What Songs Does Tom Cruise Sing in Rock of Ages ?

tom cruise singing in movie

In the hair-metal musical Rock of Ages , Tom Cruise plays louche rock icon Stacee Jaxx and sings several songs with the help of a monkey and Auto-tune . But which classics of the genre will Cruise put his voice to? According to the just-released track listing for the soundtrack album , Cruise pulls solo duty on “Paradise City” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” sings duets on “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “I Want to Know What Love Is,” and “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” and contributes additional vocals to “Here I Go Again,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Mary J. Blige is also on the soundtrack, but alas, there are no Whitesnake songs about crispy chicken .

Top songs: a guide to Tom Cruise singing cheesy tunes in movies

Might as well face it, Tom Cruise is addicted to belting out an off-key classic in his films. Here's a quick guide to some of his most memorable – and more forgettable – moments on the mic

tom cruise singing in movie

Photos: Alamy/Collage: The Big Issue

Ace fighter pilot, champion stock car racer, secret agent extraordinaire, barman at TGI Fridays: Tom Cruise has lived exciting lives which we mere mortals can only dream of through his blockbuster acting roles. And yet, from watching the vertically challenged sexy scientologist’s movies over the years, I can’t help but sense that his greatest ambition in life has never been fully realised.

I still haven’t seen Top Gun: Maverick – and I understand he judiciously leaves the theme song to Lady Gaga – but if it doesn’t feature a scene in which Cruise wonkily if gamely sings his little heart out to some sort of vintage rock’n’roll tune then he is selling us all and indeed himself short. The man clearly just wants to sing!

Not content merely packing the soundtracks of his movies with hit songs that can have taken anywhere between three and seven minutes to write – be it Take a Look Around , Limp Bizkit’s butthurt riff on a Lalo Schifrin TV theme classic from 2000’s Mission: Impossible 2 , or Paul McCartney’s fantastically lazy Vanilla Sky from 2001’s film of the same name (sample lyric: “Tonight you fly so high up/In the vanilla sky” ) – Cruise has on many a memorable occasion grabbed the mic himself, only rarely crashing and burning in the process. Shake your nerves and rattle your brain, with a short history of Tom Cruise singing in films.

Great Balls of Fire  – Top Gun (1986)

Whether it’s spectacular aerial dogfights or a very homoerotic beach volleyball match, Cruise’s breakout action classic is full of memorable scenes, including not just one but two where he sings. The best is of course when Mav and Goose and their respective better halves are drunk in a bar, and Goose is banging away at an upright piano with his young son perched on top, and the two BFFs are going ballistic howling Jerry Lee Lewis’s horndog anthem like a right pair of flaming testes. Unbearably wholesome content.

Addicted to Love  – Cocktail (1988)

It’s hard to believe it happened not long after Top Gun , but Cruise’s arguably worst-ever film saw him play a flair bartender at a MOR American chain restaurant, serving up extravagantly made boozes with often sexy results. His credentials as the money-maker shakin’ lothario who can also do you a decent margarita are burnished by a scene in which the erotic mixologist starts ad-libbing to Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love behind the bar while a woman stares at him longingly, whether smitten or perhaps just wondering when the hell she’s getting her drink.

Free Fallin’  – Jerry Maguire (1996)

He’s a cocky American sports agent just been binned from his job, she’s a naive and let’s face it desperate secretary and single mum (played by the future multiple Oscar-winning Renée Zellweger). Their relationship makes no sense whatsoever and is actually quite tragic. But watch this much-overrated romcom anyway for the always enjoyable scene where Jerry’s driving off from doing what he thinks is a career-saving deal, searching the radio for a song to match his ecstatic mood, before finally settling on Tom Petty’s 1989 classic Free Fallin’ . Cue Cruise frantically car singing along at the top of his voice with no-one’s-listening aplomb.

Little Deuce Coupe  – War of the Worlds (2005)

“The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one, but still they come!” OK, so sadly Cruise didn’t have a go at singing Jeff Wayne’s 1978 funky prog-rock opera based on HG Wells’ Victorian era proto-sci-fi frightener. But in playing the unlikely part of the deadbeat dad in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 blockbuster movie adaptation, he does have a pretty sweet moment when, searching his mind in vain for a lullaby to sing his terrified daughter, from somewhere he comes up with The Beach Boys’ 1963 hot-rod rock ode, sung in a fragile reedy voice with tears in his eyes.

Various songs  – Rock of Ages (2012)

Perhaps we should be more careful what we wish for. Back in 2012, Cruise really did get to fulfil many of his obvious rock star fantasies by joining the ensemble cast of a film based on a popular glam-rock Broadway jukebox musical. The actor took lessons with Axl Rose’s vocal coach to get up to scratch for his role as brooding superstar Stacey Jaxx, and ended up singing surprisingly passable lead vocals on various songs including Guns N’ Roses’ Paradise City , Bon Jovi’s Wanted Dead or Alive and Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar on Me . Luckily the film tanked at the box office, and music’s loss remains acting’s gain.

Now streaming on:

"Rock of Ages," a rags-to-riches rock 'n' roll musical set mostly in a music club on Sunset Strip, wins no prizes for originality. A lot of it is zesty entertainment, with some energetic musical numbers; several big names ( Tom Cruise , Russell Brand , Alec Baldwin ) prove they can sing well enough to play the Strip if they lose the day job. The two leads are Diego Boneta , as a bartender in the Strip's hottest club, and Julianne Hough , as a naive kid just off the bus from the Midwest. They're both gifted singers and join the others in doing covers of 1980s rock classics.

Of course they also fall in love. Of course they have heartfelt conversations while standing behind the "Hollywood" sign. Of course they break up because of a tragic misunderstanding. Of course their mistake is repaired and (spoiler!) they're back together at the end. Has ever a romance in a musical been otherwise?

They're sweet and likable, but for me, the better story involves the fate of the club, the Bourbon Room. Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin), its owner, is desperate because he owes back taxes and will have to close the doors at any moment. His only confidante is a weathered rocker named Lonny (Russell Brand), whose primary function is to lean over him during phone calls and frantically tell him what to say. The person on the other end of the line is usually a venal music manager named Paul Gill ( Paul Giamatti ), who claims he will save the club by supplying his legendary client Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) for a one-night farewell concert.

If you're tracking those names, you're perhaps impressed. Adam Shankman's "Rock of Ages" not only has a high-profile cast, but they never seem to be slumming; they play their roles with great intensity and earnestness, which is really the only way to do satire.

A subplot is recycled directly out of old "Beach Party" musicals. If you are of a certain age, you may remember them. Frankie, Annette and the gang were always having a great time down at the beach when some stuffy local politician decided to run them out of town as a campaign tactic. In this case, the politician is Mayor Whitman ( Bryan Cranston ), who gets all of his instructions from his domineering wife, Patricia ( Catherine Zeta-Jones ). She leads a group of protesters across the street from the Bourbon Room, while Dennis and Lonny look grimly out the window.

There isn't an original idea in the screenplay by Justin Theroux and Chris D'Arienzo, based on an Off-Broadway hit. Even the songs are oldies. And that's OK, because the actors are having a lot of fun, and the production values of the musical numbers are slick and high-spirited. The only problem is that the plot meanders when nobody is singing. If you're making the kind of movie where everybody in the audience knows for sure what's going to happen, it's best not to linger on the recycled bits. If Drew misunderstands something he sees and thinks Sherrie was cheating on him with Stacee Jaxx, then let them clear that up without a lugubrious return visit to the Hollywood sign.

In a movie where all the stars except the leads are essentially satirizing themselves, Tom Cruise is the most merciless on himself. Stacee Jaxx, his muscular body a quiltwork of tattoos, travels with a couple of grim bodyguards ( Kevin Nash , of all people, and Jeff Chase , a giant 6'7" bodybuilder). Stacee has such a big ego that when he's interviewed by a Rolling Stone reporter ( Malin Akerman ), he's so narcissistically seductive he almost seduces himself. Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand have a big scene I'll bet neither one saw in his future.

Hough Stuff

R ock of Ages is the best movie based on a jukebox musical based on the idea that a bunch of dreamers inspired by the poetry of Twisted Sister and Whitesnake can change the world. Or if not the world, then certainly the fate of the seedy, soulful, 1987-era Sunset Strip, site of not only the Whiskey a Go Go and Gazzarri’s but also the legendary (and fictional) Bourbon Room. Julianne Hough, 23, plays Sherrie Christian, a former choirgirl from Oklahoma whose peppiness, persistence, and familiarity with the glam-metal songbook lands her a job at the Bourbon. It’s there, at the apex of the club’s financial woes, that Sherrie comes across sexy, slithering rocker Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise), moralizing anti-nightlife crusader Patricia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), and grizzled club owner Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin). Packed with crowd-pleasing hits and lighthearted heavy drinking, Rock of Ages is like a condensed late-80s prom that still manages to include full-size late-80s hair.

Unlike Sherrie, Hough bypassed the Hollywood service-industry circuit. After twice winning Dancing with the Stars (partnered first with speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and second with racecar driver Helio Castroneves), she starred in the 2011 remake of Footloose, another classic of choreography that included rollicking songs from the 80s.

Is there any other movie musical she’d like to see fast-tracked? “Yes, Wicked !” she says. “And I want to be Elphaba”—the Wicked Witch of the West. “I mean, in my mind I’m like, I don’t want to do any musicals for a while, since they’re like the only movies I’ve done, so I’m like, Let’s just wait five years and they’ll have to come out and make that and I will definitely do that!” Now all she has to do is click—or step, strut, spin, or whirl—her heels three times.

Rock of Ages first listen: Can Tom Cruise actually sing?

Critics get a taste of the actor's take on Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" in the upcoming rock musical — and they aren't so sweet on it

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Tom Cruise certainly pulls off the look of the '80s rockers he's fashioned after, but his vocals aren't as on point.

The audio: Tom Cruise is, apparently, "hot sticky sweet." But can he sing? Ever since the Mission: Impossible star was cast in the upcoming musical Rock of Ages , based on the jukebox Broadway show of the same name, critics wondered whether he had the vocal chops to pull off the role. In the film, out June 15, Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx, a bare-chested, chaps-wearing rocker in the mold of Poison's Bret Michaels, who is tasked with belting out rock and roll classics like "Paradise City" and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The first audio clip of the actor singing the Def Leppard track "Pour Some Sugar On Me" was released Tuesday. (Listen to it below.) Cruise claims that the hair band already gave his performance its stamp of approval .

The reaction: Cruise may look the part of the long-haired, tatted-up rocker in the preview images we've seen, says Mary Ouellette at Loudwire , but his vocals are too Broadway. He lacks Def Leppard's "imperfections and reckless abandon," and sounds "more like he's singing a showtune than a rock anthem." What vocals? says Billy Dukes at Ultimate Classic Rock . He's drowned out by the ramped-up background production. While Cruise's version will bring the classic track to a new audience, "it fails to separate itself form the original in any remarkable way." He sounds fine, says Katey Rich at Cinema Blend . Cruise "always seemed like one of those people who can do just about everything well." The true test, though, will be whether he can pull off those crazy '80s dance moves. Listen to Cruise's "Sugar" rendition:

Tom Cruise Is Planning to Sing and Dance in an Original Movie Musical

He is also keen to revive his 'Tropic Thunder' character Les Grossman.

preview for Tom Cruise’s Career From “Risky Business” to “Top Gun: Maverick”

At the top of the list is an "original song and dance-style musical" which they will write as a starring vehicle for Cruise. While audiences might associate Cruise primarily with dramatic action roles, he has sang on-screen before. And no, that's not a reference to the terrible lullaby scene from the middling War of the Worlds remake. He was critically lauded for his pipes in the 2012 adaptation of the Broadway show Rock of Ages , in which he played a washed-up musician and performed impressive renditions of some hair rock anthems, including "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard and "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi.

No plot details have been announced about this new musical, although given Cruise's propensity for throwing himself into life-threatening stuntwork, it's likely he will train like a professional tap-dancer to get the moves right.

And speaking of stunts, another one of Cruise and McQuarrie's pending projects is the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, which will see Cruise "speed flying." They're also keen to create a brand new action franchise together. Most bafflingly though, they are reportedly excited about the prospect of bringing back Les Grossman, Cruise's scene-stealing character from the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder .

Sublime stunts and Tom Cruise's coins: 10 EPIC facts about Mission: Impossible

Posted: May 1, 2024 | Last updated: May 1, 2024

"Mission accomplished!" After its release in 1996, ‘Mission: Impossible’ was quickly seen as a cinematic marvel and went on to spawn one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. Audiences immediately fell in love with Tom Cruise's charming yet deadly spy Ethan Hunt, and the flick contained some of the most jaw-dropping stunts ever put to screen at the time. So, let’s look back at what made ‘Mission: Impossible’ so special.

The original Mission: Impossible!

The ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise exists mostly due to Tom Cruise. After founding his production company Cruise/Wagner Productions in 1992, the actor took inspiration from his childhood to bring the spy series to the big screen. As a youngster, the actor absolutely loved the original ‘Mission: Impossible’ TV show - which ran from 1966 to 1973 before it was briefly revived in the 80s - and was determined to adapt it for the silver screen. Tom approached Paramount Pictures, who owned the rights to the series, to see if they would be willing to make a ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie, and eventually emerged from the negotiations with a $70 million budget to make the film.

All thanks to Tom Cruise

While you’d think actors would jump at the chance on appearing in a ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie, many weren’t too happy with what Tom Cruise and his team were suggesting, particularly with regards to the story. Peter Graves - who played Jim Phelps in the TV show - was unhappy that all of the characters but his own were renamed for the film, and left the project, allowing Jon Voight to take his place. Martin Landau (who played Rollin Hand) turned down the flick after finding out the original TV team were only going to have glorified cameos before they were all unceremoniously killed off. He recalled: "They wanted the entire team to be destroyed, done away with one at a time, and I was against that."

Casting troubles

Considering both have strong personalities, it won’t come as a surprise to hear that Tom Cruise and director Brian De Palma didn’t get on very well. The pair reportedly clashed over and over again throughout production and rumours of the feud were only strengthened after the filmmaker pulled out of all interviews in the lead-up to the movie’s release. De Palma hasn't returned to the franchise since and confessed that he had no interest in making a sequel. He said: "After I made ‘Mission: Impossible,’ Tom asked me to start working on the next one. I said, ‘Are you kidding?’ One of these is enough. Why would anybody want to make another one?"

Axed love triangle

Ving Rhames’ trusty hacker Luther Stickell has gone on to become a mainstay in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise but that wasn’t always going be the case. In earlier drafts, the character was killed off within the first 15 minutes alongside the rest of Ethan Hunt’s crew. Ving recalled: "I remember saying to [Brian De Palma], ‘Look, why is it that the [black] man dies 15 pages into the [script]?’ I said that kind of jokingly, but it was the truth in many films." The filmmaker rewrote the scene and Luther continues to be a presence in the franchise today.

Ving's near-miss

Product placement is almost everywhere in Hollywood movies and it’s no different when it comes to ‘Mission: Impossible’. After reporting a quarterly loss of $740 million, Apple was determined to increase its revenue stream and overturn its losses and paid Paramount $15 million for Apple computers to be used in the film as a result. The PowerBook 5300c laptop is shown off several times throughout the flick even though it wasn’t even functional at the time the movie was shot.

Apple promotion

What more can be said about this instant action classic? Initially, ’Mission: Impossible’ was a TV show from the ‘60s, and many people believed that the 1996 movie wouldn’t fare particularly well - how wrong they were! Not only did the movie revive the action genre that had been beginning to flag, but it went on to generate a franchise that became a cinematic staple.

Clever coins

One of the most dangerous stunts in the entire series is when Ethan Hunt barely escapes from a restaurant’s fish tank tsunami. There was a real chance that Cruise could get seriously injured or even drown after the glass wall was detonated and 16 tons of water suddenly came gushing towards him. Brian De Palma wanted to used a trained professional for the stunt and simply edit the actor’s face onto their body. However, after finding that the effect wouldn’t look convincing, the director relented and told Tom that he would have to perform the risky scene himself. This then set the precedent of the actor doing all of his own stunts in the following films.

Water stunt

The water stunt wasn’t the only sequence that Tom Cruise went the extra mile for! For the climactic ending on top of a bullet train, the actor wanted to make sure the scene looked convincing and went out of his way to get the most powerful wind machine he could get his hands on. Eventually, Tom found one made in Europe that could produce 140-mile-per-hour gusts and so brought it to production. As a result, Ethan Hunt’s distorted face in the train sequence is very real!

Train stunt

Once it hit cinemas in 1996, ‘Mission: Impossible’ became an instant success. Soon after its release, the movie earned an astounding $45.4 million - smashing the record previously held by ‘Twister’ for having the biggest May opening weekend. By the time it left cinemas, the flick had raked in $457.7 million.

Tom Cruise pictured partying during daughter Suri Cruise's 18th birthday weekend

The mission impossible star shares suri with ex-wife katie holmes.

Hanna Fillingham

Tom Cruise is a father-of-three and on April 18th, his youngest daughter  Suri Cruise turned 18.

The Mission Impossible star shares Suri with his ex-wife, Katie Holmes , and the birthday girl was pictured looking happy as she walked around New York City with a friend, while clutching onto a birthday present.

Suri is thought to have celebrated more over the weekend with her mom, while Tom was pictured in London at another milestone birthday party.

Tom was one of the many celebrity guests at Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday , which was held at Oswald's.

Other well-known faces in attendance included Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek and Marc Anthony. The Spice Girls also reunited, with Emma Bunton, Geri Horner, Mel B and Mel C posing with the birthday girl.

Tom was all smiles in a number of photos posted on the night, looking smart in a tuxedo. As well as Suri, Tom is also father to adopted grown-up children, Isabella 'Bella', 31, and Connor, 29, who he shares with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

None of Tom's children have spoken out about their relationship with their dad in recent years and the actor is incredibly private when it comes to his personal life.

When Suri was younger, however, she was in the public eye a lot more. She was born in Los Angeles where she was raised for the first few years of her life, before her parents' separation in 2012. She then relocated with her mom Katie to New York City.

Katie has raised Suri to be incredibly down-to-earth and the pair have a close relationship. It's clear that Suri has developed her parents' talents for performing, and showcased her incredible singing voice back in 2022.

Suri was heard singing the opening credits of Katie's film, Alone Together, when she was just 15. She sang a pitch-perfect rendition of Blue Moon, and her mom was more than proud.

Chatting to Yahoo! Entertainment about her daughter's role in the movie, she said: "She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it and I let her do her thing. "That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want - go do your thing'."

The mom-of-one was asked why she chose Suri for the job and she said: "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her."

In 2022, Katie gave another rare snippet into her relationship with Suri, telling InStyle: "I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 per cent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it."

Tom Cruise produced a movie in Eugene during the summer of 1996 about Steve Prefontaine

tom cruise singing in movie

In 1996 a film crew descended on Eugene to make a movie about Steve Prefontaine.

The film followed the relationship between record-breaking distance runner Steve Prefontaine and his coach Bill Bowerman.

Prefontaine was a star athlete from Coos Bay who ran for the University of Oregon and later competed in the Olympics in the 1970s.

He died in an automobile accident in Eugene on May 30, 1975, at the age of 24.

The film was written and directed by Robert Towne and produced by Tom Cruise.

Hundreds of locals appear as extras in the film at locations around Oregon, Lane Community College and Hayward Field.

The $25 million movie was released and distributed by Warner Bros. in 1998.

Cruise himself visited Eugene in 1998 for a screening of the film at the McDonald Theater.

The movie was well-received by critics but ended up grossing only $777,000 at the box office.

The actor was pictured filming scenes for the eighth 'Mission: Impossible' movie in the British capital on April 28

Tom Cruise has taken over the streets of London!

On Sunday, April 28, the actor, 61, was photographed filming scenes for the next Mission: Impossible movie in the British capital outside an invented Tube station called 'Trafalgar Square.'

Cruise shut down the real Trafalgar Square for the shoot as he was seen coming in and out of the London Underground station while surrounded by crowds of extras.

Off camera, the action star appeared in happier spirits as he chatted to members of the crew in between takes.

The eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise is set for a May 23, 2025 release. According to Deadline , the release was delayed by a year due to the SAG-AFTRA strike , which ended in November 2023.

Cruise returns to the franchise as protagonist Ethan Hunt, along with director and longtime collaborative partner Christopher McQuarrie.

The actor was spotted filming more adrenaline-fueled scenes for the action movie in London last month.

On March 24, the American Made star was photographed sprinting down a street in the capital wearing a black suit with an unbuttoned white shirt covered in fake blood.

Last summer, Cruise returned to the big screen in the seventh film in the franchise, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning .

The film made $172 million at the domestic box office and earned the franchise its first Oscars nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the 96th Academy Awards earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Cruise is reportedly set to appear in another sequel of his movies for the third Top Gun film , following the huge success of the second installment, Top Gun: Maverick , released in 2022.

In January, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Paramount is developing the sequel with co-writer Ehren Kruger, with Joe Kosinski set to direct. According to the outlet, the film will see Cruise return in his role as Pete Mitchell, alongside his Maverick costars Glen Powell and Miles Teller .

Tom Cruise Doesn't Really Do Sequels Very Often, But There's Apparently One Movie His Co-Star Was Shocked Didn't Get A Follow-up

"He did bite me at the end..."

Unless we are talking about Mission: Impossible – M:I 8 is currently filming or the long-delayed Top Gun : Maverick – Tom Cruise isn’t known for making very many sequels to his flicks. But, according to one former cast member, there is one film in his oeuvre that he is shocked never got a follow-up. The former cast member in question is Christian Slater , who co-starred along with Cruise and Brad Pitt in one of the best films of the 90s , the film adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel Interview With The Vampire . According to the Heathers alum, he’s shocked that he and the Risky Business star never got a second bite at the neck, playing a vampire in a sequel.

Tom Cruise looks up as Lestat in Interview with the Vampire.

Christian Slater Reflects on The Missed Sequel Opportunity

It's hard to believe it's been nearly three decades–the movie turns 30 this year–since we were first mesmerized by one of the most iconic vampire performances on screen. In an interview shared on Comicbook.com’s Chris Killian’s Instagram , Christian Slater discussed how he and Cruise were reflecting on the project. The pair expressed a mutual astonishment over the movie's lack of a sequel despite their roles becoming fan favorites. He recounted:

Tom Cruise and I were both surprised that Interview With The Vampire didn’t get a sequel. You know, that would have been fun. Uh, I mean, he did bite me at the end of that thing.

For my money, even three decades since its release, Interview With The Vampire is still one of the best vampire movies ever committed to celluloid. Upon release, it was a critical and financial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror films of 1994, and grew to become a goth cult favorite. Not to mention, it introduced the broader world to actress Kirsten Dunst , a role Cruise helped the young actress secure thanks to some very practical advice.

The Enduring Legacy of 'Interview With the Vampire'

Tom Cruise's electrifying turn as the vampire Lestat was central to the film’s success. Initially, Anne Rice, the source material's author, hated Cruise’s casting in the role. However, his performance won her over and helped cement the film's place in cinematic history. Despite this success and the buzz around it, plans to continue Lestat's story with Cruise in a sequel never came to fruition. While the potential for a direct follow-up to this beloved film sparked plenty of discussions, ultimately, those plans remained just out of reach, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.

There was anticipation over a sequel starring the Top Gun A-lister, yet various factors, including rights issues, changes in production companies, and creative decisions, led to a different path for the book to screen adaptations of Rice's novels.

The next film in the series, Queen of the Damned, starring the late singer and actress Aaliyah , was released in 2002, but it did not involve Tom Cruise. Instead, Stuart Townsend took over the role of Lestat. The film combined elements from the second and third books of Rice's series, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned . Still, it diverged significantly from the source material and did not continue directly from where Interview left off.

Interview With The Vampire is enjoying a second adaptation and return to screens as a television series, which is gearing up for its second season on AMC .

The Possibility Of A Sequel With Cruise

The ending of Interview with the Vampire set the stage perfectly for a sequel. It left audiences reeling from its final twist and introduced a new narrative thread with Daniel, the San Francisco reporter who becomes enthralled with Louis's tale of the undead. As Christian Slater hinted in the recent interview, the setup was ideal for a follow-up. Yet, despite the ripe storytelling potential, a direct continuation wasn't in the cards. Could a sequel with Cruise still happen? As the interviewers and Slater point out, Tom Cruise barely looks like he's aged since the last time he put on the Vampire Lestat's fangs. So, never say never.

Christian Slater's most recent work, another book adaptation, the series The Spiderwick Chronicles , is available now for free on The Roku Channel . Be sure to check out our 2024 movie schedule to see what upcoming horror movies are heading to a screen near you.

The next season of Bridgerton is just around the corner — Polin (Penelope and Colin!) fans, this one’s for you! Jennifer Lopez has a sci-fi movie out, and the director of Napoleon Dynamite teams up with the showrunner of UniKitty! for an animated movie about a unicorn who’s not really a unicorn. From the back catalog, we have Shrek and a collection of 1984 movies.

Editor’s pick: The Edge of Seventeen

Nadine (Steinfeld) does the human version of the shrugging kaomoji.

Director: Kelly Fremon Craig Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick

Anyone who was an awkward, self-proclaimed “unlikable” teenage girl will be completely and thoroughly read by The Edge of Seventeen . Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, a prickly teen girl coping with her father’s death. After her best friend starts dating Nadine’s brother, Nadine finds herself even more alone in the world, with only her surly English teacher (Woody Harrelson) to turn to. Nadine somehow keeps messing up over and over, but eventually has to confront her own mistakes and flaws. It’s charmingly funny, but also full of raw emotion, with wonderful performances from Steinfeld and Harrelson.
