Reviews from Our Guests

“We did the house & village tour as well as the bus tour and it was all very interesting & informative. Everyone in the village & on the bus tour were very friendly. The bus driver went out of his way to show & explain about the Amish houses and the English houses and show things with descriptions about the homes & schools. We stopped at an Amish store & were able to purchase some foods that the lady had made(sticky buns, ketchup, whoopie pies, pickles and all were delicious!!! The tour of the Amish home was very informative. My granddaughters 12 & 14 also enjoyed the tour, the bus ride, & feeding the animals in the barn area around the village. Would highly recommend if you have 3 hours to spend in Lancaster & I recommend doing all the parts of the tour!!”

“This is a very interesting tour to take that’s also family friendly. I took my 2 children both under 5 and they had a great time learning and feeding the animals. Would highly recommend it.”

“Our tour guide was local. She’s very knowledgeable about the Amish way of life. We enjoyed our bus tour to the Amish farm and those nice freshly baked warm buttery pretzels are to die for. Made our trip a memorable one.”

“Our office took a group of international students from different countries all over the world to hear about an interesting part of our culture that takes place right here in Lancaster County. Though, it was a little cold, the students had a blast! It was such a great experience. Highly recommend!”

“Decided to take a back road trip in PA and came upon the bus tour with The Amish Village. The staff were very pleasant and got all 7 of us on the last tour bus. Our Guide Wayne was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the life of the Amish families there. I was very impressed and my grand kids ages 8 and 6 surprisingly listened intently and asked questions. I also learned several things that I was not aware of. If given the chance I would repeat this tour and I would also recommend to my friends and other family to take it as well.”

See What People Are Saying

This experience is so wonderful. Our tour guide was excellent and the content was very educational. We enjoyed learning about Amish home life during the house tour, and the attached little farm and schoolhouse was also nice to stroll through. The scooter track was VERY fun :) Nice gift shop. The bus tour guide was so friendly and took us to some very special places. We interacted with Amish in intimate small groups and were able to purchase fresh baked items from the hands that made them, hot chocolate and hand made decor/goods! We also went to an Amish owned store with other yummy treats and crafts/goods. It was so amazing to see them plowing their fields with horses! Loved this Amish Farm and House and bus tour and highly highly recommend!

TripAdvisor Reviewer : Stephanie Diaz

I was first hesitant to visit here due to the comments of others about it being next to a Target. And yes, it's literally next to a Target, but it's so much more! We have children ages 10,9 and 6. We did the 90min bus tour of the Amish countryside, and we all enjoyed this. You get to have someone drive you all around the county seeing Amish and Mennonite farms. You make two stops for about 15min each to shop and explore two farms. Back at the Amish house, we took the house tour and our guide was fantastic and thorough. She kept the attention of all the kids in our group and it was facinating. The kids took an additional hour exploring outside. They have barns, blacksmith shop, available food, carriage rides, etc. When you are at the farm you have no idea you are next to a Target. And the animals! Our kids pet horses, donkeys, goats and chased chickens... Many interactions with animals if you like. It was a worthwhile afternoon and we all learned!

Explore Lancaster, PA’s rich Amish culture, delicious food, and charming farms. Read on for a journey through history and modern delights.

I’m so lucky to live just 80 minutes from Lancaster, PA. My wife and I love the Amish culture , the food , shopping , history , and driving the country roads studded with storybook-looking farms. The city of Lancaster was founded in 1730 and has had a lot of time to create a wonderful place to live or visit. While the town’s history is deep and colorful, there are plenty of modern touches in and around Lancaster. Let’s go for a drive and look at what I like the best.

What's in This Article:

Farm Culture

Half the fun of a trip to Lancaster is driving the country roads through the Pennsylvania farm country. Both modern and Amish farms dot the landscape on Routes 222 and 272 as I cross into Pennsylvania and on to Lancaster. Small farm markets offer nursery plants, baked goods, crafts, and more to the visitors driving these roads.

Look for this sign to find Seven Springs Farm on Route 222 just over the Maryland border near Wakefield. Photo by Kurt Jacobson

Spring through October is the best time to stop at a local farm market , and bringing a cooler along is a smart choice for food and beverage purchases. I like to stop at Seven Springs Orchard for baked goods, preserves, and fresh fruit. I recently visited their shop and bought fresh apricots, peach jam, and strawberry rhubarb jam. No one was in the shop, so I deposited the money in the slot and proceeded to my next farm stop.

Chances are good that you’ll see an Amish horse-drawn buggy clopping down Lancaster County roads. Slow down and pass them carefully when you come upon them. As I drove along Route 272, I saw a horse-drawn Amish buggy with the back window open. Four young smiling faces waved at me and each passing car, brightening the day of motorists. I pulled over to take a photo of a gorgeous farm, and the buggy with the kids passed me, still smiling and waving.

Nursery Plants for Cheap

Down the road, I spied a sign at a nursery stating half off annuals and twenty-five percent off perennials, and I pulled into the parking lot. Inside the nursery were some of the healthiest plants I’ve seen. I bought two four-packs of marigolds, basil, pineapple sage, and a tomato plant. The total price was a mere $4.40! When I came out of the nursery, the same kids who waved at me unloaded from their buggy with their mother and went into the nursery. The Amish don’t like to have their pictures taken, so I settled for a shot of the buggies parked at the nursery instead of the kids.

Southern Market in downtown Lancaster is an incubator space for mom-and-pop restaurateurs testing the market for their particular cuisine. Food stations include Dough Heads Waffles , Akhi Sushi , Flavors of Morocco , Lemongrass , Pizzeria 211 , and Bar 1888 (a permanent feature). This tempting dining hall is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but open the rest of the week. Nearby parking at Steinman Garage or on-street metered parking is available.

I stopped in, had a vegetarian hand pie from Flavors of Morocco and pannang curry from Lemongrass, and washed it down with a fantastic agua fresca mocktail at Bar 1888. Philip, the bartender, told me, “The pizza at Pizzeria 211 is the best in Lancaster.”

I popped into Pizzeria 211, looked at the cheese pizza sold by the slice, and wished I had room for a slice, but I was stuffed.

Cest la Vie , Seoul Mates , and   Barberet Bistro and Bakery are restaurants on my must-try list for lunch.  On a recent visit, I  enjoyed pastries  at  Barberet and took a few home for further testing .

I’ve also stopped in at Roundbreads Bakery shop and can tell you there’s a good reason they sell out early most days. Check them out for bagels, donuts, and coffee. The Cork & Cap Restaurant is inside the Cork Factory Hotel. I had a delicious dinner there and wrote about the experience .

Lancaster has a nice selection of historic and modern hotels . I’ve stayed at the Cork Factory Hotel and loved this renovated factory-turned-hotel and restaurant. I’ve also visited the historic Lancaster Arts Hotel and think it’s a place I’d like to stay due to its artsy feel and John J. Jeffries restaurant next door.

The Cork Factory Hotel was a great place to stay. I enjoyed how easy it was to walk to Downtown Lancaster from the hotel. Photo by Kurt Jacobson

The Lancaster Marriot at Penn Square is a modern hotel built using the old Watt and Shand Department Store facade and the Montgomery House, an 1804 home. The Montgomery House adds authenticity to the hotel complex, blending old and new Lancaster.

The Marriott offers 416 guestrooms and suites, parking, dining, and a spa, and it also has mobility-accessible rooms. One of the best things about staying at the Marriott is that almost everything you’d want to see in Downtown Lancaster is within walking distance from the hotel. Gallery Row, Fulton Theater , and Lancaster Central Market are a short walk from the Marriott. I enjoyed a stroll down historic Water Street , checking out the small historic homes.

Lancaster is bursting with art galleries, museums, and places like the American Music Theater for live shows. On a recent trip, I got lucky and visited on a day when the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Museum were open until 7 PM for their Third Thursday hours.

lancaster pa amish farm tours

The Lancaster Museum of Art is a fun stop. I loved the vintage mansion it’s in and the artwork. Photo by Kurt Jacobson

The Lancaster Museum of Art is located at 135 North Lime Street on the edge of Musser Park . This small museum has a nice collection of paintings by local and regional artists. During my visit, the front desk person told me the Demuth Museum was also open late, so I walked 10 minutes to investigate.

The executive director, Abby Baer, was at the front desk and told me, “This home is one of the oldest in Lancaster City and was built in the 18th century.”

Charles Demuth lived in the home from age six until his death in 1935. I liked the way the museum preserved the old home, giving an idea of what city living was like in 19th-century Lancaster during Demuth’s lifetime.

Visit Lancaster PA’s website indicates there are over 125 shops and art galleries in Lancaster. I thought that the number of art galleries seemed high. I asked Joel Cliff of Discover Lancaster how many galleries were in the area, and he said, “It’s not too far off, as there are 40 or so art galleries in Lancaster City alone.”

With at least 40  art galleries in the city and more than 30 spread throughout the rest of the county in towns like  Lititz ,  Marietta ,  Strasburg , and  Ephrata , Lancaster County is a wonderful place to explore the art scene .

Other Area Attractions

President James Buchanan’s home, Wheatland , is just a short drive from Downtown Lancaster and features in-person guided home tours, museum exhibitions, the Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum , and a museum shop.

There are several golf courses in Lancaster County . The US Women’s Open was recently held at Lancaster Country Club and brought recognition of the area’s golf courses to a broad audience. You can find a list of the Lancaster area golf courses online.

I’ve visited Musser Park in Downtown Lancaster and D.F. Buchmiller County Park . Musser Park is an excellent place to catch spring and fall colors and visit the Lancaster Art Museum. At D.F. Buchmiller Park, you can find pickleball courts, volleyball, a children’s playground, restrooms, three pavilions, and an 18-hole disc golf course. Other parks of note are Lancaster County Central Park , Long’s Park , Susquehannock State Park , and Conestoga Greenway Trail , which connects Lancaster City to Central Park.

One of my favorite things to do is walk the streets of Downtown Lancaster , looking for historic signs. I’ve found many interesting sites, including the grave of Thadeus Stevens , a famous Pennsylvania senator. The movie about President Lincoln , A Team of Rivals , brought Senator Stevens to my attention. I never thought back then that I’d find his grave site. Stevens chose this humble cemetery due to its policy of accepting minorities. Most other Lancaster cemeteries during his time had racist policies.

lancaster pa amish farm tours

Some folks might not enjoy walking in old cemeteries, but I love trying to read the old gravestones and try to find the oldest one. Thadeus Stevens is buried in the Shriner-Concord Cemetery. Photo by Kurt Jacobson

Another cool historical marker I found was on Water Street near the Lancaster Central Market. I found this tiny home and its history fascinating.

A Home for Those in Need

According to Wikipedia, Lancaster does more than its fair share of welcoming refugees from around the world. Nowadays, not everyone thinks hosting so many refugees is a good thing, but this writer likes the idea. Lancaster has welcomed around 5,000 refugees between 2005 and 2019. This influx of people from outside our shores bodes well for those who like ethnic foods. Some of the restaurants we can try are Norbu Lancaster , Southern Market , Himalayan Curry and Grill , and Yuzu Asian Cuisine .

Of course, many German settlers immigrated to Pennsylvania around the 18th century, leading to the common name, Pennsylvania Dutch Country (“Dutch” deriving from “Deutsch,” meaning German) . The German settlers brought their food and drink specialties to Lancaster County, which remains to this day. Several breweries are found in the city and county, making Lancaster a great place to go beer exploring.
