1. Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary  

Bring out your best camera lenses because Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is the first place you need to be. Home to some of the rare and endangered wildlife species, you can spot Bengal Tigers, Indian Leopard and Indian elephants here. 

The forests of this wildlife sanctuary are dense, which adds to the thrill of tiger sightings. Many visitors have spotted leopards and tigers very close to their safari jeeps. There are two different kinds of safaris available here. The van safari that will take you through the dense forests is scheduled between 6:30 and 9 AM in the morning and between 3:30 and 6:00 PM in the evening. The elephant safari timings are between 7:00 and 8:30 AM as well as between 3:30 and 5:00 PM.

Pro Tip: Go for the morning safari to spot some rare birds and animals.

2. Moyar River

A tributary to the Bhavani River , the Moyar river originates from a town named Moyar . Being very close to the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, you can spot many animals including tigers and elephants who come near the river to quench their thirst. Visit the place in the early morning hours or during sunset to spot these animals.

You can go boating, fishing and other activities while you are here. However, it is the tranquility of the place that draws the attention of travellers from across the country. 3. Maravakandy Dam

Lush green forests, a quaint rendezvous with nature by a river – if this sounds fun to you, then Maravakandy Dam is the place for you. Built-in 1951 , this place looks straight out of heaven during sunrise.

Come here for the picturesque view, stay for observing the life of animals living in the wild. You will be able to spot some rare birds and animals near the dam. So, it is advisable to carry your camera and keep your binoculars ready. The dam opens for visitors every day at 9 AM and closes at 6 PM.

4. Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta 

Betta means hill in Kannada. Located at a height of 1454 metres above sea level, this is the peak is situated in Bandipur National Park . Bandipur national park is a tiger reserve and also home to some 3000 elephants . You can reach the top of this hill by safari jeep. There is a narrow lane that will take you through the woods and the hilly terrain.

If you are in Masinagudi, then visiting this hilltop should be on your must-do list. When at the top, you find a temple of Venugopala Swamy that is said to have been built seven centuries ago ! There’s also a beautiful bungalow near the top that belongs to the ruler of Mysore.

This is a hill that is located in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, this makes it one of the best places to visit in Masinagudi. It is situated at a height of 1450 m and Bandipur national Park is located on the highest peak of this hill. The best time to visit this place is from July to February and it is open from 8:30 AM to 4 PM every day.

There is also an old fort in the hill that is believed to have been constructed in the 13th century. There is also a Gopala Swamy Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. This place is 220 km from Bengaluru and 80 km is from Mysore and 41km from Masinagudi.

Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve

This particular Park who established in 1974 and it is located 15 km from Masinagudi. Inside the park one can witness Asian elephants, sloth bears, and other endangered species of tigers.

How to Reach

Masinagudi has good access by road. The easiest way to reach Masinagudi would be by boarding a train to either Mysore or Coimbatore and then hiring a cab to Masinagudi.

Take a flight to the Coimbatore International Airport from Chennai , Mumbai , New Delhi , Ahmedabad , Bengaluru or Hyderabad or from Singapore , UAE and Sri Lanka . Hire a cab from the airport to Masinagudi.

Coimbatore Junction Railway Station serves a number of major cities from across the country whereas Mysore Railway Station has trains coming in from Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Mumbai. You can travel to either of these cities and fix up a cab from the railway station to Masinagudi.

Masinagudi on the Ooty – Mysore route has easy access by road from all major cities of Tamil Nadu and from the neighbouring states of Kerala and Karnataka as well. The ideal way to travel to Masinagudi would be by car.

Getting Around:

Resorts might help arrange for vehicles and a guide, though otherwise there are places you can drive to yourself, while Mudumalai and Bandipur trips have safaris for getting around within the jungle.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Masinagudi has an all time salubrious weather. The most perfect weather for the ideal holidays is popularly the monsoon months followed by winter.

Summer (March – May):

Summers are not glaringly hot, but are warm and humid and you might spot animals at the waterholes. The season is generally dry, with occasional April showers in May.

Monsoon (June – October):

Monsoon seasons turn the region green and luxuriant. Rains are not very heavy here and it’s easy to find more animals out after the rains. The landscape looks pictographic. This is the best time for a visit to Masinagudi.

Winter (November – February):

Winter is cool and misty. It’s a great time for going on treks and exploring the hamlets in Masinagudi. More birds migrate to Masinagudi for winter and its idyllic to march off on bird watching.

Things to Do

The ancient jail of Gudalur:

Visit the ancient Jail at Naduvattom built way back in 1865, especially to accommodate convicts who would work in the cinchona plantations. Parts of the jail functions as a Tea Museum today. Hike up the Needle Rock and Frog Hill View Points and offer prayers at the Chandanamalai and Kusumagiri temples.

Paddy Bowl of the Nilgiris:

If you would like to spice up your visit to Masinagudi with some off road driving and river crossing in your car, with more of bird watching, visit Thengumarahada that lies close to the Bhavani Sagar Dam.

Tribal Temple Tours:

Call on the tribal villages of Masinagudi and hike off on a temple tour with the tribals to guide you through the undergrowth.

Journey through the jungles:

Trip to the Dam:

Drive through wild terrains, with herds of elephants crossing your trail, to the Marvakandy Dam. Sun rises and sun sets are the apt times of the day to wait at the water’s edge and watch for the deer and elephants to arrive at the water’s edge.

Kalhatti Falls:

A short trek away from the tea plantations of Kalhatti, the Kalhatti Falls is one of the most amazing touristy things to see on the Ooty – Mysore or Sigur Ghat road. Many do trek to the falls, but it does look spectacular from the main road as well.

The Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will take place in exactly 100 days (on 26 July) along the Seine in the heart of the French capital, with a flotilla of boats flanked either side by some of the country's most cherished buildings and cultural gems.
