13 Vacation Braid Styles for Your Next Trip
For anyone who enjoys a good recharging vacation during the spring and summer months, now is the time to be thinking about outfits and hair. Vacation braids are a common natural hair go-to because, in addition to looking incredible, they save so much time when you’re out trying to enjoy a new place, experience, or activity. You may have to carve out six hours to get them installed, but no one would do it if it wasn’t worth it.
We thought we’d round up a few vacation braids styling ideas that might catch your eye as you plan your next excursion, big or small. Ahead you’ll find 13 variations of box braids, cornrows, and some in-between styles that you can peruse to your heart’s content. Hopefully, it’ll make planning for that vacation just a little easier!
Fulani-Inspired

These braids are Fulani-inspired, but the style certainly has its unique flavor! First of all, we love a two-toned look on braids, and the blonde pops out here. And the claw clip is very current and super functional for keeping braids out of the way when necessary.
Waterfall Ponytail
Source: @sbm_beauty_
These half-up half-down braids look eye-catching with loose, curly ends. Loosely secure the front half of your hair with a hair tie to get good height on the ponytail and create the “waterfall” effect that almost looks like one super long ponytail.
Classic Straight Backs with Design
Source: @harmonicurls
Break up the simplicity of straight-back cornrows by throwing a design or two in there. Mairaly (pictured above) did her braids that turned out fabulously, but if you let your braider know you’re interested in designs, you’re sure to walk out of the salon with something amazing.
Half Feed-in Half Sew-in

The age of the sew-in is returning, and we’re not mad at it. If you’re into straight hair at the moment, but not so into straightening your hair, there’s always a good ol’ sew-in. The overall look is fairly simple, but so very clean and sleek.
Beach Wave Braids
Source: @caeliya.a
If your destination of choice is somewhere tropical with a beach, consider this wavy look. Leaving the ends loose and wavy is like having the best of both worlds if you don’t want to be fully committed to loose or braided hair–it works so well together.
Raindrop Braids

The creativity of this one is on another level. Who made the rule that we can only wear braids on the ends of our hair? We could have been wearing them like little “raindrops” all along.
Long Braided Pony
Source:@yaaskhalifa
That whip-action on a braided ponytail never gets old. With a bundle of synthetic hair (or real, if you’d prefer) you can have a sleek result with minimum effort.
Beaded Fulani-Inspired
Source: @dhatgirlbecca
This style is also Fulani-inspired but with a bit of a zig-zag pattern and some accent beads. There’s a tutorial on this exact look-over on Beauty and Curls on YouTube.
Bantu Knot Crown and Beads

Now that we’ve reclaimed bantu knots in Black hair culture, we’re never letting them go. They’re so versatile. And the braid work here is incredible–unless you’ve got top-notch skills, you’ll want to book an appointment for this one.
Small Knotless Braids

Source: @curly.strands
Have you ever wanted your knotless braids to look more natural and lay down close to the roots while still adding a lot of lengths? Natasha Robinson shows her followers the trick to achieving that look at home and saving a few hundred dollars.
Braided Ponytail Piece
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pearl Ransome (@pearlthestylist_)

Did you know you can buy braided bundles now? Try a 22-inch straight braided pony or a 30-inch curly braided pony from @naturalhairrocks for those quick on-the-go moments. The install takes less than 30 seconds and they come with convenient combs to keep everything in place all day.
Waves on Straight Braids
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lesley (@freshlengths)
Source: @freshlengths
Got a fresh install of straight braids but are suddenly feeling more of a wavy look? Heat up some water and braid the braids into chunky sections. Dip the ends in the piping hot water, and voilà. Insta-waves.
Elevated Omarion Braids
Source: @tatayshasha
Does anyone in the older Gen Z or Millennial crowd remember Omarion’s braids from his B2K days? The cornrowed front with individual braids in the back was a look that identified the singer in the early 2000s, and today we’re still rocking similar styles with a modern take. Having individual braids in the back also allows for styles like buns and ponytails, rather than committing to a pattern with cornrows.
Comment below which of these you’re most likely to wear on your next vacation.

An extra long bob with silver cuffs is a great protective style . And all without having to worry about styling every morning. Add silver cuffs to your braids for edgier vibes for a unique look. This easy braid style looks perfect on oval or heart-shaped faces. It requires minimal effort and maintenance. At the same time, ask your braider for their recommendation on length, especially if your face is more round and full.
#6: Braids with Beads
Some may label it as tribal or box braids and cornrow combination style. This look is very trendy and cute, as you can see. Box braid styles can take 3 hours to complete and use two braiding hair packages – Supreme Hair Super tz4 38′ was used. What I like about this hairstyle is that it won’t be heavy because of its length. It also gives you a different bob look than just regular box braids medium in length. I also like to see the zig-zag parts; for this length, I prefer beads rather than leaving them as it is. I feel like the beads add a pop to the style.

Long bob braids are a great way to protect your hair while still having fun with style. These versatile medium box braids with curls can be worn in various ways, from sleek and straight to voluminous curves. Plus, they’re easy to maintain. #9: Gorgeous Mid-Length Braids
I’ve found that gorgeous mid-length braids are perfect for creating a look that will make you look stylish. I always recommend keeping your hair moisturized. This will help maintain the shape of your style and keep it looking great for longer. For extra definition, use a small amount of styling gel to add texture and hold to your braid styles. To finish the look, spritz with hairspray for added shine and protection against humidity.

#22: Trendy Gold Cuffs
This look is refreshing. It’s something new and different from regular box braids that lack colors. It’s lightweight, easy to manage, quick to do, and one of my favorite protective hairstyles.
#23: Simple Braids with Side Part
This box braid look with a side part and a subtle ombre is ideal for anyone from pre-teen in high school to an adult in a professional work environment. I love that you can wear this style with multiple parts, different lengths, and even in a ponytail.
#24: Small Medium Box Braids
You can finish the hair with a black rubber band. It’s discreet and elegant! You can finish the hair with jewels and add color strings for a stylish look. You can ask for medium knotless box braids if you want a pain-free braided style. If you have this type of hair, don’t use a particular product on your medium-length knotless braids because sometimes the braids can be oily. Although, every week, moisturize your scalp with coconut or shea butter.

I’m completely useless when it comes to even giving myself a simple braid, so what did I do? I took the plunge and cut off my long hair into a pixie cut. Less fuss when getting ready, easier to clean, and I use less precious shampoo from those tiny 3 oz bottles.
Many girls chop their hair off for travel. Glad it worked for you!
I don’t know how to braid
I don’t either but you can follow the tutorials and they show you how to create the hair styles 🙂
That’s all fine, but what if you have slightly shorter hair and they are not that thick?
Your wish is my command: https://travelfashiongirl.com/simple-and-cute-short-hair-styles-for-travel/ Hope you like this post Cute Short Hair Styles 🙂
I was so excited about the sock-bun tutorial, especially!! I have always wondered how those girls pulled off such perfect buns! Im a big fan of head wraps too although it gets waaayy too hot for them in the summer time! I bike and snowboard a lot and I loathe helmet hair so I do a lot of french side braids and twists. And im heading off to South America for 6 months soon so these tips will def come in handy!
Yes, me too! I finally have hair long enough to create a proper bun!
Braids and twists are the only thing keeping me going right now in SE Asia with the humidity…
Glad this helped!
I’m always rocking a french braid when I travel. It keeps everything out of my face and looks cute. Practice at home before you go and soon enough, you’ll be so quick with your fingers, you’ll be able to french up your hair on the top bunk of a sleeper train. Its not easy, but can be done!
good idea! wish i was better at braids!
That sock bun technique is awesome! I wish my hair was long enough for it.
I actually let my hair grow just for my travels. The sock bun technique is great on or off the road. What’s your travel hair style preference?

4 Travel-Friendly Hairstyles for Your Next Trip
Styling your hair takes a little more effort when you’re traveling. No matter if you’re all set to go on a trip with your friends or spend time with your loved one in an exotic place, it can be challenging to find a low-maintenance hairstyle.
While it’s always a good idea to carry along essential hair styling tools and products for long vacations, you’ll want to spend more time enjoying your trip than styling your hair. But at the same time, you want to rock a beautiful hairstyle and capture Instagram-worthy photos. Here are some tips to get you through.
Table of Content
What if Your Hair Lacks Length and Volume?
If you’re concerned about your short, thin, or less voluminous hair, we recommend you get a set of clip-in extensions for your next trip. Clip-in wefts are best for traveling because you can apply and remove them yourself within a matter of minutes.
Clip-in human hair extensions are low maintenance, you can use them to create many different styles, and they look entirely natural. These extensions instantly add volume, thickness, and length to your hair. And, with a little bit of care, you can wear them comfortably throughout your vacation.
Be sure, however, to buy a set of high-quality human hair extensions like Zala clip-in hair extensions . These extensions are silky and smooth, last longer, and blend perfectly with natural hair.
4 Easy and Low Maintenance Travel Hairstyles
You want simple travel-friendly hairstyles that require little to no restyling or maintenance during your excursion. Simple hairstyles also don’t require you to pack too many products and styling tools.
Here’re some beautiful but easy hairstyles for your next trip.
1. Fishtail Braid
Braids are among the most popular travel hairstyles as they cause less hair breakage than styles like ponytails. A fishtail braid is simple to achieve but gives you a sophisticated look.
Follow these steps to create the fishtail braid:
- Start off by dividing your hair into two equal portions.
- Grab a small section from the outer area of the left portion, swaddle it over the tip of the left part, and then insert it under the right portion.
- Repeat step 2 on the next side, taking a small section from the right side and tugging it under the left section.
- Continue this process, alternating between the right and left segments until the braiding is complete.
- Finally, use a hair tie to hold your hairstyle in place, and you’re good to go!
2. Messy Bun With a Headband
The messy bun is our favorite travel hairstyle because you can achieve it within 10 to 15 seconds. Perfect for airplane travel! On top of that, it adds a dash of style to your overall look and hides any oily roots.
Here’s how you can get this hairstyle:
- Make your hair into a ponytail and then form it into a bun of your choice, beginning from the base.
- Put a hair tie around the bun while leaving out some loose strands.
- Take your preferred headband and cloak it around the bun.
This hairstyle also works best with clip-in hair extensions in case your hair lacks length and volume.
3. Half-Up Top Knot
Yet another quick hairstyle, the half-up top knot is your best travel companion. It works perfectly even if your hair has greasy roots. In fact, it makes you look your very best even with a little bit of dirty hair.
Here’s how to get this hairstyle: Apply a tiny portion of dry shampoo (powder version) to the roots of your hair. Then, take the top half section of your hair and form it into a messy top knot.
Hurray, you’ve achieved the half-up top knot! That was quick, wasn’t it?
4. Low Side Braid
Whether you’re traveling in a car or an airplane, you don’t want your hair to rub against the headrest because it can be pretty damaging and uncomfortable. With a low side braid, you can rest assured this won’t happen.
This travel hairstyle is the easiest of all; just tug your hair to the side and create a braided hairstyle. Now use a hair tie to hold it in place, and you’re done! For the strands above your collarbone, it is a good idea to use a bobby pin to keep them in place.

Side Braid Instructions:
- Step 1 / For this style start by bringing all of the hair over the left shoulder.
- Step 2 / Then divide the hair into three smaller sections and cross the side strands under the middle strand.
- Step 3 / Continue the braid down the section and then once the braid reaches the bottom you can go back over it, pulling on the edges to make the braid wider.
- Step 4 / Tie off the end with an elastic band.
- Step 5 / Then take a small piece of hair and wrap it around the elastic band and tie a second elastic over the bottom of the wrapped piece making sure to include the ends and this will hold the wrapped piece in place.
Two Fishtail Braids Instructions:
- Step 1 / Begin by dividing the hair into two equal halves, a left and right side.
- Step 2 / Take one side and divide it into three sections.
- Step 3 / Begin a regular braid crossing the side strands over the middle strand.
- Step 4 / Then combine two sections together and braid the rest of the section into a fishtail braid.
- Step 5 / Half way down the hair go back over the braid, pulling on the edges to make the braid fuller.
- Step 6 / Then just continue the braid down to the ends, pull on the edges to make the braid bigger, and tie it off with an elastic band.
- Step 7 / Then repeat the same steps braiding the other half into a second fishtail braid.
Two Dutch Braids Instructions:
- Step 1 / Start by dividing the hair into two equal halves and tie off one side.
- Step 2 / Then simply braid each half into a dutch braid. As a reminder, when creating a dutch braid, the side strands are crossed under the middle strand and small sections of hair are brought into the braid as you work your way from the forehead down to the nape of the neck.
- Step 3 / Once all of the hair is brought into the braid continue braiding the section down to the ends.
- Step 4 / Tie off the bottom of the braid with a little clear elastic band.
- Step 5 / Then repeat the same steps with the hair on the opposite side.
Tip: You can go back over both braids, pulling on the sides to make them fuller or leave them tight against the head, it just depends on your own personal style.
Half Up Fishtail Braid Instructions:
- Step 1 / First, divide off a section of hair on both sides of the head right above the ears and tie it together at the back of the head.
- Step 2 / Then with this tied off section, create a fishtail braid by splitting it into two sections and crossing small pieces of hair from one half over to the opposite side.
- Step 3 / Continue the braid as far down the section as you prefer and I like to pull on the sides of the braid as I go to make it fuller and more casual and then just tie off the end of the braid with a clear baby elastic.
Low Bun Instructions:
- Step 1 / For this style, start by combining all of the hair together at the nape of the neck.
- Step 2 / Take a hair band and wrap it over the hair only pulling the ponytail half way through.
- Step 3 / Then twist the left hand which will twist the hair and the hair band at the same time and then grip the base of the ponytail with the left hand.
- Step 4 / With the right hand, pull the hair band over the hair. This will create the base of the messy bun.
- Step 5 / Then take any hair left sticking out and tuck it back into the hair band.
Dutch Braid Instructions:
- Step 1 / Begin by gathering a section of hair at the top of the head and split it into three sections.
- Step 2 / Cross the side strands under the middle strand while bringing in new sections of hair and working down the back of the head until the braids reaches the nape of the neck.
- Step 3 / Then continue the braid down the section of hair without bringing in any new hair.
- Step 4 / Then tie off the end of the braid with a clear elastic band.
Bonus Sleep Bun Instructions:
This next style really isn’t a wearable hairstyle but it;s great if you got a blow out or curled your hair before the trip and want to take a nap without getting any kinks in your hair.
- Step 1 / Simply combine all of your hair together at the top of your head.
- Step 2 / Twist it together and wrap it into a spiral or bun on the top of your head.
- Step 3 / Then secure the ends with a claw clip.
- Step 4 / Once you’ve arrived at your destination simply let down your hair and it’s still maintained a bit of the curl or volume you had put into it before the trip.

I love all of these!
Unfortunately I just resort to possibly the world’s messiest bun and just leave it on my head like a very sad, but colourful potato.
I really want to try out some of these though :).

51 Medium-Length Hairstyles That Are Easy and Effortless
@sofiarichiegrainge / @justinemarjan / Getty Images / Byrdie
In terms of haircuts, people tend to fall into one of a few categories with short and long hair hogging most of the spotlight. But, don't forget about the cut that bridges the gap between the two: medium-length hair. To prove that this length is more than just a stop on the journey to long hair from short hair, we tapped professional hairstylists and rounded up the 51 most flattering shoulder-length hairstyles for all textures and types—instructions included.
Read on and get ready to screenshot some medium-length hair inspiration for your next salon visit.
Meet the Expert
- Joseph Maine is a celebrity stylist and Color Wow Artistic Director.
- Jonathan Colombini is a celebrity hairstylist and L'Oreal ambassador.
- Michelle O’Connor is a professional hairstylist and the Artistic Director at Matrix.
Why are Medium-Length Haircuts Popular?
"Mid-length haircuts can be adapted for all hair textures," says celebrity stylist and Color WoW artistic director Joseph Maine. "For fine hair, consider blunt cuts to create an illusion of thickness. Layered cuts can add movement and body to curly or wavy hair. For thick hair, subtle layers can help reduce bulk and make hair more manageable.
If you're looking for a style that best suits your face shape, mid-length cuts can be easily adapted for every shape. "For round faces , longer layers or side-swept bangs can add length and create a more elongated shape," says Maine. "For square faces , soft layers can help soften angular features." And if you have a heart-shaped face (like Reese Witherspoon), "a mid-length cut that adds volume around the jawline can help balance out the face," he adds.
Low Chignon
Getty Images
Medium hair doesn't offer a ton of room to play around with updos, but a low chignon doesn't require much length to look great. This one leaves just a couple of strands out to flutter in the breeze for an undone and romantic feel.
To replicate, brush the hair back with a boar and nylon bristle brush, moving at a slight angle from the temples to create a bit of lift. Create a low ponytail with a small elastic. Apply more hair oil and shine spray to the ponytail with the hands, then brush through. Attach another elastic to the bottom of the ponytail, then twist the ponytail and spiral it into a bun. Secure with a bobby pin tucked into the base and finish with hairspray.

S-Shaped Waves
Loose, S-shaped waves are easy to achieve with a flat iron, says celebrity hairstylist and L'Oreal ambassador Jonathan Colombini, and work well on shoulder-length strands since there's less weight to drag them down. "I’m all about natural textures or lived-in textures," says Colombini. "Try putting just a small bend either with a curling iron or flat iron wave and avoiding a traditional curl. It’s the best way to get at least a couple of days out of your style."
Curly Topknot
Ciara's overflowing curly topknot brings an ethereal quality to an otherwise formal updo. It's also a great option for those growing out their hair or for cuts with lots of choppy angles and layers.
This is a great style to turn to when you are between washes as it embraces texture and gives off an effortless vibe.
Blunt Bangs
Beyonce's super blunt micro-bangs are balanced out with a bit of length and easy texture. If your hair is already textured, take a small flat iron to the bangs, which will ensure that they lie flat on the forehead. "Medium-length hair generally requires a moderate level of maintenance," adds Maine. "Regular trims every 6-8 weeks are necessary to keep ends healthy and to maintain length."
Half-Up Beach Waves
"You may experience at this length that not all the hair is long enough to be gathered into a top knot," says Colombini. "Instead, try a half up half down top knot." The coif requires little extra effort, styled normally and swept into the placement of choice. A spritz of texturizing spray will create the soft, beachy wave seen here on Kiernan Shipka.
Messy Side Braid
Elizabeth Olsen's side braid is all about volume. And the loose pieces– courtesy of Olsen's layered strands– work in favor of the trendy boho look. Start by parting your hair deep on one side before loosely plaiting and securing it with an elastic. Don't forget to add a little volumizing mousse along the way.
Spiraled Curls
@imaanhammam / Instagram
Model Imaan Hammam proves that sometimes all you need is proper curly hair care to level up your look. To style medium-length curls: "Set it and forget it!" says Colombini. "Using either a moisture cream... with a slight hold or a curl-enhancing gel (whichever you prefer) more focused on taming and preventing frizz. Once you’re completely dry, feel free to break up the twist in the palms of your hands."
"Note: never rake your fingers through; this... can create frizz," says Colombini.
Curly Ponytail
A slicked-back, high ponytail is a great look for super curly hair that hangs towards the shoulders. First, "gather in a pony and let your curls fly free," instructs Colombini. You can brush some gel through to tame down flyaways and comb down baby hairs along the scalp if needed.
True Ballerina Bun
A true ballerina bun looks exceptionally elegant and takes any outfit to the next level. It works especially well for thicker, slightly longer hair that can really fill out the bun silhouette (think just below the shoulders to collarbone length).
Center-Parted Volume
@marsaimartin / Instagram
A center part and a lot of volume work beautifully for curls. "Be pretty liberal with the amount of product you apply," advises Colombini. "After you have an even saturation, take small subsections of your hair and twist; this will create a direction for your hair to fall into rather than letting it fly away."
Thick Dutch Braid
@ thevicstyles / Instagram
One thick braid down the back (or brushing the shoulders!) is classic and cool for any length. "Braids can be fun but more challenging on short hair," says Maine. "If looking to incorporate a braid, just create a small three-strand braid. Once you have tied it with an elastic, start at the top of the braid and move your way down the length, pulling it outwards for more fullness."
Bejeweled Mermaid Waves
For fancy occasions, consider adding some rhinestones or pearls to subtle waves for a mermaid-inspired vibe. This jeweled look can be overwhelming on longer hair but feels right at home on a lob like Aimee Song's. Play up your natural beachy texture by drying with a diffuser and slightly scrunching the strands. Finish off the mermaid look by dotting on hair gems for an ethereal glow.
Funky Highlights
Laura Polko
Want to play with color but don't want to commit to the maintenance of a full dye job? Copy Charli D'Amelio's fun and playful look by contrasting your natural shade with a few hidden peeps of color. Ask your stylist for highlights that are only visible when the hair is tucked behind your ears.
Chunky Lowlights
@mileycyrus / Instagram
Chunky highlights have made quite the comeback but Miley Cyrus's grungy, rock'n'roll lowlights make the case for a darker contrast. A deeper blend adds dimensional depth that can create the illusion of fullness and density to thinner strands. You can also apply the color to a " money piece " or one single strand in front.
Milkmaid Braid
Another braid style that doesn't require a whole lot of length, this milkmaid plait worn by Lucy Boynton is perfectly red carpet-appropriate while remaining unfussy. Bonus: The style is easy and doesn't require any French braiding. Just divide your hair into two sections and braid the ends of each side using a regular three-strand braid technique. Pull the first braid up and over, secure with bobby pins, and repeat on the other side paying attention to adjust the braids so there isn't a seam where they overlap.
Sleek and Straight
Sleek and straight is Maine's go-to way to style medium-length hair. "My favorite way to achieve this is with a blow dryer/brush two-in-one," says Maine.
Smooth Waves
@zoeydeutch / Instagram
"Medium-length is a chic style in itself, so don’t overthink it with styling. Simple waves or nice and sleek can be super stylish," says Maine. Glossy, structured waves give Zoey Deutch a sophisticated, Old Hollywood vibe. If the hair is on the fine side, professional hairstylist and Artistic Director at Matrix, Michelle O'Connor, suggests adding layers and angles around the face for extra detail and undergoing "regular trims to support the cut that it is in."
Full Curls With Bangs
Tracee Ellis Ross's full, shoulder-length curls have a whole lot of definition and shine. This is absolute proof that curly bangs can look fabulous. Curls are prone to dryness, so we recommend moisturizing curl enhancers to hydrate thirsty strands.
Grown-Out Shag
@bleachlondon / Instagram
The shag is a classic medium-length hairstyle. "These cuts are all about texture," says Maine. "Use a texturizing spray and scrunch for a messy, lived-in look." Choppy layers and grown-out bangs make this look effortless to maintain.
Kristen Ess
Stylist Kristin Ess takes a low ponytail to more fantastical heights with a lush black velvet bow and dramatic curls. To recreate, pull your hair back into a ponytail and secure with a hair tie. Allow some loose tendrils out around your face and finish off by hooking a larger-than-life bow onto your hair tie.
Balanced Curls
@goldenbarbie / Instagram
When it comes to getting the medium-length curly hair of your dreams, you need to start with the foundations. "Invest in a great haircut," says Maine. "Medium length curly shapes can vary from triangular to boxy to round or oval. It’s important to find one that fits your face shape." This is a great example of a curly, mid-length style that is balanced.
Accessorized Updo
Accessories like clips and jewels can elevate any simple style. Take Saoirse Ronan's elegant look as proof: French fringe and a glittery barrette (not to mention statement earrings) do all the work here.
Relaxed Center Part
@selenagomez / Instagram
Sleek or relaxed, a center-parted look is always a good idea on mid-length hair. To copy Selena Gomez's tousled style, we recommend using a round brush to blow-dry your hair for volume. Follow with a curling wand to add some lived-in texture to the ends and finish with your favorite texture spray for added grit.
Side-Parted Loose Waves
Super loose waves on mid-length hair give a sexy, yet effortless vibe that you can achieve in many ways. You can use a curling rod to create S-shaped curls and brush them out with a paddle brush for a tousled look. Or you can go the heat-free route by using flexi-rods on blow-dried hair for a wavy effect. Either way, it's wise to top off your style with shine or texture spray for an undone finish.
Fluffy Spiral Curls
Spiral curls on mid-length hair are fun when dressed up or down—case in point: Angela Bassett's shoulder-grazing, fluffy ringlets. Apply a setting mousse to your strands before styling to mimic the same definition.
A mid-clipped style looks good on any length, but we love it on Keke Palmer's shoulder-sweeping curls. On a fresh roller set or blowout, section out a small middle section at the top of your head and secure it with a decorative hair clip. Easy-peasy.
Voluminous High Ponytail
@badgalriri / Instagram
Looking for an instant facelift? Skip the surgery and take that ponytail to unprecedented heights instead. O'Connor suggests "using a good mousse to keep the hair bouncy and finish off with a lightweight spray to keep hold yet still be flexible."
Side Parted-Coils
Whether you have naturally curly hair or are rocking extensions, you can try a deep side part like Gabrielle Union's. "Play up natural volume that you would get from that texture using [a light hold gel] to add control but be lightweight and still have great movement," says O'Connor.
Braided Ponytail
@yarashahidi / Instagram
Braids are another great option for those transitioning between lengths or choppy layers. Yara Shahidi's curls may be braided back, but they don't conceal any of that hard-won length.
Soft and Subtle Waves
@lucyhale / Instagram
"Unlike long hair which can get weighed down, mid-length hair can provide more volume and body, especially with the right cut," notes Maine. Lucy Hale's lived-in waves create the illusion of increased density. "Add volume with a round brush and hairdryer," instructs Maine. "Use a volumizing product for added body."
Slicked-Back Ponytail
@jastookes / Instagram
To us, there's no easier way to update a tired, high ponytail than by slicking it back as Jasmine Tookes does here. On those days you don't have time to wash your hair, lean into the extra grease, and turn it into a polished style. Level up by taking a piece of hair from the bottom and twisting it around the elastic for a seamless finish.
Ponytail Locs
@hallebailey / Instagram
Shoulder-grazing hair like Halle Bailey's still gives ample opportunity to play with locs and texture. Bailey styles her locs up into an ultra-high ponytail that cascades around her shoulders for a flirty look. Use products that are designed to keep your scalp healthy and your hair moisturized.
Playful High Bun
@oliviahancock_ / Instagram
Like most updos, this bun starts as a center-parted ponytail secured high on the head. Use a fine-tooth comb to brush the hair back and apply some pomade to give you the slicked-back look sans flyaways. Braid the ends and spiral into a ballerina bun. Now the fun part: Once secure, pull and tug to expand the knot and give it a bit of disheveled elegance.
Textured Topknot
@ yagirlstar / Instagram
To switch up an updo, play with volume versus sleekness. By leaving texture at the crown of the head, this iteration has a much softer appeal. We love how this look incorporates natural curls and flyaways for a textured appearance.
90's Minimalist Updo
@ sofiarichiegrainge / Instagram
Claw clips are back, people! And, like Sofia Richie Grainge, we're totally here for it. If you've forgotten the "how to" (or, maybe this is your first time around) follow our lead: Part the front of your hair down the center, brushing the rest back so that it sits nicely into the ponytail shape. Keeping the base at the nape of the neck, pull the rest of the ponytail up and secure in place with the clip. Allow any ends or too-short front pieces to fall around the clip/face.
Retro Half-Up
@ justinemarjan / Instagram
"Half-up styles like topknots, space buns, and half ponies all look great on mid-length hair," notes Maine. Actress Ella Balinska makes a serious case for retro sweetness with a glossy half-up style that descends into bouncy ends. "You want to keep the mids and ends of the hair moisturized to prevent split ends and dryness," adds O'Connor. And don't forget to reach for products that will keep hair hydrated and bouncy.
Curtain Bangs
@ sukiwaterhouse / Instagram
Face-framing bangs and graduated layers instantly take Suki Waterhouse's simple, medium-length cut to the next level. According to Colombini, "If curtain bangs are cut correctly, there is minimal styling involved—this is the point of having them." However, to get that quintessential '70s vibe, he suggests styling with a round brush. "I suggest a round brush no larger than two inches in diameter placed at the top of the bangs and with a blow dryer dry from underneath."
Sculpted Updo
@ lizzobeeating / Instagram
When it comes to glam, Lizzo certainly knows how to serve. With high-shine gloss, sculpted bangs, defined edges, and a gravity-defying ponytail, the masterful coif showcases the full range of a mid-length cut.
The Wet-Look Style
@zendaya / Instagram
Zendaya's effortless wet-look hair is an easy way to style a bob or other medium-length cut. Achieving this glistening, tousled look is easy: Let hair air-dry and brush through with some product.
Fringed Messy Bun
@kimkardashian / Instagram
Kim Kardashian's fringed updo is a masterclass in effortless glam. To rock your own, leave your fringe loose and gather the rest of the hair into a messy high bun. Add pins as necessary for a secure hold that's still discrete.
Effortless Bun With Defined Edges
@winnieharlow / Instagram
No fringe? No problem. Winnie Harlow's effortless bun forgoes the fringe for defined edges. The look is still soft in that coveted I-just-woke-up-like-this way but frames the face in an entirely different manner.
Sleek Topknot
@jlo / Instagram
Think of this sleek bun as your formal topknot. Pull hair up in a high ponytail and secure with a hair tie. Divide the ponytail into two sections and twist them together. Wrap the twisted section around your hair tie and secure with bobby pins. (If your hair is curly or wavy, consider using a flat iron to straighten hair for a sleek look.)
French-Pinned Bun
@lindseymetrus / Instagram
Drop the bun from the top of the head to the crown for timeless sophistication. Forgo the usual hair ties for an elegant French pin to hold the style in place. Spray on a little hairspray to smooth down any flyaways and to hold the style in place.
Double Buns
@dualipa / Instagram
Space buns look effortless and work especially well on medium-length hair because they won't be too small or too large. This style is quick and easy and suits any texture.
Simply part your hair down the middle, section the top part from the bottom, and clip it. Create a ponytail where you envision each bun and secure with a hair tie. Twist the hair and wrap it around the hair tie, making a bun. Use bobby pins to secure the bun in place. Spread or fan out the bun with your hands and repeat on the other side.
Half-Up Curls
@beyonce / Instagram
Need to give curls a boost? Beyonce's luscious spirals look extra vivacious in a half-up style. The coif adds volume through the addition of height without sacrificing any length. Now that's some real hair magic.
Curly Copper Ringlets
Getty Images/Amy Sussman
Issa Rae's stunning copper-colored curls are the star of the show. If you have thick ringlets, simply wash, style and diffuse to get the curls of your dreams. But if you have kinky-textured hair, blow dry first, then use a mini curling wand to create voluminous curls.
Tousled Curls
Swan Gallet/WWD via Getty Images
Kylie's tousled waves give "I woke up like this vibes" but with a touch of whimsy. To keep the style as sleek as possible, style your hair with an anti-frizz oil.
Flipped Middle Part Lob
Getty Images/Michael Tran
Most people hate the awkward phase between chin to neck-length hair, but Emma Stone makes the case that a flipped lob is incredibly chic. We especially love the idea of tucking your strands behind the ears—it gives the style an effortless appeal.
Wispy Half-Updo
Getty Images/Axelle/Bauer-Griffin
The beauty of Reese Witherspoon's gorgeous half updo? It's the perfect day and evening look. This style would look best on day-old hair as it needs a bit of grit to keep it from looking like you tried too hard. If you want to get a little playful, you can add in a big bow to the bun.
Slick Side Part
Getty Images/Taylor Hill
In case you haven't noticed, wet-look hair is having a moment . But there's definitely a fine line between looking greasy and looking like you just got finished with a frolic in the ocean. You'll want to use a mixture of gel and cream, rake through the hair, and diffuse until damp.
Mega-Size 'Fro
Pietro S. D'Aprano/Getty Images
Viola Davis's jumbo-sized afro actual goals. And yes, it is achievable with medium-length hair. You can use a wide toothed comb to gentle comb your hair upwards, Or, if you're not opposed to heat, you can gently stretch out your hair and blow dry in sections.
There are tons of tutorials online on how to cut layers into medium-length hair at home, but unless you're a trained cosmetologist, we recommend going to a professional for the best look possible.
Long story short—yes. Depending on what method you are using to start your locs (two-strand twists, comb coils, braids, etc.), longer hair might be easier to loc than hair on the shorter side.
