Ratings and Reviews

Not too friendly
The app needs to be more intuitive and easier to work with.
Slow, unresponsive and STILL poorly designed
The app is such a disappointment, still. I’m writing this review while currently on Grandeur of the Seas, and yes it’s understandable that the wifi infrastructure might have issues on an older ship, how the app handles connection issues and slow data is really really frustrating. Chat is possibly the most important function, and it fails to load, and has a confusing UI. Please get some a smart designer to rethink it. The schedule is the next most important thing, the drawer is slow to respond when tapped, doesn’t have search, and is frequently missing the latest information and has them making announcements over the ship intercom telling everyone to force reload the app to get up to date information? Awful. Although it seems “pretty” when you first look at it, the UX and speed of the app is a disaster. Function and speed need work. I want to apply to work at RCI to help the app team fix this thing it’s so frustrating.
Terrible messaging
Ok to check in and get some information. Difficult to find some other information on app. Poorly laid out. Must be connected to internet to get information. Messaging app doesn’t work very well. Needs push notifications and badges to alert new massages. App seems to be buggy and in beta. But it’s required. Needs work.

Royal Caribbean crew member accused of installing hidden cameras in guest bathrooms
Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, was arrested Sunday after a guest found a camera inside her stateroom bathroom while on the Symphony of the Seas cruise.
By Kristina Bugante • Published March 4, 2024 • Updated on March 5, 2024 at 8:21 pm
An employee of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship has been arrested and accused of setting up hidden cameras inside cruise passengers' bathrooms.
The guest, who was staying in the room with her sister and mom, said she reached under the sink to get a roll of toilet paper on Feb. 26 when she found the camera affixed to the counter and alerted security officers, an arrest affidavit from the Broward Sheriff's Office stated.

Mirasol worked as a stateroom attendant and was responsible for servicing guest cabins, including cleaning, restocking towels and making beds.
Authorities seized his electronic devices, including his phone and USB, and found numerous videos of naked females undressing in bathrooms as well as child pornography, an affidavit stated. One video showed Mirasol himself installing the camera.
Mirasol told law enforcement in an interview that he installed the cameras and had been doing so since he started working on the Symphony of the Seas cruise in December 2023.

"I want to control it, but I can't," Mirasol told investigators, according to the affidavit. He also admitted that if he likes whoever is staying in the room, he installs the cameras and chooses girls 16 years old and over, the affidavit read.

Mirasol also said he would hide under guests' beds while they took showers and record them naked.
"We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior," Royal Caribbean said in a statement. "We immediately reported this to law enforcement and terminated the crew member, and we will continue to fully cooperate with authorities."
Mirasol faces six counts of video voyeurism and one count of possession of child pornography. He is currently booked in BSO's main jail.

Cruise Like a Pro: Royal Caribbean Tips Every First-Time Family Needs
Embarking on your first cruise can be thrilling yet overwhelming, especially when planning a family vacation. Royal Caribbean is a fantastic choice for families, offering a wide range of activities and amenities designed to keep everyone entertained. To help you navigate your first Royal Caribbean adventure like a pro, we’ve compiled a list of essential tips for first time cruisers to ensure your trip is smooth sailing from start to finish. Get ready for a boatload of fun (pun absolutely intended).
1. Book Early for the Best Deals and Cabins
Gone are the days of those ultra-low last-minute cruise fares. Ships are sailing at full capacity and waiting to snag a deal is no longer the best strategy. If you wait too long, the cruise may sell out. Instead, book your cruise well in advance. You’ll have the best selection of cabins. And first dibs on the cool kids’ perks, like free kids’ fares or discounts—which Royal Caribbean is known to offer! Plus, booking early means all the excursions and ship extras won’t be sold out.
How far in advance should you book a Royal Caribbean cruise for the best price?
You should book your cruise 6-12 months in advance for the best price. Prices may rise as sailings fill up, so generally earlier is better. Keep an eye out for special promos, such as kids sail free, and take advantage of them when available. These deals and promos can save you a lot of money.
2. Choose the Right Ship for Your Family
Royal Caribbean’s fleet is like a choose-your-own-adventure book. For rock climbing, ice skating, and skydiving simulators, go big with an Oasis or Quantum-class ship. To experience the largest waterpark at sea and the largest cruise ship in the world, splurge on the Icon of the Seas. Smaller ships might be cozier but could lack some epic amenities, aka the epic pool slide. Research different ships to find one that matches your family’s interests and budget.
If you aren’t sure which ship it right for you, The Points Guy put together a handy guide breaking down Royal Caribbean’s different classes .
3. Download the Royal Caribbean App— Your New Best Friend
The Royal Caribbean app is a game-changer and as a first-time cruiser, it can be your biggest asset. The app allows you to manage your itinerary, make reservations, and check out dining menus. Use it to book activities like ice skating or rock climbing as they become available, and to stay updated on daily events. The Royal Caribbean app is completely free and only requires a connection to the ship’s Wi-Fi.
4. Pack for Formal and Theme Nights
Formal nights.
Check how many formal nights your cruise will have and plan your outfits accordingly.
Here’s what Royal Caribbean has to say about their formal night dress code:
Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. There can be 1-3 formal nights during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.
In reality, you’ll see a little bit of everything – people dressed to the nines in tuxedos and evening gowns, summer maxi dresses, khakis, buttoned down shirts.
If you welcome the opportunity to go big, by all means. But don’t put too much pressure on the formal night outfit. It’s a pain in the ass to pack a garment bag, especially with all the kid things you have to bring. Just sayin’.
Theme Nights
Your cruise will likely also have theme nights. In order to find the theme nights on your cruise – join a Facebook group for your specific cruise or the ship. It’s usually discussed in those groups.
Common theme nights may include Black & White, 70s, 80s, or Caribbean. Optional of course, but always fun to join in.
5. Arrive a Day Early (At Least!)
Nothing ruins a vacation faster than missing the ship. You’ve probably heard horror stories of delayed flights or cancellations that caused someone to miss sail away. Don’t put yourself through that. Arrive at the port city the day before or even two days before. It will give you some serious peace of mind.
6. Bring Your Own Refillable Water Bottles
It’s much easier to stay hydrated when your bottle is within arms reach. If you get a beverage package, water bottles are included. But refillable water bottles are more eco-friendly and convenient. Water machine cups are small. And I don’t know about you, but it requires some serious activation energy to get out of the pool for a water refill.
We never leave home without our Yetis – they keep water colder than anything we’ve ever tried. It doesn’t hurt that they also make a kids yeti .
You’ll likely be in the sun often and getting dehydrated is easy. Drink up to stay healthy. Plus, it’s an excellent way to smuggle your daiquiri into port. (Just kidding, don’t do that.)
7. Pack Magnetic Hooks
Many first-time cruisers don’t know the walls are magnetic until they get there. But Magnetic hooks are a must. Cabin walls are metal on Royal Caribbean ships. Use this to your advantage and create extra storage space. Hang bags, hats, swimsuits, whatever. They entertain kids. They double as a place to hang a shower curtain for a makeshift wall. There’s really no downside here folks. Best $8 you’ll ever spend. Just make sure you get the heavy duty ones !
8. Book Excursions and Activities Early
Full capacity ships also means excursions are selling out early these days. So if you have your sights set on swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, snap it up early. This also extends to onboard activities that may require advance reservations – spa visits, specialty dining, ship tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, escape room, and so on.
Some activities are free, but require a reservation. Reservations will pop up for various activities like rock climbing or laser tag. Sign up as soon as you see those slots before they fill up.
9. Sign Up For Kids’ Clubs ASAP
Register your kids for the kids’ clubs as soon as you board to avoid lines later in the day. For babysitting specifically (infant age), the time slots fill up fast. If that’s a service you’re planning to utilize, reserve a time early.
Be sure to check the Royal Caribbean app for a list of kids club activities. That way your little ones can pick and choose.
10. Complete Check In As Soon As It Becomes Available For Your Cruise
We all want to be first in the pool sipping on a cold Pina Colada. Royal Caribbean operates on a timed boarding process. They will give you a scheduled arrival time and this is when you show up to the cruise terminal on your sail date. For instance, if you are given an arrival time 12pm – 1pm, you’ll be able to start the boarding process at this time (which includes security and document checks).
How early can you check-in on a Royal Caribbean cruise?
Online check in through Royal Caribbean’s website and app will be available 45 days prior to sailing. During the check-in process you will be able to select your arrival time. If an arrival time fills up, it will not show up on the list and you will only be shown available arrival times. For that reason, it’s best to check in right when the window opens so you can select your optimal arrival time.
Pro Tip: hit the buffet right after boarding before it gets filled up.
11. Ducks and Door Decorations
How do you make your cruise vacation quirky? You add rubber ducks and door decorations. Really, this is a thing and people get way into it.
Hiding these little duckies around the ship is a fun cruising tradition. Many folks will bring rubber ducks to hide for their fellow cruisers to find. Make sure to add a little tag to let everyone know who it came from! Take things next level with an assortment of rubber duck styles , rubber ducks with sunglasses , or the trendy tiny ducks .
It’s a fun way for both kids and adults to pack even more fun into your cruise vacation.
As for your stateroom door, give it some personality with magnet decorations—a “splash” of color, a funny sign, a personalized design , or a duck-themed display . Get creative—people love to wander and look at all the personalized decor.
12. Choose Your Dining Time Early
Decide between “My Time” dining (flexible hours) or traditional dining (set times) early in the booking process. Much like everything else, times fill up early. If you have a preference, don’t hesitate!
What is the difference between my time dining and Traditional dining on Royal Caribbean?
My Time Dining is the flexible option. You won’t have an assigned time slot in the Main Dining Room. Instead, you show up anytime you would like during dining hours. If you opt for traditional dining, you’ll have the same table and same dining time for your entire sailing. The traditional dining times are typically 5:30 pm and 8 pm.
The benefit of traditional dining is that you’ll also have the same waitstaff for your entire cruise. Often you get to know each other and they learn your food preferences. The benefit of My Time dining is flexibility to show up whenever. If you want to spend more time in the pool – no rush to get to dinner.
While booking your cruise, you can select from My Time or Traditional Dining. If you go the traditional route, dining times can fill up and you may be left with early or late dining (whichever happens to be available).
13. Be Careful in the Arcade
Speaking from experience on this one. Your kid’s SeaPass card will be linked to your credit card, and that can be dangerous. There is an option to turn this off (highly recommend for littles). Or there is an option to set daily limits (also highly recommend for littles). You can do either through customer service.
If you keep your credit card connected to your kids’ SeaPass card, all they have to do is tap it on the machine for arcade games. Convenient, yes. Friendly on the wallet, no. Kids love to tap tap tap and it’s hard to track the charges racking up. So be careful and come up with a strategy.
14. Have a Plan For Messaging
Essential. If you and your cruise companions don’t have the internet package that is. How do you stay in touch after the ship departs and you lose cell service? Log on to the Royal Caribbean app. What time are you going to breakfast? Is the toddler asleep yet? Did Dad return the towels? It’s crucial for coordinating plans without cell service. Unless of course, you want some peace and quiet, in which case, carry on.
Can You text for free on Royal Caribbean?
Yes, the messaging feature on Royal Caribbean’s app is free to use. All you have to do is connect to ship wifi and you’ll be free to send each other messages.
15. Pack Medications You May Need
Cruise ships stock basic medications – Tylenol, cough syrup, Benedryl. But they are wildly expensive. And outside the basics, if you need anything you’ll have to see the onboard doctor (which can be expensive) or wait until you get to port. Pack any medications that you or your kids commonly take. You’ll be one step ahead if someone starts to feel a little under the weather.
16. Pack a Separate Bag For Embarkation Day
When you first board the ship, a porter will take your belongings and deliver them directly to your stateroom. You won’t see your bags until your cabin is ready (around 1 pm) or even slightly after. Pack a carry-on bag with the essentials for the first few hours of the cruise- swimsuits, sunscreen, phone charger, medications, etc.
17. Join a Facebook Group For Your Cruise
Search Facebook for a group dedicated to your cruise ship and dates. You’ll find valuable tips, meetups, and advice from seasoned cruisers. Here’s where you can ask all your burning questions.
You can also find more general Facebook groups for your ship. Here are a few popular pages for some of Royal Caribbean’s ships:
- Icon of the Sea s
- Odyssey of the Se as
- Anthem of the S eas
- Oasis of the Seas
- Harmony of the Seas
- Wonder of the Seas
- Independence of the Seas
This list only scratches the surface, but it should give you a good start.
Final Thoughts for Your Family Cruise
A Royal Caribbean cruise is what you make of it. Whether you want to relax by the pool, try every activity, or indulge in all the desserts, the key is to relax, have fun, and create lasting memories with your family.

1. Experience magical moments with Disney’s own cruise ship
Guess what? Starting late 2025, Disney Cruise Lines will be setting sail from its new homeport in Singapore. Imagine Disney’s world comes alive on the seas. From themed dining to captivating entertainment, it’s an experience that promises to thrill guests of all ages, including me.
Traveloka will start offering bookings for standard cruise passes on its app in the fourth quarter of 2024 . On top of that, it will also offer special packages tailored to Southeast Asian travellers.

On the ship, you can explore 7 different themed areas, each offering a unique Disney experience. Check out the live shows at Disney Imagination Garden or feel the energy at San Fransokyo Street, inspired by “Big Hero 6.” These areas are designed to spark joy and creativity, making sure there’s something fun for everyone to enjoy.
Ready to set sail? Prices are not yet finalised as of this time of writing, so it is better to check prices soon to secure bookings.

2. Go skydiving at sea with RipCord® by iFLY®
Ever wondered what it’s like to skydive but not quite ready to jump out of a plane? Check out RipCord® by iFLY® on Royal Caribbean ships. It’s this super fun skydiving simulator that lets you experience the thrill of freefall right on the deck. You step into a wind tunnel, and suddenly, you’re floating like you’re in the air.
It’s available on Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, so if you’re on those ships, definitely give it a try. The best part? If the ship is docked, you might get to try it for free.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Royal Caribbean Asia (@royalcaribbeanasia)
Before you jump into the skydiving simulator, make sure to remove any loose items like jewelry or phones, and wear comfy clothes with sneakers. It’s important to fit into the flight suit provided, and if you’re under 18, you’ll need a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
If you’re all about maximizing the fun, there’s an option for an Extended Flight Experience, which costs around S$64 per person (U$50.99 ). The price is based on the US market, but this will give you an idea how much you’ll pay for a level-up experience. Just a heads-up, you’ll need to do a quick training session to make sure you know how to position yourself safely.
Meanwhile, you’re in luck if you plan a trip later this year. The Anthem of the Seas will arrive in Singapore in November 2024, offering 3 to 10-night itineraries through Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
Here are the prices to help you plan your cruise ahead.
Want to try a skydiving simulator but don’t fancy a cruise? Check out iFly Sentosa Singapore for a freefall experience on land.
3. Glide through waterslides and enjoy aqua park amenities
So, if you’re thinking about taking a cruise from Singapore, then you can hop onto Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas or the Genting Dream from Resorts World Cruises, to experience the waterslides and aqua parks.
On the Anthem of the Seas , The H2O Zone Water Park features interactive geysers, climbable sculptures, pools, waterfalls, and more. It’s ideal for your little ones and even teens, making your family time more enjoyable. They can spend hours sliding down colourful tubes, playing in splash zones, and discovering waterfall features.
Meanwhile, the Ovation of the Seas , arriving in October 2025, offers Splashaway Bay —an aqua park with slides, water cannons, and waterfalls designed specifically for young adventurers.
If you’re a daredevil looking for adventurous water activities, then The Perfect Storm water slide and their 12m-long FlowRider surf simulator are must-try.
The Perfect Storm is actually a trifecta of 3 water slides aptly named after storms—Typhoon, Cyclone, and Supercell. You won’t always get all of them on every Royal Caribbean ship, and you may not always get the surf simulator the same way.
Here’s a summary of which vessels have which features:
The best news? The Perfect Storm and FlowRider surf simulator are both included in the room price. So as long as the cruise ship you’re on has these facilities, go ahead and knock yourself out on them (not literally)!
4. Marvel at panoramic sea views inside an observation capsule
Ever wanted to see the ocean from a whole new perspective? That’s what North Star® offers. It’s this cool glass capsule that lifts you over 100 metres above sea level on a mechanical arm.
You can find it on some Royal Caribbean ships like Anthem of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Spectrum of the Seas. It’s even in the Guinness World Records for being the tallest viewing deck on a cruise ship, and it fits up to 14 people.
Think of it like a mini Ferris wheel ride, but at sea, lasting around 15-20 minutes. The views are definitely Instagram-worthy, whether you’re looking at the ship below or the coastlines you pass by. If you’re planning to go during peak times like sunrise or sunset, it’s smart to book ahead through the Cruise Planner to avoid long waits.
Though if you’re doing something epic like cruising past Alaskan glaciers, it might cost a bit more. Keep this in mind when planning your trip, and get ready for some seriously amazing views.
5. Book a 2-storey family suite as your ultimate getaway
Staying in the Ultimate Family Suite is like having a mini amusement park right in your cabin. Imagine starting your day with a ride down your own private slide—that’s definitely not something you find every day. This suite is all about fun, with goodies like an air hockey table on the balcony and a game room where you can challenge your family to Connect-Four or table tennis.
You won’t need to wait in line for any of these activities. Everything is set up for instant fun. And when you need a break, you can kick back in your private cinema. It’s got comfy seating and great sound to make movie nights special.
Wondering how it stacks up against other cruise options? The Ultimate Family Suite is one of the biggest and most packed with features you’ll find on a cruise ship, so it does come with a big price. A 3-4 night stay in the suite is reported to cost S$22,000 – S$30,000 for a family of four . Not every cruise line has something quite like this, so if you’re into this level of family fun, it’s worth considering. This special suite is only available in Symphony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas, and Wonder of the Seas. A caution, though, for adults who want much of a privacy, the open layout of the suite may not be something you prefer when you want to make love and you’re tagging the kids along—unless you close the curtains and keep it quiet.
6. Soar like your superhero with a zipline experience
If you’re heading onto the Genting Dream, you’ve got to check out the zipline. It’s up on the top decks and stretches 35 metres over the water. Imagine cruising high above the sea with nothing but the beneath you.
You also need to be aleast 140 cm tall to join in on the fun. Also, make sure to wear some comfy clothes and definitely closed-toe shoes. It’ll help you move around easily and keep things safe while you’re up there.
7. Dare to climb and conquer the heights with ropelining
If you plan to try the ropelining on the Genting Dream, be prepared for a physically demanding adventure. The ropes course, which you must complete before reaching the zipline, will challenge your mind and body.
Make sure you wear your own shoes and comfortable clothes and go there late in the afternoon when there’s a shorter queue. You also don’t want to wait until evening, which could potentially rain—and you won’t enjoy much of the scenic views on top.
The 2-tier ropes course can be challenging, especially the higher tier that most adventurers opt for. The course tests your balance and strength, particularly the shaky platforms and the complex rope wall near the zipline starting point.
Don’t let fear of heights stop you from experiencing this—the crew is there to help you through the most challenging parts.
What could be more delightful than conquering your fears and challenging yourself?
8. Reach for the sky and test your limits on rock climbing walls
If ziplining, ropelining, and skydiving aren’t enough, you’d better include rock climbing walls when you’re on board a cruise ship—not everyday you find all these activities in 1 place and away from the shore.
Whether on the Genting Dream or Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas, you’ll be scaling the walls as if you’re Spiderman. So, don your helmet, harness, and wear your most comfortable clothes and tackle the 30-foot rock climbing wall on Quantum of the Seas. It’s perfect for all ages, with tracks designed for different experience levels.
On the Genting Dream, the challenge intensifies if you pair this with the 2-tiered ropes course leading to the zipline mentioned above. You’ll also receive an informative safety briefing before climbing.
9. Tee up together in the mini-golf course
Mini golf is a fantastic way to enjoy light-hearted competition and family fun while cruising. Both Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean offer this activity on their ships, including those departing from Singapore. On Carnival Splendor and Spectrum of the Seas , the mini-golf course is designed for bonding and fun.
There’s no need to aim for the perfect backswings, as you’ll have unique, fun elements like windmills, treasure chests, and cacti designed to challenge your putting skills. Perhaps some chipping techniques might be needed for those small barriers, but remember, this is nothing but a friendly game, not a match with Tiger Woods.
This activity is perfect for families looking to spend quality time together. Upon checking the cruise dates, the 16-night one-way ,“Carnival Journeys” cruise to Sydney is already sold out, which sailed last 24 August and will end on 9 September 2024.
Check out the other dates to book in advance next time.
10. Delight in world-class Broadway shows and theatrical performances
If you’re into live shows, you’ve got to check out the entertainment on Royal Caribbean cruises. Seriously, they have some amazing performances that are a must-see.
- Check out “We Will Rock You,” a fantastic show with 24 of Queen’s biggest hits.
- Experience a rock concert vibe with classics like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Are the Champions.”
- Don’t miss “Starwater,” an amazing blend of acrobatics, music, and special effects.
- Enjoy “Tuned to the Room,” a unique show that combines music and art with out-of-this-world technology.
- Watch “The Silk Road,” a show inspired by the historic trade route, mixing music, dance, and storytelling.
If you can, try to book your show seats before you even get on the ship—spots fill up fast, and you don’t want to miss out. You can usually do this using the Royal Caribbean app or their website. Once you’re onboard, even if you’ve reserved, arriving really early can score you a better seat and let you enjoy the vibe before the show kicks off. And hey, keep an open mind—some shows might surprise you and become new favourites.
How do I save money on Singapore cruises?
Of course, just like anything else you shop for online, you must watch out for flash deals when booking a cruise. Aside from the limited-time offers, here are some tips to save money:
We’ve found that you can get the cheapest cruise fares if you:
- Book well in advance. We’re talking about departure dates a year or more in advance.
- Be flexible with dates. Not all dates are equal, and prices can vary tremendously, even during the holidays. Avoid the school holidays, or you’ll pay more.
- Check out the competition. Royal Caribbean may be one of the most well-known cruise operators but don’t forget there are others too. It doesn’t hurt to check the competitor for packages for the dates you want.
Want to save even more money? For one-off expenses like cruises and holidays, we recommend using a no-minimum-spend credit card like these for introductory cashback with no hoops to jump through:

Which cruise insurance should you buy?
A trip on a cruise is still travel, and travel insurance is still a good idea. You’ll want to make sure you can get emergency evacuation if you need it and compensation for trip cancellation.
However, check with the insurer whether the policy covers explicitly you for cruises.
Most insurers are secretive about their cruise policies, but we found that Allianz travel insurance explicitly covers cruises .
