15 Insanely Creative DIY Travel Projects and Gifts to Make Right Now

  • life at home / Travel Gear

How is your sanity these days? Jacob is going crazy with cabin fever. Me, however? I feel right at home (pun intended) with my puzzles, painting, and crafts. Today, we’re sharing our favorite DIY travel projects we’ve made and plan to make during our quarantine.

As you already know, no one can travel right now, so it’s the perfect time to get crafty for your future trips.

1. DIY Taco Cord

We had first seen a version of them sold at a store and thought how cute would they be if they looked like actual tacos. You may have seen similar ones around the web, but we were super proud that we were the first ones to be crafty enough to come up with this alternative. ;)

Materials You Need: Gold Leather (3.5 x 9.5 to make 3), Acrylic Felt (Green, Yellow, Brown, Red),  Snap Buttons + Attacher Kit , Fabric Scissors , Hot Glue Gun , Hammer , X-acto Knife , Pen

Instructions: How to Make the Cutest DIY Cord Tacos for Your Next Flight

2. Flat Iron or Curling Iron Holder

This is by far the easiest and cheapest tutorial. You can head to the nearest dollar store and pick up a potholder.

Materials You Need: Potholder, Needle and Thread

Instructions: Fold the potholder in half and sew the bottom and the sides. As a bonus, you can also decorate it as you like.

Pro Tip: Acrylic paint works as a great alternative to fabric paint. You can use a fabric medium to thin it out, but it worked perfectly fine on its own.

3. Travel Watercolor Set

Lately, I’ve been using youtube tutorials to teach myself how to watercolor. I’ve only been painting at home, but eventually, when we visit beautiful landscapes I would love to sit and paint. It’ll be a great way to be more present.

Materials You Need: Altoids Tin (the classic one), InstaMorph , Watercolors (this is a great beginner’s set I use)

Pro Tip:   This water brush pen pairs great with this DIY since you don’t have to carry a cup of water with you.

4. DIY Kindle Case or DIY iPad Case

This tutorial was for an iPad cover, but you can also measure your device and modify the tutorial as needed.

Materials You Need: Heavy Chipboard , Fabric (this one is travel inspired), One inch Elastic , Sewing Machine (or you can hand sew)

I also found these amazing handmade book covers on Etsy , and there’s a high chance I’m going to buy one.

I’m trying to find a way if we can make a DIY version, which requires us to find vintage books that are roughly the same size as a kindle. We’ll be on the lookout once the quarantine is over.

5. Adventure Together Map Art

This is another one I saw on Etsy, which is such a great place to find DIY inspiration. You can do a paper cut out version or a digital version, but I think a digital version is too much of a copy rather than a DIY. What do you think?

Materials You Need: Map, Colored Cardstock , Glue , Scissors

I suggest you go thrifting for a map, or it won’t be cost-effective. We used our old Rand McNally.

6. DIY Scratch Map

We love scratch maps and already have two world scratch maps and a US scratch map in our home. I didn’t realize until recently that you can make your very own.

Materials You Need: World Map, Contact Paper, Acrylic Paint, Dishwashing Soap, Candle, Brush

You can find the instructions here .

7. Packing Cube

Packing cubes travel with us everywhere. Not only do they keep all your things organized, but with their compression, you can pack in so much more.

Materials You Need: Rip Stop Nylon (1/2 yard), Mesh Fabric (1/3 yard), Zipper 36″, Iron on Vinyl

Find the instructions here or here .

Pro Tip:  Our biggest concern for this DIY would be how they hold up since we typically stuff them to the brim. These are the ones we currently use, and they are super sturdy.

8. Travel Neck Pillow

We never travel with neck pillows, because we like to pack light and they are bulky. Instead, we use a hack and stuff our puffy jacket into a pocket to use as a pillow. We do, however, know plenty of people who love traveling with neck pillows, and this  DIY Buckwheat Travel Pillow by SewDIY is perfect.

9. DIY Passport Holder

Passport covers don’t just make your passport look pretty. They protect it from wear and tear. Here’s a lovely DIY passport holder tutorial by Lovely Indeed.

10. DIY Luggage Tags

A luggage tag is a great way to let your luggage stand out. It’s also useful to keep your phone number in case the airline loses it, which has happened to us a few times. Here’s a beautiful DIY luggage tag tutorial to give your luggage some bling.

11. Jewelry Roll + Case

If you bring a lot of jewelry with you, this mini jewelry roll tutorial from Haberdashery Fun is a great way to keep them organized. It can also be used at home to store your essential jewelry too.

12. Sunglass Case

Sunglasses are an essential travel item. While I tend to toss them freely in a bag, I could give them more love and care. I think this cute  DIY sunglass case tutorial by DIYCandy  would do the trick.

13. Eyemask

14. sewing kit (ty).

Is this DIY travel project not purrrfect? (Sorry I had to). Of course, you can decorate it with something other than a kitty, but do you really want to lose then pun? You can find the DIY Sewing Kitty tutorial here . Photo courtesy of Sew4Home .

15. DIY Vintage Book Travel Tech Organizer

This DIY travel tech organizer will also have to wait until the quarantine is over so we can go thrifting and look for vintage books.

The Bon Vivant

The Bon Vivant: Unique Gifts for Traveler Foodies

I forgot the term bon vivant the other day and had to google “what’s the word for a fancy person who enjoys the finer things in life.” If you have an epicurean traveler in your life (AKA: foodie), an oenophile (wine connoisseur) or craft cocktail lover, then you know how tough they can be to buy for. As unique gifts for foodie travelers, I suggest subscription boxes, gourmet food, and other gifts to explore their sophisticated tastes.

Snake River Farms American Kobe Beef

For starters, consider having mouth-watering American Wagyu (Kobe-style) steaks from Snake River Farms delivered straight to your foodie traveler’s door. Step away from the Omaha Steaks website, and instead let me introduce you to Snake River Farms. Their family-owned, humanely-raised, sustainable American Kobe beef is regularly featured in Michelin starred restaurants.

As a perfect holiday gift for your favorite foodie, check out Snake River’s gift center. Or treat your family to a special holiday meal with Snake River steaks, roasts, or grilling favorites as the main course!

SomMailier Exclusive French Wine Subscription

For your favorite wine-lover, how about French wines personally curated by a family of travelers and winemakers? SomMailier selects wines from handcrafted French vineyards that aren’t available anywhere else in the U.S. They offer several subscription options, as well as a single-delivery gift option of 3 or 6 wines in red, white, or mixed. The SomMailier site has really great reviews of personal service touches, plus each box comes with stories about the winemakers and vineyards. But what really sold me on SomMailier is the company story – read it here .

Universal Yum Snack Box Subscription

Universal Yum is like a dream to me: a curated box of salty and sweet treats shows up at my door from a different country each month?  Don’t mind me over here, camped out by my mail slot already.  The Universal Yum selection team says that they’ve sampled thousands of treats from around the world, but only the ones that made them say “Holy &#%!” made it into the Yum Shop.  With each snack food subscription box, you’ll receive a booklet of trivia and games, and the larger subscription options also include bonus content recipes and more.

If your foodie traveler hits up the local grocery store for souvenirs (OK, this is me), then Try the World is the perfect travel gift for them! There are options of boxes focused on a certain country every month or an assortment of artisanal snacks, and plans ranging from monthly to yearly.

Try the World subscription box for foodie travelers

Expert and aspiring mixologists will love this cool travel gift box that includes everything you need to make 4+ craft cocktails , including the spirits! Saloon Box expands cocktail lovers’ palates by exposing them to new drinks and spirits they might otherwise not have tried. It’s perfect for reminiscing about a favorite speakeasy visit on a date night in, and consistently gets high ratings from subscribers. This box only ships to certain states since it contains liquor – so if it won’t work for your traveler, check out the Shaker and Spoon box instead .

The Valleys of the Assassins by Freya Stark

The Valleys of the Assassins And Other Persian Travels

Freya Stark was an English-Italian writer, explorer and historian who, at the age of 34, set out to explore remote and dangerous parts of the Middle East via foot, donkey, camel, and car. The book was hailed as a classic when published in 1934, and established Stark as an explorer. It chronicles her travels into the mountainous region between Iraq and present-day Iran. This is a perfect read for adventurous women on your gift list.

Monumental Journey: The Daguerreotypes of Girault de Prangey

cover of the book Monumental Journey - The Daguerreotypes of Girault de Prangey

Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey was a student of the daguerreotype, an early photographic process, as well as architecture of the Middle East. He toured Italy and the countries of the eastern Mediterranean between 1841 and 1844, producing over 900 daguerreotypes that remain the earliest surviving photographs of Greece, Palestine, Egypt, Syria and Turkey. This is one of my favorite books and I recommend it for any traveler who loves photography!

The Lost City of the Incas by Hiram Bingham

book cover of Lost City of the Incas - Hiram Bingham

Do you know who “rediscovered” the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu? It was American academic, explorer and (later) politician Hiram Bingham. With the help of local indigenous farmers, he reintroduced Machu Picchu to the world in 1911 and went on to uncover two more lost Incan cities. If your traveler’s bucket list includes Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail, this is a perfect gift for them!

My Journey to Lhasa by Alexandra David-Neel

My Journey to Lhasa - Alexandra David-Neel

How did a 54-year-old Frenchwoman visit Tibet in 1923, when it was forbidden to foreigners? A student of languages, eastern religions and philosophy, as well as a former opera singer, Alexandra David-Neel disguised herself as a male pilgrim and traveled Tibet for two months before she was discovered! David-Neel was the first Western woman to be received by any Dalai Lama, and the tale of her determination is an inspiring read. (Caught in a snowstorm at one point, she and her guide had to boil their leather boots for sustenance!). If your traveler has Tibet on their bucket list, this is a great gift idea.

Travels in West Africa by Mary Kingsley

Travels in West Africa - Mary Kingsley

I first read Mary Kingsley’s book Travels in West Africa in a college course many years ago! A scientific writer and daughter of two doctors, she wrote an account of her solo travels in which she sought to finish her late father’s research on primitive religions. Kinsley made her way through the Congo and all of its dangers dressed in the same clothes she would have at home, and helped shape European perceptions of African cultures and British imperialism through her writings and lectures.

No Hurry to Get Home: A Memoir by Emily Hahn

cover of the book No Hurry to Get Home - A Memoir - Emily Hahn

Emily Hahn was the author of 53 books and nearly 200 articles and short stories for the New Yorker from 1929 to 1996.  She challenged all the stereotypes of her time, traveling solo to the Belgian Congo at the age of 25, living in China as the concubine to a Shangai poet, and advocating for environmentalism. This is a collection of 23 of her articles from the New Yorker, published between 1937 and 1970. It’s a perfect gift for adventurous women and literature-loving travelers.

The portable Kodak Printomatic comes in a variety of fun colors, and is a camera and printer in one, so you never have to worry about buying toner. Its 2×3 prints are durable: water-resistant, smudge free and tear-resistant, which makes them perfect for travel. The prints are also adhesive backed so you can easily add them to scrapbooks. This is a great gift for travel kids and teens, travelers who keep a daily journal, or travelers who like meeting locals – they can snap a selfie together and share a copy right away.

Online Experiences from Airbnb

Airbnb Experiences have become one of my favorite ways to find “hidden gems” and culture tours with locals when I travel. Now, they’re expanding experiences with online tours, workshops, and more. Choose from virtual culture experiences like a street art experience in Brooklyn, guided tour of the Sistine Chapel, live “wonders of Lisbon” experiences and more. With their global workshops , you can drop into a yoga class in the DR, learn origami from a local in Seoul, can even take a flamenco dance in Spain.

4ocean is an organization that sells products to fund its programs to clean oceans and coastlines. Their business is founded belief that business can be a force for good and the actions of individual people, collectively, have the power to change the world. Check out their gift options including a “bracelet of the month” subscription which is twofold: your traveler gets a cool bracelet, and they clean up one pound of ocean trash! HOW DURABLE ARE OUR BAGS?

WATCH AND SEE

Let customers speak for us

Great bag ,great quality. I'm glad to see good American workmanship and I will pay extra to support it.

This is the perfect size for travel to and from work. I have a smaller laptop ( 13 inches ). The quality is great. I love that it is unique. I highly recommend. Its worth the price.

Needed a wallet that could take a beating, and had a simple design. Definitely a buy it for life piece.

Incredible bag! beautiful workmanship, and so very versatile! This will be a companion for life!

Happy birthday to me! This bag is beautiful. The leather is thick and sturdy, craftsmanship is gorgeous, smells amazing! It is a huge bag, I think my 6-year old could fit inside, but he's pretty slim. For what I carry around, it isn't heavy and the straps don't cut in. I added the cross shoulder strap but haven't needed to use it yet. Again, beautiful bag, fast shipping and I love that it's Georgia made!

Stunning backpack I hope to be using regularly the rest of my life. Who needs a purse when you have this backpack!!!???

Finally decided to pull the trigger on one of these in mocha. Outstanding quality! Very pleased with my purchase. This briefcase will last years.

I bought this for my husband's birthday. He was blown away! So we'll made and quite larger than I expected. Beautifully made.

I love this wallet. I definitely reccomend buying this if you don't like the big bulky wallets.

I love my Sarah bag! The leather is amazing; I love the pebbled texture and softness of it. It feels amazing. I purchased it in saddle and the color looks rich and warm, and the patina it's developing adds to its beautiful appearance. This "little" bag will surprise you. It looks compact; however, it's very spacious. And I actually like that it doesn't have extra pockets which may hinder the spaciousness. I honestly love this bag so much I'm seriously considering ordering it in black. NATHAN is amazing. He responds quickly to injuries and has excellent customer service! GFG is a great company. Ordering from them was an awesome experience from start to finish.

Outstanding buying experience. Beautiful leather bag. Highly recommend

Purchased as a present for my bf- I was worried because it was delayed in delivery by a few days for reasons known only to USPS, but it arrived! Box was banged up, but the bag inside was absolutely perfect! Gorgeous deep color, that nice real leather smell, extremely well made and I know it'll only get better with age. Thank you to Adam, who was credited for making the bag- it's beautiful!!

Second bag we have Bought and love both! Great quality, and a timeless piece that will age wonderfully.

At 5’2” I am a short person, but this bag does not overwhelm me. I also like the fact that it is sturdy but not “too heavy” at the same time. The two pockets also help keep things organized and I love the little monogram!

Exactly as advertised. Great quality. Very easy to work with the customer service team to customize!! My boyfriend loved it.

If you don’t know what Etsy is, you should get familiar with it now.

Etsy is a unique online marketplace where you can buy custom, handmade and vintage items from independent shop owners from all around the world.

You can think of it like this: instead of shopping mass-produced items from big box (virtual) stores like Amazon, shopping on Etsy is more like walking down main street and popping in to a small local shop with distinct and sometimes quirky items that you just can’t find anywhere else.

And that is what I love most about shopping on Etsy. You almost always stumble across something you absolutely love, and didn’t even know existed!

In this article, I will share with you my all-time favorite Etsy shops with unique items related to travel, including custom travel art for your home, handmade travel bags, tags and luggage, custom travel journals, and so much more!

Disclosure : Links in this page will take you directly to shops on Etsy that we decided to feature. If you click a link and decide to make a purchase, we may earn a small commission on this transaction. That’s a Wrap

Etsy is a unique marketplace that allows you to connect with other moms, artisans, and small business people that have a talent for crafts and design, and who put their hearts into the products they sell online. There are not a ton of Etsy shops related to travel, especially in comparison to jewelry or home decor, but I hope I’ve been able to show you that some excellent Etsy shops for travel do exist. Happy shopping!

We’ve spent hours on Pinterest browsing for the most beautiful DIY travel gifts and even got our own hands dirty on some of these ideas to find you the absolute best crafty projects. So grab your craft box and let’s get crafting.

40+ best DIY travel gifts with an image of crafty items

Super simple travel DIY ideas

#1 pillowcases or bed sheets.

Two pillow cases with handwritten text on it

This is actually one of the travel DIY projects that I did for my first-ever solo trip abroad when I went to study in the US. Though, technically I didn’t really “craft” anything. All I did was buy two pillowcases and ask all my friends and family to write something for me.

It was a great way to have a tangible piece of home and read all the heartwarming messages they left for me while I was abroad. It was the best pick-me-up I could wish for whenever I would feel homesick.

So whether you’re looking for a DIY travel gift or just a keepsake for yourself, buying a pillowcase or bed linen and asking friends and family to write you a message is a super simple and fun way to go about it.

#2 Clothing with messages or DIY decorations

The back of a white t-shirt with "Mallorca" handwritten

In line with the previous idea of the pillowcase, you can actually apply that to any type of clothing.

It’s a travel craft that works both as a gift and for yourself (and make it a heartfelt gift for yourself).

Just buy waterproof textile markers, a shirt, a hoodie, or whatnot , and make sure you bring it when you’re saying goodbye to friends and family before a trip.

Another really awesome variation of this is to bring a blank piece of clothing and markers with you on a trip and ask the people you meet along the way to leave you a message. By the end of your trip, you will have a personalized and heartfelt souvenir. Me and my friends actually did this years ago on our trip to Mallorca and I still have this shirt to this date.

Not sure what items you could use? Here is some inspiration

#3 Decorate or personalize other travel items

A stainless steel water bottle

Another really simple DIY travel craft is to buy something tangible and then decorate it.

The key here is to buy travel items that you (or the traveler whom this gift is for) will actually take on the journey. Then all you need are waterproof markers, a needle and thread, paint, or anything else to decorate it.

Here are some examples of typical travel items that you can easily decorate and turn into a DIY project. For some of these items, there is also a more advanced DIY option down below. But I figured we would start really easy before getting to the hardcore project.

  • Water bottle
  • Sleeping mask
  • (Sun)glasses cases
  • Fanny packs
  • Toiletry bags
  • Makeup bags
  • Packing cubes
  • Luggage tags
  • Neck pillow

#4 Money in a bag

Mini vacation in a bag

Now, I actually saw this idea on Etsy when I was crafting my funny travel gift guide , but honestly, you could just recreate this at home.

All you need is some sand, shells, a paper umbrella, a plastic bag, and a funny tag that you can easily make yourself.

#5 DIY money gifts

A suitcase and two airplanes origami from cash

As boring as it may sound, money is actually the best gift for travelers. But since most people don’t enjoy giving cash, I created a list of 76 epic ways to give money .

So if you are looking for a practical DIY travel gift that the recipient will actually use, then pick one of the unique cash projects from that list. The ideas range from super-duper simple to highly creative (and time-consuming) options, so pick whatever suits you and the occasion.

For one of my friends, I actually made this suitcase and airplanes because she was going on a long-term trip.

Practical DIY travel ideas to take on a journey

#6 diy packing cubes.

A blue packing cube with clothes

Packing cubes are super handy bags that help you to organize your luggage in such a way that you can actually find it and that it fits neatly in a backpack or suitcase.

But did you know that you can just make them yourself?

Pick a nice fabric or your favorite color (or the recipient’s) and follow Melly Sews’ instructions to make your own packing cubes.

#7 Passport cover

A passport holder

Protect your most important travel document in style with a self-made passport cover!

Now, it is made with leather which adds a little extra layer of difficulty because of its sturdiness, but if you follow Lovely Indeed’s instructions you should be able to work it out just fine.

#8 Camera strap

An embroidered camera strap

Nothing beats a handmade gift, especially if it’s a beautiful and practical one, such as a camera strap . It’s the perfect travel DIY idea for photography lovers, that will allow them to carry a bit of home around their neck whenever they take their cameras out.

There are two beautiful DIY options here, one made with cotton webbing and another made with a scarf . They’re about the same level of difficulty, so just pick whichever design you like best.

#9 Various bags

A blue small string bag

You could probably make about a thousand different DIY bags for travelers , so I am not going to list them all here. Instead, I selected three awesome sites with instructions for the three most practical bags for travelers; string bags, pouches, and tote bags.

  • Brit.co made a tutorial on how to make a simple string bag at home
  • A Kailo Chic Life has a step-by-step guide to making cute fruit-themed pouches
  • Pretty Handy Girl made a list of 21 ways to make your own tote bag

#10 Jewelry roll

A colrful jewelry roll for travelers

Learn how to make your own jewelry roll and transport your precious accessories safely on the road with Haber Dashery Fun!

I would say, it is a bit more of an advanced travel DIY idea, but if you’re willing to properly sit down and take your time for it, anyone can make this at home.

#11 Sleeping mask

A pink silk sleeping mask

We discussed the simple DIY version of a sleeping mask above; buy a blank one and decorate it with textile markers or paint.

If you’re looking for a more crafty version, check out Martha Stewart’s DIY sleeping mask tutorial.

#12 DIY travel neck pillow

A neck pillow for travel

A neck or travel pillow is an essential travel item for those who often take long-haul flights, buses, or trains. If you want to catch some sleep, this is a must.

And there is nothing better than sleeping on a DIY travel neck pillow !

So check out Instructables for a tutorial on how to make one yourself. One little extra tip from me before you start, don’t be frugal with the stuffing. It’s the sturdiness of your pillow that will determine how well you will be able to sleep with it.

#13 Travel toiletries wrap

If you are looking for a cute DIY travel gift idea, then a toiletry roll with travel-sized toiletries is a fun option.

There are two options that I select for you, one with and one without sowing. I think they are equally nice, and (if you know how to sow) equally difficult.

However, if you’re not great with a needle and thread, the Instructables no-sew option is probably the best for you. Otherwise, check out The Yellow Bird House for a beautiful sown travel wrap.

#14 Scrunchies

A blue and a white scrunchie

Scrunchies are super cute DIY travel gifts for little girls, teens, and grown-up women. You can vary with the type of fabric and colors you use, depending on who the scrunchie is for.

Check our Hey Wanderer Blog for the full instructions

#15 DIY travel wallet

A red passport wallet

A DIY travel wallet is a slightly more advanced project, but with Instructables free printable, and a step-by-step guide, it’s doable for any level crafter.

Pick a color or design you like, and you will be able to keep your passport and money safe in style!

#16 DIY travel cable organizers

A black travel cord organizer

If you like to keep stuff organized, or if you travel with a bunch of cords, cables, and earphones with cords, DIY travel cable organizers are a fun project for you.

There are quite a number of different DIY travel cable organizers online, so I’m going to leave it up to you to pick the best one for you from DIY Candy’s list .

#17 Luggage tags

A plain black leather luggage tag

The easiest way to make a DIY luggage tag is by decorating a plain one. However, you can also get a lot more crafty and make one from scratch. The Spruce Crafts gathered the 16 best DIY luggage tag ideas , so have a look and choose whichever one you like best (or whichever one you think you can make yourself).

#18 Sunglasses case

A green pot holder

Now, before you start with this DIY travel craft for your expensive high-quality sunglasses, let me give you a fair warning.

This is not the most sturdy case, and it probably won’t provide the very best protection for expensive sunglasses. So if you are looking for a high-quality case to properly protect your sunglasses, I would advise you to buy a hard case and decorate it to make it your own.

But if you are like me and often travel with a cheap pair of sunglasses too, this is a fun travel craft idea to protect them a little more.

Here is what you do.

Buy a square-shaped potholder, fold it in two, check if your sunglasses actually fit inside, and sew the bottom and the sides. You can vary the size a little bit by sowing more closely to the end or a bit more inward, which will make your sunglasses fit more loosely or tight.

#19 DIY coupon book

DIY vouchers for people

This is one of my favorite DIY travel gifts, in fact, I made a coupon book l ike this for my parents when I left for another one of my long-term trips. But it works as a gift for travelers as well as for those staying behind.

Simply come up with a list of cute favors and then check out my full guide on making your own coupon book .

DIY travel accessories & jewelry

#20 necklaces.

A woman making a necklace

Whether you’re looking for the best necklaces to make for yourself or to give as a token for a traveler, there is an endless amount of options out there.

And because I could not possibly choose between all these amazing DIY travel accessories, I’m just going to let you pick yourself. Head over to DIY Joy’s list of 31 unique necklaces to make at home.

#21 Bracelets

A collection of selfmade bracelets

The same can be said for bracelets, which is why Pillar Box Blue’s list of 51(!) different homemade bracelets is by far the best source of inspiration if you are looking for a DIY bracelet.

A woman making a ring herself

Looking for a unique ring for travel lovers? Then DIY Craftsy’s list is your go-to source.

They’ve gathered the 45 most beautiful DIY ring ideas for you to try at home.

#23 Earrings

A set of selfmade earrings

Regardless of whether you’re looking for cute homemade earrings for yourself, or to give to a traveler to take on to their next destination, you will find a beautiful (and doable) design on I Always Pick The Thimble .

#24 Keychains

A selfmade keychain from rope

The last DIY travel accessory may not be as exciting as necklaces, rings, and bracelets, but they are practical nonetheless.

With a DIY keychain, you can give a small personalized, and heartfelt keepsake that any traveler can take on a trip. Whether they’ll attach it to their suitcase or backpack, with your homemade keychain they will always have a piece of home with them.

Check out The Creatives Hour for a whole range of different DIY keychain ideas.

Travel DIY ideas for your home

A deck of travel guides

I know, in the mind of a traveler it’s always travel time. But on the odd occasions that you need to know the actual time, what better way to show the time than with a DIY travel-inspired clock ?

My favorite one by far was a clock made from travel guides by Instructables . Because honestly, my bookshelf is filled with old guidebooks that I probably won’t use again, but that I love too much to throw away. So this is a unique way to put them to practical use.

Another great option is to make a clock with travel photos. For that check out the It’s Always Autumn tutorial on how to make a clock with one photo.

Alternatively, head over to Wonderful DIY to make a clock with multiple photos. Their design is actually for family photos, but obviously, you can easily adopt that to travel photos.

#26 DIY travel wall ideas & photo displays

A wall with a photo display

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with all your travel photos, check out It’s Always Autumn’s list with 20 different and unique DIY travel wall ideas.

I probably could have filled this entire list with a hundred or more ideas of DIY things to do with your travel photos , but personally, I think that It’s Always Autumn has done a great job at selecting the 20 most beautiful ones to try at home.

#27 Vacation jar with photo

Who couldn’t use a vacation in a jar?

Whether you’re treating yourself with these travel DIY projects or you’re actually looking for gift inspiration, everyone deserves a little holiday at home, and with a vacation jar and photo holder you can easily create that at home!

All you need is this guide from Left on Peninsula Road , a small jar with a cork lid, a cute photo, a paperclip, and some sand and shells to fill the jar with holiday vibes and you’re all set.

#28 DIY travel scrapbook

Our adventure scrapbook

Are you looking for a way to organize all your travel photos, tickets, and other keepsakes in a way that you will be able to look back at it every once in a while?

Go for a DIY travel scrapbook. It’s basically a photo album but with a little more creativity and freedom to add whatever you want to the book.

If you’re struggling to start from scratch or just want an example. Check out Martha Stewart’s list of scrapbook ideas, or buy the adventure book from Amazon. It comes with blank pages, but at least the cover is already done for you.

#29 Keepsake box

A wooden keepsake box

Another fun way to store your keepsakes is in one of Marta Stewart’s travel box DIY projects.

Basically, you just need a wooden box like the one in the photo, some paint, and you can decorate your keepsake box in the theme of whichever country you visited.

#30 Planter with a flag design

Are you looking for a fun DIT travel craft idea to add more green to your home?

Then try Pretty Handy Girl’s flag planter box !

Her example is the American flag, but you could paint it in the color of any flag. Or just make multiple planters and collect the flags from all around the world to create an international green home.

#31 Food from a country they love

A pot of paella

Are you a great cook ? Then prepare the recipient’s favorite international food and recreate the taste of travel right at home!

Whether it’s that special pasta they had in Italy, a curry from Thailand, or the best taco they had in Mexico, if you know how to make it right, they will be filled with delightful memories (and flavors).

Are you not much of a cook yourself?

Don’t worry, you can still give really awesome DIY food gifts for travelers , check out the two next options.

#32 Cookie jar mix

Three mason jars with cookie material fillers

Alright, so you may not be the star in the kitchen, but you can be a star in giving by creating a DIY cookie jar mix of their favorite international cookie or other food!

Whether it’s for Italian Biscotti, French Madeleines, or Dutch Speculaas, all you need to do is fill the jar with the exact amount of ingredients layer by layer, print the recipe, and tie it to the jar with a ribbon and you’re all set.

#33 Travel-themed gift basket

A Christmas basket with food and Christmas ornament

Gift baskets always make great DIY gifts for anyone, and travelers are no exception to that.

Now, I can imagine that you might struggle a bit with deciding what to put in a DIY travel-themed gift basket , so to help you out I wrote a guide filled with awesome travel-inspired gift baskets. Some are pre-made (in case you decide to ditch the whole DIY idea and just go for an easy and quick gift), but it also includes a list of fun DIY basket ideas that travelers will love.

And if you need help with arranging your basket, and making it look pretty, then I’ve got your back too! Check out my guide on how to make gift baskets at home .

#34 Refurbished vintage suitcase

I’ll finish the home travel crafts with the most advanced, but therefore also the most unique option; a vintage suitcase side table!

In theory, it sounds quite easy. But as with most DIY crafts, it usually takes longer than you initially expected, but it’s well worth the effort.

I mean, what’s cooler than having a refurbished vintage handmade side table ?

Map-inspired DIY projects

#35 photo map.

A map of the unites states with photo framses for US states.

Of course, there is no list of travel DIY ideas without map-inspired ideas.

There is something magical about maps that makes them awesome for DIY projects and travelers.

The first option is a beautiful (and more advanced) DIY photo map, like the store-bought one from the photo. But to make it yourself, follow Cut Craft Create’s instructions . The example is a US map, but you could use it for a world map, or any country or continent.

One side note though, once you’re getting closer to completing the map, it might be a bit harder to cut the right shapes and fit them on the map. My advice is to cut the photos a bit smaller, in the end so that it fits more easily.

#36 Scratch maps

Scratch maps are the number-one maps for travelers. Nothing more soothing than scratching off all the places you’ve ventured before and dreaming about the ones to come.

But now, you can make a scratch map from scratch ! (Sorry, couldn’t help the pun).

Check Instructables for a step-by-step tutorial. And I must say, this was actually a lot easier than I expected.

#37 Heart-shaped map

Photo frame with maps shape like a heart

Heart-shaped maps are actually a super popular wedding and Valentine’s gifts and many people pay a significant amount of money to get one. But you can easily make them at home.

Check out House of Mahalo for the full instructions. In short, get a black cardboard the size of a photo frame. Cut out the shape of a heart, find a map of a place that has a special meaning to you or the recipient, and place it all in the frame.

#38 More heart-inspired maps

Looking for more heartwarming DIY travel craft ideas? (Yes, pun intended).

Then Welcome to the Mouse House’s heart world map is the perfect project for you.

It’s also a super fun activity to do with kids and infect them with the travel bug from a young age.

#39 Magnets

A fridge filled with magnets from around the world

Are you or the recipient an avid fridge magnet collector? Then add a DIY map magnet to the collection.

There are various different ways to go about it, but I selected two of my favorite ones. The first one is made with “glass rocks” and the second one with a miniature photo frame .

#40 Globe-themed projects

An image of a vintage globe

Like maps, globes have a special attraction for travelers (probably because it’s the representation of everything they love), so any globe-inspired project is a fun DIY travel gift.

DIY Candy gathered some of the best globe-inspired projects from around the web, so check it out for inspiration

#41 Christmas ornament

Bring the travel vibes into the holiday season with these cute map-themed ornaments .

They are made from mason jar lids and are actually really easy to make.

#42 Map-themed lampshade

A lampcase made from a vintage map

The last map-inspired DIY travel craft is a super awesome lampshade !

I’ll admit, it’s one of the more advanced options, and I would probably only recommend making this one for yourself and not as a gift, unless you add a lamp that actually fits the shade and you’re certain the recipient truly loves this style.

Cotton cosmetic bag, 'Diamond Flower'

Love the non-matchy matchy pattern and the little tassel.

This is very well made; it seems like it will hold up to wear. The plastic lining inside is very sturdy. The surprise is that it has 2 zippers and compartments, the main one on the top and one on the side with its own little compartment. So handy!

Beautiful color and lots of room inside. The outside side pockets are super useful. Very sharp design!

Bryan at the Douro Valley

Hi, I'm Bryan

I create lifelong memories, one trip at a time..

So, you want to visit Europe – but you are less than thrilled with the idea of spending your vacation sardined into a bus with 40 people you don't know? You are in the right place. I help people travel a different way, by designing trips that allow you to discover Europe on your own, or with a small group tour (most with fewer than 8 people). After more than 25 years of guiding small group tours in Europe, there are very few corners that I haven't been to (most of them many, many times). Friends there joke that I know their countries better than they do – only it's no joke, I really do. READ MORE

Handmade Travel Home Decor: Home Decoration for Travelers

I love travel themed items and have previously written posts on some of my favorite handmade travel themed wedding products and travel themed jewelry . I love globes, vintage maps, vacation photos, old postcards, etc. and love when I find items that incorporate travel themed elements into useful home decorations and furnishings. So we decided to put together another list on some great handmade travel themed home decor items.

These include pieces for all parts of the home from the office to the bedrooms and include everything from fridge magnets and lampshades to wall art and shower curtains. The items were also chosen to fit a wide range of decorating tastes and budgets with most items ranging in the USD $20 to $150 range.

Just so you know, many of the home decor items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel themed home furnishings online.

The majority of the items on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. We love supporting these great individual artists and small businesses.

One of the things I love most about shopping for items on Etsy is that most artists can do personalized or custom items. Many of these items on this list are truly unique and many of them can be personalized for you.

We strove to include travel home decor pieces from around the world and items came from a number of places in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia. However, the majority are from artists in the United States and United Kingdom.

If you are looking for a gift for your favorite traveler, but don’t find it here, consider checking out our guide to gifts for travelers . It contains 75 gift suggestions that should suit any budget or type of traveler!

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about any of these items included. We hope that this list helps inspire you to show your wanderlust in decorating your own home!

MOVA Solar-Powered Globes

I am in love with the solar-powered globes from MOVA . We first spotted them spinning in a window display in a shop in Venice, Italy. We assumed they were spinning because of their base so were surprised when the shopkeeper put them in our hands and they kept spinning!

The globes spin on their own using solar power and magnets so they don’t need to be plugged in and there are no batteries to be changed. They just need light, either indirect light from the sun or indoor lights. They can also be put onto about any base.

In addition to world maps, they also sell ones depicting planets, the moon, artwork, and sports teams. They come in a variety of color schemes with several base options.

The companies sells their globes both on the MOVA website and on Amazon . Just be sure to buy them from an authorized site and register them once you receive them to benefit from the warranty.

I love traveling as much as I love handmade products! So whenever I travel, I make sure that I get to purchase handcrafts especially those made by local community artisans. There is just one time, I went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, I never had the chance to actually buy my souvenir, but thankfully I found a store called localbazaar who sells handmade crafts from Chiang Mai!

Hi Ruth, Yes, handmade travel products make for great souvenirs. If you don’t pick up something while traveling, you can always seem to find something online out there 😉 Best, Jessica

I’ve always wanted to travel the world as a kid my dream job was to be a doctor overseas. I’m a bit sad that I’ve never ventured outside of the United States. My favorite is definitely the book safe! I’ve always wanted a hollow book. My mandatory entry I hit too soon it was 17, 15, and 7. Hope I can still be entered.

July 15, 2017 at 12:19 pm

Hi Maranda, It is never too late to travel (or do most things!) so don’t give up on your dream of doing some international travel! I will go in and manually change it for you so your entry is valid. Best, Jessica

This post is so much fun!!! We actually own 2 of these… the map pin boards (which we got one year for our girls) and the scratch off map (which my daughter got for my husband). We always had fun moving the pin to our “next planned destination.” My husband loves maps, and these are terrific gifts. I recently received coasters from a friend that have outlines of areas in the city where we both used to live. I loved it… these are perfect gifts for the traveler in your life!

Why is choosing fabric so difficult?

Choosing the right fabrics that match your style aesthetic and work well together can be challenging.

When will I find the time?

What to make first? A busy schedule can make it difficult to sew an entire capsule wardrobe from scratch.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

handmade travel

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

handmade travel

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

handmade travel

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

handmade travel

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

Ashland gift shop selling handmade Kentucky Derby hats

ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) - This weekend is the first weekend in May, which means it’s Derby time.

Since the first Kentucky Derby, a big part of the race has been the fashion and the hats.

There’s a place not too far away if you want to grab a derby hat for this weekend.

Amanda Gillum, owner of Gillum’s Gifts and More on Carter Avenue in Ashland, has been making derby hats and fascinators and selling them at her shop to get people ready for the Derby.

It’s one of the only places in our region to get derby hats without having to drive to Churchill Downs.

“It’s been really fun for me because I can provide them at an affordable price,” Gillum said.

The store used to be a pharmacy with a gift shop up front. In November, Gillum decided to take the plunge to the side her heart called her to, and now nearly every square inch is filled with what makes her happy by transitioning to a gift shop full time.

She makes floral arrangements, gift baskets and now derby hats.

“This year we’re doing all these things, we have prom flowers and the color, and now I get to focus on the store,” said Gillum. “We said if we’re going to do it, let’s do it big.”

The shelves are full of her handmade hats, and the community has responded.

“We just gradually put more and more out as we made them, but they were selling so fast,” Gillum said.

Take your pick, she can customize your order.

“Whatever you want,” she said.

Whether you’re headed for the races, or celebrating from home, Gillum is glad to send you with a piece of Ashland, Kentucky.

“I think Ashland is very much growing, and we’re a small little neat city really. Everything is getting bigger around here,” Gillum said. “For people to want to come and get these for their parties and use their hats, I love that. It’s a whole lot of fun for me, and when people get excited, that makes me more excited, so I’m just encouraged by that.”
