Joshua Bell
With a career spanning almost four decades, GRAMMY® Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated artists of his era. Bell has performed with virtually every major orchestra in the world, and continues to maintain engagements as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, conductor and as the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
Bell’s highlights in the 2023-24 season include an international tour of his newly-commissioned project, The Elements, featuring works by renowned composers representing each of the five elements. Composers include Jake Heggie (Fire), Jennifer Higdon (Air), Edgar Meyer (Water), Jessie Montgomery (Space), and Kevin Puts (Earth). The work will receive its premiere performances with the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Hong Kong Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Bell will also release his new album on Sony Classical, Butterfly Lovers , in summer 2023. The record features the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao, newly arranged for a traditional Chinese orchestra conducted by Tsung Yeh. Bell will also lead the Academy of St Martin in the Fields on tour in Australia and throughout the United States. Bell appears as artist-in-residence this season with the NDR Elbphilharmonie, and as guest artist with the New Jersey Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and more.
In 2011, Bell was named Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, succeeding Sir Neville Marriner, who formed the orchestra in 1959. Bell’s history with the Academy dates to 1986, when he first recorded the Bruch and Mendelssohn concertos with Marriner and the orchestra. Bell has since led the orchestra on several albums including Beethoven’s Fourth and Seventh Symphonies, an all-Bach album, For the Love of Brahms , and, most recently, Bruch: Scottish Fantasy, which was nominated for a 2019 GRAMMY® Award.
In summer 2020, PBS presented Joshua Bell: At Home With Music , a nationwide broadcast produced entirely in lockdown, by Tony and Emmy Award-winning director Dori Berinstein. The program included core classical repertoire as well as new arrangements of beloved works, including a West Side Story medley. The special featured guest artists Larisa Martínez, Jeremy Denk, Peter Dugan, and Kamal Khan. In August 2020, Sony Classical released the companion album to the special, Joshua Bell: At Home With Music (Live) .
Bell has commissioned and premiered new works by John Corigliano, Edgar Meyer, Behzad Ranjbaran and Nicholas Maw, and his recording of Maw’s violin concerto received a GRAMMY® award.
Bell has collaborated with peers including Renée Fleming, Chick Corea, Regina Spektor, Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Anoushka Shankar, Frankie Moreno, Josh Groban, and Sting, among others. In 2019, Bell joined his longtime friends and musical partners, cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Jeremy Denk, for a ten-city American trio tour; the trio also recorded Mendelssohn’s piano trios at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, slated for release next season.
In 1998, Bell worked with composer John Corigliano on recording the film soundtrack for The Red Violin , which elevated Bell to a household name and garnered Corigliano an Academy Award. Since then, Bell has appeared on several other film soundtracks, including Ladies in Lavender (2004) and Defiance (2008). Bell commemorated the 20th anniversary of The Red Violin (1998) in 2018-19, bringing the film with live orchestra to various festivals and the New York Philharmonic.
Bell has also appeared three times as a guest star on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and made numerous appearances on the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle . Bell is also featured on six Live From Lincoln Center specials, as well as a PBS Great Performances episode, “Joshua Bell: West Side Story in Central Park.”
In 2021, Bell announced his new partnership with Trala, the tech-powered violin learning app. Bell maintains active involvement with Education Through Music and Turnaround Arts, and in 2014, Bell mentored and performed alongside National YoungArts Foundation string musicians in an HBO Family Documentary special, Joshua Bell: A YoungArts Masterclass . Bell received the 2019 Glashütte Original MusicFestivalAward, presented in conjunction with the Dresden Music Festival, for his commitment to arts education.
Bell’s ongoing partnership with Embertone, the leading virtual instrument sampling company, on the Joshua Bell Virtual Violin, a sampler created for producers, engineers, artists, and composers, is widely considered the best virtual instrument of its kind. Bell also collaborated on the Joshua Bell VR experience with Sony PlayStation 4 VR, which features Bell performing with pianist Sam Haywood in full 360-degrees VR.
As an exclusive Sony Classical artist, Bell has recorded more than 40 albums, garnering GRAMMY®, Mercury®, Gramophone and OPUS KLASSIK awards. Bell’s 2019 Amazon Originals Chopin Nocturne arrangement was the first classical release of its kind on Amazon Music . Bell’s 2016 release, For the Love of Brahms , features recordings with the Academy, Steven Isserlis, and Jeremy Denk. Bell’s 2013 album with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, featuring Bell directing Beethoven’s Fourth and Seventh symphonies, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
In 2007, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post story, centered on Bell performing incognito in a Washington, D.C. metro station, sparked an ongoing conversation regarding artistic reception. The feature inspired Kathy Stinson’s 2013 children’s book, The Man With The Violin , and an animated film with music by Academy Award-winning composer Anne Dudley. Stinson’s subsequent 2017 book, Dance With The Violin , illustrated by Dušan Petričić, offers a glimpse into one of Bell’s competition experiences at age 12. Bell debuted The Man With The Violin festival at the Kennedy Center in 2017, and, in March 2019, presented a Man With The Violin family concert with the Seattle Symphony.
Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Bell began playing the violin at age four, and at age twelve, began studies with his mentor, Josef Gingold. At age 14, Bell debuted with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 17 with the St. Louis Symphony. At age 18, Bell signed with his first label, London Decca, and received the Avery Fisher Career Grant. In the years following, Bell has been nominated for six GRAMMY® awards, named “Instrumentalist of the Year” by Musical America, deemed a “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum, and received the Avery Fisher Prize. He has also received the 2003 Indiana Governor’s Arts Award and a Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1991 from the Jacobs School of Music. In 2000, he was named an “Indiana Living Legend.”
Bell has performed for three American presidents and the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. He participated in former president Barack Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities’ first cultural mission to Cuba, joining Cuban and American musicians on an Emmy-nominated PBS Live from Lincoln Center special; Joshua Bell: Seasons of Cuba , celebrating renewed cultural diplomacy between Cuba and the United States.

This month, Joshua Bell and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe tour Spain and Germany with works by Beethoven and Brahms, stopping in Murcia ( April 23 ), Zaragoza ( April 24 ), and Ludwigsburg ( April 26 ).
In May, Bell joins forces with Larisa Martínez and Peter Dugan to bring their Voice & the Violin program to Costa Mesa ( May 5 ) followed by a recital with Bell and Dugan celebrating the 5th Anniversary of The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla ( May 6 ). Performances of Voice & the Violin continue in Lincoln, Nebraska ( May 9 ), Scottsdale, Arizona ( May 11 ), and Princeton, New Jersey ( May 28 ).
From May 16-18 , selections from Bell’s newly commissioned suite The Elements will be performed with the San Francisco Symphony. Conducted by Ryan Bancroft, the program includes the U.S. premiere of SF Symphony commission Alaraph ‘Ritus des Herzschlags’ by Unsuk Chin. Selections from The Elements receive performances at Kansas City Symphony on May 31-June 2 , and a one-night only performance with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra on June 8 .
In mid-June, the complete suite for violin and orchestra arrives at Chicago Symphony Orchestra ( June 13-15 ). The Elements features works by American composers Kevin Puts (Earth), Edgar Meyer (Water), Jennifer Higdon (Air), Jake Heggie (Fire) and CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery (Space). Additional performances of The Elements follow at Seattle Symphony ( June 20 and 22 ).
Joshua Bell’s newly commissioned suite The Elements for violin and orchestra is a major highlight of his 2023/24 season, during which Bell will perform the piece with the world’s foremost orchestras and conductors. With five distinct movements by Jake Heggie (Fire), Jennifer Higdon (Air), Edgar Meyer (Water), Jessie Montgomery (Space) and Kevin Puts (Earth), the work draws inspiration from the five classical elements and the need to preserve the beauty of our natural world.
Following workshop previews at the Colorado Music Festival conducted by Peter Oundjian ( August 3 & 6 ), the piece received its official world premiere with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra conducted by Alan Gilbert September 1 -2 . The Asian premiere took place September 8-9 with the Hong Kong Philharmonic conducted by Jaap van Zweden, who also conducted the North American premiere with the New York Philharmonic September 29-October 1 . Peter Oundjian returned to the podium on October 25 to conduct a performance with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
The initial performances were universally acclaimed by the press.
“Even for composers known for their way with a lyrical line and satisfying harmonies, the fit between the movements was remarkable. Each was imaginative and distinctive while also flowing naturally from one to the other…Bell playing with his typical singing tone, with long, elegant phrases even in the fastest music. Though new, [the piece] seemed well-worn and comfortable for Bell and the musicians, with classic pleasures for the listener.” — The Financial Times
“…The Asian premiere of The Elements on Saturday was special. Conceived by American star violinist Joshua Bell early on in the coronavirus pandemic and commissioned from five contemporary US composers, it celebrates the five elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. With Bell as soloist in his own commission, there were neither bells nor whistles.” — South China Post
“The incredibly, sometimes almost intangibly brilliant, star violinist Joshua Bell presented the world premiere of “The Elements” with Gilbert and the orchestra, the composition of which he himself initiated by five leading US composers in 2019-23. The entire work was harmoniously, melodically and poignantly sensitive…” — Die Welt
Additional performances include complete performances the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Juraj Valčuha ( June 13-15 ), the Seattle Symphony conducted by Peter Oundjian ( June 20 & 22 ), and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gianandrea Noseda next season. Selections will also be performed by the San Francisco Symphony ( May 16–18 ) and the Kansas City Symphony ( May 31–June 2 ).
Learn more about The Elements .
Joshua Bell has extended his contract as Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) for a further four seasons through August 2028, reasserting his commitment to the orchestra he has led since 2011.
The announcement came during a week-long celebration of the centenary of ASMF’s founder, Sir Neville Marriner. Across three concerts, Joshua Bell directs the orchestra from the violin in performances of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 in G Minor (Monday 15 April, St Martin-in-the-Fields), Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-Flat Major (Tuesday 16 April, Wigmore Hall), the European premiere of Vince Mendoza’s Flight of Moving Days (commissioned by ASMF) and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 (Thursday 18 April, Royal Festival Hall).
Speaking about the announcement, Joshua Bell said:
“I am delighted to be extending my contract as Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for another four seasons. My work with the ASMF has enriched my life in countless ways and I love them not only as one of the great orchestras of the world, but as a group of extraordinary individuals.
“It is an honour to announce this extension during the centenary celebration of Sir Neville Marriner, a man who not only helped launch my own recording career but who, over the course of half a century, fostered the Academy’s exceptional standard of excellence in orchestral playing that I strive to uphold today. I am excited to continue my work with this treasured orchestra, and look forward to many more exciting and ambitious projects.”
Tom Lessells, ASMF clarinettist and Player Director, says:
“The Academy of St Martin in the Fields has been used to playing unconducted for a long time, but with Joshua leading us from within we have a recipe that results in concerts of unparalleled vitality and virtuosity.
“He demands the same unrelenting levels of focus and commitment of us that have long been a hallmark of his own playing and, without exception, we leave the stage feeling that we have given a performance as if our lives depended on it. This approach allows audience and players alike to depart with the impression of hearing familiar music afresh and as if for the first time.
“He challenges us to listen harder and work harder, but is also incredibly generous as both a musician and person, and we are all stronger and more fulfilled musicians as a result.
“In the 13 years since Joshua joined the ASMF family, his leadership has elevated our understanding of orchestral playing, our abilities as a collective ensemble and our international standing to new heights. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter in our relationship holds!”
Annie Lydford, Chief Executive of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, says:
“It has been extremely inspiring to work with Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields these last two seasons. Joshua has a deep understanding of the DNA of this orchestra and its musicians, and the performances that they create together are second to none. There isn’t another artist who is better placed to continue to inspire and challenge us, and who can combine exquisite solo playing with directing such a range of music – from Bach to Brahms and Mozart to Mendoza – in the way that Joshua does. As a touring orchestra, we travel extensively with our Music Director, and the long-held relationship between Joshua and our players sits at the heart of this successful partnership. I am so pleased that we will continue our work with Joshua, who is not only this orchestra’s great artistic leader and champion, but also its friend.”

Joshua Bell Concert Tickets
Get your Joshua Bell tickets to witness the talents of one of the world’s top classical violinists. First emerging as an energetic child prodigy in the late 1980s, Joshua Bell soon established himself as one of the most gifted virtuosos of his generation, earning the nickname "the poet of the violin" thanks to his elegant style and daring, free-wheeling approach to music. Born in Bloomington, Indiana, he first showed a love of music as a toddler when he would stretch elastic bands over his dresser drawer handles and start plucking away, trying to imitate his mother's piano playing. His parents bought him his first violin at the age of four and the naturally gifted learner flourished under the mentorship of master violinist Josef Gingold as he began appearing as a soloist with the world's great orchestras by the time he was 14.
Three years later he made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall and the teenage starlet became a bona fide classical superstar with stunning renditions of works by Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, releasing his first album of Bruch and Mendelssohn concertos through London Records in 1989. Alongside mastering a classic repertoire of Debussy, Franck and Prokofiev, he also performed contemporary pieces by Aaron Kay Kernis, Edgar Meyer and Jay Greenberg and featured on the Academy Award-winning soundtrack to the movie The Red Violin in 1998. He won his first Grammy Award in 2000 for his recording of Nicholas Maw's specially written concerto, and in 2001 purchased the legendary Gibson ex-Huberman Stradivarius violin for $4million, making his first recording with the 300-year-old instrument on The Romance of the Violin .
Other stand-out albums include Lalo: Symphonie Espagnole in 2005, Vivaldi: The Four Seasons in 2008 and At Home With Friends in 2009, which featured collaborations with an eclectic range of singers including Sting, Regina Spector and Kristin Chenoweth . Continuing to lead a diverse, genre-hopping career, Bell became musical director of the Academy of St Martins-in-the-Fields chamber orchestra, appeared on Sesame Street and accompanied actress Scarlett Johansson on the song “Before My Time” for the documentary Chasing Ice . Witness this multifaceted musician live in concert by ordering your Joshua Bell tickets today.

Performance Details
Christoph Eschenbach Conductor Joshua Bell Violin
Chausson Poème , for violin and orchestra Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto No. 5 Brahms Symphony No. 1
Program Notes
One of the most celebrated violinists of his era, Joshua Bell made his Philadelphia Orchestra debut at 14. His Carnegie Hall debut followed at age 17, launching a career that has embraced dozens of recordings, a shelf full of awards including a GRAMMY®, and performances that have taken him from the White House to Hollywood, where he collaborated on film scores including The Red Violin and Angels & Demons .
In this program, Bell performs two of the most heartbreakingly romantic works in the repertoire. Ernest Chausson’s Poème, based on a Turgenev short story of two men who love the same woman, her choice, and the aftermath, is a story of repressed passion whose depths can only be communicated through the playing of the rejected lover’s violin. Bell follows this classic with another romantic piece, Henri Vieuxtemps’s Fifth Violin Concerto tugs at the heartstrings from the first entry of the violin soloist and from there takes the listener on thrill ride of emotion. It takes the player on a thrill ride as well; originally composed as a contest piece, it covers the entire range of the fingerboard and summons every skill of the virtuoso. Heady stuff, and the perfect showcase for a violinist whose tone has been described as “flowing like liquid silver” ( Bachtrack ).
This feast of Romantic music closes with Johannes Brahms’s First Symphony, which took him 14 years to compose—writing, tearing it up, and writing again. Filled with lovely melodies, evocative soundscapes, and the “autumnal mood” that would color many of Brahms’s works, the Symphony is lush, dramatic, and romantic in every sense of the word.

Joshua Bell Leads the New Jersey Symphony
New jersey symphony classical, concert information.
Estimated Concert Duration: 1 hour and 40 minutes
Joshua Bell conductor and violin New Jersey Symphony
When needing an example of “genius,” look no further than this astounding product of a 17-year-old boy. Here are the lovers, the silliness and the quicksilver humor of Shakespeare’s comedy delivered in a dozen minutes of utter brilliance.
The violin leads the drama from the first bar of Mendelssohn’s masterpiece, but here too are moments of hold-your-breath beauty. These shimmer like moonlight on water when played by Joshua Bell, one of the world’s finest violinists.
He could stir up musical storm clouds like a god, but Beethoven also could part them to let the most brilliant sunlight warm the soul. The Fourth is the composer at his sunniest, and Joshua Bell, violin still in hand, leads the New Jersey Symphony from the concertmaster’s seat.

Preview of Joshua Bassett’s Upcoming Track ‘The Golden Years’ Released – Hear the Sneak Peek! | Joshua Bassett, Music | Just Jared: Celebrity News and Gossip
Excitement abounds as Joshua Bassett provides a taste of his latest musical endeavor!
The 23-year-old artist and actor, known for his role in Disney’s productions, has released a preview of new music for the first time in half a year.
His most recent release before this was a track titled “Just Love” , which came out in September 2023.
This Wednesday (May 1) marks the occasion as Joshua introduces the forthcoming month by sharing a video snippet set at the seashore, where he vocalizes parts of “The Golden Years,” a song listeners might recall from his previous tour.
The lyrics, “Four years gone by in the blink of an eye / we were young till we weren’t / it was fun till it hurt / now I’m terrified that I’ll never find love like yours,” echo in Joshua ’s voice.
A fan highlighted that over four years have elapsed since Joshua’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series debut, concluding in 2023 after a four-season run on Disney+.
While the song’s official release date remains under wraps, fans are encouraged to keep their ears open for updates.
In a related note, Joshua secured an Emmy win in December 2023 at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards . He received the accolade for Outstanding Original Song for a Children’s or Young Teen Program for “Finally Free,” a tune he co-penned for HSMTMTS season three.
The name of the new single is “The Golden Years.”
It has been over six months since his last music release, which was the song “Just Love”.
The four-year period mentioned in “The Golden Years” potentially alludes to the time since the premiere of Joshua’s show “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” which lasted four seasons.
Yes, Joshua Bassett won an Emmy in December 2023 for Outstanding Original Song for a Children’s or Young Teen Program for “Finally Free.”
The official release date for “The Golden Years” has not been announced yet.
Fans of Joshua Bassett are buzzing with anticipation as the artist teases his forthcoming track, “The Golden Years,” a nostalgic and emotive song that harkens back to his time on “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.” Although an official release date is still pending, the snippet has already resonated with listeners, promising another heartfelt tune from the acclaimed young talent. As followers of his burgeoning music career await further details with bated breath, Joshua’s recent Emmy victory serves as a testament to his musical prowess and the impactful storytelling found within his compositions.
