Live reviews

Formed in April 2009 after most of their current members left their careers in indie music to pursue a life of rock & roll, Monster Truck capture the true spirit of a rebellious genre that has disappeared from the mainstream in recent years. Two things separate Monster Truck from your usual four man band. 1) Member Brandon Bliss plays the organ, which works very well with the bass and is a kick-ass instrument and 2) All members of Monster Truck sing collectively, even drummer Steve Kiely. The group are probably most known for being a Juno Award winner and for their album 'Furiousity', which hit number 13 in the Canadian charts in 2013.

Playing at a studio called 'Sugar Beach' courtesy of 102.1 The Edge, Monster Truck played a couple of tracks for dedicated listeners, and they definitely didn't hold back. The song 'Sweet Mountain River' has an incredibly catchy riff that is played by organ, guitar and bass and gives the song a very full effect. Despite lead singer Jon Harvey appearance which reminds me of a shy science teacher, he totally wrecks the room with deep, roaring tone and his immense finger movement up and down the neck of the bass. Another tune they played was 'Old Train', another predictably lively number, where Jon and guitarist Jeremy Widerman got to show off with their solo skills on their respective instruments. I felt like Monster Truck did well and truly define old school rock and roll with just a few songs and I can't wait to hear more of their material.

Monster Truck had a 30 minute set as support to Black Stone Cherry last night. They were awesome starting with True Rocker from their new album and proceeded to play 3 other tracks from said album. Of course there was the MT classics like Don't Tell Me How To Live/Sweet Mountain River and others. Overall a superb show from a band who deserve a hell of a lot more attention than they get. My one problem it was to short you really need to see these guys in their own headline show. Keep up the great work serious stardom is coming for this band.

There guys are the real deal. 5th time seeing them and it's been a long time, if ever, have I seen fans so enthusiastic. I love the bands sound and hope they make it . I promote them wherever I go and am surprised at how many ( young and old) havent heard of them yet . New songs last night were eagerly embraced it was such a party last night. Only downfall, ocasionally the young kids got carried away in the mosh pit...but maybe that's me feeling a little old. Love the Truck! !

Love these guys. It was my 7th time seeing them . This time around i felt they didn't quite have their A game. My girlfriend had seen them 3 times and felt the same way and were wondering if they were getting a little road weary.

Anyway. ..still love em . I have a friend in Montreal who I've introduced them to and he's going to the show on March 1st. I'm likely going with a few friends again on April 5th in Oshawa

Still love em and " don't stop having fun guys".

This was my third time seeing Monster Truck live. Last couple of times they were the support act so it was good to see them headlining.

The venue was quite small but it didn't stop everyone having a great time. The guys have a fab stage presence and really got the audience involved in singing along with them. Wouldn't hesitate to go and see them again!

Monster Truck announce autumn 2022 UK tour with Those Damn Crows

Taking place in September and October 2022

Canadian rock juggernauts Monster Truck have lined up a headline UK tour for September and October 2022 with very special guests Those Damn Crows .

The tour announcement comes a few days before Monster Truck rock the Main Stage at Download Festival 2022 before headliners Iron Maiden.

Monster Truck will kick off their trek with Those Damn Crows at Dover Booking Hall on Thursday 29th September and they call in Wolverhampton, Oxford, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Cambridge, London, Brighton, Cardiff and Sheffield before culminating at Nottingham Rock City on Monday 17th October.

Following the trek, Monster Truck will headline the closing night at Planet Rockstock on Sunday 4th December.

Bassist and lead singer Jon Harvey enthuses: “HOLY S--- IS IT EVER GREAT TO ANNOUNCE A TOUR IN THE UK!

“Beyond excited to rip around with our incredible support THOSE DAMN CROWS and party hard in all these amazing cities. Expect a dirty, intense, rock n roll fury machine when this mammoth tour rolls into your town....”

Tickets go on sale from Planet Rock Tickets at 10am on Friday 10th June. Very limited Planet Rockstock tickets are also on sale RIGHT HERE .

Alongside announcing a new UK tour, Monster Truck have just unleashed a stomping rock n’ roll banger called ‘Golden Woman’ and it accompanying music video.

'Golden Woman' is the first taster of Monster Truck’s highly anticipated fourth studio album and follows the band's recent global signing with BMG.

“The idea for ‘Golden Woman’ came one afternoon as I was fiddling around on a kid’s guitar my father had bought my son. He got it at some garage sale and thought it perfect for little hands. I ended up picking it up, putting the strap over my head, and walking around with it all afternoon playing the main riff, and slowly crafting an arrangement. Jer and I then fine-tuned the song, and voila! Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere,” says Jon Harvey.

“The lyrics were born of my own personal experience with my partner, Simara. She saved me during a very rough time, and I am forever grateful for her, and the mystical revelations that only love can bring. Her hair colour is naturally blonde, so the title of the song is, like all Monster Truck songs, very literal.”

The wildest guitars in rock music:, zz top’s spinning fur guitars.

Of course, we couldn't make a feature about outrageous guitars without ZZ Top's iconic Spinning Fur Guitars. Made from real sheepskin, the twirling guitar for Billy Gibbons and bass for the late-great Dusty Hill were both created by Dean Zelinsky of Dean Guitars and they famously first appeared in the music video to 'Legs' in 1983. Billy Gibbons says: "The guitars are attached to our belt buckles. It's a rotary electrical contact and strap mount. A hole is bored in the back of the guitar at the balancing point and the device is mounted there. Oh yeah, you gotta look out for that thing coming back around. Get your head and neck out of the way or else it'll say hello in an unfashionable fashion."

Bill Bailey’s Gary Hutchins Six-Neck Guitar

Comedy legend, esteemed musician and Strictly Come Dancing champion, Bill Bailey, played this six-necked guitar aptly called The Beast as part of his stand-up routine in 2011. An apparent nod to Rick Nielsen's Five Neck, the instrument was created by guitar maker Gary Hutchins, the eponymous founder of Hutchins guitars, and it once went on display at London's Albert and Victoria Museum.

Nigel Tufnel’s Marshall Stack Guitar

It's fitting that legendary Spinal Tap axeman and amp aficionado Nigel Tufnel used to play a glorious Marshall stack guitar. One of only two ever made, the guitar has a Jackson neck and Seymour Duncan pickup, with the bottom stack detachable for quieter studio work. Naturally, all the volume and tone knobs go up to 11. Commenting on why the guitar was his mainstay for many European shows, Tufnel said: "Well, it's got a very Scandinavian look about it, doesn't it?"

Michael Angelo Batio’s Double-Guitar

Famous for his technical prowess and genre-straddling playing style, American heavy metal guitarist Michael Angelo Batio personally invented the Double Guitar - a V-shaped, twin-neck guitar that Batio plays both left and right-handed.

Rick Nielsen’s Five Neck

Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen with his iconic Five Neck guitar at a concert in 2012. Tired of performing with multiple guitars at concerts, Nielsen joined forces with guitar makers Hamer way back in 1981 to combine all of his guitar playing needs into one glorious instrument. The guitar was created by fusing the bodies of five Hamer Specials together and there have been several incarnations of the Five Neck. Hamer founder Frank Untermeyer said: "Rick's out of his mind, but in a wonderful way."

Steve Vai's Hydra guitar

Taking its name from the track 'Teeth of the Hydra', Steve Vai's new Hydra guitar was built in conjunction with the designers at Hoshino and is based on a "steampunk motif" idea of Vai's. Unveiled in December 2021, the Hydra is billed as a one-bodied, two-headstock-ed, three-neck-ed creature that encompasses, among other things: seven- and 12-string guitars; a four-string bass; sympathetic harp strings; half-fretless necks; single-coil, humbucking, piezo and sustainer pickups; floating and hardtail tremolo bridges; phase splitters; and much more. "It's an incredibly-built machine," Vai comments.

Bo Diddley’s Square Guitar

The blues rock legend made his first square guitar aged 17 as he couldn't afford to buy an electric guitar. He explained to Vintage Guitar in 1997: "(the guitar's) pickup was the part of a Victrola record player where the needle went in. I clamped it to the metal tailpiece to pick up the vibrations." The original guitar was sadly stolen, but in 1958 Gretsch later made a version with DeArmond pickups. Pictured is Bo proudly clutching it in 1959.

John Paul Jones’ Triple Neck Arch-Top Mandolin

The Led Zeppelin multi-instrumentalist's unique Triple Neck Arch-Top Mandolin was created by luthier Andy Manson in the mid-1970s and swiftly became a mainstay of Led Zep concerts. The famous electroacoustic instrument boasts 8-string mandolin, 12-string guitar, and 6-string guitar necks. Manson said decades later: "I designed and made the triple neck and took it to John's house. I said, 'Hi John I thought this might interest you.' He said, 'Wow, yes indeed, I can't wait to see Pagey's face when I walk on stage with this!' It cost £400 and I skipped off down the road feeling like a millionaire."

Prince’s Love Symbol Guitar

Pictured is Prince with a purple Love Symbol guitar in at The Grammy Awards in February 2004 where he performed his anthem 'Purple Rain'. Prince's range of Love Symbol guitars were based on the shape of the unpronounceable symbol he adopted as his moniker in 1993 in an act of rebellion against his record label, Warner Bros.

Steve Vai’s Ibanez Triple-Neck Red Heart Guitar

The virtuoso musician designed his Ibanez custom built triple neck with heart-shaped body guitar in 1988 as he wanted something "eye-catching" for the video to David Lee Roth's 'Just Like Paradise'. Steve Vai himself admits the guitar is "odd" and there have been three incarnations of the instrument – the original Red Heart, a spare called Red Heart II and a Purple Heart. Steve used the latter guitar on the Ultra Zone tour and wrote the song 'Fever Dream' with it.

Pat Metheny’s Pikasso Guitar

Canadian master luthier Linda Manzer created The Pikasso Guitar in 1984 when jazz artist Pat Metheny requested a guitar that had "as many strings as possible." The completely unique resulting instrument has 42 strings arranged in four different string sections.

Gene Simmons’ Axe Bass

Back in 1978, Gene Simmons joined forces with master luthier Steve Carr to create a unique bass guitar shaped like an axe that would suit his on-stage Demon persona perfectly. The resulting weapon-like instrument – aptly entitled The Axe Bass – is a true classic. Now a running trademark for KISS, there have been a number of incarnations of the Axe Bass including the pictured Cort GS-Axe-2 bass guitar Gene is aggressively clutching at the 2010 NAMM Show.

Michael Anthony’s Jack Daniel’s Bass

Michael Anthony's now famous Jack Daniel's Bass was created back in 1983 while Van Halen were working on their musical masterpiece '1984'. Anthony's guitar tech and good friend Kevin 'Dugie' Dugan was charged with creating the bass, which was made with the blessing of Jack Daniel's on one condition – that only three guitars were made. One is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum, one is in storage and one is still used by Michael Anthony to this very day.

John Entwistle’s Buzzard Bass

The Ox played the iconic Buzzard Bass for the final 17 years of his career from 1985 to his untimely passing in 2002. Entwistle worked with Hans Peter Wilfer, founder of Warwick basses, on the striking bass and the pair came up with the moniker Buzzard after imbibing numerous drinks at London nightclub Maggie's – neither could remember who first suggested the name. After they picked the name, the headstock was tweaked to resemble the beak of a buzzard.

John Fogerty’s Baseball Bat Guitar

Crafted by Philip Kubicki, John Fogerty named his unique guitar 'Slugger' in homage to the Louisville Slugger baseball bat. Created in 1985 when his album 'Centerfield' came out, Fogerty donated the instrument to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2010. Fogerty said at the time: "That guitar means a lot to me. It's symbolizes two of my great loves, baseball and the guitar. When 'Centerfield' came out, it was after a long break and was such an important album to me on many levels. The lessons of baseball - the hits, the misses, the triumphs, and the losses - were something that I could really relate to in my life. So I got this idea to make a baseball bat guitar and of course, it had to be a Louisville Slugger."

Ian Hunter’s Maltese Cross Guitar

Ian Hunter's Maltese Cross Guitar was designed by American luthier Harvey Thomas in the 1970s. Despite its iconic status, Hunter says the guitar looked good but didn't sound great and he sold it a number of years ago. Def Leppard and Planet Rock's Joe Elliott had two new Maltese Crosses made for Hunter's 70th birthday in 2009 that Hunter says sounded "GREAT!" Hunter says: "There are only two in the world. I think it's really neat that a guitar can look that good AND sound so good. Very cool!! Praise be to Joe!!!"

Bumblefoot’s Vigier Flying Foot guitar

As the name suggests, Bumblefoot's Vigier Flying Foot features a pink foot on the guitar body complete with wings that pop out. Bumblefoot says of his beloved instrument: "Vigier spent 5 months building this guitar by hand - it's truly a masterpiece. Incredible detail on the guitar, down to the toenails. When you bend down the vibrato bar, wings pop out of the sides. They gave me this guitar at the NAMM convention in Los Angeles, January 1998. Plays and sounds the best of all my guitars - it's my main guitar."

George Lynch’s Mom

Influential Lynch Mob and ex-Dokken axeman George Lynch unveiled his skull and bones guitar – affectionately called 'Mom' – in the mid 1980s. Designed and hand-crafted by artist John 'J. Frog' Garcia, the guitar also featured an ESP Guitars decal on the headstock as Lynch was contracted with them at the time.

Andrew WK’s Taco Guitar

Hard partying rocker Andrew WK unveiled a delicious Taco Guitar to mark National Taco Day on 4th October 2017. His second foray into food-themed instruments following his Pizza Guitar a few years earlier, the custom Taco Guitar was created with ESP Guitars. WK said at the time: "I realised that since I had paid tribute to pizza, I now had to pay tribute to tacos in all their glory. I was destined to make a taco shaped guitar. This is proof that if you have the vision, no matter how outlandish or unruly, the team at ESP Guitars can turn it into a beautiful reality. And they only use the highest quality materials and they're truly master craftsmen. Absolutely mind-blowing attention to detail and playability. There's no compromise when it comes to the integrity of the instrument, or the hardness of the party."

Misa Kitara Guitar Shaped MIDI Controller

Not technically a guitar, the Misa Kitara was a short-lived digital MIDI controller and musical instrument that was developed on 2011 and discontinued just two years later. Taking its name from the Finnish word for guitar (kitara), the instrument combined touch buttons for strings and frets with an 8-inch multi-touch screen that creates a variety of sound effects. Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme can be seen playing a modified Misa Kitara in the video to the band's 2012 song 'Madness.'

Dave Hill’s Super Yob Guitar

Famed for his outrageous costumes and hilarious haircut, it seemed only right that Slade axeman Dave Hill had a unique and eccentric guitar. Created by luthier John Birch in 1973, the Super Yob was styled after a science fiction ray gun and instantly became synonymous with Dave Hill. Guitarist and songwriter Marco Pirroni bought the original Super Yob in the early eighties, but Hill has since had a replica made.

John 5’s Fender Telecaster Lava Lamp Guitar

John 5 has a number of eye-catching guitars in his arsenal, but the Fender Telecaster Lava Lamp Guitar is arguably the standout instrument of the lot. John 5 says: "It's heavy as hell but it's really cool because it lights up on stage… it weighs a ton! It sounds really good. There's anti-freeze in it because when I ship it abroad it might freeze and crack the guitar."

Ginger Wildheart’s Smiley Bones Guitar

Based on The Wildhearts' fearsome logo, this truly phenomenal Smiley Bones Guitar was created in 2015 by Devil & Sons Guitars. Daniel Wallis made the guitar for Ginger Wildheart to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 'P.H.U.Q.' album as a replacement for the original guitar which came out when the album was released but was later stolen. He explains to Planet Rock: "I sent some images of it to Ginger who loved it but asked if I could make a few changes so it met a perfect spec for him to play live. Instead of making the changes I just made another so there were in fact two that I made. Part of his spec was to have a particular BC Rich neck put on it, which I did, but then he decided that to play it live it would be better with a 24-fret neck, so I made that change too."

Zakk Wylde’s Epiphone Graveyard Disciple guitar

Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society axeman Zakk Wylde with one of this Epiphone Graveyard Disciple signature guitars on stage in 2009. Nicknamed the 'Bo Deadly' by Zakk, the Graveyard Disciple comes in a coffin shaped case and features a crucifix on the body and headstock. Nice.

Eric Bloom’s Blue Öyster Cult Logo Guitar

We couldn't do this list without including Eric Bloom's famed guitar shaped like the Blue Öyster Cult logo. The bespoke guitar was created by master luthier Ronaldo at Pastore's Music in Union City, New Jersey. In case you're wondering, the logo was created by Bill Gawlik, the artist behind BOC's first and second album covers, and it's a stylization of the astronomical symbol for the planet Saturn.

Bootsy Collins’ Star-Shaped Space Bass

The flamboyant James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic bassist's first Star-Shaped Space Bass was created in 1975 by fledgling guitar maker Larry Pless who worked at an accordon shop called Gus Zoppi Music in Warren, Michigan. Since then there have been numerous incarnations of the Star-Shaped Space Bass, including Bootsy's current signature Warwick star basses, but the basic design has stayed the same.

Brian May’s Red Special Guitar

Easily one of the most famous guitars in the history of rock music, Brian May created the Red Special with his dad Harold as a teenager in 1963 as he couldn't afford a Fender, Gibson or Höfner guitar. Designed to intentionally create feedback, the guitar has helped define Brian May's signature sound and he's performed almost exclusively with it throughout Queen's prime in the 1970s and 1980s until this present day.

Todd Rundgren's Veleno Ankh Guitar

Todd Rundgren's aluminium ankh-shaped guitar was created by metal craftsman John Veleno in the early 1970s. Highly regarded for their aesthetic appearance and also distinct playing style, a series of Velono guitars were made for a number of artists. Rundgren loved his so much, he had two made.

The Dean V Dave Mustaine Double Neck Electric Guitar

Dave Mustaine's bespoke double neck guitar, created by Dean, has been one of his main instruments for the past decade. Thanks to its jagged shape and the metal artwork emblazoned on the body, the guitar is an absolute aesthetic triumph – a behemoth of an instrument that suits Megadeth's brutal music perfectly.

Rob Davis’ Heart-Shaped Guitar

Mud guitarist Rob Davis played his famous red heart-shaped guitar during the glam rockers' commercial peak in the 1970s and he still performs with it to this very day. Here he is proudly flaunting the guitar in a promo shoot with Mud almost five decades ago.

Prince’s yellow ‘Cloud’ Guitar

Late music legend Prince had an extensive and highly flamboyant custom guitar collection consisting of more than 100 instruments. Among the standout instruments was Prince's yellow "Cloud" guitar, which sold for $225,000 under the hammer in 2018.

Rick Nielsen’s Uncle Dick

A prolific collector, Rick Nielsen has amassed over 2,000 guitars over the decades. Alongside his trademark Five Neck (also pictured here), arguably the most famous of the bunch is his Hamer 'Uncle Dick' double neck guitar from 1983, which is based on a likeness of himself.

Michael Angelo Batio’s Quad Guitar

As seen in the video to his 2020 song 'Time Traveller', Michael Angelo Batio also invented the Quad-Guitar, which features – you guessed it – two sets of twin-neck V-shaped guitars. Outrageous yet highly impressive!

Lita Ford’s B.C. Rich Monkey Train guitar

The former Runaways rocker unveiled her train-themed B.C. Rich Monkey Train guitar in her 'Playin' With Fire' official video in 1991. Lita told Guitar Afficionado a few years back: "I got into B.C. Rich. I was always over there carving out new ideas and helping to make new stuff. They would make anything I asked them to make."

James Hetfield’s Carl Guitar

In 2018, James Hetfield proudly showed off his unique new guitar – dubbed Carl – to Metallica fans. The rugged instrument is named after 3132 Carlson Boulevard in El Cerrito, California, where Metallica were based during their breakthrough years from 1983 to 1986. The garage was later demolished but James's friend Andy Anderson of the Bay Area thrash group Attitude Adjustment kept eight pieces of wood from the heavy metal landmark and gifted them to him years later. Papa Het then enlisted the services of master custom guitar maker Ken Lawrence to craft him an instrument using those planks of wood. Carl featured on Metallica's WorldWired World Tour where it was used for performances of 'Hardwired… to Self-Destruct' track 'Moth Into Flame.'

Dan Hartman’s Bass Suit

Unfortunately, we've been unable to acquire an image of the late Dan Hartman's Bass Suit but there's no way we can miss it out! The Edgar Winter Group bassist and solo musician paid a reported $5,000 for the suit in 1974 (huge money at the time), which he designed with Los Angeles couturier Bill Witten. Made from a rubbery fabric that featured the instrument in the pelvic pocket, the Bass Suit's controls are on the sleeve attached to an aluminium plate and the guitar neck ends with a crescent moon.

Stig Pederson’s iPhone Bass

Stig Pedersen, bassist/vocalist of Danish rock band D-A-D, has a number of outlandish bass creations that he performs with including a rocket shaped bass, a reverse bass where the head stock and body are swopped around, and a transparent bass. He hit the headlines in 2018 when he unveiled his latest playful creation – a bass shaped like an iPhone.

The epic instant grat track,  “Fuzz Mountain” , can also be found on the album.

Today also marks the release of the official music video for the album’s anthemic title track,  “Warriors.”  The music video was directed by  Evan Dennis  at the Germania Club in Hamilton, ON, and is an ode to 90’s  WWE /WWF wrestling.

“The “Warriors” video was pure joy from start to finish. Evan perfectly executed the vision we gave him as a reference, and added so much creativity to it. From the timing of certain moves, to the animated intro, and the 90s video transitions, Evan captured the nostalgic feeling we were looking for and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome,”  said  Jon Harvey of Monster Truck .

“All the wrestlers deserve a great deal of credit as well. It was a very long day and they gave it their all until we wrapped. So many great personalities and moments made a very seamless day with many smiles and high fives all round, and I think that vibe is easily recognizable from watching the video. All in all, probably the most fun I’ve ever had on a video shoot.”

“Monster Truck brings so much physical energy to their performance that we got so much great footage. That paired with the wrestling was super fun to cut. This project is the reason I love doing music videos, because you get to bring these crazy ideas to life, experiment with techniques and just have a great time on set. That’s what it’s all about,”  said Evan Dennis, “Warriors” music video director .

Since the release of their debut self-titled EP in 2010, Monster Truck, comprised of bassist and lead singer  Jon Harvey , guitarist  Jeremy Widerman , and keyboardist  Brandon Bliss , have become known as one of Canada’s hardest-working rock ‘n roll bands, a reputation they’ve cemented by touring relentlessly and consistently upping their game.

Over time, Monster Truck has remained true to their core sound while continuously building on that foundation and stretching out, lyrically and sonically. Their ability to do so successfully and satisfyingly has only deepened the impact of their records and grown their audience globally with the release of their new album.

Monster Truck recently launched a brand new website featuring their new merchandise and details on their upcoming UK headline tour. Stay up to date on all Monster Truck news at  www.ilovemonstertruck.com .

Monster Truck explode back onto the scene with their incredible new song and music video for “Golden Woman”.

“Golden Woman” is a fast paced, unrelenting, rock n roll jam and marks the first release off their highly anticipated forthcoming album and follows the band's recent global signing with BMG.

“The idea for “Golden Woman” came one afternoon as I was fiddling around on a kid’s guitar my father had bought my son. He got it at some garage sale and thought it perfect for little hands. I ended up picking it up, putting the strap over my head, and walking around with it all afternoon playing the main riff, and slowly crafting an arrangement. Jer and I then fine-tuned the song, and voila! Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere,” said Jon Harvey, bassist, and lead singer of Monster Truck. “The lyrics were born of my own personal experience with my partner, Simara. She saved me during a very rough time, and I am forever grateful for her, and the mystical revelations that only love can bring. Her hair colour is naturally blonde, so the title of the song is, like all Monster Truck songs, very literal.”

The band also today announce a twelve date headline tour of the UK, kicking off in Dover on 29th September through to Nottingham on October 17th.

Review & Photography by Manny Manson for MPM

This is a band I’m always eager to go see since I first saw them support Nickelback back in 2016. They stormed on stage like a Tsunami and completely rocked the opening set.

To be fair, for me, they stole the show. High energy rock n roll and songs full of blues fuzz distortion that just resonated, I loved them from the get go.

Now in 2022 I have seen them a few more times each show being better than the last, oh maybe apart from the Rescue Rooms show in April 2017, it seemed that Jeremy was a bit pre occupied with his amp and his usual high-octane performance was a little shall we say flat. I remember the night well as I was the only tog in the pit, which by the Rescue Rooms standards was massive.

July that same year I saw them up a mountain in Wales in the rain. I’m pleased to say Jeremy was back firing on all cylinders, the band smashed it as the weather turned and it rained while topless Jeremy was hooning around. A stunning set once again.

I missed the 2018 triple header tour with Black Stone Cherry and The Cadillac Three due to having to be elsewhere that December. Gutted wasn’t the word. I then picked the band up in a small venue in Leicester called the Cookie. Down in its basement it was a close intermit gig, in fact apart from sharing the toilet with Jon Harvey, we never actually saw the band play. The roof was that low it was like being in an old tube station corridor. The place absolutely rocked mind, the fans in knew the score and were true Truck fans.

Tonight, these boys from Hamilton, Ontario are set to give KK’s a new one. With a cracking new album released today they now have four studio albums under their belt since starting out in 2009. Furiosity in 2013, Sittin’ Heavy in 2015, True Rockers in 2018 and now Warriors.

They have supported John Garcia’s Vista Chino and Alice In Chains, Slash, Nickelback, have won a Juno award for breakthrough band of the year played the Download Festival on more than one occasion and even had their songs featured in a couple of EA Sports NHL video games. In fact, the song ‘The Enforcer’ is used by the Toronto Maple Leafs after every goal with the addition of the “go Leafs go” chant added to the song.

Before we get to hear the ‘Truck’ we have a little something special on first. The darlings of South Wales and one of the hardest working bands on the circuit, Those Damn Crows . A full summer festival season behind them the band are back on the road much to their fans delight. Shane and the boys deserve the rewards as they continue to deliver stellar shows where ever they appear.

Formed in Bridgend, Wales in 2014 their brand of hard rock quickly struck a chord and a loyal following quickly ensued. In 2017, Planet Rock declared them as a band to watch, and in 2018 Metal Hammer heralded them as ‘Band of the Week’. They signed a multi-album deal with Nottingham based Earache records and released their debut album ‘Murder and Motive’ in the October of the same year, 2018. An earlier self-funded release of the album from 2016 is a gem that is heavily sought after by the fans, it includes several different tracks.

On the back of their hard work the band went onto play at the both Download and Planet Rocks, Winters End festivals in 2019.

February 2020 a second album was released ‘Point of no Return’ this went down a storm with the fans who were now eager for new songs from the band.

They went on to play Download main stage in 2022. A new album entitled ‘Inhale/Exhale’ is scheduled for release in February 2023. The single ‘Wake Me’ from the new album made an appearance in the bands set list when they played Chepstow Castle on August 11 th . Tonight, will be interesting to see which other, if any new songs get an airing.

Hitting the main stage on time the band set up while the crow appears to watch from the back screen, its beady eye is on us all. Shane walks on to the stage his arms out and the noise level goes off the scale.

Opening with ‘Who Did It’ the lazy beat thunders out as they settle in. Ronnie is smiling hard as, animated, he hits the snare, hard. Shane is on point; he’s playing to the crowd already. The band are tight as the crowd join in with the singing much to the bands delight.

Long Time Dead’ continues with a faster pacier drum riff, Lloyd and Dave are at the mics giving it the BV’s, whilst Shiner in Shades and bike leather is stood alone on the other side of the stage like a naughty school boy. The almost blast beats in the middle propel this crowd pleaser to a huge finish the crowd enjoyed that one!

monster truck band tour uk

‘Don’t give a Damn’ has the Shane that everyone loves he’s off and running. Well known for his climbing antics he’s a bit restricted here so during this one he makes the first of several visits to the security barrier, almost falling into the crowd as he reaches in. This is what the crowd want.

The song is a banger and drives on as Shane races about, despite having put a bit of timber on , listen to his Crow cast with Jon Harvey, he’s light on his toes.

‘Send the Reaper’ is up next the bouncing tune has the crowd bouncing, to be fair they haven’t stopped all night. There’s a good crowd in tonight so despite the miserable weather outside its hot in hear. The lighting is great as David and Lloyd are rocking out hard on-stage right, Shiner is belting it out. Shane brings it all back down and the crowd love it, they can do no wrong tonight.

monster truck band tour uk

Stopping to get a drink, Shane goes on to tell the fans that they’ve been working on a new record, it’s out in Feb 2023, it’s fucking awesome it, he tells us, he teases and says let’s hear one from the new album, entitled Inhale/Exhale it’s called ‘Wake up’.

Not a completely new song to the set as it has featured earlier in the year and was released as the single to the album, its video being on YouTube. Ronnie’s crushing drum beat wakes everyone up, not that they were sleeping, white spots caress the stage as Shane and the boys serenade the fans with this belter of a tune, looking around the Damn Crows tee shirts are dancing like a murder of crows in a field eating seed.

‘Blink of an Eye’ takes us back to the debut album, Murder and The Motive, a copy of the earlier 2016’s, self-released version is exchanging for big money, you try and get a copy of it. But before that kicks off a fan shouts out “you killed Download” Shane quickly replies “Thanks Brother” he’s on the barrier again. ”who was at down load” at least half the room thrust their hands skyward in response. ”we played the fucking main stage, how mad is that? It about the size of KK’s” the crowd cheer as the song strikes up, the fans still have their hands up clapping as we rock out.

monster truck band tour uk

“It was Shiners birthday yesterday, I fucking love that boy” shouts Shane as we move in to ‘Sin on Skin’ from ‘Point of No Return’. This has been a master class in how to be a frontman and how to be a good support band. Fans have travel from far and wide to see them tonight and they are disappointing. ‘Go get It’ follows on from the same album. The crowd are still on their toes as Shane, powered by who knows what is still racing around.

He gets the crowd to count in this heavy hitter, we have a coupler of trial runs and then as the roof comes off with the third attempt, he leaps off the riser he’s been crouched on and we’re away, a crushing wall of sound envelopes the venue. Shane is on it as he points around the room, the faithful being picked out.

This anthemic banger has the crowd cheering as Ronnie gives his kick a sound beating, a stunning penultimate track. That being the rocking ‘Rock and Roll Ain’t Dead’. “ do you love rock n roll” shouts Shane, he gets the crowd to sing the whoah whoa whoa, the crowd have been there before and are on it, Shanes smile says it all as he screams “everybody” and we sing back as one voice. The sweat is pouring from him as he patrols the stage like a hunting U-Boat in the Channel.

monster truck band tour uk

Ronnie’s drums thunder out as Shane is again on the barrier chanting back and forth with the crowd before Dave, his white Les Paul takes the song forward with a growling riff. Shane carries on with the call and answer with the crowd bringing the song to an end he thanks the crowd for turning up the boys riff out the end of the song as Shane gets the crowd to sing out “We Are Those Damn Crows”. What a bloody set! Simple as! We loved that wow!

The Usual stage swap over happens as folk run off to get a wet, it’s been a warm one. I bump into my mate the awesome Pete Kermally on my way to the bar, a fellow Monster Truck fan, he’s here early for the weekender N.W.O.C.R. that KK’s is hosting over the weekend. It’s great to see this man, If I could have a big brother, he’d be my first choice, a lovely man. If you get the chance get along to a venue where he’s appearing, his energy is through the roof, he’s a great comedian and compere.

The intro tape starts and the band walk out onto a stage bathed in blue light. The cheers are palpable as big smiling Jon Harvey grins from behind his hair as he stand like a statue behind his microphone. Jeremy, his yellow SG hanging from his shirtless top, is screaming at the crowd already, he’s had a shearing since the last time I saw him back in 2019, he now sports a trendy hipster style headpiece.

Kicking the set off with ‘Don’t Tell Me How to Live’, I’m a happy man, this is a stunning ballsy track that kicks you in the face from the get go, and one of my favourites from the Sophomore album ‘Sittin Heavy’. We get the anthemic chanter from ‘Old Train’ from the first album next, another thunderous track has Jeremy swapping sides, he’s like a Duracell bunny, like Shane he’s trying to reach all parts of the crowd who are bouncing to this thumping number.

monster truck band tour uk

She’s a Witch’ is up third. A fast paced grinder, but then aren’t all Monster Truck tunes, it’s number about a girl with a demon in her eye. The guitar is fat with distortion as it smacks you full on. The bass is gut wrenching as this one bounces along. The venue is still packed out so it’s great to see that the Those Damn Crows faithful are stopping around to catch these Canadian Monsters.

The relentless driving wall of sound continues with the only tune to feature from the third album True Rocker’s, an experimental album where the band tried different things including a cameo from the great Dee Snider on the title track. It’s not a bad album by any stretch just, shall we say different, oh yeah, the song is ‘Denim Danger’ the solo break down is tasty and has the whoah’s filling the backing ground along with the anthemic sing a long “this is our town”. A worthy addition to the set although I would love to see ‘Thunder truck’ played live.

‘Golden Woman’ is the first to get an airing from the new album, this was released today, the day of the of the KK’s gig. It’s an absolute belter of a track. We now have the ‘Truck’ firing on all cylinders. The percussive beats from new drummer, Theo McKibben are breath taking, animated like animal from the muppets he’s given this one a new one! The vocals are coming at you hard and fast, Jon is smiling as he destroys this one, brilliant as Jon screams out the finish of the song.

The punishment continues with ‘The Enforcer’ from Sittin’ Heavy. A song full of angst as it thunders away, wooooah woah owah chants fil this one and the crowd are happy to help out at this powers along like a run away express train.

monster truck band tour uk

John shouts out “how about Those Damn Crows” which gets a huge cheer from the congregation in tonight.

The piano chimes up as Brandon, now side on, tickles the ivories to the stunning ‘Black Forest’, again from Sitting Heavy. The piano sound has a Bob Fridzema feel to it, and a delivery not un similar to Alan Nemo of KING KING. The guitar is relaxed and full of bluesy loveliness, the notes dripping off Jeremys fingers as the song builds to a keyboard finish, beautiful and one of my stand out songs of the set.

We get a treat now as we’re treated to a run of songs from the new album. The awesome ‘Fuzz Mountain’ is up next about finding somewhere you can be alone and just play guitar and enjoy. The guitar is ridiculous in this one, the stage lights are dancing all over the stage as Jeremy’s compressed guitar sound howls out. Theo is steamrollering a steady beat from behind the kit as, Brandon’s keys are woven deep within the textured layers of this one as it plays out.

“Shall we keep going with new songs” shouts Jon, “This ones called Live Free” and again the hard-hitting drums kick in, to be fair I don’t think they’ve paused between the songs played so far. The guitar slots in and chugg’s along, Jon’s huge bass sound is rattling the fillings in my head as he rocks out, a slick solo breaks the onslaught but its soon back as Jon’s voice is immense as he cries out the close of the song. ‘Country Livin’ is up next, a departure from the usual hard-hitting sounds, it is a country song worthy of any of the old guard in Southern rock.

monster truck band tour uk

It’s a great song full of Allman Brothers, The Marshall Tucker band type vibes. A solid track full of slide guitar and whiskey drinking, it wouldn’t be out of place at a Nashville hoe down, which closes off the run of new songs for the moment.

We get a quick journey back to the more laid-back vibe of the first album, Furiosity, the meaty ‘For the Sun’. Jon introduces it by saying “ we’re going to play you a blues song”. The sleazy blues riff spills from Jeremy’s fingers as Jon laments gently. How good is this song? Its full of restraint and purpose as its treated with respect, this song means a lot to the band as, with sweat running down his face Jon smiles as he delivers.

The high paced antics of Jeremy are leashed as he noodles a sublime lick the smoke dancing in the spotlights as he does so. The keys swirl along wrapping around the solid bass line as Theo tickles the kit in comparison to how he’s been pulverising it earlier. Another stand out track delivered and received with respect this one is a proper goose bumper! I love this one as do the crowd judging by the huge cheers as it dies with a swirling keyboard finish.

“Let me tell you a little story” harks Jon as a Reverend Billy Gibbons type riff rattles out as we go into another fresh tune, ‘Get My Things and Go’ those fans amongst us will have seen the video released played by children wearing false beards, it gives a kids eye view of a serious relationship issue. Jon ventures stage left and lets loose with his hair, swinging his curly locks around, smiling, no doubt covering the from row in sweat, he’s rocking out hard and fast as Jeremy kills another, solid solo.

Jon’s back on the mic once again, asking “Are you still with us?” “ do you feel good” the crowd as one, responds with a hell yeah and Jon’s back “that’s good enough for me, this song is called New Soul” and a belter it is from ‘Sittin Heavy’. Jeremys vibrato on the riffs is Kossoff like in its ferocity a stunning display as this one bangs along at a high pace. Jeremy screams to the crowd and instigates a round of heavy clapping from the crowd. The man is relentless as he continues to fly around the stage. The thundering drums and bassline are relentless in their attempt to knock down walls. A great track which finishes in cheers from the crowd.

“We got two more, this is the first off the new record” screams Jon, ‘Warriors’ an anthemic masterpiece which has the crowd joining in from the get go, they’ve done their homework. The thundering beat continues as Jon sings about fighting in the trenches then the crowd join in with the anthemic singalong “All for one and One for all” as Jon screams it at us. Solid and brutal, the song breaks down like a truck on fire, the scorching solo tries to rip your face off as it screams over an assault of crushing bass and drums. If you’ve seen the video you know there is a nod to the Ultimate Warrior and several WWE wrestlers, it’s a fun Video.

Jeremy screams into his mic, “one more song”. Jon thanks us for all coming out and supporting the band, he says “get home safe, and be kind to others” as the band starts, Jon quickly adds “let’s see if you know this one”! The familiar riff of ‘Sweet Mountain River’ hits us squarely in the jaw. Another banger from the first album, a fitting end to the set and it rocks.

Fire columns light the venue as they stream from the stage front, and no doubt scorches the eyebrows of the those on the barrier. The fire continues through the track as we get called on to join in the singing. The song finishes and we get hands and guitar in the air. The boys quickly leave to cheers and whistles. This is old school, of late we haven’t had bands leave the stage before playing the encore. The energy that they deliver with I can’t fault them leaving for a quick wipe down.

The usual chanting, cheering and whistling commences and before too long Theo is back behind the kit pounding out a rebellious beat. The band, are now back on stage. Jon says “ how about that Theo McKibben on drums”, to a huge roar from the crowd. The band then drop into the thundering sing a long ‘Why Are You Not Rocking’, again another from ‘Sittin Heavy’ album. The crowd are on their toes as Jeremy, once again, flies around the stage, we join in with the singing as the songs gets brought down.

Jon screams out “One More’, “this song is about never giving up” as flames scorch the front row, we get the obvious set closer ‘The Lion’. Spotlights swirl around like police searchlights as the song grinds out.

The crowd are clapping along as Jeremy slams out a fuzz filled solo. Jon Cries out again “ what about those damn crows, tell your friends this is a tour not to be missed, we’re just getting started” and the flames and solid onslaught continue.

The song is finally brought down with a hurricane of noise. The crowd erupt, huge cheers and claps engulf the venue as the band leave the stage Jon stops and says “thank you very much, we appreciate you from the bottom of our hearts we’ll see you again” and leaves the stage while the clapping continues. The outro tape chimes in and the lights come on. Wowzers that was something a bit special. We’ve been treated a Monster Truck Greatest Hits set. That needs to put out there as either a live show, DVD of at the least a compilation, what a set.

Monster Truck have smashed it yet again, that was a masterclass in Rock n Roll Canadian style. Hard Fast and in your face. If you haven’t caught the ‘Truck’ yet, do yourself a favour get to a show near you as soon as possible preferabley on this tour and be prepared for an onslaught of titanic riffs and thundering bass, at this rate they’ll be filling arenas!

Brilliant! We liked this one a lot!

Monster Truck have announced they’ll support Nickelback on their upcoming UK tour and confirmed a new album is in the works.

The Canadian rockers are in their Toronto studio with producer Eric Ratz and are aiming for a summer release.

In November, the band will open for Nickelback on their eight-date UK jaunt. Guitarist Jeremy Widerman says: “What a peculiar and exciting experience it is to be simultaneously working on our new record and preparing for another trek across UK and Europe. We couldn’t possibly be more excited to share the big stage with Nickelback and make our third trip overseas.”

The album will be the follow-up to 2013’s Furiosity .

SPILL NEWS: JUNO AWARD-WINNING ROCK BAND MONSTER TRUCK ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM ‘WARRIORS’ SET TO ARRIVE ON SEPTEMBER 30 VIA BMG | NEW TRACK “FUZZ MOUNTAIN” OUT NOW

JUNO AWARD-WINNING ROCK BAND MONSTER TRUCK ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM WARRIORS SET TO ARRIVE ON SEPTEMBER 30 VIA BMG

New track “fuzz mountain” out now.

JUNO Award-winning rock band Monster Truck are excited to announce the release of their fourth full-length album Warriors , set to arrive on September 30th via BMG and all streaming platforms (pre-save HERE ).

The 10-track album, produced by multiple GRAMMY and JUNO Award-winning producer Eric Ratz (Arkells, Big Wreck, Billy Talent), is everything you would expect from Monster Truck and more, bringing the band’s signature, riff-driven brand of rock to new heights.

“I think this record was a real eye-opener that we should be trusting ourselves and doing exactly what we feel is right,” said Jon Harvey, bassist, and lead singer of Monster Truck. “It’s an affirmation of our mission statement to have a good time, be respectful, and get out there and party. I think that’s the main theme of this album. It’s about being a warrior in life and fighting for what you deserve.”

The epic instant grat track “Fuzz Mountain” is available now. The lyrics are a testament to the mountain of distortion pedals used to record it.

“Fuzz Mountain was born of the unhealthy love of guitar fuzz through large amplifiers, at punishing volumes. I imagined a little house on a hill where I could sit with all my amps and pedals and just melt my brain. My imaginary holy place. The lyrics and riff came at a time where I would try to daisy-chain fuzz pedals for, sometimes, unlistenable results. Just me, a bunch of fuzz, tune power and a bunch of speakers pushing air in my face. I ain’t never gonna leave,” said Jon Harvey.

The new album will showcase the band’s spectacular, visceral rock ‘n roll trademark sound that’s big-bottomed, badass, and brutally honest in tracks such as “I Got A Feelin’,” “Wild Man,” and “Country Livin’”.

Warriors will also include the recently released single, “ Get My Things & Go ,” a swampy, bluesy rock ‘n roll blast to the face that is climbing the Canadian charts and is currently at #6 on Active Rock (MB) and #8 on Mainstream Rock (BDS). Additionally,  “ Golden Woman ,” a fast-paced, unrelenting jam that marked the first track off the album and peaked at #6 on the iTunes Rock chart, can also be found on the album.

Since the release of their debut self-titled EP in 2010, Monster Truck, comprised of bassist and lead singer Jon Harvey, guitarist Jeremy Widerman, and keyboardist Brandon Bliss, have become known as one of Canada’s hardest-working rock ‘n roll bands, a reputation they’ve cemented by touring relentlessly and consistently upping their game.

In 2011, the Canadian rockers released The Brown EP, featuring tracks that soon became staples on Canadian rock radio and set the stage for their debut full-length album Furiosity . After its release, Furiosity rose to success, reaching #13 on the Canadian charts and leading to a JUNO Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year, and a nomination for JUNO Rock Album of the Year.

Touring in support of Furiosity , the band played high-profile gigs such as UK’s Download Festival, landed supporting slots on the European tours of bands like Vista Chino, embarked on their first headlining tour of the continent, and headed across North America with the likes of Slash and Alice in Chains.

The band continued to deliver new music in 2016 with the release of Sittin’ Heavy and hit the road again with over 150 shows over the next 18 months on their own and in arenas supporting Nickelback, Billy Talent, and Deep Purple on their final European tour. They later released True Rockers in 2018, which further cemented their reputation as a hard-rocking band respected by their peers and progenitors.

Monster Truck’s profile has grown substantially in North America, with the band landing headlining slots at Rock on the Range and Shiprocked in the US, and securing song placements for tracks “Sweet Mountain River,” “Seven Seas Blues,” and “Old Train,” which appeared in Ubisoft’s game, Rocksmith 2014, EA Sports’ NHL 13 and the hit TV series, Orphan Black. Additionally, “Righteous Smoke” was featured on EA’s NHL 17, and “The Enforcer” became the ‘goal song’ for The Toronto Maple Leafs.

Over time, Monster Truck has remained true to their core sound while continuously building on that foundation and stretching out, lyrically and sonically. Their ability to do so successfully and satisfyingly has only deepened the impact of their records and grown their audience globally as they gear up to release their new album this September.

Monster Truck will also be launching a brand new web store soon that will feature the band’s new merchandise. Stay up to date on Monster Truck news at  www.ilovemonstertruckcom .
