If you want to get away from the cruise terminal and see a bit of Grand Cayman without renting your own vehicle, an island tour will be your cheapest option. Although a private taxi tour will cost more, the experience is almost always better. Keep in mind that renting your own vehicle and exploring on your own is in the same relative price range as a tour.

About Cayman

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory and as such English is the official language and people drive on the left. The Islands are on Eastern Standard Time (or GMT -5) however daylight savings are not observed. The currency is the Cayman Islands (CI) dollar. Although US dollars are accepted island-wide, change will always be given in CI$. The exchange rate is fixed to the US dollar: CI$1 is US$1.25 or US$1 to CI$0.80. Banks are open 9am-4pm Monday to Friday and there are plenty of ATMs in George Town and across the island.

Getting Around

There are plenty of ways to get around Grand Cayman including some inexpensive options. Whilst it can feel a bit overwhelming when you arrive as the George Town port is bustling with activity, the information below should help you make the best choice for your needs.

How you get around will largely depending on the amount of time you have and how much you'd like to spend. Make sure to think about the logistics of your day in Grand Cayman in relation to all the activities you'd like to do.

  • Walking: If you intend to stay in the George Town area then you will be able to get around on foot with no problems. Check out our online maps of Cayman or pick up a copy of Explore magazine which you’ll find in racks located around George Town and across the island as it has excellent maps of the George Town area with shops, restaurants and historical sites clearly marked.
  • Taxi : Taxi fares are based charged per person and are fixed by the government, although it is worth confirming the price before you set off. There will be plenty of taxis waiting at the port when your ship docks. Taxis look like mini vans and drivers prefer to have a minimum of four passengers to make it worth their while.
  • Bus : Buses are a very cost effective way to get around, most journeys are between CI$1-CI$3. Buses look like mini vans - you can hail one by waving your hand when they toot at you. The bus depot is next to the library in George Town (across from Heroes Square fountain). When you board tell the driver where you would like to go and usually you can be dropped off outside the door. Click here for more information on bus routes in Cayman .
  • Rental Car : To make the most of your time in port it is worth considering renting a car to give you the flexibility to see what you want at your own pace. Car rental agencies offer one-day prices for cruise ship passengers and will meet you at the port. The island is small and easy to navigate so you won’t need to worry about wasting time getting lost. Some recommended car rental agencies in Cayman include Go Cayman Car Rental and Economy & Discount Car Rentals .

Frequently Asked Questions About Cruise Excursions In Grand Cayman

Got questions? Don’t worry, we’ve got the answers to the most frequently asked questions about cruise excursions in Grand Cayman.

What do I wear on a cruise excursion in Grand Cayman?

What you wear is going to depend on your particular excursion. If you’re going to the beach you’ll need a swimsuit and coverup, sandals, and maybe snorkel gear. If you’re exploring, you just need light, comfortable clothes and shoes.

You definitely want to remember sunglasses, and/or a hat, and sunscreen. If you’re going in the ocean, you need to have reef-safe sunscreen , meaning it does not contain Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, or Octocrylene, among other ingredients. Just because the label says “reef-safe” it does not mean that it is. Instead, opt for a mineral sunscreen, like Blue Lizard , Thinksport, or Sun Bum Mineral .

Do cruise ships tender in Grand Cayman?

Yes, Grand Cayman is a tender port. This means that cruise ships anchor in the harbor and you take a small boat to the port, which usually takes about 5-10 minutes. There are many reasons why a location might be a tender port of call, including shallow water, delicate reefs and other environmental reasons, or space limitations.

Do you need a shore excursion in Grand Cayman?

You’re never obligated to book a cruise excursion at any port, and Grand Cayman is no exception. It’s a safe island so you are absolutely able to explore on your own, but we recommend purchasing a shore excursion through a reputable company. Things sell out, so if there’s something you want to be sure to be able to do, book your spot in advance.

Do I need a passport to get off the ship in Grand Cayman?

If you are a US citizen on a closed loop cruise, meaning you begin and end at the same US port, you technically don’t need a passport, you only need an original birth certificate and a government issued ID. That being said, I do not recommend cruising without a passport.

Passports protect you when you are in foreign countries. If you are delayed, miss your ship, or have an emergency and need to fly home, having your passport makes it a heck of a lot easier to get back to the US. I strongly recommend everyone leaving the US has a valid US passport.

Do you tip on excursions in Grand Cayman?

Yes. It is expected that you tip your tour guide, your taxi driver, your waitstaff, and other folks providing services. Many restaurants include a gratuity in the final cost of the meal. You can tip in US dollars or Cayman dollars. Somewhere between 10-20% is acceptable depending on service received.

Grand Cayman Island, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, is a stretch of a 22-mile tropical paradise surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. It houses George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, and is best known for its diverse sea life and coral reefs. With so many miles of nature, culture, and adventure, there is something fun for everyone. Consider starting with an island tour from Shore Excursions.

Grand Cayman Ocean Adventures and Island Excursions

There are so many ways to get up close and personal with all of the marine life in Grand Cayman. See the beautiful coral and sea life by reef snorkeling at the Coral Gardens in the North Sound. Take a Stingray City Sandbar tour on one of our Grand Cayman excursions to interact with the giant stingrays swimming along the white sand floor. And take advantage of the many snorkeling spots, scuba diving, starfish beaches, kayaking, and jet skiing activities that the pristine waters of the barrier reef have to offer. Seven Mile Beach in West Bay is another must-visit location on Grand Cayman Island. This award-winning coral-sand beach is rated one of the best beaches in the world. Seven Mile Beach is public property, which means the entire length of the beach is open to the public and can be visited no matter where on the island you're staying. This beach is also one of the most developed areas on the island, so you'll find no shortage of restaurants, beach bars, hotels, and luxury resorts. Other great beaches on Grand Cayman include Rum Point, Starfish Point, and Kaibo Beach. George Town is a popular port-of-call cruise port in the Caribbean and is known for its shopping district, cuisine, activities, and nightlife. It's also home to the only place in Grand Cayman that manufactures liquor; the famous Cayman Spirits Distillery. You can charter a catamaran, go parasailing, take a glass-bottomed boat tour, or even take a submarine tour. If you like fishing, take a half-day or full-day private charter to fish the reef or the deep sea. While in George Town, also be sure to check out the famous Tortuga Rum Cake Factory, where you can sample a wide variety of rum cakes and take some home as souvenirs. For the more adventurous traveler, ditch the snorkel equipment and scuba gear for a spot on a helicopter tour excursion to view Grand Cayman from above. Or explore the cavernous underground wonders of the Cayman Crystal Caves in the tropical forest of the Northside district. You can also go horseback riding on the beach, an experience you'll never forget. And if you enjoy sightseeing, visit the Pedro St. James Castle or Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park. If a scenic route is what you crave, take the short ride to Hell, a small town with dark limestone outcroppings and fantastic local cuisine. Or visit the Turtle Farm, once a source for turtle meat production and now a conservation center for sea turtles. For some outdoor adventure, hike the mangroves and spot some wildlife. We have no shortage of Grand Cayman excursions and exciting tours for each visitor's needs.

When to Visit the Grand Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are warm year-round, with average highs in the 80s (a bathing suit is your Grand Cayman weather essential), but in colder months-January and February-the lows can drop to the high 60s. The most popular travel time in the islands is between October-April, but Grand Cayman is breathtaking no matter the time of year!

Our Grand Cayman cruise excursions offer something for every type of traveler: whether you're on a business trip or summer vacation, whether you prefer adventure or relaxation, whether you're honeymooning or bringing the kids along, you're destined for an unforgettable visit. So check out our Grand Cayman tours and excursions today to experience the beautiful vistas and charming island atmospheres right off of the cruise ship. There is so much to love about this place.

Grand Cayman's major thing is to do the stingrays. If this is your first time, then do a stingray snorkel tour. You will not regret it.

I agree! Stingray city is a must. We have done it before but it is so amazing we are doing it again :D

Putterdude

In January we did a stingray and snorkel excursion with Capt. Marvin...we had a great time.

JohninDC

We've used Moby Dick twice now for the stingray and snorkel tour - the last time was one week ago - and were impressed both times with the service and overall experience but I doubt you will go wrong with either Moby or Capt M. The cruiseline package is expensive and crowded, but you will get priority on the tenders which is important if your time in GC is short. Good luck! :)

I was looking for something different because I have done the stingray thing.

wildabouttheworld

We are just back from Grand Caymans last week and did the ray reef and rum tour with Native Ways and it was fantastic. It was $62.50 pp adult. There were only 17 in our entire tour. We snorkeled, went to the stingray sand bar, went to a starfish reef, then spent a few hours at Rum Beach ( a little piece of heaven ) where we were served lunch. It was about a 5 hour tour. A nice bus takes you to thier boat. The boat has water and punch and all your snorkel equipment on board. There is a bathroom. Our captain and guide were amazing. They are first class. This was the highlight of our cruise. No pre pay required just a reservation. You can pay on the boat. It was an amazing adventure and I will do it again when we go back. We were next to boats on the stingray sand bar that had dozens of people crammed in like sardines. If I had paid for one of those tours I would have been devestated. Our boat was spacious and we got individual attention. I cant say enough about them.

I agree! I HIGHLY recommend Captain Marvin's! They are awesome and smaller and I feel like you get more attention than the larger group tours.

They deluxe catamaran and stingray excursion was a HIT!...I guess you get one of these tours for $5 less but we had lots of space, great guides, bathroom on board, shade, new snorkel equipment....was worth the money!

we just told them we were coming and paid them when we got there.

it also made it more convenient if the ship didnt make it into that port that day because we didnt have to call or arrange a refund

Grand Cayman Excursions with Celebrity

We generally sail with Disney but have been dabbling in Celebrity the last few years and love it.  Taking a sailing on the Equinox that hits Grand Cayman. Our go-to excursion in GC is generally a catamaran snorkeling trip.  It isn't clear on the Celebrity excursions list for our cruise if any of the snorkel trips are on a Cat.  Can anyone confirm if any of them are and if so, which one(s).  Thank you.

We recently did a snorkel excursion in GC that was NOT on a catamaran, but the trip to the snorkel sites was so short that type of boat really did not matter. This excursion was exactly what it says in the description and we did enjoy it. The second site is the wreck of the Cali. Here is some info on that excursion:

image.png.0cc5f559c18d0538ea71e0e6465f8e66.png

We sailed Equinox to GC this past summer.  We love sailing on catamarans and I do not recall seeing any doing snorkel trips. Most of the water excursions we saw were on big double decker boats.  The waters were very choppy when we were there and we did not enjoy our excursion.

Also interested in this exact excursion. We were planning to book an excursion outside of Celebrity, but with our late docking time of 10am, seems like going with a Celebrity tour might be our best bet.

Grand Cayman is a tender port and Celebrity must use local tender boats.  You might be better off booking the Celebrity excursion.

We've done a bunch of snorkels on GC, but never on our preferred boat, a cat (including next month's, which photos show a motorized snorkel boat). It's not really a "day sail" type of island--maybe due to the currents, etc.?

Following ...same.

If you want a catamaran trip stingray and snorkeling trip we went with Stingray Sailing. It is one of my favourite excursions ever , the private ones are much better than the crowed ship tours.
