JUDAS PRIEST kicked off its spring/summer 2022 European tour with an intimate concert on May 31 in Berlin, Germany. For the gig, which was held at the 1,600-capacity Huxleys Neue Welt venue, singer Rob Halford and his bandmates ditched their traditional leather-and-studs look in favor of a more stripped-down appearance.

Last month, Halford told ABC Audio that PRIEST was in the process of "tracking" follow-up to 2018's "Firepower" album.

"You can never have enough songs when you're making an album," he said. "Songs that you didn't even know you had bits and pieces and fragments of, suddenly they become an incredibly important part of your record."

Regarding the musical direction of the new JUDAS PRIEST material, Rob said: "The music that we're making now is representative of where PRIEST is at this probably sixth decade of our existence when it comes out… It sounds great. I'm really pleased. I'm really, really happy that… we're not dropping the ball. Not that we ever have. But it's good, because there are some elements in there that we've never… kind of discovered before."

More than a year ago, Halford confirmed that PRIEST 's next album will see the band reuniting with the "Firepower" production team consisting of Andy Sneap , longtime collaborator Tom Allom and engineer Mike Exeter ( BLACK SABBATH ).

Bassist Ian Hill is the sole remaining original member of PRIEST , which formed in 1969. Halford joined the group in 1973 and guitarist Glenn Tipton signed on in 1974. Rob left PRIEST in the early 1990s to form his own band, then came back to PRIEST in 2003. Founding guitarist K.K. Downing parted ways with the band in 2011, and was replaced by Richie Faulkner .

Tipton was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease eight years ago after being stricken by the condition at least half a decade earlier. Tipton announced in early 2018 he was going to sit out touring activities in support of "Firepower" . He was replaced by Sneap , who is also known for his work in NWOBHM revivalists HELL and cult thrash outfit SABBAT .

This past March, Faulkner told the "Metal From The Inside" podcast about the recording process for the new PRIEST album: "It's been slowed down a lot because of, obviously, the pandemic. We wanted to get together, like we did on 'Firepower' , and record it together, but, obviously, the lockdowns and everything like that slowed that process [down]. Some of us live in the U.S., some of us live in the U.K., so getting together proved to be a bit difficult over the last couple of years. Now everything is kind of opening up, it's a bit easier, but now we're on the road, so we've got a touring cycle [to get through]. So, if we can, we might be able to do it in between the touring cycles."

As for when fans can expect to get the next PRIEST album, Faulkner said: "We don't have a release date. It's not finished. We've got the songs, but we've gotta record it. We've got drums down. I don't know if that's even been said yet. So we're gonna try and build it up as we move through this touring cycle. But as Rob always says, it'll be finished when it's finished. At this point in their career, there's no point in rushing anything, especially when we've waited this long through the pandemic to start doing it. It'll be done when it's done. But there will be another PRIEST record. We've got some great songs."

Regarding the musical direction of the new PRIEST material, Richie said: "It's different to 'Firepower' , but it's definitely… You can hear where it's coming from. It's not even 'Firepower 2' … It's hard to say anything these days without people getting… If I say it's like a continuation of 'Firepower' , people think it's 'Firepower 2' . It's got its own character, it's got its own legs, and we're looking forward to releasing it on to the world when it's done."

In February, Halford was asked by Remy Maxwell of Audacy Check In if he agreed with Faulkner 's recent comment that the band's upcoming album will be more musically "progressive" than "Firepower" . He responded: "Yeah, the metal is there. But here's the thing: we've tried our best not to replicate anything that we've done. From 'Rocka Rolla' all the way through to 'Firepower' , each record has had a distinctive character. And it's tough because fans go, 'We want another 'Painkiller' ,' 'We want another 'British Steel' .' And [it's, like], 'Dude, we've already done that.'

"Fans know that we're a band that is always full of adventure and trying new stuff," he continued. "And so, yeah, this has got probably some more progressive elements that we've never really delved into before. And that's exciting, because, again, it gives us and our fans another opportunity to see a different side of PRIEST . But it's still metal. There's just more of it. There are more notes than there were before."

That same month, Faulkner told Canada's The Metal Voice about the overall sound of the new PRIEST music: "Whenever you start a record, you never know how it's gonna turn out. So you might start with an idea of what it's gonna be, and as it kind of rolls on, it comes out something different. So you don't quite know. And also it's really hard to sum up your own music, I find, without sounding really pretentious. But I think this one — it's not 'Firepower 2' , I don't think. It's its own thing, it's its own animal. If anything, I would say it's a bit more progressive in places, and in places it's got a bit more of that 'Killing Machine' swagger."

Faulkner added: "I know everyone says, 'Oh, is it the next 'Painkiller' ?' or 'Is it the next…?' whatever… I don't know if they'd ever done it, but I know we've never done it when I've been in the band; we've never tried to recreate an album. It's always we try to create an album that stands on its own legs. So I think it's definitely a little bit more progressive than 'Firepower' and, as I said, in places it's got a little bit of that 'Killing Machine' angry swagger attitude going on. But again, as I said, we're waiting to see what it turns out like, 'cause it could turn out completely different."

JUDAS PRIEST will receive the Musical Excellence Award at this year's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame , which will honor Eminem , Dolly Parton , DURAN DURAN , Lionel Richie , Pat Benatar , EURYTHMICS and Carly Simon in the Performers category.

The induction ceremony will be held on November 5, 2022 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. It will air at a later date on HBO and stream on HBO Max . There will also be a radio simulcast on SiriusXM 's Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Radio channel 310.

According to the Hall Of Fame , the JUDAS PRIEST members that will get inducted include current members Halford , Hill , Tipton and Scott Travis (drums),along with former members Downing , Les Binks (drums) and late drummer Dave Holland .

Judas Priest Mark 50th Anniversary, Hall of Fame Induction With North American Tour

  • By Tomás Mier

Fifty years of Judas Priest means 50 years of heavy metal. On Tuesday, the Rob Halford-fronted metal band announced that they will be going on a 29-date tour across North America in celebration of their half-century as a group.

“Defending the heavy metal faith for 50 years, the Priest is back,” Halford said in a statement. “Time to don the leather and studs and roll out the Priest Machine,” added guitarist Glenn Tipton.

The new tour comes several months after they released  Reflections: 50 Heavy Metal Years of Music  featuring some classics and live renditions of songs such as “Running Wild,” “Sinner,” and “Victim of Changes.” The group will also perform songs from their 2018 album, Firepower , on the tour after being off the road due to Covid.

“After the horrific last few years of restrictions we’ve all had to endure, what better place to break free, than the land of the free,” said bassist Ian Hill.

The tour — supported by Queensryche — will also help celebrate the group’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , after being on the ballot three times in the past.

“Third time’s the charm,” Halford told Rolling Stone about their induction. “We left the launchpad and now we’re headed to the hallowed halls. It’s a great day for Judas Priest and a great day for heavy metal.”

“It’s a validation, more than anything else, of the importance and the relevance of Judas Priest. For 50 years we’ve been doing this. To have this opportunity as we continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary is just a beautiful thing. It couldn’t have happened at a better time,” he added. “It’s definitely a validation of Priest and the importance of heavy metal music. I’ve been championing the need for more heavy metal in the Hall of Fame.”

Eminem, Carly Simon, Duran Duran, Dolly Parton, Pat Benatar, Lionel Richie, and Eurythmics are among those who will also enter the Hall of Fame this year.

JUDAS PRIEST Announces Fall 2022 U.S. Tour With QUEENSRŸCHE

judas priest tour 2022 lineup

One of heavy metal’s all-time greats, Judas Priest , will get the opportunity to celebrate their 50th anniversary again this year with the launch of a new North American Fall tour. The 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour will also feature Queensryche as openers and is being fueled by the highest charting album of Priest ’s career, “Firepower,” which peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200.

Additionally in 2022, Priest band members Rob Halford , Glenn Tipton , Ian Hill and Scott Travis will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

“Defending the heavy metal faith for fifty years, the Priest is back!” – Rob Halford   “Time to don the leather and studs and roll out the Priest Machine – celebrating our 50 Heavy Metal Years!!” – Glenn Tipton   “After the horrific last few years of restrictions we’ve all had to endure, what better place to break free, than the land of the free – the USA!” – Ian Hill   Judas Priest originally formed in 1970 in Birmingham, England (an area that many feel birthed heavy metal). The original nucleus of musicians would go on to change the face of heavy metal. Throughout the 70’s Priest were responsible for helping trail blaze metal with such classic offerings as “Sad Wings of Destiny” (1976) “Sin After Sin” (1977) and “Hell Bent for Leather ” (1978) as well as one of the genre’s top live recordings “Unleashed in the East” (1979) among others.   It was during the 80’s that Priest conquered the world, becoming a global arena headliner on the strength of such all-time classics as “British Steel” (1980) and “Screaming for Vengeance” (1982), as well as being one of the first metal bands to be embraced by the then-burgeoning MTV, plus performing at some of the decades biggest concerts (1980’s Monsters of Rock , 1983’s US Festival , and 1985’s Live Aid ) and being the first to exclusively wear leather and studs – a look that began during this era and would eventually be embraced by metal heads throughout the world. Priest ’s success continued throughout the 90’s and beyond with the addition of drummer Scott Travis , as evidenced by such additional stellar offerings as “Painkiller” (1990) “Angel of Retribution” (2005) and “A Touch of Evil: Live” (2009) the latter of which saw Priest win a Grammy Award for a killer rendition of the classic “Dissident Aggressor” .

Judas Priest announce extensive run of 50 Heavy Metal Years tour dates

Time to don the leather and studs: Judas Priest will celebrate their 50th anniversary once more with a new US tour

Judas Priest band shot

Metal legends Judas Priest have announced another set of North American dates on their ongoing 50 Heavy Metal Years tour. The new run of dates will begin in Wallingford, CT on October 13, and climax on November 29 in Houston, TX. Support comes from Queensryche .

The anniversary tour was originally scheduled for 2020 – althoughJudas Priest formed in 1969 – but was postponed like every other tour. The band then cancelled 25 dates of their 2021 tour after guitarist Richie Faulkner suffered a ruptured aorta during a performance at the Louder Than Life festival in Kentucky.

The tour finally got up to speed earlier this year, but not before touring guitarist Andy Sneap had been dropped from the band line-up before being swiftly reinstated after fan uproar.

“Defending the heavy metal faith for fifty years," says Rob Halford, clearly excited at the prospect of another tour. "The Priest is back!”   Meanwhile, guitarist Glenn Tipton advises that it's “Time to don the leather and studs and roll out the Priest Machine - celebrating our 50 Heavy Metal Years!", while bassist Ian Hill says, “After the horrific last few years of restrictions we’ve all had to endure, what better place to break free, than the land of the free - the USA!"

Judas Priest are currently on tour in mainland Europe, and will next tour The UK in 2023 as support to Ozzy Osbourne on his much-delayed No More Tours 2 tour .

Tickets to the North American shows will be available from Ticketmaster . Full dates below.

Judas Priest Resume 50th Anniversary Tour – Videos, Set List

Judas Priest returned to action on their 50 Heavy Metal Years tour last night, after guitarist Richie Faulkner ’s health alert forced them off the road last September.

He suffered an aortic aneurysm while on stage at Louder than Life, leading to emergency surgery which was soon declared a complete success. “From what I’ve been told by my surgeon, people with this don’t usually make it to the hospital alive,” he said at the time. Referring to the “mechanical components” fitted in his chest, he declared: “I’m literally made of metal now.”

As the video clips below show, he was in fine form at the Peoria Civic Center Theatre in Peoria, IL. So too was producer and life guitarist Andy Sneap, who’d been briefly dropped from the lineup until a fan backlash persuaded the band to reinstate him . The 18-song set list below was broadly the same as the one they’d been presenting at earlier shows – hardly a surprise given it was designed to celebrate the band’s five decades of musical output.

Frontman Rob Halford recently confirmed that work was continuing on their next album, saying : “We've tried our best not to replicate anything that we've done. From Rocka Rolla all the way through to Firepower , each record has had a distinctive character. And it’s tough because fans go, ‘We want another Painkiller ; we want another British Steel .’ ‘Dude, we've already done that!’ He added: “[T]his has got probably some more progressive elements that we've never really delved into before. And that's exciting… it gives us and our fans another opportunity to see a different side of Priest. But it's still metal. There's just more of it. There are more notes than there were before!”

Judas Priest Announce Fall 2022 U.S. Tour with Queensryche

Metal greats Judas Priest and Queensryche will embark on a lengthy U.S. tour this fall

Judas Priest will continue their “50 Heavy Metal Years” tour this fall with a fresh round of 2022 U.S. dates with support from Queensrÿche. The metal greats will set off on the tour starting Oct. 13 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and remain on the road through a Nov. 29 show in Houston. Tickets for the newly announced gigs go on sale to the general public Friday (June 24) via Ticketmaster .

“Defending the heavy metal faith for fifty years, the Priest is back!” vocalist Rob Halford said in a statement. Bass player Ian Hill, “After the horrific last few years of restrictions we’ve all had to endure, what better place to break free, than the land of the free — the USA!”

Judas Priest is keeping plenty busy this year. The group recently closed out a string of tour dates that marked the return of guitarist Richie Faulkner, who had suffered a ruptured aorta while performing on stage during Louder than Life Festival in 2021. In addition, the group will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2022 when they receive the Musical Excellence Award. Former Priest guitarist K.K. Downing will reportedly be at the ceremony, despite his split with the group in 2011.

Judas Priest Announce Rescheduled ’50 Heavy Metal Years’ 2022 Tour Dates With Queensryche

Judas Priest have announced a rescheduled North American leg of their ongoing '50 Heavy Metal Years' tour with makeup dates set for 2022 with support coming from prog metal icons Queensryche .

The celebratory trek was originally set for 2020, but was postponed due to the global pandemic and, shortly after Priest returned to the road earlier this year, guitarist Richie Faulkner suffered a torn aorta onstage at the Louder Than Life festival in Kentucky. He somehow managed to shred all of the solos in "Painkiller" flawlessly and was taken directly to a nearby hospital after the show's conclusion and underwent emergency open heart surgery that lasted more than 10 hours.

Judas Priest, at that time, announced that all North American tour dates had been postponed and now the rest of the originally scheduled shows will move forward next year on a run that stretches from March 7 through April 11.

See all the dates below and, for tickets, visit Judas Priest's website .

Thankfully, Faulkner is recovering well and, in his most recent update , which came seven weeks to the day after the onstage incident, he informed fans he has been playing guitar every day while working toward getting back to full health.

"I'm walking well and moving freely, I'm pretty active and I'm starting cardiac therapy very soon. I'm playing guitar everyday and with the love and support of my family, the continued support from you guys and the inspiration that i get from the guitar, I'll be back onstage in no time! My surgeons are very pleased with my progress and have all reserved front row tickets for the next Priest show," he wrote, in part.

Judas Priest to Perform as Four-Piece, Dropping Andy Sneap from Their Touring Lineup

Sneap will stay on in a producer role but says it is "incredibly disappointing" to no longer be in the live band

Judas Priest to Perform as Four-Piece, Dropping Andy Sneap from Their Touring Lineup

Judas Priest will play their upcoming tour as a four-piece after dropping guitarist and producer Andy Sneap from their live lineup.

The legendary metal act’s rescheduled 2022 North American tour kicks off March 4th in Peoria, Illinois, with tickets available via Ticketmaster . Initially, a statement from the band suggested that the split was amicable, with Sneap leaving to concentrate on production — including work on Judas Priest’s next album.

Judas Priest stated, “Hello maniacs! We are chomping at the British Steel bit to return to world touring… celebrating 50 years of Judas Priest as an an even more powerful, relentless four piece heavy metal band – with Glenn [Tipton] coming out on stage with us here and there as before. Big thanks to Andy for all you’ve done and continuing to be in the production team for our new album… See you all soon headbangers!”

Sneap then issued a statement (via Blabbermouth ) clarifying that the decision was not necessarily mutual:

“Rob [Halford] called me last Monday and said they wanted to move on as a four-piece, which I find incredibly disappointing after this amount of time but I respect his decision as they obviously have a vision how they want this to play out. This always was a temporary situation, and like I’ve said before, I’ll always help the band any way I can, and that applies going forward also. I’ve been a huge fan of the band since the early ’80s and it was mind-blowing to play onstage with the guys and quite frankly terrifying in the beginning at such short notice. We are moving forward with the new album next month and look forward to making a killer follow-up to Firepower. ”

Sneap produced Firepower and initially joined Judas Priest to fill in for guitarist Glenn Tipton, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018 and now only performs with the band onstage on rare occasions. In Tipton’s stead, Sneap — who cut his teeth as a founding member of British thrash band Sabbat — performed admirably alongside fellow axeman Richie Faulkner.

Judas Priest Unveil Rescheduled 2022 North American Tour Dates

The news is especially surprising for a couple of reasons: One being that Priest are known for their twin-guitar attack, with Tipton and former member K.K. Downing providing an iconic one-two punch for decades prior to Faulkner replacing Downing. The other being that Faulkner recently underwent emergency life-saving heart surgery after his aorta ruptured onstage during the band’s gig at the Louder Than Life festival in September. Priest must feel fully confident in his recovery to make him the lone guitarist in their touring lineup.

Faulkner’s health ordeal forced the band to postpone the remainder of their fall US tour only a few shows in to the outing, with the spring jaunt serving as the new itinerary. Pick up tickets here .

Judas Priest are continuing their “50 Heavy Metal Years” tour, announcing Fall 2022 US dates with support from Queensrÿche .

The metal legends will kick off the 29-date outing on October 13th in Wallingford, Connecticut, and stay on the road through a November 29th date in Houston. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday (June 24th) via Ticketmaster , with an artist pre-sale beginning on Wednesday and an Internet pre-sale beginning on Thursday (using the code DAZZLE ).

“Defending the heavy metal faith for fifty years,” remarked frontman Rob Halford in a press release, “the Priest is back!” Added bassist Ian Hill: “After the horrific last few years of restrictions we’ve all had to endure, what better place to break free, than the land of the free — the USA!”

It’s been a big year for Judas Priest. The band wrapped up rescheduled tour dates earlier this year after the return of guitarist Richie Faulkner, who had suffered a ruptured aorta while performing on stage in 2021. To top it off, the band will finally be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2022 via the Musical Excellence Award.

“Glenn is all over this album. He’s playing on a lot of the songs, but those moments where he wasn’t able to, Richie is carrying that metal torch for him”: How Judas Priest made a blockbuster new album in the face of adversity – and became unstoppable

Judas Priest’s Richie Faulkner, Rob Halford and Glenn Tipton open up on their guitar tag-team approach on Invincible Shield, a bold new album that lashes out at human frailty

Richie Faulkner, Rob Halford and Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest perform onstage the 37th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

As they prepare for the release of their 19th album, Invincible Shield , Judas Priest are still pondering the randomness of life and the frailty of the human condition.

Since the release of their 2018’s blowtorch-to-the-face record, Firepower , most of the guys in the band have been anything but invincible. Vocalist Rob Halford has battled and seems to have beaten prostate cancer; guitarist Glenn Tipton continues to struggle with a debilitating case of Parkinson’s disease, which six years ago ended his ability to tour.

And lead guitarist Richie Faulkner vividly remembers suffering an aortic aneurysm on September 26, 2021, while Priest were playing the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky.

“It’s crazy to think I easily could have died then and there,” says Faulkner, who assumed pole position for the writing and recording of Invincible Shield and worked closely with Tipton to voice guitar ideas the guitar hero can no longer play. “If the hospital wasn’t so close to the venue and they didn’t have one of the leading heart surgery teams in the country, I definitely wouldn’t have made it.”

Faulkner’s survival and rapid recovery has been nothing short of miraculous, even with the intensive follow-up procedures he underwent and the continued precautions he has to undertake.

“Overall, my chest and everything is all fine,” Faulkner says. “I had to go back in again in 2022 to have another open-heart procedure, but that’s all fine and cleared up.

“One of the only side effects now is I have to play a bit more regularly. I’m not a young man anymore. I can’t leave the guitar for two weeks and then come back and be right up to speed. I have to stay on top of my playing, and some of that is a result of what happened.

“But as far as heart damage and the aorta stuff around it, it’s all fixed. And everything is kept at bay with medication. So, you never know what’s around the corner, but hopefully I’m okay now.”

Judas Priest

From the opening riff of the fast, urgent album opener Panic Attack to the pounding, riff-saturated Giants in the Sky , a reference to deceased metal pioneers Ronnie James Dio and Lemmy Kilmister, Invincible Shield is a burst of energy, perseverance and defiance.

Reminiscent of Judas Priest’s classic ’80s albums Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith , but with the contemporary production of Firepower , the new album is all volume, aggression and sonic acrobatics, ranging from the triumphant melodies of Crown of Horns to the barreling, full-blown and rhythmically complex The Serpent and the King .

While Invincible Shield is a powerful celebration of pure metal, it’s also a relentless, brazen middle finger to mortality and severe illness.

These songs are on fire. They’re absolutely blazing because no matter what we’re up against, the Priest will never curl up into a ball Rob Halford

“Sometimes, mortality brings out the best in people,” says Halford, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer during the pandemic, underwent a prostatectomy and radiation therapy and has been cancer-free for two years.

“That kind of struggle with mortality is all over this record because the instinct to survive is something you channel into yourself as a person, and the things you’ve been through and witnessed come across in your music.

“These songs are on fire. They’re absolutely blazing because no matter what we’re up against, the Priest will never curl up into a ball. We’re kicking and screaming, horns up and legs out – metal boots stomping all over the place.”

During separate revealing Zoom interviews with Faulkner and Halford, and an email exchange with Tipton, the songwriting trio of Judas Priest addressed the obstacles they faced forging Invincible Shield , the way they had to modify their creative process, how their undying support for one another has brought them closer, and Faulkner’s constant battle to evolve as a player and composer and his unwillingness to settle for anything short of topping his last great achievement.

Where do you see Invincible Shield in relation to the rest of the band’s catalog?

Richie Faulkner: “People keep comparing this to other things we’ve done, and I understand their desire to do that, but I think Invincible Shield is very much Priest today. That classic sound is ingrained in everyone, including me, but we always try to do something a little bit different than what we’ve done before. And that doesn’t come from some need to do something different; it comes naturally.

“I think creative people naturally try to do things that are new and inspiring to them. As a musician, you have to scratch that creative itch and do stuff that satisfies you.”

This is probably one of the most definitive Priest metal albums we’ve done Rob Halford

Rob Halford: “This is probably one of the most definitive Priest metal albums we’ve done. I think it’s a reflection of where we’re at now, and a continuation from where we were with Firepower while making references to other places in Priest’s history.”

Richie, how do you see Invincible Shield as a development of your contributions to the band?

Faulkner: “As a guitar player, I’m always thinking of how I can make what I’m doing better than what I did the last time. I focus a lot on how I can make what I wrote more appropriate and more valuable as a musical statement. So maybe I’ll construct the solos before recording them. That’s something different for me.”

Is that what you did for Invincible Shield ?

Faulkner: “I constructed a few of my leads early and brought them into the studio. That gave me a foundation to work from. I still did about 70 percent of my solos in the studio, but what I did was run through one that’s improvised, and then run through another I wrote. After a couple takes, there are motifs that become prominent, and that’s what I build the whole solo around.”

Glenn Tipton performs live

You’ve established yourself as the lead guitarist for Judas Priest without altering the band’s core sound.

Faulkner: “After 13 years in Priest playing both Glenn’s and K.K. [Downing, former Priest guitarist]’s stuff, everything they’ve done has become a part of my style as well. On a very intimate level, I’m playing the Painkiller solo every night, so that’s become a part of my vocabulary. So, I’m doing things like sweep picking and some tapping , which is new for me.”

Did you want to write differently than you have in the past?

I always try to look forward and be optimistic – that's how I go about my guitar playing Glenn Tipton

Faulkner: “I’ve always been attracted to slightly progressive elements, and I think we’re all into that, so I introduced some parts that were a bit unconventional in that sense this time. And if they didn’t tick the right boxes, we left them on the shelf and found something else that worked better.

”But a lot of those parts stayed in, which was exciting. Maybe they were a little more progressive, maybe they weren’t. The only rule was that it had to sound like Judas Priest, and that left a lot of room to explore.”

Did you feel more comfortable writing with the guys on Invincible Shield than you did on Firepower ?

Faulkner: “It was just a little different. I went in thinking, ‘Okay, you’ve got a bit of history with the band now. You co-wrote two records with them. How can you make this one better?’ I know better is a nebulous term, but for me, it’s got to be better. I’m representing one of the biggest and most influential heavy metal bands in the world, and the bar is higher. But that’s nothing new.

“What’s different, obviously, is Glenn’s situation is different now than it was for the first two albums I did with Priest. I knew I was going to have to take on more of the guitar load.”

Did you work more with Rob than you did before?

Faulkner: “We did a lot together. Rob and I would put ideas together in the studio. Rob would usually come in with a vocal idea and I’d find something that worked with it on guitar.

“At first, you might not know what you’ve got, but a little way into the creative process, the album takes on its own character. And once you recognize that character, you start to embellish it. At the end, hopefully you’ve got this monster that you can unleash on the world. It’s exciting. It’s scary, though.”

What was scary about making Invincible Shield ?

The only rule was that it had to sound like Judas Priest, and that left a lot of room to explore Richie Faulkner

Faulkner: “ Firepower was a really well-received record. It was a big success. Now, how do you follow that? They’ve done it before, but this was my first rodeo with that kind of situation – following up something that’s been really well received. That was a challenge, but it’s a good challenge to have because you have to up the bar on yourself.”

Can’t you make yourself crazy constantly trying to better yourself?

Faulkner: “Challenges are what make albums unique, and there’s always a unique challenge for every album. When I was younger, maybe it was financial constraints. You didn’t have enough time in the studio, or the studio wasn’t big enough, or didn’t work the way you wanted it to. There are always challenges you have to work around.

“With Angel of Retribution , I was getting my studio bearings. And then we couldn’t record during a pandemic. And then we had a tour, so we had to record during the gaps in the tour. That was another challenge. But the challenges always happen right up until the album is complete and you’re satisfied. Before that, you’re always thinking it could be better or it’s not quite right, so you work on it to embellish it or make it more interesting.”

Richie Faulkner

Can you think of a particular challenge you faced with a song on Invincible Shield ?

Faulkner: “The original version of Panic Attack had another slower part before the guitar solo . It was too long. It didn’t feel right, so we took it out. When it’s right, you know it’s right, but sometimes it’s hard to tell why it’s not right. One thing I always think about is if it’s not grooving, it’s not right. When it’s vibing, that’s when you know you’ve finally gotten it.”

Glenn, you’ve been upfront about how you can’t play the way you used to because of Parkinson’s disease, which must be terribly frustrating. Did you change the way you worked as a band to accommodate your condition?

Glenn Tipton: “No, the three of us all worked together the same as normal. However, it is hard for me to give 100 percent now due to my Parkinson’s so Richie took more of the load. But I always try to look forward and ahead and be optimistic – that’s how I go about my guitar playing.”

When we were in the room together, and when Glenn had an idea, but he couldn’t play it, he would communicate the idea to me and tell me what to do. That might trigger a new idea from me Richie Faulkner

Faulkner: “Writing-wise, when we were in the room together, and when Glenn had an idea, but he couldn’t play it, he would communicate the idea to me and tell me what to do. That might trigger a new idea from me, so there was a lot of back and forth. There were other ideas he had that he could play, and he played those.”

Tipton: “I have to take each day as it comes. Some days I feel strong, so I have a good day and I can play more. And others I feel weak so I can’t really play much.”

Halford: “Yes, but Glenn – his input, his validity, the reference points that he makes with his hands – are all over this album. So, as far as what this man stands for in the life of Judas Priest, the relationship hasn’t changed a bit. The only thing that’s changed is the way Parkinson’s has robbed him of his articulation on the guitar.

“So, he has very, very carefully passed over certain feelings toward the guitar passages to Richie. You’re hearing guitars that make you think of Glenn because that’s the way Glenn would perform. But it’s Richie playing a lot of it. So Glenn is all over this album. He’s playing on a lot of the songs, but those moments where he wasn’t able to, Richie is picking up and carrying that metal torch for Glenn.”

Glenn, do you sit or hold the guitar differently when you play, or play a lighter guitar?

Tipton: “No, I do everything the same and I still use my same guitars – the Hamer Phantom Signature Model and my Hamer Signature GTX. But I have to work very hard to get the sounds I want these days. I did come up with some guitar parts on my own, but when Richie was involved, he took the ideas I put forward and improved on them.”

Richie, when you came in with a song, did Glenn work with you on it or did you just record what you wrote?

Faulkner: “Glenn knows exactly how to make something sound like Priest. I might come in with an almost complete song, and Glenn would suggest a little turnaround that was totally out of my school of thinking, and it made the song better. And then there are a couple of songs on the record, Sons of Thunder and Escape From Reality , and those were primarily Glenn’s ideas, and he had more to do with them.

“Obviously, it was a challenge to make everything work, but I think we knew how to handle it and we all worked together in a way that was really rewarding.”

Halford: “What’s interesting about Richie is the way I’ve watched him transform from the guitar player that he was when he first became the lead guitarist for Judas Priest for Redeemer of Souls , to the creative and empathetic musician he is today.

“Glenn mentored Richie, and Richie loves Glenn so much that the understanding of everything Glenn has done with Priest has become a part of who Richie is. And that understanding has been very profound.

“Over the past 10 or so years, Richie has matured and blossomed as a guitarist so he has his own identity – his own distinctive way of playing – and at the same time, he’s been able to move to another place to pick up for another guitar player.

“There are very few people that can do that and do it so well and with such love and such care and understanding, so that you get an extraordinary performance whether Richie is playing something he wrote or playing something for Glenn.”

Richie, did you play all the leads on the album?

Faulkner: “Not all of them. Glenn could manage Sons of Thunder, Vicious Circle and a couple others. But if he couldn’t play something, I took the helm.”

Did you try to play those leads in Glenn’s style?

Faulkner: “As a player, I’m so heavily influenced by Glenn anyway, but I don’t play as much legato as him. I come from the Zakk Wylde school of picking, and Zakk picks every note. I can’t do that, but I pick most of the notes. There’s a little bit of legato in my style, but there was definitely more legato going on before.

“But having said that, I did kind of take on that role of playing a lot of Glenn’s parts. If he couldn’t do it, I’d take on that role. There’s stuff I played on that’s unmistakably Tipton, both in the composition and guitar technique. But that’s why he’s such a vital and important part of Priest.”

What guitar sound were you shooting for on Invincible Shield ? It sounds very Priest, but as you said, there’s something about the sound that makes it very relevant today.

Faulkner: “Well, it’s a good old Marshall JCM800 with a Tube Screamer-type pedal in the front. It’s a tried and tested approach when it comes to the way we EQ my sound. I’m quite a mid-heavy player, anyway. I think it gives the guitar extra presence and character.

“But after I recorded everything with my setup, I sent the tracks to producer Andy Sneap, and he re-amped them in his studio because I’ve got no time for microphone placement, and Andy is a real authority on that. So I sent him the DI tracks and he put them through cabinets and amplifiers that he’s got. He was using 800s and plexis to find that good, old Priest sound.

“There aren’t many effects there, but there’s a bit of reverb and delay that was done post-production. But at the heart of it, it’s that Marshall sound through a Gibson Explorer and one of my Flying Vs .”

An Ibanez Tube Screamer is a go-to for blues and other kinds of rock, but when you play it through a tube amp it tightens up the low-end and provides extra texture.

Faulkner: “You ramp up the distortion on the JCM800 and that’s the main sound. The Tube Screamer wasn’t an Ibanez – it was a clone of a clone, a [Wampler] Tumnus [overdrive] that I have in front of my amps on stage.”

Would Invincible Shield be a good swan song for Judas Priest, or will there be another album?

Faulkner: “Who knows? If this one’s well received and there are enough ideas creatively to do another one, then it’s possible. We’ll have to wait and see, really. At this moment, I’m out of ideas. I’ve got nothing left. That always happens with me, and then I start coming up with things. But where are these ideas going to come from? I don’t know.

“But somehow, somewhere along the line, you start building up ideas and songs. They come from somewhere. After Firepower I was out of ideas and then we somehow created Invincible Shield . We’ll see what the future holds.”

It’s absolutely glorious that we’re still out there… If that isn’t the embodiment of metal never dying and metal never surrendering, then I don’t know what is Rob Halford

Halford: “I think Richie is an endless well of guitar ideas, and Glenn has vaults of riffs we’ve never used, and a good riff will last forever. It’s all about perspective and presentation. When you’ve got all that sorted out, why stop? There’s a fire that’s really burning right now and it has been even before Invincible Shield left the launch pad. Right now, we’re focused on touring for the album, but when we finish touring, what are we going to do?

“Well, Priest has always maintained its relevance and importance in metal by showing you what we can do next. And the other thing is, I don’t like 19. It’s an odd number. I’m an ‘even number’ kind of guy. I like 20.

“But the bottom line is it’s absolutely glorious that we’re still out there. Glenn’s still thriving as a musician, and so is Richie after what he went through with his heart condition. I’m thriving after what I went through with my cancer condition. If that isn’t the embodiment of metal never dying and metal never surrendering, then I don’t know what is.

“There’s this importance in our lives as musicians to never give up and never give in, to also keep pushing ahead and going toward the metal torch on the horizon. That’s what drives us.”

Judas Priest rocks Syracuse amphitheater; concert cut short by storm (setlist, photos)

J udas Priest performed at the Syracuse amphitheater for the first time Wednesday night, but the concert was cut short by a thunderstorm in the area.

The Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview cautioned concertgoers earlier in the evening that severe weather in the forecast would delay the scheduled door opening time. Gates opened shortly after 6 p.m. and the show went on as scheduled at 7:30 p.m. with opening act Sabaton.

Judas Priest performed hits “Painkiller,” “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’” and the weather-appropriate “Lightning Strike,” plus new songs like “Panic Attack,” “Crown of Horns” and “Invincible Shield.” According to setlist.fm, the legendary heavy metal band played the same set as it did a day earlier at the MVP Arena in Albany.

However, Judas Priest’s encore at the Empower FCU Amphitheater was cut short by two songs due to storms. The group played “Electric Eye,” but did not get to perform its two planned closing songs, “Hell Bent for Leather” and “Living After Midnight.”

Photos posted by fans at the concert show screens at the venue displayed a severe weather alert: “We are evacuating the venue. Calmly proceed to the nearest exit and seek shelter in your vehicles.”

“Even with it being cut short, it was a great show!” one fan wrote on Facebook .

“Absolutely incredible show. Rob Halford can still hit those high notes. Awesome!!!” another said.

Judas Priest, an English heavy metal band led by singer Rob Halford, has been performing for more than 50 years. The group was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 and won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010.
