Lady Gaga finally revives Chromatica Ball tour with new 2022 concert dates

More than two years after announcing the Chromatica tour, Gaga will finally hit the road in support of the Grammy-winning album with a slew of new dates.

lady gaga tour info

Rocket No. 9 is taking off to the planet Chromatica once again, as Lady Gaga finally rescheduled her highly anticipated Chromatica Ball tour dates more than two years after their initial announcement.

According to a tweet shared Monday by Gaga, the tour will now expand to 15 dates around the world, beginning July 17 and stretching through September 10.

Gaga initially announced the Chromatica Ball tour to coincide with the album's original rollout in 2020, though the coronavirus pandemic forced the global tour's postponement twice: once to the summer of 2021, and again to 2022.

Released in May of 2020, Chromatica debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and produced two top-five hits: Lead single "Stupid Love" and the No. 1-bowing Ariana Grande collaboration "Rain On Me." To date, the House of Gucci actress has only promoted Chromatica with one televised concert performance at the 2020 MTV VMAs, where she took the stage with Grande to perform a medley of tunes from the album.

In addition to the Chromatica Ball , album producer BloodPop previously told EW the team behind the studio set has also worked on continuing the Chromatica era in different ways — including a potential rollout of unreleased songs recorded during the LP's early sessions.

"We worked with SOPHIE very early on. [She was] the first collaborator of those sessions," he told EW shortly after the album's release, referencing late Scottish producer SOPHIE's contributions to the gestation cycle. "Those days were fun. We set up six microphones and recorded [Gaga's] Lamborghini exhaust, and SOPHIE cut it up into samples. Freddie Freeman was hitting homers down in San Diego, so it was up to visiting superstar Lady Gaga to keep the on-base percentage exceptionally high Saturday night at Dodger Stadium, site of one of the last stops on her “Chromatica Ball” outing. Surprises were few, this many weeks into a mega-tour whose production values were already known among the legions of Little Monsters who’d long since put curious paws to Googling Gaga’s setlists and setpieces.

Popular on Variety

Once those three introductory hits were out of the way and Gaga regained full control of her life and limbs for the next hour and 45 minutes, title cards periodically appeared on screen, establishing “Act I” through “Act V” and subsequent finales and denouements. Unlike her long-running “Enigma” show in Las Vegas, this tour has none of those scripted, philosophical monologues, so it’s not easy to suss whether there’s a real narrative arc at play in her mind or whether the ”act” business just provides cover for costume changes. There was undeniably an element of the momentum going into stall mode every time Gaga disappeared from sight for four or five minutes. But, as costuming spectacle goes, you’d be hard-pressed to argue it wasn’t worth the lull when the singer would suddenly reappeared in a bodysuit made out of what looked like innards-revealing, torso-hugging plexiglas, or better still, all masked up as a lovely, if intimidating, purple mantis.

She and her dozen or so dancers worked hard for the money for the first two-thirds of the show, working up enough monsoonal moisture to breathe sweaty life into “Chromatica” album tracks that might’ve slipped a fan’s mind, like the very pandemic-premonitory-feeling “911.” The set warmed up, eventually, after being established in the show’s beginnings with a monochromatic feel Gaga herself has said was inspired by architectual brutalism. (Gaga could sound a little Germanic herself in the early going as she repeatedly commanded the audience to “get your fucking hands in the air,” with a commandeering scowl and harsh make-up that was its own kind of brutal.)

But then, past the halfway point, the crowd of 52,000 saw that platform at second base pay off with an extended solo segment that gave the audience the unmitigated, uninterrupted Gaga that would form a solid basis for a fine one-woman stadium show, should she ever want to attempt that ballsy a gambit. Sitting at a piano that had been formulated to appear as something growing organically out of gnarly forest limbs and trunks, the queen of poker faces smiled for the first time all evening (not counting a sinister giggle earlier) and turned Dodger Stadium into an enchanted pop forest with a clinching series of solo ballads and, yes, motivational speeches.

For some of us, no show Gaga ever does will outdo her “Jazz and Piano” residency in Vegas, where she was more parts Rosemary Clooney than Grace Jones. But, of course, you’re not getting the full Gaga if you’re getting her in Irving Berlin mode. And in this show, the affected but still affecting intimacy of the solo segment made for a dynamic setup to a final stretch back on the main stage that made her dance-teria mode seem like her best mode after all.

Coming after a quieter, more thoughtful segment, “Stupid Love,” an up-tempo track that seemed kind of underwhelming when it was introduced as “Chromatica’s” first single two and a half years ago, suddenly weirdly felt like a visceral kick in the pants. And “Rain on Me,” too, finally felt as cathartic as Gaga meant it to. (After the crowd had just narrowly dodged an unseasonable L.A. precipitation bullet, it’s a good thing being an actual rainmaker is not among Gaga’s talents.)

The most interesting superstars are the ones that walk fine lines, and Gaga certainly continues to do that. After “Joanne,” and especially after the world discovered — via “A Star Is Born” — that she’s conventionally pretty, she could have further played the authenticity card for all it’s worth. But in the spirit of those “Keep Austin weird” bumper stickers Texans used to brandish, Gaga has determined to keep herself weird — or just weird enough to provide necessarily ballast to her more earnest inclinations. It’s clear, by the end of a show, that she just wants to give the disenfranchised world a hug. But with costuming that include jagged shoulder cones, it’s not clear how that’s going to happen without blood involved.

Lady Gaga Revives Jazz and Piano Vegas Residency for Summer 2024

  • By Tomás Mier

Lady Gaga is bringing her Jazz and Piano show back to Las Vegas !

On Tuesday, the pop star announced that she’ll return to Nevada this summer for an eight-night run of her beloved show. The residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM starts June 19 and wraps July 6.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public March 23 at 10 a.m. local time with a limited number of on-stage seats also available. Fans can access presale tickets starting Wednesday.

Gaga debuted her “Jazz and Piano” show — a celebration of jazz standards and the Great American songbook — back in early 2019 when she first arrived in Las Vegas.

During a show last September, before playing a jazzed-up version of “Born This Way,” Gaga took a moment to recognize trans rights.

“I’ve got something to say about trans rights in this country,” she said. “You got something to say, you gotta speak up right?” She even got a little funky with the piano toward the middle before taking a second to talk to the audience again. “And you know, sometimes you hear people say things like, ‘I don’t always know what to say,’” she said. “Just listen. Don’t say nothin’. Listen to the stories of real people’s lives.”

Last year, she played the residency shows in September and October and paid tribute to the late Tony Bennett, performing tracks from their collaborative album Love for Sale .

Lady Gaga snared in Lower East Side hipster stand-off over famed nightclub, The Box

Will Lady Gaga cross the picket lines in a Lower East Side hipster stand-off over The Box nightclub?

Mother Monster famously began her career in the dives of the Downtown neighborhood.

Now one of her haunts, The Box, is under fire after it was accused in a lawsuit of allowing men to sexually harass one of its bottle girls.

And Page Six hears that the “Bad Romance” star is being made to choose sides, with scenesters begging her to cancel plans to host her sister’s bachelorette party there next week.

The late-night club, which is known for its extremely risque and often scatological stage shows, has been open since 2007 and has hosted stars including Zoe Kravitz , Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus .

A lawsuit filed by a former staffer in 2022 claims that managers “ordered and coerced female waitresses, performers, and employees to dress provocatively and travel throughout New York City in order to lure male customers to… The Box, where they would be serviced with sexual acts, sexual intercourse, drugs, and excessive alcohol by other female employees who had been forced to perform these acts.”

The court papers alleges that the bosses “forced these female employees to do this with promises to them of money, advancement, access to wealthy and celebrity clients, and career advancement. The female employees were threatened with termination or loss of their shifts if they did not comply.”

(A Patch story about the suit claims that the defendants denied these claims).

The case is still working its way through the courts.

But we’re told the Lower East Side nightlife set are still riven by the claims, with one insider telling us scene-y sort “are urging Gaga to cancel the party.”

Natalia, a fashion designer responsible for many of the singer’s stage looks, is engaged to photographer Alex Dolan.

They’re expected to get hitched in Maine in early June.

Reps for The Box and Lagy Gaga didn’t get back to us.
