2024 BORACAY TRAVEL GUIDE with Requirements, Sample Itinerary & Budget

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Any conversation about tourism in the Philippines feels incomplete without at least a mention of Boracay . After all, it is undoubtedly the country’s most popular destination, topping various publications’ lists of best islands not just in Asia but in the world.

This massive attention transformed what used to be a quiet village into a developed — or in the eyes of some, overdeveloped — tourist destination. Resorts of all shapes, sizes and classes have sprouted along its shining coast. Lanes of restaurants and shops mushroomed along its streets and alleys. And two airports have been built to serve the growing number of locals and visitors coming in and out of the island.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING BORACAY

It’s easy to see why Boracay has been enchanting millions of tourists a year. Even for non-believers, its sheer natural beauty will smack you in the face as soon as you set foot in the island’s biggest asset — White Beach . This sparkling picture-perfect strip must be what paradise is made of. We’ve been to countless other beaches around the world, but only few could rival Boracay’s shimmering sand.

Boracay Sand

Boracay’s development has also made it a destination for everyone. Whether you’re a budget backpacker or a luxury traveler, young or old, solo or on a honeymoon, with friends or with family, you’ll find something to fall in love with here. Plus, most conveniences that we enjoy in the city can also be found here.

Boracay Island is part of the Municipality of Malay , which is a part of the Province of Aklan, which is a part of Panay Island. Caticlan, the barangay on the mainland closest to Boracay, serves as the gateway to the island. Both the Caticlan Airport and the Caticlan Jetty Port are located here.

Here are more bits about Boracay.

  • Location: Boracay is within the municipality of Malay, province of Aklan in the Philippines. Mainland Aklan is part of Panay Island.
  • Languages: Aklanon and Ati are the native languages. But locals, especially those working in the tourism industry, can fluently speak and understand Tagalog and English.
  • Time Zone: UTC+8 (Philippine Standard Time). The Philippines is in the same time zone as Singapore and Beijing, one hour ahead of Thailand, and one hour behind Japan.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.81, EUR 1.66, SGD 2.45 (as of July 2023).
  • Modes of payment: CASH, primarily. Some establishments accept credit cards, but most smaller stores and eateries accept only cash or GCash.

BORACAY TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Because Boracay is visited by millions of tourists, the local government is monitoring and regulating the entry of visitors. Here are the requirements that you’ll need to prepare and present upon entry.

  • Tourist Arrival Form. To be accomplished upon arrival at the Caticlan Jetty Port. I also found this online form , but in my experience, even if you accomplish this, a physical form will still be filled out on site, which makes the online form pointless.
  • Valid ID. For Filipinos, any valid ID will do. For foreigners, passport.

A confirmed hotel or resort booking is no longer required, but it remains HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Boracay has a list of accredited resorts, hotels, inns, and guesthouses. To see the complete list, check out: LIST OF ACCREDITED BORACAY RESORTS AND HOTELS! ✅

But given the sheer number of lodging options in Boracay, where is the best place to stay?

WHERE TO STAY IN BORACAY

When looking for a place to stay in Boracay, it is important to be familiar with its geography. Boracay is a bone-shaped island politically divided into three barangays (villages): Balabag, Manoc-Manoc, and Yapak. Manoc-Manoc is the southernmost barangay, where the jetties are located. You’ll be encountering the names of these barangays when checking out accommodations online. But for tourism purposes, it’ll be easier to split the island not by barangay but by beach.

Boracay Island Map

Most people who haven’t been to Boracay are under the impression that it has only one beach because most media features focus on its main stretch — White Beach. And while it is the longest and most popular, it is not the only strip of sand here. The island is hemmed by over a dozen beaches!

White Beach Boracay

White Beach , the busiest, most crowded, and the most stunning beach on the island. This has the highest concentration of accommodations. It is also the longest beach, split into three boat stations:

  • Station 1 is the northern section of White Beach, in Barangay Balabag. It is the quietest of the three stations and what many regard as the most beautiful, thanks to its wide bed of white sand. It’s also where you’ll find the iconic Willy’s Rock (grotto). However, while there are a few budget-friendly options, most resorts here are on the more upscale end of the spectrum.
  • Station 2 is the epicenter of all the action in Boracay. It is the busiest part of the island, where you’ll find the greatest concentration of lodging, dining, and shopping establishments including D’Mall, arguably the most visited area here. It’s also the most accessible and most connected part of the island. The catch is, it’s loud, crowded and always abuzz with activities.
  • Station 3 is tucked in the southernmost end of White Beach. Because the sand here is narrower and steeper, it is not as popular or as crowded as Station 2, but it is still pretty accessible. The area is also brimming with more affordable inns, hostels, and guesthouses.

Aside from White Beach, you’ll also find other accommodations in other parts of the island.

Boracay Island Station Zero

  • Station 0 is not part of White Beach. It is the nickname given to Punta Bunga Beach, a cove shared by Shangri-La Boracay, Crimson Resort and Spa, and Movenpick Resort and Spa. These are all high-end resorts, which means only a few guests have access to the place. Prices per night at these resorts range from PHP 11,000 for a room to PHP 30,000 for suites to PHP 70,000 for super posh villas.
  • Diniwid Beach is a short patch of sand north of White Beach, separated only by a promontory. Although seemingly isolated, there is a cemented walking trail along the beach that connects Diniwid to White Beach. Some of the establishments you’ll find here are Microtel by Wyndham and Dinibeach Bar & Restaurant.
  • Banyugan Beach serves as the private cove of Shangri-La Boracay. Yes, Shangri-la has access to two coves.
  • Boracay Newcoast is a 150-hectare township-style property occupying the northeastern edges of the island, between Lapuz-Lapuz Beach and Ilig-iligan Beach. Located here are Savoy Hotel and Belmont Hotel, among others. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet away from the crowd, it’s something to consider. It’s not the most accessible, but the hotels here provide free shuttle service to White Beach.
  • Bulabog Beach is another long stretch hugging the eastern side of the island, almost parallel to White Beach. The sand here isn’t fine, but it is also very accessible and is most well-known as the jump off point for many exciting water activities and great for sunrise watching.

If you’re on a budget, another place to consider is the inland area between White Beach and Bulabog Beach. You’ll find many pleasant guesthouses and apartments for rent here like Dakong Amihan and Villa D’enghien.

Best Neighborhood to Stay

Boracay Station 1

What’s best depends on why you’re in Boracay in the first place and how much you’re willing to shell out for accommodations. We wrote a more detailed comparison of each area here: BEST AREA TO STAY IN BORACAY!

But here’s a quick summary:

  • If it’s your first time, any of White Beach’s three stations is ideal. This will give you easy access to everything.
  • If you’re on a budget, try looking for affordable places to stay in Station 3 and in inland areas. Beachfront properties tend to be much more expensive. The border between Stations 1 and 2 have a number of relatively cheap backpacking hostels, too.
  • If you’re after peace and quiet or you’re celebrating a special occasion, Boracay New Coast and Diniwid Beach may be worth a look.

I personally prefer White Beach Station 1 because it is the quietest but still very accessible. But Stations 2 and 3 are also good and have more pocket-friendly options.

IMPORTANT! If you wish to stay in Boracay, NO BOOKING, NO ENTRY. You must show proof of booking or reservation with any of the accredited hotels.

How to get to boracay.

All tourists traveling to Boracay must pass through Caticlan, a barangay in mainland Aklan. It has two ports that passengers may use to get to the island, depending on the season: Caticlan Jetty Port and Tabon Port . You don’t need to worry about it because they are not too far apart and every driver in Caticlan knows which port is operational at any given time.

Caticlan Jetty Port Boracay

The first step to reach Boracay is to make your way to Caticlan. You have several options.

  • By plane, via Caticlan Airport
  • By plane, via Kalibo Airport
  • By ferry, via 2GO Travel

The island is served by two airports: Kalibo International Airport (KLO) , which involves around 2 hours of travel time; and Caticlan International Airport (MPH) aka Boracay Airport , which is just 15 minutes away from either sea port. All major airline in the country flies to both airports, but Caticlan offers more options from morning to evening.

Hence, if you’re coming from Manila, the fastest and easiest way to Boracay is by flying to Caticlan Airport.

Boracay Caticlan Airport Arrivals Terminal

But if budget is limited and you have a lot of time, you may take an overnight ferry from Batangas Port to Caticlan, too.

Caticlan to Boracay

Caticlan Airport to Boracay Tricycle Terminal

If flying to Caticlan, you will deplane at the Arrivals Terminal located on the other end and on the other side of the runway, far from the Departures Terminal. After collecting your luggage, exit the terminal building and book a tricycle to Caticlan Jetty Port or Tabon Port. The driver knows which port to go to. We have a more detailed transfer guide here: Caticlan Airport to Boracay .

  • Fare: PHP 150 per tricycle, maximum of 2 passengers or PHP 75 per person.
  • Travel time: 10 minutes.

It doesn’t need to be a tricycle ride. If you want a more comfortable, hassle-free experience, consider booking a packaged transfer service. Aside from the air-conditioned van transfer from Caticlan Airport to the jetty port, you will also be assisted through the port processes and the driver can help you with your luggage. The price already includes the van airport transfer, boat crossing, and multi-cab hotel transfer.

✅ CHECK TRANSFER PACKAGE RATES HERE!

Van Transfer Boracay to Caticlan Port

If you’d rather travel on your own, upon arrival at the jetty port, enter the building and follow these steps:

  • Find the Documents Check counter and fill out the Tourist Arrival Form. Only one per group is needed to queue up and accomplish the form. But the staff will check the IDs of ALL passengers and hotel booking. The number of passengers must match the number of guests in the hotel booking. Once cleared, you’ll be given a slip.
  • Pay the fees. Here are the current rates: – Terminal Fee: Regular, PHP 150; Seniors/PWD/Student, PHP 120; Kids 5yo and below, FREE – Environmental Fee: Local, PHP 150; Foreigner, PHP 300 – Boat Fee: PHP 50 For a regular domestic tourist, the total amounts to P350, one-way.
  • Proceed to the Boarding Area. You’ll need to fill out the form on the boat stub. Once accomplished, exchange the boat stub with a boat seat number.
  • Board your assigned boat and find your seat. The ride to the island should not take more than 20 minutes. Depending on the season and the weather, the boat will land at either Cagban Port or Tambisaan Port. The process is the same regardless.
  • Ride an e-Trike or multi-cab to your hotel. The fare depends on the location of your hotel. – e-Trike fare: If shared, PHP 15-50 per person. If special/chartered trip, PHP 100-400 per e-trike. You’ll find the full fare matrix for e-trikes below. – Multi-cab fare: PHP 250 to Station 2 per vehicle, maximum of 10 pax.

Kalibo Airport to Boracay

Bus and Van Service from Kalibo to Caticlan Port

If you’re coming in via Kalibo, the first step is to make it to Caticlan Jetty Port, and from there, the process is the same. Here are your options to get from Kalibo Airport to Caticlan:

  • OPTION A: LOCAL BUS. Take a tricycle to the bus terminal and board a Ceres bus bound for Caticlan. Fare: PHP 147. This is the cheapest way to reach Caticlan from Kalibo. Once at Caticlan Jetty Port, follow the steps at the previous section (Caticlan to Boracay).
  • OPTION B: TOURIST BUS/VAN. Look for “non-packaged” vans or buses that can take you directly to Caticlan Jetty Port. Fare should be only around P250. Travel time: around 2 hours. Once at Caticlan Jetty Port, follow the steps at Caticlan to Boracay section above.
  • OPTION C: PACKAGED BUS/VAN TRANSFER SERVICE. If, for whatever reason, you don’t want to do the transfers on your own, a good option is to book a packaged transfer service. Aside from the comfortable transfer from Kalibo Airport to Caticlan, the price also covers the boat crossing, terminal fee, environmental fee and HOTEL transfer. You will also be assisted through the sometimes confusing process at the jetty port. This is great for those traveling to Boracay for the first time and traveling with kids, PWDs, or elderly. You can book them on Klook, too.

Below are where you can book packaged bus/van transfer services.

Manila to Boracay by 2GO Ferry

If you don’t like flying or the airfare is too much, you can also travel by sea. Caticlan is also the gateway to Boracay for those traveling by ferry. However, there is no direct ferry from Manila to Caticlan. Instead, you’d need to make your way to Batangas Port first.

2GO Travel has overnight sailings from Batangas to Caticlan every day. The ferry leaves Batangas Port at 9pm and arrives in Caticlan at either 8am or 11am, depending on your chosen route. Some sailings involve a stop in Odiangan, Romblon, but others go directly to Caticlan.

  • Departure: 9:00 PM
  • Arrival: 8:00 AM or 11:00 AM (the next day)
  • Travel time: 11-14 hours (overnight)

We created a video showing the entire ferry process on our YouTube channel . You can also watch it below.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Boracay E-Trike

The e-tricycle or e-trike is the primary mode of transportation around the island. Most tricycles have fixed routes and will pick up or drop off passengers along the way, UNLESS you charter the entire vehicle for a “special” trip. A special trip means you’ll have the entire vehicle to yourself.

Here’s the approved e-trike fare matrix:

Boracay E-Trike Fare

If you’re on a budget, be willing to share the tricycle with other passengers. Tell the driver “individual” and they’ll know you’re not arranging a private ride. Fare should be between PHP 15 and 20, depending on the distance.

That said, if you’ll be an inconvenience to other passengers — e.g. you’re soaking wet from swimming or you have a big luggage in tow — just charter a special trip.

You may also arrange an e-trike tour of the island. Although drivers usually have a suggested itinerary, it is completely up to you. Rate is per hour, anyway. However, for island tours, only 4 pax are allowed per vehicle.

Here are the details.

Fare: P500/hour (per vehicle) Maximum of 4 pax per e-trike

Usual Stops:

  • Diniwid Beach
  • Bulabog Beach
  • Ilig-iligan Beach

By Hop-On Hop Off (HOHO)

Boracay Hop-On Hop-Off Shuttle

Boracay now has a Hop-On Hop Off (HOHO) service, operated by Southwest Tours in partnership with Top.ph. The HOHO uses air-conditioned shuttle or mini-bus units with CCTV cameras and wi-fi. It runs from Tambisaan and Cagban ports on the southern edge of the island all the way to Puka Beach in the north, making stops in Stations 1 to 3 and even Newcoast along the way. Here are the stops.

Boracay Hop On Hop Off Stops

  • Fare: PHP 13-32, depending on distance/stop.
  • Schedule: Ideally, there’s a mini-bus at any given stop every 15 minutes, from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Only cashless transactions are accepted, so you need to purchase a HOHO QR Pass before using the service. But if you feel like you’ll be using it multiple times a day, consider getting a 1-Day HOHO Unlimited Pass Card. It normally costs PHP 200, but you can get a discount if you book with Klook.

THINGS TO DO IN BORACAY

Boracay may be a small island but it is packed with natural attractions and exciting activities that travelers of all ages could enjoy. In this post, we’ll enumerate these briefly, but if you want a more detailed description of each tourist spot, you may check out our dedicated post about it: THINGS TO DO IN BORACAY .

White Beach

Boracay Station 1 Paraw

Boracay’s greatest treasure. This shining, shimmering, splendid beach is perhaps the first to come to mind when we think of Boracay. It is the island’s longest beach, measuring about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), lined with picture-perfect coconut trees. Its biggest asset is its fine, white sand, something only a few can rival or come close to. Here are some of the activities you could enjoy at Boracay’s White Beach:

  • Swim and laze on the sand , of course.
  • Check out Willy’s Rock , the island’s iconic grotto.
  • Watch the sunset . White Beach faces west, so it’s a magnificent sunset spot.
  • Standup paddle . Rates: 30-Minute, PHP 500; 1-Hour, PHP 700. Book here!
  • Crystal kayak . Rates: PHP 250/person for 15-20 minutes.

Although crystal kayak is available at White Beach, you could enjoy it for a much lower fare at other beaches like Puka Beach.

And because White Beach faces west, it’s also a fantastic sunset watching spot! Boracay displays some of the most gorgeous sunsets in the world. No wonder a lot of tourists come waiting for it on the beach every single day.

Photo and Video Session

Friends Jump Shot in Boracay

Boracay is a fantastic place to capture wonderful moments and immortalize them in photos or videos. And now, you can easily hire a professional for a 2-hour photo/video shoot at any Station along White Beach! The bright turquoise waters in the background will make each shot breathtaking. Great for couples, families, and friends (barkada)!

Island Hopping

One of the most popular activities in Boracay. Most of the island hopping packages offered are on group tour basis — meaning, you’ll be sharing a big boat with other tourists as you visit other beaches and snorkeling sites. You’ll be following a strict itinerary that you must follow, around 40-60 minutes per stop.

Tours usually start and end at Station 1 and/or Station 3. Operators also use almost identical itineraries, with only a couple of variations, usually the lunch stop and the snorkeling site. Here are the common stops and the corresponding entrance fees:

Boracay Island Hopping Itinerary

  • Puka Beach , no entrance fee
  • Snorkeling Site , PHP 45
  • Crystal Cove , PHP 300
  • Magic Island (not all tours), PHP 250

Price: PHP 800-900 per person , inclusive of buffet lunch and sometimes, use of mask. However, this does not include entrance fees and snorkeling fee.

Jump off point : Station 1 or Station 3

If it’s your first time in Boracay, go ahead and join an island hopping tour. But to be honest, if you’ve tried island hopping in other Philippine destinations like Palawan, Bohol, or Cebu, you might get a bit underwhelmed. Boracay’s key assets are within the main island itself, not so much in the smaller isles surrounding it.

boracay island travel requirements

Land Tour (e-Trike or Multicab)

Another way to explore Boracay is by land. For this, you need to charter an e-trike, which costs P500 per hour (approved tariff). For an island tour, an e-trike driver is only allowed to accommodate up to 4 passengers per vehicle.

If you’re part of a bigger group, instead of hiring multiple e-trikes, consider a multi-cab instead. This was what we did on our most recent trip. A multi-cab is allowed up to 10 passengers. At P700 per hour, this ends up much cheaper and efficient.

  • E-Trike Tour PHP 500/hour Maximum of 4 pax
  • Multi-cab Tour PHP 700/hour Maximum of 10 pax

Just hail an e-trike or multi-cab at any time and tell the driver you’re interested in an island tour. Or if you’d rather have a tour arranged beforehand, here’s the contact number of the drivers we booked when we were in Boracay:

  • E-trike: Kuya Ambro +63 943 1304164
  • Multi-cab: Kuya Bong +63 939 823 8198

Unlike island hopping which has a fixed itinerary, on an e-trike or multi-cab tour, you have total control of the stops and duration. The driver usually has a suggested route, but it is completely up to you. Here are the usual stops:

Boracay Land Tour Itinerary

  • Lugutan Mangrove Park
  • Sinagpa Beach
  • Cujo’s Keyhole

None of these sites charge an entrance fee. For Lugutan Mangrove Park, however, you must register first before setting foot into the site.

As you walk across this open-air mall, you’ll be tempted by stores selling all sorts of “essentials” from souvenirs to swimming gear, and a smorgasbord of iconic snacks, from Mango Halo to Coco Mama.

One thing Boracay has that many other beach destinations in the Philippines don’t is vibrant nightlife. While it’s no longer as wild as the pre-2018 era, it’s still quite fun; thanks to its roster of party places, many of which are beachfront.

Boracay Nightlife

Some of the most popular bars and clubs are:

  • Paraw Beach Club
  • Summer Place
  • Two Brown Boys. Get 5% OFF here!

Our favorite drinking spot is Two Brown Boys , located along an inner alley near D’Mall (on the other side of the main road). It’s an island institution whipping out servings of its signature cocktails alongside giant burgers.

WHERE TO EAT IN BORACAY

Boracay Two Seasons Four Cheese Pizza

If there’s one reason I love coming back to Boracay — other than the beach itself — it’s absolutely the food. While the island doesn’t have a globally revered traditional cuisine, it is bursting at the seams with reputable restaurants and food spots. Whatever you’re craving, you’ll probably find it in the island: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Indian, East Asian, Middle Eastern, and of course, Filipino food.

We wrote a separate, more comprehensive article describing some of the most popular restaurants in the island that we were able to try. READ: BORACAY TOP RESTAURANTS !

Boracay Ice Desserts

Boracay is also known for its iconic desserts and snacks, including:

  • Ice Flakes . Our favorite! Order the mango or coconut bowls. Get 10% OFF here! ✅
  • Halo Mango . Order mango ice cup (P250), crushed ice topped with real mango chunks and mango soft serve.
  • Jonah’s Fruit Shake . Has several stores along White Beach.

  • Ube Mama . Ube ice cream with ube pudding strands and palitaw balls, crowned with cornflakes.
  • Real Coffee and Tea . Try its calamansi muffins (P70 apiece).

Admittedly, however, most of the well-known Boracay restaurants are on the expensive side. But it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find budget eateries. We created a dedicated post enumerating affordable food spots in the island. READ: BORACAY AFFORDABLE RESTAURANTS!

To compare, let’s use the Big Mac Index. In Boracay, the price of a Big Mac (solo) at McDonald’s is PHP 188 , which is PHP 17 costlier than the price in Manila and PHP 33 higher than in Batangas.

Same with Andok’s whole chicken, which costs PHP 405 in Boracay but only PHP 365 in many other places in the Philippines.

BORACAY BEACH SAFETY & RULES

Authorities strictly implement a number of policies throughout White Beach, including:

  • NO drinking of alcohol
  • NO illegal drugs
  • NO littering
  • NO loud music
  • NO fire dancing
  • NO pitching of umbrella
  • NO beach beds/chairs
  • NO taking home of sand

Safety first, so don’t dismiss the warning flags that are raised at specific spots along the beach. Here’s what each color means:

Boracay Beach Flag Warnings

  • Red with white line: No swimming (water closed to the public)
  • Plain red: No swimming (high hazard)
  • Purple: Dangerous marine life
  • Yellow: Be cautious (medium hazard)
  • Green: Safe to swim

SAMPLE BORACAY ITINERARY

The itinerary above will cost you a minimum of PHP 3490 (USD 63, EUR 57.75, SGD 85) , excluding flights and hotel.

But please add plenty of allowance to accommodate any price adjustments and other possible incidental expenses. I recommend allocating at least PHP 3,990 (USD 72, EUR 66, SGD 97) for this itinerary.

If you’re able to snag a room with daily breakfast for PHP 1500/night/person, prepare a total of PHP 6990 (USD 126.20, EUR 115.60, SGD 169.60) , excluding airfare.

You can still reduce the costs further if you skip the island hopping altogether and have a full-day land tour instead on DAY 2.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is the best time to visit boracay.

November to May is the best time to visit Boracay.

boracay island travel requirements

Weather-wise, the months of February to May are the driest, which means there’s very little chance that unexpected showers would ruin your itinerary. However, it is also considered high season (peaking during Holy Week), so prepare to share the island with thousands of tourists!

Boracay Algae

The April-June period is also the peak of algal bloom at White Beach. In these months, the waters near the shore are covered by algae. Based on our most recent visits, March is when the algae is starting to make an appearance although not yet noticeable. It’s totally inescapable in April and May. By early July, the algae should be gone.

If you don’t like big crowds and algal bloom but you also want a relatively pleasant weather, November to February is the most ideal time to visit as long as you stay away from the days leading to Christmas and New Year.

Is Boracay safe?

Yes, Boracay is generally safe.

Like many touristy destinations, there are overcharging practices here and there, but scams are not as rampant as in other beach destinations in Southeast Asia. It’s also best to keep an eye on your belongings and don’t leave them just anywhere.

Again, take note of these emergency contact numbers:

What type of power plug / socket is used in Boracay?

Electricity Info: 220V, 60Hz. Plug and socket Type A.

boracay island travel requirements

What is the tipping custom in Boracay?

Just like in other places in the Philippines, tipping is NOT mandatory in Boracay. Restaurant bills usually include a service charge but it does not always go to the servers.

If you enjoyed the service, feel free to tip. A tip of 5-10% of the bill is generally well-appreciated.

Are there ATMs in Boracay?

YES, lots. You’ll fine most of them along the main road near Stations 1-3 and around D’Mall.

There are also money changers and Western Union branches throughout the same area.

Are drones allowed in Boracay?

YES, but you need to secure a special permit from the local government. The permit will specify the dates and times when and the areas where you can use your drone.

Example: This special permit is granted to Yosh Dimen to use his drone only at the front beach on June 15 and 17, from 6am to 6pm only.

The last time we checked, permit fee was PHP 1300 per day. It’s a bit steep, but you know what’s steeper? Fines. If you’re caught flying your drone without a permit, you’ll be fined around double the permit fee.

Only a limited number of drone permits are issued per day.

How to get back from Boracay to Caticlan Airport?

Boracay Night Boat

It’s easy. Just trace your steps back:

  • Ride an e-trike to either Tambisaan or Cagban Port , whichever is operational at the time. If you’re coming from Station 2, it should be PHP 150 for a private ride.
  • At the port, pay the terminal fee and boat fare , which cost PHP 150 and PHP 50 respectively. You’ll be given a boat card with a seat number.
  • Board the assigned boat and find your seat on board . Travel time is 20 minutes.
  • At Caticlan Jetty Port, find the tricycle terminal and ride one to Caticlan Airport . It should take just 2-3 minutes because the airport’s departure terminal is very close. If you don’t have heavy luggage in tow, you could even travel on foot to get there.

It just gets more complicated at night. If your flight is scheduled in the late evening or early morning, expect to wait longer at the Cagban/Tambisaan Port. Within these hours, boats to the mainland are few and far between. Below was the timetable when we visited in July 2023. This may have changed already.

Boracay Night Boat Schedule

That said, if there are enough passengers, the boat will leave as soon as it is full.

Bottom line, add plenty of time allowance when traveling back to the mainland at night.

Boracay Island is located in Aklan province. It is close to 2 international airports: Caticlan and Kalibo. From either airport, you need to travel to Caticlan Jetty Port where you’ll ride a ferry to the island.

Caticlan is considered the main gateway to Boracay, as it is only 30 minutes away from the island. From Caticlan Airport, there are tricycles waiting to take you to the jetty port. Fare is P50 per person.

You can book your transfer from Caticlan Airport to your hotel via Klook.

Kalibo is a popular option among budget travelers. It is located about 2 hours away from Boracay Island. From Kalibo Airport, there are vans bound to the port. Fare is around P250-300 per person.

You can book your transfer from Kalibo Airport to your hotel via Klook.

Once you arrive in Caticlan Jetty Port, pay the registration fees and secure a boat ticket. The boat transfer to Boracay takes about 15 minutes. Ferries are available daily, from 4AM to 10PM.

Once you arrive at Boracay Island, there are e-trikes waiting to take you to Station 1, 2, or 3. You can share a ride with other passengers or charter the whole tricycle. Fare is P30 per person if sharing and P150 per ride if chartering the whole e-trike.

Take note that drivers can only drop off passengers along the main roads, so if you are booked in a beachfront accommodation, you may still need to walk. If carrying heavy luggage, considering booking transfers from your hotel.

Where to Stay in Boracay

Boracay is famous for its 3-kilometer stretch of fine-sand beach called White Beach. White Beach is divided into three stations: Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3. You can walk this stretch — it will take about 30 minutes from Station 1 to Station 3.

Boracay Beach Station 1

Station 1 is the best place to stay in the island. It is quiet, relaxing, and home to high-end beachfront resorts. It’s also where you can find the famous Willy’s Rock.

Station 2 is the main tourist hub in Boracay. It’s the best option if you want to stay in the middle of everything. It has numerous shops, cafes and restaurants, and activities. It offers a mix of mid- and high-end accommodations.

Read our review of Henann Park Resort in Station 2.

Station 3 is ideal for budget tourists who want to stay in a quiet part of Boracay. Although this area has fewer commercial establishments, the beach is uncrowded and it only takes a few minutes to get to Station 2 by foot.

Aside from these stations, there is also Station Zero where you can private luxury resorts such as Crimson Resort and Spa Boracay. If you are looking for other relaxing places to stay, there are also alternative beaches and mountainside resorts you can book in the island. If you’re a solo tourist looking to mingle, you can also find party hostels in Boracay .

Top Things to Do in Boracay

Here are the best activities you can do in Boracay.

Boracay Island in the Philippines

The main reason you’re visiting Boracay is to experience its famous shores, so pack up a towel and sunscreen and sunbathe, swim, or just watch the beautiful paraw sail boats along the shore. Don’t forget to witness the island’s sunset, which is said to be one of the best sunset spots in Asia .

Island hopping is one of the popular activities in Boracay. This activity takes around 5 hours and may cover the following: Puka Beach, Coral Garden (snorkeling), Magic Island, Crystal Cove, Crocodile Beach, Ilig-Iligan Beach, and Ariel’s Point (cliff-diving) .

Book an island hopping tour via Klook.

Similar to an island hopping tour, a land tour via e-trike will take you to the best spots in the island, including Puka Beach. Other land tour destinations include Tambisaan Beach (with picture taking in a kawa), Bulabog Beach, Keyhole, New Coast Beach, and/or Ilig-Iligan Beach.

You won’t run out of outdoor activities to do in Boracay, whether it’s a chill one such as parawsailing or something more adventurous such as helmet diving , parasailing , paddle boarding, jet ski, banana boating, and more.

In addition, the island is also a favorite of windsurfers and kitesurfers due to excellent wind conditions. Divers will also appreciate the plentiful dive sites around Boracay. Over 20 are located only a short boat ride away and advanced divers can access world-class sites such as Yapak Wall, Virgin Drop, Camia, Tribird, Punta Bunga, and Crocodile Island.

One of the newest activities offered in the island is crystal kayaking. A guide will take you out to sea so you can pose for some social media snaps with the clear water of Boracay in the backdrop.

Finally, if you’re looking for something unique, Boracay also offers mermaid swimming lessons!

Boracay Island is a haven for different restaurants, so you can always find a place to satisfy your cravings. Whether it’s for traditional Filipino cuisine or else Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Mediterranean, Indian — you’ll find it in the island.

Of course, a Boracay food trip won’t be complete without going to a seafood restaurant for fresh oysters, clams, and other local harvests.

Here are the current rates for the activities in Boracay ( Updated as of 2023 ).

A lot of the activities vary in price because there are no standard rates, so you might find differences in tens to hundreds of pesos depending on the tour agency or vendor. It’s best to compare prices when you’re in the island.

Where to eat in Boracay

One thing that you’ll find about Boracay is everything is expensive, especially the food. So it’s best to prepare your wallet if you want to explore the culinary scene in the island.

Cafe Maruja in Boracay

Here are some of our favorite restaurants:

  • Nalka Seafood Restaurant . This open-air restaurant offers unlimited seafood buffet . Ideal for sunset dining for the beautiful sunset views. Loc: Station 1.
  • Café Maruja . This restaurant serves delicious Buddha bowls and tropical smoothie bowls. Loc: Station 1.
  • Nagisa Japanese Restaurant . An underrated restaurant that serves amazing Japanese food like sashimi, curry, etc. Loc: Station 3.

Check out this updated list of Must-Eat Restaurants in Boracay .

You should also check out popular stalls such as Coco Mama (ice cream in a coconut bowl) and Jonah’s Fruit Shakes in Station 2.

One of the most commonly asked questions when visiting Boracay is where to find budget restaurants? Most restaurants in the island have expensive menu because the ingredients have to be brought in by boats, but there are still plenty of budget options.

Fast food restaurants like Jollibee , McDonalds , and Mang Inasal are popular dining options. There are also small restaurants that offer good food at reasonable rates, such as Meze Wrap and BunBun . The island also has ordinary eateries often located in small alleys that offer rice meals and silogs.

Meze Wrap - one of the best restaurants in Boracay | Boracay food trip

When in Boracay, you should try fresh seafood!

If you want to go on tradition, head to D’Talipapa where you can buy fresh seafood from wet market stalls and have them cooked in a restaurant (aka paluto service).

There are also Boracay buffet restaurants where you can indulge in seafood and local delicacies. Nalka Seafood Restaurant offers unlimited seafood buffet. Henann Crystal Sands Resort also offers seafood buffet dinner, while Henann Regency Resort and Spa is said to have the best buffet in the island which includes seafood and other options.

Nalka Seafood Restaurant in Boracay

Night life in Boracay was toned down after its rehabilitation and new regulations were put in place (i.e., drinking is no longer allowed in the beach), but you can still enjoy a night out in the island.

Head to OM Boracay Bar , Kasbar Boracay , and 360 Lounge Bar for drinks and performances. Certain spots such as Wave Bar and Lounge also have fire dance performances.

Buy your pasalubong at D’Mall , a huge open-air commercial space where you can find various shops and souvenir stalls, as well as cafes and restaurants. It is hard to find pasalubong outside of Boracay.

  • When is the best time to visit : Boracay is a popular destination all-year-round, so expect that there will always be a lot of tourists in the island. That saying, it’s off-peak season starts from July to November . During this period, you can score hotel and resort discounts. February and the shoulder season from late May to early June are also lean periods. If you arrive during peak season (summer and holidays), expect long lines in activities such as island hopping, helmet diving, etc.
  • How to get around : You can walk from Station 1 to Station 3. Trikes is also a common transport.
  • ATMs : There are ATMs in the island. A lot of establishments also accept GCash.

Here are important travel tips to Boracay before you go.

  • Don’t forget to bring your OOTDs and reef-friendly sunscreen in your beach packing list !
  • A lot of vendors will approach you to offer tours and activities. It may feel pushy and annoying. Just firmly decline if you are not interested.
  • Beware of common “scams” in the island. Always ask for the full price when going to a seafood paluto, especially if you are asking the restaurant to do the shopping for you. Ask for the additional fees in island tours, since entrance fees are often not included in published rates. You should also be careful when getting hair braids — some vendor will quote a price and then ask additional money for the actual braids used. Lastly, you may get approached by locals offering free buffet or lunch — what they won’t tell you is that you will need to attend a 2-hour presentation for a membership program to get these free lunches.
  • Lastly, it is easy to visit Boracay DIY. But packaged tours are also worth considering, since it’s easy and you can even get discounts if you’re in a group.

How to Get to Boracay

Ferry going to Boracay

Boracay is accessible from the major cities of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the three primary island groups of the Philippine archipelago .

Before traveling to Boracay, make sure you have a printed voucher from your pre-booked accredited Boracay resorts and hotels . You will be denied entry to the island if you don’t hold a voucher from your resort or hotel.

Going to Caticlan Jetty Port

The main jump-off point is Caticlan Jetty Port, but there are different ways to get there. Here are four transport options when traveling to Caticlan Jetty Port:

It is the fastest route when going to Boracay. It is also the most accessible since flights to Boracay  come from different parts of the Philippines (including Manila to Boracay flights ) and even several countries outside the Philippines.

If you’re coming from Manila, the capital of the Philippines located in Luzon, take a 1-hour domestic flight from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Caticlan. You can also easily book  Boracay to Manila flights . Flying in from Clark to Boracay via Caticlan is also an option if you’re coming from the Northern part of Luzon or if you want to avoid the traffic in Manila. Clark to Boracay flights are usually cheaper than Manila.

If you’re coming from the Visayas, there are direct Cebu to Boracay flights from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. If you’re coming from Mindanao, there are direct flights from Davao Francisco Bangoy International Airport to Caticlan. From Caticlan Airport, take a 10 to 15 minute tricycle ride going to Caticlan Jetty Port.

  • Book this Cebu to Boracay package

Kalibo Airport

A flight to Kalibo in Aklan, a more significant island near Boracay, is significantly cheaper than a direct flight to Caticlan. However, you will need to travel for 2 hours from Kalibo Airport to Caticlan Jetty Port.

When you land at the Kalibo Airport, you will find a multitude of transportation options that will take you to the Caticlan Jetty Port. Be sure to check whether it’s cost-effective or if it will be more expensive for you. Your land travel options to Caticlan include riding a bus or van.

By Ferry

Most locals ride a ferry going to Boracay as it's much cheaper. If you don't mind traveling for long hours or a couple of days, then this mode of transportation may be for you.

Batangas Pier

If you’re coming from Manila or Southern Luzon, you can go to Boracay by sea through the 2Go Travel ferry. It takes about 9 hours from Batangas Pier to Caticlan Jetty Port. From Manila, you will need to board a bus to Batangas Pier from the Cubao or Pasay bus terminals.

Your  2Go Travel  fare, on the other hand, will depend on the accommodations you choose.

By Direct RoRo Vessel

If you would like to take the more scenic but much longer trip to Boracay, you can ride the Roll On, Roll Off (RoRo). RoRo ships are vessels that are designed to carry wheeled vehicles.

By Bus from Manila and Board a RoRo

Several bus companies are maintaining the Manila-Caticlan route. You can hop on a bus from either the Cubao or Pasay terminal. Your total travel time for this route is approximately 13 hours, excluding the boarding time between trips.

Cubao/Pasay to Batangas Pier (2 hours)

RoRo trip from Batangas Pier to Calapan, Mindoro (2 to 3 hours)

Land travel from Calapan to Roxas Port, Mindoro (2 to 3 hours)

RoRo trip from Roxas Port to Caticlan Jetty Port (4 to 5 hours)

By Private Car from Manila and Board a RoRo

You can also take the RoRo route using your own or hired car. It can be a good option when traveling in a big group or with your family and if you don’t mind the long travel hours. The same bus route will apply, except that you will drive to the Batangas Pier, and you must book your RoRo tickets on your own when you get there.

You can’t charter your vehicle into Boracay Island, so you need to leave your car at the Caticlan Jetty Port for a parking fee per night. Depending on the size of your vehicle, this may cost you a lot. You also need to pay for the passenger and terminal fees during vessel transfers.

After the registration, you will take a short ferry ride to Cagban Jetty Port on Boracay Island. From here, you can take another tricycle or your hotel’s private van to your chosen accommodations.

If you’re a solo traveler, it’s better to join a group so you can save more money on transportation.

Getting Around Boracay

The primary public transportation vehicles in Boracay are electric or motorized tricycles, motorbikes, and shared or private tours. Depending on where you're staying and your budget, it's essential to take note of the following types of transportation for a more convenient getaway.

You can explore some of the parts of the island by walking around. Just make sure to bring a handy map or download an offline map with you so you'll know how to go to the tourist spots in your itinerary. There are walking and hiking trails, too, if you plan to trek to farther places such as Mount Luho.

By Tricycle

The tricycle is the standard type of transportation in Boracay, especially if you're traveling from one station to another. Take note that during off-peak hours, special rides (private) might be the only ones available in the area and can be much more expensive than the regular ones (shared). Make sure to bring enough cash with you and ask how much you'll be paying beforehand to avoid any extra charges.

By Mountain Bike/Motorbike

If you're passing by tricycles, chances are you can see motorbikes moving around the area too. It's not regulated, but many locals use it because of the convenience it offers. You can also rent one if you want! It gives you the freedom to check out the other tourist attractions on the island without having to pay extra for a driver.

By Shared/Private Tours

If you're not keen on commuting, there are various Boracay tours  that include hotel pick-up and drop-off. It's hassle-free and convenient, especially if you're in a big group.

Resorts in Boracay

You can’t enter the island without a printed booking confirmation from your chosen resorts or hotels in Boracay. But before booking your accommodation, make sure that the establishment is on the Department of Tourism’s Accreditation List.

Beach Resorts

Most travelers in Boracay stay at beach resorts . It is more convenient because you get easy access to the beaches. Resorts are also a good place to stay if you're on your honeymoon in the Philippines . Most of their amenities also focus on creating a relaxing atmosphere. Depending on your resort, you might get access to luxurious spas and indoor pools.

If you're looking for a more comfortable place to stay, then it might be best to stay at a hotel. In Boracay, you can find a lot of this type of accommodation; luxury accommodations (some of which offer  Philippine luxury vacation packages ), mid-range, and budget hotels are all available, some even offering free cancellation. Most basic amenities can be found in hotels, such as en-suite bathrooms, minibars, and free WiFi.

For budget backpackers, staying at a hostel is best. Hostels have dorm-type rooms and single rooms. The common denominator is they usually offer shared bathrooms only.

Boracay map of things to do and activities

Your trip to Boracay isn’t complete without experiencing the wide variety of activities the island offers. While the new rules have prohibited some events after the island’s rehabilitation, your Boracay trip will still be full of  things to do and places to see . Here are some of our highly suggested activities that you can add to your itinerary:

White beach Boracay

The island is known for its powdery white sand and gorgeous, pristine beaches. Even though it's a small island, you can’t reach all the beaches of Boracay on foot. You can either join Boracay island hopping tours or ride a tricycle going to other beaches.

Boracay White Beach - It stretches about 4 kilometers, and walking along its shores should be part of your itinerary! Walk towards Station 1, and you’ll see Willy’s Rock. It’s a must-see grotto that you won’t miss. Go Beyond Station 1, and you’ll find Steve’s Cliff, where a foreign hotel owner was buried. His grave can even be seen from the beach.

Diniwid Beach - This is much less crowded than Station 1 or Station 2 of White Beach. Lounge around and swim at Diniwid Beach, but make sure to head back to Station 1 before high tide.

Boracay Travel Guide featured image

Note: This post may include affiliate links. Read more about this here .

So you’re planning to visit Boracay?

Well, you’re in for a treat!

Boracay is EASILY one of the very best beach destinations not just in the Philippines, but in the WORLD.

Not only is it breathtakingly beautiful, but it’s also extremely convenient – you won’t have ANY problems here.

But alright, alright. There are a few things you need to know before you come visit.

That’s why I’ve put together this Boracay travel guide for 2024.

In it we’ll look at:

  • How to get to Boracay
  • Boracay travel requirements
  • A map of Boracay’s spots
  • Things to do
  • Where to eat
  • Sample Boracay itineraries (including my itinerary when I was there)

Then I’ll finish it off with some quick-fire FAQs about Boracay!

There’s a lot to discuss, so let’s dive right in!

How to Get to Boracay

There is only one entry point into Boracay – the Caticlan Jetty Port. To get there, most tourists take a flight to Caticlan airport, ride a 10-15 minute van or tricycle trip to the port, then jump on a ferry for a 10-20 ride to the island.

Cebu pacific airplane in Caticlan airport

There are flights almost every day from Manila or Cebu to Caticlan.

From Caticlan Airport, you have several options. You can hire a transfer service – which will take care of:

  • The van to the port
  • The ferry to Boracay
  • The van to your hotel

This is probably the most convenient way to get to your hotel, and only costs php800 for local tourists, and php1,000 ($20) for foreign tourists if you book at the airport (If you book through Klook , it costs php640 for locals and 830 for foreigners) .

For budget travelers, you can skip the service and go straight to the tricycle terminal right outside the airport.

Tricycles lining up outside Caticlan airport

When you arrive at the port, you’ll have to present your Boracay tourist QR code (more on this later), then pay several fees including:

  • Environmental fee
  • Terminal fee

Then when you dock in Boracay, there’s another tricycle terminal that can take you to your hotel.

You can save about php200 ($4) per head this way, which certainly adds up if you’re traveling in a big group.

But just a warning! Things can get pretty crowded and disorganized at the Caticlan port. So if you don’t want to be jostling around trying to find the right booths to pay the right fees, the transfer service will be better for you.

Crowded caticlan jetty port

Also, many hotels in Boracay can organize private transportation for you at your request!

Boracay Travel Requirements

As of 2024, you’ll only need:

  • Valid ID or Passport
  • Confirmed booking with a DOT-certified accommodation (full list here )

There are no longer any requirements relating to COVID vaccinations!

You will have to fill up a few forms when you get to the Caticlan Jetty Port. However, these only ask for basic information, and you only need IDs and confirmed bookings to get to the island.

Disclaimer! These are the current requirements. I’m going to do my best to keep this up-to-date, but please check with Aklan’s provincial website for official updates!

Boracay Travel Map

Map showing the tourist spots of boracay

Boracay is quite a small island that’s shaped like a drumstick.

There are four “zones” that you need to know about. Starting from the south, to the north, there is:

  • The “town proper” in the south
  • White beach (with stations 1, 2, and 3) on the east side of the “drumstick bone”
  • The windy east side of the island
  • The hilly northern side of the island (the meat of the drumstick)

Boracay “Town Proper” (Manoc-Manoc)

Boracay signage in Manoc-Manoc Port

The port is found in the southern tip of the island. This is the part that’s closest to a “town proper”. Many locals live here, and there are budget hostels that are great for backpackers.

It isn’t the most beautiful part of Boracay, but it’s interesting nonetheless!

White Beach (Balabag)

boracay island travel requirements

Heading a little north, you’ll get to the main tourist area of Boracay, White Beach.

White Beach is found on the western side of the island, and this 4km stretch of white sand has it ALL.

Aside from the beach, this is also where you’ll find lots of resorts, restaurants, stores, and even D’Mall – an open-air shopping zone for all your needs.

Honestly, if you spend your entire vacation in White Beach, that’s alright – because this is where the real Boracay experience is at.

White Beach is divided into 3 stations – Station 1, 2, and 3.

While there are several overlaps, here’s generally how the 3 stations are divided:

Station 3 is the southernmost station, and it’s where you find most of the budget accommodations and food choices. The floating dock for banana-boat rides, parasailing, speedboating, and other water activities is found in this area as well (you can get here by riding a boat from Station 3 or 1).

Station 2 is right in the middle of White Beach, and is thought of as the mid-range area. D’Mall is found here, as well as most of the popular restaurants, stores, and some resorts as well. There is no dock in station 2, but this is the place to go paddleboarding or kayaking.

Station 1 has a reputation of being the “classy” zone of White Beach. This is where you’ll find some of the more high-end resorts. This is also where you can enjoy the famous Boracay Parawsailing.

Again, there are overlaps. But if you want a quick-and-easy way to divide White Beach, that’s how to think of it!

The Windy East Boracay (Balabag)

Kitesurfing in Bulabog beach

On the other side of the drumstick bone is Bulabog Beach .

Contrary to the chill vibe of White Beach, the East gets REALLY windy.

This makes it the perfect atmosphere for extreme water sports, like kitesurfing!

The Hilly North Boracay (Yapak)

Sunset over Puka Beach in Yapak, Boracay

Once you pass the thin “drumstick bone” (with White Beach on the west, and Bulabog on the east), you’ll get to some hilly, winding, and oftentimes forested roads.

Here you’ll find a mix of local homes and super-high-end resorts, like Shangri-La.

On the Northeast side of Boracay, you’ll find a bunch of secluded resorts, Ilig-Ilagan beach (which can be dubbed as White Beach without the crowds), and Cujo’s keyhole (a nice place for pictures!) .

Finally, on the Northernmost tip of Boracay, you’ll find Puka Beach which, to me, is the best place to watch the sunset and enjoy nature in Boracay.

Where to Stay in Boracay

As a tourist hotspot, you won’t run out of choices when it comes to where to stay!

Budget Places to Stay in Boracay

For budget options , you can always find affordable hotels or hostels around the town, station 3, or in some not-so-well-known areas.

Lots of these rooms (which are good for 2) go for around php1,000 – php2,000 ($20-$40) per night.

If you’re going solo, you can even find some that go for under php1,000 ($20) a night.

Keep in mind though that it’s difficult to find budget accommodations that are along the beachfront – which is kind of a big deal since it’s Boracay we’re talking about.

Mid-Price Places to Stay in Boracay

Entrance of Piccolo hotel in boracay

There are also mid-priced hotels scattered all over the place which go from php2,000 – php5,000 a night ($20 – $100).

Most of the hotels you find along White Beach fall into this category, with the ones closer to the beach often more expensive.

My family and I stayed at Piccolo Hotel during our visit, a 3-star hotel 200m away from the beach and about 100m from D’Mall.

It wasn’t luxurious or anything, but it was everything that we wanted from it (cozy rooms, fast wifi, tv, not too far from the beach, etc.) . We didn’t have any complaints!

High-Price Places to Stay in Boracay

To me, anything above php5,000/night ($100) is expensive.

Maybe I’m a little more stingy, or maybe it’s because I’m used to Philippine prices.

Whatever the case, if you’re looking for something that’s more than just “okay” or “I have no complaints”, then you’ll want a place that goes anywhere from php5,000 – php10,000 ($100 – $200) a night.

Most of the hotels in Station 1 fall in this category. You can also find many of these around Yapak, near Ilig-Ilagan Beach (the northern part of the island).

Luxury Places to Stay in Boracay

If anything above php5,000 ($100) is expensive, then anything above php10,000 ($200) should be considered luxurious.

And boyyy are there luxurious places in Boracay.

We’re talking places like Shangri-La, The Lind, Crimson, all the big names.

Some of these resorts even have private beaches, so you can enjoy the beautiful white Boracay sand with absolutely no crowds around you!

Of course, these places aren’t cheap at all.

But Boracay is easily one of the best luxury destinations. So if you want to max out your trip, why not book one of these luxury hotels?

Boracay Activities (What to do in Boracay!)

Now let’s get to the fun part:

Things to do in Boracay !

It might be small, but Boracay is PACKED with things to do.

Here are some of the very best ones!

Things to Do in Boracay #1: Swim and Chill in White Beach

Waves at white beach boracay

Ahhh yes, of course.

If there’s one thing that Boracay does better than anywhere else, it’s White Beach.

4km of fine white sand that stretches far into the water – Boracay’s White Beach is the gold standard when it comes to beaches.

Not only that, but it’s also an extremely convenient beach.

A lot of breathtaking beaches come with some inconveniences – like having no resorts, restaurants, shops, atms, or anything else nearby.

White Beach has it all.

Now don’t get me wrong.

The beach itself is extremely clean. In fact, you aren’t allowed to eat and drink on the beach itself.

But just behind the line of coconut trees are all the shops and restaurants you will ever need – making it super convenient.

Honestly, the only thing “off” about White Beach is the crowds.

But other than that, this is the ultimate beach destination.

Things to Do in Boracay #2: Eat and Shop in D’Mall

Entrance to D'Mall

A trip to Boracay wouldn’t be complete without checking out D’Mall!

This open-air “mall” is actually a plaza with all kinds of stores.

Here you get all kinds of restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores, souvenir shops, pharmacies, and so many more.

There’s even a place where you can shoot basketballs for prizes.

For the food options, you get everything from Italian to Mexican to Chinese to Filipino to fusion, everything.

There are pizzas, burgers, rice bowls, and everything in between.

So no matter what your preferences, you’ll find something for you in D’Mall.

Just a word of warning!

D’Mall gets pretty crowded.

But then again, that’s to be expected, since this is a tourist hotspot.

Things to Do in Boracay #3: Try the Water Activities in White Beach

Parasailers lifting off the boat

White Beach is really where most of the Boracay action is.

Aside from swimming, chilling, and shopping, you can also try the many different water activities on White Beach.

One of the most popular (and thrilling) things to try is parasailing.

Strap into a parachute, ride a speedboat, and let the wind take you up, up, and away!

Just a warning! This isn’t for the faint of heart!

If you prefer thrills that aren’t as scary, you can go for a banana boat or UFO ride.

Or try jet skiing and paddle boarding.

Still too intense?

Do you just want to chill?

Well, there’s still an activity for you.

It’s called Parawsailing!

This is another activity that’s VERY popular in Boracay.

Hop on a Paraw sailboat, and let them take you out to the sunset.

This is probably the best way to enjoy the gorgeous Boracacy sunset.

You can read more about these activities in my White Beach blog post !

Things to Do in Boracay #4: Hop on an Electric Tricycle for a Land Tour!

People entering an electric tricycle

White Beach is really what makes Boracay Boracay.

But if you want MORE, then a great thing to do is to hop into an electric tricycle and let them take you on a land tour!

You can hail any tricycle on the highway, and they can tour you around for php400/2 hours.

If you’re staying in White Beach, this is probably the best way to visit places like Bulabog Beach (very windy beach on the east side of the island) , Ilig-Ilagan Beach (White Beach but with no crowds!) , Cujo’s Keyhole (nice little rock formation for pictures) , Puka Beach (beautiful beach on the northernmost tip of the island – great for watching the sunset) , and other Boracay tourist spots.

This was probably one of my favorite things to do when I visited. So if you’ve got extra time, don’t miss out!

Things to Do in Boracay #5: Go Island Hopping!

Man riding boat in Boracay

Aside from Boracay, there are a few other cool islands that you can go visit.

These include:

Crocodile Island – An island shaped like a crocodile head. If you wanna go diving or snorkeling, this is the place to do it since there’s plenty of marine life here!

Magic Island – A place to snorkel and cliff dive!

Crystal Cove Island – As the name implies, this island is famous for its beautiful coves – there are 2 on the island. I’ve also heard that snorkeling is great in this place.

Where to Eat in Boracay

While Boracay doesn’t have a special dish that all visitors have to try (although you could make an argument for Chori Burger) , they do have a LOT of restaurants to choose from.

And these restaurants cover just about every cuisine you can think of – Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Filipino, American… You name it, they’ve got it.

Most of the popular ones are found in D’Mall, but you can find delicious food all along the highway.

Some of the places I tried include:

Steam Punk ( Burgers)

Chorizo burger and fries

This is my favorite restaurant in Boracay.

It’s so good, I ate here TWICE during my visit!

Hailed as the “Best Burger on the Island”, these guys serve all kinds of delicious burger creations.

From their standard hamburger, to their pulled pork burgers, to their Chori burgers, even to their footlong sandwiches, it’s ALL good.

When your order is ready, they also have a cool little presentation, where your burger is lowered by a steam machine from the kitchen above. It adds a little excitement.

Steam Punk is found right in the middle of D’Mall.

Island Bowls – Boracay Beach Truck (Rice Bowls)

Man ordering from Island Bowls Boracay

Found on the roadside entrance of D’Mall, this food truck serves some really, really good rice bowls from different Asian cuisines.

You can go for things like Bulgogi, orange chicken, adobo, and more. I got the Chinese Pork with Nasi Goreng rice bowl, and it was suuuuuper good.

They also serve milk teas. So if rice bowls with milk tea is your thing, you’ll love this place.

Also, the food truck is aesthetic. So you can get some nice pics here!

Aria (Italian)

For lovers of Italian food, this is the place to be!

Found right at the beachside entrance of D’Mall, this place gives you a wonderful view of the beach while you enjoy your favorite Italian foods.

They have pretty much everything you would want from an Italian restaurant – pizzas, risottos, pastas, lasagnas – you name it.

Halo Mango (Shaved Ice)

Mango halo halo in HaloMango

Do you ever dream about eating a HUUUUUUUUUGE bowl of halo-halo with your partner?

Welp, that’s exactly what you’ll get in Halo Mango!

Let me tell you, the serving sizes here are LARGE. So don’t be shocked when you order the “couple-size” mango halo-halo, and you get a bowl that’s definitely for more than two people.

And it’s delicious too!

If you’ve never tried halo-halo before, it’s essentially shaved ice, milk, and a bunch of different fruits. In Halo Mango, their specialty is mangoes (duh).

If you’re intimidated by what I’ve said about the sizes, don’t worry. They do have a display of their serving sizes in their window, so you can choose accordingly ( we just didn’t pay attention, that’s why we were shocked! ).

Aside from halo-halo, Halo Mango also serves soft-serve ice creams – perfect for beating the heat!

Merly’s BBQ (Chori Burger)

Cooking chorizo over a grill

Whenever I visit a place, I always try to find something that’s truly local.

For Boracay, the closest thing you’ll get is Chori Burger – which is short for Chorizo Burger.

While you can get a “sosyal” version of this in Steam Punk, the “original” Chori Burger comes from a small stall on the border of Station 1 and Station 2.

It’s… well… a bit underwhelming.

All it is is a burger bun with chorizo and some ketchup.

But hey, gotta try the local food right?

Sample Boracay Itineraries (+ What I Did!)

One thing that I love about Boracay is that since the island is so small, you can easily piece together your dream vacation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling Boracay

Now that you know everything you need to know about traveling to Boracay, let’s answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Boracay!

When is the Best Time to Visit Boracay?

The DRY season! The Boracay dry season runs from November to April – making those the best months to visit Boracay. Because what better time to visit an island paradise than when the skies are clear and the sun is out?

Now, I should warn you about 2 things:

#1 Boracay is PACKED during this season.

Crowds in D'mall at night

So expect crowds of people on White Beach. I visited during this season, and whaddya know, it was full of people wherever I went (except Ilig-Ilagan Beach *wink) .

And #2, Boracay’s seasons aren’t very pronounced.

Yes, there’s a much better chance of catching the sunshine if you visit during the dry season. But Boracay doesn’t follow a strict winter-spring-summer-fall pattern.

Instead, it has 2 seasons. Relatively dry from November-April, and relatively rainy the rest of the year.

So if you’re willing to take your chances, you can avoid the crowds by coming during the rainy season (and you might score some discounts!) .

Just don’t complain if bad weather destroys your plans!

Which Airlines Fly to Boracay Island?

Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and Air Asia all have daily flights to Caticlan from either Cebu or Manila. Other airlines, such as Sunlight Air also have trips from Manila.

Meanwhile, if you’re already at El Nido, you can take a direct flight to Boracay with Air Swift.

Keep in mind though that these flights are not regular, so you’ll have to check their website for their schedules!

How Much does it Cost to Fly to Boracay Island?

f you book within a month of your trip, a direct flight from Manila or Cebu can cost anywhere from php2,000 ($40) to php5,000 ($100) base fare.

That’s why it’s always good to book early!

If you book months ahead, you can enjoy base fares below php1,000 ($20).

If you’re lucky, you might even hit a promo! Cebu Pacific, Air Asia, and Philippine Airlines do quite a lot of promos for flying to Boracay, and you might just get your ticket for a base fare of just 1 peso!

Why is Boracay the Best Tourist Spot?

Beautiful white sand, amenities everywhere you look, luxury resorts – what’s not to love about Boracay?

In my opinion, Boracay is one of the EASIEST places to travel to – not just in the Philippines, but in the WORLD.

Combine that with its natural beauty, you get a tourist spot that is truly world-class.

What are Boracay’s Stations?

Boracay’s stations are a simple way to divide the 4km stretch of white sand on White Beach.

While there are overlaps, Station 3 is thought of as the budget zone, Station 2 is the mid-range area with most of the shopping options, and Station 1 is considered the high-class zone.

While it’s not on the map, some people even include a Station 0. This is where the classiest of the classy resorts are found. The types for people on a luxury escape!

Why Did Boracay Close?

In February 2018, President Duterte closed Boracay to tourism to make way for the island’s rehabilitation.

Before that, Boracay was getting WAYYY too many tourists – more than it could possibly handle. This led to the island getting dirty.

With trash everywhere and sewage on the waters, Boracay was no longer the island paradise it used to be.

boracay island travel requirements

Boracay reopened in October 2018, with stricter rules. This is the reason you aren’t allowed to have picnics on the beach nowadays (or even make sandcastles!) .

How Many Days Should I Stay in Boracay?

3 days and 2 nights should be enough to get enjoy what Boracay has to offer.

Of course, if you wanna stay forever, why not?

Kidding aside, I personally think that staying more than a week is already too much.

Boracay is a place to escape reality.

But if you stay too long, you’ll probably find that Boracay doesn’t have much in the way of diversity – it is, after all, a small island.

If you have lots of time, you could jump on the ferry back to mainland Panay and explore that island. With FOUR provinces on that island, you can stay for months (and feel like you haven’t seen everything!) .

But hey!

That might just be me.

If you absolutely LOVE beaches, why not stay for 2 weeks? A month?

Heck, why not a whole year?

Which is Better, Boracay or Palawan?

Boracay is better than Palawan for casual tourists and beach lovers. However, Palawan is much more diverse than Boracay, and is better for adventurous people who want to enjoy raw nature.

Kayangan lake in Coron, Palawan

Don’t get me wrong.

Palawan is also EXTREMELY tourist-friendly. Especially the big 3 areas (Puerto Princessa, El Nido, and Coron).

But I feel that you’ll have to be a little bit adventurous to make the most out of your trip to Palawan. Whereas in Boracay, you can stay in your hotel all day and still enjoy the full experience.

So it really depends on what type of trip YOU are looking for!

Ready to Travel Boracay?

Boracay Island: All You Need To Know

boracay island travel requirements

Boracay Island is a major tourist destination in the Philippines, and for good reasons. It is full of natural beauty, inspiring beaches, and a vibrant nightlife. Although it may be small, spanning just 10.32 square kilometers, the island offers a wide range of attractions that draw visitors from far and wide. And today, we’ll tell you all about it.

In this post, we’ll share:

  • What to do in Boracay Island
  • How to reach Boracay Island
  • The best month to visit Boracay Island
  • Boracay travel requirements in 2023

Ready? Let’s get started.

What to Do in Boracay Island

There are countless activities you can enjoy on this dream island. Yet, in this section, we’ll provide you with a quick overview of them.

Some of the most popular activities in Boracay include:

  • Enjoying the beaches
  • Scuba diving and observing fantastic marine life
  • Cliff-jumping at Ariel’s point cliff
  • Hop around the surrounding islands (we recommend booking a tour)
  • Getting beachside professional massages
  • Engaging in water sports like kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing, parasailing, and flyboarding
  • Mount Luho Viewpoint (the highest peak in Boracay; you can hike or ride a motorbike to the summit)

Let’s take a closer look at all the beaches you can visit in Boracay, what you can do on each of them, and the current beach rules.

Beaches in Boracay Island

Boracay is known for its awe-inspiring beaches. White Beach is the most popular destination given its prime location in the center of the island and outstanding beauty.

White Beach is divided into three sections:

  • Station 1: Here you’ll find most resorts and hotels
  • Station 2: Here you’ll find restaurants, coffee shops, clubs, and shops.
  • Station 3: You’ll find lots of greenery here.

However, it’s worth noting that White Beach tends to be the most crowded due to its popularity. Fortunately, there are several other nearby white sand beaches that offer a more serene and relaxed atmosphere, making them great alternatives for those seeking a less crowded beach experience.

Besides the White Beach, some of Boracay’s beaches include:

  • Puka Shell Beach : the second most visited beach after White Beach
  • Balinghai Beach : small private beach owned by Balinghai Resort. Non-guests can access the beach by paying an entrance fee that includes consumable food from the restaurant.
  • Bulabog Beach : great for beach sports like windsurfing, parasailing, and kiteboarding.
  • Cagban Beach : This beach is the main port of the island, but you can find quiet spots to relax.
  • Crocodile Beach : located in the southeast part of Boracay, this beach is full of marine life and a great spot for underwater activities like snorkeling.
  • Diniwid Beach: located close to White Beach’s station 1, this beach has amazing cliffside views.
  • Iligan-Iligan Beach : This spot has the same white sand feature as White Beach, and it has some picturesque limestone islets that can be explored. Besides, it’s an amazing place for snorkeling.
  • Manoc-Manoc Beach : Here you’ll find a lot of locals; however, it might not be as picturesque as other beaches.
  • Tambisaan Beach : Near the shore, you can find coral gardens and reefs. So, this is an ideal spot for snorkeling!
  • Tulubhan Beach : Scattered along the beach, you’ll find local villages whose inhabitants rely on the sea to gather seafood. It is a good destination for a tranquil getaway.

Boracay’s Beach Rules

In order to maintain the cleanliness of its beaches, Boracay has implemented certain regulations, which include:

  • Eating and drinking on the beach isn’t allowed
  • Pets are banned
  • Single-use plastics on the beach are prohibited
  • You can’t build sandcastles or sand structures on the beach without prior approval from the appropriate authorities.

The Best Month to Visit Boracay Island

The best months to visit Boracay Island are from November to May, during the dry season. This is also the peak season in the Philippines, so you’ll find a lot of visitors.

During these months, you can enjoy a wide range of activities. The White Beach remains calm, providing a good opportunity for swimming, lounging, and enjoying the beach. On the other side of the island, you’ll find strong winds that create favorable conditions for windsurfing and surfing.

It’s worth mentioning that you can still enjoy Boracay during the rainy season (from June to October). You’ll find lower prices and fewer crowds. Most days will be sunny; however, there are chances of typhoons.

How to Reach Boracay Island

As you may already know, the Philippines is an archipelago of 7,641 islands. So, you’ll hardly find roads or trains that connect them. The only way to reach Boracay Island is by plane.

There are two airports close to the island:

  • Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (also known as Caticlan Airport)
  • Kalibo International Airport

Reaching Boracay from Godofredo P. Ramos Airport

The closest airport to Boracay Island is Caticlan Airport, which is located just 7 kilometers away. After landing, you’ll need to reach Caticlan Jetty Port, which is just a 10-minute walk from the airport. From there, you can board a boat to Boracay, which typically costs around 4 USD. You’ll reach Boracay in 15 minutes.

Moreover, as Caticlan Airport is small, there may not be many flights landing here, and airfares may be higher than at Kalibo International Airport.

Reaching Boracay from Kalibo International Airport

Flying to Kalibo International Airport is generally cheaper. In fact, most promo fares are applied to flights landing here. However, it is worth noting that this airport is the farthest from Boracay Island, approximately 60 kilometers away. Upon arrival, you’ll need to embark on a bus or van ride that typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Caticlan Jerry Port. From there, you can take a 15min. boat ride to reach beautiful Boracay.

Travel Requirements for Boracay 2023

2024 BORACAY TRAVEL GUIDE (ITINERARY + BUDGET)

Detailed Boracay travel guide with DIY Boracay itinerary with budget including places to see in Boracay.

The sun-drenched Boracay has brazenly succumbed to tourism. It placed the Philippines on the tourists’ radar because of its impeccable palm-fringed, powdery, white shore cuddled by turquoise, warm sea.  But there’s more to Boracay than its world-famous White Beach, the island is also packed water sports activities, beach parties, good food and fruit shakes, and friendly locals to boot.

BORACAY PRE-TRAVEL GUIDE

About boracay.

The influx of tourists in Boracay started sometime in 1970’s, when the it was used as filming locations of the US movies Nam’s Angels and Too Late Hero.  After that, in 1978, German Writer Jens Peter mentioned Boracay as paradise on Earth in his book about the Philippines. Since then, foreign backpackers started to travel to Boracay and it quickly became a budget beach destination. Back in the days, Boracay is just one of the unfamiliar places in the province of Aklan, in the Philippines inhabited by the Ati and Tumandok, the indigenous people of Panay Island who thrive on coconut farming, fishing, and goat raising.

Sadly, as Boracay quickly became one of the world’s best beach destination and developed as a prime tourist destination, the Ati and Tumandok people, the original inhabitants of the island, were displaced on a mere 2.1 hectare walled community. Dexter Condez, the spokesperson of the Boracay Ati Tribal Organization (BATO) was gunned down, and the suspect is a security guard of a popular hotel chain. BATO, accused the management of the hotel and 2 other nearby resorts as allegedly interested in the lot occupied by the Ati people. The hotel strongly denied any involvement in the murder.

It is unfortunate that despite being the original residents of Boracay, the Ati and Tumandok people seem to have lost their rights and place in the island. Over the years, only a few of them work in hotels and restaurants around Boracay, when they should be the first ones benefitting from the influx of tourists there. I have visited other ASEAN countries, and I’ve seen how proud they are of their culture. They found a way to somehow preserve, integrate, and showcase their local culture and the way of life of the indigenous people to help educate visitors. Hopefully, in the near future, tourism in Boracay can create better economic opportunities for the Ati and Tumandok, after all, the island is originally their ancestral territory.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BORACAY?

BORACAY ITINERARY: OFF-PEAK SEASON IN BORACAY

Boracay is a tropical beach destination, its peak season is around late March to May, the summer months in the Philippines. But take note that since it is the peak season, expect the prices of flights and hotels to skyrocket. Also, there are lots of tourists during the summer.  If you want to travel with less tourist, best time to visit Boracay is around January to early March, before the peak season.  August to November is low season, due to the rainy season and typhoons in the Philippines, but prices can be pretty low during this season, so if you want to save on flights and hotels, you can try visiting Boracay at your own risk during this season. Best to check the weather updates before your trip though.

BORACAY WI-FI

While most accommodations, cafes, and restaurants in Boracay offer free internet, having your own pocket Wi-Fi is still recommended. You can connect securely online when you have your own Wi-Fi and you can stay connected online even outside the confines of your resort or hotel.

PHILIPPINES POCKET WI-FI: RENT HERE

Boracay atm.

There are a handful of ATMs in Boracay (BDO, BPI, and Metrobank) and money exchange centers. Best to stack up on cash when in the island because almost everything is on a cash basis. Some establishments and hotels accept major credit cards.

BORACAY DRONE

Is drone allowed in Boracay? NO.  I was told they no longer allow flying drone for personal use.  As for business use, you need to secure a permit at the Municipal Mayor’s Office, fees may apply.

BORACAY SAFETY:

Is it safe to travel to Boracay? Yes, of course. Boracay is a tourist-friendly place and has been receiving tourists from around the world since time immemorial.  Locals here are easy going and pretty friendly.  But you have to understand that lately, due to the pandemic, which led to unemployment and closure of many businesses around the island, many locals are desperate to earn a living, so, please forgive some touts if they can be quite persistent to sell you tours or souvenirs. Thing is, Boracay is heavily dependent on tourism, that’s why the suffered a major blow when Covid-19 struck the world in 2020, because of the travel restrictions imposed by many countries. But overall, Boracay is still a great and safe destination to visit and enjoy, if you are looking to travel soon. It is also safe for solo female travelers, but I’d still recommend visiting in groups since it’s a beach destination that you’d cherish more if you are with your loved one, family, friends, or colleagues.

Where to stay in boracay.

During my multiple visits in Boracay, I stayed at different hotels in different areas. One is located in Station 3, another in Diniwid Beach, and there’s also one in Station 2.  The most convenient  is the one at Station 2 of course, but I also liked my stay at Diniwid Beach it is quiet and the sunset was really great. Meanwhile, what I like about my hotel at Station 3 is, it’s inexpensive.  But my personal favorite is the one hidden in Bulabog Beach – Ferra Hotel and Garden Suites because it is spotless and has excellent customer service.  You can read my full review through the blog link below.

Boracay is well-known for its delicious fruit shake, and Jony’s Fruitshake is the original in the island, founded in 1982.  I was lucky enough to meet the amiable owner of Jony’s Fruitshake – Mr. Dionisio “Jony” Salme, who also owns Maya’s Restaurant, Pig Out Bistro, Jony’s Resort, and Jony’s Boutique Hotel. Jony’s Fruitshake is also served at Maya’s Restaurant and Pig Out Bistro.

Boracay itinerary: Jony's Fruitshake

Mang Jony is the long-time President of Boracay Business Foundation Incorporated (BFI), an organization of business owners in Boracay. He told me how he arrived in Boracay, back in March 2, 1972, when there was no electricity yet in the island. Back then, Boracay is still virtually empty, occupied mostly by Ati and Tumandok indigenous people, and a few foreign backpackers who visit the island occasionally. Mang Jony, who is originally from Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, worked for the Elizalde Group of Companies. But due to the land grabbing issues during the Marcos era, he was assigned to Boracay by his boss to manage the properties of Elizalde Family like the age-old D’Mall and a local radio station. Since there was no electricity yet, they use a generator. Jony’s Fruitshake started when an Austrian Dutch Backpacker who visited Boracay had a blender with him and sold him the blender when he went back to his country.  Apparently, the young guy got tired because there was no place to charge his blender.  Since they have a generator, Mang Jony eventually bought it, but said it was pretty expensive to maintain it since they had to travel all the way to Kalibo, which takes a whole day, just to buy gasoline for the generator to run the blender, to buy ice, and to buy fruits. Fortunately, a co-worker gifted him a refrigerator powered by kerosene where he made ice.  Soon enough, foreign tourists started lining up for his fruit shakes. He then added Mexican food to his menu, like tacos and burritos, since that’s what the foreigners like back then. He set up umbrellas and tables along White Beach, and the rest is history.  Today, you can get Jony’s Fruitshake beside Maya’s Restaurant and at Pig Out Bistro.

6.Boracay Food Trip

Boracay may not be the best place in the Philippines to go on a food trip, but it sure has a handful of relaxed restaurants and cozy cafés that serve both unfussy and creative dishes. Also, take note that because of Covid-19, many restaurants, cafes, and bars have closed. Here’s some of my personal favorites:

boracay travel guide: Pig Out Bistro

  Pig Out Bistro

If you are wondering what Boracay looked like before the arrival of tourists, a huge mural painting inspired by one of the remaining old photos of Boracay taken by Dieter Schrottmann can be seen on the wall of the Pig Out Bistro in Boracay. But aside from the painting, what draws tourists to this tiny café is its ingenious food. Take for example the fresh oysters from Aklan, like the Oyster Mignonette, which, as its name suggests is garnished with mignonette sauce to balance out the brininess of the oyster. My favorite is the Green Oyster relished with herbed compound butter. And there’s also Oyster and Pearl, savored with egg roe, cucumber, and dill. If you’re in a group, try the seafood platter composed of grilled prawns, octopus, and gindara , oyster mignonette, baked oyster, steamed clams, and garlic steamed clams.

Maya’s Restaurant

This good old restaurant has been in Boracay since 1982, it was founded by Mang Dionisio “Jony” the same year as Jony’s Fruitshake. Maya is derived from the local name of a bird and the name of the indigenous people of Mexico – the Mayans, because the resto serves both Filipino and Mexican cuisines.

boracay food trip

The palm-fringed Maya Restaurant is a beach-front diner located in White Beach Station 1 in Boracay, in front of Jony’s Hotel and beside Jony’s Fruitshake. It exudes an airy, tropical atmosphere and the interior is decked with modern-designed rattan chairs where you can sit snugly while sipping your favorite Jony’s Fruitshake.

The dishes here are also created by Chef Jun Salme of the Pig Out Bistro. The Mexican flavors include: Tacos Al Pastor , comprised of homemade fresh corn tortilla, slow-cooked pork, avocado, beans, onions, and cilantro rice. The Carnitas Burrito was inspired by the shared recipe of a former Mexican Ambassador to the Philippines.  Meanwhile, some of my favorite Filipino cuisines at Maya’s Restaurant are the Kansi – softened beef bone marrow stewed in lemon grass, ginger, and batwan , and of course, the Lechon Kawali – the popular pork belly served in small kawali , which is oven-steamed to preserve the crunchiness of the skin and the juiciness of the fat.

The sunset of Boracay is legendary.  It is a big attraction on the island, while enjoying your fruit shake or beer at a beach-front café or a nearby swanky restaurant.

BORACAY TRAVEL GUIDE: PARAW SAILING

But if you want an extraordinary sunset watching experience, try the Boracay Paraw Sailing tours during sunset.  In the Philippines, “paraw” is a term for small boat with two katig (outrigger) that is propelled by sail. And there’s a plethora of paraw boats on the beach of Boracay used for sunset watching activity.  Paraw can accommodate up to 8-10 persons. 8.boracay pub crawl.

Boracay is well-known for its night life.  Back in the days, during my first time in the island we met some friendly fire dancers who took us to local bars in the island where locals party like there’s no tomorrow. Nowadays, if you’re into party scenes, best to join the Boracay Pub Crawl where an experienced local guide will take you different popular bars in Boracay and get free shots and special drinks at every stop while still enjoying different activities.

For a beach destination, Boracay is surprisingly a shopping haven, oozing with boutiques, souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes, and bistros. Its compact downtown area is perfect for shopping, strolling, and people-watching at an outdoor cafe. There are also souvenir stores in Puka Beach selling all kinds of beach outfits and Boracay souvenirs made of local materials.

  10. Boracay Side Trip

While in Boracay, you can actually make day trips to neighboring tourist destinations.

Cliff Diving at Ariel’s Point

This popular tourist destination in Buruanga, Aklan is hugged by emerald and turquoise water and swimming holes hemmed in by rock formations. It’s often crowded with tourists, mostly foreigners, who want to try cliff diving from its 5 different diving boards starting at 3 meters to 15 meters high. If you’re not into cliff diving, Ariel’s Point Day Tour Package includes: paddle boarding, snorkeling, kayaking along Buruanga coast, and sunbathing with a scenic view of the Sulu Sea. A day trip here already includes a buffet lunch (traditional dishes), merienda (afternoon snack), and unlimited drinks (beers, rum, soda, mixed drinks, and water). If you book Ariel’s Point Day Tour Package below, it already includes a boat transfer to and from Boracay. Pick up from Boracay is around 11:15 AM, and return to Boracay is around 5:00 PM, so you have the whole day to spend at Ariel’s Point. You can book at least a day in advance through the link below to secure a slot since this is a popular destination.

Carabao island.

If there’s one day trip from Boracay that I would recommend, it’s Carabao Island. I’ve spent a few days in this tiny quiet island, far from the trappings of commercialization, and I loved it. But if you don’t have much time to spend, you can book a day tour to Carabao Island.

And if you have the luxury of time after your Boracay trip, you can also visit other equally charming neighboring provinces.

Gigantes Island

If you still can’t get enough of the beach and islands, head to Gigantes Island, a group of islands off the coast of Carles in Northern Iloilo. Gigantes Island is speckled with islands and islets covered by dramatic rock formations, rough-hewn coves, and emerald lagoons. Boracay Sunset Cruise

Getting to Boracay

Boracay is accessible from the major cities of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Prepare a printed voucher from your pre-booked accredited Boracay resorts and hotels. You will be denied entry to the island without a resort or hotel voucher. It is part of the new rules implemented by the local government and tourism office since Boracay reopened to the public in 2018.

Option 1: Flight Manila to Boracay

When it comes to the best way to get from Manila to Boracay, the fastest and most convenient mode of transportation is by plane. A flight from Manila to Boracay is the fastest way to travel.

There are no direct flights from Manila to Boracay, so you must choose between Kalibo and Caticlan. I find landing in Caticlan the best option as it is convenient for travelers and is only 30 minutes away from Boracay.

Suppose you’re traveling from Manila, the Philippines’ capital and largest city, on the island of Luzon. In that case, you must take a 1-hour domestic flight from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Caticlan. The flight cost from Manila to Boracay ranges from P1,000 to P4,500, depending on the season and the current promo. Cheap flights to Boracay from Manila can be found by searching for Manila to Boracay flights promo 2022.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for the most affordable option, catch a flight to Kalibo since its fare starts at P1,250. However, you still need to catch a 1.5-hour bus or van ride to Caticlan, which also incurs transportation costs. No matter where you land, you must get to the Caticlan Jetty Port and catch a local boat to Boracay Island.

Option 2: Clark – Boracay Flight

In addition, if you’re coming from the Northern part of Luzon or want to avoid the traffic in Manila, flying from Clark to Boracay via Caticlan is a viable option. Airfares from Clark are typically less expensive than those from Manila.

Option 3: Cebu – Boracay Flight

If you’re traveling from the Visayas, Cebu City’s Mactan International Airport offers direct flights to Caticlan. If you’re coming from Mindanao, Caticlan can easily reach you from Davao Francisco Bangoy International Airport.

When you finally reach the Caticlan Airport, you must take a 10-15 minute tricycle ride to Caticlan Jetty Port. Tickets are available at the port. The ferry ticket from Caticlan to Boracay Island costs P30, plus a port fee of P100 and an environmental fee of P80. The boat ride takes 10-20 minutes.

Option 4: Manila – Boracay Ferry

Most locals take the cheaper ferry to Boracay. This may be an option if you don’t mind traveling for several hours or days. Again. Boracay’s main port is Caticlan Jetty Port. Here are some of the best ways to get to this port.

Batangas Pier

From Manila or Southern Luzon, take the 2Go Travel ferry to Boracay. But before that, you must go to Batangas first. From Manila’s Cubao or Pasay bus terminals, take a 2-hour land bus to Batangas Pier. It takes 9 hours to get from Batangas to Caticlan. Your 2Go Travel fare, however, is determined by your lodging choice.

By Direct RoRo Vessel

You can ride the Roll On, Roll Off for a more scenic but significantly longer journey to Boracay (RoRo). Designed to transport wheeled vehicles, RoRo ships are vessels of this type.

You can use your own or a hired car to take the RoRo route. If you’re traveling with a large group or your family and don’t mind the long hours of travel, this may be an excellent choice. The bus route is the same, except that you’ll drive to the Batangas Pier and book your RoRo tickets when you arrive.

Additionally, because you cannot bring your car on a boat to Boracay Island, you must park it at the Caticlan Jetty Port for a nightly fee. The cost of this depends on the size of your car. Passenger fees and terminal fees must also be paid during vessel transfers.

Airport Transfers

For a hassle-free travel experience, visitors can also book an airport transfer service. Several companies offer private transfers from Caticlan and Kalibo airports to Boracay Island. This is a convenient option for those who prefer not to deal with the hassle of public transportation.

Travel Tips

Boracay Island is a popular tourist destination in the Philippines, and there are several things to keep in mind when planning a trip. Here are some travel tips to help make the most out of your Boracay itinerary.

Peak Season and Dry Season

Boracay Island’s peak season is from November to May, with the dry season from December to April. The island is bustling with tourists during this time, and accommodation and tour packages may be more expensive. It is recommended to book accommodations and tours in advance during this season.

Best time to visit Boracay

January to April – The dry season in Boracay. It is the perfect season to avoid being stranded on the island.

May to October – Considered the rainy season in the Philippines. This is also an off-peak season, and you can expect hotel and airline rates to be much lower.

November to December – It’s the perfect period to visit the island since it’s not usually crowded during these months.

Boracay Boat Fare, Environmental Fee, Terminal Fees, etc.

  • Environmental Fee — PHP150 (USD3) per person (free for kids 5 years old and below) and PHP150 for foreign guests.
  • Caticlan Jetty Port terminal fee — PHP150 (USD2.00) per person (free for kids 12 years old and below) and PHP300 for foreign guests.
  • Boat Fare from Caticlan to Boracay — PHP50 (USD1) per person from 6:00 AM to 05:45 PM, and PHP80 per person from 05:45 PM onwards (half fare for kids 6 years old and below)

Banks, ATMs, and currency exchange

A common problem that locals and tourists frequently encounter is the availability of ATMs on the island. There are more than a dozen of them, and refills are only done once a day, so if a particular machine runs out of cash, you can forget about using it until the next day. ATM Machines are available in the White Beach area, D’Mall Area, Budget Mart, and others along the main road. During the busier holiday seasons, the situation can be pretty bad, with people racing to get to the ATM first to withdraw enough money for the day.

Credit Cards are a great alternative to avoid the common hassle with ATMs, and there’s also the option of just arriving with enough cash on you. If you’re doing that, check if the establishment accepts credit cards, particularly in restaurants and bars.

If you want to bring your own local money and exchange it on the spot, that’s also possible, but keep in mind that the exchange rate varies quite a lot from one place to another, so you might want to walk a little longer and check out all places before handing in your money. As with most tourist locations, the closer you get to the Centre, the worse the rates get, so head the opposite way if you want to get the most for your money.

Tourist Spots

Boracay Island has several tourist spots, including White Beach, Puka Beach, and Ariel’s Point. Planning an itinerary is recommended to make the most of your trip. There are several tour packages available that cover these spots and more.

Some establishments on the island offer discounts for students, senior citizens, and military personnel. It is recommended to bring valid IDs to take advantage of these discounts.

Unique Experiences

Boracay Island is a popular tourist destination for its picturesque beaches and crystal-clear blue waters. While swimming and sunbathing are the most common activities, there are also unique experiences that visitors can enjoy on the island. Here are some of the most exciting things to do in Boracay:

Mermaid Swimming

One of the most unique experiences that visitors can have in Boracay is mermaid swimming. The Philippine Mermaid Swimming Academy offers classes where participants can learn how to swim like a mermaid. The classes are led by experienced instructors who will teach participants how to put on a mermaid tail and swim gracefully in the water. This is a great activity for those who want to try something new and have fun at the same time.

Boracay Sunset

Sunset Viewing

Boracay is also known for its stunning sunsets, and there are many places on the island where visitors can enjoy the view. One of the best places to watch the sunset is Willy’s Rock, a famous landmark on the island. Another great spot is Puka Beach, which is less crowded and offers a more serene setting. Visitors can also take a sunset cruise and enjoy the view from the water.

Join a Pub Crawl

For those who want to experience Boracay’s nightlife, joining a pub crawl is a must. The pub crawl takes participants to some of the best bars and clubs on the island, where they can enjoy drinks and music with other travelers. This is a great way to meet new people and experience the island’s lively nightlife.
