An absolutely brilliant performance from Ricky and the Band ar the Armed Forces Day Event on 29th July 2019 on what was the hottest day of the year.

Thousand of folk patiently waited throughout the day in sweltering temperatures for The Kaiser Chiefs they definitely didn't disappoint, one young lad got plucked from the front to perform on stage with Ricky and came away with his tambourine, he face was of pure surprise and joy. the crowd went wild, and one very happy young boy who will remember this event for the rest of his life.

mamarooster45’s profile image

Having seen Kaiser Chiefs on 2 other occasions, they did not disappoint yet again, previously at this venue too (Winter Gardens, Margate).

They played a variety of their hits from over the years and also a sneak preview of what is to come (later this year). Songs included Never Miss A Beat, Parachute, Cannons and Ruby.

For such a small venue, Ricky Wilson and co certainly know how to get the crowd going, although that is really not hard to do.

Kaiser Chiefs were on stage for approximately 1 hour 45 minutes and was well worth it.

I'm looking forward to seeing them again LIVE(hopefully soon)

Leeds legends and one of Britain’s most treasured bands, the multi-award-winning Kaiser Chiefs have announced a nationwide arena tour for November 2022 with live favourites The Fratellis and The Sherlocks .

On the announcement, Kaiser Chiefs said: “It’s been a while but we’re going on tour in November and can’t wait to see you all again. We’re looking forward to putting on a big KC show. See you there!"

Formed in Leeds in 2000, Kaiser Chiefs are one of the leading bands of their generation. Fronted by the magnetic Ricky Wilson with Simon Rix on bass, Andrew ‘Whitey’ White on guitar, Nick ‘Peanut’ Baines on keyboards and drummer Vijay Mistry, the band have been Mercury nominated for their debut album, ‘Employment’ and went on to win three BRIT awards, an Ivor Novello award for Album of the Year, and have sold over 8 million albums worldwide.

Kaiser Chiefs have solidly made their mark as heroes within the British music scene, with absolutely no sign of them slowing down. The band have released seven studio albums to date including chart toppers, ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’ and ‘Education, Education, Education & War’ plus their much praised 2019 and top 3 album ‘Duck’. Watch this space for new music to come. Kaiser Chiefs have released multiple top ten singles including the infamous number 1 hit ‘Ruby’ and anthems such as ‘Oh My God’, ‘I Predict A Riot’, ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’, and ‘Never Miss A Beat’.

Glaswegian trio The Fratellis will also perform, following a rollercoaster year in 2021 which saw them unleash a new album alongside a barrage of singles and collaborations, before rounding the year off by winning the prestigious King Tut’s Songwriting Award at the Scottish Music Awards. They’ll perform songs from their new album, ‘Half Drunk Under a Full Moon’ as well as fan-favourites and indie anthems such as ‘Chelsea Dagger’.

Kaiser Chiefs’ Yorkshire neighbours The Sherlocks will open each night, completing a star-studded line-up. The Sheffield quartet have become one of the most exciting live bands in the UK. Selling out tours across the nation, they have also achieved chart success with two UK Top 10 albums.

As some of the most successful British guitar bands, their live shows are not to be missed. Each band are masters of their craft with setlists packed with hits and an unrivaled energy, nothing less than a ‘reyt good time’.

A look at the chiefs games that taylor swift will likely attend in the 2024 season amid final eras tour dates, share this article.

kaiser chiefs time travel

When Taylor Swift kicked off her Eras Tour back in March of 2023, the schedule for the Kansas City Chiefs was probably the furthest thing from consideration in her travel schedule.

But so much has changed in that time, which brings us here.

Ever since the 14-time Grammy winner went public with her relationship with Travis Kelce , Swift has been a mainstay at games to support the Chiefs tight end. That should remain the same for the 2024 NFL season as well.

Swift finished up the European leg of the Eras Tour in August, but she will go back on stage in October before closing out the 21-month marathon with three December shows in Vancouver.

But that busy schedule still lines up nicely for Swift to make appearances at Arrowhead Stadium and plenty of road games this season. Let’s take a look at the games we’d expect to see Swift in attendance.

1 Week 1: Thursday, Sept. 5 vs. Ravens

kaiser chiefs time travel

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Can Swift attend? YES.

The Chiefs open up the season at Arrowhead, and Swift does not have any known conflicts.

2 Week 2: Sunday, Sept. 15 vs. Bengals

Another marquee game at Arrowhead between these budding rivals, and Swift does not have any known conflicts besides potentially supporting close friend Selena Gomez at the Primetime Emmys.

3 Week 3: Sunday, Sept. 22 at Falcons

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs have their first road test at Atlanta, and Swift does not have any known conflicts.

4 Week 4: Sunday, Sept. 29 at Chargers

We can expect a pro-Chiefs crowd at SoFi Stadium, and Swift does not have any known conflicts.

5 Week 5: Monday, Oct. 7 vs. Saints

Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

It’ll be Monday Night Football at Arrowhead, and Swift does not have any known conflicts. It should be electric , as Kelce would say. We’ll also get a Kelce brothers reunion with Jason a part of the MNF crew.

Can Swift attend? NO.

The Chiefs are coming off a bye week for this Super Bowl rematch. Swift, though, will be back on tour. She has an Eras Tour performance at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium set for that Sunday night.

7 Week 8: Sunday, Oct. 27 at Raiders

The Chiefs are returning to the site of last season’s Super Bowl win. Swift will be in New Orleans for her scheduled Eras Tour performance.

8 Week 9: Monday, Nov. 4 vs. Buccaneers

It’ll be Monday Night Football at Arrowhead once again, and Swift does not have any known conflicts after finishing up Sunday’s show in Indianapolis.

9 Week 10: Sunday, Nov. 10 vs. Broncos

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs host the AFC West rival Broncos, and Swift does not have any known conflicts.

10 Week 11: Sunday, Nov. 17 at Bills

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs travel to face the Bills in a return to Highmark Stadium, and Swift does not have any known conflicts. This game settled nicely with Swift’s Eras Tour schedule as she’ll perform in (relatively) nearby Toronto the night before.

11 Week 12: Sunday, Nov. 24 at Panthers

kaiser chiefs time travel

The Chiefs travel to face the Panthers, and Swift does not have any known conflicts. Her final show of the two-weekend Toronto leg would have wrapped up on Saturday.

12 Week 13: Friday, Nov. 29 vs. Raiders

The Chiefs will host the Raiders on Black Friday, and Swift does not have any known conflicts.

13 Week 14: Sunday, Dec. 8 vs. Chargers

kaiser chiefs time travel

The Chiefs will host the Chargers at Arrowhead, but we won’t be seeing Swift in the crowd. The 14-time Grammy winner will conclude the record-breaking Eras Tour that Sunday with her final concert at Vancouver’s BC Place. We might see Travis make a trip to Canada that Friday before returning to Kansas City, though.

14 Week 15: Sunday, Dec. 15 at Browns

kaiser chiefs time travel

Scott R. Galvin-USA TODAY Sports

In somewhat of a homecoming for Travis Kelce, we can expect Swift to be in attendance now that the Eras Tour concluded.

15 Week 16: Saturday, Dec. 21 vs. Texans

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs will host the Texans in a Saturday game, and Swift does not have any known conflicts.

16 Week 17: Wednesday, Dec. 25 at Steelers

It’s an extremely short week for the Chiefs, and Swift could be spending Christmas Day in her home state of Pennsylvania.

The Chiefs will end the regular season at Denver, and Swift does not have any known conflicts.

Updated list of Kaizer Chiefs injuries ahead of their season opener

Kaizer Chiefs will play their opening game of the Betway Premiership season without some key players due to injuries.

Kaizer Chiefs will be without at least five players due to injuries when they play Marumo Gallants in their opening match in the Betway Premiership this weekend.

Amakhosi travel to Bloemfontein to face Gallants in their first match of the season on Saturday evening. Having recruited seven players under new coach Nasreddine Nabi, all eyes are on the Glamour Boys this weekend.

Kaizer Chiefs have suffered several injuries during their pre-season and might be without some key players. Utility defender Edmilson Dove was injured during pre-season in Turkey in July and has to be sent home. Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen also suffered an injury and is expected to return to full training in the coming weeks.

Other injured players include Tebogo Potsane , Dillan Solomons , George Matlou , and Mduduzi Mdantsane . Another player who had injuries in the past is Kaizer Chiefs new signing Bongani Sam . The ex-Orlando Pirates defender was also injured during pre-season weeks after joining Amakhosi but latest reports indicates he should be fit for Saturday’s encounter.

“Sam was part of the team that travelled to Turkey for pre-season, but returned early after picking up an injury. He came back at the same time with Edmilson Dove, who is out with injury heading into the new campaign,” a  Soccer Laduma  report read.

Injuries a concern for Kaizer Chiefs this season

“Sam, a former Orlando Pirates left-back, has been involved in training sessions since recovering from injury and the Siya crew has been led to believe that there is a chance for him to form part of the travelling team to the Free State.”

Despite a growing number of injuries, Kaizer Chiefs have managed to add depth to the squad for almost every position. The only area of concern is the striking department.

Chivaviro reveals talks with Nabi that give hope of a better season for Chiefs

‘the guys are looking hungry and motivated,’ says striker as he seeks personal improvement at amakhosi.

kaiser chiefs time travel

Ranga Chivaviro is eager to justify the hope many have in him to be a crucial attacker at Kaizer Chiefs after joining them from the relegated Marumo Gallants at the beginning of last season.

Chivaviro, 31, scored 17 goals for Gallants in all competitions before their relegation at the end of the 2022-2023 season, and there was hope he’d be an instant hit at Amakhosi.

However, an injury in his first weeks at Naturena set him back, and with the club not performing, well he struggled to adapt. Chivaviro contributed only four goals in 20 league matches last season.

That poor return by the bulky striker, combined with Chiefs finishing 10th — their worst league position — means there needs to be vast improvement in the 2024-2025 season for Chiefs and Chivaviro.

The Soweto giants also to avoid going 10 seasons without a trophy.

How Chivaviro will fit into new coach Nasreddine Nabi’s plans will become clearer when Amakhosi travel to the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday ( 5.30pm) to meet Gallants.

Kaizer Chiefs striker Ranga Chivaviro on coach Nasreddine Nabi. pic.twitter.com/whx4GD4iUv — Mahlatse Mphahlele (@BraMahlatse) September 11, 2024

Chivaviro is looking forward to working with Nabi and hopes the arrival of the 56-year-old Tunisian — who has done well in the past three seasons with Tanzania’s Young Africans, popularly known as Yanga, and FAR Rabat in Morocco — can result in an improvement in his  game.

“I want to resurrect that form [at Gallants] and hopefully it’s not just me but it ’ s all the guys,” Chivaviro said on Wednesday.

“We believe if we ’ re all on top of our game, we ’ re bound to win. That ’ s the mandate for us — to win games and put Chiefs on top, where we belong. It was a difficult first season for me and also for the team. I don ’ t know how many years we have finished outside the top eight, let alone not qualifying for Caf football.

Behind the scenes with Kaizer Chiefs. pic.twitter.com/Bu7l4hwsLB — Mahlatse Mphahlele (@BraMahlatse) September 11, 2024

“But we have a point to prove. We want to rise up and make sure it doesn’t happen again. The guys are looking hungry and motived and I don’t think we need more motivation than that we didn’t do well last season, and we owe it to ourselves to do better this campaign.”

Chivaviro’s first encounter with Nabi was when Gallants reached the semifinals of the 2022-2023 Caf Confederation Cup. He scored seven goals in that competition, including the one in the second leg of the Limpopo team’s 4-1 on aggregate defeat to Yanga in their quarterfinal matchup.

“It was one of the first conversations we had, me and him [when Nabi arrived at Chiefs in the off-season]. He reminded me of what I was doing and who I was and how he wants to see me as this season. We touched a little on this and that.

Broos confident of Bafana reaching Afcon after last-gasp win in South Sudan

“He’s someone who wants to understand what’s going on with your life. We’ve had that conversation and it’s productive. We’re hoping this season will bring back that Ranga who was scoring goals regularly.”

Chivaviro said working with Nabi was refreshing but the good thing about it was he’s reminded everyone why they were at Chiefs. “For me, personally, it’s been a lot of learning. W hat’s important is he’s reminding us what Kaizer Chiefs is, and what it takes to be here. Being in this circle must mean you’re quality,” he said.

“He takes a lot of time to remind us of that, and tells us what’s expected to be a Chiefs player. We’re now used to what he expects from us as players and we know what we need to do this season — to bring back the glory days for this club.”

A Guide to Hunting Russia’s Northern Lights in Murmansk

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / A Guide to Hunting Russia’s Northern Lights in Murmansk

Where can one experience the northern lights in Russia ? Where is Murmansk in the Kola Peninsula? What are the optimal conditions for finding the Northern Lights in Murmansk, Russia? What else to do in Murmansk during the day? How do I get to Murmansk (Kola Peninsula) from Moscow or St. Petersburg?

There are many wonders in nature, but few are as awe-inspiring as the Northern Lights in Murmansk. Otherwise known as the Aurora Borealis, this phenomenon has brought travellers from all over the world for an unforgettable experience. With the help of this guide, we can ensure that you get the most out of your experience hunting for the Northern Lights in Murmansk, the Kola Peninsula .

Table of Contents

Where is the Kola Peninsula and Murmansk?

The Kola Peninsula is a Russian Region in the North of the Arctic Circle. It is close to the border between Finland and Norway. Murmansk is a small port city in the northwestern area of this region and one of the best places to view the Northern Lights.

What is the best time for Northern Lights in Murmansk?

Hunting for the Northern Lights in Murmansk entails elements of preparation and probabilities but there is also an element of luck. While you can never be 100% sure of sighting the Northern Lights during your stay in the Kola Peninsula there are certain times and areas that will infinitely increase your probability of seeing the lights.

Predicting the appearance of the Northern Lights has always been something of a dark art, but there are some general rules of thumb to follow. Being on the lookout between 8pm and 2am from mid-September to mid-April is critical, preferably from within the Arctic Circle (latitudes between 64 degrees to 70 degrees north should do it) to maximise your chances. The best season to visit Murmansk in order to enjoy winter activities during the day and Northern Lights hunt during the night is January-March.

To prevent the hunt for Russia’s Northern Lights from becoming complete guesswork, we partner with the Polar Geophysical Institute (PGI) in the Kola Peninsula. The PGI uses satellite technology to check for the possibility of Northern Lights appearing. Upon getting a positive confirmation, they search for a place with clear skies and inform us accordingly.

Here you will find some awesome tips to get the most of photographing your experience of the Northern Lights.

What to do in Murmansk while hunting for the Northern Lights?

Want to experience everything Murmansk has to offer while hunting the Northern Lights? Murmansk is known for its incredible biodiversity with its endless forests and tundra, crystal clear lakes and fast-flowing rivers.

1. Explore the city

kaiser chiefs time travel

Murmansk is the northernmost city in Russia, with a population of around 300,000 people, by far the largest city above the Arctic Circle. An important Russian naval base, Murmansk served as a port for the Arctic convoys during WWII. Spend a day to explore the city’s main attractions, such as:

  • Lenin Nuclear Icebreaker . It is not only a historical ship – the first nuclear powered civilian vessel – but it also serves as a museum. It is one sight in Murmansk you will not see anywhere else in the world.
  • Alyosha Monument . Also considered the “Monument of the Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War” which commemorates those who defended the port of Murmansk during the war.
  • Northern Fleet Naval Museum . Its exhibits include models of ships, artifacts, and exhibits of Russia’s first Navy and WWII convoys, and a photo collection of Franz Josef Land .
  • Regional Museum of Local Lore . The oldest museum in the area, this museum includes everything from minerals and geology to the wildlife, local lore, history, and economy of Murmansk.

2. Get some adrenaline on a snowmobiling excursion

kaiser chiefs time travel

Travel up to Kirovsk at the foot of the Khibiny Mountains and go on a snowmobiling adventure while traveling through rugged mountain regions and beautiful tundra. In the evening, if the conditions are right, you may even be led home by the lights of the Aurora Borealis.

3. Enjoy amazing skiing and snowboarding

What to do in Murmansk Northern Lights Russia

Skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and other winter activities are popular in Murmansk and Kirovsk. One of the most famous is Big Wood . Nine T-bar lifts, chair lifts and gondola lifts take you on top of the mountain with slopes on both sides. One lift reaches the height of 1047 m, where you can ski down a 2300m slope.

If you aren’t fully equipped for snow sports when you reach Murmansk, you can rent ski and snow equipment from the resort.

4. Be mesmerized by the ice sculptures at the Snow Village

kaiser chiefs time travel

The Snow Village has been painstakingly constructed almost entirely out of ice and snow and features ornately decorated buildings, sculptures and labyrinthine tunnels with intricately patterned rooms, walls and corridors. This enchanting place is the work of true artists and a chance to open your imagination to the magical spirit of winter.

Note: Snow Village operates only from 25th of December until 25th of April.

5. Feed a reindeer at the Saami people tourist center

kaiser chiefs time travel

In addition to giving you a fair chance of glimpsing Russia’s Northern Lights, this area offers travellers the option of experiencing the rich culture of its indigenous Saami people. The Saami are local reindeer herders who are dependent on reindeer for most of their livelihood. You can even try your hand at reindeer herding and develop a deeper understanding of the Saami traditions and culture.

6. Go husky dog-sledding

kaiser chiefs time travel

Alternatively, you can go husky sledding, visiting a farm just outside of Murmansk. You can feast upon a traditional meal before going sledding along specially prepared routes through the snow. You will get a sense of all of the huskies personalities as companionable and fun-loving dogs who have endless stamina to pull you and your sled through the snow.

7. Explore the shores of Barents Sea on a day excursion to the famous Teriberka village

Northern Lights Murmansk tour Russia Kola Peninsula Teriberka

Located on the shore of Barents Sea, 120km, three hours’ drive down an icy road from Murmansk, this small village has just 617 residents and a wide selection of picturesque abandoned houses that could serve as art objects or as a set for horror films. In 2015, thanks to the Oscar-nominated drama movie “Leviathan” from producer Alexei Zvyagintsev, Teriberka village became more known in Russia and also abroad.

During the tour of the village, you will stop at several locations, such as a wooden ships “cemetery”, which is older than 100 years and started from Imperial times. Then, we head to the Arctic Ocean coast for the weird and wonderful photos of frozen rocks and tundra against the mighty Barents Sea, and a magnificent waterfall that flows into the Arctic Ocean.

8. See the Northern lights from a glass igloo

kaiser chiefs time travel

Enjoy starry nights under the Northern Lights at the glass-igloo. Located on the way to Teriberka village, right on the Arctic Circle, each of its glass-domed rooms offers cosy beds, cosseting fur throws, en-suite bathroom and even a small kitchenette. But it’s the view that steals the show, with snowy forests and the lakes frozen waters looked down upon by starry skies and, if conditions are right, the green swirls of the Northern Lights.

How to get to Murmansk?

Getting to murmansk from moscow.

Getting to Murmansk from Moscow can be achieved by a direct flight taking about two and a half hours while overland travel by train can be anywhere upwards of 35 hours. For those who are used to total luxury, the northern lights can be discovered on an epic train journey to the Arctic regions of Russia .

Before you set off on your adventure to the Northern Lights in Murmansk, make sure you allocate a few days to explore all Moscow has to offer . Travelling in winter is when this cold city turns itself into a snow-covered wonderland which gives the city its unique character.

At the top of every tourist must-see list for Moscow sits The Kremlin, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and The Red Square all of which are steeped in Soviet history. Delving into the luxurious end of this destination, you can find the highest concentration of billionaires around the globe leading to an array of experiences you are unlikely to find anywhere else.

Getting to Murmansk from St Petersburg

Your other main option for getting to Murmansk to see the Northern Lights is from St Petersburg . A direct flight to Murmansk will take a little under two hours. If you feel as though you would prefer to take an overland route a direct train would take around 22 hours.

If you want to experience everything on the way to your hunt for the Northern Lights, you can look at this immersive tour taking you all the way up to Murmansk via Karelia and its accompanying in a nature park to see resplendent waterfalls and marble quarries, while also stopping off Kizhi island via a hovercraft ride.

There have been few occasions where the Northern Lights have been seen as far down as St Petersburg but unfortunately, these instances are few and far between. However, if you have some extra time to spare in what is sometimes referred to as the ‘Northern Capital’ of Russia, you will be rewarded with the cultural experience of a lifetime.

This city is renowned for its collection of artwork from the State Russian Museum to the Hermitage museum. You could alternatively treat yourself to some theatre or ballet from the Mariinsky theatre or even strolling the UNESCO heritage listed historic centre of town.

Weather in Murmansk

Murmansk has relatively mild weather for how far north it is. In the winter weather is usually around -10 degrees Celsius. Polar nights (24-hour darkness) occur from December 2 – January 11. Polar nights are a natural phenomenon that occurs at latitudes to the north of the polar circle. In northwestern Russia, the circle passes through the southern part of the  Kola Peninsula  and part of  Karelia . At Murmansk’s latitude, polar nights last about 40 days, while the phenomenon lasts half a year at the  North Pole .

Even though the sun remains below the horizon, the Russian Arctic is not blacked out completely. On clear days, you can see beautiful sunset colours in the south while the sky to the north is a deep midnight blue.

Enjoy your tour in Murmansk

So head for the snow-white serenity of the Kola Peninsula, where the Saami have herded reindeer for generations, go husky sledding throughout the tundra and go snowmobiling through the Khibiny mountains. All of this can be done on your hunt for the Northern Lights in Murmansk .

In this piece, we're glad to share the most exciting activities to make your time touring Murmansk simply irresistible! Let's have a closer look at its wonders.

Top Activities to Add to Your Murmansk Itinerary

Searching the northern lights in russia.

Did you know that Russia is one of the best places in the world for viewing Northern Lights? In fact, the unparalleled city of Murmansk is a unique place to go and hunt this dazzling phenomenon, and hundreds of people come here in the hope of gazing at the miracle of Aurora Borealis with their own eyes. As a rule, the best chances of catching the colorful light show is when going to the outskirts (farther from the city lights).

If you are among those who want to try their luck, then you need to plan your holiday somewhere between September 1st to April 15th. But keep in mind that December and January are considered to be the most auspicious months for this activity as this is the time when the polar night reigns in the area, thus the chances to observe the magical phenomena are at their highest. Can you think of a more magical way to spend the holiday season than having your own Russian winter fairytale ?

Best Time to Travel For a better chance of seeing the magic of the Northern Lights, consider visiting Murmansk in December or January.

Visiting the Lenin Icebreaker

Amazing Murmansk is home to another unique item, the nuclear-powered icebreaker Lenin, the first surface ship fitted with nuclear propulsion in the world. The icebreaker served its country for over 30 years until 1989 when it was withdrawn from the navy because it was wearing thin from ice friction. And subsequently, it has been turned into a museum!

During its glory days, Lenin covered over 1 000 000 km (654 000 miles) and 906 km (563 mi) were through thick ice! Interestingly, although there is a long-standing belief that a woman on board a ship brings bad luck, brave young women constituted 20% of Lenin's crew. The first nuclear-powered icebreaker in the world was supposed to become a symbol of the mighty Soviet Union, so the interior of the ship was carefully designed to correspond to this high status.

It was decorated with expensive woods unheard of at the time. "Lenin" didn't go through any reconstruction and almost everything you can see onboard are the original items which have remained there since the 1960s.

Have you Heard of Russian Fjords?

Yes, as we've mentioned above, wonderful Norway is not the only place boasting natural beauty of such. Russia's Murmansk also has something special to offer during your Russian trip . The most well-known Murmansk fjord is called the Kola Bay and it is just as spectacular as the famous Norwegian inlets. What is more, you don't need to travel far or hike for hours in order to enjoy the amazing views, Murmansk was built on it!

At the east side of the Kola Bay is located one of the most significant Russian objects of military importance, the port of Murmansk, famous for never being ice-bound even though Murmansk is one of the northernmost cities on the planet (no, it has nothing to do with magic, the secret is in the warm underwater currents). What is more, the Kola Bay is home to the town of Polyarny, the main base of the Russian Federation's Northern Fleet.

Travelers who wish to see and find out more about the beautiful Murmansk inlets are welcome to rent a sailboat (preferably with a local guide who has some interesting stories about the area to share) and enjoy a memorable boat ride across the Kola Bay.

Spending Time at a Husky Farm

If you are a dog person, there is one very special place you can't miss during your Murmansk travel. Nestled a 15-minute ride away from the city, "Ulybka Alyaski" (translated as "The Smile of Alaska") Husky Farm is one of the favored tourist attractions in the Murmansk Oblast. Every visitor will have a chance to bask in adoration, coming from the friendly residents of the farm.

All the dogs there are happy to be hugged and petted, and a knowledgeable guide will share some fascinating stories about the breed's history as well as the husky sledding competitions. In winter, you can even have a chance to try your hand in this sport and see for yourself that a husky is never happier than when it is working. After the ride, you'll be asked for a mug of hot tea with the traditional Russian pastries.

Fascinating Activity During your Murmansk travel, don't miss an opportunity to try your hand in husky dog sledding competition!

Paying a Visit to a Saami Village

Located not far from the Husky Farm, the Saami Village is also a great place to put on your bucket list of Russia travel . Saami are the indigenous people of the north, boasting a unique lifestyle, rich heritage, and traditions.

During the visit, you explore the history of Saami, see their traditional buildings and magical idols (it's better to have some change on you to be able to make a wish), and taste national cuisine, including salmon fish soup, lovozerskiy bread, and pakula, the traditional Saami drink made out of the Chaga mushrooms.

To top it all, travelers are invited to enjoy reindeer sledding, participate in the traditional games, and even to take photos in the national Saami clothing!

Enjoying the Snow Village

The Snow Village is a kingdom of snow, ice, and wonder. Just imagine a huge enclosed structure, made entirely out of snow (hence the name of the fairytale place) and covering an area of 2 400 square meters (2 870 yards). Impressive right? And this incredible complex is a place that brings back that thrill and thirst for adventure that we all felt, thinking about snowy winter as children.

Inside you can find an amazing snow labyrinth, decorated with snow and ice sculptures and reliefs, depicting various fairytale and historical characters, images of local flora and fauna, as well as classic popular winter activities and much more. As a highlight, to brighten up your experience even more, in one of the numerous rooms there is an icy postbox, and everyone is welcome to use it to send a letter to the main winter magician in Russia, Grandfather Frost (the Slavic version of Santa Claus).

Murmansk's Celebration of the Sun

As noted previously (as well as in our first piece dedicated to the incredible city), Murmansk's polar nights offer the best conditions for those travelers who want to experience the wonders of the Northern Lights. But there are more reasons to go to Murmansk while the polar nights last. If you happen to travel to the largest town in the world located above the Arctic Circle around the 11th of January — the 40th day when the non-stop night darkness starts to give in to the light of the day — you can take part in one of the most important annual events in Murmansk, the Celebration of the Sun.

When the sun rises above the horizon for the first time after such a long absence, the citizens of Murmansk get together at the Solnichnaya Gorka Observation Deck to celebrate the first dawn and share this long-awaited moment.

Sunset in Murmask

Although the sun won't stay up for long (usually the first sun after the polar nights appears for about half an hour), in a week's time the daylight will last for 3 hours. As January goes, the sun "grows stronger" and by the end of the month, the full disk of the sun will appear over the horizon.

On the last Sunday of January, the city celebrates one of its main holidays, "Hello, Sun!" Different festive events take place all over the city, but the main celebrations, including dancing, games, and concerts happen at the main square of Murmansk, the "Square of Five Angles".

But the polar night and the Northern Lights aren't the only interesting phenomena you can catch in Murmansk. In summer, the citizens of the city live through the polar day when the sun stays above the horizon for 62 days straight!

Celebration Time On the last Sunday of January, the city celebrates one of its main holidays, "Hello, Sun!". The majority of the events take place at the "Square of Five Angels"

We've started our first piece about marvelous Murmansk by telling you about the wondrous place that seemed to belong to a fantasy novel instead of being one of the cities in immense Russia. Now, we hope that our two-piece guide was enough to prove our point and show you what a truly magical place the biggest city above the Arctic Circle, fairytale Murmansk, is! It has all the chances of becoming your favorite Russian city, and if you are interested in seeing everything we've told you about with your own eyes, one of our travel specialists will be happy to answer all your questions and plan a perfect vacation for you.
