How to get to Tumpak Sewu waterfall

Tumpak Sewu waterfall is located in the lumajang regency, that’s in east java, Indonesia.

The nearest airport is within the town of Malang (MLG), which has direct flights from Bali (DPS), or you can reach Malang without problems by way of teaching from Yogyakarta, that’s what we did. Some other choice is to visit Tumpak Sewu on a long day ride from Surabaya (sub), which has a global airport. You may shop for flights to Malang or Surabaya at Skyscanner.

Riding time to the waterfall from Malang is about 2 hours, and from Surabaya, it’s toward four hours. I wouldn’t endorse using a scooter for this trip until you’re skilled, mainly because it includes long distances and driving in the dark.

WHERE IS TUMPAK SEWU WATERFALL?

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is located at the base of  Lumajang, East Java. It’s approximately a 2-hour drive from Malang City or a 7-hour drive from Surabaya to reach Lumajang.

Tumpak Sewu is a highly-visited tourist destination, primarily on the weekends. Infrastructure built around and inside the main  box canyon  has allowed for easier access to the area, although the trip to enter or exit is still physically demanding and may take around an hour to complete

TUMPAK SEWU WATERFALL VIEWPOINT

The first thing you want to do on your Tumpak Sewu Waterfall adventure from Lumajang is to wake up early. Be at the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall viewpoint for sunrise. Although the sun won’t be on the waterfall, this is actually what you want. The fog is beautiful in the morning and creates a mystical atmosphere. In the background, Semeru Volcano will be giving you a beautiful backdrop, while Tumpak Sewu Waterfall slowly comes into focus as the light increases.

HIKING DOWN TO TUMPAK SEWU WATERFALL

Get down to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall on ground level before the sun rises over the waterfall. The trail is right next to the viewpoint where you were for sunrise. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk

down into the canyon and then about another 5 minutes to walk through the canyon to the waterfall.

The trail down is pretty sketchy with bamboo ladders and sections where you are walking through small streams but it is nothing too crazy. Just be prepared and definitely wear shoes, not flip-flops.

Once you reach the canyon you start to get an idea of the scale of the walls. You are an ant within the gorge and you know you are about to witness something incredible. After turning the final corner you will never forget the moment you enter the cauldron at the foot of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. It is pure magic with more than thirty different waterfalls plummeting down into the cauldron into tiny pools below.

BROMO IJEN TUMPAK SEWU TOUR PACKAGE

Mount bromo tumpak sewu tour |  day 01: arrival / pick up from surabaya.

The first day of the tour is just a meeting and pick-up day for anyone who joins the tour. There will be a meeting point informed by the tour administrator for everyone to go to on the first day. At the meeting point, there may be some minutes of wait for the rest of the tourists to arrive before departing to the area of Mount Bromo. It takes about 3 to 4 hours of driving to reach the accommodation spot close to Mount Bromo . Around the area is the beautiful view of the Tengger Mountains to admire and capture while resting.

Day 02: Bromo Volcano

The second day is the time to get serious about enjoying the natural beauty of  Mount Bromo . Sunrise is amidst the attractions of the day so the tour will start early at 3 AM. A Jeep ride for about 1 hour to the sunrise view of Mount Penanjakan is a ride to get excited too. As long as the weather is nice and the sky is clear there will always be a golden sunrise to watch and capture. The background of the view includes the tip of Mount Batok, Mount Bromo, and Mount Semeru just above the beautiful sea of clouds.

The Sunrise view ends at 6.30 AM before moving on to the next attraction on the second day of the 3-day Mount Bromo Tumpak Sewu waterfall tour. The next thing to witness is the living volcano crater of Mount Bromo. It takes serious endurance to walk the 250 steps in an uphill direction. The destination is the crater’s ridge at the top to view Bromo’s crater below. Both the view and the sound are crazy out there. It ends at 10 AM to eventually travel to an area close to the Tumpak Sewu waterfall called Pronojiwo village.

Day 03 : Tumpak Sewu Waterfall

The end of the second day is just a good quality of rest at the provided accommodation in the village. It is needed since the third day will be an exploration day. The last day of the tour starts at 6.30 AM after breakfast. Preparation is needed to embark on a journey to witness the beauty of the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. It starts by trekking the beautiful tropical landscape of Mount Semeru another volcano in the area. It takes about 10 minutes of trekking to reach the point where the silky-looking waterfall is visible from above.

The trekking continues passing through rivers, steep hills, and down paths for about 30 minutes before reaching the legendary Tumpak Sewu waterfall. Enjoying the ambiance around the waterfall is incomparable. The area is so natural with the freshness of water from the waterfall. All things there must be done eventually to continue the journey to a cave called Goa Tetes close by. Leaving the cave will end the last day of the tour to have lunch at the homestay and depart for a return to Surabaya . • Travel 3 hours to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
• Explore Tumpak Sewu Waterfall for 2–3 hours.
• Travel 4–5 hours to Bromo area.
• Check into Bromo Terrace Hotel & Resto . You will stay here for 1 night. *We will use another hotel of similar standard if this hotel is unavailable.
• Pick up from the hotel at  2am .
• Travel 1 hour via a private 4WD jeep to  Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
• Have a light meal at a nearby shop before hiking.
• Hike for 10–15 minutes to reach the  sunrise viewpoint .
• Watch the spectacular sunrise (There are many viewpoints nearby. Our guide will bring you to the viewpoint that is less crowded – all have similar views).
• Return to the 4WD jeep after sunrise and travel 30 minutes to the  Sea of Sand  for photo taking .
• Travel 30 minutes to another part of the  Sea of Sand .
• Walk 30–45 minutes or ride on a horse (optional) to reach the foot of Bromo Crater . 
• Climb 250 flight of stairs for 10–15 minutes to reach the  rim of Bromo Crater.
• Return to your jeep at around 8–9am.
• Return back to the hotel, have breakfast and check out latest by 12pm.
• Travel 6–7 hours to  Banyuwangi (Ijen area) .
• Check into  El Hotel Banyuwangi  by  7pm . You will stay here for 2 nights. *We will use another hotel of similar standard if this hotel is unavailable.

* Milky Way Tour : If you choose this option (+SGD 30/pax), we will pick you up at 10 p m on Day 2 instead of 2am on Day 3. You will take a jeep down to the Sea of Sand and be brought to various photo-taking spots. * *Please inform your guide to bring you to another spot if you’re not satisfied, we’ll try our best to accommodate within the given time**. After that, you will stay at Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park until sunrise. Kindly note that the best time to see the milky way is during the NEW  moon period. The Milky Way Tour is highly dependent on weather conditions so the opportunity to see the Milky Way is  NOT  guaranteed. Additionally, it is  non-refundable.

This day is kept free and easy for you to recharge before climbing Mount Ijen. Below are some recommended activities (within 100km round trip):

• 1. De Djawatan Forest (Jawatan Benculuk)
• 2. Jagir Waterfall
• 3. Telemung Village
• 4. Chill at nearby beaches (e.g. Pantai Boom)

*Kindly note that if you would like to explore somewhere that is more than 100km (round trip), you will have to pay the driver for the additional fuel cost.

• Pick up and check out from the hotel at 12:30am . (We will pick you up at 2am if the blue fire is closed).
• Travel 2 hours to Paltuding area.
• Hike 2–3 hours or take the “trolley taxi” (optional) to the summit of Mount Ijen.
• Hike another 45 mins from the summit of Mt Ijen to the bottom of the Ijen lake, where you can see the famous  Blue Fire of Ijen . (Kindly note that sighting of the Blue Fire is dependent on weather and is  NOT guaranteed)
• Finish hiking at Mount Ijen by 8–9 am.
• Return back to the hotel, have breakfast and check out latest by 11am  (if you do not check out at 12:30am) .
• Travel 6–7 hours back to Surabaya.
• Drop you off at  your hotel in Surabaya / Surabaya Airport / Surabaya Train Station  by  5 pm .

Yes. We can customise the itinerary if you wish to add or remove any attractions in our pre-made itinerary. You can also inform our guide on the day of your tour if you decide not to visit a certain attraction.

A passport with a minimum of 6 months validity and travel insurance are a must. For other essentials, we will send you a packing list after you book your tour with us. 

The nearest international airport to Mount Bromo is Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. You can also start the tour from Bali or Yogyakarta.

A 2-way airport transfer service is included in all our tour packages. On Day 1, we will pick you up at Surabaya airport at your arrival time. If you are already in Surabaya, we will pick you up at your hotel at 9am instead. On the last day, we will drop you off at the airport.

Yes. You can request for the optional Milky Way tour. We’ll pick you up at 10pm from your lodge to Cemoro Lawang. You will then head to nearby peaks such as Mount Penanjakan, Mentigen Hill, Kingkong Hill or Seruni Point and the Sea of Sand where you can view the Milky Way. Avid photographers should bring suitable camera equipment as well. You would then continue with the standard itinerary to view the sunrise at Mount Bromo. This will cost an additional of SGD 50/pax, on top of your current tour package.

Entrance fees have various pricing for locals, foreigner and peak periods. It also gives you more flexibility as you can choose not to go to the attraction when you are on the tour and reduces the hassle for refund afterwards.

A round trip costs around 200,000 – 250,000 IDR (from the Sea of Sand to the rim of Bromo crater and back). Do note that the horse ride ends near the start of the stairs to the Mount Bromo crater. You will still have to climb about 250 flight of stairs up to the crater. The horse ride is entirely optional and you can choose to walk across the sea of sand, which most visitors do. Do negotiate with the horsemen to get a better deal.

Generally, our tours are all inclusive except for entrance fees, lunch and dinner during the tour.

For lunch and dinner expenses, you can budget it at around 70,000 IDR/meal (about SGD 6). However, this amount greatly depends on what you order and where you dine.

No. Mount Bromo is very dark and cold in the night. We do not allow our customers to hike solely on foot for safety concerns, unless you’ve reached the entrance of the sunrise viewpoint. 

Sunglasses and sunblock lotion are highly recommended – the sun rays can be harsh and at high altitude, it is easy to get sunburnt even though the surrounding temperature is cold. The terrain is very sandy – wearing a face mask is also recommended for protection (akin to walking in a desert). If you are visiting the waterfalls, please bring along wet gears such as swim suits with t-shirt and shorts, water booties/covered sandals, spectacle hooks, waterproof cover for your phone/camera which can be secured to your body, change of clothes and towel.

Our vehicle will first drop you at the parking lot of Madakaripura Waterfalls, where you will hop to a motorbike (Ojek) for a short 5 minutes ride to the entrance. Then, you need to do a trek of around 30 minutes (2km) to reach the waterfalls.

Swimming is no longer allowed at the waterfalls since 2018 but you will still get drenched. For footwear, we highly recommend covered rubber shoes or sandals.

This waterfall is located in Siji village, Jl. Raya Sidorenggo, Besukcukit, Sidomulyo, Pronojiwo, Lumajang Regency . Located approximately 52 kilometers from the city center of Lumajang, it can be reached within 1.5 hours of driving.

DETAIL ITINERARY Mount Bromo Ijen Tumpak Sewu Waterfall Tour 4 Days :

Day 1: Surabaya / Malang – Tourism Area of ​​Mount Bromo

• Our team will pick you up at airport, station or hotel and drive to Cemoro Lawang with duration of 3.5 hours driving. Arrive at hotel, chek in and rest.

Day 2: Bromo Tour Sunrise – Hotel in Lumajang

• Bromo Jeep Driver will Pick you up from hotel and continue towards Penanjakan 1 To see sunrise.
• After enjoy sunrise, continue towards Bromo Crater, You can do Soft Trekking to get the crater,or rent a horse.
• Then continue to prairie Savanna or Teletubbies Hill and Whispering Sand.
• Afterwards, back to hotel for breakfast and packing up to continue the tour to hotel in Lumajang city. Then check in hotel and free program.

Day 3 : Tumpak Sewu Waterfall – Hotel In Ijen

• In morning your driver will take you to Sidomulyo village in Pronojiwo district with duration one hour.
• Arrive at Tumpak Sewu parking area, walk down to waterfall point by descending cliff and crossing river for 30 minutes.
• Enjoy waterfall and the view there.

Day 4 : Paltuding – Ijen Crater – Drop Off
