South of the town is a huge sandy beach – one of the best in the region – and to its north is a series of beautiful scalloped coves such as Canyelles Petites .

There are some historic relics such as the fortress but it’s primarily a large modern resort from the 60s boom. but has been rescued by Catalonia’s foodie renaissance. Some of Spain’s best hotels are located here. Popular with local and French tourists, the town is fairly nondescript but is one of the best areas for beaches. It’s not that popular with Brits who tend to head to resorts further south instead.

It was once home to the renowned El Bulli resturant until it shut in 2011.

Roses has a long promenade and marina. A tourist train which takes in the Cap de Creuses. Aquabrava Water Park. Two natural parks.

South of Roses is the strange Empuriabrava , an artificial lagoon with canals and a marina – now a luxury holiday village with private villas lining the poker-straight waterways.

The top luxury hotel in Roses is established 5-star Hotel Vistabella , located near the sandy beach at Platja de Canyelles Petites . Nearby you can also find beachfront apartments at Vista Roses Mar .

Furthr west on Platja Nova and Platja del Rastell are plenty of modern beachfront 4-star hotels such as Hotel Montecarlo Spa & Wellness .

Transfer time : 1 hour from Girona airport.

L’Escala

Beachside ruins at Empuries.

L’Escala is located at the southern end of the Gulf of Roses, though there are several smaller coves also accessible around the headland.

It has a small old town area, anchovy fishing heritage, and Greco-Roman ruins at Empuries . In the summer it hosts many small food festivals. It’s smaller and quieter than Roses, with good restaurants. A bit more upmarket and family-focused, with flat scenery.

There’s a cluster of accommodation around the small Montgo cala beach on the town’s southern side.

Hostal Spa Empuries brings simple boutique vibes to its beachside location, or for larger resort facilities look at RVHotels Nieves Mar .

Transfer time : 50 minutes from Girona airport.

L’Estartit

Beach at L'Estartit.

L’Estartit is a harbour town with a big 5km sandy beach. It’s a standout destination for diving and snorkelling thanks to the tiny Medes Islands Nature Park just 1 mile offshore.

It’s a small town with a low-key vibe, a marina, and a family-friendly beach. Other watersports such as kitesurfing are on offer too, as well as a wetlands area with a quiet beach.

There are plenty of boat trips to take, and you can also find walking trails in the Mongri Massif .

Most of the accommodation is up near the harbour rather than right by the beach. There are plenty of good-value family-run hotels – Hotel Panorama is our pick – as well as apartments and campsites.

Cap de Begur

Begur rooftops and citadel.

The most upmarket part of the Costa Brava is the area around handsome hilltown Begur . Lush and scenic, home to cork forests and swooping rock formations, this area is known as Baix Emporda . A popular second home destination for discerning , or chic weekend-breakers from the Barcelona. Not so well known with Brits, it can help to brush up on your Catalan. Unspoiled coastline with lots of small jewel-like coves with a few beach cafes and seafood restaurants.

There are red rocks and cliffs places for cliff-diving, snorkelling, and swimming. However the beaches are small and so can feel crowded in high summer, particularly as they attract daytrippers. Parking can be difficult in high season.

There’s a big sandy beach at Platja de Pals beach where you’ll also find several large luxury resorts including Hotel Clipper & Villas – The Costa Brava Family Hotel , which shares a large waterpart with nearby Camping Delfín Verde Resort . and La Costa Golf Beach Resort .

The Cami de Ronda is a beautiful hiking trail which runs from Begur down the coast to St. Feliu de Guixols and links many of the beach resorts listed below.

Most visitors to the area stay around Begur and drive to the sea (it’s 1.5km but hilly) for the day. Accommodation by the coves is relatively limited but there’s an increasing number of villas in the hills, as well as campsites in the wider area.

The atmospheric backstreets of medieval Begur make an appealing base for exploring the area if you have a car.

Overlooked by its citadel, the Castel de Begur , the town has retained its Catalan character and is welcoming and charming.  For the evening, there are plenty of good restaurants and wine bars spilling out onto the streets.

There are plenty of small boutique hotels and rentals in Begur including:

  • Alta House Suites
  • El Petit Convent
  • Es Cel de Begur Hotel
  • Hotel Aiguaclara
  • Hotel Hanoi
  • Hotel Spa Classic Begur

If you don’t mind being further inland there’s 5-star farmhouse luxury at Mas de Torrent Hotel & Spa .

Sa Riera beach.

Sa Riera is the first of a number of small and incredibly picturesque coves around the cape. It has a pebble beach and a cluster of restaurants in its old fisherman’s houses.

Hostal Ses Negres , offers laid-back coastal chic at 2-star prices right on the beach.

Aiguafreda is a tiny picturesque cove with a secluded feel and lots of small boats. The coastal trail runs right through the hamlet.

One of the most appealing places to stay in the area is the adults-only 4-star Hotel Cap Sa Sal with its soothing neutral interiors and immaculate coastal views. It has apartments available further around the coast at Cap Sa Sal Turquesa .

Transfer time : 55 minutes from Girona airport.

Sa Tuna beachfront.

Sa Tuna is a small bay short walk from Aiguafreda, a slightly larger cove with 80 metre pebble beach, clean waters, and more parking.

The tiny Hostal Sa Tuna only has 5 rooms but is right by the water and the accompanying restaurant is excellent. There are a few vacation rentals in the area if you’re quick (like Casa Malva ).

Fornells and Aiguablava

Small beach at Fornells.

Fornells is the name given to the are around an incredibly pretty bay with several rocky calas .

Surrounded by pines, the water here is particularly emerald. The rocks are tinged with red and topped with pines. You’ll find small boats for hire as well as diving and snorkelling opportunities. It does get busy with daytrippers.

On the northern side is a small and tranquil pebble Platja Fonda .

Aiguablava is one of the coves and is probably the prettiest small beach in the Costa Brava.

Stay at the 4-star Hotel Aigua Blava which has stunning views, stylish rooms, sports facilities, and a large pool and terrace area.

There are also many villas in the hills behind such as the beautiful Villa Mirtilo with 5 beds and saltwater infinity pool.

Tamariu beach.

The small resorts of Tamariu , Llafranc , and Calella de Palafrugell form a trio of idyllic, upmarket, and well-maintained beach resorts a short drive from inland Palafrugell town.

This is arguably the nicest part of the Costa Brava as you have excellent beaches and the Cap de Begur is a just short drive away.

Small and scenic, Tamariu is situated in a pine-shaded bay south of Fornells . It has fishing village origins and is a likeable small resort with a medium-sized sandy beach with sheltered waters, ideal for those who like a beautiful setting and simple pleasures.

It has a small playground and mini markets but no organised entertainment, and the beach does get busy in August.

There are a few low-key hotels such as Hotel Hostalillo but most of the accommodation is self-catered – check VRBO or Booking.com for options.

Llafranc.

Llafranc is a typical Mediterranean fishing village with terracotta tiles, whitewashed walls, turquoise waters, fragrant pines.

It’s a handsome place with cobbled streets and envelops several lovely beaches – it’s one of the most beautiful beach resorts in Spain.

Llafranc is slightly larger than Tamariu and has more amenities, including a small marina, and a wider choice of accommodation including several campsites.

Top hotels include:

  • Hotel Terramar (right on the beach)
  • Hotel Llafranch (right on the beach)
  • Casamar (right on the beach)
  • Hotel Mas Pastora (adults-only)
  • Hotel BlauMar Llafranch

Calella de Palafrugell

Calella de Palafrugell beachfront.

A short walk around Cami de Ronda walking trail takes you from Llafranc  to Calella de Palafrugell , is the largest of the three beach villages near Palafrugell and the most resort-like in feel.

But it hasn’t lost its fishing heritage and is popular with Catalans as well as varied international visitors. There are botanic gardens as well as a museum dedicated to the area’s cork industry.

Coastal explorers will be happy here, there are some small islands offshore and a series of stunning coves (such as Cala Eto ) the south well worth exploring. Kayaking, snorkelling, and diving are popular in the area. There are several small beaches of course-grained sand and the landscape is slightly hilly.

The hotels in Calella de Palafrugell are traditional and sometimes a bit dated, though often with great views. Good options include:

  • Hotel Mediterrani (right on the beach)
  • Hotel Sant Roc
  • Hotel Garbi
  • Azulik Boutique Apartments
  • Canadell Apartments

For a true slice of local life you can stay inland at Palafrugell, a laid-back working town with old backstreets just 10 minutes in the car from the coast where you’ll find a clutch of stylish places to stay such as Can Liret Hotel and  Le Rondini .

Transfer time : 45 minutes from Girona airport.

Waves on Palamos beach.

Palamos is a historic harbour town and beach resort with a wide tree-lined promenade and a big fishing fleet known for for its prawns.

The town has a long trading history which is evident in some of its grand buildings. It’s family friendly but with a summertime buzz and a character that the purpose-built resorts south of here lack. There’s lots to do in the wider area and no shortage of amenities.

Palamos has a large sandy beach but head north to find are several smaller quieter beaches. Cala de la Fosca is an undiscovered gem, beautiful and less visited beach overlooked by the ruins of a medieval castle. It’s perfect for picking up a kayak or SUP or chilling out at a beach bar.

Top hotels in Palamos include:

  • Hotel Trias (beachfront)
  • Hotel Vostra Llar
  • Hotel Casa Vincke
  • Hostal La Fosca (beachfront)

Transfer time : 40 minutes from Girona airport.

Sant Antoni de Calonge

Calonge beach from the air.

Palamos blends into the larger town of  Sant Antoni de Calonge is where the vibe changes from scenic fishing town to purpose-built resort with big flat beaches.

It’s a large modern resort graced with a wide beach divided up by several breakwaters which create distinctive semicircles of sand. The beach is Blue Flag-rated with shallow waters popular with local families.

The beach is flanked by a wide promenade and a long line of apartment blocks. There are plenty of watersports, volleyball, and beach bars on offer. But it’s more low-key and family-focused than neighbouring Platja d’Aro. There’s plenty to explore in the surrounding landscape including walking trails and beaches with distinctive rock formations.

To the south is a wooded rocky zone with sandy coves. Camping Internacional de Calonge is right behind Cala Gogo .

Hotel Rosamar is the standout hotel in town – a boutique 3-star right on the beach which also has a shady pool area.

Platja d’Aro

Platja d'Aro beach.

Platja d’Aro is a lively purpose-built resort with something for everyone. It has plenty of beach bars, good nightlife, and some of the best shopping in the area. It’s is a popular destination for young couples and groups of friends – a mix of Spanish and internationals.

The wide sandy beaches with lifeguards and playgrounds also appeal to young families. Other amenities include a tourist train, escape rooms, golf courses, boat trips, and the Aquadiver Water World water park.

There are many great-value resort hotels in Platja d’Aro. Pick of the bunch is Hotel Cap Roig , but it’s worth checking Booking.com for deals. You can find packages from the UK to Platja d’Aro with Jet2 .

Transfer time : 30 minutes from Girona airport.

S’Agaro and Sant Pol

S’Agaro is essentially the quieter and more upmarket southern end of Platja d’Aro . It’s associated with a glamorous clientele and is home to exclusive villas and gated communities developed in a style sympathetic to the surroundings. S’Agaro is divided from Platja d’Aro by several streams and a rocky patch of coast.

It’s next to the fantastic Blue Flag beach at Sant Pol where you’ll find distinctive colourful beach huts for showering.

The area’s 5-star hotel – Hostal de la Gavina – is the most famous luxury hotel in the Costa Brava. There are also a few resort hotels at Sant Pol:

  • S’Agaro Mar Hotel
  • Hotel Ilunion Caleta Park
  • Hotel Restaurant Sant Pol

Sant Feliu de Guixols

Sant Feliu de Guixols beachfront.

Sant Feliu de Guixols (sometimes known simply as Guixols ) is a lovely seaside town with a good mix of amenities but without the crowds of the bigger resorts. As with Palamos, it retains some historic character – particularly its art nouveau villas, Maritime Museum, and notable Benedictine monastery.

These days it has a large dose of marina buzz and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. It has a large and clean town beach, plus Sant Pol beach is accessible to the north and there are many coves in the area.

South of Guixols is the Massis de les Cadiretes nature reserve – one of the most beautiful parts of the coastline with winding mountain roads leading to many cala beaches such as Giveroleta , Salionc , Pola , and Senyor Ramon .

Top places to stay in Guixols include:

  • Elke Spa Hotel
  • Eden Roc Mediterranean Hotel & Spa

Transfer time : 35 minutes from Girona airport.

Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar beach.

Tossa de Mar is the most versatile resort in the Costa Brava. It’s a lively and family-friendly beach town with an atmospheric old quarter area – Vila Vella – within medieval walls which once attracted artistic types and today is packed with souvenir shops and bars.

The newer part of town is densely packed with apartment blocks.

Tossa is popular with both locals and northern Europeans looking for a beach break. Its two main beaches – Platja Gran  and Platja Mar Menua – are both Blue Flag and overlooked by the Muralles de Tossa, a 12th-century castle. The coastal scenery on either side is fantastic with a few lovely hikes.

Top places to stay in Tossa de Mar include:

  • Gran Hotel Reymar
  • Boutique Hotel Casa Granados
  • Giverola Resort
  • Diana Hotel
  • Golden Mar Menuda

Cala Llorell and Canyelles

Sandwiched between two of the Costa Brava’s busiest resorts are Cala Llorell and Canyelles , two almost untouched tranquil bays with just a handful of facilities, chiringuitos , and accommodation, perfect if you want to escape the crowds.

There are paid carparks and a diving schools, and villas tucked away in the hills behind, and a campsite at Canyelles.

Villa Cala Canyelles

Transfer time : 25 minutes from Girona airport.

Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar beach.

Lloret de Mar is he biggest and most popular beach resort on the Costa Brava. This is the Costa Brava’s main party resort with dawn-to-dusk entertainment in the summer. Buzzing promenade. Think foam parties and casinos. Waterworld.

There are five beaches here. Two main beaches have a city vibe. Main beach is Platja de Lloret . The biggest beach in the region. Quieter beach is Fanals . The sand here is more coarse-grained than Tossa de Mar.

South along the coast are the Botanic Garden and several beaches in wilder cove scenery at Sa Boadella , Santa Cristina , and Cala Treumal .

Along with Tossa de Mar , it’s the most international of the Costa Brava resorts. You’ll find plenty of all-inclusive resort hotels and international restaurants here, as well as a large concentration of Brits. It’s very youth-focused and is also popular with local visitors from around Spain.

  • Sant Pere del Bosc (5-star heritage luxury outside town)
  • Hotel Miramar
  • The 15th Boutique Hotel
  • Augusta Club & Spa (adults-only)
  • Hotel Rigal Park & Spa

Kids in tow? The Hotel Guitart Central Aquapark has 4 swimming pools.

Blanes beach.

Budget-friendly bucket-and-spade resort Blanes is the last big town on the Costa Brava.

It’s a large coastal town with an extensive 4km sandy  beach lined with high-rise apartments, big port and fishing fleet and lots of markets. The vibe is cheery and local with lots of large family-friendly resort hotels and holiday villages. Big campsites.

The big resort feel continues into the Costa Maresme , the next stretch of coast to the south. Sometimes these resorts are sold as Costa Brava holidays (mainly Santa Susanna, Malgrat de Mar, Pineda de Mar and Calella) but technically this is a different region.

There are plenty of beachfront high rise hotels such as the Beverly Park & Spa  plus well-located campsites like Camping La Masia .

The Costa Brava is a popular region in Spain for a family vacation, starting north of Barcelona and stretching up to the French border. The stunning coastline is the draw here and has inspired some of the world’s best artists, like Dali and Picasso. Children enjoy the kid-friendly museums devoted to these artists, paired with an e-bike ride to take in the beautiful countryside that features prominently in their famous paintings. Slow the pace by wandering through fishing villages or playing on the rocky shores. Plan to stay for at least four or five nights to savor the Costa Brava culture properly, and consider renting a kid-friendly farmhouse for an intimate, very local accommodation experience.

Costa Brava Travel Guide: What to Do and Where to Go

With an arresting scenery and sparkling Mediterranean coastline, the Spanish region of Costa Brava ticks all the boxes for a sun-soaked getaway. Tucked away in the northeastern corner of Catalonia, it stretches from the French border all the way to the ‘Costa Brava gateway’ of Blanes. Once in the shadows of the more touristy Costas of mainland Spain, in-the-know travellers have been taking holidays in Costa Brava since the sixties. With a treasure trove of fishing villages and lively seaside towns, Costa Brava, aka the ‘Wild Coast’, has so much to offer .

The warmer Mediterranean climate means that you can get good weather almost year-round – even March can see highs of 17°C! However, we’d say the best time to visit Costa Brava is either May-June or September – October because the weather is still warm, and you’ll avoid tourist season (and higher prices). However, we know school holidays dictate when a lot of families can go away – so although peak summer is also peak tourist season… you can enjoy the sunny weather in a villa that’s a little more secluded if the crowds bother you (win-win).

How to get there

Airlines such as Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI Airways all fly directly from the UK to Girona. It takes less than 90 minutes to drive from Barcelona to Costa Brava (Barcelona is just 57 miles south of Girona). So, a flight to Barcelona with EasyJet, Jet2, Ryanair or British Airways is also an option. From Barcelona city centre, you’ll find good rail and bus links to the Costa Brava region, as well as private transfers and car hire options.

Why visit Costa Brava?

Blanes town costa brava

The view of Blanes from St John’s Castle

From the hidden inlets of Calella de Palafrugell to the relaxing coves of Blanes, you’re never far away from beautiful golden sands. If lying horizontally isn’t your thing, the coastal paths that traverse the Costa Brava region offer spectacular views. Get the full low-down on our blog, The Best Beaches in Costa Brava .

The landscape

Costa Brava’s coastal landscape is simply stunning. From sweeping bays and rugged, steep cliffs, to protected marshes and sand dunes – you’ll be in awe of all of the views. Head inland and you’ll be treated to a visual feast of quaint white-washed villages strewn in dashing bougainvillea. And don’t forget those verdant foothills of the Pyrenees – it’s easy to see why artist Salvador Dali was so inspired!

It’s family-friendly

Families are not forgotten in Costa Brava. The city of Girona is a fantastic place to enjoy lively markets and street performers, while many of the pristine Blue Flag beaches here are perfect for children . You’ll find many resorts also carry the Family Tourist Destination seal, awarded by the Catalan tourist board.

Costa Brava

History and Culture

The Costa Brava is home to a layered history, dating as far back as the 1 st Century BC. Today, you’ll find many examples of Roman, Medieval and Arab influences in the way of Gothic buildings, hilltop castles, and ancient monuments. Once a frontier between the Arab and Christian worlds, the walled city of Girona is worth visiting for historic treasures and panoramic views.

The Catalans know how to party, and the best Costa Brava holidays, in our opinion, are those that coincide with one of Catalonia’s outstanding festivals. Various carnivals take place in February, and the Fireworks Contest , held in Blanes in July, is spectacular. The Porta Ferrada Music Festival  and Girona Flower Festival also pull in the crowds.

Hidden Gems

Begur Costa Brava

The colourful buildings of Begur old town

The Mas Molla Winery

The Costa Brava wineries are some of the most highly acclaimed in Spain. A visit to the family-run Mas Molla Winery offers a glimpse at some of the oldest farming methods in the region.

Gala Dali’s castle

Visiting the Dali Theatre Museum in Girona and the Salvador Dali house in Port Lligat, Cadaqués, are just a couple of the top things to do in Costa Brava. However, the biggest fans will also visit the ‘ Gala Dali Castle ’, the former home – and now mausoleum – of the legendary painter’s wife.

Do as the Barcelonians do and visit the charming town of Begur. Home to a colourful historic quarter and a 15th-century hilltop castle, it’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in Costa Brava.

Where to visit in Costa Brava

Cami de Ronda hiking Costa Brava

One of the many parts of the Cami de Ronda trail along the coast of Costa Brava

Explore the National Parks

The Costa Brava National Parks are a nature lover’s paradise and one of the most popular, Cap de Creus National Park , is known for its dramatic cliffs and panoramic sea views. Find a quiet spot to enjoy the vistas and visit the lighthouse, home to its own restaurant and bar.

Hit the water

Historic catamaran trips, excellent water sports facilities and impeccably clear bays offer plenty of opportunities to hit the open water. Check out our suggested boat trips on our Things to do in the Costa Brava round-up.

The Costa Brava plays home to some of the best golf courses in Europe. The golf clubs here fringe the Mediterranean coastline and the cloud-piercing Pyrenees. As a result, they offer up some of the most stunning locations to perfect your putt. Happily, we have a huge selection of Costa Brava homes near golf courses that are certain to delight those who just can’t keep their clubs at home!

Hike the Cami de Ronda

One of the region’s most well-known hiking trails is the Cami de Ronda. It runs almost the entire length of Costa Brava, from Blanes up to Portbou on the French border.  Although it’ll put your fitness to the test… the views are out of this world.

From quaint, rustic villas in the countryside to 14th Century Catalan mansions and architectural masterpieces with infinity pools… our collection of properties in Costa Brava, Spain, cater to every type of family, traveller, and taste. Now you’ve done a little more research on the area, you can start planning your next unforgettable family trip with Oliver’s Travels ! The ultimate guide to Costa Brava travel

Experience the beauty and culture of the region with this in-depth Costa Brava travel guide.

costa brava family trip

A view of Llafranc . Photo by Manuel Torres Garcia The Costa Brava , with its mix of stunning beaches, historic towns, and rich culture, is a premier travel destination in Catalonia. This Costa Brava travel guide will help you navigate everything you need to know for an unforgettable trip, from planning and transportation to must-see attractions and local dining. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller, the Costa Brava promises an enriching experience that caters to all tastes and interests.

Planning your trip

Planning a trip to the Costa Brava involves deciding when to visit, understanding the travel requirements, and familiarizing yourself with local languages.

When to visit

The Costa Brava is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences. For beach lovers, the summer months of June to August offer warm weather and lively seaside life, though this is also peak tourist season with higher prices and larger crowds.

For a quieter experience with mild weather, the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal. These months offer pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists, and lower accommodation

Travel documents and currency

For travellers from the European Union, the Schengen Area, or those holding a Schengen visa, entry to Spain is straightforward. Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay. Non-EU visitors should check visa requirements well in advance.

The currency in the Costa Brava is the Euro (€). ATMs are widely available, and credit cards are commonly accepted. It’s advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments or markets.

Catalan and Spanish are the official languages of the Costa Brava. While many locals speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic phrases in Catalan or Spanish can enhance your travel experience and help you connect with the local culture.

Transportation

Getting to and around the Costa Brava is convenient with multiple options available.

Getting there

The Costa Brava is well-connected by various modes of transportation, making it accessible from both within Spain and internationally.

Air: The nearest major airport is Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO), about 12 kilometers south of Girona, serving numerous European destinations with budget airlines like Ryanair. Alternatively, Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) is approximately 90 minutes away by car and offers a wider range of international flights.

Train: The high-speed AVE service connects major Spanish cities like Madrid and Barcelona to Girona. From Girona, regional trains and buses can take you to various towns and cities along the Costa Brava. Travel by train is a convenient and scenic way to reach the region, especially from Barcelona.

Car: Driving to the Costa Brava provides the most flexibility, allowing you to explore the region at your own pace. The AP-7 motorway runs parallel to the coast, connecting the area with France to the north and Barcelona to the south. Car rental services are available at airports and major cities.

Getting around

Once you’re in the Costa Brava, getting around is relatively easy with several transportation options available.

Public Transport: The Costa Brava has a reliable network of buses connecting main towns and tourist spots. Sarfa and Moventis are the primary bus operators, offering frequent services between popular destinations like Lloret de Mar , Tossa de Mar , and Roses .

Car Hire: Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring the Costa Brava, especially if you plan to visit more remote beaches, natural parks, or historic villages. The region’s roads are well-maintained, and driving allows you to experience the scenic coastal routes and picturesque countryside at your leisure.

Top 13 family-friendly things to do in Costa Brava

Costa Brava in Spain is well known for being one the first package holiday destinations. Now, 60 years later, this region is making a huge comeback. Having recently spent a week there with the kids, I can see why.

National Geographic Traveler magazine included the Costa Brava in its list of the world’s twenty best tourist destinations for 2012. The secret is officially out.

The Costa Brava is the coastal region in Catalonia north of Barcelona and stretches right up to the border with France where the dramatic Pyrenees mountains meet the Mediterranean Sea. Costa Brava itself actually means ‘rugged coast’ and when you visit you won’t be surprised to see the dramatic cliffs, coastal walks and numerous coves dotted along the coastline.

So what is it about the Costa Brava that has made it such a popular place for families to visit? Well having experienced it for ourselves we have picked out our top twelve favourite things for families to do.

1. Visit to ‘Mar i Murta’ Botanical Gardens in Blanes

Website – http://www.marimurtra.cat/en/

Cost – €7 per person (Children under 4 are free)

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - top things to do for kids in Spain - The beach in Blanes

Blanes is known for being the village which officially marks the start of the ‘Costa Brava’. It is also the first town on the Costa Brava to obtain the prestigious ‘Family Tourism Destination Certificate’ so it was an obvious place to start our Costa Brava adventure.

One of the most popular places to visit in Blanes is the Jardí Botànic Marimurtra Botanical Gardens. These gardens are renowned within Europe and are located a short walk beyond the end of the Balnes promenade. The walk alone is worth it for the stunning vista back down over Platja de Blanes beach. There’s even a tourist train from the centre of Blanes (Placa de Catalunya) to the gardens every 20 minutes during high season. It’s worth noting that there’s limited space for parking outside the gardens.

Our guide around the gardens was a lovely local lady called ‘Neus’ which actually means snow in Catalan. She was proud to tell us that the Botanical Gardens were home to over 3000 exotic species. The gardens themselves are split into three zones, subtropical, temperate and Mediterranean and were setup over 80 years ago by German Carl Faust, who was passionate about constructing a centre of botanical scientific investigation.

Apart from enjoying the array of plants, you’ll be distracted by the stunning views as the gardens are situated in a breathtaking coastal setting. Allow yourself extra time to sit on one of the perfectly situated benches and take in the vista. If you forget to bring your own drinks and snacks, there’s a lovely cafe on site.

2. Nordic Walking in Lloret del Mar

Website – http://www.nordicwalkingestrajo.com/

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - top things to do for kids in Spain - A family fun morning Nordic Walking in Lloret del Mar - one of our favourite activities in Costa Brava

Let me first of all say that Nordic Walking is not just walking with poles which I’ll be honest I was guilty of thinking prior to this activity. When you hold the poles correctly, you get a great upper body workout and it also makes walking on uneven terrain much easier. This is a sport that originated in Finland in 1997 by Marko Kantaneva and has since become a worldwide phenomenon. The very lovely Lourdes from Nordic Walking Estrajo gave us a quick lesson on the promenade after fitting us with our walking poles.

Our morning spent nordic walking around Lloret de Mar was one of our favourite family activities we enjoyed during our week in the Costa Brava. It was a wonderful way to appreciate the rugged landscape.

There were numerous water and photo stops along the way in an attempt to capture the breathtaking scenery. I found it a serene way to enjoy the landscape and the fact that I was getting a great workout while spending time with the kids was a bonus. Nordic poles are top of our list of things to get since we returned to Ireland, kids included!

3. Boat Trip to Medes Islands

Website – https://www.nautilus.es/en/

Cost   –  Adult Ticket – €21 & Children (u12) – €14

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - top things to do for kids in Spain - A family guided tour of the Medes Islands with Nautilus

The Medes Islands, located just a mile off L’Estartit beach, are an archipelago made up of seven islands and have been a protected marine flora and fauna reserve for nearly 30 years. The necessary protection of this reserve over this time has enabled the marine environment to recover dramatically.

One of the best ways to enjoy the Montgrí coas is by snorkelling, which has strict regulations to preserve this natural marine park. The second best way is on board the Nautilus boats which have large submerged windows, allowing those on board the opportunity to view the beauty of the vibrant seabed from a unique viewpoint.

Lasting from 90 minutes to 3 hours, you have a choice of three interesting routes with Nautilus around the Medes Islands. Certain routes even include the opportunity to jump off the boat and enjoy a cooling swim in the Mediterranean, They’re open all year and tickets can be booked online or from an official ticket kiosk near the beach.

We all loved our boat trip and the opportunity to get so close to the famous natural arch of Rosa Foradada and the Medes Islands themselves. The kids particularly enjoyed seeing the seabed from the glass bottomed boat and trying to identify the different species of fish and coral.

4. Via Ferrata in Sant Feliu de Guixlos

Website – https://www.parcaventurasantfeliu.com/

Cost – From €20 per person for equipment hire and guide (when booking three of more people)

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family guided tour of Via Ferrata Cala Del Moli Sant Feliu

For those of you who haven’t heard of a Via Ferrata (me included), it’s a protected climbing route who’s concept dates back to the nineteenth century, but they are often associated with the First World War, when several were built in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy to aid the movement of troops.

Located in the coastal town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the Sant Feliu de Guixols via ferrata is the only one in Europe at the edge of the sea.  Making your way on the edge of a mountain is surely one of the most exhilarating way to discover Costa Brava. This makes it extra dramatic as you’re climbing with the Mediterranean sea crashing below you. It’s free to do but it’s essential that you have the correct equipment and have experience. The route is divided into two stages, easy and medium. of easy and medium difficulty.

Halfway around, the users who do not want to complete the second, more demanding section can return to the starting point by climbing another road with security cables. There are nearly 500 meters of ascent and descent, between cliffs of living rock and an average height of about 10 meters above the waves. We met our tour guide and Via Ferrata Sant Feliu de Guixols course creator Albert who reassured us that this was a safe activity for us and that the kids were the perfect height.

After being fitted with the necessary safety harness equipment, Albert then took James and the children on the experience of a lifetime. I wasn’t able to take part as I didn’t have the correct footwear, mind you I’m not sure I would be brave enough to have taken part anyway.

Their trail took over one hour to complete (the first family friendly section) and when they came back they were all buzzing with adrenalin. It’s certainly not for the faint hearted and I can see why you have to be at least 10 years old to be able to manage the trail.

There are more difficult levels available but you must only complete those levels when you are experienced and have the suitable safety equipment as it can be very dangerous.

This is definitely not an activity for the faint-hearted or anyone afraid of heights but is an incredible experience for any thrillseeker.

5. A family golf lesson at Lloret Pitch & Putt

Website –  http://www.pitchandputtlloret.com/en/

thing-to-Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family golf lesson at Golf Lloret in Lloret del Mar

When visiting the popular tourist destination of Lloret de Mar, you’d be tempted to spend all your time near the Mediterranean beaches but why not try a different kind of family activity? Why not have a golf lesson at Golf Lloret Pitch & Putt?

We spent a fun-filled few hours having a private family lesson with Jordi who is a semi-professional golfer with the patience of a saint. We first spent time ‘perfecting’ our technique at the driving range before hitting the proper course. Although none of us are golfers, we loved the opportunity to play together in the Catalonia sunshine and get some exercise while we were at it.

After our lesson and play we headed to the 19th hole for tea and cakes and a well earned sit down in the shade after our fun time at Golf Papulus.

6. A Family Visit to a Rural Farmhouse and Winery

Website – Mas Mollas

Cost – €6 per person (taste three wines)

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family visit to a rural farmhouse and winery - the house

Mas Mollas is located in the Conca del Tinar de Calonge valley. We were welcomed to the the rural farmhouse by Neus, one of the first generation of women in the Molla family (since 1338) to run the winery. As Neus showed us around, she proudly told me how her father  retained a traditional family farming method even when he was under pressure to industrialise Mas Mollas as so many other farmers in the area had already moved over to a more ‘efficient’ method of growing and harvesting their grapes.

Now, many of those farmers are wishing they had stayed true to the traditional methods of wine production like Mas Mollas had. They now sell their year round wine to their loyal client base of local restaurants, hotels and shops.

They not only produce incredible wine but they also use the orchards surrounding the farmhouse to grow and sell fruit in the local markets during the summer.

James and I had the opportunity to taste three different wines, all very different but equally delicious.

A family visit to a winery might not seem like a very family friendly thing to do but actually you’d be surprised how much our three kids enjoyed it. They loved the guided tour (apart from the strong grape smell). They were fascinated with the chemistry behind the process but more than anything they were blown away by our tour guide’s passion for what her family do.

7. Segways in Val d’en Bas

Website –  http://www.segwaygarrotxa.cat/?lang=en

Cost – 1 hour tour around €30 per person

thing-to-Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - Segways family tour in Vall d'en Bas - unique way to explore the countryside

This was probably one of our favourite things that we did on our Costa Brava trip.  Our tour started at the centre for culture and nature in Can Trona in La Vall d’en Bas, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, about an hour from Girona. Incidentally, the centre itself is well worth a visit.

Eduard, our guide, who’s English was thankfully much better than our Catalan, started by teaching us how to ride a Segway and gave us the all important safety information. As with most things the kids picked up how to ride the Segways really quickly and were soon running rings around us adults. After a little pootle around the car park, confidence gained we headed off into the countryside. When I say countryside I really mean it! After a few kilometres on quiet local roads we headed off-road, onto grass, over bridges and up some fairly steep hills.

All along the way Eduard made constantly checked up that were all doing ok as well as explaining to us what we were seeing.

Segways are a brilliant way of seeing the countryside, you can see much more than walking will allow and it will let you go to places you might struggle to reach by bike – and it’s a lot less tiring than both! It also amazed me how quickly I got used to the initially alien controls, with starting, stopping and turning soon becoming instinctive.

I’m not usually the most adventurous of people and would ordinarily not have thought about doing this, however I’m so glad we did do it as it was very much a highlight of our stay.

8. Visit a Dairy Farm in La VALL D’EN BAS

Website –  http://www.maslacoromina.cat/

Cost – €8 adults €5 children (u12)

thing-to-Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family visit to a Dairy Farm - taking a break from all the fun on the farm

Nestled in the rural area of La VALL D’EN BAS is the charming organic dairy farm, Mas La Coromina. This 4th generation family run farm has more than 400 cows and calves which are milked three times a day which you can see if you time your tour well – the first milking is at 4 am mind you, so definitely not an option!

When we visited we were able to meet the calves and the kids had great fun feeding the cows with fresh grass as well as seeing bunnies and chickens. Our guide, Isabel, who is a member of the family and speaks great English, explained to us how the fertile soil in the area means that the family are able to be completely self-sufficient.

There is a well stocked, deli-style shop on site selling produce from the farm and other local delicacies. You can book a guided visit of the farm which is geared perfectly towards families and finishes with a taste of yogurts and cheese made with their milk.

9. Family Guided Coastal Walks

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - top things to do for kids in Spain - A family walk along the coastal paths in Costa Brava - Platja d'Aro coastal walk - hidden coves

One of our favourite ways to enjoy any destination is just walking around, wandering, exploring the area. You can get a real sense of where you are, the local people, the local food and the culture just by walking around and taking in the area.

One of my lasting memories of Catalonia is rambling along the coastal trail, mesmerised by the stunning landscape. Costa Brava Tourism have done a fantastic job making sure that visitors and locals can enjoy this unique and dramatic asset. The famous coastal hike GR-92 (Grand Randonee) route which crosses Catalonia and Spain along the Mediterranean coast is clearly marked with its distinctive red and white stripe painted onto the cliffside. This trail is 583km long so you’ll get just a taste for the magnificence of this route when walking along the coastal path (‘camins de Ronda’) in Costa Brava.

The pathways owe their name in Catalan to the ‘rondes’ or guards who traditionally patrolled the area, following the line of the coast as they kept an eye out for smugglers.

Why not booked a guided walking tour so that you can find more about the rich history of the area. We met with Roser from Platja d’Aro Tourist Board who gave us a fascinating guided tour as we walked along the coastal area from SANT ANTONI DE CALONGE to Platja d’Aro. As we meandered alongside dramatic cliff faces, sandy beaches and hidden coves, I feel that she gave us a real insight into true Catalan culture.

10. Roses Express

Website – https://www.trenrosesexpres.com/

Cost – Prices start at €34 for 2 adults and 2 children (u12)

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family trip on the Roses Express to see the Cap de Creus nature park - ticket office

Spending a couple of hours on a train doesn’t seem like the usual way to sightsee and avoid the midday Spanish sun but this is no ordinary train. The Roses Express is a ‘road train’ which takes you up high into the Cap de Creus nature park. You have a choice of different routes, to Puig Rom, Falconera, Puig Alt or Jóncols depending on how long you have and what you’re interested in seeing.

Our two hour trip took us through Roses and out onto the dusty tracks that cars just couldn’t negotiate. It’s such a unique way to view the hills and the peninsula, we loved it although it was quite bumpy and breezy. We appreciated the PA system which explained what we were seeing in various languages as well as English including the oft-repeated jingle “Roses Express – toot toot” which we are still singing now!

At the top, we stopped for a break where the driver served a little sangria and homemade biscuits while we all took photos of the Bay of Roses. Remember to bring a light jumper for the top as it can be a few degrees cooler at the summit.

You can prebook your tickets online or on the promenade in Roses. It’s worth noting that photos will be taken on board the train at one of the stops which you can choose to buy at the end if you wish but you don’t have to.

11. Visit a Fishing Auction in Roses

Website –  Guided Fishing Auction in Roses

Cost – €6 adults, €3.50 for children (u17)

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family visit to the fish auction in Roses

If you’d told me beforehand that visiting the fish auction in Roses would be one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Brava I would not have believed you. However, it turned out it was, with the kids putting it in their top 5 things we did! A major part of Saucepan Kids ethos is finding out where our food comes from so this trip was perfect, really showing us first hand how the fish we buy from shops gets there.

We met Roser, our guide, in the port and started off by watching the fishing boats returning from their day’s work (at 5pm) to offload their catches. From the quayside the crates of fish are transported the short distance to the auction on trollies.

There is a viewing gallery overlooking the auction floor where we could see everything that was going on and Roser could explain how the selling works. The same boxes of fish we’d just seen being taken off the boats arrive on a conveyor belt and each box is sold in turn. Contrary to other auctions we’ve seen, here the price starts high and automatically drops until one of the buyers (small shop owners, large supermarket buyers and restauranteurs from many miles around) press their electronic ‘buy’ button. Everything happens very quickly and the kids loved trying to guess was price the fish would sell for.

We finished off the tour in Roser’s favourite fish shop where we were introduced to some live lobsters. The Roses tourist office run regular tours of the auction and we’d highly recommend you take one – it’s a fascinating, alternative thing to do with the kids.

12. Take a Family Yoga Class in San Antonio De Calonge

Facebook – Món d’Harmonia

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family yoga class

Another first ticked off for us. This was James, Anna and Fraser’s first ever yoga session and Ellen and I, regular yoga goers, have never had a class in a vineyard. You don’t have to have the class in a vineyard, David from Món d’Harmonia has a studio, but in the beautiful scenery and fantastic weather it was an amazing experience.

This is not your run-of-the-mill holiday experience and not probably at the top of anyone’s list but actually it should be. Holidays are about getting away from our day-to-day lives and relaxing so a yoga session is just the ticket. Even James, who by his own admission would be rather self-conscious in these situations, relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed himself, even to the point of now doing some yoga at home.

David was an excellent teacher, he was calming and put us at our ease, managing to contort James into various poses he would not have thought possible.

So, think differently and book a family yoga session on your trip to Costa Brava – your well-being will be grateful.

13. A Family Cooking Class in Girona

Website – http://localmarket.cat/

Family Friendly things to do in Costa Brava with Saucepan Kids - Catalonia - Spain - A family cooking class in Girona preparing

Regular readers of Saucepan Kids know that we love travelling and learning about food, so what better than to combine the two and learn how to make authentic Catalan tapas from the experts.

Irene and Mariona, joint owners of The Local Market, run cooking classes in their seriously cool building right in the middle of beautiful Girona. With their help, masterful tuition and excellent English, the children cooked up a storm producing a range of dishes including a three layered tortilla cake, cod cannelloni and creme catalan (which needed a blow-torch much to the kids’ delight).

At the end of the evening we all tucked into the fine spread with a nice glass of local wine (water for the kids of course!).

If you enjoy cooking or want to get the kids learning new skills, you should definitely book yourselves into one of their classes when you are in Girona.

Best time of year to visit

We visited Costa Brava in April and we felt that it was the perfect time of year to enjoy the region. The benevolent climate ensured that we benefited from warm and sunny days without the fierce heat of the summer months. From talking with locals, September and October are also popular times to visit too.

Where did you stay in Costa Brava?

Hi Cynthia,

Thank you for your comment.

We stayed in various locations during our stay in Costa Brava. Where are you looking at visiting and I’ll see if I can recommend somewhere nearby.

Kind regards Debbie

Hi Debbie ( and Cynthia),

I am planning a trip to Barcelona and Costa Brava as well. We are a family of four, kids ages 8 and 13. Once we leave Barcelona and all the city crazy, we want to chill and relax on the beach, and have some downtime for 2-3 days. I’ve been to Cadeques and have friends who love Carcassonne. Any other suggestions of the ideal town to stay in other than the above? Or, would either of those be your favorites as well? We will then head to France.

Thanks! Meredith

Hi Meredith,

When are you heading to Costa Brava?

As you’re heading to France afterwards, why not head north along the coast towards Girona. I would recommend considering Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar as lovely seaside locations to spend a few quieter days. Platja d’Aro is a gorgeous (but quiet) town and if you’re looking for something more lively, check our Palamos.

We’re heading back again ourselves this summer as we loved it so much and we’re going to base ourselves in Roses which is not far from the picturesque village of Cadeques that you mentioned.

Wherever you go, definitely head into Girona for a few hours. It’s a beautiful city and much smaller than Barcelona.

Any further questions, let me know and have a fab time.

Hey Debbie. This is a great post. I am planning to travel to Costa Brava with my 2 kids (8 and 11) in early July for 3 days and would love to stay in a farmhouse or other rural lodging with a pool. We would likely spend time in Girona, take a cooking class, go biking, go to the beach. I am trying to figure out which town would be best as a homebase. Thanks, Evan

Thank you for your email and your lovely feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed reading our blog post. I’m excited to hear that you are looking at taking your two kids to Costa Brava in July. You will all love it.

Girona is a truly amazing city and the perfect base for a 3 day stay. Their website https://www.girona-tourist-guide.com/ will tell you all you need to know about the city.

If you are looking for more rural lodging with a pool, would you consider heading to the coast? The towns of Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Blanes are all wonderful base locations. Alternatively, I would also highly recommend heading north of Girona to the towns of Roses and L’Estartit. If you don’t have a hire car, I would recommend perhaps basing your decision on the easiest train/bus links.

In terms of accommodation, check out the camping association website – https://www.campingsingirona.com/ They have a wealth of knowledge in terms of campsites and lodgings.

I hope you have a wonderful time with your family Evan. If you have any other questions, let me know and please let us know how you get on.

This is an extraordinary guide for things to do in Blanes. I found it quite interesting and would even add some hiking or mountain biking in the area…Totally recomended!

Thanks Javier, I’m glad you found our guide useful.

It’s all in the name. Costa Brava’s major drawcard is its coastline as reflected in its name which literally means ‘rugged coast’ or ‘rough coast’, and rightly so.

Costa Brava has some of the bluest and clearest water in the world and the largest stretches of sand in Spain. Even artists like Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso holidayed on the scenic Costa Brava coastline.

Don’t miss:  S’Agaró. Take the coast walk for incredible views like this.

6. Costa Brava has some of the best food in Spain

costa brava family trip

Home to some of the world’s best chefs, the Costa Brava has some of the best food in Europe and often at a fraction of the cost you’d pay elsewhere in Europe.

From beachside cafés to Michelin-starred restaurants, Costa Brava caters to all budgets. Pun intended!

Its cuisine is influenced both by its coastal location and proximity to the Girona Pyrenees, which means seafood and meats are on the menu.

What to eat: The Costa Brava food scene revolves around rice, suquet, and traditional seafood dishes. Don’t miss pan Catalan, similar to Italy’s Bruschetta but with smashed tomatoes. Sounds simple but it’s all about the tomatoes here.

Costa Brava’s beauty extends inland and includes mountains! Yup, Costa Brava really does have it all.

Take a trip to the foothills of the Pyrenees and either go on a hike or hire an electric bike to help you explore even more of the stunning landscape. From walking amongst the beech forest at Fageda d’en to the staring up at towering peaks reaching 3,000 metres high before rolling into the quiet valleys of Cerdanya or Camprodon, the list of things to see here is limitless.

If you’re visiting in the cooler months, head to top ski resorts including Vallter 2000, Vall de Núria, La Molina and Masella.

Also to be explored is the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone, an area brimming with just under 40 volcanoes draped in greenery. While you’re here, pay a visit to Santa Pau.

Spend a lazy afternoon wandering around any one of the four beautifully landscaped gardens dotted along the Costa Brava coast.

Cap Roig Gardens is home to a mix of local plant species from the Mediterranean region alongside trees and plants from the other continents. During July and August and Costa Brava Jazz Festival is held here.

Located in Blanes, Marimurtra Botanical Garden is set on the cliffs of Sant Joan mount. Built in 1921 by the German scientist, Karl Faust, the gardens became one of the most important biological stations in the Mediterranean.

Also in Blanes is Pinya de Rosa Botanical Garden , where you’ll find tropical plants that have adapted to the Mediterranean climate such as as cacti, opuntias and aloes.

Don’t miss: Santa Clotilde Gardens ( Jardines de Santa Clotilde ). Located in Lloret de Mar on top of a cliff with impressive views, this botanical garden features several marble sculptures, a mermaid staircase and the only staircase in Europe that is entirely covered in ivy. This place is stunning!

14. Costa Brava is family-friendly

Costa Brava is a very family friendly destination which makes it a great choice for your next holiday destination.

If mum and dad want time to relax, you can pop your little ones into any of the Kids’ Club’s which usually run through the months of July and August. These clubs provide an enclosed outdoor facility where qualified adults organise fun seaside activities for children of all ages. You’ll find Kid’s Clubs in places including Blanes, and Platja Gran in L’Estartit.

Costa Brava doesn’t just have one, but several water parks that cater to the whole family.  Located near the beach and near the resorts are Aquabrava in Roses and Aquadiver , in Platja d’Aro

Don’t miss: Water World in Lloret de Mar. This is the best waterpark on the Spanish east coast and about the biggest in Europe! It’s got everything from water slides, to wave pools, to hot tubs. Don’t miss the 40-metre high slide! Click her for more details about Water World .

15. Costa Brava has stunning hotels

Where to stay in Costa Brava: Premier Gran Hotel Reymar

16. The Sunrises in Costa Brava are gorgeous

costa brava travel guide - Tossa de Mar Sunrise

What could be better than starting off your day with a pink sky like this? You might not be a morning person, but I recommend dedicating at least one morning to getting up early and enjoying views like this.

17. Sunsets in Costa Brava are stunning

costa brava travel guide - Tossa de Mar sunset castle

Watching the sunset is equally captivating. Since the sun sets to the west and therefore inland, aim to watch it from a high viewpoint such as Sa Palomera in Blanes.

18. Costa Brava is easy to get to

Now more than ever, Costa Brava is super easy to get to. Regular flights from London take no longer than 2 hours to reach Girona Costa Brava Airport.

If you’re in Barcelona it will take you less than an hour and even less from to the French border.

Getting to Costa Brava by plane: Girona airport is located at the heart of the Costa Brava, making it really easy to reach beach resorts. From the airport, Girona is 17 km, Lloret de Mar is 31 km and Tossa de Mar is 42 km.

If you land in Barcelona, you’ll be 93 km from Lloret de Mar, 104 km from Tossa de Mar, and 117 km from Girona.

Getting to Costa Brava by car: For more freedom, I recommend renting a car here to get around the Costa Brava. Take the Autovia del Mediterraneo (A-7) highway which connects resort towns like Lloret de Mar or Tossa de Mar.  If you decide on renting a car, do this before you travel to avoid inflated airport prices. Compare the best car rental prices here.

19. The time is now!

Getting to Costa Brava is cheap! Even half-way into the summer season, I can still find return tickets to Girona for £69 (72USD) from London so there’s really no excuse not to go.

As you’ve seen here, the Costa Brava has a lot to offer every kind of holiday seeker. Spend a few days relaxing at the beach, see Dali’s incredible theatre museum, wander around charming Medieval towns and hike the foothills of the Pyrenees.

The Best Family Vacations in Spain – Costa Brava, Costa Dorada & Costa Verde

Costa Brava for the best family vacations in Spain

Finding a destination that keeps everyone happy for a family vacation in Spain can be a complicated task.

What are the best places in Spain for families?

Spain has a lot to offer. With beautiful beaches, countless activities, good food , a rich culture, and incredible nature Spain is a great travel destination for a family vacation.

I have been traveling to Spain (and on and off living in Spain) for 15 years now. I have been lucky enough to see a lot of this diverse country and meet a wide range of Spanish people.

Because of its size and diverse offering, Spain really is a suitable country for any type of traveler. But, because it is such an easy country to travel in and offers a lot of facilities for families, it is especially suitable for family travel .

In fact, it’s often listed as one of the best countries to visit with kids .

In this article I want to share with you three popular and beautiful coastal regions that offer some of the best places in Spain for families: Costa Brava, Costa Dorada, and Costa Verde .

All three regions have great options for a family vacation in Spain, so let me share something about each of these.

3 Regions for a Family Vacation in Spain

3 Coastal regions for the best family vacation in Spain

1. The Best of The Costa Brava for Families

Costa Brava for the best family vacation in Spain

The Costa Brava is located in northeastern Spain, in the province of Girona. It is well-known for the many resort towns such as Lloret de Mar and Blanes.

Apart from those resort towns though there are also many hidden gems on the Costa Brava. Charming seaside towns, typical fishing villages, impressive cliffs, diverse beaches, and quaint coves.

The Costa Brava is a diverse and beautiful region with a very rich history.

The area boasts significant ruins, dating back to Roman, Greek, and even Palaeolithic times. Additionally, there are many medieval villages and castles on the Costa Brava.

The Costa Brava has long been a popular destination for family vacations in Spain and as a result offers great facilities for family travel.

A Selection of Towns Worth Visiting on the Costa Brava:

Roses , a historic town dating back to the 8th century BC, with a notable seafaring tradition.

Roses is the only coastal town on the Costa Brava that faces west, which means it offers great sunsets.

Pals , a medieval town on top of a hill, overlooking its main city beach, Platja de Pals.

It is not as well-known as most beach resorts but with its pretty cobbled streets, craft shops, and traditional bars and restaurants it is a lovely place to visit.

Begur , a medieval village with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses located below the ruins of a stone castle.

Begur is great for water sports such as snorkeling and kayaking, thanks to its many coves and its proximity to the Medes Islands, which are a marine reserve and a popular location for scuba diving.

Calella de Palafrugell , an attractive fishing village with beautiful whitewashed houses and narrow streets.

It is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages on the entire Mediterranean, offering rocky coves, sandy beaches, and excellent fish restaurants.

Tossa de Mar , a cute town with cobbled streets, constructed around an impressive medieval castle.

The surrounding countryside with its valleys and rivers is a great place to hike and cycle and the city beach is perfect for a day of relaxing with the family.

Blanes , one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Costa Brava.

Despite being so popular, Blanes still retains its original charm. Its harbor, sandy bays and small rocky coves, historical buildings, and the botanical gardens are well worth checking out.

Costa Brava’s Best Beaches

Costa Brava's many child friendly beaches makes it perfect for a family vacation to Spain

The Costa Brava’s coastline is almost 300 kilometers (186 miles) long and very varied, with wide bays, small coves, and high cliffs.

Whether you are looking for a beautiful stretch of golden sand or a tiny, hidden cove, you can find it here.

The whitewashed town of Tamariu boasts one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of the Costa Brava : Platja de Tamariu. It has great water sports facilities and connects to several smaller coves.

The village of Cadaqués is home to the Cap de Creus Nature Reserve which forms a series of beautiful, unspoilt coves.

Or, check out Empuriabrava, which offers some of the Costa Brava’s widest and longest beaches with excellent facilities.

La Cala del Golfet , in Calella de Palafrugell, is another stunning beach worth visiting.

But there are so many beautiful beaches that it is impossible for me to choose a favorite. I therefore highly recommend exploring as many different beaches as you can if you decide to take your family vacation in Spain to the Costa Brava!

Costa Brava’s Food

The Costa Brava is well known for its cuisine and boasts a surprising number of really high quality restaurants (including one of the best restaurants in the world ).

Costa Brava’s cuisine mainly consists of fish and seafood, olives, fresh vegetables, pasta, rice, and olive oil . But, since the north of the Costa Brava is close to the Pyrenees, there are also excellent meat and game dishes.

And, being such a popular tourist destination, you can find many international dishes here as well and enough variety to keep everyone in the family happy.

Family Fun on the Costa Brava

There are several waterparks on the Costa Brava which are renowned for their safety, comfort, and quality.

At many beaches, you will find all sorts of water sports and great boat trips. In the villages, you can find mini golf, go-karts, and many other activities for the whole family.

Tip: the Costa Brava is a beautiful destination for a summer vacation in Spain. But, that does mean it attracts a lot of tourists, especially in July and August.

If you are looking for a quieter family vacation in Spain you might want to avoid these months or stay in smaller towns slightly more inland.

2. The Best of The Costa Dorada for Families

A perfect family vacation in Spain - Costa Dorada

Costa Dorada means Golden Coast which is a perfect name for this part of Spain’s Mediterranean coast filled with long stretches of golden sand beaches and numerous resort towns .

The Costa Dorada extends south and west from Barcelona and is a surprisingly multi-faceted destination. It offers a wide range of fun activities, culture, nature, and history in a tranquil setting.

If you want more than sun, sea and sand on your vacation to Spain then venture away from the beach to the Costa Dorada’s lowlands.

This area between the coast and the mountains boasts an expansive natural landscape with quiet villages and farms surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and almond trees. And check out the delta of the river Ebro with its labyrinth of lakes.

Many towns on the Costa Dorada are built around a castle or a fortress. And most are still small and traditional, not overdeveloped with tourism.

If you want to combine time at the beach with some culture and sightseeing , the Costa Dorada is a great choice for a comfortable family vacation in Spain.

A Selection of Towns Worth Visiting on the Costa Dorada

Tarragona , Costa Dorada’s largest city, which is as well-known for its Roman ruins as it is for inventive seafood.

The town has some of the best Roman remains in Spain and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage City .

Sitges , known as the gay-friendly party town with bustling nightlife and numerous festivals.

But despite being such a popular tourist destination it does retain much of its old-world charm, has a lovely old town and some good museums.

Reus , the birthplace of architect Antoni Gaudí. It’s a lovely town with gorgeous architecture.

Tortosa , an underrated inland town with an impressive fortress and some good museums.

El Perello , a charming agricultural village, famed for its honey. Check out the well-maintained center with its bustling market and town square.

Just outside of this town you can find La Cueva de la Mallada; a cave with prehistoric cave paintings.

Torredembarra with its beautiful stretch of fine, sandy beach. It combines an ultramodern harbor and excellent shopping, with a medieval influence in its architecture and a long maritime history.

Altafulla , a small fishing village that is quickly becoming a preferred tourist destination.

Situated on the banks of the river Gaia, the town has retained its ancient character, combined with excellent amenities and many cultural attractions.

Sant Carlos de la Rapita , a major fishing port and paradise for food lovers. The town is filled with excellent seafood restaurants. Water sports are also popular in the area.

The beautiful medieval monasteries of Poblet and Santes Creus .

Finally, take a day trip to Barcelona if you want to include some great museums, culture, and city vibes into your family vacation.

Costa Dorada’s Best Beaches

The Costa Dorada has a great offering of beautiful beaches.

Cunit beach , split into seven half-moon-shaped mini beaches is especially family friendly with its calm, shallow waters and great facilities including toilets, water sports rentals, and beachside restaurants.

Long, sandy Calafell Beach is another favorite during family vacations in Spain and a great place if you want to combine a trip to the beach with some sightseeing in the historic town of Calafell. There are children’s playgrounds at the beach and the water is calm and clean, making it perfect for younger children.

Other beautiful, family friendly sandy beaches include Altafulla Beach , Platja de Tamarit , Playa del Regueral , and Riumar Beach (with great sand dunes).

But the good thing about the Costa Dorada is that most beaches are suitable for kids of all ages so just check out a number of different beaches during your stay here!

Costa Dorada’s Food

The Costa Dorada offers typical Mediterranean food and is mainly known for its fish and seafood.

With its many traditional Spanish towns, you will have many opportunities to taste authentic Catalan dishes.

Family Fun on the Costa Dorada

The best family vacation in Spain on the on the Costa Dorada, - theme parks

Apart from perfect family-friendly beaches, the Costa Dorada is also home to PortAventura, a large theme park that is often named as one of the best in Europe.

Additionally there is a popular water park in Pineda, a fun magic show at the House of Illusion in Salou, and plenty of activities in each town to keep the entire family entertained.

3. The Best of The Costa Verde for Families

Best family vacation in Spain - Costa Verde

The Costa Verde, meaning Green Coast, is a lush, green coastal strip in the Asturias region, in northwest Spain. It is a more rugged coastline with spectacular cliffs, scattered sandy beaches, national parks, and dramatic mountain ranges.

If you love nature, hiking, mountain villages, great forests, and a view of snow-capped mountains , then the Costa Verde is for you.

The Costa Verde is wild and beautiful, with an abundance of caves to explore and breathtaking scenery to admire. Visit Somiedo National Park to try and catch a glimpse of a bear or a gray wolf.

And, the Costa Verde is also one of the only places in Western Europe where brown bears still roam.

If you are looking for a more active family vacation in Spain, the Costa Verde is perfect!

A Selection of Towns Worth Visiting on the Costa Verde

Cudillero , one of the most charming fishing villages on the Costa Verde.

The village offers colorful houses, a beautiful view as you climb up the hill and a traditional Asturian town feel. Additionally, Cudillero is close to one of Asturia’s most famous beaches: Playa del Silencio.

Gijon , which began as a fishing village nearly 3000 years ago. It is now considered the maritime capital of Asturias with one of Spain’s busiest shipping ports.

Gijon is a modern, energetic, and prosperous town but has managed to conserve that authentic fishing-village vibe.

The city has great opportunities for shopping, a beautiful seaside promenade, and a wide range of restaurants. It also offers plenty of squares, parks, and museums to keep the whole family entertained.

Ribadesella , a pretty town in a bay, surrounded by high mountains, beaches, and steep cliffs.

The town is known for the Tito Bustillo Cave, which is an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site. Prehistoric drawings of more than 14,000 years old have been found here – some of the oldest prehistoric art in the world.

Cangas de Onis , which forms the entrance to the Picos de Europa National Park. The most popular attraction here is a medieval bridge and a small chapel built in a small cave, high above the ground.

Llanes , a charming, historical village. It is one of the most visited villages on the Costa Verde boasting remains of a medieval wall, a 13th-century tower, and a 15th-century palace. It is also close to many great beaches.

What makes the Costa Verde such a great part of Spain though is its countless small fishing villages and mountain towns . Therefore take my suggestions merely as a guideline and definitely go on a road trip to explore some of the other adorable places this region has to offer.

Costa Verde’s Best Beaches

beaches to visit during a family vacation in Spain - Costa Verde

Costa Verde’s coastal area is both stunning and dramatic; with long sandy beaches, coves, cliffs, and hidden caves against a backdrop of rugged mountains.

Some of the most stunning beaches include the Playa de Cuevas del Mar (the Beach of Sea Caves), the hidden gem Playa de Xago, and the wild gem Playa Cobijeru .

Do check out Playa de Gulpiyuri , the “beach without a sea”: a small inland beach and one of Asturias best-kept secrets.

Long, sandy Playa de Rodiles makes a great beach for any family with kids and Playa de la Griega , with dinosaur footprints still present in the rock formations, is also a great recommendation.

But, similar to the other two Costas, this part of Spain offers a nearly endless number of beaches so do go out and explore!

Tip: Keep in mind that many of the beaches on the Costa Verde are fairly remote and offer limited facilities so do bring enough water, snacks and anything else you may need for a beach day.

Costa Verde’s Food

Asturian food is based on wholesome and hearty home cooking.

You will find a lot of meat and rich dishes here. The most famous regional dish is Fabada Asturiana , a rich stew made with large white beans ( fabes de la Granja ), pork shoulder (llacón), morcilla (black pudding), chorizo, and saffron.

Asturias is also famous for its cider , so do try that when traveling to the Costa Verde.

Family Fun on the Costa Verde

With so many outdoor adventures the Costa Verde is a great region to keep your kids active.

If your kids are into dinosaurs then check out the Jurassic Museum of Asturias – the building itself is a giant dinosaur’s footprint and it has exhibitions, workshops and play areas for all ages.

Traveling to the Costa Verde might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you are considering a family vacation in Spain. But that makes this area just that tiny bit extra special!

The Costa Verde is much more unspoilt than the other coastal areas of Spain. It is absolutely stunning, the people are friendly and it will show you a side of Spain you don’t see in every travel guide.

6 thoughts on “The Best Family Vacations in Spain – Costa Brava, Costa Dorada & Costa Verde”

Thank you for sharing such an informative post. Spain is the most popular place to visit.

If you are coming to Spain for the weather then in March I would go to the south. Have you considered the area around Malaga? I am sure there are plenty of nice villas to rent there and the area offers a lot: – Malaga, a cute city with a good mix of history, tourism and beach culture. – Marbella, Fuengirola and Torremolinos: the touristy coastal towns. – Antequera and Ronda: my recommendations for day trips. – Enough nature for hikes

I would look into this area, see if you can find a villa or townhouse you like to rent, fly into Malaga, rent a car at the airport and explore the area during your trip.

I hope this helps and enjoy your family vaction in Spain! 🙂

We are trying to plan a family trip for March 2020 (12-20th). 4 adults and a 13 year old. It doesn’t seem that it’s warm enough at that time for a beach vacation, but I’m wondering if you could suggest another area in Spain that would work for us. We like to rent a place that is comfortable – maybe with a heated pool and places close by for day trips. Maybe a small village. My request is so general and I haven’t done any research on areas in Spain so please don’t hesitate to tell me to go someplace else!!

By just looking at these photos, Spain is incredibly one of the best family vacation destinations. Thank you so much for this article.

Me and my family will book a flight to Spain and go to the wonderful island of Fuerteventura. I’ve heard so many great things about this place and i’m just fascinated about the island. I’ve decided not to waste any minutes and booked a flight next month with my family. This will be the first time we will be going out of the country and I’m really excited as much as my family is.

There are so much things to explore in Spain. Once I thought I saw the most, I started reading blogs and found there is so much more to see. Those are lovely family destinations indeed!

The best of Costa Brava – the ultimate guide

Costa Brava is a stunning region in Catalonia that extends from the Mediterranean coast to the majestic Pyrenees, which form a natural border with France. Costa Brava loosely translates as ‘wild coast’, a reference to the rocky coastline with its spectacular cliffs and countless coves, a favourite haunt for pirates in the 17th century. Famous for its beaches and sunshine, Costa Brava is a treasure trove of historic, cultural and gastronomic delights! A Costa Brava road trip is the best way to explore the region at your own leisure – mix up beach time with a wander through medieval towns, and visits to cultural attractions with hikes along the coast or in the mountains. In between, you’ll feast on some of the best food and wines that Spain has to offer! Here’s my guide to the best places to visit in Costa Brava.

best-places-costa-brava-guide-photo

This Costa Brava guide contains links to three services I often use myself and can recommend: Skyscanner (flights), Booking.com (hotel bookings), Rentalcars.com (car hire) and GetYourGuide (easy-to-book tours). If you make a booking via one of these services, I will receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you). These commissions help me to maintain my blog and share more travel experiences with you.

The ultimate guide to the Best of Costa Brava

I’ve visited Costa Brava several times and explored the region quite extensively. Based on these trips, I’ve compiled this guide featuring the best places to visit on a road trip in Costa Brava including my recommendations for hotels and restaurants. You can do this in 1-2 weeks but I suggest taking your time to enjoy these places. I’ve also included a suggested 15-day ‘ Best of Costa Brava ‘ self-drive itinerary below.

The line in the map denotes the sequence of the places described in this guide: starting in Girona, then the coast (south to north) before moving inland towards the Pyrenees. You can pick up a rental car at Barcelona Airport or in Girona. Find flights to Barcelona with KLM.

Girona is less than a two-hour drive from Barcelona. Often overlooked by tourists, Girona is a gorgeous city located smack in the middle of the confluence of four rivers. As a consequence of its strategic location, Girona was occupied at different times in its history by the Romans, Visigoths, Moors and the French. Its medieval core is still intact, as are large parts of its medieval city walls. Fans of the Game of Thrones series shouldn’t miss Girona!

The highlights in Girona include walking its medieval walls, exploring the old Jewish Quarter and visiting the magnificent Cathedral . Read about things to see in Girona and walking the medieval walls of Girona .

In the city centre, grab a meal at Le Bistrot , a popular restaurant that serves traditional Catalan fare. In addition, scenes from the Game of Thrones were filmed at the steps right outside the restaurant. There’s a Game of Thrones walking tour which fans can join.

Just outside Girona, you’ll find one of the world’s best restaurants: El Celler de Can Roca. A meal here is a truly extraordinary (not to mention unforgettable) experience! Read about my meal at El Celler de Can Roca .

The coast (south to north)

The Costa Brava coast is what most visitors come for, and rightfully so. You’ll find picturesque towns, nature parks, sandy beaches and secluded coves lapped by the crystal-clear water of the Mediterranean Sea.

costa-brava-places-photo

Blanes – Lloret de Mar – Tossa de Mar

The stretch between Blanes and Lloret de Mar , with its beaches, hotels, restaurants and bars is a popular holiday spot but look a bit further and you’ll find quieter beaches with golden sands and lush nature reserves. Visit the beautiful Jardins de Santa Clotilde park for a tranquil stroll and gorgeous sea views, hike through the Massis de les Cadiretes nature reserve or go on a leisurely coastal drive along the edges of the reserve (heading north along the coast from Tossa de Mar). Beautiful beaches in the area include Cala Sa Boadella (a section of which is for nudists) and Cala Treumal .

Search for accommodations in/around Lloret de Mar.

Jardins de Santa Clotilde photo

Tossa de Mar , with its wide beaches against the backdrop of an impressive castle, is a lovely town to visit. Don’t miss the 12th century Castell de Tossa de Mar with its fortification walls and towers.

Palamós and beyond

Palamós is a bustling fishing town with long beaches, a harbour packed with fishing boats and a yacht marina. A visit to the Fish Museum (Museu de la Pesca) and fish auction at the harbour is a fascinating experience.

The coast northwest of Palamós is full of little coves with gorgeous, secluded beaches backed by cliffs and pine trees. Suggested beaches include La Fosca , Cala s’Alguer , Platja de Castell and Cala Estreta .

Costa Brava coastal trails

The rocky cliffs between these beaches are a hikers paradise! Part of the Cami de Ronda (Costa Brava trails that wind along the coast for about 200 km!), this particular stretch is famous for its stunning sea views and towering cliffs.

Calella de Palafrugell to Begur

One of the most scenic parts of the Costa Brava coast stretches from Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc , past Tamariu , to Begur . This part of the coast consists of beautiful beaches, rocky inlets, pine-covered cliffs and picturesque towns and villages. The Cami de Ronda continues along this stretch of the coast.

calella-de-palafrugell-photo

There’s a multitude of charming hotels and excellent restaurants along the coast. My favourite hotels in this area, which also have outstanding restaurants, are Sant Roc (Calella de Palafrugell), Casamar (Llafranc), El Far (Llafranc) and Aigua Blava (near Begur).

Search for accommodations in Calella de Palafrugell or Llafranc .

Begur is a hillside town overlooked by a 16th century castle. There’s a lovely square packed with terraces, and cobblestone alleys with a good choice of restaurants and cafés, some tucked away in beautiful courtyards.

From Begur, take the road to Sa Tuna , a hamlet on the coast with a small beach. The road winds through quiet neighbourhoods and thick forests, and offers beautiful vistas of the rugged coast. Check out the fabulous Cap Sa Sal Hotel for a romantic stay or a top-notch meal.

Baix Empordá

Close to this part of the coast, you’ll find the agricultural Baix Empordá region; a colourful patchwork of fields, fruit orchards and beautiful medieval villages.

Baix Empordá photo

Peratallada

Peratallada is a fortified medieval town that’s definitely worth a visit. The town, with its 11th century castle (now home to an amazing luxury hotel ), 13th century Romanesque church, gorgeous cobblestone streets and quaint squares, is a popular place for day-trippers who come here to soak up the medieval atmosphere but stick around in the evenings for a romantic dinner at one of the numerous restaurants. I can recommend Restaurante Candelaria ! Peratallada also makes for a good base from which to explore the Baix Empordá. Search for accommodations in Peratallada.

For a dose of indulgence, I can recommend the Mas de Torrent Hotel and Spa , which is situated a short drive away from Peratallada. The hotel also has an excellent restaurant! Read about my stay at Mas de Torrent .

Pals is one of the most impressive medieval towns in Costa Brava. Situated in the Baix Empordá region, a short distance from Begur, Pals’ main attraction is its beautifully restored medieval quarter. Pals is also home to Vicus , a restaurant where I’ve had some truly memorable meals!

Search for accommodations in Pals.

pals-costa-brava-photo

Púbol is another attractive town to visit. The main attraction is the Castell Gala Salvador Dalí , a castle that the great painter bought for his wife, Gala. The castle forms one of the three Dalí museums in Costa Brava (known as the ‘Dalí Triangle’ and also includes the Dalí Theatre Museum in Figueres and Casa Dalí in Port Lligat).

dali-triangle-pubol-photo

Monells lies just east of Púbol and is another atmospheric medieval village that’s worth visiting, if only to explore its arched streets and arcades.

If you fancy staying in a castle, look up Castell d’Empordà near Púbol, a beautifully-restored castle that overlooks the Empordà plains. Its restaurant, Drac , is another terrific dining option I can highly recommend!

Also nearby is the village of Colomers , where hot-air balloon flights over Costa Brava are operated from. It’s a wonderful experience that I highly recommend. You can make a booking here .

Begur to Roses

North of Begur, the hills make way for broad plains and long stretches of sandy beaches. There are also several golf resorts here such as the Empordà Golf Club and La Costa Golf Beach Resort . Nature lovers will enjoy Aiguamolls del Baix Empordà , a nature reserve with wetlands that’s great for bird-watching, and beaches with a stunning view of the jagged tops of the Illes Medes islands.

Illes Medes

Illes Medes is a marine reserve consisting of 7 rocky islets. There’s abundant marine life to be seen, which visitors can enjoy on a snorkelling or submarine trip. The Illes Medes boat trips depart from the L’Escartit harbour.

illes-medes-photo

Further north, you’ll find another nature reserve worth visiting for its coastal cliffs and beautiful sea views: Parc Natural del Montgri . Near the town of L’Escala, history lovers will enjoy the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya – Empúries (Catalan Archeological Museum Empúries) where ancient Greek and Roman ruins have been excavated.

archaeological-museum-catalonia-empuries-photo

At the sweeping Gulf of Roses, you’ll find, along its seemingly endless beaches, a myriad of camping grounds and another beautiful nature reserve: Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l’Empordà . The protected wetlands in this park are famous for its bird-watching opportunities.

In nearby Empuriabrava are two attractions for those who love to ‘fly’: the Windoor Realfly experience and Skydive Empuriabrava ! I’ve experienced both and I’ll never forget my Costa Brava skydive !

Castelló d’Empúries

Also worth a visit is the little town of Castelló d’Empúries , with its medieval centre. Stroll around its atmospheric streets and visit the impressive Basilica of Santa Maria. Every year, the town hosts the Terra de Trobadors medieval festival which attracts medieval enthusiasts from around the world.

Basilica of Santa Maria

At the top of the Gulf of Roses is the town of Roses , a lively town with a long beach boulevard lined by hotels and restaurants. There are various historical sites which can be visited such as the Citadel and the Trinity Castle . Head up to Puig Rom (a reasonable hike) to visit several other archeological sites as well as to enjoy the stunning views of the gulf.

roses-trinity-castle-photo

From Roses, the Canyelles road curls its way along the coast past cliffs, coves and smaller beaches. There are various upscale hotels here such as Hotel Vistabella and A lmadraba Park Hotel which offer beautiful views of the gulf.

Search for accommodations in Roses.

Cap de Creus

Northwest of Roses, the Cap de Creus peninsula beckons. A rocky, mountainous region of wind-swept slopes covered by thick gorse, quaint coastal villages, and crystal-clear coves, Cap de Creus is perfect for a leisurely drive or lengthy hikes. Read more about places to visit in Cap de Creus .

Search for accommodations in Cap de Creus.

The charming fishing village of Cadaqués , with its whitewashed houses and gorgeous harbour, is famed as being a favourite haunt for artists and writers, and shouldn’t be missed. It also makes for a great base from which to explore the rest of the peninsula.

cadaques-cap-de-creus-photo

In Cadaqués, drop by at Can Rafa for a great meal. The restaurant is owned by the Martín Faíxo family who also own Mas Perafita , a gorgeous winery/B&B in the hills of Cap de Creus.

Port Lligat

Continue further to Port Lligat to visit Casa Dalí , the former residence of the great artist Salvador Dalí – this is a wondrous experience you shouldn’t miss.

casa-dali-port-lligat

Another famous attraction in the area is the romanesque abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes near the town of Port de la Selva .

Inland to Figueres

From Cap de Creus, head west towards Figueres, the largest town in the area. Just off the N260 road is another gorgeous golf resort: Hotel Peralada Wine Spa and Golf . The village of Peralada , with its 13th century castle (open to visitors), makes for an interesting stop for its impressive armoury and library.

peralada-castle-photo

Figueres , the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, is a popular touristic town primarily due to the Dalí Theatre Museum , which the great artist designed himself. I highly recommend a visit to this fascinating museum and the adjacent Jewels Collection. For lunch, restaurants I recommend include Restaurante Duran (a classic in Figueres frequented by Dalí himself) and El Lloc Cafe Bistrot.

La Garrotxa to the Girona Pyrenees

The Pyrenees mountain range forms a natural border with France, rising to great heights further inland. This region is dotted with picturesque medieval towns, forests, low hills and ancient volcanoes that gradually make way for the mighty snow-capped peaks of the Girona Pyrenees.

costa brava family trip

Besalú is a stunning medieval town in the hills of the Garrotxa region. The first thing that will grab your attention as you approach the town is the magnificent 12th century Romanesque bridge over the Fluviá river. The bridge leads visitors into the town, with its arcaded streets, cobblestone alleys and squares.

besalu-bridge-photo

There’s a wonderful array of shops selling local produce and handicraft. Other historic monuments in the town include the 11th century Sant Pere church and 12th century Jewish bath (mikveh).

besalu-street-photo

Castellfollit de la Roca

West of Besalú, on the A26 road to the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone , you’ll pass the medieval village of Castellfollit de la Roca . Spectacularly perched on a basalt cliff that was formed by lava flows, this pretty village makes for a great photo stop.

castelfollit-roca-costa-brava-photo

La Garrotxa volcanic zone

The La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone is a beautiful, forested area with 40 volcanic cones and ancient lava flows. You can hike up to the crater rim and into the crater but don’t expect a typical volcano (like Vesuvius or Etna). Instead, along the well-marked trails, you’ll find lush vegetation, different coloured rock surfaces and gorgeous views (don’t miss the viewpoint at Mirador Puig Rodó). The town of Olot is a good base from which to explore the area. I recommend staying at one of the converted farmhouses or cottages in the hills around Olot such as Casa Rural Mas Garganta . I also recommend going on a hot-air balloon flight over the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone.

Search for accommodations in La Garrotxa.

la-garrotxa-volcanic-zone-photo

Santa Pau is another medieval village in the Garrotxa region that I absolutely love. Located near the La Garrotxa volcanoes, Santa Pau is tiny but boasts gorgeous porticoes, alleys and arcades as well as a 15th century Gothic church. Moreover, this wonderfully atmospheric village is home to another of my favourite restaurants in Costa Brava: Cal Sastre .

santa-pau-catalonia-photo

Ripoll lies to the west of the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone and is famous for its magnificent Benedictine monastery, a true Romanesque gem. The Monastery of Santa María de Ripoll , founded around the 9th century, is considered to be one of the most important monastic centres in Catalonia.

santa-maria-de-ripoll-monastery-photo

For those interested in more Romanesque art, continue to Sant Joan de les Abadesses , home to the Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses (9th century), approximately 10km from Ripoll. The village, located on the banks of the River Ter, also has a gorgeous medieval bridge (in Gothic style) that’s worth a photo stop.

Girona Pyrenees

From Ripoll, follow the N260 road northwards. You’ll soon be surrounded by the breathtaking mountain landscapes of the Girona Pyrenees. This mountain region, with its glistening peaks, awe-inspiring granite surfaces, serene valleys and shimmering lakes, is popular in the winter for its skiing opportunities, and hiking in the summer months.

Search for accommodations in the Girona Pyrenees.

There are many spots to enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery such as the Cerdanya and Camprodon valleys, and the simply magical Vall de Núria . This area has the most popular ski resorts in Catalonia such as La Molina and Masella . In the summer, it’s a mecca for hikers!

costa brava family trip

If you’re accustomed to winding roads, continue past Camprodon to the village of Beget . Often listed as one of the prettiest villages in Catalonia, Beget is a charming medieval village, and its location, tucked in a valley surrounded by thick vegetation, is gorgeous.

costa brava family trip

Vall de Núria

The Vall de Núria (Valley of Núria) is a stunning valley almost completely enclosed by imposing mountains, some almost 3,000m high. Popular as a getaway for nature enthusiasts, it also attracts pilgrims who come to visit the Shrine of Núria . Cars are not permitted in the valley. Instead, visitors take the scenic 12.5km-long Vall de Núria Rack Railway that connects Vall de Núria with Ribes de Freser and Queralbs. Check the Vall de Núria website for more info.

costa brava family trip

Further to the west, the town of Puigcerdà lies just a few kilometers from the border with France and is mainly used as a base for a myriad of mountain activities. This vibrant town has many restaurants, cafés and shops (centred around Plaza de Santa Maria), and a photogenic lake. The rooftop of the Bell tower offers beautiful views of the town and the mountains.

Search for accommodations in Puigcerdà.

costa brava family trip

Cross the border into France from Puigcerdà, drive a further 1.5 kms, and you’ll find yourself back in Spain, in the little Catalan enclave of Llívia ! Completely surrounded by France, Llívia is a charming medieval town with slate-roofed houses that’s great for a stroll and a meal at one of its excellent restaurants.

How to get to Costa Brava

Costa Brava lies in the northeast corner of Spain. The capital, Girona, is connected by trains from Barcelona (Estació Sants) and France (via Figueres). The Girona-Costa Brava Airport has connections with major cities in Europe (primarily operated by holiday and low-cost airlines). The closest international hub airport is Barcelona. From Barcelona Airport, it’s less than a two-hour drive to Costa Brava. There’s also a scheduled bus service from the airport to Blanes.

15-day ‘Best of Costa Brava’ self-drive itinerary

This 14 night/15 day self-drive itinerary takes you past the best places in Costa Brava as described above. If you’re flying into Barcelona or Girona, I recommend picking up a rental car upon arrival. Planning to visit Barcelona? Read my top ten things to do in Barcelona post.

3 nights: Girona Pyrenees . Head further into the Pyrenees, stopping at the Santa Maria de Ripoll monastery. Take the rack railway to Vall de Núria. Wander around Puigcerdà and have lunch in Llívia. Suggested base: in/around Ribes de Freser and/or Puigcerdà.

A Place In The Sun's Laura Hamilton cuddles up to married man on romantic trip

The TV presenter and star of A Place In The Sun puckered up to her businessman boyfriend on her trip in the Costa Brava

Laura Hamilton shows public affection with boyfriend James Pettigrew

  • 14:19, 4 Sep 2024
  • Updated 16:30, 4 Sep 2024

TV Host Laura Hamilton manages to mix business with pleasure as she kisses her boyfriend in Spain close to where she has been working. The A Place In The Sun presenter, 42, was seen filming on the Costa Brava last month.

She is still there, but has some romantic downtime and she was seen with 44-year-old businessman James Pettigrew.

The couple were photographed sharing kisses and affectionate moments inside a car and displaying their affection in public during a stroll, accompanied by Laura's two children Rocco and Tahila.

Pettigrew, who is in the process of getting divorced, is reported to have started a new relationship with Hamilton, who divorced her ex-husband Alex Goward in 2022, in January. And the pair could not look happier in the new photos together.

Speaking on social media at the end of August, Laura had told her 200,000 followers: "I am filming this week on the Costa Brava close to Barcelona with my favourite little crew with me…"

There had been no sign of James then but, he now appears to have now joined her for a romantic getaway. The pair smiled and looked in love as they strolled along in Spain.

Laura wore a turquoise bikini top and black shorts and stoked her arm on James who had matching shorts and a yellow T shirt on for their walk. The pair also shared kisses in their car during the day trip out.

Laura and James, who shares two daughters with his estranged wife Jackie, were pictured smiling together at the Scottish FA Cup Final in May while enjoying corporate tickets to the match between Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers.

In August, Laura told Fabulous Magazine: "I'm dating. I'm having fun. No, I don't have the apps. I've tried those in the past three years. I went on Raya and thought: "This is not for me." I like to meet people organically."

Last year mother-of-two Laura has spoken positively about being a “glass half full-person” amid her divorce. She split from husband Alex Goward after nine years of marriage. The couple have two children together, Rocco, aged 10, and Tahlia, aged eight.

She told Hello! magazine: “You say ‘content, but I have moments when I feel this is tough, this is hard, this is not what I expected my life to be. But I’m a glass half-full person and I have to be positive. I have to be strong. Am I making the best of the situation as I can right now? Yes, 100 per cent. But I do get sad because things went the way they did. I might look like everything is fine all the time and that’s how things come across on media media, but no I’d be a robot if I didn’t have those emotions.

“Do I let myself cry? Yes, all the time. And I encourage Rocco and Tahlia to always share their feelings. It is better to talk and let the emotions out than bottle up."

Since 2012, Laura has acted as one of a team of rotating presenters on Channel 4's lifestyle series A Place In The. She began her TV career in 2003 appearing on children's programme Fun Song Factory on CITV - alongside JLS' Aston Merrygold.

Popular Laura has also appeared on Dancing On Ice in 2011 where she came second.
