Princess is known for having beautiful and elegant ship designs. The “sea witch” Princess logo is one of the most recognizable and iconic, since it was seen in the original “The Love Boat” tv shows which premiered in 1977. The hull design on Princess ships is a now a striking blue and white depiction of the logo.

On most Princess cruise ships, you’ll find a grand atrium, the Piazza, which is the central hub of the cruise ship.The Piazza is a gathering place where passengers can eat at the International Cafe shop, sit in a bar with new friends, shop in the boutiques or relax while listening to live music.

When it comes to activities onboard a Princess cruise, there are dance classes, art auctions, basketball courts, pools and hot tubs. Throughout the day, there is music by the pools and on sea days there are poolside activities.

A unique experience that Princess offers is Movies Under the Stars, and outdoor movie experience.

Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

Expect lots of the cruise to revolve around the pool, dining, and generally having a good time with onboard entertainment.

Still, there are major differences between Princess and other lines that do set it apart. And while the experience overall might feel familiar, these differences could make it the ideal cruise line for you.

Princess Is More Adult-Oriented

First and foremost, if you’re used to sailing mass-market cruise lines like Carnival or Royal Caribbean then the first thing you’ll notice aboard Princess is that there is less focus on children and families

That’s not to say families or kids aren’t welcomed on the ship. In fact, it’s the opposite as Princess has a kids area that can provide supervision while parents go to enjoy the ship. But as opposed to other lines that offer lots of programming and activities geared toward children, that’s not the case on Princess. In fact, we’ve heard other passengers during a trip on Princess mention specifically how they enjoyed having fewer kids on the ship.

Instead, the focus is definitely more on adult vacationers.

Less Focus on “Active” Activities on the Ship

In line with more of an adult focus, another difference with Princess is there is less focus on activities on the ship. Specifically, we’re talking about built-in entertainment options common on many lines like go-kart tracks, roller coasters, rock climbing walls, waterslides, and more.

That’s not to say there isn’t plenty to do. There are a lot of options for entertainment that’s put on by the staff, just as with other cruise lines. But as mentioned, Princess doesn’t focus as much on families, meaning there are fewer options for the sort of active things that have become commonplace on other cruise lines. So if you (or your kids) are expecting to see a pool deck with tons of active things to do like a ropes course or bumper cars, that’s not the case.

This also extends to other areas as well. For example, during our cruise the ship didn’t have an arcade, another staple common on many ships.

More Relaxing Atmosphere & Less Party Vibe

Are you the sort of person that likes to relax on a cruise? If so, then Princess might be right up your alley. In general the atmosphere on the ship is considerably calmer and relaxing than what you find with other lines.

For instance, if you are out by the pool deck, you aren’t going to hear music blaring or have “World’s Sexiest Man” competitions. And around the ship there are fewer announcements from the Cruise Director interrupting the day to tell you about sales on the ship or shows coming up that day. Meanwhile, your other passengers are also less likely to be less looking for a party.

That’s not to say it’s boring or quiet. There’s still that “vacation energy” around the ship where everyone is in a good mood and enjoying themselves. And there’s lots of things to do put on by the staff including stage shows, trivia, karaoke, comedy, and more.

Medallions Instead of Key Cards

One of the first things you’ll notice is that Princess — unlike other cruise lines — doesn’t use a keycard. Instead, Princess uses what it calls the Medallion.

If you’ve cruised before, the Medallion works similarly to the keycard, with some important differences. First, the Medallion uses RF technology, similar to what you see with a credit card that has “tap to pay” service. So when you need to use the card, you simply touch it to one of the readers, like when you are boarding or debarking the ship.

But the wearable item can also be used to unlock your cabin door automatically as you approach. And perhaps the biggest difference is that it can track your location around the ship. So if you step up to the bar, your account information is already pulled up and your identity is confirmed with a photograph. You can also see where your cabin mates are on the ship through the Princess app based on the location of their Medallion.

Cheaper Drinks on the Ship

While we would classify Princess as a more upscale cruise line, that doesn’t mean you have to pay a lot more to sail. In fact, we found 7-day round trip cruises starting at about $400 per person (before taxes and fees).

But even once you’re on the ship you may be surprised by some prices. In particular, we noticed that drinks on the ship seem considerably less expensive than other cruise lines. One of our favorites — mojitos — were priced at just $7.50 on a recent Princess cruise while they are often $10-12 on other lines. In fact, across the board beverages seemed to be less expensive than what you might find elsewhere.

Princess Plus & Princess Premier Packages

While some cruise lines are moving toward more all-inclusive offers like NCL’s “Free at Sea” or Celebrity’s “All Included” that offers extras included in your fare, the norm is still for you to pay your cruise fare and then anything else costs more on the ship.

Princess offers two packages that make the cruise more all-inclusive. This includes Princess Plus and Princess Premier . Depending on which you choose (or you can just book the base fare), you have things like gratuities, wi-fi, and drink package included, along with other perks like specialty dining, and reserved theater seating.

The rates offered for these packages are considerably less than the cost of booking them individually and give passengers a chance to enjoy their cruise without worrying about being nickeled and dimed.

Global Focus on Cruising

Some cruise lines focus heavily on a region such as Europe, North America, or the Caribbean. Princess is truly global in nature.

You can sail from ports in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. There are classic Caribbean trips, Alaska cruises, Mediterranean cruises, and even cruises to Antarctica.

Then there are cruises that last as little as two days all the way to stunning 111-day world cruises (with 50 ports of call) that literally circles the planet.

So no matter what sort of cruise you’re wanting to take, it’s likely that Princess has something that will appeal.

Best Pizza at Sea?

It may seem silly to point out pizza as a way that Princess is different from other cruise lines, but if you think that, it may be because you’ve never eaten the pie on the cruise line.

We’ll be honest, just about every cruise line offers grab and go pizza. And on many lines, it’s just not that good. Princess is completely different.

For one, you have a couple of options. If you just want a slice, you can grab one from the spot near the pool (our favorite). They are large, foldable slices that are unbelievably good and best of all, they are included with your fare.

If you want something a little fancier, there is Gigi’s or Alfredo’s Pizzeria — another included spot that’s a sit-down restaurant and serves up freshly-made pizzas, pasta, and calzones.

A Less Crowded Feel on the Ship

We don’t claim to have sailed every Princess cruise and maybe some ships are different from others. But when we have sailed, one thing we noticed is that the cruise had a less crowded feel. Maybe it’s the actual number of people on the ship, or maybe it’s the layout and design. No matter, the amount of elbow room was definitely noticeable.

To us, it made the cruise much more enjoyable. There was always space by the pool, in the restaurants, and for shows (if you got there just a few minutes early). As well, elevators were relatively quick and weren’t always packed like what’s seen on other ships.

Princess Compared to Other Cruise Lines

The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a cruise experience that’s higher-end than many other lines (without being “stuffy), then Princess is ideal. It offers a more upscale experience that’s focused on adults, with a surprisingly affordable price tag.

This isn’t a wild, party cruise. It’s more of a place to relax and pamper yourself a bit. But it’s also not a bore if you’re someone that likes to have things to do. Our takeaway is that many cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival are similar to theme parks at sea. Princess seems more like “date night” on the ocean.

Royal Caribbean vs Princess Cruises

I was looking at a Panama Canal cruise full transit, however my husband vacation timeline makes it impossible. I saw the partial transit with Princess Cruises and also Holland America and they both fit his vacation time. After reading the reviews I was leaning towards Princess Cruises. We have cruised with Royal Caribbean a couple of times and my husband is worried that I am settling for a cruise rather than waiting for a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line another time.

For me I'd be happy with any cruise, any time, any place...on the other hand he is a little bit more picky. So I guess my question is, how does Coral Princess compare to Independence of the Sea as far as entertainment, staterooms, balcony or jr suite, food, lounges, cleanliness, etc...

After the year we have had, I don't want him to settle

The Coral was purpose built to go thru the Canal. It is a long narrow ship. They have 2 show lounges and if you miss the show the first time you can often see it later in the smaller room.

Princess also offers On board credits to veterans.

If you are Diamond or above on RC you will recieve various perks. Cabins depend on the catagorey you choose. Princess cabins tend to be a bit smaller.

Personally, I prefer the Princess to RC.

If you have not yet sailed Princess consider sailing them.

It's good to try other cruise lines so if the itinerary works for you I would do it.

I do prefer a full transit over the canal over a partial one though.

Sorry that you've had a bad year. Your husband will enjoy the Panama Canal, I know mine did!

We just did the full transit on the Island Princess and it was wonderful! If you can give yourself 4 extra days, the full transit is such a great trip.

The Island and Coral are sister ships and have an excellent crew. They are small and friendly, very easy to navigate. The Horizon Court is in the forward section, so breakfast or lunch is accompanied by a spectacular panoramic view.

Coral has been refurbished recently to include an International Cafe, so she has that slight advantage. I guess Island will get the same treatment at her next dry dock.

OP says they have sailed RCI "a couple of times", making them Gold C&A members at best. Very few perks at that level, IMO.

Have not cruised the Panama Canal but have sailed on both Princess and RCI. We enjoyed each line for various reasons. :) I would look at itinerary, cost, flying to the port of departure, etc. and then decide. I'm sure a cruise would be wonderful for you - sounds like you need it. Bless you both. :)

I would also recommend reading the reviews on each board, using the "Search this forum" function on the right hand side. On the RCI board, type in Independence, and on the Princess board type in Coral, and you will pull up threads in which people have reviewed each ship.

Thanks for the replies however they do not answer my questions which is my fault for not explaining myself better.

My husband has to pick his vacations almost a year in advance, which he did before I decided I wanted to go on a cruise. Since we are locked into the time slot we are limited as what cruises are available.

His concerns are that I am settling for a cruise that fits in his timeline vs planning one for next year. Since we have only cruised on RCCL he is questioning how Princess compares. Lounges, casino, balcony cabin sizes, & anything else...

I'd suggest that you read through the reviews of the Coral, and the various threads on the Princess boards. There are a lot of Princess lovers on these boards - while they may not be able to do a one-on-one comparison (although some can!), they will all be honest about what Princess has to offer.

Those 2 ships are not comparable, at least not in terms of ship, entertainment or lounges. But to be fair, I don't think any ship currently transiting the Panama Canal can be compared to a ship like Independence. We're talking 2 completely different ship classes, sizes, etc.

That said, I would book Princess in a heartbeat. If you are booking based on itinerary, I don't think you would be settling at all by booking the Coral.

I did the partial on Princess and loved it. The cruise isn't as long and you don't have the one way airfare home at the end.

I love both cruiselines. RCCL is a little more glamorous with decor, and a little younger demographic.

Princess ships are beautiful, the food, I think, a little better, the shows maybe not quite as exciting.

I don't think you'd regret doing Princess, I know I wouldn't.

Coral Princess is a very long narrow ship especially designed to go through the Panama Canal. It's also a very nice ship that never feels crowded. :)

My mother and I sailed Princess in 2012. It was unbelievable. The crowd was more mature than other cruise lines but it was still a great cruise. We did the partial transit (Panama) but loved every minute of it. One thing if you are party animal and like the night life....remember I said it was a mature crowd and things seemed to shut down early to me. Loved the ship, big enough to not be crowded but small enough to learn you way around it.

Have sailed both lines and both are good and very comparable. Reading member reviews as mentioned is a good way to see what both are like.

I LOVED the Panama Canal full transit on Island Princess and would do it again.

I am glad I tried various cruiselines to see them for myself. For me cruising just one line would be boring!

Why don't you get in touch with a local travel agent who specializes in cruises. Ours does, and she is a wealth of information as she has travelled on all the lines and knows the product. :)

I haven't had much luck with local TAs. They try to become my best friend and smile while they avoid answering questions. That is why I came to the boards to acquire information.

I can only tell you about Princess, having never sailed RCCL. I've sailed on both the Coral in Alaska and the Caribbean in the Caribbean, and both were kept beautifully clean. Food in the MDR was pretty good; we never felt the need to go specialty. The pastry chefs were excellent!

On the Caribbean, the piano bar was one of the most popular venues, always packed.

On the Coral, the balcony was large enough for two to sit comfortably with a cup of coffee or a bottle of wine. Small table out there, too. On the Caribbean, three of us could sit out there together.

I think you can rest assured that Princess will meet your needs.

To the OP, I have not been on that particular Princess ship, we did HAL for our partial transit as I did not like the idea of a port in Columbia.

However, I can say this, even in RCI ships there is a big difference. I really like the radiance class of RCI ships, which are much smaller than you mentioned. I have not taken a Freedom class but I did one voyager class and I found the ship was just plain too big and tended to get congested at the RP in the evening and at the pools on sea days.

The grand class of Princess I have done and I also was on the old Pacific Princess, that ship (600 PAX) is no longer around. I know nothing about the Coral Princess from experience to that class of ship, but I think I would have enjoyed her for less people. As I said, I just did not like the idea of the port in Columbia which is why we chose HAL.

The Grand class would equal voyager class size wise. On the Caribbean Princess, it also got congested in the atruim area, but the pool areas are done better and the Grand class has one more pool than the RCI voyager class. However, maybe that was fixed on the Freedom class, as the ships are much larger.

I really do think though since I am not into all the bells and whistles, (putt-putt, rock climbing, ocean wave thingie, ice skating show,etc ) that I would enjoy a cruise on the Coral princess better than the RCI ship you mentioned, and the grand class of Princess ships, as I like smaller ships with less PAX. Princess does have shows and piano bars, and usually other lounges with entertainment/bands/dancing,etc. Even that 600 PAX ship of Princess had those things. As others have said, Princess's food is better than RCI overall.

We've sailed the Island and Coral Princess on full canal transits, and have done a couple of RCI cruises, though not on the Independence of the seas.

As to your questions, we love Princess and have sailed them more than any other line. The canal crossings were wonderful, but I'm sure the partial transits were too. We also really liked our RCI cruise.

As to cabins, we found the Royal Caribbean regular balcony cabins to be slightly bigger, with a sofa and a better shower. Princess has a nice closet area, though, but only a chair and not a sofa. Both lines have always been clean and well-kept, to us.

We really don't use the lounges, but there are plenty of options on both lines. Food is subjective, but I'd give the edge to Princess there.

RCI will generally have a younger crowd, especially for longer voyages. They also have more varied entertainment options. If climbing walls, ice skating, flow riders, etc., are important to you, Royal Caribbean will be better. Princess is definitely not as active, although we've always found plenty to do.

Princess generally has a more mature crowd, especially on longer voyages--which holds true for many ships. It probably is more refined and less of a party atmosphere, though our Royal Caribbean cruises weren't party cruises either.

Personally, I'd always go for the longer cruise!

We sailed on a Princess Cruise ship in the past. It had more impolite and rude cruise staff (assistant cruise director, two bar tenders, and a lounge waiter) than any cruise I had been on.

They were ingrained in the process of like our procedures or don't cruise with us. Maybe this was an issue with just some of the staff on the ship we were on, but I have never had any trouble with staff on RCI, Celebrity or NCL.

While we have enjoyed all of our cruises, having staff call you illiterate, ignoring you and your party by bypassing you without ever waiting on you, and ignoring you while you were trying to obtain drinks and were next in line to be served is poor performance.

We have not sailed with Princess since.

However , our Radiance of the Sea cruise in 2006 made a bad impression on us. Btx the condition of the ship, wait staff indifference, lack of hand sanitizing & the captain's silliness, we haven't been too interested in sailing on RCCL. We are going to try them again (Oasis Jan '14) & hope we were wrong the first time. So I don't blame Scubacruiser54 for not wanting to chance a repeat performance of lack of service, etc on a cruise vacation.

And BTW along with the topic of this thread we sailed the Coral Princess on a partial transit. We had a good time. I will say that the entertainment is better on RCCL.

My entire family has cruised extensively on Princess. Both my daughter and my sister have tried RCCL and both said that they prefer Princess. RCCL may have great ships with lots of bells and whistles, but Princess seems to provide the outstanding attention to customer service that RCCL lacks. We did the PAnama Canal on the Coral and it was fantastic! Best wishes!

Well I loved Jewel of the Sea but disliked Mariner of the Seas-both RCI ships. I also did not care for HAL Stadendam and it took me another 7 years to try HAL again on the Westerdam.. I really liked her which changed my opinion of HAL.

I also took 2 cruises twice on the same ship. I cruised RCI Sovereign of the Seas twice. I cruised Celebrity Constellation twice also. On RCI SOS, the first was a 4 day and the second was a 3 day. I found the atmosphere between a 4 day going over weekdays and a 3 day over a weekend attracted an entirely different group of PAX and I found I did not like the 3 day party hardy type atmosphere; I preferred the 4 day family group atmosphere.

The Constellation we had a similar experience, the first cruise was a 12 day transatlantic with a very sedate laid back atmosphere among the PAX. The second was a 4 day and again as it fell over a weekend Thursday to Monday, again we had the party hardy atmosphere. I thought because it was 4 day we would not have that,lol!

Anyway my point is you cannot make your opinion of a line based on one cruise. Even on the same ship you can have very different experiences.

I have sailed on 4 Royal Caribbean cruises, then tried Princess. We are going on Royal Caribbean again leaving in 11 days. We enjoyed all of our cruises, but strongly prefer Royal Caribbean. I though Princess had the best main dining room food of any of the cruise lines I've been on. On the flip side they had the worst buffet. I've been on NCL, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Carnival. IMO Royal Caribbean and Celebrity has the best buffets.
