We used Options Travel Group to get out of our timeshare. We had been scammed before by a company said they would sell my timeshare; thus we were VERY hesitant. The person we met with was very professional and answered all of our questions. She has truly been a support person, as she promised, through the whole process. We were out in a little over 4 months. Everything done as promised. We did have a little issue contacting the person assigned to get us out for updates. I called the person I met with at the presentation, she contacted corporate and I got my update within a couple hours. The travel program: We were explained we could use the Premier Options Club to go to the same timeshares used when owned our deed with the additional benefit of not paying those absurd Timeshare maintenance fees, or having to plan a year plus in advance. We were hesitant when told we would have unlimited access to all the timeshares with unlimited weeks. In the past 9 months, we have stayed 5 weeks in a timeshare, been able to 'upgrade' to better quality timeshares, and not having to plan out very far. Hope our experience can help others get out too.

On 4/11/19 after 5 hours of questioning, protestations and coercion, I signed an agreement with Leisure to exit me from my Westgate timeshare along with mandatory membership in Leisure Getaways club for $4,512. I felt remorse, read all the negative reviews and signs of a scam then canceled the AMEX card at 5am and put the charge in dispute. I sent an email later to cancel the contract. I have tried contacting Leisure Getaways on numerous ocassions. Without any call back. Specifically Benjamin, i have left 4 messages for him with out any response. These people are formerly Legacy Adventures, Inc. principals who are very unethical in dealing with timeshare owners. They promise transfer, however, after our executing all proper documents, they inform us they have sold the company. The same people who worked for Legacy ripped us off with a transfer fee. Options travel is affiliated with Leisure Travel a company that sales timeshares. This company is fraud. I have a contract with them to sale my timeshare. I paid $2, 800.00 and I still owe my timeshare. The promised to have the timeshare transferred to a new buyer with in a year and if not they would pay my maintenance fee. At first they would respond to my calls and provide an update. I have not heard from them Feb. 2020. I call and their phones are no longer in service. For several months I've repeatedly tried to get status and access to the service in order to book a vacation but they keep charging me and fail to return my calls, emails and requests for assistance. Great way to finally stop paying maintenance fees for my timeshare. My needs had changed for travel and this has proven to be most useful for me. The people are great to work with (my contact was John Murray) to work out any hiccups when they occur. It took a several months for the transfer to occur, but it did happen.  

They promised they would get us out of our timeshare, and they did! Met with Jared F in Columbus today and he explained more about Club 365, very helpful! He even said if we had problems with it later he would be glad to work with us on a Zoom call.  

Paid option Invoice & paid to extend RCI points only to have Options advise RCI 3 months later we no longer have an account. RCI says it is my responsibility to resolve with Options. Brian in Options accounting very sarcastic finally agreed to research and resolve with RCI - to date no response - terrible customer service

WASHINGTON — Craving some warm weather this spring break? We know how you feel... and so do cybercriminals.

So we're verifying what to look out for right now when you're scheduling a flight.

 Our source is the Better Business Bureau, who issued a warning that "scammers" are creating lookalike websites mimicking travel programs like TSA pre-check and Global Entry.

"You think that you're...actually on TSA’s website, you think that you're either working directly with a reputable third party who could help you sign up, and they do look legitimate," Kelsey Coleman, Director of Communications for the BBB in Metro - Washington, D.C.

Here’s how it works: if you search online for a travel program, chances are the true site will be near the top; however, the BBB warms you may also get copycat websites that look identical to the legit one.

The Better Business Bureau says those fake sites may ask you to pony up a hefty fee or fill out sensitive info.

"Even if you pay up, the company may never submit your application form through the correct channels," they warn online . "You will have lost money and shared your personal information with scammers."

Coleman says they received nationally more than 300 reports of travel and vacation fraud last year.

You can report something fishy to the BBB Scam Tracker at  www.bbb.org/scamtracker

“We take this information, and we give it to the FTC, the FBI, local law enforcement, again, to try to stop these schemes as a whole,” Coleman said.

Here are some steps you can take right now:

• Double check you have the correct link 
• Look for signs that the link is secure and starts with "https" 
• If its a government website it should end in ".gov"

If you can, the BBB recommends paying by credit card, that way you can try and dispute it.

"It's very important to take your time and to make sure you're actually dealing with the right site," Coleman said.

Don't let a dream vacation become a nightmare: How to avoid travel scams

As we settle into winter and begin to dream of warm locales to get away, be careful of an increasing number of travel scams, the Better Business Bureau warns. 

The BBB national Scam Tracker has tracked multiple reports of travel scams involving fake airline and booking sites and phone numbers.  

In 2021, BBB's Scam Tracker had 339 reported scams involving travel. The total reported lost on travel scams in 2021 on BBB's Scam Tracker exceeded $350,000. Scams range from time lost and personal security information threatened to tens of thousands on any single report. 

Most reports mention consumers booking a flight or vacation deal with what appeared to be a legitimate site or a major airline phone number.

'They should've helped me': Booking through third parties like Expedia leaves some travelers stranded

But then, after the booking, consumers never received a confirmation email or information about the trip. Many consumers never receive booking information. Others are soon contacted by the scammers stating the "deal" was expired or canceled. The scammer then offers a different deal for a higher price. The scammers urge consumers to provide credit card details or to make larger purchases by canceling the previous "deal" and booking another.

How to report a scam

Consumers have reported contacting the major airlines and finding out the booking information does not exist. Travelers have been stranded at airports after only one legitimate ticket purchase. Others report several repeating charges made after the initial purchase.

Some reported scam websites are PSSTravel.net, EDreams.net, [email protected] , and Esky.com, the BBB said. 

Tips to spot a travel scam

► The Better Business Bureau reminds consumers to be sure the website or contact information is from a legitimate business or to verify with the airline before providing any payment or personal information.

► Be especially wary of sites that use third parties to buy flight tickets.

► Just because the travel site looks nice does not mean it is trustworthy. 

► “No matter who you suspect may be on the phone, I would recommend never giving out personal information to an unsolicited caller,” said Akron BBB President and CEO Shannon Siegferth. “If you suspect a scam, hang up. If you feel the call was legitimate, verify the number independently and then call back. Do not feel pressured with time or let 'a deal' limit your due diligence in proper research of any organization prior to purchasing.” 

► Siegferth also suggests looking through a company's website, checking reviews and verifying that the organization is an accredited business with BBB.

“We advise consumers to ensure the company they are looking to purchase from clearly and prominently provides a direct and effective means to contact the organization. This includes a phone number, physical address and email address,” Siegferth said. 

► As with any scam, be leery if you are asked to send money upfront or via wire transfer or to pay via gift card, the BBB said. Communicate directly with your bank or other financial institution if you are suspicious of fraudulent charges. Your bank or financial institution will have an accurate account of your transactions and easily be able to know if your account has been compromised. 

► If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Scammers continue to evolve and pivot with their approach. Never assume you won't become a victim to some type of scam. The BBB said it sees scams happen to people  of all ages, and it is important to remember we all can be targets.

Sketchy firms are targeting older timeshare owners with hollow promises to get them out of their contracts for a hefty upfront fee.

Timeshare owner Ed Roach, of Maplewood, Mo., still remembers the telephone call he got in 2017 from a timeshare exit firm claiming to be associated with Wyndham resorts. Timeshare policies change regularly, the caller noted, inviting him to a seminar to learn about the latest developments. Plus, he’d get a free dinner and an iPad.

Roach, now 74, a retired medical lab technologist, showed up for the seminar at a nearby hotel and soon found himself alarmed. Your children will inherit the debt burden of paying your timeshare maintenance fees, which can reach $2,000 or more per year, the timeshare exit firm’s presenter claimed. And hurricanes and other weather disasters will cause your fees to keep going up, the presenter claimed.

Roach and his wife enjoyed the timeshare in Panama City Beach, Fla., for which they paid $75,000 more than two decades ago. But they worried about saddling their two adult children with its costs and about paying for it if their health declined and they couldn’t travel. The exit firm said it could take the timeshare off their hands immediately. So Roach paid the exit firm’s “required” $25,000 fee upfront on his credit card. “I just kind of panicked,” Roach says. “They did a really good job of selling the fear.”

But after five or six days, no one contacted Roach about the timeshare. He called the exit firm repeatedly, finally reaching a salesperson who didn’t know anything about his contract. Roach and his wife decided to cancel, given the red flags, but the exit firm said it was too late. And as Roach learned, the timeshare exit firm wasn’t even associated with Wyndham. Roach lost his $25,000, and he still has his timeshare. And the iPad that he was promised for showing up? It was only a cheap knock-off.

Older timeshare owners like Roach are targets for a growing number of timeshare exit companies that inundate owners with direct mailings, telemarketing, and free lunch and dinner seminar invitations, claiming they can release them from their timeshare obligations—for a fee. About 9.6 million households own some type of timeshare.

Complaints about timeshare exit companies are escalating, says Michelle Corey, president of the Better Business Bureau in St. Louis. The St. Louis BBB received more than 350 consumer complaints from around the U.S. between 2017 and 2019 regarding numerous Springfield, Mo.–based timeshare exit businesses. The companies collected more than $2.2 million from consumers in at least 46 states but never got them out of their timeshare contracts, the BBB says.

Resort developers do not partner with timeshare exit firms, according to the American Resort Development Association (ARDA), the trade association for the vacation ownership and resort development industries. Wyndham and other developers have filed lawsuits against timeshare exit firms, alleging false advertising and misleading claims . The owner of the timeshare exit firm that Roach paid money to told the BBB he was closing his companies down, according to the BBB.

The companies operate in southwest Missouri to be near Branson, Mo., a popular vacation and tourist destination. Many victims are retirees in their seventies and eighties.

“Retirees are in desperate need to get rid of timeshares with escalating annual maintenance fees, and they’re finding there really is no market for resale,” Corey says. “They thought their properties would appreciate in value over time, but that did not happen. Now they’re trying to unload them.”

Older owners typically stop using their timeshares when they can no longer travel because of age or illness. But timeshares often sell for as low as $1 on the internet, giving them few options. “The vast majority of owners have no idea their timeshares are basically worth nothing,” says Brian Rogers, founder of Timeshare Users Group , an online forum for timeshare owners.

Timeshare exit companies typically charge upfront fees ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 and promise a money-back guarantee if they don’t get an owner out of a contract within 12 to 18 months, although some firms work on a longer timeline of 36 months. By the time owners realize they are being scammed, the companies have closed down or gone bankrupt, or they simply never get the owner out of the timeshare. Some of the exit companies falsely tell owners their timeshare deed has been transferred and to stop paying maintenance fees; owners eventually discover that their timeshare is in foreclosure and their credit is damaged.

The BBB says that many of the companies holding timeshare-relief presentations don’t do the exit work and instead subcontract it to law firms and other entities. The companies never pay the subcontractors, or the subcontractors get paid but don’t complete the work.

If you’re trying to get out of a timeshare contract, don’t pay upfront money to a company or a lawyer promising to help you. A money-back guarantee from a scammer is worthless, and timeshare exit companies are not regulated, says Robert Clements, general counsel for ARDA.

Read any contract you may be offered closely; some timeshare firms contend in the fine print that a foreclosure on your timeshare is considered an exit “success,” Clements says. If a company promises to put your money in escrow, understand that you have no assurances the firm won’t just keep it. “It’s sad, because these companies are taking so much money and leaving consumers in the dark,” he says. “This is a multimillion-dollar consumer protection issue that is happening all around the country.”

A Safer Route to Get Rid of an Unwanted Timeshare

If you’re looking to exit your timeshare contract, reach out to your resort management company or timeshare developer directly. Ask if it has a deed-back or surrender program to free you from your obligation. Companies sometimes allow owners to surrender their timeshares, although you may have to prepay maintenance or other fees. You don’t need a timeshare exit company to help you do this. The exit firms sometimes contact the resorts to surrender the timeshares of clients who don’t realize they could do it themselves and avoid paying an intermediary.

Don’t be frightened into signing up with an exit company because you worry about burdening your children with a timeshare after you die. Anyone who inherits a timeshare has the option to decline it, says Dennis Beaver, a Bakersfield, Calif., consumer lawyer.

Don’t pay upfront fees to a timeshare donation company, either. Some will charge you several thousand dollars to coordinate your donation and promise you a sizeable charitable deduction. But you can only deduct your timeshare’s fair market value—which may be zero. Also, few charities accept timeshares, and unscrupulous donation companies may not actually release you from your ownership or your maintenance fees.

Keep an Eye Out for the Latest Travel Scams

Don’t let criminals steal your fun with fake booking sites, bogus deals and other rip-offs.

Americans ages 50 and up say they plan to spend more than $6,650 dollars on vacations in 2024, and about half say they’ll spend more than in 2023, an  AARP survey  found.

Yet our vacation fantasies can have a dark side. Scammers can turn your dream trip into a financial nightmare: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received more than 55,000 reports of fraud linked to travel, vacations and time-share plans in 2023, and travel is one of its top 10 fraud categories. Thirty percent of Americans have been scammed or know someone who’s fallen victim while booking or taking trips, and 34 percent lost $1,000 or more, according to a 2023 survey by online protection company McAfee.

Common travel scams

1. Fraudulent travel services online

There are loads of fake travel company websites touting hotels, car rentals or other services. You can often find clues (such as misspellings) that a site isn’t legit, but AI tools can help criminals create more professional-looking websites, without the typos and grammar mistakes, says attorney and scam authority Steven Weisman. Scammers create these sites “to lure you into clicking on malware-infected links or provid[ing] credit card or debit card information,” Weisman notes on his website,  Scamicide.com .

2. Free trips and bargains from unsolicited sources

Bogus travel deals can arrive through emails, text messages, social media, postcards, robocalls and online pop-up ads. Even if they look real — some scammers copy the logos of legitimate businesses — treat these offers with extreme caution. They will typically advertise free trips to get your attention, then charge hundreds of dollars in fees and taxes, the FTC warns. Specifics about the trip are often missing: Instead you’ll see vague references to “five-star” resorts or “luxury” cruises (AARP offers specific advice on  cruise scams ). “If the organizer can’t or won’t give you more specific details, like the address of the hotel or the cruise company’s name, walk away,” the FTC states. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

3. Vacation rental scams

Scammers can “hijack real rental listings and advertise them as their own, so when you show up for your vacation, you find out that other people are also booked for the same property,” according to the FTC. Not only do scammers copy a legitimate listing and add their own names and contact info but they frequently list a seriously low price to attract potential renters, Weisman says. Or they’ll tell potential renters that the owner is out of the country, that numerous people are interested in the property and that they need to wire money to be considered. “There’s no question that sites like Airbnb or Vrbo do a good job at trying to police their sites,” Weisman notes. “But they can’t be perfect, and you can’t rely on them being accurate.”

4. Unscrupulous and fraudulent travel “professionals”

If you search for travel scams on the  Better Business Bureau (BBB) Scam Tracker , you’ll find numerous complaints about bogus travel agencies, third-party booking companies, solicitations for free vacations and time-share memberships (check out this AARP guide on  time-share exit scams ). Some complaints involve bait-and-switch practices. Others involve complete deception. A man recently reported losing $440 when a travel consultant, who’d lied about his credentials, said he’d paid the client’s flight cancellation fee but hadn’t. Another consumer said she lost $975 after a travel agent was supposed to book her a hotel in Aruba but took the cash instead.

5. Hotel credit card scams.

Some scammers will call your hotel room (often in the middle of the night), claim they’re from the front desk and say they need to verify your credit card information due to a computer glitch. “Hang up immediately and contact the front desk to verify the call,” recommends the Arkansas attorney general’s office. Another scam, according to Weisman: You arrive in your room and find a flyer underneath the door to order pizza or other food, but the phony menu is from a scammer who wants you to order dinner to get your credit card number.

How to protect yourself from travel scams

Determine if a website is real.  You can look up a domain to confirm whether it’s legit using  WhoIs.com  ; enter the site’s URL and you’ll find out who owns it and where the owner resides. “When a site for Hyatt or Hertz is based in Nigeria, you know you’ve got a problem,” Weisman says. Also be suspicious if you don’t see a contact page or a physical address, phone number or email address on the site.

Don’t trust phone numbers.  Scammers can impersonate phone numbers through a process known as caller ID spoofing. If you’re renting a car, for example, confirm that you’re dialing a real customer service department (and that you’re using a legitimate company website to find contact info) before you call or click to reserve your rental.

Do your homework.  If you are planning to rent or use a travel booking agency, do some research before working with them. Search for the company’s name online, along with words like “scam,” “review” or “complaint” and see what pops up. Also check for complaints on the  BBB website . “If you’re looking at a car rental company that you haven’t heard of, and it’s a great deal, be skeptical — especially if they tell you to act now because it’s such a great price,” Weisman says. Ask people you know and trust for referrals.

Be cautious of travel businesses that ask you to pay before confirming reservations.  “Most reputable travel agents will confirm before payment,” says the Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. And stick with reputable companies.

Avoid using search terms like “cheap rental cars.”  Words like “cheap” can draw a higher number of bogus companies among your search results. And sometimes phony companies can appear higher in search results than real companies, says Weisman. A scammer might purchase an ad for the phony website, for example, which places it near the top of the search.

Confirm who really owns a vacation rental.  “Search online for the rental location’s address, together with the name of the property owner or rental company,” the FTC suggests. “If other ads come up for the same address but with a different owner or rental company name, that’s a sign of a scam.” When Weisman wanted to rent a place on Cape Cod, he went to the tax assessor’s website. “The name of the person who was supposedly renting it to me wasn’t the name of the owner,” he says. “That’s always a good indication that it’s not legitimate.”

Never pay for travel services or rentals with a gift card or by wiring money.  Scammers want you to pay this way — or with  cryptocurrency  — because “once they’ve collected the money, it’s almost impossible to get it back,” the FTC states. It’s safest to pay with a credit card, which has more protections than even debit cards. The same is true with services like  Zelle and Venmo , adds Weisman. “They should never be used for commercial transactions, because they lack the fraud protection of a credit card,” he says.

Be wary of Wi-Fi.  Whether you’re at an airport or a coffee shop, connecting to public Wi-Fi can expose your personal information to hackers. Instead, connect to the internet via your smartphone’s hot spot or purchase a virtual private network (VPN), which encrypts your data.

Avoid third-party visa programs.  Americans are required to obtain visas when visiting certain countries, such as India and Australia. Third-party websites often promise to provide visas quickly for a fee, but many are scams that seek not only cash but personal information for identity theft. Instead, go to the  U.S. State Department Bureau of Consular Affairs website . You’ll find procedures and links for the countries you’re planning to visit.

What to do if you’ve been targeted in a travel scam

• Report fraud to the  FTC online  or by calling 877-382-4357.
• File a complaint with your state’s attorney general. The National Association of Attorneys General  ConsumerResources.org  website has contact info for each state.
