PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 Prologue - INEOS big favourites for tricky time-trial

The race organizers have brought the race back and with a completely different face. This is a Tour Down Under unlike any other in recent years, with a new set of stages. To begin with immediately, the riders have a 5.5-kilometer prologue in Adelaide which will set the first differences and make for an exciting day of racing.

The route will be just north of the center of the Aussie city. It's a fast prologue, it features a few corners but none will truly be tight. It isn't exactly perfect for the purists because of that, however we shouldn't see any major surprises.

The Weather

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 Prologue - INEOS big favourites for tricky time-trial

PREVIEW | Tour Down Under 2023 - World Tour returns to racing in Australia with star-studded field

Over 30 degrees in temperature despite being late in the afternoon. Away from the city center the heat won't be as strong but when a race will be decided by so little everything counts. There will be meaningfully strong wind from the south, mostly making for a tail-crosswind start and head-crosswind finish, meaning pacing will be even more crucial.

The Favourites

The riders won't have their traditional time-trial bikes here in Adelaide, but will instead race the prologue with their road bikes. This will chance things in relation to a normal time-trial where the riders who've worked hard to dial their positions, and the teams who've worked the most on their bikes, will not have the same advantage.

Instead it will be a more unpredictable day of racing, where form and pure power will matter the most. 5.5 kilometers is enough to see those who have the best legs stand apart. The specialists include Ethan Hayter , Magnus Sheffield , Rohan Dennis and Luke Plapp who will be the main favourites to take it on the day.

Chris Froome: "I don't have any plans to stop any time soon"

INEOS Grenadiers have the upper hand when it comes to taking the opening ochre jersey, having Geraint Thomas aswell as a possibility - although his form is unlikely to be as good. Like him however other stage-racers or puncheurs who should fight for GC have the chance to be in the mix such as Simon Yates , Max Schachmann , Alberto Bettiol , Patrick Bevin , Antonio Tiberi , Jay Vine and Pello Bilbao .

On the other hand some of the fast men may also be within a shot of a result. After all the course will be relatively short and there are some that stand apart from the typical pure sprinter. Michael Matthews is definitely an option. Jannik Steimle , Miles Scotson , Michael Hepburn , Luke Durbridge and Jos van Emden also fit the picture as time-trialists.

Geraint Thomas plays down Tour Down Under ambitions - "I’ve been on antibiotics and I’ve missed a few days training"

3ᵉ étape Tour Down Under : Sam Welsford double la mise

South Australia ready for the 2024 Santos Tour Down Under

Australia’s greatest cycling race, the santos tour down under, gets underway on friday with organisers and south australian businesses gearing up for 10 days of elite racing and festivities..

The benefit of this world class major event is being felt across wider metropolitan Adelaide, with hotel forward bookings indicating there are already more than 65,000 rooms booked over the 10 days of the Santos Tour Down Under.

While the finishing touches are being put on the City of Adelaide Tour Village in Victoria Square/Tartanyangga, a massive logistical exercise is also underway at Hilton Adelaide, a Tour Down Under sponsor since 1999.

Teams from around the world have descended on Adelaide, filling the Hilton Adelaide and seeing staff working around the clock to accommodate the elite athletes and their support crews. The 15 Hilton hotel chefs prepare three meals each day, serving in excess of 15000 meals across the event.

The women’s race is the first race of the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) WorldTour season, with the Women’s Ziptrak Stage 1 beginning at Hahndorf on Friday at 11.10am.

The race will honour Olympic cycling champion, Melissa Hoskins, who tragically died on December 30 with a minute’s silence ahead of the stage start.

Taking in 93km of the picturesque Adelaide Hills, the women will race through Echunga, Balhannah, Woodside and Lobethal with the finish line in Campbelltown.

As always, Adelaide has rolled out the welcome mat to the visiting international and local cyclists and the thousands of fans who line the stage routes.

The Santos Tour Down Under also offers a wide range of associated events, including participation rides for children and adults, street parties and free activity and entry to the City of Adelaide Tour Village.

The men’s curtain-raising ride, the Down Under Classic will have the City of Adelaide Tour Village as a backdrop, starting on Wakefield Street at 7.10pm on Saturday 13 January.

All eyes will be on Tanunda on Tuesday 16 January for the Men’s Ziptrak Stage 1 race.

New features in 2024 include RADL GRVL, a pilot gravel race organised by Valtteri Bottas, Formula 1 Driver and his partner Tiffany Cromwell, professional Adelaide cyclist.

Murray Bridge will host the start of the Hahn Stage 4, highlighting the Murray River and the region’s ongoing flood recovery, and Port Elliot will host its first ever finish on Stage 4.

Last year the race was shown in 190 international territories and reached 2.7 million Australians.

We are excited to welcome athletes, cycling fans and spectators to the 2024 Santos Tour Down Under.

Major events like this put South Australia in the international spotlight and showcase our beautiful state to the world while boosting South Australian businesses.

Last year this world-class event injected $66.5 million into South Australia’s economy and created 776 full-time equivalent jobs.

South Australia’s events calendar highlights the State Government’s commitment to drive visitation and support the visitor economy. We’ve begun the year with record-breaking international tennis and now we are excited to host this world-class cycling event before AFL Gather Round, LIV Golf, Tasting Australia and more still to come.

I would also like to take this opportunity to join the cycling community in mourning the loss of Melissa Hoskins and extend my thoughts and sincere condolences to her family. Melissa’s contribution to the sport was immense.

Hilton Adelaide is absolutely thrilled to once again be a key partner of the Santos Tour Down Under.

We are extremely proud to continue our enduring partnership with the event since its inception in 1999. Embracing the title of the ‘home’ of the tour, we joyfully welcome riders and fans from around the globe, offering them a true home away from home during this spectacular event.

This year promises to be the grandest and most exhilarating yet, with both men’s and women’s events converging under our roof. Anticipation is building, and we can hardly contain our enthusiasm for the annual takeover. This extraordinary event brilliantly showcases the beauty of our state to the world!

'A lot to play for' as Ineos Grenadiers start Hayter's Tour Down Under pursuit

Sheffield in second, Hayter and Plapp both within 20 seconds of leader Bettiol

British champion Ethan Hayter in the Tour Down Under prologue

The opening prologue of the Santos Tour Down Under was far from a straightforward affair, with rain adding another layer of difficulty to the already technical 5.5km course, but Ineos Grenadiers emerged with a podium placing and two more riders within the top 25. Importantly, amongst them was the squad's GC hope, Ethan Hayter .

The 24-year-old who won last year's Tour de Pologne and the Tour de Romandie prologue in Lausanne was the last of the Ineos Grenadiers riders to set off. Conditions had become wet after the start, giving the ultimate winner Alberto Bettiol a considerable advantage over many of his rivals.

Hayter was the last of the Ineos Grenadiers riders on the course, setting off in drizzly conditions to finish in 21st.

However, he said, "there's still five days of racing left so a lot to play for. It was drizzly when I sat on the chairs at the start and it was sort of damp for everybody. To be honest I had this crash in Mallorca a couple of weeks ago and I didn't take any risks at all."

Even then, Hayter was just 19 seconds back from Bettiol and ahead of many of his potential rivals.

"I think it is not a bad start, Magnus was second, and me and Plappy were up there," Hayter said.

Magnus Sheffield had to cope with the damp conditions, and although the rain may have stopped as the searing heat of earlier in the day gave way to overcast conditions, there was an early warning shot to remind him to be wary.

"Even before going off the ramp my rear wheel slipped but I knew I just had to keep my eyes open and look at the corners throughout the race," Sheffield told Cyclingnews . "I was really just trying to see through the corners – how they looked and find the dry spots.

"Mostly I found the entry of the corners were quite wet but the exits were still drying up just as I was going out on the course, but I knew I wanted to stay upright because it's a long week but I also really wanted to go for the win."

Staying upright, was of course, also a big consideration for the rest of the squad as they raced along the riverside in Adelaide's central business district.

"I'm as happy as you can be in these conditions," Luke Plapp told Cyclingnews , still breathing heavily with sweat and rain running down his face after finishing 24th at 20 seconds." The technical aspects definitely aren't my strongest points and in the wet, you've got to be a bit careful. But look I'm happy as I can be. It's up there in these conditions."

But being "up there' however is not Plapp's first consideration at the race.

"At the end of the day we are here to win the race for Ethan," Plapp said. "He is definitely our man and on paper, he is going to go the best. We are all in as a team for the common goal and that is to win GC obviously.

"I'd love to do well myself and if I could have an individual result as well that would be amazing but Ethan is one of my best mates and I'd love nothing more than to see him win here in Australia."
