Christmas Market in Vienna, Austria

Vienna at Christmas Time

The Austrian capital was one of the pioneers of the Christmas market tradition, holding its first event in 1298. Visitors today can enjoy any number of markets, including the Viennese Christmas Market—in front of city hall—and the market at Baroque Schönbrunn Palace, as well as shopping stalls in the historic Spittelberg District.

Jungfrau Mountain, Berne, Switzerland

Christmas Markets in Zurich

With 150 stalls and operated completely indoors, a 50 foot Christmas tree adorned with Swarovski crystals welcomes visitors to Zurich as they arrive at the Main Train Station. With fruit cake, vendors from all over the world, and all kinds of other traditional Christmas cuisine, the air is filled with the scents and sounds of the holidays. Exhibitors compete for the honor of being named the “Most Beautiful Stall” at the market, ensuring that the entire venue is beautifully adorned. The Zurich market is the largest indoor market in Europe, making it the perfect escape for those blustery cold evenings.

Munich Christmas Market at night, Germany

Christmas in Munich

Stalls surround an impressive 85 foot Christmas tree in the German Capital. Here you’ll find children dressed as angels and learning to be the next generation of crafters inside the “Heavenly Workshop” in town hall. Musicians fill the air with festive music every Friday before Christmas as guests hop on the Christmas tram that parades them through the old city as they eat gingerbread cookies and sip hot spiced wine.

Prague Christmas Market at night, Czech Republic

Prague for the Holidays

The abundant Gothic architecture provides a perfect backdrop to the Christmas scene you’ll find in Prague. The two most famous Christmas markets, held at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, are walking distance from each other. Wander among the traditional wooden huts to admire handmade wooden toys and jewelry, Czech marionettes, nativity scenes, and even a petting zoo. Prague also offers numerous culinary delights, including   klobása   (sausage), roasted ham,   Trdelník   (a rolled pastry),   Vosí Hnízda   (beehive cookies), and hot mulled wine

Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

Between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Munich you’ll even travel via parts of the Romantic Road.

Must-dos as you travel include sampling a stein of beer at Hofbräuhaus in Munich, seeing Mozart’s birthplace, visiting the Swarovski crystal factory, taking a cable car trip in Lucerne and sampling authentic, freshly-baked Lebkuchen or stollen at the markets.

Rhine Christmas Markets with Switzerland and Strasbourg

Tour operator: Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Christmas market at Strasbourg

A fact worth knowing when you’re planning to head to Europe is that the best Christmas destinations don’t have to be toured by coach, train or car. You can also take to the water to see Switzerland, France and Germany, and visit Amsterdam. This trip involves travel by lake and river, so there’s no need to worry about stormy waters.

This 12 day tour packs a lot in, yet there’s also time to explore all the destinations at your leisure. Commencing with a walking tour in Zurich, you’ll then travel to Bern and Gstaad before arriving for two nights by the lake in Montreux on the Swiss Riviera.

The tour continues with visits to Basel, one of the biggest Christmas markets in Strasbourg and the German spa town of Baden Baden. Cologne is the last stop before the trip ends in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

  • Tour highlights: Zurich – Lucerne – Montreux – Strasbourg – Baden-Baden – Cologne – Amsterdam

Why book a guided tour of Europe?

Many travellers prefer guided tours for various reasons. Often it’s the most cost and time effective way to see the places you want to visit. The tour operator will take care of travel, hotel bookings and local trips, so you don’t have to.

For first-timers in particular a guided trip can be the simplest option. It’s also perfect for solo travellers who don’t want to go it all alone – and you’re likely to meet new people along the way.

Your tour guide can advise on and look after all sorts of issues or queries that might crop up while you travel. They will generally have good local knowledge, and can help you out whether you want to uncover a city’s secrets or know whether or not to add a tip.

Taking a tour can also help you to budget, as major costs like transport and hotels are already covered. Visiting a number of destinations means you can choose those you’d like to spend more time in on future trips, too!

What to look for when choosing a European Christmas Markets tour

Dresden Christmas market

Here are some things to look for when picking out the right tour for you.

Sightseeing & excursions

What sort of guided walking tours or organised trips to places you want to see are included? Will any extras be payable once you’re there?

Visit vs drive by

Check the wording carefully if you want to spend time at a particular place. Does the tour include a sighting en route without a stop, or several hours or even nights in the destination?

Hotel ratings

What standard of hotel is included? If you’re used to four and five star luxury, then you may not be content with a two star property some way out of town, for example.

Typically a tour might include breakfast every day, but lunch or dinner on selected days only. Check carefully so you can budget accordingly!

Optional extras

If certain activities or attractions are listed – or suggested – on the itinerary, is entry to these included? How about any travel required to get there and back?

Lots of free time means you can explore at will. With a packed itinerary, there may not be time to see or do all you’d like to. How much time you want to spend exploring on your own steam really is a matter of personal preference.

Fast or slow pace

Does the pace of the tour suit you? If long, leisurely lie-ins are a favourite feature of your vacations and holidays, then don’t choose a tour that involves early starts every single day!

What travelers say about their Christmas Market tours

Tips for planning a trip to europe’s christmas markets.

There are so many Christmas markets all around the world! We offer tours to Christmas markets in Amsterdam, Brussels, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and Heidelberg, to name a few.

Here are some of the top markets on our European Christmas Market tours:

  • Maastricht, the Netherlands.  Maastricht, in the  Netherlands , is a charming medieval city with cobblestone streets and fairy tale views. The small huts are filled with holiday gifts, mulled wine, local cheeses, and more.
  • Trier, Germany.  Christmas markets originated in  Germany , making this one even more magical. From local artwork to handmade ornaments, you can find the most unique gifts here—and also some of the best gingerbread cookies around.
  • Brussels, Belgium.  This market, like the city itself, is very large. In addition to the vendors selling food and other goods, there’s a large ferris wheel, ice skating rink, carousel, games, and beer tents.
  • Innsbruck, Austria.  If you’ve ever dreamed of strolling through a  Christmas market in the Alps  with a cup of hot mulled wine, this one’s for you.

There are also Christmas Market tours outside of Europe, too. From New York to Toronto, check out  our 5 favorite Christmas markets not in Europe .

One of the best parts of our tours to Christmas markets is seeing all the souvenirs and gifts our travelers find. From scented ornaments and Advent calendars to cinnamon cookies and handmade nutcrackers, you’re bound to find a gift for everyone on your list. Check out  the best souvenirs you can find on our European Christmas Market tours .

The most important thing to know about European Christmas market vacations is that each one is unique. You could visit ten markets and have a different experience at each one! Read our blog on  what to do at Europe’s different Christmas markets .

Another tip is to be sure to visit at least one market at night. That’s when they’re the most magical! Show up hungry, too, because there are so many delicious foods to try at each market.

Lastly, if you’re wondering what to pack for a Christmas Market tour, bring lots of warm layers to keep toasty as you walk around the outdoor winter wonderland. And of course, our best tip is to leave room in your luggage for all the souvenirs you’ll bring home!

Christmas Market Itinerary

1. Visit The Magical Christmas Markets

The oldest and largest Christmas market in Munich is called Christkindlmarkt, and takes place in the city's main square, Marienplatz. This market has a long history as it has been held in the city every year since the 14th century.

Christkindlmarket is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe; packed with charming Bavarian stalls selling delicious food, with the backdrop of the picturesque neo-Gothic town hall, and a huge Christmas tree in the square.

Christkindlmarkt is open from the last week in November through to Christmas Eve. However, Christkindlmarket isn't the only Christmas market in Munich. In fact, the city is actually home to over 20 Christmas markets.

Other popular Christmas markets in Munich include:

  • Krippler Christmas markets outside St Peters Church
  • The Tollwood Christmas market at Theresienwiese
  • Residenz Christmas Village at Residenz Palance Courtyard
  • Medieval Christmas market at Whittlesbachplatz
  • Square of Stars Christmas market at Rindermarkt
  • Pink Christmas at Stephansplatz

You could join a 2-hour guided tour of the Christmas markets in Munich, in which you'll learn about typical Bavarian Christmas traditions, taste Christmas delicacies, and drink mulled wine. If you've like more information about this tour, click here .

2. Go Ice-Skating at Münchner Eiszauber

Münchner Eiszauber on Karlsplatz is the largest mobile ice arena in the city. The ice rink opens in winter, usually in late November. So grab your skates, or rent them there, and go ice-skating this Christmas in Munich.

In addition to the ice rink, there is also beautiful Christmas lights, delicious food, and parties every night.

3. Travel On The Famous ChristkindlTram

The ChristkindlTram is a tramway, which dates back to 1957. The tram is decorated in Christmas lights and still has its old wooden seats. Whilst on board, you are served gingerbread and mulled wine.

During the festive period, the famous tram travels through the city's historical centre, taking you past all the most important sites. So, it's an excellent way to see the city during Christmas.

You can buy tickets at the ticket office in Sendlinger Tor, where the tram route departs from and ends.

4. Join The Krampus Run

The Krampus is a Christmas monster that dates all the way back to the 16th-century. According to old folklore, he used to capture misbehaving children (and sometimes their parents) and drag them to hell.

A truly frightening character that is very popular in Germany and Austria. Every Christmas, there is a Krampus-themed costume parade and race in Munich. The only stipulation is you need to be dressed as Krampus to take part.

The event takes place this year on Saturday 10th December at Marianplatz. Even if you aren't taking part, I'm sure it would still be entertaining (or terrifying) to see!

5. Try Curling on the Nymphenburg Canal

Nymphenburg palace is a beautiful Baroque palace located 40-minutes from the city centre in Munich's western district, Neuhausen-Nymphenburg.

During winter, the Nymphenburg palace canal can become completely frozen over due to the canal being quite shallow, and the cold temperatures. This makes it the perfect place to play winter sports including ice-hockey, curling, and skating.

Afterwards, the palace grounds are a wonderful place to take a winter stroll.

6. Sample The Local Delicacies At Viktualienmarkt

Located behind St Peter's Church is the Viktualienmarkt food market. This is one of Munich's most famous landmarks, and has more than 100 stalls selling traditional produce.

At Christmas, the food market is decorated in Christmas trees, and there is also Christmas gift stalls, Christmas carols, and typical Christmas food.

It's open from Monday through to Saturday, typically between 8am-8pm. However, just check the opening hours closer to when you visit as the times might change around the festive period.

7. Enjoy A Christmas Concert In The Hercules Hall

Hercules Hall is located only 10-minutes walk from Marianplatz. It was originally the throne room of Ludwig I, and after the building's reconstruction, it was used as a concert hall.

It is one of the most beautiful halls in Munich, and has incredible acoustics. During December, they put on Christmas Concerts featuring classical music and Christmas carols.

You can check the dates for the Christmas Concerts here . If none of these dates suit you, I'm sure you'll be able to find other Christmas concerts around Munich.
