Biden to meet with King of Jordan as US, Israel go 'back and forth' over Rafah invasion
WASHINGTON ― The Biden administration and Israeli officials remain at odds over Israel's planned military incursion in Rafah as President Joe Biden prepares to host King Abdullah II of Jordan next week.
Two recent virtual meetings between U.S. and Israeli officials had a lot of "back and forth" on how to proceed in Rafah, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Friday.
"We've expressed our concerns with a major ground invasion in Rafah. We've been very clear about that," Jean-Pierre said, adding that the U.S. has presented "an alternative course for Israel to dismantle Hamas."
"We believe Israel will take our concerns on board. They will take into account our consideration as they plan their their next operations," she said.
With pro-Palestinian protests erupting across U.S. college campuses, Biden faces increasing pressure politically to convince Israel to hold off on an invasion.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who has been traveling in the Middle East, met Wednesday with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to try and stop a full-scale Israeli invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza, which many believe could make a humanitarian disaster even worse and lead to thousands more casualties.
Blinken is trying to get Hamas to agree to a truce with Israel for a temporary cease-fire in exchange for the release of additional hostages held captive in Gaza. Netanyahu said Tuesday he plans to move forward with a Rafah invasion "with our without" a cease-fire deal .
After his meeting with Netanyahu, Blinken said he had still not seen a Rafah invasion plan by Israel that would protect civilians, like the U.S. has demanded.
"We cannot, will not support a major military operation in Rafah absent an effective plan to make sure that civilians are not harmed and no, we've not seen such a plan," Blinken told reporters.
Biden's meeting next week with King Abdullah II follows an earlier White House meeting the two leaders had in February. Jordan and other Arab nations have for months demanded an Israeli cease-fire.

Auburn wins back-and-forth finale on walk-off passed ball
Courtesy of Auburn Athletics
AUBURN, Ala. – In a back-and-forth series finale, Auburn scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning with the winning run crossing home plate on a walk-off passed ball to defeat Ole Miss 10-9 Sunday evening at Plainsman Park.
After a three-run double gave Ole Miss a 9-8 lead in the top of the ninth, Auburn was down to its last out with nobody on base in the bottom of the inning. Mason Maners drilled a triple down the right field line, and pinch hitter Kaleb Freeman drove him in to tie the game with a single to center.
“I thought from the start the guys hung in there,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “Maners’ triple was timely. Hitting that triple made the outcome possible.”
After tying the game, in a matter of five pitches, pinch runner Javon Hernandez advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored the winning run on a passed ball.
“Once I saw Kaleb get that big hit to tie the game, I had a feeling they were going to call on me to pinch-run,” Hernadez said. “I was ready. I was thinking this is a good time to be aggressive. We were fighting all day. As soon as I saw the ball low, I saw it hit off his glove or the bottom of his gear, I just took off.”
Tied at 5-5 in the seventh inning, Cooper McMurray and Cade Belyeu turned in back-to-back doubles to score the go-ahead run, but Ole Miss answered with a solo homer to start the eighth and tie the game.
Again, Auburn took the lead with a pair of solo homers from Cooper Weiss and Ike Irish in the bottom of the eighth, but the Rebels reclaimed the lead with the previously mentioned bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth.
Auburn ultimately scored the go-ahead runs in three consecutive innings en route to the win.
“A great job by the resiliency of the club,” Thompson added. “They’ve hung in there and competed enough to get that last punch back. I really wanted it for them.”
Ole Miss (25-22, 9-15 SEC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a two-run homer and three-run homer in the top of the first, but Auburn responded with a pair of two-out RBI singles from Belyeu and Caden Green in the bottom of the inning.
The Tigers (22-24, 4-20 SEC) drew a run closer with an unearned run in the second, and freshman reliever Cam Tilly recorded five outs on 16 pitches but was forced to leave the game with a lower back injury. Chase Allsup entered on short notice and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the third before ultimately pitching 4.2 innings and striking out a career-high nine batters, the most by an Auburn reliever this season.
“My whole goal was just to pick up Cam,” Allsup said. “I know that’s not how anyone wants to be taken off the mound, against their will or anything. I kind of tried to treat it like a start almost where I had all the time to warmup.
“Regardless of the score, I was just trying to take it a batter at a time,” Allsup added. “I was just trying to keep it where it was.”
Green collected his second RBI single in as many at-bats in the bottom of the third, driving in Belyeu to make it a one-run game.
Chris Stanfield made his second diving catch of the game in center field in the top of the fourth and drove in the game-tying run on a RBI double in the bottom of the inning. Deric Fabian led off the frame with a double of his own before advancing on Weiss’ sacrifice bunt and scoring on the double.
Tied 5-5 in the fifth, the Tigers threatened with three walks from McMurray, Green and Maners but a popup to second ended the inning and kept the score tied.
Allsup retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced with the career-best strikeout total, but back-to-back hits in the seventh put Ole Miss’ go-ahead run on third base with one out. However, a ground ball to third resulted in the second out at home and a grounder to short ended the inning without any damage. The Rebels managed just one hit from the first through sixth innings before threatening in the seventh.
“Allsup gave us a chance today,” Thompson said. “That’s a couple of outings where he threw the ball really well. He’s had control and command. He’s absolutely grown as a pitcher. He’s hung in there. I’m glad to see him have success. He persevered and was rewarded today.”
Conner McBride turned in a scoreless eighth inning but ran into trouble with two singles and a walk in the ninth. Parker Carlson recorded the final two outs for the Tigers and earned the win.
Five Auburn players in Stanfield, Irish, Belyeu, Green and Fabian all collected multiple hits, and the team’s 15 hits were the second most in a game this season.
Auburn travels to Georgia Tech (28-17, 12-12 ACC) for its second-to-last midweek contest Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT at Russ Chandler Stadium.

4 Zebras Broke Free on a Highway. A Rodeo Clown Stepped In.
One zebra was still on the loose, after it and three others escaped a trailer in North Bend, Wash. Dozens of people scrambled to help and corralled some of the animals.
4 Escaped Zebras Spotted on Washington State Highway
Four escaped zebras were seen on a road in north bend, wash., on sunday..
Those — are zebras. What is going on? We are here in North Bend, and somebody has lost their zebras. What the hell? What is happening? Oh, my God. Please get away. Hi, buddy.
By Michael Levenson
Four zebras escaped from a trailer on a highway exit in Washington State on Sunday, leading dozens of residents, police officers and volunteers to join in an effort to corral them.
Among them was a person with particular expertise in wrangling loose animals: David Danton, of Mount Vernon, Wash., who worked for nearly 15 years as a rodeo clown and rodeo bullfighter.
He and his wife, Julie Danton, had been driving home from a cattle drive in eastern Washington when they stopped to help the police and neighbors capture the zebras in North Bend, Wash., about 30 miles east of Seattle.
“It was kind of divine intervention — we happened to be in the exact spot and had the knowledge,” Ms. Danton said.
Mr. Danton said he built some makeshift gates out of rope, metal panels and a garden hose, and got two of the zebras to run into a pen on a horse farm. Then, he said, he helped build an “alleyway” out of metal panels to usher the zebras safely into a large trailer.
“It worked out as well as it possibly could have,” Mr. Danton said. “It’s just about being quiet, working them gentle and not getting excited.”
Still, he said, “Nobody trains you for wrangling zebras.”
Kristine Keltgen said she had bought the zebras from a farm in Washington State and was hauling them on Interstate 90 on Sunday to the petting zoo she runs in Anaconda, Mont., when she saw that the latch on the zebras’ trailer was loose.
Ms. Keltgen said that when she stopped on a highway exit in North Bend to fix the latch, the zebras “bolted out.”
“It happened really fast,” she said in an interview on Monday.
As the animals began scampering through traffic and onto residential streets, dozens of police officers and neighbors, along with the Dantons, rushed to the scene.
“Animal control showed up to help, police showed up, and every neighbor showed up to help — or just look at the zebras — because it’s not every day you get zebras in your neighborhood,” said Megan Dammann, a North Bend resident who runs a kennel-free dog boarding and doggy day-care business.
She said she raced to the area after seeing a post about the zebras on a community Facebook page. While the Dantons helped corral two of the zebras on a horse farm, residents nearby helped shoo a third zebra into a fenced-in yard and then shut the gate, Ms. Dammann said.
“It was kind of a fabulous group effort, which is what you do here,” Ms. Dammann said, whether the lost animal in question is a dog, a cat or a zebra. “In North Bend, that’s what you do.”
Whitney Blomquist ran to her front porch after seeing the zebras on her security camera. Three were outside her home, she said, wandering near an R.V.
“They looked right at me and walked right toward me,” Ms. Blomquist said. “You’d think you’d have to go to an African safari to be with zebras and here I am standing on my front porch, and they’re 10 feet away from me. It was just insane.”
Ms. Keltgen said she was incredibly grateful that so many strangers helped her capture three of the zebras, and she was hoping the fourth would still be found. It was still on the loose on Monday, she said.
“I met some of the best people you could possibly meet,” Ms. Keltgen said. “It was a negative experience that turned out to be very positive. We just have to get our last zebra back and we will be all better.”
Ms. Blomquist said she was keeping her eyes open.
“I keep looking at my cameras every time they go off,” she said. “We’re just aware it’s out there.”

Biden, Republicans spar over veterans' benefits amid debt ceiling showdown
Biden accuses the GOP of wanting to cut benefits. Republicans say he's lying.
The already fierce debate over the debt ceiling turned more contentious this week as Republicans and Democrats feud over the politically explosive issue of veterans' health care and other benefits.
Democrats can be expected to hit their claims hard when the Senate Budget Committee holds a hearing Thursday on the potential impact of House Republicans' 2024 budget.
President Joe Biden and his congressional allies are accusing House Republicans of voting to cut funding for veterans' services when they narrowly passed the budget proposal last week.
Republicans have shot back that Democrats are "shamelessly lying."
The bitter back-and-forth comes as lawmakers face a fast-approaching June deadline to reach a solution on the debt ceiling or risk an unprecedented default that would wreak havoc on the economy.
MORE: House Democrats prepare long shot plan to try to force debt ceiling increase
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Biden are set to meet next week for their first conversation on the issue in months. Biden's insisted the debt ceiling be raised without conditions on spending while Republicans are demanding steep cuts in exchange for a one-year debt ceiling increase.
The House GOP's Limit, Save, Grow Act would revert government spending to pre-inflationary, fiscal year 2022 levels, which would amount to a cut of 22% across agencies, and limit spending increases to 1% per year.
The bill, however, doesn't specify the exact agencies or programs that would be on the chopping block.
"The budget itself is silent on veterans and the Veteran Affairs budget," Carrie Farmer, the co-director of the RAND Epstein Family Veterans Policy Research Institute, told ABC News. "So, it doesn't specifically cut the VA budget, but it also doesn't specifically protect the VA budget."
The lack of a carve-out for benefits has been a point of concern for major veterans' groups. More than 20 organizations wrote a letter to Congress last week protesting the budget and urging lawmakers to add in such protections.
"If the proposed budget reductions were applied across-the-board, the impacts would significantly affect the delivery of care and benefits to veterans," the groups wrote, citing figures from Veterans Affairs that the budget could result in 81,000 jobs cut and 30 million fewer outpatient visits.
It's also opened Republicans up to attacks from Democrats, with Biden trolling the party on Twitter.
Republicans have pushed back, stating congressional appropriators will take care to protect veterans and defense funding as they determine what exactly will be cut.

"Republicans have always prioritized veterans in our budgets to ensure the men and women who have served have access to the care, benefits, and services they have earned," House GOP leaders wrote in a press release .
"Joe Biden and the Democrats are yet again shamelessly lying to the American people," Rep. Elise Stefanik, the No. 3 House Republican, tweeted on Monday.
Marc Goldwein, the senior policy director of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said it's "misleading" for the Biden administration to connect the budget as is to a specific list of policies such as VA job cuts or reduced telehealth infrastructure.
But he noted critics have a "very good point" that the overall discretionary spending caps sought by Republicans could have an impact on veterans.
"It would be very hard to meet those caps without touching veterans or defense," he told ABC News. "It would mean very deep cuts for everything else."
MORE: US debt limit: How a default could affect you
Farmer echoed that analysis, stating it would be "challenging" but perhaps not impossible to meet their proposed spending cuts without touching discretionary VA funding.
"Like anything else, the devil's in the details of how it is implemented," she said.
