Your Ultimate Off-Season Travel Calendar

Everybody loves a summer holiday, but more often than not, traveling during the peak tourist season can be a bit of a drag. Here’s our guide to your off-season gems to discover.

off season to travel

Summer may be the best time to travel when it comes to the weather, especially in Europe. However… the flights you want to book are overpriced, the places you want to stay at are more expensive, and the attractions you want to visit are flooded with tourists. In the off-season, you don’t have to worry about dealing with any of those downsides. Sure, you won’t get the best weather, but booking your trip in the low season comes with a bevy of benefits: cheaper airfare, wallet-friendly hotel rates, and fewer crowds.

If you’re ready to jump on the off-peak travel bandwagon, the only question left to answer is: where should I go in the off-season? That’s where this guide comes in! We’ve curated a list of some of the most popular travel destinations and their corresponding low-season periods so you can start planning your off-peak adventure for 2023 and beyond!

For the most part, Europe’s off-season runs between November and March .

Of course, temperatures and weather conditions will vary by region; if you visit in, say, December, you may have to contend with freezing temperatures and snow flurries in Northern Europe, while Mediterranean countries like Greece offer a fair amount of sunshine and relatively mild temperatures.

No matter what destinations you choose to visit (aside from ski resorts), you’re guaranteed to find fewer crowds and bargain-worthy prices when traveling to Europe during the winter months.

Here are a few great cities, countries, and regions to choose from for off-season travel — those places where you’ll get the most bang for your buck and have a fantastic overall experience:

  • All of the continent’s most popular and iconic cities (e.g., Venice, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, or Amsterdam)
  • Finnish Lapland

Southeast Asia – June to October

As you can imagine, Southeast Asia plays host to several climates to match its incredibly diverse landscapes. Many travelers avoid the off-season in this region completely, but — with a little extra planning and preparation — it can actually be a fantastic time to travel here.

Just remember: the off-season months typically coincide with the rainy season. Monsoon rains usually occur between June and October in most parts of Southeast Asia, but weather patterns can vary drastically depending on the destination.

During this time, your trip can be disrupted by torrential downpours, or you might get lucky with sunshine and short-lived periods of rain — it’s a chance you take traveling during the low season!

Here are the off-season months for some of Southeast Asia’s top hotspots:

  • Bali – April to June
  • Bangkok and Northern Thailand – May to October
  • Thai Islands (Gulf of Thailand) – Gulf of Thailand October to December and the Andaman Sea June to October
  • Vietnam – May to September
  • Cambodia – July to September

Japan / China / Taiwan – November to March

The best time to escape the crowds in China , Japan , and Taiwan is during the winter months, as long as you’re not traveling to wintry destinations or ski towns like Harbin and Hokkaido. As these destinations are pretty far north, it can get quite cold, however, so for trips to Tokyo, Seoul, or Beijing, your best bet is to dress for the occasion and check the weather reports thoroughly.

India & Sri Lanka – May to August/September

India and Sri Lanka experience varied weather conditions, with certain regions (such as Goa, for example) being dominated by rainfall at any given time of the year.

With the exception of tropical states like Florida and Hawaii, the low season in Canada and the USA falls between the winter months of November and March/April.

Los Angeles, Vancouver, and other West Coast destinations offer milder temperatures throughout this season, while cities in the northeast (New York, Toronto, Boston) transform into real-life winter wonderlands.

Prices skyrocket during winter holidays and school holiday periods, so it’s best to avoid Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Spring Break if you don’t want to deal with inflated hotel rates and crowded attractions.

In Mexico and the Caribbean , the off-season period begins shortly after Easter and lasts until the middle of December, just before the holiday season is in full swing.

  • United States – November to March
  • Hawaii – April to early June and September to mid-December
  • Canada – November to April
  • Mexico – May to mid-December
  • The Caribbean – May to mid-December

Given its gargantuan size, it should come as no surprise that there’s a whole host of varying climates and microclimates occurring on this vast continent throughout the year.

Generally speaking, South America can be divided into two regions, the first being Chile , Argentina , Uruguay , and southern Brazil, where the low season falls during the chilly winter months. Please be aware that here, it’s winter from May to August! The other region is Colombia , Peru , Ecuador , and Bolivia , where the weather patterns are dictated by wet and dry seasons rather than significant temperature changes. In Brazil, for example, there may be temperatures as low as ° C 15.8 / ° F 60.4 in Foz do Iguaçu, in the south in July, while Salvador, Bahia up north will still have approx. ° C 23.7 / ° F 74.7 degrees.

If you don’t mind packing a few extra layers and waterproof gear, you’ll love traveling outside of peak season here.

  • Colombia / Peru / Ecuador / Bolivia – December to March
  • Mach u Picchu – October to February (The Inca Trail closes every February for essential maintenance.)
  • The Galapagos Islands – May to June and September and October
  • Brazil – May to September
  • Chile and Argentina (excluding Patagonia) – June to August

In many African destinations (especially safari hotspots), low-season travel comes with loads of perks: the Kalahari Desert offers fantastic game viewing during the off-season; the low season in Kenya means better deals and cheaper international airfare; and Tanzania’s birthing period falls during the off-peak months, so you’re more likely to see lion cubs and other baby animals.

Plus, you’ll get great value for money, you won’t have to compete for space at wildlife sightings, and the rainy season brings lush landscapes — which makes for excellent photo opportunities.

It may be wetter during the low season, but if you can bear a bit of rain, there are a number of fantastic benefits that come with off-peak travel on this continent.

North Africa

  • Morocco – November to February
  • Egypt – June to August

Central/East Africa

  • Kenya & Tanzania – March to June and October to December
  • Ugand a – April and May
  • Rwanda – April, May, and November

Southern Africa

  • South Africa – April to September
  • Namibia & Botswana – December to April
  • Moz ambique – March to June

Australia – June to August

Most people want to experience summer Down Under, but visiting during Australia’s winter (June to August) will save you cash on everything from your airfare to tours and bucket list activities.

And, since the weather is still pleasant and warm in many places around the country, choosing to travel during the off-season comes with some serious advantages.

New Zealand – June to August

The off-peak winter season is similar in New Zealand : you’ll find far fewer crowds at all the popular tourist spots (besides the ski resorts dotted around the country, of course).

Prices go down; hotel rates drop, and, in some destinations, you might feel as though you have the whole place to yourself.

Things to consider when booking an off-season holiday

Not every destination is suited to off-season travel; you definitely don’t want to be trekking in the Himalayas in a foot of snow or sweltering in Northern Australia in 45-degree heat.

You’ll have to weigh the pros and cons and do some additional research before you travel to any particular destination during the low season. Weather, seasonal closures, and safety are three of the main things to keep in mind while you’re planning your trip.

Our Most Popular Off-Season Travel Destinations (+ When to Visit)

by Brandi Gannon Nov 2, 2023

Off-season travel in Maravilla, Costa Rica

While summer and holidays may be the conventional vacation times, exploring off-season travel can be a game changer if you prefer avoiding the crowds.

It’s the perfect chance to explore popular destinations when most visitors have dispersed. Plus, off-season travel gives you the opportunity to discover unique experiences that are often overshadowed (or are very expensive!) during peak seasons.

Here are some of our favorite places to visit in the off-season, when to plan your vacation, and what to do during your stay.

Visit Europe – Especially Paris – During November or From January Through March

Paris - Arc de Triomphe

Tourists flock to cities all over Europe in the spring and summer, and Paris is no exception. Visiting almost any other time of the year means fewer crowds, better hotel and flight prices, and shorter lines to see landmarks like the Louvre.

However, we’d also recommend skipping December. Visiting Paris during the holidays is an incredible experience that’s worth planning at least once, but if you aren’t a fan of crowds, it can be pretty stressful.

As long as you pack a warmer wardrobe, Paris in winter has all the magic of Paris in summer with less hassle!

You can lace up your skates and glide across the ice at one of the temporary ice rinks set up around the city during the winter season. While some are only around in December, others can be found well into March – like the most popular rink found in front of the Hôtel de Ville.

Winter is the perfect time to savor rich, hearty, traditional French cuisine. Treat yourself to classic dishes like coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon, or a comforting bowl of French onion soup. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a glass of Bordeaux wine or Champagne! The city is also known for its charming cafés, and winter is a great time to get cozy and indulge in a warm beverage.

Rhine River Gorge - European River Cruising

If you’d like to visit more than just Paris, planning a river cruise on the Rhine offers fantastic value with the option to see multiple European cities on one luxury cruise. One of our Travel Advisors, Kelly, recently did a Rhine River cruise and shared all the details. Read more about her AmaWaterways experience here !

Lastly, keep in mind that the off-season travel period doesn’t just apply to Paris. Most of Europe is less touristy in the fall and winter, and you may find temperatures in the southern cities much more pleasant than in the warmer months.

Enjoy Off-Season Travel in the Caribbean in Late April Through Early June

Off-season Travel - Jamaica All Inclusive Vacations

Off-season travel in the Caribbean reveals a quieter, more authentic side of the area, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local charm and experience the region at their own pace.

When the temperatures get cooler in the United States, that’s when most people escape to the beautifully warm water of the Caribbean. Luckily, temperatures remain relatively stable year-round, so you’re not missing out if you visit in the summer.

One important factor to note is that the least-busy months are actually late June through September, but that’s because it’s also peak hurricane season. Visiting in late April through early June lets you skip most of the winter and spring break crowds while still staying safe.

Here are some popular vacation destinations and what to do when you visit!

Jamaica – Explore the majestic Blue Mountains, discover Jamaica’s delectable cuisine, visit a bioluminescent bay, and check out some local music festivals. You’ll have plenty of all-inclusive resorts to choose from during your stay!

The Dominican Republic – Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial, take advantage of the calm waters and enjoy some watersports, or hike to Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean.

Cancun – Discover the ancient Mayan civilization by visiting nearby archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza, Tulum, or Coba. The off-season is also a great time to visit Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve or take a boat trip to Isla Contoy. And of course, the cenotes and beautiful beaches can’t be missed!

St. Lucia – St. Lucia is famous for its iconic twin peaks, the Pitons. Take advantage of the off-season to hike Gros Piton or Petit Piton for breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the Caribbean Sea! Visit crowd-free, secluded beaches and schedule a zipline tour for aerial views of the rainforest.

Plan a Trip to Mexico Year-Round – Depending on the Location!

Xochimilco

While popular destinations in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula generally follow the same travel patterns as the rest of the Caribbean, other parts of the country are a little different. Here’s a quick guide on Mexico’s other popular destinations and when to visit for fewer crowds.

  • Visit Huatulco and Oaxaca in April, May, September and October – These months offer milder temperatures that make exploration a lot more pleasant. The only thing to note here is that late October and early November can get crowded during the Día de Muertos celebration (but experiencing the holiday is definitely worth the crowds in this case)! Consider staying in Dreams Huatulco Resort & Spa .
  • Visit Mexico City in January through September – Mexico City will always be busy (it’s the second largest city in Latin America after all!), but you can avoid a lot of the crowds by skipping the holiday celebrations that take place in the latter part of the year. It’s important to note that winter nights can get pretty chilly, so pack appropriately!
  • Visit the state of Chiapas in December, January or June – While it may be a little more rainy, the popular city of San Cristobal de las Casas is no less magical during the off season!
  • Visit Los Cabos from June through September – If you’re planning to experience the area’s famous whale watching excursions, you may have to brave the high season crowds (October through May). However, if you’re there to explore and relax, the off season is the perfect time for it.

Plan a National Park Vacation From September Through May

Great Falls in Yellowstone

When most people think of visiting national parks , images of crowded trails, long lines, and packed parking lots come to mind. However, during the off-season – typically fall, winter, and early spring – these destinations transform into serene wilderness areas where you can experience nature in a whole new light.

Accommodation and entrance fees may be more affordable during the off-season, making a national park adventure more budget-friendly. Also, popular attractions that might have been fully booked in the summer could be easier to access without big crowds.

And aside from lower costs, there are other great reasons to take a national park vacation in the off season.

  • With fewer visitors around, wildlife tends to be more active and visible. It’s easier to spot animals (or even interesting plant life) without the interference of bustling crowds. The off-season provides a better chance to witness animals in their natural habitats.
  • While the off-season might bring about cooler temperatures and the occasional snowfall, it also offers a chance to witness landscapes transformed by winter. Glistening snow-covered peaks, frozen waterfalls, and mist-shrouded valleys create a unique atmosphere that can’t be replicated during the peak months.
  • Speaking of winter landscapes, national parks in the off season are a photographer’s dream!

No matter which park or season you plan to visit, one of the best ways to tour a national park is by taking advantage of an RV vacation rental service . Let us know if you’d like some help planning a trip!

16 Best Off-Season Travel Destinations For 2024

' src=

Traveling to major tourist destinations in the offseason is the best! Why? Because you can experience all the major sights without having to elbow other tourists and save loads of money as well.

Imagine experiencing no queues at the dinner tables, buying flight tickets for half the price, and not waiting for 7 hours to get into a museum. During peak season all these things can make you hate traveling while you silently wish for all the tourists to just disappear.

Smart travelers know how to avoid crowds and that’s what we are here for. Presenting you some of the best places in the world to have your amazing vacation without millions of people fighting with you for the perfect photo of the main attraction. Are you excited? We are as well, so let’s get started!

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany is a real dreamland in summer. However, this season of the year brings higher hotel costs and a slew of travelers.

As experienced travelers know, this famous Italian wine region is beautiful at any time of the year. In fact, the region’s rich and famous vineyards and local cuisine are best enjoyed in winter.

Tuscany is also known as a cultural destination because of its art and history, and you do not need the sun to appreciate these components of their culture.

The walled medieval villages of Montepulciano, San Gimignano and Pienza are even more pleasant to visit in the off-season because there are no crowds.

But Tuscany also has an adventurous side. Other activities you can do in Tuscany are,

  • Going for a long hike in the mountains.
  • Renting a Vespa and running through the countryside
  • Visiting naturally formed hot springs – Popular hot springs are Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo, Petriolo, and Saturnia.

St. Lucia – The sun-soaked Caribbean

off season to travel

The hotels, attractions, and restaurants will be heavily booked and more expensive than in the offseason, so make sure that you reserve everything in advance.

June through November (The Caribbean’s hurricane periods ) are better if you want to avoid high prices and crowded beaches.

Prices on airline tickets and hotels drop for as much as 50% so this is the perfect opportunity to take advantage off. There doesn’t exist a person in the world that doesn’t enjoy the Carribean so don’t miss out on an experience of a lifetime.

Visit Fiji During Low Season!

off season to travel

Fiji is a pleasant tropical destination perfect for an excursion during any time of the year. Although this utopian island Shangri-la doesn’t have any discernible “seasons”, there are certain periods of time during which more or fewer people choose to visit this incredible place.

Fiji’s “wet” or “low” season can be just as inviting as the “high” season when tourism is at its peak.

During the months of November through late April , you’ll be able to catch much cheaper flights and score completely affordable lodging, all while not sacrificing any of the sunshine you’d normally expect to experience here, and simultaneously beating the crowds.

off season to travel

These are some of the perfect months to plan a visit for, especially if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing trip for Adults. The swimming pools and beaches won’t be nearly as congested, and since school is in session, there won’t be as many noisy children to kill your vibe.

Christmas break is one of the only times during the winter months where you’ll find kids running about. Falling within the first couple of months of the low season, this is the perfect time to bring the kids for the ultimate family getaway during the holidays.

All in all, if you’re craving a bit of the island life during the winter months, Fiji is a must for you.

A Sub-Tropical Getaway During Hurricane Season? Yes.

off season to travel

Florida gets a bad rap during the months of August and September and as a direct result, vacations here can be much more affordable during this time.

Over 20 million people live, stay, and enjoy the state every year during the tourist dreaded “hurricane” season, when in fact hurricanes aren’t nearly as common as you’d think.

Prior to 2016, Florida hadn’t seen a hurricane make landfall in over 11 years. That all came to an end in September 2016, when Hurricane Hermine touched the coast and shortly thereafter, weakened into a tropical storm. In 2018, Florida saw the effects of Hurricane Michael along the panhandle. Although this may be enough to scare some people away during these months, you can take advantage of the cheap airfare and lodging prices. That being said, It’s always best to choose to be prepared for the unlikely, yet potentially extreme situations if they do so happen to arise.

Depending on where you are in The Sunshine State, you can anticipate rain showers for an hour or so nearly every afternoon, especially on the coast. Although this is true, it usually tends to clear up fast and things are bright, sunny, and back to normal in no time.

Purchase traveler’s insurance! This is a great option for anyone traveling under any circumstance, and it would be a smart move for someone visiting Florida during this time period.

Check with your airlines, hotels, etc. to confirm how they advise their guests of any potential dangers. Also, you can stay ahead of the game by downloading weather advisory apps to your smartphone and checking the hurricane and tropical storm information websites.

With this information at your fingertips, it’s up to you if you’re willing to make the decision to travel here during the off-season season, but if you do, you just might find yourself having the time of your life.

New Zealand – Travelling in Off Seasons

off season to travel

In the offseason, everything is cheaper and in spring and fall, everything is stunning. The winter is perfect if you love skiing and snowboarding.

During the off-season, you will also have the opportunity to meet locals and you can afford to be more impulsive and not have everything booked in advance. New Zealand has a good reputation all over the world, so booking a vacation there is not a bad idea. Nature is stunning and every sporty person loves the array of activities in New Zealand.

Greek Islands – The land of sightseeing

off season to travel

Yes, in the off-season you’ll miss the Mykonos nightfall, but in March still, visitors can enjoy Santorini and Athens sights with no regrets.

During this time hotel and travel prices drop largely. That’s why travelers should plan to visit it in the offseason.

Experience the amazing greek culture and food, have fun on the beach or dance sirtaki with the locals. Greece should be on everyone’s to-do list. If you haven’t been there yet, what are you waiting for? Take advantage of its off-season prices and have a trip of a lifetime.

The Bahamas – The Country without fall season

off season to travel

Anyhow there is no bad time to visit the Bahamas because of year-round it’s always delightfully warm.

Tourist attractions are bustling during the high season so if you want to book a cheap excursion, have no crowds and see more with less go there in the offseason. You will fall in love with the place and will yearn to return to it once again in the future.

San Francisco – Land of four distinct seasons

san francisco- off season travel

The best time to visit is from September to Novembe r , at that time it is the warmest and there are fewer tourists than in the summer.

It also is the perfect time to go to the beach because of its constantly sunny skies but don’t underestimate the bayside breezes and pack accordingly just in case.

Spring is also nice because there is not much rain. San Francisco definitely is one of the gems of America and you should definitely not miss out on it if you travel to the USA . It’s culture and tradition definitely made a mark in the history of the USA.

New Orleans – Enjoying Mardi Gras

new orleans - off season destination

New Orleans is known for its crazy Carnival ( Shrove Tuesday ) celebration which starts just after Christmas. At that time it is really crowded but it is well worth it and you should book everything a couple of months in advance otherwise it might get sold out.

The winter is the perfect time to avoid the crowds, get amazing deals on flight tickets and cheap hotels. December and January are the coldest months so pack accordingly.

If the weather is more important to you, then we recommend you go there in spring or fall. In spring the prices increase for quite a bit but the city becomes marvelous as it gets warmer. We know you will love New Orleans and look back on the memories you have made there with joy.

Cape Cod – The Summer destination gem

off season to travel

There’s immense satisfaction in exploring Cape Cod during the winter time. Expert voyagers can try hiking and biking to experience the full fun of the period between October and November.

You also don’t have to wait to for a plate of seafood on the table and the meals are extremely cheap. In autumn, travelers can explore Wellfleet Oysterfest to get a taste of the local culture.

Costa Rica -Travelling in Green Seasons

off season to travel

When crowds have gone back to schools and to work, smart tourists can start packing to get a better deal. The rain and clouds create beautiful green landscapes and transparent waterfalls throughout the downtime.

Enjoy pleasant moments in nature and find joy in the afternoon rain while resting in a hammock. How could you not enjoy that, Costa Rica definitely is a must go in the offseason. Nature is beautiful, people are friendly and the prices are low, seems like the perfect package.

Florence – The City with full of crowd

off season to travel

In the off-season, the crowds are gone entirely. The downtime starts in November and ends with Easter. Vacationers can get pleasure from rainy evenings and connect with locals all throughout the season. Except for Christmas and New Year eve, the prices go down for almost a half which is amazing for budget-oriented travelers.

You will definitely not regret visiting Florence in the offseason and you will be completely amazed at the beauty of the Renaissance architecture.

Italian culture is something you have to experience and their cuisine is something you won’t ever forget. What are you waiting for, book your flight tickets to Florence right now!.

Bali -The Romantic Honeymoon destination

off season to travel

Everything turns green at that time so you will definitely enjoy the scenery. You will be the only person visiting the sights so it will be perfect for taking photos for Instagram. Traffic is also non-existent in those months. Bali has been referred to as the paradise on earth, so it must be amazing. It is perfect for reconnecting with yourself and experiencing the world on a deeper level. Go to Bali and experience it yourself!

There is plenty of things TO DO in Bali  and you won’t know what to do first, even when visiting in low / rainy season.

Byron Bay, Australia

off season to travel

Though Byron is popular throughout the year, there are exciting things to explore in the offseason. The beginning of wintertime is awesome because it isn’t too cold to swim but surfing becomes way more enjoyable. Spring from September to November is also amazing.

Why? The weather is dry, the temperatures are pleasant, the prices go down and there are countless activities you can do. Australia is on most of the people’s bucket lists, we think it is time for you to cross it of yours! Though the country has a very strict decree for hunters, they’re allowed to take part in Red Deer hunt game throughout the year.

So an opportunist won’t miss the chance to take part in such a thrilling game with his best binoculars for hunting and will make his/her journey more meaningful.

Prague, Czech Republic

off season to travel

Spring and early fall are perfect as well. The climate is chillier than in the warmer summer months but there are fewer crowds and cheaper hotel rates. Spring and fall, however, offer clear skies and sunny weather.

Cape Town, South Africa

The secret to a budget-friendly trip? Travel during the off-season. You may have to make a few sacrifices, but at half the cost and without all the crowds, off-season travel is worth considering. From the European vacation you’ve been dreaming about to that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa , check out these off-season destinations for every month of the year.

January – Barcelona

off season to travel

As one of the most popular destinations in the world, Barcelona is never completely free of tourists. Nonetheless, strategically planning your trip in the off-season could be in your best interest. January sits between the major holidays of Christmas and Easter, and city streets, restaurants, and Gaudí’s buildings will be less clogged than normal. Temperatures will also be relatively mild, so you can still plan on sipping Rioja on the terrace as long as you pack a jacket.

February – New York City

off season to travel

If you’re dreaming of a weekend getaway to Manhattan, a trip in February will do quite nicely. As long as you steer clear of Valentine’s Day, you’ll find cheaper accommodations and more affordable flights in the winter. You’ll likely have to bundle up to go outside, but that just means you’re tough like a New Yorker. For the Big Apple’s greatest hits, visit the Museum of Natural History and MoMA , catch a show on Broadway, stroll through snowy Central Park, and grab a New York slice.

March – Amalfi Coast

off season to travel

If you’re in need of a quiet respite by the sea, visit the Amalfi Coast in March. The early spring on the Italian seaside is pleasant and slow with many hotels and restaurants closed for the season. Not all the coastal towns are completely dead, however, and with a little planning, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. The good news? Without the on-season crowds, the coastline’s famous winding roads will be easier to navigate and the area’s gorgeous hiking trails will be yours to explore.

April – Colorado

off season to travel

April is the start of a little thing called “mud season” in Colorado, which truly isn’t as bad as it may sound. If you stick to the low-lying Colorado plains in cities like Denver and Fort Collins, you won’t feel the effects as much. In fact, you’ll likely enjoy some sunshine and warmer weather to explore these vibrant cities. Head towards the mountains, however, and you’ll begin to notice the effects of spring snowmelt. If you're looking for skiing or hiking, this won't be your season. Depending on the snowpack, Colorado ski resorts typically close in early-to-mid April. What this does mean, however, is you can find some great deals on accommodations and spa treatments, so you can still enjoy a relaxing weekend away.

May – Alaska

off season to travel

If your schedule can swing it, May is a great time to make that coveted trip to Alaska. The weather may be cooler, but it’s also a lot drier with fewer rain showers than the rest of the summer. While it’s not the cheapest time to visit (that would be November and December), it is less crowded than June, July, and August. May is also a good time to see wildlife in its natural habitat. From bears on the first salmon run to humpback whales near Juneau , the Alaskan wildlife should be out and about for your viewing pleasure.

June – New Zealand

off season to travel

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere and don’t mind spending the start of your summer in a cool, rainy climate, then June in New Zealand is perfect for you. Marking the beginning of New Zealand’s winter, and smack-dab in the middle of its rainy season, you won’t get picture-perfect weather in June. However, you will get flights that are way more affordable, cheaper car and RV rentals, and discounted winter rates for lodging. June is also early ski season and while the snowpack may not be as reliable as July or August, the slopes will be open with fewer crowds and shorter lift lines.

July – South Africa

off season to travel

There’s no doubt that a South African safari is a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list kind of trip . Witnessing a pride of lions basking in the sun or watching an elephant sway past your jeep is the kind of travel we should all aspire to — thrilling, memorable, and a peek into a world we know nothing about. That being said, safaris are quite expensive and flights to South Africa aren’t cheap. If you’re ready to make the leap, however, July will keep your costs a bit lower. The colder, drier season means you’ll have to bundle up for those early dawn jeep rides, but it also has some perks. The bush will be brown and barren — making it easier to spot the “big five” while you’re there.

August - Goa

off season to travel

Goa's popular coastline clears out during monsoon season, transforming from a beach party to a quiet getaway in a matter of months. August is later in the rainy season, meaning it averages cooler temperatures (75 degrees Fahrenheit) and less rainfall (20 inches total). While this type of weather isn’t ideal for hitting up the beach, it does come with some major perks. Rooms in the touristy, upscale hotels are much more affordable and monsoon season is a great time for hikers to explore Goa’s inland forests. Plus, the added rainfall supercharges the region’s abundant waterfalls, adding some oomph to the already beautiful landscape.

September – Caribbean Islands

off season to travel

Looking for a cheap trip to the Caribbean ? Book during hurricane season. October is typically the stormiest month, so if you go a little earlier in August and September you still enjoy major price drops in flights and accommodations. If you’re willing to take the risk, you could luck out with fantastic weather and no crowds. If such a gamble isn’t your thing, consider a trip to the southern Caribbean to Aruba or Grenada, which lie outside the Hurricane Belt. Either way, don’t forget the trip insurance on this one.

October – Argentina

off season to travel

Considered to be shoulder season in South America, October is a gem of a month that isn’t as popular with the tourist set. Marking mid-spring for the Southern Hemisphere, the chill of winter has evaporated and the country’s greenery is beginning to emerge. Buenos Aires is especially lovely this time of year — the days are long, the temps are mild, and the flowers at the Palermo Rose Garden are in peak bloom. Farther south, Patagonia is just opening up from its winter hibernation, which means it will be less costly (and colder) than the popular summer months of January and February.

November – Hawaii

off season to travel

From volcanic hikes to waterfalls in the jungle, the Big Island’s diverse ecosystem is ripe for adventure. And since rainfall in the Pacific is typically higher in November, travel costs in Hawaii dip at this time of year. Don’t let the prospect of rainy season deter you, though. Temperatures are still warm and the rain showers are brief. The island’s two airports average different amounts of rainfall, so take note when planning your itinerary. Kona is more touristy but drier, while Hilo has a laid-back, local vibe and more rain.

December – Iceland

off season to travel

Off-season travel in December is a bit tricky since the holidays cause rates to spike later in the month. However, if you’re not averse to cold weather, this is a good time of year to make an Iceland trip. Between the vast, white lowlands and the snow-covered glaciers, Iceland’s arctic landscape was meant to be seen this time of year. Temps will hover in the 20s, but with the appropriate winter gear , you’ll still be able to explore Iceland’s many outdoor offerings. Plus, the lack of daylight and the dry weather make this the best time of year to spot the elusive Northern Lights .

If you listen too closely to conventional travel wisdom, you’re bound to have a conventional trip. That’s often a good thing.

According to travel experts, the answer is a resounding “yes.”

“I can certainly wax poetic on the benefits of off-season travel,” says Gary Portuesi, managing partner of Authentic Explorations . “Last summer, we sent out an email blast proclaiming November and December to be the best times to visit Italy. Isn’t it a nice idea to visit the Roman Forum in a jacket instead of trying to find shade while wiping the sweat off your brow? The ‘wrong’ time of year can yield lots of great benefits.”

Is it still worth bucking your travel agent’s advice? That’s up to you. But here’s a convincing look at five “wrong season” destinations packed with crowd-less “only-then” cultural celebrations and natural wonders.

Manta rays silhouetted by the sun in the Maldives

Peak season : November to April Off season : May to September

Last festive season, the Maldives saw a record number of private jets touch down in its atolls. Frequented in December for its postcard-perfect weather, thanks to climate change, it may no longer be so perfect.

Locals say the weather now is unpredictable, meaning travelers can see sunny skies in July and rain in January. So switching up the season here is starting to make sense.

Stay nearby at Soneva Fushi or Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru , where the marine team will give you a “Manta on Call” phone that rings as soon as they spot manta rays in the bay.

Water Battle (Songkran Festival in Chanthaburi)

Peak season : November to February Off season : April to October

In the north of Southeast Asia, January through April is known as burning season. Farmers slash and burn their land to prepare it for planting, creating harmful smoke and occasionally forest fires that carry across the region.

Although skies can look downright apocalyptic during this time, as the smoke peters out in April, a must-experience cultural festival happens throughout Thailand : Songkran, a.k.a. Thai New Year.

Beginning on April 13 of every year, the country stops for the biggest water festival on Earth. Arguably the world’s most joyous festival, Chiang Mai is the best place to partake in the party. Children and grandmas throwing buckets of icy cold water from pickup trucks that circle the city’s moat, spraying passersby with hoses and squirting water guns at each other for three days straight. It’s also a great way to cool down during the country’s hottest months.

The little lighthouse at Brant Point in Nantucket, Massachusetts

Peak season : June to September Off season : November to March

Nantucket is booming like never before in the summer, and no amount of lobster rolls and striped umbrellas can hide it. Housing is now so expensive and in such short supply that businesses have closed due to lack of local staff.

But in winter, when the year-round locals rule the roost, Nantucket becomes nostalgic. Like something straight out of a Hallmark movie, the island’s Main Street turns on the Christmas lights and the charm.

Panoramic view of city skyline and cityscape in Dubai UAE

Peak season : November to April Off season : June to September

Under the blazing desert’s summer sun Dubai gets a bit sluggish. Local pastimes include: drinking tea and coffee under fluorescent lighting in an air-conditioned shopping mall. No wonder, tourism dips when the sun shines brightest.

But in typical Dubai fashion, they aren’t going to let trivial facts like 110-degree temperatures get in the way of a booming economy.

To tempt the crowds, the city is promoting a “ Dubai Summer Surprises .” Running from the end of June to the beginning of September, its famous malls, over-the-top resorts, and entertainment venues are offering drool-worthy sales. Tax-free shopping, slashed designer prices, and ultra-competitive room rates are just the start.

Family-friendly activities are the other major emphasis and they roll out as part of the city’s Kids Go Free initiative. Little ones get free stays and food at nearly every hotel and free admission into the city’s coolest sites: like the View at The Palm , the Dubai Balloon , Legoland Water Park , and Reel Cinemas .

Just stay inside.

Tromso, Norway

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, Iceland

Peak season: December to March Off season: Spring and fall.

A winter trip to the Arctic Circle, where midnight darkness prevails 24/7, may seem tantamount to torture. But it’s actually the busiest season for this northern Norwegian town.

In Tromso, located at 69° North above the Arctic Circle, the pitch-black “polar nights” lasts for about six weeks. While it may mess with your circadian rhythm, this stunning island town still has something special to offer.

We bet you'll be surprised at what you find out and who knows, you may even be inspired to book a trip !

Sun Valley, Idaho

sun valley idaho

The Trailing of the Sheep Festival in Sun Valley, Idaho, is an annual event that pays homage to the area's sheep ranching heritage. Typically held in early October, the festival features the iconic Great Sheep Parade, where 1,500 sheep are herded through Ketchum's streets. Alongside this spectacle, the festival offers educational and cultural activities such as sheepdog trials, wool spinning and weaving demonstrations, storytelling and historical presentations on the local sheep ranching history. Visitors can also enjoy live music, delicious food, craft vendors, and film screenings related to sheep ranching and the region's history.

Stay at the Limelight Hotel in the heart of downtown, which offers comfortable rooms and suites with modern amenities. A fun perk of the hotel is that guests can rent an Audi from the front desk to take on an adventure outside of downtown, soak in hot springs or simply for a scenic drive.

St. Moritz, Switzerland

badrutts palace st moritz

While St. Moritz in Switzerland may be known for some of the best skiing in the world, the Alpine landscape transforms into a lush paradise during the summer months. Badrutt’s Palace conveniently sits on Lake St. Moritz for hiking, biking, watersports and more activities. Trust us, the view from your balcony is so picturesque that a picture won’t do it justice. Badrutt’s is a luxurious haven in every aspect, including its restaurants, spa and bar for a nightcap.

The property also has a restaurant, Paradiso , that guests can visit via ski lift and a short hike as it’s serenely nestled in the mountains overlooking the quaint town and landscape. With the local cuisine, drinks, views and even a Gucci Lounge , it’s definitely worth the trek.

Oahu, Hawaii

turtle bay resort oahu

Oahu's North Shore is a must-visit during the off-season. Book a stay at Turtle Bay Resort where you’ll spend your days lounging, surfing, golfing, and more. You can fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area's renowned beaches, especially during the peak of the big wave surfing season from November to February when the beaches aren't full of tourists. The North Shore also boasts lush landscapes , waterfalls, and outdoor adventures like hiking, horseback riding, and snorkeling. Staying at Turtle Bay Resort, with its oceanfront paradise and a range of activities, enhances your visit. It's the perfect opportunity to enjoy the North Shore's tranquil beauty, authentic Hawaiian atmosphere and thrilling surf culture.

Plus, you'll witness incredible surfers conquering massive waves and at Turtle Bay Resort, you can take surf lessons yourself with accomplished instructors. If the conditions permit, there’s a world-renowned surf competition called The Eddie Aikau that takes place every winter. With waves as large as 60 feet tall, the competition brings the best surfers from around the globe.

Lucca, Italy

lucca italy

Lucca is a place if you’re seeking an authentic Italian village that isn’t bustling with out-of-towners. Explore the city’s well-preserved medieval architecture where you can ride on top of the iconic city walls which is now a park that's perfect for a picnic. The best part about visiting off-season is the chance to immerse yourself even closer in local culture from the cuisine, people and supporting local businesses.

The Grand Universe Hotel , a historic and elegant property in the city center, can add a touch of luxury and convenience to your trip making it the perfect base for discovering Lucca and its surroundings. In the Symphony Lounge, the hotel offers a one-of-a-kind experience called the Prelude of Existence . During this unique session, a classical composer creates a personalized theme song based on your personality traits. The Prelude is presented in musical notes on paper, or you can choose to have it placed in a time capsule within a luxurious Tuscan leather box for a special keepsake.

Yasawa Islands, Fiji

yasawa islands fiji

Visiting the Yasawa Islands in Fiji during the wet season (January through March) provides a cost-effective and tranquil island getaway. Located on the west side of Fiji, this area is known as the drier side during the off-season. With lower accommodation and activity prices, you can enjoy this tropical paradise without straining your budget. The off-season also means fewer tourists, allowing you to savor the pristine beaches and landscapes in a more peaceful setting.

The pleasant weather coupled with fewer crowds makes it an ideal time for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving and hiking. If you’re looking to live in paradise on vacation, stay at VOMO Island Resort . This luxurious property located on a private island has over 255 acres to explore from sunrise to sunset.

Paris, France

paris france

Fall is the ideal time to explore Paris with fewer crowds, shorter days, and more importantly, affordable airfare. This is the perfect opportunity to indulge in the city's renowned art institutions. Starting on October 18, the Musée du Louvre will feature a historical treasury collection from Notre-Dame Cathedral , while from November 29, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs will showcase the work of avant-garde Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen.

For customizable travel plans, consider the authentically French airline French Bee , which conveniently flies into Paris' closest airport, Orly. Their Low Fare Calendars simplify tracking low fares, and they offer an "a la carte" mode with the Smart Economy ticket being the most popular choice. During October and November, fares start as low as $211 each way from New York to Paris. This might just be your sign to use your year-end PTO and take the trip!

Crystal Coast, North Carolina

coastal carolina

North Carolina's Crystal Coast is a gem year-round, but it truly sparkles during the shoulder season from mid-September to mid-May. With fewer tourists, visitors during this period can fully enjoy the tranquil beaches of Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach without the crowds. They also have the opportunity to engage with the locals, providing an authentic insight into the vibrant community that makes this destination exceptional. The ideal times to visit are the weeks before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, offering the same stunning weather but with significantly fewer crowds. Make sure to visit Shackleford Banks , where over 100 wild Spanish horses roam freely along the beach.

Stowe, Vermont

stowe vermont

Visiting Stowe, Vermont, during the off-season, including the "mud season," offers an experience that’s off-the-beaten-path. The scenic tranquility of the region in the transition from winter to spring is captivating, with green landscapes replacing the snow. Outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking become more enjoyable, and you can explore Stowe's attractions with fewer crowds.

During this period, reduced tourist numbers led to budget-friendly accommodations and dining options making it an economical time to visit. Stay at Topnotch Resort for a vacation to unplug from your busy schedule and enjoy the mountain views, local Vermont dishes, private spa lounges and more.

Big Sur, California

big sur california

Big Sur's off-season offers a quieter and more budget-friendly opportunity to experience this stunning coastal paradise. During this time, you'll find it much easier to secure coveted campsites and enjoy low rates at rustic inns and glamping accommodations. The reduced congestion along the iconic Highway 1 also provides a smoother and more leisurely journey, allowing you to take in the breathtaking coastal views and make scenic stops without the traffic.

Alila Ventana , a luxurious glamping resort is an excellent choice for those seeking a blend of nature and comfort. With off-season rates, you can indulge in the resort's spa, dine in its renowned restaurant, and unwind while still enjoying the serene beauty of Big Sur.

Champagne, France

champagne france

Champagne, famous for its summer grape harvest, transforms into a cozy winter wonderland at the Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa , just 45 minutes from Paris. This hillside escape between Reims and Epernay offers captivating vineyard vistas. A perfect day at Royal Champagne includes breakfast in bed, spa indulgence, fireside teatime and Michelin-starred dining. During the winter months, the region's vineyard workers prune the vines and create a festive scene with chimneys billowing smoke from cozy French cottages and cellars.

Hvar, Croatia

hvar croatia

In Hvar the months of September and October, often considered the off-season, emerge as some of the finest times to visit this sun-drenched island. Fun fact, there’s an annual average of 2,843 hours of sunshine. As temperatures begin to drop, it’s an ideal period for outdoor activities like biking (with over 100 miles of bikeable terrain) and kayaking to the enchanting Pakleni islands, known for hidden beaches and deserted lagoons.

Additionally, this season marks the culmination of the harvest, offering more opportunities to savor the delights of this up-and-coming wine region, which boasts the world's longest continually cultivated wine vineyard. If you choose to stay with Suncani Hvar Hotels , prices are discounted during the off-season and there are fewer tourists on the island.

New York City, New York

new york city

Fall in Manhattan is underrated. The milder weather and colorful foliage create a perfect backdrop for outdoor exploration and sightseeing, while the reduced tourist crowds make it easier to enjoy popular attractions so you don’t have to worry about a photobomber in your selfie with Lady Liberty. Also, the first Sunday in November is the event of the year, the New York City Marathon. More than 50,000 runners take the streets of all five boroughs and if you’re a runner or a spectator, it’s a great day for all.

Stay at the James Nomad Hotel in New York City's NoMad neighborhood. It’s a stylish boutique hotel with a central location that's convenient for going anywhere in the city from Central Park to downtown. During your stay, you can also savor seasonal dining experiences including a visit to the hotel's Scarpetta , known for their spaghetti entrée.

Knightsbridge, London

knightsbridge london

The off-season in Knightsbridge provides a serene and enchanting experience distinct from the bustling summer months and Christmas. Exploring the iconic Brompton Road and world-famous department stores like Harrods becomes more leisurely. The area's classic architecture, historic landmarks, and cultural attractions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum , are also easier to appreciate without constantly bumping shoulders with tourists.

Moreover, securing reservations at cozy cafes, Michelin-starred restaurants, and five-star hotels like the newly renovated Carlton Tower Jumeirah and Peninsula London is less competitive. These establishments offer a warm retreat from the cooler weather and quintessentially British experiences, such as high tea. You can’t skip tea time!

Key West, Florida

key west florida

While the peak tourist months are undeniably vibrant in Key West, visiting during the off-season provides a tranquil island experience with fewer crowds and more affordable flights. It's a chance to relax and recharge in the laid-back atmosphere and explore colorful streets, historic sites, and pristine beaches at your own pace.

For families enjoying Spring Break, the recently renovated Casa Marina Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton , situated on Key West's largest private beach, reopened in October. The resort offers numerous cooling options, including two large pools (one exclusively for adults), access to activity piers for jet ski tours and water rentals, private catamaran excursions, and even sand sculpting workshops with the resident sculptor, Marianne van den Broek. It's the perfect spot to enjoy the island's charm.

In conclusion, exploring destinations during their off-seasons provides a refreshing perspective on the world's most beloved places. Beyond the cost savings and reduced crowds, travelers can connect with the authentic essence of these locations, immersing themselves in the local culture, and appreciating the beauty that often remains hidden under the tourist rush.

The Pros and Cons of Off-Season Travel

For many destinations around the country — and the world — the off-season has arrived. This brief period of time — usually brought on by the start of the school year and less-than-ideal weather — can often be the best time of the year to travel. Why? You'll find more deals (both for hotels and flights) and fewer crowds. But traveling during this period often requires a little extra planning. For all of the benefits an off-season vacation has to offer, there are also some inconveniences. U.S. News got the scoop from a few travel-planning experts about where to go and what to avoid during the off-season.

See: Simple Strategies to Save on Your Next Vacation

"The opportunity for cost savings is one of the greatest advantages of traveling in the off-season and there are many destinations and vacation options that deliver on that," said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president of travel and publishing for AAA. Because hotels and attractions need to lure more travelers during this slower period, they frequently offer discounts, both for lodging and nearby attractions. With fewer crowds, you can enjoy a more intimate experience at some top attractions in a destination, which may be impossible during busy peak times.

"It's important to remember that sometimes a destination's peak season is not actually the best time to be there; rather, it's the time when school is out in locations nearby, and that's why the crowds arrive and rates go up," said Wendy Perrin, TripAdvisor's travel advocate.

Mark Jaronski, vice president of global communications for Visit Orlando, agreed. "Orlando's off-season generally follows school calendars, meaning that travel deals tend to be more available when the majority of schools are in session."

Weather tends to be a major drawback during off-season travel. "We recommend purchasing travel insurance in case inclement weather disrupts your trip," Sutherland said.

Additionally, some attractions, national parks, shops, restaurants and even resorts may be closed or close early during these slower seasons. But as a tradeoff, some destinations boast unique experiences you won't find any other time of the year: In Santa Barbara, California , you'll catch the gray whale southern migration from November through March (while also enjoying mild California temps). Meanwhile, in Charleston, South Carolina , it's oyster roast season from December to February.

"I love finding smart, unique reasons to go in the off-season," said Perrin, who shared that in August her family traveled to Mexico's Riviera Maya. "It may have been low-season in terms of hotel rates, but it's actually the very best time of year to swim and snorkel with whale sharks. And that was the highlight of our trip."

If you're planning a trip to Europe , consider a wintertime visit . Though the region's cultural capitals will be chilly (think Paris , Rome , London ), these locales offer plenty to do indoors. If you're looking to stay stateside, you've got plenty of options here, too.

Sutherland and Jaronski recommend theme park-heavy Orlando, Florida for shorter lines, slimmer crowds and lower lodging rates during the city's off-season (the months of May and September). Brave Chicago 's winter chill and you'll be rewarded with budget-friendly hotel and flight prices, plus plenty of indoor activities (including Chicago Restaurant Week ), according to Michael Samm from Choose Chicago. The Finger Lakes region in New York is often considered a summer destination, but the area also boasts affordable skiing and lodging in winter and a variety of winter festivals, according to Valerie Knoblauch of the Ontario County Tourism Bureau.

Most travelers flock to Colorado 's ski resorts over the winter holidays (which can stretch from Christmas through President's Day), but there are plenty of days in between and early in the season —  considered "off-peak" —   where deals can be found . If you time it right, you can enjoy the same winter activities, while scoring better lodging rates, ski-free deals, cheaper airfare and shorter lift lines.

"Our guests who travel to Vail during these time periods say that they find the mountain is wide open, it's easier to get reservations… and they have more time to do the things they want," said Davy Ratchford, Vail Resort's director of marketing.

Perrin warned against traveling to any islands during the off-season. "The smaller the island, the fewer its resources and the more weather-dependent your activities," she said. "On most Greek islands, for instance, restaurants are outdoors, so if you're there before mid-May or after mid-October, you could be chilly at dinner."

Additionally, ski resorts may close entirely during certain months in fall and late spring or early summer, leaving you with little in the way of activities, aside from hiking and exploring the area on your own.

"The key to planning a successful off-season vacation is research and understanding the pros and cons for traveling during this time of year," said Sutherland, who also advised managing your expectations along with determining what your priorities are for the trip.

16 Travel Destinations In The US And Abroad That You Should Seriously Consider Visiting In The Offseason

These spots are even better in the winter.

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

There's no denying that Hawaii in February or the Amalfi Coast in August is incredible. But there's something wonderful about visiting popular destinations during the offseason. Not only can you take advantage of more affordable prices, but you can also escape the crowds. Here are some truly amazing offseason destinations to consider dreaming up for your next getaway.

Snow surrounding a waterfall

Contrary to its wintery name, most travelers actually flock to Iceland in the summer months when 20-hour days stretch into nights. And while there's something to be said for the warmer weather, there's also something totally magical about winter in Iceland.

Snowy weather makes Iceland's many natural hot springs all the more enjoyable, and it's the perfect time for exploring ice caves and glaciers, snow mobile riding, driving the scenic Ring Road, warming up with a bowl of Iceland's iconic fish soup, or chasing the Northern Lights.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

Colorful buildings shaded by trees

Before the raucous days of Mardi Gras and the sweltering days of summer, winter is an amazing time to visit New Orleans. Leave behind Dry January when you visit the Big Easy: this party town is always bustling with live jazz on Frenchmen Street, block parties around the French Quarter, lively oyster bars, and festivals.

Warm up with a cocktail at  Sazerac Bar at the Roosevelt Hotel , chow down on world-famous beignets at Cafe du Monde , and admire the leafy mansions that make up the Garden District. Even in the dead of winter, you can easily find 60-degree weather here. You might even get the chance to experience a Reveillon Dinner — a holiday tradition inspired by the Creoles — which has since transformed into a lavish meal you can find at various restaurants around the city.

3. San Sebastian, Spain

Tapas and wine on a busy street

If there's one reason to visit this city in Spanish Basque Country, it's for the world-famous cuisine. The food in San Sebastian is incredible, and you could easily spend an entire trip here doing nothing but eating and drinking. Spend an afternoon bar hopping and trying different Basque tapas (called Pintxos), or pass a few hours by splurging on a Michelin-starred meal at one of San Sebastian's many acclaimed restaurants like Akelarre or Arzak .

The weather hardly ever gets too cold in San Sebastian, so you can work off some pintxos while you stroll crescent-shaped La Concha beach, the picturesque plazas, or the scenic peak of Mount Igueldo. And if you're looking for some culture, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is an easy half-day trip.

4. Tuscany, Italy

Green hills at sunrise.

In the summertime, Tuscany is quite literally a dreamland. In fact, there may be no more spectacular place in the world than the green, rolling hills of  Val d'Orcia in June. But, of course, Tuscan summer comes with peak hotel rates and tons of tourists. So savvy travelers know that this renowned Italian wine region is breathtaking no matter the season.

In fact, chilly temperatures are ideal for enjoying the region's rich and robust Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and Brunello wines and sampling the local cuisine like hearty ribollita and pici tossed in wild boar ragu. And the lack of crowds makes it even more enjoyable to explore the walled Medieval towns of Montepulciano, San Gimignano, and Pienza.

5. Northern Greece

Snow-capped mountains, forests, and a lake.

When you think of Greece, your mind probably goes right to the Greek islands — Santorini and Mykonos and Paros and all the other sun-soaked jewels floating in the Aegean Sea. But you probably don't think much of mainland Greece...until now.

This southernmost part of the Balkan peninsula is excellent for exploring during the offseason. There's Athens, of course, but there's also the picturesque lake village of Ioannina, the stunning coastline of Halkidiki ,  the incredible archaeological site of Delphi, Mount Olympus, the monasteries of Meteora, and so much more. The whole area that makes up Northern Greece is pretty much heaven for history buffs, lovers of Greek mythology, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Colorful homes looking over the sea.

Though not quite as warm year-round as its Caribbean neighbors to the south, Bermuda boasts mild weather even in the coldest winter months. This British territory is the perfect destination for relaxing and refreshing. Explore the Crystal Caves, an incredible cavernous space of stalactites and stalagmites, cliff-jump into the crystal swimming pool at Blue Hole Park, play a round of golf, admire the pastel-colored buildings in Hamilton, and walk in the pink sand at Horseshoe Beach Bay.

It may not be sunbathing weather, but it will certainly be pleasant enough to enjoy the ocean views. Whatever you do, make sure to pop by the Swizzle Inn to sample Bermuda's most iconic rum cocktails.

7. Charleston, South Carolina

A historic city street with old, colorful houses.

After the holiday season ends and before beach season kicks into full swing is a great time to experience the Southern charm, delicious culinary scene, and historic beauty of Charleston. The weather is mild and the crowds are minimal, which means you won't have to fight for your perfect photo of Rainbow Row or wait hours for a table at ever-popular  167 Raw  or Fig .

Walk along the Battery, explore the cobblestone streets and colorful houses of the historic district, take a ghost tour, go bar hopping on King Street, or take a quick trip to Isle of Palms or Sullivan's Island for some beach scenery.

8. Mexico City

Hands making street tacos

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Mexico City is one of the most exciting cities in the world. Dense, cosmopolitan, and bursting with energy, there is no bad time to visit this giant urban center. The "cold" season lasts for just two months, but even then you'll find the comfortable weather hovers around the '60s during the day.

It's the perfect weather for exploring the vibrant markets, tasting incredible street food, and strolling around the succulent-lined streets of Condesa and Roma. When the nights get chilly, pop into a mezcal bar like La Clandestina to warm right up. You could easily spend an entire day at the Museo de Antropologia , but you wouldn't want to miss La Casa Azul , the home-turned-museum of Frida Kahlo.

9. Portugal

A city square in Lisbon

Portugal has recently become increasingly popular with international travelers. It seems like people are starting to realize that this beautiful and laid-back country in the Iberian Peninsula pretty much has it all: exciting cities like Lisbon, wineries in the Douro Valley and Alentejo, beautiful beaches, traditional whitewashed towns, and a culinary scene worth traveling for.

It's not a huge country — in fact, you can drive from Porto in the north to the Algarve in the south in about five hours — but there is so much to explore. With temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s throughout the winter months, it's an excellent time to explore the country and take advantage of all the offseason benefits.

Paris and the Eiffel Tower in the snow

While summer, fall, and spring all draw in lots of crowds, winter is the low season in Paris . But in a city that is teeming with incredible restaurants, amazing museums, world-class shopping, and so much culture, who needs sunny weather?

While the temperatures hardly ever drop below freezing, winter is the cheapest and the most quiet time to visit Paris, which means you actually might be able to score a reservation at Septime or snag a table at l'As du Fallafel . And while snow is very rare in Paris, imagine the chance to see the twinkling Eiffel Tower surrounded by a sea of whiteness.

11. Morocco

A street with blue painted houses.

This popular North African destination is teeming with tourists from April through October, but visit in the offseason and you'll get a totally different taste of Morocco. If you're seeking sunshine and good weather, Marrakesh is a solid bet. Even in January, the coldest month of the year, temperatures are in the 70s, which is perfect for exploring the colorful souks of the medina, relaxing poolside at a riad, or dining al fresco on tagine and slow-roasted mechoui lamb.

Of course, there's more to Morocco than Marrakesh. The blue city of Chefchaouen is ripe for exploring, and the coastal town of Essaouira boasts history, culture, stunning landscapes, and amazing seafood. And winter happens to be the best time to trek in the Atlas Mountains or spend a night beneath the stars in the vast Sahara Desert.

12. Montreal

A quiet snowy street

There's no beating around the bush: Montreal gets freezing cold. But that's just part of the allure. There's nothing quite like walking around the snowy Old Port with its cobblestone streets, quaint bistros, and impressive stone churches. French is the official language here, and you could easily think you've been transported to Europe.

During the winter months, you'll find different festivals like Montreal en Lumière, get your maple syrup fix at a Sugar Shack , go cross-country skiing at Parc Jean-Drapeau or on one of Montreal's many trails, or even go ice fishing. And of course, there's no better way to embrace the cold than by enjoying a plate of warm and cheesy poutine at La Banquise.

13. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

A lighthouse surrounded by snow.

Cape Cod is a quintessential New England summer town where, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the small year-round population swells with visitors seeking sun and sand. And while you won't find beach weather come November, Cape Cod offers a totally different but equally as charming escape during the offseason months. The offseason rates at  Chatham Bars Inn are seriously alluring.

Cozy up by the fire with a good book, admire the lighthouses at Race Point or Falmouth, do some antique shopping, bundle up and walk along the Cape Cod National Seashore, or pick a trail in one of the various wildlife sanctuaries scattered around the island.

14. Bali, Indonesia

A peninsula jutting out into the ocean

Bali's rainy season runs from November to March, which deters many visitors from making the admittedly long trek to this Indonesian island. But don't let the weather scare you. While this tropical island can experience quite a bit of rain during the winter months, most storms only last about an hour or two, passing as abruptly as they began.

That means you'll still have plenty of sunshine for exploring the gorgeous beaches of Nusa Dua and the lively village of Canggu. Plus, the green jungles and rice terraces of Ubud look even more lush during the rainy season. Best of all, you'll experience fewer crowds and more affordable hotel rates.

15. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

A herd of bison walking in snow

Most people wait for warmer weather to explore the National Parks, but the truth is that Yellowstone and nearby Grand Teton National Park are just as extraordinary in the offseason. Yellowstone during winter instills a totally new sense of peace, awe, and serenity. Snow dusted trails snake past steaming hot springs, geysers, and bubbling mud pools, and bison trek through the frigid landscape wearing their full winter coats. And there's nothing quite like warming up by the fireplace at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Cabins  after a long, cold day of exploring.

16. Portland, Maine

A New England street covered in snow.

This port city in Southern Maine is everything you might expect from a coastal New England town in the summertime: lobster shacks, lighthouses, and beaches galore. But Portland takes on a whole different kind of cozy charm during the offseason. Unlike many other beach towns, pretty much everything remains open in Portland all year long.

So you can still fuel up on lobster rolls and oysters at Eventide , gallery hop in the historic Old Port district, or go walking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing on one of Portland's many trails. If the weather is mild, walk on Pine Point Beach on Saco Bay, or make your way to Portland Headlight.

How to Do Italy in the Off Season, According to Travel Specialists

While Italy is never a bad idea per se, there are times when the the high-heeled boot kicks better than others. Those times lie in the off-season, when baking heat compounds not with throngs of crowds, and you, the tourist, find yourself with a touch more cool air to breathe. Between October and April and from thigh to toe to rock that the toe kicks (I am referring to Sicily ), the entire country comes alive in ways that most tourists will never get to experience if they stick to August.

"Could that really be true?" You ask. “It is true,” we at Traveler respond. It's easier to get reservations, for one thing, at storied establishments in Rome and elsewhere. The weather is milder, and not at cost of sunshine. Seasonal events you won't regret attending like Piedmont 's White Truffle Festival and the Feast of Sant Agata in Catania fall during this portion of the calendar. But don't let us alone convince you. Below, we've spoken to a handful of agents from our most trusted travel specialists about trips to Italy that they've planned in the off-season of which they are particularly proud.

Langhe, the Barolo red wine region of Piedmont, in autumn.

Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna

“One of the trips I recently put together that I am really proud of is to Lake Como , Piedmont, and Emilia-Romagna. This particular multi-generational family of 13 is from Texas, and they were really wanting to avoid the heat and the crowds as they have enough of that at home. They were really interested in Como and Passalacqua , the new-kid-on-the-block hotel that’s leaning into off-season travel itself by being open year round.

That’s why I planned it around Como, but I had them starting in Piedmont at the Casa di Langa for three days, about a two-and-a-half hour drive away, because it’s the kick-off of white truffle season. They’ll go to the truffle fair which is every weekend in Alba and eat at a mix of Michelin-starred restaurants and local trattorias. This region in general, you could compare it to Tuscany, if you’re a wine connoisseur this is where the Barolos and Barbarescos come from. But it’s much more concentrated than Tuscany , with hilltop villages and Alps in the background. It’s still very local. And then Lake Como is Lake Como. Weaving in Emilia-Romagna for tree days at Grand Hotel Majestic già Baglioni , a three-hour-drive south from Como, for the food element as well—it’s the food capital of Italy in my mind with prosciutto di parma and parmesan cheese and what we would call 'bolognese"'. You base yourself in Bologna, the city heart, and go into the countryside for the producers. There’s also Modena and Parma, two beautiful towns, Modena being the home of [Massimo Bottura’s] Osteria Francescana . Another benefit of traveling in the off-season is that you’re much more likely to be able to dine at a place like that. Getting a reservation doesn’t necessarily require waking up at 4 a.m. six months in advance, which I have done." — Caroline Quinn, Black Tomato

Catania in February, at the time of the Feast of Sant Agata.

Catania, Sicily

“How about the Feast of Sant Agata in Catania , where we sent clients in February this year? Sicily in February is heaven, the weather is gorgeous, and it’s warm enough to shrug off your winter woolies and eat outside. The fields are carpeted with wild flowers—the drive between Catania and Noto is spectacular—and it’s the time of year for the orange harvest which makes a wonderful contrast to the drab temperature and mood at home ( London , in my case). The Feast of Sant Agata attracts millions of pilgrims each year from around Sicily and is still very local and wild, with candlelit processions through the night, day time fireworks including from the roof of the Duomo and lots of celebrating. We are lucky enough to have friends who own a palazzo facing the Duomo where our clients could watch everything going on. During the day we drove them to Piazza Armerina to see the ‘bikini girls’ and at the Villa Romana which has the largest collection of Roman mosaics anywhere in the world. Normally packed with visitors, we had the entire villa to ourselves which was extraordinary.

Even Taormina , which has suffered from a deluge of visitors from what is known as the White Lotus effect (which I’m afraid I’m partly responsible for) was relatively empty. February is a brilliant month to visit Sicily especially if you’re curious about Ancient Rome, rather than baking alive in 100 degrees along with scores of other visitors you have the immense luxury of visiting temples, ruins, museums and mosaics alone.” — Emily Fitzroy , Bellini Travel

The Dolomites have quaint mountain villages and epic scenery best explored in cooler months

The Dolomites

“It’s a little bit of a local secret that fall proper is the best season in the Dolomites . Not only is there the changing of the seasons and the colors, but also a sensation of quiet that the locals find very welcome after what was likely a busy summer and early fall. They are keen to promote this time to visitors—over the years, I’ve been told by owners and general managers of hotels that this really is the best time to be here, you’re sharing the paths with fewer people and the air quality is amazing. I don’t know exactly why, there is a temperature change, but the quality of the views is so long and crisp and crystal with the contrast between the greens of the land with the blue skies. It’s a visual therapy. Plus, a lot of our travelers prefer the crispness for hiking over heat. It’s the right climate. At the same time, in the area where I run trips, we have 300 days of sunshine annually. Key towns to visit are Urtijëi and Castelrotto. The gateway city is Bolzano, a year-round residential city that’s worth spending time in. It’s the rendezvous point with a fantastic archeological museum and a university, so the vibe there is a mix of younger people and families.

I had an October trip that ended up being a private group of seven couples in their mid- to late-fifties. They were very happy to stay in Val Gardena. They requested that there be two different levels of hike each day—a rigorous group and a laidback group, the latter of which got to drop into little towns like Urtijëi to have a look around—Urtijëi is actually quite lively and has a great artistic tradition of woodwork. We would also mountain bike, which is popular here, and have wine tastings and private evenings at mountain huts that opened just for us. We brought in music from accordions in the evenings when everyone would gather together, and had opportunities for casual pizza nights and refined evenings at the hotel. I was able to join the group one evening, and it was really like a roving cocktail party with friends and friends of friends. Because it was quiet in the region, they felt like they had it to themselves and I was able to create private events even moreso. Everyone was able to have the experience that they wanted.” — Georgia Yuill , Butterfield & Robinson

Italy Florence Hotel Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, a 5,000-acre estate in the Val d'Orcia, sits near the town of Montalcino in Siena, Tuscany.

Siena, Tuscany

"South of Siena, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is a 5,000-acre estate in the Val d’Orcia, near the town of Montalcino that I sent a family of five for a special Thanksgiving retreat this past November. I had personally visited Villa Ardore in Chianti in the fall on an industry trip organized by Bruno Lima of Destinare. We had a magical moonlit dinner with the villa owner, Christian Scali— with a private chef turning out wood fired pizzas in their outdoor oven. Over a glass of local wine, Christian was sharing stories of special time spent with his partner and their neighbors enjoying the off-season magic of the villa and this region during the holidays.

When clients came looking for a special holiday experience to share with their adult children, my mind was immediately transported back to Christian's stories. These clients weren't seeking a private villa or I would've happily sent them to Villa Ardore. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco was the perfect answer with their luxurious but rustic chic accommodations, onsite winery, and cooking school.

After an overnight direct flight to Rome, we had a private driver pick them up at FCO and take them on the three-hour drive to the estate. Well rested and shaking off their jetlag, they enjoyed a cheese, wine, and vineyard tour that afternoon at the Castiglion del Bosco winery, the producer of Brunello di Montalcino. They finished off their night at Michelin-starred Ristorante Campo di Drago. The next day they were off truffle hunting, Brunello tasting, and enjoying a black truffle lunch. Then off to wander and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in the town of Montalcino and a night cap back at the property with a family chess game by the fire. The following day they took a cooking class, making fresh pasta by hand, and hiked the gorgeous property. The weather was crisp and sunny and our satisfied clients reported that the crowds were perfect—just enough for some lively energy without a single hint of chaos.” — Kim Hannum, Fora Travel

Off-Season Travel in Europe

off season to travel

James O'Neil/Getty Images

A summer vacation, for many, is the highlight of their year. Heading to sunnier climes, enjoying the beach or an ice cream in the shade of a beautiful cathedral: it is the definition of what traveling is about.

But for others, the best time to travel is in the off-season. You'll hear seasoned travelers extolling the virtues of September-May travel so often you probably know them by heart: fewer tourists, greater cultural options and mingling opportunities with the locals, more relaxed atmosphere, cheaper airfares and hotel rates, and the lack of that summer swelter.

Though there are benefits to high season in Europe: it rains less, there's maximum daylight, it's easy packing light, and there are abundant tourist resources, off-season travel still trumps high-season travel for many adventurers.

Places to Go

First, let's define some commonly agreed upon off-season and shoulder-season dates:

  • High Season: (Peak Season): Summer, Mid June-August
  • Shoulder Season:  April through May, some say through mid-June, September through October.
  • Off Season: November through March

Seasoned travelers base their destinations on seasonal considerations. For example, you might not particularly fancy eating the traditional tourist favorites of Germany, Switzerland or Austria in summer; the food is too heavy for the heat. But on a crisp fall day, you might be more than happy to walk the black forest or cruise the Rhine, then return to your hotel, take a hot bath, and go downstairs to a medieval wood-beamed room with roaring fire to eat mounds of sausages and spaetzle while drinking lustily from a flask of homemade Riesling.

Here are a few tips for some experiences that are unique to the quieter months.

  • September in Europe
  • October in Europe
  • November in Europe

Truffles: the Sexy Fungus

Truffles give off the sexiest odor on the planet, according to some people. Why not go root some out yourself? Go to Italy's Piemonte to sample the fabulous food and hunt yourself out some of your own tubers at La Casa del Trifulau:

  • Food and Wines of Italy's Piemonte Region

Or, if you just wanted to stay at a truffle hunter's B&B, plan a November trip to Tra Arte & Querce and have a  truffle breakfast  each morning (and more for dinner if you wish).

If you're in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, you can participate in a fall truffle hunt in October-November at Al Vecchio Convento, which also features a very fine restaurant, cooking classes, and a once a week dinner buffet with traditional dancing to local Romagna music.

If just buying and eating truffles interests you: Go to a truffle market in France that welcomes visitors. This is best done when you have rented an apartment so you can enjoy the experience of slicing your truffle over your morning scrambled eggs.

A Wine Festival in Tuscany

Yes, people in Europe make a big deal over wine, especially after harvest is over. People tend to dress in medieval costumes and celebrate as they have since way before the advent of television and other time-frittering endeavors.

And, if you really want to get into the lifestyle, you could take a course in Ancient Painting Techniques or Etching, and live in Italy for a bit. Falling over Florence? Try  L’Accademia D’Arte .

For the Contrarian - the Polar Circle and Iceland

Why not go against the grain and choose a tour that doesn't promise to warm the cockles of your vacationing heart? Say, a tour of Denmark and Greenland where you can choose between a wide variety of Winter pastimes as early as early November, Like a Dog Sledge Experience or a Reindeer Safari, not to mention an overnight in an Igloo? Besides, when people ask where you went on vacation you can say "Kangerlussuaq" (or maybe you can't).

Or why not visit Iceland in the Autumn? You could take in Iceland by the light of the Aurora Borealis in October.

Greenland is also a nice place to visit for the cool traveler.

Ardor and Armor

Autumn is turtle mating season on the Greek island of Kos. You may well ask, "so what?" but the truth is: a decent recounting of the spectacle is one of those things that'll make you a hit at parties for years to come, especially if you can imitate the sound the male makes (let's just say "a passionate hissing") as he clunks against the female's almost impenetrable armor.

Rain and Reduced Sunlight

For Mediterranean countries, fall starts the rainy season. Over the ages, many cities have found ways to deal with the inconvenience of a daylight rain. The Italian city of Bologna features a huge network of arcaded streets. You can walk from one side of town to the other without getting wet. Medieval Europe featured houses with overhangs, it's one of the ways you can tell the older parts of a city. Old towns also offer seductive cafes. Pop in and nurse a coffee, soda, or warming snifter of brandy while waiting for the rain to taper off. Or use your railpass to take a scenic train ride.

And, yes, the off-season in Europe is marked by fewer hours of sunlight. If you shudder at the thought of walking "downtown" in a city after dark, consider that European city centers are quite a bit safer than most American ones at these hours, because European culture favors convivial meetings in public places along with moderate alcohol consumption.

Packing Tips

  • Pack light Easy when your daily wear is shorts and a shirt. Things get tricky when the weather cools. The key is layering. Bring a light undershirt, long sleeved shirt, sweater if it's going to be cold, light windbreaker/rain jacket for the rainy days.
  • Use compressor bags  Eagle Creek makes some excellent compressor bags. You'll find that you can squeeze 40-50 percent of bulk out of a sweater with these bags.

off-season-travel-winter: a person sitting and watching the northern lights.

After a busy summer of travel, many people may want to embrace a more low-key vibe this winter . Seeking out popular destinations off-season is a great way to ensure fewer crowds, lower prices and better access to attractions and restaurants. Off-season travel, which involves visiting a well-trodden place when there is less tourist activity, typically because of weather, is a good strategy for enjoying bucket list spots in a more affordable, less stressful way. For many destinations, including Europe, the off-season period kicks off in September and runs through the December holidays. According to Hopper , travelers can save as much as 30 percent off peak summer flight prices just by traveling in September or later.

While there are plenty of places to enjoy during the off-season, travelers tend to benefit most from destinations that are busier during the spring and summer, like Japan or Mexico, or places that draw people to beachside resorts. Here are some of the best off-season places to travel this winter.

The 5 Best Places to Travel in January

off season travel winter cape cod

1. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

  • Best For:  families, friend groups, sweater obsessives
  • Off-Season Pros:  moody vibes, local feel, hotel deals
  • Off-Season Cons: gray skies, bad weather for swimming
  • Where to Stay: Classic Cape Cottage (from $140/night; sleeps 4), Nauset Heights Cottage (from $330/night; sleeps 4), Beach Glass Cottage (from $199/night; sleeps 7)

Winter in Cape Cod can be chilly and gray, but there’s still plenty to see and do, including beach walks, Christmas celebrations and museums that are blissfully free of crowds. Popular destinations include Provincetown, Wellfleet, Nantucket and Orleans, although you can find cozy, charming B&Bs and inns scattered all over the Cape. High Pointe Inn , in West Barnstable, is open year-round, while Gabriel’s Provincetown Inn features winter-ready fireplaces and soaking tubs. Explore the John F. Kennedy Museum or the Sandwich Glass Museum , or bundle up for a stroll along the Cape Cod Rail Trail . The seafood obsession also doesn’t stop just because it’s winter—look for beloved spots like The Beachcomber, Skipper Chowder House and Lobster Pot to indulge in lobster rolls, local oysters and clam chowder.

off season travel winter santorini

2. Santorini, Greece

  • Best For:  families, couples, relaxation junkies
  • Off-Season Pros:  fewer crowds, resort deals
  • Off-Season Cons:  off-season closures, cool weather, unavailable boat trips
  • Where to Stay: Cave Home (from $534/night; sleeps 6) Scorpios Beach Hotel (inquire for rates), Caldera Premium Villas (from $394/night)

Peak tourist season in Santorini runs through September, but the late fall and winter are a perfect time to enjoy the rugged Greek island without crowds blocking your every move. Airlines typically offer lower flights during that time period and the resorts became much more affordable thanks to cooler weather and shorter days. While you may not want to sunbathe, Santorini’s cliffside towns, Fira and Oia , remain lively, with cafés and restaurants open all year (watching the sunset in Oia is the island most popular attraction). Visitors can also hike, tour wineries like Santos Wines or take a boat tour around the famed Caldera. Book a room at the tranquil, tucked away Scorpios Beach Hotel or rent one of the Caldera Premium Villas , which offer views of the water. To take full advantage of Greece off-season, add Mykonos to your itinerary, or opt for a few days in Athens before or after.

off season travel winter tokyo

3. Tokyo, Japan

  • Best For:  solo travelers, families, nerds
  • Off-Season Pros:  less tourists, easier to get restaurant reservations
  • Off-Season Cons:  cold weather, busy around Christmas
  • Where to Stay: Agora Tokyo Ginza (from $189/night), The Blossom Hibiya (from $281/night), Trunk Hotel (from $341/night), Conrad Tokyo (from $373/night)

Tokyo is a bucket-list destination for many travelers, but the spring and summer months can be overly crowded and, frankly, overwhelming in the Japanese capital. Although the weather can be chilly, late fall and winter are a great time to visit instead, especially when you can seek out hotel and flight deals during off-peak times. Book a room at the recently-opened Trunk Hotel , which offers easy access to Shibuya and Omotesando, or go for a splurge at the Conrad Tokyo , which caters to families. There’s a lot to experience in Tokyo , but some of the highlights include Tokyo National Museum , Tsukiji Fish Market, teamLab Planets , Mori Art Museum , and Golden Gai, a collection of lively alleyway bars. Delicious food is also plentiful, from ramen to tempura to sushi, and you really can’t go wrong (but do queue for Nemuro Hanamaru Ginza , one of the most sought-after sushi conveyer belt restaurants in town).

off-season-travel-winter: a beach in tulum.

4. Tulum, Mexico

  • Best For:  adventurers, couples, nature lovers
  • Off-Season Pros:  less tourists, warm weather
  • Off-Season Cons:  possible rain, busy around Christmas
  • Where to Stay: Hotelito Azul (from $259/night), Jungle Villa (from $190/night; sleeps 2), Luxury Apartment (from $80/night; sleeps 5), La Zebra (from $265/night)

Tulum maintains a steady temperature of 80 degrees F during the winter, making it an ideal off-season getaway for those seeking some sun. The prices tend to increase from December, so plan a trip in early winter when hotels lower their prices and offer deals for longer stays. Skip the bigger resorts and book into a boutique property like La Zebra , a beachside spot with an expansive spa. While you can certainly spend your trip relaxing by the pool, Tulum itself boasts impressive Mayan ruins and a charming downtown. Nearby, go for a swim in the Gran Cenote, visit beloved beach Playa Paraíso or take a drive to snorkel in Akumal. The food in Tulum is top-notch these days—seek out Moro , Hartwood and NÜ Tulum , which reopens in October 2023.

off-season-travel-winter: a skyline view of geneva.

5. Geneva, Switzerland

  • Best For:  couples, solo travelers, culture buffs
  • Off-Season Pros:  fewer crowds, Christmas markets, hotel deals
  • Off-Season Cons: cold weather, seasonal restaurant closures
  • Where to Stay: CitizenM Geneva (from $204/night), Hotel Rotary Geneva – MGallery (from $293/night), The New Midi (from $174/night), Mandarin Oriental Geneva (from $882/night)

While many people jet to Switzerland in the wintertime to take advantage of Alpine skiing , the country’s cities tend to be far less crowded, with lots to see and do. Geneva, known as the home of the United Nations, is a great pick off-season since most travelers simply use it as a stopover on the way to Chamonix. Because of its proximity to France and its international vibe, the city boasts cuisine from around the world, including vibrant Peruvian spot Yakumanka and La Buvette Bains des Pâquis , located on a swimming pier. Visitors can explore museums like the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Musée d'Art et d'Histoire , or take a guided walking tour of Geneva’s old town. Enjoy scenic views of the Rhône river from the rooms at the Mandarin Oriental Geneva , a recently-revamped property that frequently has packages on offer. Nearby, Lausanne is home to the Olympic Museum and a popular Christmas market that runs from the end of November.

off season travel winter rekyavik

6. Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Best For:  solo travelers, groups of friends, nature lovers
  • Off-Season Pros:  northern lights, fewer crowds, flight deals
  • Off-Season Cons:  extremely dark, cold weather
  • Where to Stay: Exeter Hotel (from $255/night), Home in Reykjavik (from $138/night; sleeps 3), Iceland Parliament Hotel (from $432/night), Reykjavik Edition (from $638/night)

Iceland has become one of the top international destinations for travelers over the past five years, thanks in part to its incredible landscape and plethora of outdoor activities. Although daylight is in short supply in the winter, the off-season can be a great time to experience Reykjavik , Iceland’s main city. Not only do you have a good chance of spotting the northern lights, but there are natural hot springs throughout the island country, including the famed Blue Lagoon . Grab a room at the harborside The Reykjavik Edition or opt for the centrally-located Iceland Parliament Hotel . Nearby, the Pósthús Food Hall & Bar is great for a low-key lunch before exploring Rainbow Street and The National Gallery of Iceland . If you want to get outdoors in the snow, take a day trip to Thingvellir National Park or Hraunfossar.

off-season-travel-winter: a hill in tuscany with greenery and houses.

7. Tuscany, Italy

  • Best For:  couples, families, foodies
  • Off-Season Pros:  fewer crowds, hotel and flight deals
  • Off-Season Cons:  wineries may be closed, cold weather
  • Where to Stay: Golden Tower Hotel & Spa (from $727/night), Iris Cottage Villa (from $115/night; sleeps 6), Renovated Apartment in Medieval Village (from $102/night; sleeps 6)

Your dream of renting a Tuscan villa is even more achievable off-season, with lower prices and the cozy vibe of winter. The region of Tuscany , which includes Florence, Pisa, Siena, and Livorno, is just as compelling during the cooler months as it is in the summer—and with far less tourists at iconic attractions like the Uffizi Galleries and the Leaning Tower of Pisa . A trip to the area can be tailored to the preferences of any traveler, whether you prefer to explore a city like Florence or to unwind in the countryside. Splurge on a stay in real-life castle Castello di Vicarello , a luxury hotel that welcomes guests in all seasons, or make the actual villa from Under the Tuscan Sun your holiday home. While some of the local wineries shut down for the winter, there is plenty to eat and drink at every turn and you can even try your hand at truffle hunting .

Travel to Hawaii in the Off-Season

Jason

Summer’s over, meaning kids go back to school, college starts its fall semester, and the heat finally relents after months of sweat. It also means that one of the peak travel times has passed, and everyone goes back to work to bide their time until the winter holidays. In general, there are less people traveling worldwide, and especially to Hawaii. Here’s a guide on how you can take advantage of the off-season’s offerings!

When is “off-season”?

Traveller's luggage on the Maui AIrport

In general, Hawaii’s off-season is in  late winter  (January to early March),  late spring  (late April to early June), and  fall (September to mid-December). Different people will give you different answers as to when off-season really is, mostly because of how complicated and unpredictable travel and travel-related trends can be.

In addition, each place has it’s own off-season, and most (like Hawaii) have multiple times of year that are considered off-season. Lastly, some people also refer to off-seasons as “low seasons,” “trough times, ” or a variety of other terms that are unique to specific tourist destinations.

For this guide, we’re using the term “off-season” to refer to the less busy times of the year—note that we said “less busy” rather than “empty” or “quiet.

Compared to a lot of other tourist destinations, Hawaii is  always busy . With that in mind, every time we describe a trend or pattern just understand that any statements will be relative rather than absolute. So, relatively speaking, the above listed times are much less busy because you avoid the many travelers visiting during their winter holidays, spring breaks, and summer vacations.

Why Come in the Off-season?

It's less crowded.

Mom an daughter by the beach

The busy seasons in Hawaii are characterized by climate, holidays, and convenience, but they often involve competition for rates, deals, and personal space. This can make it difficult to enjoy a beautiful Hawaiian sunset or a romantic dinner cruise with a throng of tourists. One compelling argument to travel in the off-season is to skip the crowds.

The summer traveling season , which lasts from early June to August , is filled with large groups of tourists eager to see and do everything before summer ends. However, starting in September, these large groups migrate back home, leaving tourist destinations less crowded. The winter holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, attract many visitors, including “snowbirds” from colder climates. This period is the busiest time of year worldwide, and Hawaii is no exception.

However, between the winter holidays and spring break, travel decreases significantly, making it an ideal time to escape both crowds and the coldest months of the year. To avoid crowds, consider all major holidays and convenient travel times… and avoid them like the plague.

The Prices are Lower

Gift voucher

Market forces dictate that as demand decreases, prices must decrease to account for the surplus of supply. In the off-season, hotel and airline companies lower their prices due to the decreased volume of people traveling. Compared to traveling in October, buying a plane ticket during the summer would be one-and-a-half times as expensive, and taking a flight at the end of December would cost more than twice as much. This price trend also applies to hotel accommodations, as the convenience of traveling during major holidays will cost you cold hard cash. On the other hand, it means that things are cheaper in the off-season, there’s less competition for plane seats and hotel rooms, and everything is less crowded than in the busy times of year.

Govisithawaii.com , an excellent resource for Hawaii hotel trends, produced an infographic on Hawaii hotel trends, including a line graph. Many hotel, airline, and tour companies also offer discounts and special deals to stimulate business during the off-season. Off-season flights are usually half the cost of those at Christmas, but airline companies often make last-minute deals on flights to fill up seats when they aren’t busy. Hotels also offer lower rates on accommodations to stay in the black during the less busy months.

In conclusion, the off-season is a time for businesses to lower prices and more deals pop up to encourage people to travel.

The Weather is Particularly Milder

Long chairs and umbrella by the beach

Hawaii’s weather is generally pleasant for tourists, but summer travelers may experience sunburn due to its high ultraviolet index due to its proximity to the equator. The sun’s direct UV rays can reach up to 90° F, making it difficult to avoid skin redness and sensitivity. Summer travelers should apply sunscreen regularly, as the dry months rarely offer cloud cover from the sun’s intense rays.

Winter travelers face unique challenges in Hawaii. Winters are wet, which is beneficial for tropical plants and greener surroundings, but not ideal for beach activities, cruises, or leisurely hikes. Weather forecasts are unpredictable and unpredictable, and weather conditions can be unpredictable and unpredictable. Winter is also prime surfing time for Hawaii residents and visitors, with larger waves and rougher ocean conditions.

The spring and fall months provide a perfect balance between the two seasons, offering occasional rainfall, warm temperatures, and a milder climate. The sun remains with lesser intensity, and occasional clouds provide brief respites and drizzle. Although the water remains fairly warm from the summer and there will be waves, winters are less dangerous. Variable weather also offers advantages, as individual areas may see more sun and rain than others. If you prefer a different climate, driving to another location can provide a change of climate.

There's Greater Adaptability

Oahu aerial view by the plane

Chances are, if you’re not planning to visit during any major holidays, you’re more flexible as to when you’re willing to travel. An adjustable travel schedule allows you one major benefit: the freedom to bargain-hunt.

Instead of planning a week of travel and hoping for deals on that day, you can search for specials first, then plan your trip around any discounts you might find. You’ll be shocked at how much money you can save bargain-hunting for special deals on flights, hotels, and even tours at any off-season destination.

Obviously, these specials won’t happen during busy times of the year or major holidays when everyone and their aunt decides to travel. However, there’s no way of telling exactly when these deals will pop up, so deal-savvy travelers will have to keep their eyes open and their schedules flexible. And that’s a major strength of traveling off-season that many people overlook:  you decide when it’s best to travel instead of being constrained to a calendar.

Summer’s over! Will you be traveling this fall? Do you have any other questions about traveling in the off-season? Let us know in the comments!

January in Hawaii offers a refreshing change from the typical winter scene. While the mainland may be in the grip of cold, Hawaii greets visitors with cooler but pleasant temperatures, making it a cozy time to explore.

But the real treat?

A jumping humpback whale near Oahu Island, Hawaii, America

January is prime whale-watching season . Grab your binoculars, because the majestic humpback whales grace the Hawaiian waters during this time, presenting a spectacular natural show.

We usually have the best luck seeing whales on Maui !

For sports enthusiasts, the island of Oahu buzzes with excitement as the PGA Tour’s Sony Open takes place in Honolulu. It’s a grand event that attracts golfing aficionados from around the world.

As for the crowds, January sees a mix. The early part of the month still holds onto the holiday rush, but as the month progresses, the crowd thins out, and there’s a slight drop in prices.

It’s a fantastic balance of vibrant events, natural wonders, and serene moments.

Hawaii in February: Romance and Revelry

February in Hawaii continues to be a prime time for nature enthusiasts, as the humpback whales remain the stars of the show, gracing the waters with their majestic presence.

These gentle giants provide unparalleled viewing experiences that resonate with both first-time visitors and returning fans.

However, the islands also burst into a lively mood with the Waimea Town Celebration on Kauai. This vibrant event is a beautiful mix of Hawaiian culture, music, and food, making it a must-attend for anyone visiting Hawaii during this period.

And, speaking of special moments, imagine spending Valentine’s Day in paradise ! Hawaii in February offers a romantic backdrop like no other.

Whether you’re strolling on moonlit beaches or enjoying a candlelit dinner with ocean views, the Aloha spirit makes Valentine’s celebrations even more magical.

February truly captures the heart and soul of Hawaii’s charm.

March in Hawaii: Spring Awakens

As winter gives way to spring, Hawaii undergoes a gentle transformation in March .

The islands experience a delightful shift in weather, with temperatures beginning to warm up and nature bursting into vibrant hues, echoing the rejuvenating spirit of spring.

A highlight of the month is the Honolulu Festival .

Celebrated primarily on Oahu, this event showcases the rich cultural tapestry of the Pacific region. With dance performances, art displays, and grand parades, the festival draws visitors and locals alike into a world of shared heritage and unity.

However, with spring’s arrival, so comes the influx of Spring Break travelers. Popular spots like Waikiki Beach or the North Shore can get bustling, as families and students flock to enjoy the sun and surf.

It’s a lively time to visit, with a contagious energy in the air, but those seeking solitude might prefer the quieter corners of the islands.

April in Hawaii: Traditions and Tranquility

April in Hawaii welcomes visitors with mild temperatures and the promise of clearer skies, as the rainfall becomes a tad less frequent.

The landscapes gleam in the gentle sun, making it a picturesque time to explore the islands.

An event that truly embodies the spirit of Hawaii in April is the Merrie Monarch Festival .

Hosted in Hilo on the Big Island, this week-long celebration is dedicated to King David Kalākaua and is a grand showcase of Hawaiian culture, especially hula. Dancers from across the globe participate, making it a vibrant and unforgettable spectacle.

If you’re considering a trip around Easter , you’re in for a treat.

While Hawaii embraces its unique traditions, Easter festivities blend seamlessly. Beachside Easter egg hunts and sunrise services are quite popular.

However, do note that this period might see a slight surge in visitors, given the holiday season.

Our kids usually have spring break in April and we definitely notice larger crowds and higher airfare in early April.

Plan ahead for a smooth vacation experience.

May in Hawaii: A Serene Prelude to Summer

May is a gem of a month to visit Hawaii. As the islands bask in dry and calm weather conditions, it offers the perfect prelude before the high energy of summer sets in.

The balmy days and slightly cooler nights make for comfortable explorations, whether you’re hitting the beach or trailing through the lush rainforests.

One of the most heartwarming events in May is the Lei Day Celebration .

An ode to the Hawaiian tradition of lei-making, this day sees locals and visitors donning these fragrant garlands, reflecting the Aloha spirit in full bloom.

Traveling to Hawaii in May comes with the distinct advantage of the shoulder season. Not only do you get to avoid the peak summer crowds, but you often find better deals on accommodations and flights.

In essence, May promises an intimate Hawaiian experience, blending tradition, weather, and travel perks seamlessly.

May is hands-down one of my favorite times to visit Hawaii. That’s because flight prices are usually decent and the weather is comfortable.

June in Hawaii: Summer Splendor Begins

As the calendar flips to June , Hawaii welcomes the onset of summer with sun-kissed beaches and azure waters beckoning travelers to dive into paradise.

The weather turns warmer, but the gentle Pacific breezes ensure comfort, making it ideal for sunbathing or taking a refreshing dip.

A significant highlight of June is King Kamehameha Day .

This day commemorates the legendary king who united the Hawaiian Islands. Across the state, grand parades, hula performances, and vibrant floral processions honor his legacy, offering visitors a deep dive into Hawaii’s rich history and traditions.

However, with summer’s arrival comes the school holidays. Families flock to the islands to make the most of their break, which means popular tourist spots might get a bit crowded.

If you’re seeking tranquility, consider venturing into lesser-known areas. Nonetheless, June’s allure lies in its blend of history, sunshine, and island festivities.

July in Hawaii: Sizzling Summer Delights

As July rolls around, Hawaii truly embraces its tropical charm. With warm temperatures bathing the islands, it’s the epitome of a sun-soaked paradise.

The balmy days, complemented by refreshing ocean breezes, create the quintessential beach holiday mood, inviting everyone to indulge in island adventures.

A gastronomic treat awaits in July with the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival .

This event attracts foodies from all over, celebrating the culinary diversity of the islands. Local chefs team up with international culinary stars, presenting dishes that are both an art and a sensory delight.

Moreover, the Fourth of July , or Independence Day, is fun in Hawaii. While traditional BBQs and beach picnics are common, what truly stands out are the mesmerizing fireworks displays, especially in areas like Waikiki.

Amidst the summer fun, July in Hawaii offers a blend of culinary escapades and patriotic festivities.

August in Hawaii: Sunlit Serenades and Summer’s Farewell

August is the hottest month in Hawaii. In fact, it can be downright muggy.

It feels super tropical and sunny. The beaches are bright and inviting, making it hard to stay away from the sparkling water.

Yet, even in this warmth, Hawaii’s trade winds bring a cooling relief, making outdoor activities and ocean plunges all the more inviting.

For those with an ear for music, August hosts the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival , an event that celebrates one of Hawaii’s most beloved musical traditions.

The melodious tunes of the slack key guitar, played against a backdrop of palm-fringed horizons, is a soul-soothing experience few other places can offer.

As August in Hawaii nears its end, the islands experience the wind-down from the summer holidays.

While the early weeks still resonate with the vibrant energy of summer vacationers, the latter part of the month brings a more relaxed atmosphere, setting the tone for early fall.

September in Hawaii: Welcoming Fall with Aloha

September in Hawaii marks the gentle shift from the height of summer to milder, more temperate days. The intense warmth starts to wane, giving way to softer, more comfortable temperatures.

This transitional phase bathes the islands in a delightful blend of sun and breeze, making it an ideal month for those seeking a balanced tropical experience.

This statewide cultural extravaganza honors Hawaii’s music, dance, and history. With parades, hula shows, and traditional chants, it’s a vibrant showcase of the islands’ rich heritage and the spirit of ‘Aloha’.

One of September’s best-kept secrets?

It’s a month that often sees fewer visitors, thanks to school sessions resuming. This low crowd advantage means quieter beaches, shorter queues at attractions, and a more intimate, relaxed Hawaiian vacation experience.

October in Hawaii: Cinema, Celebrations, and Calm

October in Hawaii greets visitors with a refreshing ambiance.

While the temperatures remain comfortably warm, there’s a noticeable increase in occasional rainfall, draping the Hawaiian islands in a fresh, rejuvenated glow.

These brief showers, often followed by rainbows, add to the magic of the Hawaiian landscape.

For film enthusiasts, October is a treat. The Hawaii International Film Festival takes center stage, showcasing a curated selection of global cinema, with a special emphasis on Pacific-Asian films and narratives.

Traveling in October also offers the benefits of the fall shoulder season.

With fewer tourists around, you can enjoy better deals on accommodations, reduced wait times at popular spots, and a tranquil atmosphere that makes exploring Hawaii even more serene.

November in Hawaii: Raindrops, Revelry, and Retail

November in Hawaii marks the onset of the islands’ rainy season.

While sun-drenched moments still abound, brief, scattered showers paint the landscapes in richer shades of green, offering a fresh and vibrant aura to Hawaii’s iconic vistas.

The festive mood begins to build, especially with the Waikiki Holiday Parade . Commemorating Pearl Harbor survivors and veterans, the parade is a colorful spectacle of music, floats, and Hawaiian culture that lights up Honolulu’s streets.

When you think of an Italian vacation, what comes to mind? Perhaps you picture Rome's historic attractions or Tuscany's vineyards — or maybe you prefer the picture-perfect Amalfi Coast or the iconic Venetian canals. No matter what part of Italy you want to visit, though, you'll need to know the best time to do it. Weather, crowd size, cost, and other factors can all influence your decision, but here's a basic breakdown of the Italian tourist seasons.

  • High Season: May to September
  • Shoulder Seasons: March to April and October to November
  • Low Season: December to February

Below, we'll walk through the best (and worst) times to visit Italy for every type of vacation so you can start planning your next Italian getaway.

Best Times to Visit Italy for Smaller Crowds

Not too long ago, the busy season in Italy was confined to June, July, and August. Travelers flocked to the country during their summer holidays to enjoy good weather and a hearty dose of culture, and for the rest of the year, traffic would slow. Today, though, Italy is such an in-demand destination that its "high season" stretches all the way from May to September — and it seems to be getting longer every year.

Because of this, winter is the best time to avoid crowds. Many visitors to Italy are seeking a warm, sunny Mediterranean vacation, and the country's winter climate — with temperatures in the 40s and 50s in the south and snowy conditions in the north — isn't conducive to those plans. Unless you're headed to an Alpine ski town like Cortina D'Ampezzo, a winter trip to Italy will likely mean uncrowded hotels and piazzas with plenty of elbow room.

Best Times to Visit Italy for Good Weather

"Good weather" in Italy is another concept that's evolved in recent years. Certainly, sun-seeking travelers will still find plenty to enjoy in Italy's warm, largely rain-free summers — but soaring temperatures can make July and August uncomfortable in some regions. Temperatures above 100 degrees are increasingly frequent in southern cities like Rome and Naples, so heat-sensitive travelers may want to avoid the peak of summer in these areas.

For sunny skies and balmy beaches without sky-high heat indices, the best times to visit Italy are the late spring and early fall. Months like May and September offer temperatures in the 70s and 80s through much of the country's south, making conditions ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and taking walking tours through historic towns and cities.

In northern Italy, conditions typically remain pleasant for the duration of the summer, particularly if you're near water or at a high elevation. A getaway to Venice or Lake Como, for instance, can see temperatures in the 60s and 70s even during June, July, and August.

Best Times to Visit Italy by Region

Best times to visit the italian coast.

Spring, summer, and autumn are often heralded as the best times to visit Italy, particularly in temperate coastal towns where extreme weather isn't a concern. The problem with late spring and summer, though, is that everyone has the same idea (including Italians with second homes by the sea). Umbrella and beach chair rental prices are exorbitant, and the beaches can get crowded and noisy. Look instead to smaller villages near the sea, like Terlizzi in Puglia, where the water remains warm through late October and nearby beaches are quiet.

Best Times to Visit Italy's Wine Country

Early spring and early fall can be ideal times to visit Italy if you hope to explore wine regions like Tuscany. The grape harvest occurs each September and October (exact dates vary from year to year), so this can be a fun time for wine lovers.

Best Times to Visit the Dolomites

If you dream of seeing the stunning Dolomites in northeastern Italy, we have good news. The destination is worth visiting year-round, depending on your interests. Hit the ski slopes in winter, or spend spring and summer days hiking and taking in the mountain views.

Best Times to Visit Italy for Lower Prices

Prices in Italy tend to move in tandem with the seasons: when there are lots of visitors, prices are high, and when tourist numbers taper off, so do the costs of airfare and accommodations. If you hope to score a deal on flights or hotel rooms, aim for the off-season of October to April. This is especially true in popular cities like Rome and Florence. While these metro areas can be pricey and packed at any time, things do slow down in winter.

Of course, there are other ways to save money on your Italian vacation besides just aiming for the off-season. Keep an eye out for flight deals, or check out cruise packages that can help you avoid expensive hotels and flights. Finally, consider traveling off the beaten path to the small towns and quaint villages that most tourists skip — even during busy periods, these can make for affordable vacations.

Worst Times to Visit Italy

Italy is a beautiful destination year-round, but if you want to avoid packed tour buses, long museum lines, and extreme heat, you probably don't want to plan a summer getaway to Rome, Venice, or Florence. Carnival season — typically February and March — is another less than ideal time in Venice if you aren't a fan of crowds. Hotels are at a premium, and the city's bridges, boats, and attractions may lose their charm as they fill with thousands of mask-wearing revelers. For a calmer version of Venice, the northern lagoon in November is sublime.

Tuscany can also be a tricky region for solitude-seeking travelers, given its mass popularity. Cities like Siena and medieval hilltop towns like San Gimignano can be full of tourists in the summer and autumn, so try planning your trip for the winter or spring to see slightly smaller crowds.

No matter where you're going, be sure to take note of any major local holidays planned during the dates of your visit. For example, Christmas is a beautiful time to explore Italy thanks to charming holiday markets and festive decor, but some shops and attractions will be closed or have restricted hours around the holiday. Easter pilgrimages, meanwhile, are beloved among Catholic travelers wanting to see the Vatican — but their popularity also means that prices will be higher and crowds larger during Holy Week than during the rest of the spring.

Here are the reasons to travel to Japan during off-peak season

Visiting the Japanese archipelago off-season can be a great idea, with many advantages compared with traveling at the most popular times. Discover another side of Japan...

The peak tourist seasons of Japan are mainly during the periods of hanami (cherry blossoms) and koyo (red maple leaves), occurring respectively from early March to mid-May, and from early October to late November. The low Japanese seasons are the two months of summer, and particularly the months of December, January and February. Winter is undoubtedly the least-visited season of the year for tourists.

So, what are some of the benefits of visiting Japan off-season?

Raisonnable prices

This is definitely worth taking into account! In low season, many prices are lower. This will help with the two biggest expenses of any trip, namely the flights and accommodation . With far more affordable prices at off-peak times, this can, for example, give you the opportunity to afford a stay at a very nice ryokan (traditional inn), complete with meals, which might have been impossible during high season when availability is low and prices soar! Not only that, but by booking in advance you can make even better savings.

Our guide : Visting Japan on a budget

Alone in the world

It may not seem like a big deal at first, but when you're traveling at a less popular time, you'll avoid the crowds . It's admittedly not ideal to walk around Nikko , explore the foot of Mount Fuji or wander through picturesque Gion among hordes of tourists... In January or February, you can visit the most popular tourist places in complete tranquility and get that picture-perfect shot. There will also be shorter queues at entrances to museums and temples. Do yourself a favor and avoid the extra stress!

Enjoy winter-specific activities

Visiting in January and February gives you the chance to see Japan in a whole new light. The landscapes are beautiful and appear completely different in winter, sometimes even under a layer of snow, which creates a magical atmosphere . In addition, the weather, although cold, remains pleasant during the Japanese winter, which tends to be rather dry and sunny.

A lesser known event than the hanami can also make your winter trip special: the flowering of the ume , Japanese plum trees. They bloom as early as February in Tokyo and Kansai (Kyoto and Osaka region), and their intense pink flowers appear in parks and temples all over.

Winter is also the best time to admire Mount Fuji , its summit covered with snow, as there are usually fewer clouds in winter. It is also the ideal time to enjoy an  onsen , especially outdoors (rotenburo) . What could be better than enjoying the steaming hot waters surrounded by charming snow-dusted landscapes?

See : 5 onsen with a view

Winter can also be an opportunity to try skiing , as well as to discover what Hokkaido has to offer, including the impressive Sapporo Snow Festival .

And in summer?

Of course, the summer also has much to offer visitors! Certainly, the heat and humidity of the Japanese summer is not for everyone. However, Japan has some beautiful beaches to cool off at, so this season can be an opportunity to relax, and perhaps even enjoy the incredible beaches of the islands of Okinawa .

In addition, summer is the period of matsuri , traditional annual festivals. In Kyoto especially, the streets come alive in the evening, and some events shouldn't be missed, like Gion Matsuri and its parades of floats, or Motomiya festival at Fushimi Inari shrine, where temples and the tunnels of  torii gates are adorned with thousands of red lanterns... Finally, July and August are also the time of year for fireworks displays   (hanabi) , which the Japanese take to a whole new level!

SPOILER ALERT: The following interview discusses events from the “ Young Sheldon ” episode “A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture,” streaming on Paramount+ as of May 10.

We knew it was going to happen — since it was foretold on “The Big Bang Theory” — but that didn’t make it any easier to say goodbye to one of “Young Sheldon’s” original cast members. In the final moments in the second of two episodes airing back-to-back on May 9, the Cooper family received word that curmudgeon patriarch George Cooper (Lance Barber) had died of a heart attack.

Popular on Variety

Here, Holland also shares how the writers figured out how (and when) to portray George’s death, how Barber took the news about his character dying and what other information from “The Big Bang Theory” needed to be honored.

You guys have done this before, when you wrapped up “The Big Bang Theory.”But how challenging was it to land all the points you wanted before the end of the series?

Since you’ve been asked about it for the last seven years, planning George’s death, did you guys know this is how you wanted to play it? Or was it something you kept going back and forth on?

We always knew we were going to address it this season. We always knew we were going to get to the funeral this season. And we always knew that George’s death would happen off screen, that we didn’t want to witness it. It was just a question of when. There was a version of this, as we talked about it earlier on, where it would have been: The finale would have been the death and the funeral. I think it was Chuck [Lorre, executive producer] who said, “This is mostly a positive, uplifting show. Let’s not leave the audience deep in their grief. Let’s watch the family start to piece itself back together, and let’s end with a little hope.” So then that re-shifted when we were going to do it.

And then also, just because we know some people are expecting it, I know there’s a lot of talk of whether it’s going to happen or not going to happen, but people who know “Big Bang” are expecting it. We wanted to do it in a way that was hopefully a little surprising. So that’s why it happens at the end of [Episode 12] — we thought maybe we can catch people off guard. Even though they know it’s going to come, maybe they won’t see it coming then.

Touching on “Big Bang,” we’ve known that George died when Sheldon is 14, but were there other details from the show that you had to live up to?

It was pretty much just his age. And to be honest, even “Big Bang” canon isn’t entirely consistent. It got more consistent. We know it was 14 and we know that Sheldon goes to Caltech right afterwards and leaves Georgie and the rest of the family behind grieving. Those were the two pieces that we knew.

Was it a tough conversation to have with Lance Barber, since he knew this could be coming?

He’s known since the beginning of the show that George Sr. had an expiration date. We slowed time down a little bit. Like, we extended it because the kids, our actual cast members Raegan and Iain, are 16 in real life. We stretched one year out into a couple seasons to keep Lance alive as far as long as we could. But he always knew this was coming.

And I think also it being the last season made it a little easier on him that there wasn’t going to be seasons going forward that he wasn’t going to get to be a part of, but he was great because he really wanted to be there.

In Episode 12, George gets a college coaching job offer that would take him and the family to Houston. What did that story say for the character and the family?

Talk to me about the last time we and the family sees George alive. He’s just going to work like an ordinary morning without any grand moment. Why?

We really talked a lot about that. It was interesting how much work we put into a scene where nothing exciting happened, and we kept making sure that was the case. We thought a lot about the reality of the situation is that you don’t recognize that these are big moments going into them. You only recognize that these are big moments in retrospect. And dad leaving for work is a thing that happens every day. There was no reason for anyone to stop and think, you know, this moment is special. We also thought that moving forward it left them with a little bit more regret that they didn’t appreciate those moments, but it just really felt like that was very real.

We even pulled out where no one says goodbye to him. We kept pulling things away [from the scene] so no one had a moment. For Missy, he offers her a ride to school and she says she’ll take the bus. Sheldon doesn’t even look up. Mary’s on him about making sure he’s not going to be late later on. No one even says goodbye to him.

We see a few people come back in episode 712, like Sheldon’s childhood friend, Tam (Ryan Phuong) and we see a couple of the teachers at the school. Was there a lot of talk about who you would bring back?

Yeah, definitely. There were certainly some characters that we wanted to acknowledge because they’ve been such an important part of the show. It would have been great to bring back Jason Alexander [who played Sheldon’s teacher Gene Lundy in five episodes], who we love. Some things just didn’t work out logistically, and it didn’t make sense in the story. But Tam had been such a big part of the story, and with Sheldon’s friend — and also trying to keep alive “Big Bang” canon when Sheldon goes off to Caltech, and Tam stays behind with his girlfriend. So trying to make a nod that to Sheldon, they’re still best friends. And then Mr. Givens, and we love Brian Stepanek who plays him.

In the last scene of the episode when the family gets the news that George has died, of course, Missy, Mary and Connie just break down immediately. But was there a lot of discussion about how Sheldon would react? Or was that an easy choice given the character, and how he deals with emotion?

We knew that Sheldon would process things internally, that Sheldon is not an outward emotive person. So it was really just about the details like, is he standing and does he sit or is he already sitting? It was really fine tuning those small details to get the exact right moment for him. But no, the thought that he would not outwardly express his grief was always baked into the character.

Was it a challenge for Iain Armitage not to just unload his emotions because this big moment’s happening that they’ve all known was coming?

What should we expect in those final two episodes airing next Thursday?

You know, the Coopers have to deal with their grief over the death of George Sr. And Sheldon has to prepare to start his life journey onto Caltech in California.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

2024 NFL schedule: Ranking eight potential Chiefs opponents for season opener

Who could kansas city play in week 1.

patrick-mahomes-lamar-jackson-chiefs-ravens.jpg

The Kansas City Chiefs  will be looking to make history in the 2024 NFL season. Kansas City became the NFL's first repeat champions since the 2003-04 New England Patriots , and the Chiefs are now set up to attempt a three-peat. Both Travis Kelce and Andy Reid will be back in 2024 and the team re-loaded at wide receiver, so the Chiefs have a legit shot to make history.

The road to a three-peat begins in Week 1, where the Chiefs will host the NFL opener for the second straight year. Who could the Chiefs face first next season? Which teams are on the table, and who would be the best opponent? Let's rank the Chiefs' eight home opponents that could make the trip to Arrowhead in September.

8. New Orleans Saints

The 9-8 Saints missed the playoffs in 2023, and new quarterback Derek Carr didn't exactly endear himself to the Saints faithful in his first season. New Orleans has some talented weapons like Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara , and a decent defense led by Dennis Allen. But scheduling the Saints in Week 1 would not be a sexy decision.

7.   Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs surprised many people in 2023 by winning the NFC South with a 9-8 record, and then upsetting the reigning NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in Super Wild Card Weekend. Baker Mayfield had a career year working with Mike Evans , and both players have said they want to return to Tampa Bay in 2024. The Bucs lost Dave Canales but gained an interesting offensive coordinator in Liam Coen, so the offense should look a bit different. Mayfield is a fun gamer who could be even more comfortable in Year 2 with the Bucs.

6. Denver Broncos

The Broncos snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs last October, but fans in Denver would like to ignore the fact that Mahomes was dealing with the flu less than 24 hours before kickoff. Opening up your season against a divisional opponent does add some intrigue, but we don't know who the Broncos quarterback will be.

5. Las Vegas Raiders

Another revenge spot against a divisional opponent. The Raiders, of course, defeated the Chiefs in Kansas City on Christmas Day behind Antonio Pierce's stout defense. There's now optimism in Vegas, and it's always fun to watch Maxx Crosby chase Mahomes around the field, but this is another situation where we don't know who the starting quarterback will be.

4. Los Angeles Chargers

Welcome back to the NFL, Jim Harbaugh. The Chargers are always seemingly one of those teams that receives hype in the offseason they can't live up to, but with Harbaugh calling the shots instead of Brandon Staley, you have to keep an eye on them.

Justin Herbert's offenses have averaged 24.4 points per game, which are the second-most points per game averaged by a quarterback with a losing record since 1950. Herbert has been let down by his defense ever since he entered the league. He's registered the most passing completions (1,613) and passing yards (17,223) in a player's first four seasons in NFL history, and tied Mahomes for the second-most passing touchdowns (114) in his first four seasons as well. With Harbaugh now the head coach, we could start the new chapter of this rivalry in prime time in Week 1.

3. Houston Texans

The first meeting between Mahomes and C.J. Stroud . Maybe this is a budding AFC rivalry we will see plenty of in the years to come. The Offensive Rookie of the Year became the youngest quarterback to ever win a playoff game this past season, and led the league in passing yards per game (273.9) and TD-INT ratio. Only two other quarterbacks have done that over the last 50 seasons! Stroud found success with weapons like Nico Collins and Tank Dell immediately, plus DeMeco Ryans improved the defense. Houston allowed the sixth-fewest rushing yards per game in 2023 after the Texans ranked dead last in that category in 2022.

The Texans were expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2023. Instead, the front office crushed the draft with the NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year, leading to the Texans winning the division and a postseason victory. Maybe they are a contender in 2024.

2. Cincinnati Bengals

What a way to welcome Joe Burrow back to the field following his 2023 season-ending wrist injury. Let's send him straight to Arrowhead to face off against his chief AFC rival in Mahomes. Burrow is actually 2-0 vs. Mahomes in the regular season, and 1-1 vs. him in the postseason. The Chiefs-Bengals rivalry has been entertaining to say the least. Kicking off the 2024 season with this matchup would be a fun idea.

1. Baltimore Ravens

The most fascinating Week 1 matchup for the Chiefs would undoubtedly be the Ravens -- the team the Chiefs upset in the AFC championship game. Lamar Jackson won MVP this season, but that award couldn't have felt as good to receive considering that his offense fell flat against the Chiefs defense, which held the Ravens to a season-low 81 rushing yards and the lowest time of possession (22:30) in Jackson's career.

The Ravens were probably the best team in the NFL this past regular season. They became the first franchise to ever lead/co-lead the league in scoring defense, sacks and takeaways, while OC Todd Monken returned Jackson to MVP form in his first year as offensive coordinator. This is the season opener the NFL world is hoping for.
