Frequently asked questions

There are six cruise ports in Hawaii spread across the four main islands. Depending on the length of your cruise, you will visit one island or all of them!

Almost every Hawaiian cruise will visit Honolulu, the capital city, on the island of Oahu. It’s most famous for Waikiki Beach, the Pearl Harbour National Memorial and it’s incredible surf beaches.

There are two ports on the island of Maui – Kahului Harbor and Lahaina. This island is known for its gorgeous beaches, excellent snorkelling, rugged hiking trails, the Haleakala Crater volcano and the Road to Hana drive.

Port of Hilo and Kailua Kona are the ports on the island of Hawaii, commonly called the Big Island. Shore excursions here will take you to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, coffee plantations and yet more lovely beaches.

Sitting at the far north of Hawaii, Kaua’i is known as the Garden Island. Marvel at the grand canyons, tropical rainforest, white sand beaches, and iconic Napali Coastline.

Yes – it will just take you a while to get there! A number of cruise lines run Transpacific cruises from Australia to Hawaii, including Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Carnival Cruises. These cruises will take at least two weeks and generally sail from Sydney via New Zealand and some South Pacific islands.

Hawaii is part of the United States of America, so the same entry requirements apply here. Citizens of 38 different nations don’t need a visa, but will need to apply for a Visa Waiver through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before they travel to Hawaii. Be sure to check with your relevant government authority before you travel what your requirements for entry are.

Tipping policies vary, but most lines will have a policy of automatically adding a daily gratuity charge to your onboard account. This is usually around USD$15-20 a day. You may also see an automatic service charge added to extras like drinks or spa treatments. There is no expectation for you to tip the crew on top of this. Be aware that when you’re ashore in Hawaii, you will be expected to tip at bars and restaurants – this is usually between 15-25% of the total bill.

Large ships cruising to Hawaii will have multiple restaurants on board, offering a mix of international cuisines and Hawaiian specialties. Most ships will restock during their time in the islands, so will pick up local ingredients like fresh seafood and tropical fruits. As the Pride of America is permanently based in Hawaii, its menu features many Hawaiian dishes like pineapple beurre blanc with fresh seafood and papaya with Asian short ribs. Princess Cruises also tailors its special Aloha Spirit menu to the islands, serving slow roasted luau pork, Kona shrimp, macadamia-infused desserts and Hawaiian cocktails.

Hawaii is a year-round destination and whenever you visit you’ll be charmed by its golden beaches, lush jungle and vibrant culture. The most popular time to visit is the winter season between October and April. You can still expect great weather and minimal rain. Most cruise lines will visit during this period and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America is the only ship sailing here year-round.

Absolutely! There are cruises specifically designed for inter-island exploration in Hawaii. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America ship is based in Hawaii and sails through the islands year-round. The seven-day round-trip itinerary departs from Honolulu and visits four ports across Maui, the Big Island and Kaua’i. Expedition cruisers can also choose an eight-day itinerary visiting smaller and more remote ports.

Expect to spend a lot of time outside on your port stops, swimming at pristine beaches, surfing world-famous waves, snorkelling on coral reefs and hiking through green jungle. On the Big Island, you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, or hike to the summit of the dormant Mauna Kea. Hawaii’s whale watching season runs from November to April, peaking from January to March. You should be able to spot them from the deck of your ship, from the shore on the islands or on a whale watching tour. Learn about Hawaii’s military history at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, where you can walk on a platform above a sunken battleship. You will also get to experience the rich Hawaiian culture with traditional performances, hula dancing, arts and crafts, music and maybe even a luau feast.

The only major adults’ only cruise line that sails to Hawaii is Viking Cruises – you’ll never find any kids on board this line. Expedition vessel Safari Explorer only welcomes children aged over 12 (except during special family-friendly sailings). Many of the other lines that sail to Hawaii have dedicated adults’ only areas on board with special suites, pools, restaurants and bars just for the grown ups.

You sure can – and we think you should. Wherever your cruise finishes, you’re not far from some of Hawaii’s most popular holiday spots or spectacular natural wonders. If you finish in Honolulu, the glitzy resorts of Waikiki Beach are just a few minutes away. It’s also easy to fly between the islands if you want to explore further. Coordinate with your cruise line when you book or ask your Flight Centre travel expert for their recommendations.

Explore the Hawaiian Islands

Four Pacific jewels, as dazzling as they are different.

Hawaiian Islands cruise with more value

Why settle for seeing just one island on a Hawaii resort-based vacation when you can cruise in style and explore multiple island jewels? Sailing with Princess is a far better vacation value, and you’ll visit popular Hawaiian islands —  Oahu ,  Kauai  and the Big Island ( Hilo  and  Kona ) — without all the time-consuming hassle of island hopping by plane. From enriching  Discovery and Animal Planet shore excursions  to our immersive "Aloha Spirit" program onboard, you'll discover each island's unique charm — and fall in love with Hawaii's enchanting beauty.

Oahu (Honolulu)

The most populous of the Hawaiian islands, bustling Oahu  offers attractions for visitors of all ages. Our sailings feature a special late night departure from Oahu, so you can spend a full day seeing the sights, then revel in Honolulu's exciting nightlife. From iconic Waikiki Beach to the enormous Ala Moana Shopping Center to the glorious Iolani Palace and poignant Pearl Harbor memorials, there’s certainly no shortage of things to do in "The Big Pineapple" of Hawaii!

Once the favorite playground of Hawaiian royalty, great warrior King Kamehameha chose to make  Maui's  Lahaina his capital after uniting the Hawaiian islands. Explore breathtaking Haleakala National Park that boasts diverse volcanic and rainforest landscapes, plus a 10,000 foot tall dormant volcano. Or sail out onto the scenic waters off Maui’s sun-kissed shores and witness in awe as humpback whales frolic about.

When it comes to  Kauai , good things come in small packages. Despite being the smallest of the four main islands, Kauai is home to the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" Waimea Canyon, the lush Fern Grotto framed by Wailua River, and so much more. The stunning Na Pali Coast has served as the backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters, such as Jurassic Park and King Kong. With endless emerald landscapes, Kauai truly lives up to its nickname of "The Garden Island".

Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian islands combined, the Big Island ( Hilo and Kona ) is a paradise of black-sand beaches, tropical rainforests, and even snow-capped peaks at the soaring Mauna Kea summit. Feel the spiritual "mana" on a shore excursion in Waipi'o Valley, once the meeting place for Hawaiian kings and fabled to contain an otherworldly gate. At the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, behold extraordinary lava landscapes and two of the world’s most active volcanoes.

Sail Through The Hawaiian Islands

On a Hawaii cruise, you’ll sail to a verdant, otherworldly setting of steaming volcanoes, dense rainforest, tropical blooms, and palm-fringed beaches. You’ll be welcomed by the gentle, friendly Hawaiian people into a world of deep spirituality, expressed through the Aloha spirit.

Sail aboard one of our contemporary ships from Vancouver, British Columbia or Honolulu, Hawaii and bask in the perfect combination of adventures and culture ashore and relaxing days at sea. Embrace local culture with a hula show. Uncover the islands’ complex history, from the royal family to Pearl Harbor. Sample island-grown produce, bathe under waterfalls, and discover the dazzling reefs of the underwater world. Cruises to Hawaii will leave you enchanted, whatever your interests.

Featured Highlights

Dramatic scenery.

You’re constantly aware of the power of nature in Hawaii, where the lush scenery is like something out of another world. Jagged cliffs, beaches of glittering black sand, ribbon-like waterfalls cascading from emerald escarpments, and smoldering volcanoes catch your eye at every turn. You’ll see pounding surf, limpid lagoons, and sometimes a snowy cap on the highest mountains. Explore bamboo forests and plunging gorges. At night, look up at the astonishing array of stars.

Unique Culture

Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you. Beliefs are expressed through beautiful chants, music, graceful hula, and art. Stories relayed from one generation to the next invoke the spirits and the historical events that have shaped the islands. Natural phenomena are understood as the work of gods and goddesses, and many locations and animals are regarded as sacred.

Intriguing Cuisine

Hawaii boasts a unique cuisine, with influences from Polynesia, Japan, and America. Taste fresh tuna poke bowls, sweet pineapple, and juicy strawberry papaya. Try lomi lomi, salted salmon with tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers. Sample local chocolate and enjoy coffee made from Kona beans. Experience everything from delicate sushi and sashimi to moco loco. Look out for spam, a local favorite, served in wontons or as Spam musubi with rice and nori.

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Passenger Disappears Overboard on Trip to Hawaii

The Coast Guard said the cruise ship left Brisbane, Australia, about two weeks ago and was on its way to Hawaii after a stop in Tahiti. It is expected to dock in Honolulu on Friday.

Published April 27, 2023 • Updated on April 27, 2023 at 9:45 am

The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday it was searching for a cruise ship passenger from Australia in waters south of Hawaii.

The ship Quantum of the Seas notified the Coast Guard of a man overboard at 11:03 p.m. Tuesday, about 870 miles south of the island chain. NBC affiliate KHNL reports the ship's crew remained on scene to search for the man for approximately two hours.

A C-130 air crew took off at 7 a.m. the next morning and arrived two hours later at the scene about 500 miles south of the Big Island town of Kailua-Kona. After six hours on site, the air crew returned to Air Station Barbers Point on Oahu to refuel. Coast Guard crews will resume searching Thursday morning.

Disney Cruise Line no longer accepting photocopies of guest birth certificates

Disney cruise line policy change during fleet expansion, added itineraries.

Pilar Arias

Inside Disney's new 'Wish' mega cruise ship

Disney's latest cruise ship features a water ride with twisting tubes and ocean views.

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) is now requiring that guests who use their birth certificate to board provide their original, rather than a photocopy, according to an email sent to guests .

"For round trip sailings departing from the U.S., Guests using a birth certificate as citizenship documentation are reminded that only an original state-issued birth certificate is acceptable," the email shared by Disney Cruise Line Blog reads. "Guests 16 years of age and older are also required to present a physical government-issued photo ID." The email continues, "Children 15 years of age and younger will need to present an original state-issued birth certificate but do not need to present a government-issued photo ID. Photocopies of birth certificates will not be accepted."

The change is for passengers partaking in "closed-loop cruises," which begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel within the Western Hemisphere. They do not require passports.

"For added security we recommend that you carry a valid passport with you," DCL's frequently asked questions page states. "In addition to providing you and your family with approved identification for boarding the ship, having a passport prepares you to travel to any destination should the need arise."

"In the unlikely event that you experience an emergency during your cruise that requires you to fly home from a foreign port, your passport allows you to board the flight without delay," the site explains.

Disney Cruise Line is rapidly expanding and soon expects to launch more routes from international destinations as it continues to target families in the cruise market.

In July, the company announced its ninth ship would set sail from Tokyo by early 2029.

Prior to that, Disney announced it would be setting sail from Singapore next year with the Disney Adventure.
