Schools’ tour operator Halsbury Travel Group has bought IBT Travel with the support of investment group Literacy Capital.
It is the company’s first acquisition since it was bought by Literacy Capital, an investment fund set up with a charitable objective, in 2022.
IBT, founded in 1986, is based in Prestwick, Scotland, and provides ski and educational trips to both English and Scottish schools.
Halsbury Travel has been offering school trips for nearly 40 years and offers a range of products across ski, music, sport, languages and education.
As a result of the deal, Halsbury said it would be able to offer its trips to a wider client base and collaborate with IBT to improve processes, systems and commercial practices.
IBT founder Iain Black said: “I believe Halsbury is the right home for IBT and I know that it will continue to thrive under its new ownership.”
Halsbury chief executive Robin Parry, who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years at operators including Discover the World, Gold Medal, Holidaybreak and Airtours, said: “Iain has built a fantastic business with a great reputation and excellent people.
“It is very complementary to Halsbury Travel and I am delighted it is now part of the group, enabling us to collectively grow and flourish. This is an exciting new chapter for Halsbury Travel Group.”

What will students see and do.
IBT Travel offers school trips all over Europe and the world to destinations where pupils can learn about historical battlefields, geography, art, architecture and more.
IBT Travel also offers school ski trips to Italy and Austria. Its central location in Northern Italy is in Val Di Fiemme. You can choose to keep your school ski trip to Val Di Fiemme, or you can travel to any of the following sites:
– Bellamonte – Cermis – Pampeago – Folgaria
On a trip to Val Di Fiemme, you’re almost guaranteed to have 160 km of skiable terrain covered with fresh snow. It’s a quieter location, so it’s perfect for younger students.
All of the other individual resorts are within 30 minutes of Val Di Fiemme, so there are large slopes for every age and skill level.
The Salzburger Sportwelt, the central location in Austria, offers over 350km of interconnected slopes. Most of the resorts here are situated within a 30-minute drive. Due to the sheer size of the skiable area, this location is perfect for larger school groups.
But if skiing isn’t on the curriculum, how about a history trip to Normandy? Your students can immerse themselves in WWII history with the Normandy beach landing in 1944.
Or take a trip to the USA, where pupils will learn about the Statue of Liberty and take photos of the famous Brooklyn Bridge in New York, or visit The White House in the country’s vibrant and history-rich capital, Washington DC.
Some of the other locations available include:
– Amsterdam – Barcelona – Amalfi coast – Berlin – Dunkirk – Czech Republic – French Alps – Iceland – Krakow – Paris
How does the trip link to the curriculum?
Whether it’s a reward trip to Disneyland in Paris or a chance to educate pupils on the history of WWII, outdoor education is essential in creating a lasting, memorable and educational experience.
Ski trips can help pupils with increasing their confidence and developing social skills. Getting involved in physical exercise can encourage positive behaviour.
The educational trips offered by IBT Travel connect to the curriculum of you chosen subject.
Subjects covered
Teaching resources provided.
You’ll be happy to hear that IBT Travel provides teachers with all the resources you need to make your trip educational. Well-versed tour consultants will accompany you and your students to ensure that maximum learning takes place.
Minimum and maximum group size
Small and large groups are welcome. On ski trips, a ratio of one teacher to every ten students is recommended. If you are travelling with a smaller group, the cost will be slightly higher, but the team at IBT Travel will work with you to find the most cost-efficient solution.
Details of risk assessment
Parents and teachers will be happy to hear that IBT Travel is an Assured Member of the STF (School Travel Forum).
All transport providers are audited. Students will also be briefed with a fire safety drill when they check into their accommodations.
Generic risk assessment documentation is provided to teachers for both educational and ski trips as part of the package.
You can find the company’s 24-hour emergency contact number and complete details of risk assessments on the website.

Facilities on-site
The facilities available depend on the trip that you book. Find more details about accommodation at the different trip locations on the website.
Opening times
The company has a 24-hour emergency line you can call with any concerns while away on your trip.
If you’re ready to book your trip or have any further questions, you can contact IBT travel at 01292 477 771 or send them an email at [email protected].
The price for ski trips is dependent on various factors, such as the method of travel, the time of year, group size, location and accommodation.
Ski trips in Europe typically range from £700-£1,200 per pupil.
Educational trips further to the US typically range between £1,000 and £1,600. However, a trip to Paris may only cost as little as £349 per pupil.
These prices are based on a group size of 30 pupils.
Travel arrangements
A member of the IBT team will meet you at the airport of your selected destination. The company provides luggage labels and is partnered with the Vamoos travel app, so you’re able to manage all your documents regardless of where you are.

WHA supports Halsbury Travel Group’s Strategic Acquisition
- WHA supports Halsbury Travel Group’s…
WHA was very pleased to support Halsbury Travel Group (‘Halsbury’) with their strategic acquisition of Ski and Educational specialist, IBT Travel (‘IBT’), helping to facilitate the required regulatory approvals.
Halsbury is a leading school tour operator and the strategic acquisition of IBT provides exciting opportunities for the new enlarged Group, including an expanded product offering and customer base, while simultaneously providing opportunities to enhance their day-to-day internal operations.
This deal also represents Halsbury’s first acquisition since receiving investment from Literacy Capital in June 2022, with future M&A an ongoing objective for the team.
WHA has encouragingly observed a buoyant level of M&A activity in the travel sector this year, which we expect to intensify in 2024. If you require support with any M&A related activity and/or fundraise in the travel sector, please do not hesitate to send WHA an enquiry at [email protected] .

New to TTG?
Halsbury travel group acquires venerable scottish school tour operator.
Halsbury Travel Group has completed a deal to acquire Scottish school tour operator of nearly 40 years, IBT Travel, for an undisclosed sum.
Prestwick based IBT was founded in 1986, providing ski and educational trips to English and Scottish schools. The deal is Halsbury’s first acquisition since it was bought by capital market firm Literacy Capital in June 2022.
Group chief executive Robin Parry said it would help Halsbury “grow and flourish” by expanding its product offering and reach, as well as allowing it to enhance processes, systems and commercial practices.
“IBT is very complementary to Halsbury Travel and I am delighted that it is now part of the group, enabling us to collectively grow and flourish,” Parry added. “This is an exciting new chapter for Halsbury Travel Group.”
Commenting on the acquisition, IBT founder Iain Black said: “I believe Halsbury is the right home for IBT and I know that it will continue to thrive under its new ownership.”

Moscow Travel Meeting - 16 November, 2019
Looking forward to seeing several of the Moscow Region Travel Group on Saturday, 16 November at 10:30 at One World Café, 533 South Main Street in Moscow...IDAHO! We get to have the "Back Room" till 1:00 so you're welcome to come and go as you need--we're very laid back! Some of us have just returned from trips so we can expect some great Trip Reports but we also thoroughly enjoy helping plan trips, answer questions, love new tips and suggestions. Everyone's experience and perspectives are fascinating! You'll see a world map on the table in the Back Room as well as several Rick Steves' guide books, maps or miscellaneous Show & Tell items for travel. (Anyone have something for Show & Tell?) Please let us know if you will be there so we can be sure to have plenty of chairs. Because of the busy season and the usual challenges with the snowy roads, we don't meet in December. Our next meeting will be January 18, 2020. Looking forward to seeing you!
I'll be there! And no, I won't have a PowerPoint presentation of my recent trip, haha! What about you? Will you have a PowerPoint?
No, Pam, no PowerPoint! Although don't ever be surprised if Doug does one. Knowing Doug it would be all about numbers though! Might bring my Album (yes, the kind with real photo paper) from the Sisters of SJ Heritage tour for people to flip through on their own.
3 7 42 12 19 See? I can do numbers too, lol!
How many do we have for Saturday? Have you heard from M&S?
Yea!!! So happy you all will be there!
Yay! So far we have Monte & Sharon, Rena, Judy, Pam and Doug & Darcy. I'll let you do the math, Pam.
And Rog, we'd sure like to see some of your packing spread sheets! Could you bring your scales so we can weigh my coffee mug and heating coil, please? (Pam, do you think by asking for the scales that I can get Rog to come to the meeting again? It's been a while!)
Hahaha....not sure. They've got some stuff to do.
I've got kitchen scales if you actually need them!
My digital kitchen scale is one of the best purchases I ever made (about 20 years ago, it seems like!). I weigh every piece of clothing I pack down to the tenth of the ounce!
Happy meeting, you guys!
Thanks, Pam and Janet but actually I don't need to weigh anything! I was just trying to get Rog to the meeting--SHHHHHH, don't tell!
and we have Rod and Lanore--Yay! We just have to contend with the fog but Doug said that we'll be through before we get to the top of the Lewiston Hill. We're leaving early just in case. See you all there!
You'll probably be out of the fog once you get to the top of Lewiston Hill. It's not foggy in Troy right now so I suspect no fog in Moscow or Genesee either.
Thanks, Pam. That's reassuring because at the moment, I can just barely see our back fence! You'd never know there was a "lake" behind us. See you shortly!

Purpose statement
IBT's main aim is to translate, publish and distribute the Bible in the languages of the non-Slavic peoples living in Russia and the other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). These 85 million non-Slavic peoples represent a tremendous diversity of language (at least 130 different languages) and religion (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Shamanism). Some of these peoples number many millions; other languages have only a few thousand speakers. Some of the languages have a long written tradition; in others a written form is only now being created.
IBT Russia/CIS office in Moscow
The office of IBT Russia/CIS is located in St. Andrew's Monastery in Moscow (also the location of the reading room of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Synodal Library), on the banks of the Moscow River next to the new building of the Russian Academy of Sciences Presidium. IBT is a non-profit scholarly organization with staff from different Christian traditions and denominations.
Partnership
IBT is a member of the International Forum of Bible Agencies (IFOBA). In some translation projects IBT partners with other international Bible translation agencies, such as United Bible Societies (UBS) , SIL International and the Pioneer Bible Translators (PBT) . In the countries of its activity IBT works in cooperation with churches and religious organizations of all Christian denominations, national Bible Societies, scientific institutions and with the state authorities.
Bible Translation
IBT strives to make accurate and faithful translations which reveal the message of the Bible to modern readers in their own languages. IBT’s office in Moscow coordinates the work of 65 translation projects . Translation team members live in different cities and countries, but at certain stages of their work it is necessary for them to meet and work together. In addition to coordinating and administering the work of Bible translation, the office also holds seminars for translators and exegetical checkers. There are usually three such seminars each year. In addition to its Bible publications, IBT also produces Scripture books for children, Bible reference works and scientific materials related to the receptor languages.
IBT publishes quality editions appropriate for a book’s content and readers’ expectations. The Moscow office prepares the translated Bible texts for publishing. The staff is involved in typesetting, illustrations, maps and cover design. In addition, technical assistance, such as computer hardware and software support, font problems, etc., is provided by Moscow office staff to translators in the field. IBT maintains contacts with printing houses in Russia and abroad.
Distribution, Information and PR
IBT coordinates the distribution of the published editions through cooperation with distribution partners - churches of all denominations, libraries, educational and scientific institutions, IBT organizes presentations of its publications, issues a Newsletter in English and German and publishes the "News of Bible Translation" information bulletin in Russian.
IBT Russia/CIS is a non-profit organization financed through charity donations and contributions from individuals, organizations & foundations .
