Northeast India Man on stilts

Welcome to India's far East

Over the years, we have actively worked towards facilitating experiential travel which is Active, Interactive and Authentic in its truest form. Our tours of Northeast India include Cycling, Treks & Walks, Motorcycle & Overland, Multi-Activity, Family Adventures, Wildlife, Culture and Youth travel , all of which have local history, culture, interactions and the environment as their centerpiece.

The region at a glance

This little known corner of the Indian Subcontinent sharing international borders with Bhutan, Tibet, China, Myanmar and Bangladesh is connected to mainland India by a small sliver of land in the state of West Bengal popularly known as the Chickens neck. Consisting of Eight states this region is formed like a gigantic basin with the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys taking center stage. The northern border with Tibet and China is barricaded by the giant east Himalayan landmass, in the east the densely forested Patkai bum and Naga Patkai ranges bordering Burma take over running south all the way to Chaifil Tlang and Uiphum Tlang ranges in Mizoram (which further runs off east to the Chin hills and Arakan Yoma of Burma). In the south the Jaintia, Khasi and Garo Hills of Meghalaya bordering the rich plains of Bangladesh completes the formation. This region is incidentally the closest that the Himalayan mountain range gets to the coast. This geographical factor added to the fact that this region also receives some of the highest rainfall in the planet has resulted in the one of the greatest diversity in flora and fauna and hence also a diverse mix of people.

The Region

Perhaps the same reason that makes this region so rich in its natural diversity also makes it the most Ethnic, Linguistic and Cultural diverse region in the Indian sub-continent. For example, the state of Arunachal Pradesh itself has over 26 major tribes with over 100 sub-tribes and clans speaking some 50 odd dialects. These tribes provide a cultural bridge between India and south East Asia, China, Inner Asia and Burma by ethnic and linguistic angles, as most of these tribes migrated here from the North and the East over the centuries. These eight states in themselves constitute a single linguistic region with about 220 languages in three different language groups (Indo-Aryan, Sino-Tibetan and Austric). The earliest recorded history can be traced back only to the Ahom kings (16thAD) who ruled the Brahmaputra valley. Unlike the rest of India, majority here bear Mongoloid features.

The People

The Environment

This region has a predominantly humid sub-tropical climate with hot, humid summers, severe monsoons and fairly mild winters. Along with the west coast of India, it has some of the Indian sub-continent’s last remaining rain forests which support’s diverse flora and fauna and several endemic species. It has been pooled under the Eastern Himalayan and the Indo-Burmese Biodiversity hot spots. The close proximity of the High Himalayas to the coast has created a compact stretch of land with a multitude of vegetation. If we take a closer look, we see that the Ecology of the region varies from Alpine Tundra in the northern regions to Tropical and Sub tropica Rainforests in the lower areas. The central river valleys support Grasslands and large wetland areas. This variety in Eco-systems has created a heaven for bio-diversity. This region also boasts of the highest density of protected Wildlife Reserves in the country. Kaziranga, Manas, Nameri and Namdapha National Parks are some of the better known ones. It also has some of the highest densities of Tigers, Elephants and the Great one horned Rhinoceros, the only ape species found in India and the only Wildlife parks to have 5 felines’ species

An unconventional choice for a honeymoon but one of the best choices we have ever made! We were attracted to Arunachal Pradesh because of the adventure of visiting somewhere untouched, we were attracted by the wildlife tribes. Vasanth, Roheen and the team were the perfect hosts efficient at sorting the permits and when we arrived were immediately invited into their friends homes and hearing stories of tribal life this set the scene for the trip, it was like travelling with friends! With their network and expert knowledge of the area, we trusted their judgement and were delighted by the cycling routes (great mixture of terrain and scenery); the hikes arriving at Glow Lake was one of the most special moments, we have never found somewhere so remote, wild and beautiful before or since. We would highly highly recommend an adventure with North by North East for anyone looking for wilderness, beautiful scenery and immersion into a completely unique way of life with the energy and fun of cycling, hiking and most of travelling with a great, knowledgable and local team.

If you want to explore the far Northeast of India and getclose to the extremely diverse culture and nature, theseguys will take you there. Carrying the spirit of adventurein their heart, Roheen and his team offer a selection of highly attractive cycle and multi-sport escapes to the farthest points in Arunachal Pradesh – places where it’s very difficult for individually travelling tourists to reach. We did the Eastern Arunachal Pradesh Multi Activity Tour in one week (four days cycling, two days hiking) and were guided by Iho, one of the NbNE guides, who was an extremely supportive, attentive, and capable leader. We are relatively experienced travellers, used to go on our own, and were hesitant at first to follow an organised trip. But we realised that we would hardly have been able to get to the places we visited, let alone to cycle there (considering also the hassle with logistics). Parts of the tour were off motorable roads, crossing a river without a bridge and small villages in areas where it is hard to stock up on food, and we hiked through thick jungle where you have to go with a guide anyways. Accomodation was basic but having someone preparing delicious food for us even in the jungle was a great luxury that we enjoyed a lot. Don’t expect much more luxury, though. It’s all simple, but real. The places in Arunachal Pradesh are definitely off the beaten track. This makes encounters with local tribes people all the more authentic. The great service NbNE offers, is to take you there.

You should plan to arrive at Guwahati by late afternoon. We will receive and transfer you from the airport/railway station to your hotel where you will be accorded a traditional Ahomi welcome.

Later in the afternoon, we recommend a darshan (auspicious visit) of the Maa Kamakhya Temple. Kamakhya Dhaam is dedicated to the Mother Goddess Kamakhya and is considered most sacred and oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas on earth. In the evening, the Tour leader will brief you on your North East India bike ride. You will also familiarise with the bikes that would be your partner for next 2 weeks or so.

You will then enjoy a fine dining experience with traditional Ahomi cuisine.

After breakfast, we will line up for a photograph with our bikes. This is the traditional Viktorianz way of commencing the ride every morning. A quick brief for the day’s ride and wheels roll. We will ride out of Guwahati to Kaziranga along the scenic Asian Highway-1. This nearly 200 km ride will take us 4 hrs of saddle time. A quick lunch at the resort and we will be off to a Jeep Safari.

Kaziranga National Park, a world heritage site, is home to nearly two-thirds of the world’s Great One-horned Rhinoceros. The park has the highest density of tigers among the protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. Though sighting of tigers are difficult because of the tall grasses that provide excellent camouflage, their presence can be felt everywhere by way of pug marks, kills and territorial markings. You will also see large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer.

After resting at the resort, in the evening you will be entertained by tribal dances and music by a cultural troupe. If you are keen, next morning you could do an optional elephant safari which starts at 6:30 AM - this will have to be booked before hand and there are no guarantees.

After tea and cookies, we are off to the park, where our elephant safari awaits us. We will proceed for an hour and half astride these gentle giants into the wild grass for up close sightings of the rhinos. The view of the park, the river at sunrise is ethereal. Also, this safari provides excellent opportunities for out-of-the world wild life photography, so keep your cameras, lenses and gear handy.

We get back for a piping hot breakfast. We then load up and line up for the short ride of 3 hours to Jorhat. A quick lunch at the Hotel and we set out for Majuli.

With all of its 452 sq km, Majuli Island is the world’s largest fresh water island. Amidst the mighty Brahmaputra River’s ochre sandbanks, Majuli is hauntingly scenic and beautiful with a tapestry of green rice fields and purple meadows of hyacinth blossoms. We would spend 2 nights and a full day on this unique River Island.

The island is home to nearly 100 species of birds and also people of neo-Vaishnavite philosophy. Viktorianz advises you to get here as soon as possible. Surveys indicate that at current levels of erosion the island will cease to exist within the next two decades.

After breakfast, today we ride into capital of Nagaland and key location in Second World War - Kohima. Nagaland is inhabited by 16 major tribes, each distinct in character from the other in terms of customs, language and dress.

Riders! on this day, be prepared to be enthralled by an explosion of culture, dance, music, art, cuisine and so much more. We go today to the Hornbill festival. You will learn during your time at the festival about this land of folklore passed down the generations through word of mouth.

We will spend most of each day at The Heritage Complex at Kisama which is a cluster of sixteen houses of each tribe called ""Morung or Youth Dormitory"". Each tribe is distinguished by the colourful and intricately designed costumes, jewellery and beads that they adorn.

The traditional ceremonial attire of each tribe is an awe inspiring sight to behold; the multi-coloured spears and dao (machetes) decorated with dyed goat’s hair, the headgear made of finely woven bamboo interlaced with orchid stems, adorned with boar's teeth and hornbill's feathers, elephant tusk armlets.

There is a bewildering variety of food; smoked or grilled to perfection, pork, chicken, beef, fish, leafy vegetable stews and sauces and currries. For the adventurous, there are insects and worms as also dog meat! All of it served with delicious sticky rice. The odd place also serves north Indian dishes, albeit a very limited choice. Every night, there is an ongoing Rock Festival at the nearby IG Stadium. Top bands from Nagaland and the rest of India perform.

Cycling the Himalayas: Selected Routes and Itineraries for Bikepacking India

Cycle touring the indian himalayas; manipur to ladakh by bike.

Let me take you on an unforgettable journey cycling the Himalayas. To the majestic landscapes of the far north of India.

In 2015, I cycled from Vietnam to the UK . During that time, I cycled a fair portion of northern India. Primarily the remote North East as I crossed from Myanmar into India.

Since then, I’ve been living in India seasonally in Goa. I chose to stay for the lockdown and consequently, had greater access to explore the country further.

At the tail-end of 2021, I cycled from Chandigarh to Leh, a long-held ambition to see more of the northwest of the country.

Cycling the Himalayas

This piece, Cycling the Himalayas, is intended to offer a broad insight into bikepacking India generally and bring the northern regions an up-to-date route itinerary for self-supported bike travel.

If you need it, here’s a ballpark cycle touring kit list, and you probably don’t need one for this trip, but here’s a selection of bikepacking tents .

I’ll start chronologically, from 2015 up to date which will take us neatly East to West across the north of India, with a mini hiking trip to Nepal in the middle.

My approach to long-distance bike travel tends towards the ‘screw it, let’s do it’ school of planning.

I’ll include details for altitude, distances and terrain where necessary but largely speaking, in 2023, most of India is accessible and in my experience, anything is possible.

Imphal to Cherrapunji by bike: Cycling the Himalayas in Remote North East India

The North East of India offers bikepacking expeditions that are full of surprises, challenges, and incredible encounters.

Much of the region’s roads are little more than gravel tracks, save the Assam, where there is pristine asphalt to extract the tea with a minimum of fuss.

Anywhere in Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh will yield a fine fix of gravel travel with the odd tribal encounter thrown in for good measure.

The Challenging Route to Mon

It all started high above the town of Kiphire, where my cycling buddy, John, and I received a daunting warning about dangerous rebels and blocked roads.

But we were determined to explore the region, and the only direct road to Mon led us through this treacherous path.

We pushed forward on a rugged dirt track, tackling challenging terrains and facing scarce food supplies.

Along the way, we crossed paths with the Tikhir tribe and their blockade, but a brief negotiation and a secret route helped us break through the obstacles and reach our destination.

Experiencing Culture in Manipur

As we journeyed through Manipur, we stumbled upon the village of Lunghar. A sudden earthquake jolted us from our sleep in the guest house of the local Pastor.

But this was just the beginning of an incredible cultural experience. We attended the first church service of the year and were welcomed with open arms.

The legacy of Christian missionaries in the region was evident, as many locals spoke English and showed immense kindness, generosity, and warmth.

A Week with the Headhunters of Longwa

Finally, we reached Mon, and our adventure took an even more fascinating turn in the village of Longwa.

This place was unique as the international border divided it in two – the chief slept in Burma but took breakfast in India.

Our host for the week was Longshah, the junior village president, who also ran the only Homestay in Longwa .

During our stay, we had the humbling opportunity to attend the funeral of one of the last remaining headhunters.

Witnessing their traditions and history was truly a moving experience.

Cycling the Assam: A Break from the Mountains

A touch of media attention in assam.

At this point, John took a train to Kolkota. His trip coming to an end after three months cycling to the Himalayas.

I ventured onwards into Assam, my journey caught the attention of the local news channel, News Live.

I was interviewed about our motivations for this grand adventure. It was a moment of introspection as I tried to put into words the reasons behind our journey.

Later, as if the universe conspired to answer my thoughts, I encountered a pair of elephants by the roadside.

However, I couldn’t bring myself to ride them, knowing the mistreatment they often endure.

shillong - the scotland of the east

Exploring the Scotland of the East

In Meghalaya, I was awestruck by the natural beauty that surrounded us. Cherrapunji, known as the wettest place on Earth, was our ultimate destination.

The living root bridges and abundant waterfalls in this region were absolutely mesmerizing.

I dared to venture into the West Khasi Hills despite warnings of danger.

Surrounded by pristine nature and welcomed by kind families, I discovered the true essence of the Scotland of the East.

Cycling the Himalayas in remote North East India was an experience of a lifetime

As I reflect on my journey from Imphal to Cherrapunji, I’m overwhelmed by the incredible encounters, the breathtaking beauty of the region, and the kindness of the people we met along the way.

It’s moments like these that fuel my passion for adventure cycling and reminds me of the untamed beauty that lies waiting to be explored on two wheels.

Cycling from Meghalaya to Darjeeling

The next phase of this East-to-West bikepacking itinerary is an incredible journey from Meghalaya to Darjeeling.

Meghalaya is sandwiched between Bangladesh and the Brahmaputra River.

A little south of the Himalayas proper, this unique state of India is a rare and exotic place to visit for the intrepid cycle touring explorer.

Crossing the border at Tamu/Moreh

After a month in Myanmar, I enjoyed tea and puri at a chai stand in Moreh town, I unexpectedly met Jiles, a 21-year-old Belgian hitchhiker crossing the border from Myanmar to Manipur.

It was a pleasant surprise to find another traveller in these lesser-travelled regions of North East India .

Little did we know that this encounter was just the beginning of meeting like-minded adventurers on our respective journeys.

Cherrapunji’s Annual Feast

Arriving in Cherrapunji, known as one of the wettest places on Earth, I was recommended to see the living root bridges.

At By The Way hostel, we met Heprit, the owner with a striking resemblance to Robbie Coltrane.

My stay took an exciting turn when I again met Jiles and Thomas, a French vegetarian hiker.

Together, we experienced the joy and surprises of the annual feast in the village, complete with music contests, traditional songs, and a unique butchering ceremony for the feast.

The Road to Lava: Cycling the Himalayan foothills

My Indian bike adventure continued with a thrilling ride towards Lava.

The landscape was simply awe-inspiring – alpine forests, rivers cascading down deep valleys, and picturesque curves.

I camped with locals, shared music, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Exploring Gangtok by Bike

Reaching Sikkim, the smallest and cleanest Indian state, I had to obtain an Inner Line Permit .

Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, fascinated me with its modernity and vibrant culture. I met more fellow travellers, including Aga, Jack, and a Liverpudlian called Mike – the Indian Bill Oddy.

A day trip to Mangan and a visit to a Buddhist temple in north Sikkim enriched our experience further.

Riding the Steep Climb to Darjeeling

As I left Gangtok, I decided to test my strength and attempt the steep climb to Darjeeling. As you’d expect cycling the Himalayas, there are some rather epic ascents. This one was among the most memorable.

The road to Teesta provided breathtaking views and an adrenaline-pumping descent. However, the climb proved to be challenging, and a broken chain forced me to take a detour.

Thankfully, a friendly local named Rinchin came to my rescue and offered me a place to stay in his beautiful home nestled among tea estates.

Darjeeling Unlimited

The next morning, I woke up to a stunning sunrise over Darjeeling, a reward for my perseverance.

The journey had its ups and downs, but every encounter and experience made it truly special.

Cycling from Meghalaya to Darjeeling was an adventure beyond my imagination

From meeting fellow travellers and joining in the festivities of local communities to facing challenging climbs and enjoying the beauty of the Himalayas, every moment was a reminder of the joys and rewards of adventure cycling.

Walking the Himalayas

This trek was a fitting end to my four months of exploration in India and marked the beginning of my foot-based Himalayan escapades.

Before even starting the trek, I had an unforgettable experience near the Nepalese border patrol office in Bhimdatta.

I joined the locals for a refreshing dip in the Sharda Mahakali river, feeling the powerful flow cleanse my soul.

The porous Nepali/Indian borders make this remote crossing a bustling trade hub for the locals on both sides.

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit

The Annapurna Circuit is a challenging and rewarding adventure, and I was fortunate to meet some incredible people along the way.

I crossed paths with Patrick and Rachel , an American couple cycling around Southeast Asia on their anniversary trip.

It warmed my heart to hear their love story, and it gave me hope that romance could be found even on the road as a solo cyclist.

Not Cycling the Annapurna Circuit

Later, I encountered Chris and Isabella, a Polish couple who had just finished cycling the Annapurna Circuit, including the famous Thorung La pass at a staggering 5,416 meters.

Their enthusiasm was infectious, alas I decided to hike the circuit to experience one of the world’s best hiking trails fully.

I also spoke with my best buddy and tourer in crime, Adrian, having trekked the circuit some years earlier, he suggested the bike was a poor companion for the mission.

Setting out from Besi Sahar

The Annapurna Circuit offers a variety of landscapes, from alpine forests to grassy meadows and rocky valleys.

The trek to the pass was physically demanding but rewarding.

I formed a team – the Dream Team – with Ananda and Maarten, fellow trekkers, and together we pushed our limits and celebrated each milestone.

The day we reached the Thorung La pass was particularly memorable. The stunning views of Annapurna II and the surrounding peaks were awe-inspiring.

I was even surprised by a group of girls with their midriffs bearing the message, “Thorung La Pass 5,416m – James, you’re the man!”

Best Yak Pizza At 4,000m

It was a delightful surprise and added to the joy of reaching the pass.

We descended to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site, where we found solace at the Bob Marley Hotel.

There, we enjoyed good food, hot showers, and a celebratory night of camaraderie and laughter.

However, all good things must come to an end.

Straight Outta Jomsom

Time and finances were running out, so I had to part ways with my Dream Team and head to Jomsom to catch a bus back to Pokhara.

The journey was long and challenging, but every step of the way was worth it.

My adventure on the Annapurna Circuit came to a close, but the memories and friendships I made will stay with me forever.

The stunning landscapes, the physical challenges, and the camaraderie with fellow trekkers made this journey a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Now, as I sit here reminiscing about those incredible days on the Annapurna Circuit, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore the beauty of Nepal and the Himalayas.

If you ever get the chance to trek the Annapurna Circuit, I urge you to do it. It’s a life-changing experience that will fill your heart with joy, wonder, and a sense of accomplishment.

Manali to Leh Bike Trip: Bikepacking North West Indian Himalayas

The final section on Cycling the Himalayas is the most recent excursion; a Manali to Leh bike trip.

The adventure was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with breathtaking landscapes, challenging terrains, and unforgettable experiences.

Join me as I recount the highs and lows of this epic cycling expedition through the heart of the Indian Himalayas.

ascending from manali to marhi up the rohtang pass by bike

Setting Off from Chandigarh:

The journey began with a typical distraction as I needed to replace a snapped bungee right after getting off the train in Chandigarh.

Typical me, always finding some excuse to dawdle!

After pottering around the town, I finally hit the road around 1 pm, cruising along the wide boulevard-style streets of Chandigarh before heading towards the hills.

Cycling Across Himachal Pradesh:

As I pedalled through Himachal Pradesh, the landscape transformed into Big India – full of vibrant colours and endless possibilities.

The rain didn’t dampen my spirits, and despite some technical difficulties, I pushed on, embracing the immersive experience of being drenched to the bone.

The stunning ride made up for any inconvenience, and I found myself pushing through the treacherous conditions to reach Baddi in Himachal for a restful night.

cycling the himalayas: baralacha pass altitude 4850m

Cycling at Himalayan Altitude

On day three, I decided to take a bus to Manali to fix my rear calliper, ensuring a safe and enjoyable ride ahead.

The road was under construction, and I thanked my lucky stars for the decision. Cycling without a rear brake would have been foolish.

The scenic journey along the River Beas was a sight to behold, providing a glimpse of the majesty that awaited me.

Rejuvenated and Recharged

After a day of recuperation in Manali, my energy was renewed, and I set off towards Marhi, tackling a 5,000m mountain.

The climb was tough, but the picturesque scenery and the thrill of reaching the summit made it all worthwhile.

I met fellow cyclists along the way, making new connections and sharing the joy of the journey.

Biking into Ladakh

As I ventured further into Ladakh, the challenges escalated.

Altitude sickness and flu symptoms tested my resilience, but with determination, support from friends, and a support vehicle, I conquered the passes one by one.

The Gata Loops and Tanglang La tested my mettle, but the breathtaking views and the camaraderie with my cycling companion, Avinash, made it all unforgettable.

The Final Stretch to Leh

The last leg of the journey along the Indus River was awe-inspiring, with stunning landscapes and gompas dotting the route.

I reunited with Avinash in Leh, and we celebrated the achievement of crossing five of India’s highest passes with our trusty bicycles.

The Manali to Leh bike trip was a thrilling adventure of a lifetime.

The challenging terrains, the breathtaking scenery, and the camaraderie with fellow cyclists made it an experience to remember.

If you’re a bikepacking enthusiast looking for an epic adventure, I highly recommend embarking on this incredible Manali to Leh cycling expedition.

The Wild East

Explore untamed India on two wheels! Tucked away in the far north-east of India, wedged between the borders of Bhutan, Burma and Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh is India’s newest and least-known state. Before the region was elevated to statehood in 1986, Arunachal Pradesh, along with Assam, Nagaland and 4 other states was known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). Except for occasional forays by administrators and anthropologists during the time of the British, nothing much was known about this area for most of the 20th century. The isolation of the North East Frontier Agency was legally safeguarded by India’s government. Before laws permitting limited tourism were passed in 1995, even Indian citizens were not allowed to visit. The North East Frontier Agency lands never belonged to ancient India. They were, and still are, populated by Mongoloid and Mon-Khmer people, far removed from the Aryan-Dravidian blood of the mainstream. The people here are animists, except in the Tawang area where they accepted Buddhism. In the Highlands, wild Burmese tribes enthusiastically practised indiscriminate headhunting until as late as the fifties. To the north, Mongoloid tribes live, bare-bodied in breech clouts. Nagaland is almost entirely inhabited by 16 Tibeto-Burmese tribes. Among them are Angamis, Aos, Konyaks, Kukis, Lothas, Semas and Wanchus. The Nagas, who were once headhunters, have been known for their fierceness and the regular raids they made on Assam and Burma. The warring tribes believed that since the enemy’s animated soul or “waha”, resided at the nape of the neck, it could only be set free once beheaded. It was also believed that human heads exuded a mystical force or “mio”, that brought prosperity to the people and benefitted the crops. It is for this reason that enemy heads (and those of dead comrades) were prized and collected.

The bike trip to Tezpur will flow across Brahmaputra River offering the tranquil atmosphere of Assamese villages. En route, you may encounter vast tea estates, a testament to Assam's prominence in tea production where you will get a brief of whole tea making process. By late afternoon, you will reach Tezpur known as Cultural capital of Assam.

Start the thrilling ride from Tezpur to Bomdila, covering approximately 235 kilometers and taking around 7-8 hours, offers a breathtaking expedition through the undulating landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh. Before reaching Bomdila, you will pass through Dirang Valley. Take a moment to soak in the breathtaking views of the Dirang River and the surrounding hills. The picturesque landscapes and the traditional Monpa houses add to the charm of this region. Upon reaching Bomdila, explore the town's Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, such as the GRL Monastery and the Thub-Chog Gatsel Ling Monastery. Enjoy the serenity and spiritual ambiance that these monastic complexes offer. Do not miss the chance to relish panoramic views of the Himalayas from the Bomdila Viewpoint.

Today will be a long and high road as we pass the 13700ft Sela Pass. We start with a descent towards the Dirang Valley. The next stage takes us up to the Sela pass which is a constant climb. There is always a high chance of finding snow up here, but the Army usually ensure its open throughout the year. From here, a long descent with numerous hairpins takes us to the valley floor only to start climbing again. Situated at 10,000ft Tawang is the last proper town before Tibet in this sector. Tawang, a town famous for its Monastery which is one of the important religious centres of Tibetian Buddhism and its panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas into Bhutan in the west and Tibet on the North. In older times this used to be an important town due to its proximity to Tibet and Bhutan.

This is an optional day, those who want to rest and explore around Tawang can do so. For the ones who want to ride we take you close to the tri-juncture of Bhutan-Tibet and India. Here we will visit the Gorsum Chorten. Gorsum chorten has many interesting stories behind it. Each way is about 75Km, this excursion will take the whole day.

Begin your day in Tawang by exploring the Tawang Monastery, one of the largest and most revered monasteries in India. Leave Tawang to brace yourself for the scenic and adventurous drive through the Sela Pass, situated at an altitude of about 13,700 feet. Marvel at the snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and prayer flags that adorn the landscape. The journey from Tawang to Dirang spans approx 140 kilometers and takes around 6-7 hours, offers a mesmerizing drive through the picturesque landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh. This route takes you through mountainous terrain, charming valleys, and quaint villages, providing an enriching experience of the Eastern Himalayas. Post arrival in Dirang, check in your hotel and stay overnight here.

Leaving early, we make our way back to the Brahmaputra valley of Assam. Our destination is the Nameri wildlife sanctuary. For most part of the day, we are off the main road as we ride on little used roads. Here in Nameri, we will stay in the eco camp run by the Anglers Association.

We will spend the whole of the next day here indulging in some Wildlife walks, rafting, and relaxing. The Jia Bhoroli River flows through Nameri, offering an excellent opportunity for white-water rafting experience.

Leaving early, we will head out towards Shillong the capital of Meghalaya. A colonial time hill town Shillong still preserves its old charms mixed now with modernity. The roads are excellent and mostly 4 lanes till Shillong which will enhance the North East Bike trip fun and make it exhilarating.

We ride on some of the best riding roads of Meghalaya today. We head out first towards Jowai the capital of the Jaintia Hill district. Enroute, we visit the Nartiang Monoliths a popular place of visit while in Meghalaya. Our destination for the day is Dawki lying at the border with Bangladesh. Today we will camp on the beach along the topaz blue waters of the river. Must try to take a boat ride on the river and experience the surreal beauty of the surroundings.

Start your day with a beautiful ride from Dawki to Cherrapunjee which will pass through Shillong. As you leave Shillong, the road takes you through the breathtaking East Khasi Hills. Enjoy the changing landscape as you ascend and descend hills, pass through charming villages. After reaching Cherrapunjee, visit Nohkalikai Falls, one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding hills. Plan a trek to see the famous living root bridges in the nearby villages.

Our last day of the ride will take us back to Guwahati. The distance of 200km will take us about 7 to 8 hrs to cover. Our hotel in Guwahti lies in the city bypass, near the transporters, making it easy for those who need to truck their bikes back.

15 days in North East India | A Travel Guide and Itinerary

15 days in North East India | A Travel Guide and Itinerary

Jack Kerouac in his book On the Road , says, “There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.” Traversing through majestic mountains and lustrous valleys in the middle of nowhere while admiring the flawless creations of nature seems like an idea, too good to be real for now. But it is wise enough to find respite from mundane schedules by making a virtual tour of destinations in your bucket list and plan for future travel.

north east india cycle tour

North East India is known to be in the bucket list of many discerning travelers. The alluring beauty of nature and rich culture intertwine to make the North East a top pick for many. The eight states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim constitute the North East region in India.

The vas t region with countless idyllic travel destinations requires you to spend months there to be able to explore the region well but in reality, this is not something everyone can possibly do. But setting aside 15 days in a year to head to the rather unexplored part of India is something doable. Hence, I am compiling this 15-Day Travel Itinerary comprising of 3 states in the North East – Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

If you are someone who had always wished to wander through the winding roads in the North East and jump into the pools of hidden waterfalls but never found a perfect itinerary to make the best out of your available time, this itinerary is for you. Go ahead to read and plan your next trip to the North East.

If you manage to reach Shillong by afternoon, you can easily take a short tour of the city. Hire a local cab to visit Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak, which are within 15 kms distance from the central part of the city. Ward’s Lake is right in the heart of the city and you may stop by to spend some quiet time by the lake.

In the evening, take a stroll in the Police Bazar area and check out the amazing cafes and restaurants in the area.

Day 2 : Shillong to Cherrapunjee

  • Private cabs can be booked from the main market area, known as Police Bazar.
  • There are shared vehicles available too which are available from Bara Bazar Area . Usually these are Tata Sumos or Altos that ply between Shillong and Cherrapunjee. Cherrapunjee and Sohra are the same places. Do not get confused if the taxi drivers are calling out for passengers for Sohra.
  • It takes about 2 hours to travel the distance of 52 kms.

Things to do in Cherrapunjee

Make sure you start early from Shillong so that you may reach Cherrapunjee by first half of the day. You may hire a local cab to take you around the famous spots in Cherrapunjee. Here’s a list of things you can do at Cherrapunjee:

Visit the tallest plunge waterfall in India, Nohkalikai Falls , which has a height of 350 metres. There is an entry gate from where you can reach the mouth of the waterfall by following the trail. The view point of the waterfall is about 4-8 kms from Cherrapunjee, depending on where you start your journey from.

Take a tour of Mawsmai Caves , located about 6 kms away from Cherrapunjee. The cave is made of limestone and is home to unique flora and fauna. Once you enter the cave, you are only allowed to walk up till 150 metres inside the cave and the rest of the cave is not open for visitors.

Arwah Caves is a hidden gem in Cherrapunjee. This cave does not have well demarcated trails and thus, it is advisable to take a guide along with you. You need to take a detour from the main road and cover a muddy patch of road to reach Arwah Cave. Before you reach the entrance of the cave, you’d find a beautiful bridge. You would spot limestones and fossils inside the cave. A visit to Arwah Cave would be an adventurous activity. But considering the fact that you only have one day to visit all these places, you might have to pick one between Mawsmai and Arwah Caves as they are located in the extreme opposite locations outside Cherrapunjee.

Day 3 : Cherrapunjee – Tyrna – Nongriat – Tyrna

Start your day early as you have to trek the most talked about Living Root bridge of Meghalaya in Nongriat on this day.

  • Take a private taxi from Cherrapunjee to drop you at Tyrna , the starting point of the trek.
  • It would cost you about INR 500 or a little more for this distance.
  • From Tyrna Village , your downward hike for Nongriat starts .
  • It is advisable to take a porter if you have a heavy rucksack. A porter would charge INR 500 a day.
  • It usually takes about 2 hours for the downward hike. But you may finish the hike faster depending on your speed.

After crossing many suspension bridges and root bridges along the forest trail, you’d reach one of the major highlights of Meghalaya, the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Only when you see the marvelous creation, you’d know how beautiful and powerful nature can be, if utilised well. Sit by the natural pool and soak in all the energy of the forest.

You can also ask your guide to take you to the Rainbow Waterfall , located a short hike away from Nongriat village. There are also a number of gorgeous natural pools which are untraceable and only known by the locals. If time permits, pay a visit to these naturals pools to make your day even more exciting.

By afternoon, start your upward hike back to Tyrna. The upward hike may take a longer time. Reach back to the starting point and stay at Tyrna, to get an experience of the rural side of Meghalaya.

Day 4 : Tyrna to Shillong

On the fourth day of your trip, head back to Shillong and spend a day in the Scotland of the East.

  • Travel to Cherrapunjee from Tyrna in a reserved cab , following the same route.
  • From Cherrapunjee, you can hire a vehicle for Shillong or take a shared vehicle .

Upon reaching Shillong, spend the day to explore the famous spots of the city if you had missed them on the day of your arrival.

Day 5 : Shillong – Tezpur – Kaziranga

This will be a long day on the roads as you head back to Assam from Shillong. To proceed with your journey to the North East, you’d need to head to Tezpur in Assam from where you will further head to Kaziranga National Park.

  • The first and the most comfortable way to travel to Tezpur from Assam is to reserve a vehicle. But it will cost you a whopping INR 5000-6000. If you are traveling in a group and would not want to compromise on comfort, you may choose this option.
  • There are bus services between these two places. The buses would take about 7 hours to cover the distance and the schedule can be checked and tickets can be booked on the Assam State Transport Corporation ‘s website .

Tezpur to Kaziranga is a 40 kms journey that takes about 1.5 hours. It’s best that you move to Kaziranga from Tezpur and spend the night there because the safaris start very early in the morning. You need to spend a night in a nearby homestay or resort in order to make it to the morning safaris, which are most preferred. Staying in a cottage or homestay in Kaziranga will also give you a taste of the Assamese culture and daily life.

  • You will find Assam State Transport Corporation Buses from Tezpur to go to Kaziranga.
  • You can also reserve a cab to drop you off till your accommodation this being a short distance. It will make your travel easier.

You can put up in the cottages that are run by the Kaziranga National Park. But do note that they are more on the expensive side for solo travellers. Works fine if you are in a group.

You can also opt to stay in a cottage near the National Park, which are more budget friendly. Some options are listed here:

Dhanshree Resort |   Kaziranga Florican Lodge | Kaziranga Resort

End the day and get some good sleep as you reach your destination as the day starts very early the next day.

Day 6 : Excursion to Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park, well known across the country for being home to the one-horned rhino is one of the Best National Parks of India. Not only the one-horned rhino, but you can also spot Royal Bengal tigers, swamp deer, wild water buffaloes and Asian elephants in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread over 430 square kilometers, Kaziranga National Park houses unique flora and fauna.

north east india cycle tour

There are two ways you can take a tour around in this place. The first is an Elephant Safari and the other is a Jeep Safari. An Elephant Safari starts as early as 5:30am in the morning and you need to book them a day prior to when you want to go for the safari. The slots for Indians are way too less than the number of slots reserved for foreigners. Also, not many people personally prefer Elephant Safaris on grounds of morality. But even if you want to, you may not get a chance at this because of the one day prior booking policy.

The best way to explore the Kaziranga National Park is to opt for a Jeep Safari which has many slots, even in the afternoons. Please note that Kaziranga National Park is only open during the months of November to April so plan your travel accordingly  if you don’t want to be disappointed at the last moment.

  • The tickets can be booked from the counter on the same day on first come first served basis.
  • The Safaris are about 2 hours long. You can check the schedule of the Jeep Safaris beforehand.
  • You cannot book a seat but will have to book the entire Jeep and pay an extra amount for cameras. If you are traveling solo, the best is to wait and join another group and split the cost.
  • An entire Safari costs between INR 1550-2750. There are different price ranges for different circuits. For cameras, you need to pay INR 100 extra per camera; INR 200 for foreigners.
  • From your stay, you will need a vehicle to drop you at the starting point of the Safari. You can ask your hosts to arrange for this and they’d be glad to help you out.

If you take a morning safari, you will have ample time to head to the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park . The biggest Orchid park in the North East belt in India, this park hosts 500 varieties of wild orchids, 132 species of fruits and vegetables, various species of bamboo, cane and other plants.

After a tour of the Orchid park, you can head back to Tezpur from Kaziranga and spend the night in Tezpur.

Day 7 : Tezpur to Dirang

Dirang is a picture perfect town in West Kameng District in Arunachal Pradesh, often chosen as a transit point by traveler. Dirang is quite unexplored till this point of time probably because its counterpart, Bomdila is known more in the travellers circuit. Surrounded by tall mountains, beautiful monasteries and crystal clear river waters, a stop at Dirang would be the best way to start your trip to Arunachal Pradesh.

  • There won’t be shared cabs specifically  meant for Dirang but you can hop onto one going to Tawang and get down at Dirang.
  • Shared Sumos are found at ASTC bus stand in Tezpur and they leave around 6am. Check for the Tata Sumo Counter for Tawang as you reach there. Make sure you reach well ahead of time to find yourself the best seats, else you will end up stuck at the last row with no legroom for this long journey.
  • The shared Sumo fair for Tawang from Tezpur is usually INR 750 per person . Dirang would cost you lesser than that. But post pandemic, the costs are expected to go higher.
  • A reserved vehicle from Tezpur to Dirang would cost somewhere around INR 8000 . If you are in a group, you may opt for this as you won’t be compromising on comfort.
  • The distance is about 200 kms and it takes around 6 hours to cover.

Day 8 : Explore Dirang

Even though Dirang has gained popularity only among travelers only in the recent years, there is a lot to explore in this quaint village. One day is never enough to explore the place to the fullest. Still, something is better than nothing so you can utilise the day to the fullest and go around and breathe the fresh air of this surreal destination, your first stop in Arunachal Pradesh.

Things to do in Dirang

Visit Dirang Dzong located on the banks of Dirang Chu (river), an outstanding remnant of the rich cultural history of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a small village with a few houses that are more than 500 years old. Dirang Dzong also has a prison which dates back to 9th century. Walk through the houses and alleys and interact with the locals to know more about the ancient architecture, traditions, art and culture. It is located about 3-4 kms from the main town of Dirang. You can take a local cab but the distance is walkable if you are comfortable walking.

Originally known as the Thupsung Dhargye monastery, Dirang Monastery is a rather new monastery and recently renovated. The monastery is surrounded by manicured gardens and the view from here is serene. Spend an hour at this place to experience tranquility. It is located right in the heart of Dirang.

There is no better way to explore a place than to explore the place on foot. Walk around the town, the river banks and drink tea with the locals. You will know a lot more about the history and culture than what the internet tells you about a place.

Day 9 : Dirang to Tawang

  • The shared sumos start very early in the morning. Talk to your hotel/homestay management to find out if you can book a seat the previous way. There is no straightjacket formula to traveling in public transports in the North East.
  • The shared sumos would cost around INR 450 from Dirang to Tawang and travel time would be around 6 hours.
  • You can also join other groups if they are booking a private vehicle and share the expenses.
  • Ask the driver to stop at Sela Lake for tea. That way you get a glimpse of the splendid Sela Lake.

Spend the evening strolling around the town of Tawang or head to Dharma Coffee House for a cup of hot chocolate.

Day 10 : Explore Tawang

To explore the various places in Tawang, the only option is to book a local cab for sightseeing. If you are traveling solo, you would probably have to join another group. But there is no issue if you are in a group. In the local taxi stand, you will find local drivers who conduct these Bum La Pass, Sangetsar Lake, P T Tso Lake sightseeing trips. You will need a permit from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District to visit Bum La Pass . But not to worry, the driver can arrange that for you easily. Make sure you make this arrangement right on the day you arrive. A full day trip will cost you between INR 5000-6000.

  • Visit the Tawang Monastery , the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. Situated at a height of 3000 metres, this three stories monastery is postcard perfect and one of the main highlights of your trip to Tawang.
  • Visit the historically significant Urgeling Gompa , the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.
  • Head to Tawang War Memorial , which commemorates the martyrdom of 2140 Indian soldiers of the Indo-China War.
  • Explore the popular Bumla pass , located at an altitude of 4633 meters in  the Indo-China border.
  • Stop by Sangetsar Lake,  more famously known as Madhuri Lake after a Bollywood movie starring Madhuri Dixit was shot here. A walk around the lake will be enough to refresh your mind and soul.
  • Visit the P T Tso Lake , another famous spot in this circuit. With crystal clear waters and mountains on all sides, you will find this lake a rejuvenating escape.

Head back to your hotel/homestay and rest in the evening.

Day 11 : Tawang to Bomdila

This day holds a long journey for you. The shares Sumos for Bomdila leave very early in the morning and hence, you’d have to be prepared to leave early.

  • Hop onto a shared Sumo from Tawang.
  • It takes between 7-8 hours to cover this leg of the journey, depending on the conditions of the road.
  • The fare for a seat in a shared vehicle is around INR 600.
  • Reserved Vehicles would cost about INR 10000 (Xylo/Innova).

Holiday Hills | Hotel Tashi Den | Doe-Gu-Khil Guest House

Spend the day rest of the evening strolling around the streets of Bomdila or stay back at your hotel/homestay.

Day 12 : Explore Bomdila

Bomdila is another transit point apart from Dirang, between Tezpur and Tawang. Bomdila is known more and opted by the travelers because of its easy accessibility with other places. Situated amidst lofty mountains and home to beautiful monasteries, Bomdila truly deserves the attention of the travelers. There are many things you can do in this quaint town. Some of the places of interest are listed here.

  • Head to the highest view point of Bomdila, RR Hill to witness a unparalelled views of Bhutan and Tibet.
  • Visit the gorgeously built Bomdila Monastery . Built in 1965, this monastery is divided into three segments, the Upper Gompa, the Middle Gompa and the Lower Gompa. The Upper Gompa is situated on a steep mountain slope and is the biggest among the three.
  • Hire a vehicle and head to Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary, located 20 kms outside the town. It is a great spot for bird watchers.
  • Head to the apple orchards of Bomdila and pack some apples for your journey backwards.

Day 13 : Bomdila – Tezpur – Guwahati

  • There are two possible ways to reach Guwahati.
  • You will find direct buses that go to Guwahati but they are extremely long and tiring. A 15 hours of journey through the bumpy roads would be no less than a pain. But you may still opt for this if you are used to traveling in buses.
  • The alternative option is to break the journey at Tezpur . First take a Shared Jeep to Tezpur that’d cost you INR 350 . From Tezpur, you may either take another Sumo or get onto an ASTC bus towards Guwahati. Take a seat in the front of the bus and it will be quite a comfortable journey.

TRAVEL TIME:

Bomdila to Tezpur – 4.5 hours

Tezpur to Guwahati – 4.5 hours

(It is always best to keep some buffer time and not having anything booked in advance)

After a long day of travel, retreat to sleep early as you approach the last day of your trip.

Though the itinerary starts from Guwahati, you technically do not get to spend a day in Guwahati, often considered a gateway and junction to travel to all other destinations in the North East region. It is thus advisable to dedicate a leisurely day to explore the city at your own pace. There would be no checklists to follow or rush to visit all possible points. Just take a walk, spend the afternoon at a cafe or engage in some shopping at Fancy Bazaar or The Maati Centre .

north east india cycle tour

But if you are still keen on visiting some popular spots in the city, you may head to Assam State Museum or stargaze at Guwahati Planetarium.

If you want to add on a few extra days to the itinerary and explore some more places in Assam, you must check these 6 jaw-dropping locations in Assam that should be on your list.

Fly out or take a train back from Guwahati with bag full of memories.

Day 3 : Cherrpunjee – Tyrna – Nongriat – Tyrna

Day 4 : Tyrna – Cherrapunjee – Shillong

Day 6 : Excursion at Kaziranga National Park – Transfer to Tezpur

Day 13 : Bomdila -Tezpur – Guwahati

  • It is best to travel in the months of November to early December or March-April . The itinerary covers high altitude destinations like Tawang and you would not want to get stuck due to excessive snowfall during winter months or landslides in monsoon.
  • Traveling to Arunachal Pradesh requires an Inner Line Permit which maybe applied online and obtained beforehand. The fee is INR 100 for Indians and is valid for 30 days.
  • You will be on the roads on almost every day of the trip. It is advisable to carry water bottle and dry fruits so that you can stay hydrated and have something to munch on.
  • Please avoid carrying snacks in plastic packs . Most of these locations are in remote places and they do not have a recycling system. If at all you produce plastic waste, carry them till Guwahati and dispose them at Guwahati .
  • Always keep some buffer time when you travel in public transports . You never know what unforeseen circumstances may arrive.
  • Reach the booking counters well before time so that you may find the front seats in the Tata Sumos . If possible, book both the seats so that you can travel comfortably.
  • Respect the culture of the locals and thank them for every service.

The unforgettable experience of this motorbike expedition to Assam, Arunachal, Nagaland begins in Guwahati, from where you ride to Tezpur. The trip is well planned to get you adjusted to the regional weather conditions in the beginning, and rough riding on muddy sections and winding roads in the later part. Enjoy some of the best sights on this venture after arriving in the Dirang Valley. This is a popular stop for tourists, travelling between Guwahati and Tawang. The latter is also your next destination on this North East motor bike expedition. Only accessible through Sela Pass, this place is near the Indo-China border, and it features the second largest monastery in the world. On your visit to this monastery or gompa, witness the awe-inspiring murals on the walls of its dukhang or the assembly hall. Sangetsar Lake is another prominent attraction near the town of Tawang that you visit. From here, passing through Bomdila, reach Nameri. Staying in ecological tents here would be an amazing experience.

Now, a relatively easier ride on National Highway 52, followed by tough biking through the forests of Arunachal Pradesh, leads to Ziro. While on the way to Daporijo, you may get a chance to witness the culture and heritage of the tribal people of the region. Along, near the confluence of the Siyom and Sipu Rivers is the next destination on this motorbike expedition to North East. Take the adventure to the next level by engaging in river rafting in Pasighat, the oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh. The 120-km ride from Pasighat to Roing is one of the toughest sections of this journey as it will take you on unpaved tracks, mud sections and dry river beds. Spend the next day in Chowkham, and then move to Dibrugarh with a small stop in Digboi. The latter features the oldest operational oil refinery anywhere on earth. You may just get a glimpse of the one-horned rhinoceros when you take an elephant ride in Kaziranga National Park. In the last leg of this excursion, ride to Guwahati and disperse.

Day 01: Arrival in Guwahati On arrival in Guwahati, meet our representative and transfer to the hotel. Utilise the time to run system checks on your bikes, and get briefed about the upcoming events of the motorbike expedition to Assam, Arunachal, Nagaland. Later, enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 02: Guwahati to Tezpur (approx. 180 km) Move out of Guwahati, and cross the Brahmaputra River via the Saraighat bridge on the way to Tezpur. Most of the journey is on smooth, well-paved highways, and this presents a good opportunity to get used to the weather of the region and the peculiarities of your bikes. On reaching Tezpur, transfer to your lodging for an overnight stay.

Day 03 Tezpur to Dirang Valley (approx. 195 km) While biking from Tezpur to the Dirang Valley, stop at the Bhalukpong check gate. This is where you cross the state border and enter Arunachal Pradesh. Your official government permit, necessary to head deeper into the state, will be checked here, and the shops in the area are perfect to buy consumables. Upon resuming the trip, pass a few small towns, including Tenga and Bomdila while travelling towards the Dirang Valley. The latter is a mesmerising region, with forested mountains surrounding it and the Dirang River flowing through. On reaching here, transfer to your lodging for an overnight stay.

Day 04: Dirang Valley to Tawang (approx. 195 km) The destination for today is Tawang town, which is located in the western part of Arunachal Pradesh. Situated at an altitude of almost 10000 feet, the famous hill station is quite close to the India-China and India-Bhutan borders. En route this town, cross Sela Pass, which is at an altitude of about 13700 feet connects Tawang to the rest of the country. From the pass, follow the descending road that contains numerous hairpin bends to a valley, and then start ascending. On reaching the destination, transfer to your lodging and enjoy an overnight stay.

Day 05: Tawang – Sangetsar Lake – Tawang Monastery – Tawang  This phase of the motorbike expedition to Assam, Arunachal, Nagaland takes you to the mesmerising Sangetsar Lake. Formed after a flash flood, which occurred in the year 1973, this waterbody has now become a major point of interest for tourists. On your way to the lake, pass several other waterbodies of the area. Also during the journey, reach the highest altitude you touch on this tour that is about 14500 feet. If there is time, a visit to Tawang Monastery may also be organised. Tawang gompa is the largest such site in India, and the second largest in the world. Post the visit, return to the lodging for an overnight stay.

Day 06: Tawang to Bomdila (approx. 240 km) Travelling on the same route, through which you rode earlier, head towards Bomdila, located beyond the Dirang Valley. At an altitude of over 7000 feet, it is a small town, offering sights of spellbinding landscape and snow-capped mountain peaks of the Great Himalayan Range. On reaching Bomdila, transfer to your lodging and enjoy a rejuvenating sleep.

Day 07: Bomdila to Nameri (Approx. 125 km) Riding down from Bomdila, enter the state of Assam, and reach the camping property in the vicinity of Nameri National Park. You can take a rejuvenating walk along the Kameng River or just rest in their ecological tents. Later, enjoy a relaxing sleep in your tents.

Day 08: Nameri to Ziro (approx. 300 km) Driving for about 200 km on National Highway 52, end the easy part of biking, and then continue on the road through the forests of Arunachal Pradesh after entering it yet again. On reaching Ziro, transfer to your lodging and enjoy an overnight stay.

Day 09: Ziro to Daporijo (approx. 170 km) This leg of the tour will entail a long, tough ride on narrow winding roads, so make sure that you have rested enough at night. Meandering through an even thicker forest than the previous day, continue towards Daporijo. Also during this road trip, pass the villages of the animist tribes of the state. On reaching Daporijo, move to your lodging for an overnight stay.

Day 10: Daporijo to Along (160 km) The venture now transports you to Along, a small market town near the confluence of the Sipu and Siyom Rivers. It has also become a popular travel destination owing to some awe-inspiring views of the verdant hills that it offers. On reaching here, transfer to the lodging for an overnight stay.

Days 11: Along to Pasighat (approx. 95 km) This is going to be a relatively shorter day of driving than others on the trip. Travel along the Brahmaputra River, and make your way to Pasighat, one of the oldest towns in Arunachal Pradesh. Situated in the East Siang district, it was established by the British in the year 1911. On reaching Pasighat, enjoy a relaxing overnight stay in the campsite on the banks of the stream.

Day 12: Pasighat to Roing (120 km) In this section of the motorbike expedition to North East, leave Pasighat and head to Roing. Riding towards your destination, traverse the watershed area of the Brahmaputra River. Also, go past some villages, inhabited by the Adi and Idu Mishmi ethnic groups. Further ahead, cross the Dibang River and some other small streams that flow through this region. Dry river beds, fords, mud sections and unpaved tracks make the drive challenging and exciting. On reaching Roing, transfer to your lodging to enjoy a rejuvenating sleep.

Day 13: Roing to Dibrugarh (approx. 150 km) During this stretch of the motorbike expedition to North East, drive to Dibrugarh. Popularly known as the Tea City of India, Dibrugarh is spread over an area of about 25.5 sq km and is one of the largest cities in Northeast India. While on the way to here, make a small stop in the town of Digboi. Established in 1901, the oldest operational oil refinery in the world is located here. On reaching Dibrugarh, transfer to your lodging and enjoy a rejuvenating sleep.

Days 14: Dibrugarh to Kaziranga ( approx. 250 km) In the morning, leave Dibrugarh and follow National Highway 37 towards Kaziranga National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the most well-known wildlife hotspots of India. On arrival here, take an elephant ride to witness the various animals and floral species of the region. Complete the adventure with a Jeep ride, and if you are lucky, then you might just get a glimpse of the rare one-horned rhinoceros. The overnight stay for today and the following day is arranged in the Kaziranga National Park area itself.

Day 15: Kaziranga to Guwahati ( approx. 190 km ) Continuing the North East motor bike expedition on National Highway 37 along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, move to Guwahati. This is where this amazing trip started, and this is where it is going to end. The ride is easy and on the 4-lane well-built roads, allowing the experience to culminate smoothly. On reaching Guwahati, disperse and move to your next destination.

6 Top India Motorcycle Tour Destinations and Tours

High Altitude Mountains, Beaches and Desert

north east india cycle tour

Not surprisingly, motorcycle tours in India are growing in popularity, as the country's vast and varied terrain holds great appeal to motorcycle enthusiasts. Initially, most motorcycle tours were lead by foreign organizers. However, in recent years, numerous Indian companies have formed and started running these tours as well. Local knowledge, coupled with innovative routes and reasonable rates, make these tours excellent options. Discover six of the best destinations and tours in this article.

If you have your own motorcycle, a trip along Maharashtra's Konkan Coast from Mumbai to Tarkarli (or beyond to Goa) is also popular.

Delhi-Chandigarh-Manali-Leh

Northern India, especially around the Ladakh region , is undoubtedly the most popular destination for motorcycle tours in India. The route there, to what feels like the top of the world, will take you through dramatic changes in scenery -- starting out from hectic Delhi , to planned city Chandigarh, followed by the lush mountains around Manali , then ascending up the barren landscape to Leh. Many people choose just to do the Manali-Leh stretch. However, one company that will take you all the way is Mumbai-based Ride of My Life.

Ride of My Life offers a range of eight to 13 day premium and luxury tours , for both Indians and foreigners, to Leh and beyond (the Nubra Valley, and Pangong Tso including Chang La, the world's second highest motorable pass at 17,800 feet). The tours operate from June to August, and are conduced using 500cc Royal Enfield motorcycles in mint condition. The two owners are passionate motorcyclists who have also founded a non-profit organization to encourage more people to take up motorcycle travel, and made award-winning documentaries about their motorcycle journeys to remote parts of India.

North East India

North East India , with its meandering roads (many of which are in challenging condition) and its abundant natural beauty, provides an appealing landscape for motorcycle tours. Numerous companies offer motorcycle tours throughout the North East region. However, the personal attention provided by Anuj Singh and Shahwar Hussain of Chain Reaction has become quite renowned. This duo are a photographer, and an automotive journalist and travel writer. They've been riding together as a team, doing adventure motorcycle travel stories, for many years.

Chain Reaction has 17 and 21 day tours that will take you through Kazaranga National Park , the tea estates of Assam , Arunachal Pradesh and Tawang Monastery , tribal Nagaland , and misty Meghalaya to the remarkable root bridges of Cherrapunji.

India's desert state of Rajasthan , full of old forts and palaces, always holds special appeal for tourists. You'll share rustic roads with camel and buffalo carts as you make your way through colorful villages and explore regal cities.

Aboriginal Motorcycle Adventures Tours offers a 22 day Jumbo Rajasthan Tour, which starts from Delhi and does a loop through top destinations including Jaipur , Mandawa , Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur , Udaipur , Bundi, and Ranthambore National Park . A stop at Agra to see the Taj Mahal is also part of the tour. If you don't want to spend so long on a motorbike, shorter 14 day Rajasthan tours are also available. The Indian husband and wife team that owns and operates Aboriginal Motorcycle Adventures Tours are avid adventure travelers. Atul Bhardwaj gave up retail business ownership to pursue his passion for motorcycle touring, and aims to provide honest, value for money tours, which he leads himself.

Are you a woman who loves to ride? Indian Rides offers this 16-day women-only guided motorcycle group tour through Rajasthan.

Tropical, laid back Kerala , will delight you with a combination of beaches and backwaters, spice estates, and scenic hill stations. The pace of life there is slow and unchanged for decades -- people still make their own spices and catch their own fish.

Royal Bike Riders offers a 13 day Golden Beaches and Spices motorcycle tour through parts of Kerala and neighboring Tamil Nadu. The company is a young and dedicated Delhi-based team who aim to make motorcycle touring fun. What stands out is their flexibility -- they offer both fixed departure and customized trips. The team puts a lot of effort into designing itineraries and selecting routes that are still relatively unexplored, yet offer an exciting blend of adventure, culture, and attractive accommodations. Go on their Kerala tour and you'll even be able to take a motorbike ride along the beach!

Also check out the epic 1,400 kilometer Spice Route Tour by Indian Rides. It goes down the Kerala coast from Kochi to Alleppey, then inland all the way up to Pondicherry and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Coast

If you love the coast, you shouldn't miss cruising along the picturesque and smooth East Coast Road, from Chennai to Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu . It invitingly hugs the seashore. Chennai-based Date a Bike offers an easy overnight private trip . It's possible to rent luxury bikes, including Harley Davidsons, from them.

The Royal Riders offers a 13 Day South India Tour that starts in Pondicherry and takes the coastal route down to Kanyakumari (the most southern tip of India) and up the coast to Varkala in Kerala before heading back inland. You can choose from various shorter three and six day tours in Tamil Nadu as well. The team consists of a group of eclectic guys, including two from France and one from Spain, who all live in Pondicherry. Their trips don't follow the tourist trail, but rather their favorite routes discovered throughout years of riding adventures.

Rann of Kutch, Gujarat

Claude Renault/Getty Images

Want to get off the well-beaten tourist trail? The spectacular barren rural countryside of Gujarat's Kutch region is often referred to as India's "Wild West." Much of it consists of sprawling seasonal wetlands, incorporating the haunting white salt desert of the Great Rann of Kutch and smaller Little Rann of Kutch (famous for its Wild Ass Sanctuary ).

The Dream Riders, based in Ahmedabad, have come up with a Rann of Kutch Ride with premium and deluxe options and lengths of four or six days. There are frequent departures from November to January, and the ride is quite easy. The company has been in business organizing adventurous guided motorbike tours across India since 2009.
