Once upon a time, Spain had one of the most backward train networks in western Europe. Now, they have one of the best, indeed, one of my favourite rail systems. High-speed AVE trains (Alta Velocidad Española) link major cities at up to 300 km/h (186mph), and if you book in advance online you can find some great cheap fares. This page will give you a heads-up on how to travel cheaply around Spain by train.
A guide to taking the train in Spain
International trains to & from Spain
Other train travel information, useful country information, spain by train, the key things to know.
Avlo is a lo-cost subsidiary of Renfe which runs Barcelona-Madrid, other routes planned. Their trains are one class only, with no-catering.
Ouigo Spain is a lo-cost subsidiary of SNCF (French Railways) which runs Barcelona-Madrid, Madrid-Valencia & Madrid-Alicante, other routes planned. Two class, with basic catering.
Elige (Choice) = A semi-flexible fare, you can choose between Elige (2nd class seat) or for a higher price, Elige Confort (1st class seat).
Now for the catch, and it's some catch that Catch 22: You can only buy a Tarjeta Dorada in person at a Renfe station when you get to Spain. You cannot buy it online. But you can't buy tickets online in advance with the Tarjeta Dorada discount until after you've bought the card because you need to enter the card number to get the discount. So if you're planning a trip to Spain, it's better to forget about being senior and just buy a normal adult advance-purchase ticket now for perhaps €30 without any Tarjeta Dorada discount, than to wait until you get to Spain to buy a Tarjeta Dorada to get 25% off a fare which by that time (on or close to departure date) might have risen to €90. Just let that sink in...
How to buy tickets & check train times
You can buy tickets at any Renfe station or online at www.renfe.com , but see the advice on using Renfe.com below . There's no booking fee, but Renfe.com is a pain to use with some confusing translations and quirks, it's also known for sometimes rejecting overseas payment cards. It's far easier (and quicker!) to buy tickets in plain English using www.thetrainline.com (in €, £ or $, small booking fee, works for anyone from any country) or www.raileurope.com ( various currencies, small booking fee), Omio.com (various currencies, small booking fee) or www.petrabax.com (in US$, with a small mark-up). These websites all connect to Renfe's ticketing system and sell the same trains at the same prices with no payment problems and the same official Renfe print-at-home tickets.
Real time information
You can see whether a train is on time and which platform it will leave from, if you download thetrainline.com 's app and run an enquiry for today. Trainline's app show real time information for all operators, Renfe, Avlo, Iryo & Ouigo.
Combinado Cercanias : Free suburban travel with a long-distance ticket
When you buy a ticket for one of Renfe's long-distance trains (AVE, EuroMed, Alvia, Intercity) of any fare type in any class for a journey within Spain, you get free travel from any Renfe suburban station at the start of your journey and free travel to any Renfe suburban station at the end of your journey, in the following cities:
Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cadiz, Madrid, Malaga, Murcia/Alicante, San Sebastian, Santander, Seville, Valencia and Zaragoza. You also get free travel from/to any FEVE local station in Asturias, Santander, Bilbao & Cartagena.
If your ticket includes this, it will say Combinado Cercanias in the corner with a reference number.
At your starting city, you must use the suburban ticket within 3 hours of your long-distance train departure, and at your destination you must use the suburban ticket within 4 hours of your long-distance train's arrival.
You can travel to or from any suburban station within that city's numbered zones, but not outside the zones - so longer rural routes such as Barcelona to Portbou or Latour de Carol are not included.
Different cities have different processes: To access the suburban (Cercanias) platforms in Madrid, Barcelona or Malaga, place the QR code of your long-distance ticket against the scanner on the Cercanias ticket gates and they will open. In some cities, you may need to use the Combinado Cercanias code printed on your ticket to get a Cercanias ticket out of one of the Cercanias ticket machines, or go to a ticket window.
Add a meal box to your booking in Elige Confort on AVE & EuroMed . You can add a meal box to your booking if you buy an Elige fare for Confort class on AVE , EuroMed or some Alvia trains at Renfe.com. You can add it when you book or afterwards, at least 12h before the train leaves its origin station. You can't add it if you use 3rd party retailers.

Spanish train fares & classes explained
In July 2021, Renfe introduced a completely new fares structure for all its long-distance trains including the high-speed AVE, and also changed the terms it uses for 1st & 2nd class. It's easy to get confused between what's a class of accommodation and what's a fare type, so here's a run-down of Renfe's new classes & fares.
Standard & Comfort class
Básico, elige & premium fares.
Elige (Choice). A semi-flexible fare. If you select this you get a choice of Elige to travel in Standard (2nd) class or Elige Confort at a higher price to travel in Comfort (1st) class but without any included food or access to lounges. Elige & Elige Confort tickets are refundable & changeable for a fee.
Railpasses for Spain
Option 1, eurail & interrail passes.
Unfortunately, Interrail & Eurail passes do not offer hop on, hop off convenience in Spain because all Spanish long-distance train and even some regional trains require a reservation, for Interrail & Eurail passholders this costs around €10 for AVEs and similar front-rank trains or €7 for lesser trains. This must be factored into your budget.
The next issue is that Interrail & Eurail reservations for Spanish trains often can't be made online. Passholder reservations for most front-rank high-speed AVE trains can now be made online using the Interrail/Eurail reservations service and some Alvia and Intercity trains can also be booked this way. However, others can't be booked online at all and most Media Distancia trains can't be booked online either, you have to go to a station when you reach Spain. More about how to make Interrail/Eurail passholder reservations in Spain .
Option 2, Renfe's Spain Pass
Renfe offer its own Spain Pass to anyone resident outside Spain. This can be better value as it includes all reservations, no hidden costs. However, unlike Interrail & Eurail passes it does not give unlimited travel. One journey = 1 train ride, if you change trains, that's 2 journeys.
You can buy a Renfe Spain Pass giving either 4, 6, 8 or 10 individual one-way train journeys of any length in a one-month period on all of Renfe's long-distance & medium-distance trains, including AVE, EuroMed, Alvia, Intercity, Media Distancia & Avant.
With the Renfe Spain Pass, reservations can be made for free and there are no extra fees or quotas - if there is an empty seat on the train, you're entitled to it with your Spain Pass, although be warned that Spanish high-speed trains can indeed get fully-booked close to departure date.
How to buy a Renfe Spain pass
You can buy a Spain pass online at www.renfe.com/es/en.../renfe-spain-pass (has a few quirky translations and sometimes struggles with some credit cards). The passes are completely electronic. After setting up an account and buying your own pass, you can buy passes for your travelling companions as separate transactions. They will also appear as passes in your account.
You have up to 6 months to make your first trip after you buy the pass, then one month to use the remaining trips after that first trip.
You can make reservations to go with a Spain pass either at stations as you go or at www.renfe.com , but the online method isn't obvious. Here's how to make Renfe Pass seat reservations using www.renfe.com ( feedback appreciated ):
1. After buying your Renfe pass, go to www.renfe.com and switch it to English by clicking the globe logo at top right and select Ingles .
2. Log into your account and select the tab called My passes. You should see each Renfe pass you have bought for you and your companions.
3. At the top of that page is a from and to field, like the journey planner used to book tickets on their home page. Use this to make reservations, the price will be shown as €0.
You can only make reservations for one person/pass at a time. But if you click Choose seats you can select your seat from a seat map and can use this feature to select seats next to each other.
Important: When you make your first reservation, Renfe assumes that this is the first train you want to take with your pass and automatically starts the one-month pass validity from that date. This now prevents you from making reservations on an earlier date. So make sure that the first reservation you make is for the day you intend to start using the pass!
What are Spanish trains like?
AVE or Alta Velocidad Española trains are Renfe's front-rank high-speed services. Reservation is compulsory, there are standard and comfort class seats, a cafe-bar, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.
If you pay the Premium fare, an airline-style hot tray meal with wine is included although on some departures you get a snack box instead, see the food & drink section above . AVE trains come in various types.
AVE trains come in various types, see the AVE page for more information, photo & tips .
A type S103 AVE at Madrid Atocha . More about AVE trains .
Euromed trains
Euromed trains operate the fast services on the Barcelona-Valencia-Alicante corridor, with Intercity trains operating the slower services. Euromed trains have standard & comfort class, a cafe-bar, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi. They run at up to 250 km/h on a short stretch of high-speed line near Barcelona, but mostly at up to 200 km/m on upgraded classic tracks. Euromed services use the same S130 Talgo trains used for most Alvia services, but with AVE levels of service: If you pay the Premium fare you get a comfort class seat with Sala Club access and meals included.
Euromed train at Barcelona Sants. These S130 trains are known as Patito (little duck) by staff. No prizes for guessing why...
Alvia trains
Alvia trains are the next rank down from AVE & Euromed trains, with standard & comfort class and cafe-bar. S130 & S730 trains have power sockets at seats, as do some but not all S120s. Alvia trains come in 3 types:
S130 trains operate the Alvia services linking Madrid with Cadiz, Huelva, Gijon & Santander. They consist of little articulated coaches built by the Talgo company sandwiched between two duck-billed power cars. Their unique Talgo design involves just one pair of wheels under each articulation.
S730 trains operate Alvia services from Madrid to Ourense, Vigo, Santiago de Compostela & A Coruña. Virtually identical to S130 but with a diesel power car at each end in addition to the regular electric power car, so they can reach the non-electrified extremities of the network.
S120 trains operate Alvia services linking Barcelona with Bilbao, Pamplona & San Sebastian and Madrid with San Sebastian. These trains are built by CAF.
S130 Alvia train at Santander. The S130 Alvia trains are built by the Talgo company, for obvious reasons Renfe staff call them Patito , little duck.

The cafe-bar and standard (2nd) class seats on an Alvia train.
Intercity trains
These run on many long distance routes, including Madrid-Ronda-Algeciras, Madrid-San Sebastian. Most are former Altaria trains, little articulated trains built by the Talgo company and hauled by a locomotive, they have adjustable wheels so they can run at up to 200 km/h on the standard-gauge high-speed AVE lines then run slowly though a gauge-changing shed to emerge on traditional Iberian broad gauge to complete their journey on the classic network. A few Intercity trains have been created by rebranding former S120 Alvia trains built by CAF, for example on the Madrid-San Sebastian route, which also have gauge-changing wheels. All Intercity trains have a cafe-bar, but you're unlikely to find WiFi or power sockets.
A Cartagena-Alicante-Valencia-Barcelona Intercity train at Valencia Estación del Nord.
Avant is Renfe's brand name for 'short hop' high-speed trains, one class of seating only. There are two broad types of Avant service: (1) Separate trains of varying types, such as the one shown below from Valladolid to Madrid and (2), a designated standard class coach on a longer-distance AVE train, which is why you see two trains leaving at the same time on routes such as Barcelona-Girona, one an AVE with 2 classes and higher prices, the other an Avant with a cheaper fixed price. They are of course the same train, the Avant is one car on the AVE designated for passengers making shorter journeys.
Avlo, Iryo, Ouigo...
Spain's high-speed lines have been opened up to competition. Renfe now has a lo-cost brand called Avlo , and competitor operators Iryo & Ouigo now operate on key routes including Barcelona-Madrid , Madrid-Valencia, Madrid-Cordoba/Seville/Malaga. See the Barcelona-Madrid page for a run down of these 3 operators .
How to buy train tickets for Spain
When does booking open? Anything between 15 days and 11 months, Renfe is a law unto itself when it comes to booking horizons, see the introduction .
What can these sites sell? They can sell Renfe's mainline trains and sometimes competing high-speed trains run by Avlo, Iryo or Ouigo. They can't sell tickets for Renfe's suburban (cercanias) routes including Latour de Carol-Barcelona or Cerbère-Portbou-Barcelona, nor can they sell tickets for Euskotren (Hendaye-San Sebastian-Bilbao) or the former FEVE routes (Bilbao-Santander-Gijon-Ferrol).
Option 1, buy at Raileurope.com
The quickest & easiest way to buy Spanish train tickets is at Raileurope.com with cheap advance-purchase fares & print-at-home or collect-at-station tickets. You can choose to pay in €, £ or $. There's a small booking fee.
Raileurope.com links directly to Renfe's (Spanish Railways) ticketing system and charges the same price as Renfe themselves with the same print-your-own ticket delivery. Unlike Renfe's own site it's in plain English without any of Renfe.com's quirky translations and no credit card rejection problems.
Raileurope.com can book the lo-cost Barcelona-Madrid Ouigo Spain trains as well as the normal Renfe trains, but cannot book lo-cost Avlo trains
Anyone from any country can use Raileurope.com as international credit cards are welcomed. It can also sell international trains between Spain and Portugal or France, as it links to the French, German, Italian & British ticketing systems. Who are Raileurope.com?
Important: If you have a baby or infant, remember to add them as a child and enter their age, they'll still go free but will get the free infant ticket which is now necessary in Spain.
Option 2, buy at Thetrainline.com or Omio.com
www.omio.com & www.thetrainline.com also connect to Renfe's ticketing system to sell Renfe tickets at exactly the same prices as Renfe with the same print-your-own or collect-at-station tickets, very easily, all overseas credit cards accepted. Both charge a small booking fee. They can also book Ouigo Spain trains & Avlo trains . Who are Thetrainline.com?
Option 3, buy at Petrabax.com , easy to use, in US$
If you'd rather pay in USD, use www.petrabax.com . This is a US-based agency which also links directly to the Renfe ticketing system to sell the same trains as Renfe.com with the same print-at-home tickets. They add a small mark-up, but it's easy to use in plain English and it avoids the English translation and credit card acceptance problems people can experience with Renfe.com. Anyone from any country can use Petrabax, including the United States, Canada, Australia, India & Singapore.
Option 4, buy at Renfe.com
How to use www.renfe.com, before you start, step 1, use the journey planner, step 2, select a train, step 3, select fare & class.
Basico and Elige fares both get you a Estandar (2nd) class seat.
Elige Confort and Premium fares both get you a Confort (1st) class seat.
Basico is non-changeable, non-refundable. Elige fares are semi-flexible, semi-refundable. The Premium fare is fully changeable, fully refundable and includes Sala Club lounge access and a meal served at your seat. You'll only see a Premium fare on AVE & EuroMed trains.
Step 4, passenger details
Step 5, customise trip, step 6, pay & print tickets.
Print your tickets or download the Renfe app
After you've paid, a confirmation screen appears, with a link to download tickets and save them to your PC. Or you can download the Renfe app onto your phone, sign into your account and your tickets will appear. You can now board the train.

Travel insurance & other tips
Always take out travel insurance.
You should take out travel insurance with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover from a reliable insurer. It should cover trip cancellation and loss of cash & belongings up to a reasonable limit. These days, check you're covered for covid-19-related issues, and use an insurer whose cover isn't invalidated by well-meant but excessive Foreign Office travel advice against non-essential travel. An annual policy is usually cheapest even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself. Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connection, see the advice on missed connections here . Here are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.
Get an eSIM with mobile data package
Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a European mobile data package and stay connected. Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list . There's no need to buy a physical SIM card! Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .
Get a Curve card for foreign travel
Most banks give you a poor exchange rate then add a foreign transaction fee on top. A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month as I write this. The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards. And you can get a Curve card for free.
How it works: 1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android . 2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses. 3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card. 4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app. You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.
I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader. The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than getting a card out). I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great. See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.
Get a VPN for safe browsing. Why you need a VPN
When travelling you may use free public WiFi which is often insecure. A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi. It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply. See VPNs & why you need one explained . ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using this link you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription. I also get some commission to help support this site.
Carry an Anker powerbank
Tickets, reservations, hotel bookings and Interrail or Eurail passes are often now held on your mobile phone. You daren't let it run out of power, and you can't always rely on the phone's internal battery or on being near a power outlet. I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over. Buy from Amazon.co.uk or Buy from Amazon.com .
Touring cities? Use hill walking shoes!
One of the best things I've done is swap my normal shoes for hill-walking shoes, in my case from Scarpa. They're intended for hiking across the Pennines not wandering around Florence, but the support and cushioning for hiking works equally well when you're on your feet all day exploring foreign cities. My feet used to give out first and limit my day, now the rest of me gives up before they do!

The Route 66 Train is a new way to get your kicks on Route 66, and it involves a short ride on the Amtrak that’s jam-packed with a fascinating history and incredibly scenic views. Traveling from Kingman to Winslow (or vice versa), this 200-mile train ride passes through some of the most iconic destinations in Arizona – and it’s very affordable, too! Route 66 train.
Wow! The Route 66 Train sounds amazing! I'm going to check it out as soon as I can. What other trains can I take in Arizona? That seems like a great way to see the state with ease.
It certainly is. Arizona has a rich history of rail travel. As a result, you can enjoy train rides in many parts of the state - Amtrak is only the beginning! The Grand Canyon Railway is one of the most popular train rides in the state. It's a two-hour journey from Williams to the Grand Canyon itself. It's historic, too - this railroad first started running in 1901!
That's not all, though, there are lots of scenic railroads in Arizona that you and your family will love. There's one in Clarkdale, one in Anthem, one in Tucson, and numerous others, too.
Route 66 is a big part of American history. Do you have any suggestions of how I can best experience it, other than on the Amtrak Route 66 line?
Certainly! Route 66 is very long, but the part of it that's in Arizona is one of the most popular for visitors. Why? Because in many places, it still looks a lot like it did long ago. Perhaps the best way to experience it is on a road trip of your own. You can stop in various cities and towns along the way. There are lots of bizarre attractions in Arizona for you to check out along the way, too - you'll never be bored while you get your kicks on Route 66!
What about food along the way?
There are a number of iconic restaurants along Route 66 that have been in business for decades. You'll love the food and unique atmosphere at these places where travelers have been dining for many years.

Travel America In Style With These 22 Incredible Train Journeys
Posted: May 28, 2024 | Last updated: May 28, 2024
Exploring America's railroads
The US is prime road-trip country but, to get the best views and the most relaxing experience, you really can't beat a trip on one of America's railroads.
Read on as we round up our favorite journeys from across the land, taking in everything from epic cross-country escapes to short-run heritage routes in beautiful natural surroundings.
Rocky Mountaineer: Rockies to the Red Rocks
A new Rocky Mountaineer route takes passengers on an exciting two-day journey between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah, with an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The Rockies to the Red Rocks was launched in August 2021 and all packages include meals onboard as well as accommodation in Moab, Glenwood Springs and Denver.
California Zephyr: Chicago, Illinois to San Francisco, California
Whichever way you travel – Chicago to San Francisco or vice-versa – the 2,438-mile (3,924km), 51-hour cross-country journey on the California Zephyr is a breathtaking experience. From the impossibly majestic mountain ranges of the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada to the vast expanse of the Utah desert, the route offers stunning scenery from start to finish.
There's a variety of accommodation on the train, from coach class seats to superliner bedroom suites, and travelers in private rooms have access to flexible dining that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and a wide selection of drinks. A ride in the observation car, called Sightseer Lounge, is an unmissable experience, especially when passing through the rocky Colorado scenery.
Pacific Surfliner: San Diego to San Luis Obispo, California
The Pacific Surfliner skirts 350 miles along California’s Pacific Coast between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. Skimming the gleaming coastline and the Pacific Coast Highway, the Surfliner passes the narrow Simi Valley towards the Santa Susana Mountains and the Simi Hills. Leaving Los Angeles, the train then runs parallel with the Old Pacific Highway before re-joining the Californian waves and various coastal towns and nudging into San Diego.
The full journey takes just over eight hours. Normally, the route offers 13 daily round-trip services between San Diego and Los Angeles, five to Santa Barbara and two to San Luis Obispo, so travelers can be flexible with their itinerary. Schedules have recently changed and the service is also impacted by track closures so do check for updates before booking.
Cape Cod Central Railroad: Hyannis to Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts
A heritage railway dating back to the mid-1800s, the Cape Cod Central Railroad offers scenic excursions, swanky dining journeys and special events from May to October. The standard circular two-hour trip starts from Hyannis, known as the Capital of the Cape. It winds its way through the quaint villages of West Barnstable and Sandwich (the oldest on the Cape), along the Cape Cod Canal and across the landmark Buzzards Bay vertical lift bridge.
On the way, travelers see sand dunes, salt marshes and cranberry bogs and hear fascinating commentary about Cape Cod Canal and other points of interest. Tickets are available on the company's website.
Cardinal: New York City, New York to Chicago, Illinois
Cardinal, Amtrak’s thrice-weekly service, takes travelers overnight from New York City to Chicago, calling in at Washington DC, Charlottesville, Cincinnati and Indianapolis. Three other routes connect these busy cities, but the Cardinal is easily the most scenic of them all. The views get especially arresting across the Shenandoah Valley, over the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny range, before winding through West Virginia’s gorgeous New River Gorge.
Heading westward, the train rolls along the banks of the Ohio River to the skyline of Cincinnati. From there, the journey continues via Indianapolis, before wending its way up to Chicago in time for breakfast. There's a wide range of accommodation and dining options available – check the Amtrak website for current information on service times and amenities offered.
Grand Canyon Railway: Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona
The trip on the Grand Canyon Railway begins in Williams, a small town 30 miles west of Flagstaff. Meandering its way through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, the train terminates in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park, before heading back to Williams. The train departs at 9.30am daily.
Those who pick the Dome car will have access to a private bar service with incredible views on the side. Opt for the luxury Parlor and you'll be able to step out onto the open-air rear platform and see the changing landscape from a different perspective. Passengers can keep their eyes peeled for wildlife including elk, mountain lions, mule deer, bald eagles and horned owls too.
Strasburg Rail Road, Pennsylvania
America’s oldest operating railroad, the Strasburg Rail Road first puffed off the buffers in 1832. Today it takes its passengers on a whistle-stop tour through Pennsylvanian Amish country. Touring the farmlands of Lancaster County, tended by the Amish, the regular excursion is a short but sweet 4.5 mile journey each way.
Four steam locomotives still pull original rolling stock on the 45-minute round trip to and from Paradise, and an audio commentary dispenses nuggets of knowledge on the nation’s oldest continuously operating short line railway. There are typically numerous special outings, such as the Wine & Cheese ride, themed dinner trains and unique friends and family experiences, like escape rooms, trivia nights and even a cabaret. Keen trainspotters can also look out for the Amtrak trains racing past on a parallel line.
Southwest Chief: Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California
The Southwest Chief train beats a 40-hour-journey through the American West, escorting travelers from the shore of Lake Michigan to the Pacific Ocean. It passes through eight states and calls in at Kansas City, Albuquerque and Flagstaff along the way. The epic journey is often billed as Amtrak's most scenic and crosses the Mississippi, sweeping past wheat fields, pueblos, peaks and deserts.
The train, departing three times a week, carves its way through canyon passages so narrow you could almost touch the walls as you pass. The Chief also follows the weathered wagon path of the old Santa Fe Trail – an experience impossible to recreate on the road. Passengers might have to hustle for a spot in the Observation Car to soak up the best views, but it's well worth it.
Coast Starlight: Los Angeles, California to Seattle, Washington
The Coast Starlight is a wonderful 35-hour journey, linking some of the West Coast’s finest cities, including Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland and Seattle. Soon after leaving LA’s sprawl behind, the Starlight treats travelers to some of the most glittering Californian views on the Pacific Coast. After that, there’s the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Range and Mount Shasta, lush forests and fertile valleys to enjoy.
The train departs daily (check the Amtrak site for details) and is grouped among the most spectacular train routes in America. As with all long-distance Amtrak trains, there's a wide range of accommodation available, as well as the Sightseer Lounge to soak in those sparkling views of the Pacific shoreline.
Tennessee Valley Railroad, Tennessee
The Tennessee Valley Railroad is a rolling museum of vintage trains, offering a variety of trips that show what traveling was like during the Golden Age of Rail. Excursions include a 50-mile half-day round trip to the Hiwassee Loop from Etowah, as well as a six-hour tour of the historic Civil War town Chickamauga, Georgia, via the former Central of Georgia Railroad.
The Copperhill Special ride heads south, winding up in the twin towns of Copperhill, Tennessee and McCaysville, Georgia by lunchtime, before returning in the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Summerville Steam Special follows a historic nine-hour route from Grand Junction depot in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Summerville, Georgia and back. Trains run on select dates from April to November.
Cass Scenic Railroad, West Virginia
The Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is a charming lumber heritage railroad in the mountains of West Virginia's Pocahontas County. The 11-mile each way route takes in gorgeous country views and the historic company town of Cass. Steam locomotives whisk passengers to the summit of Bald Knob, the highest point on Back Allegheny Mountain, on a 4.5-hour round trip. Passengers ride on open-sided log cars and a traditional "King of the Road hobo lunch" (meat and potatoes cooked in foil) is served on board after passing Old Spruce junction.
There's a 30-minute layover at Bald Knob, 4,842 feet (1,476m) above sea level. One of West Virginia's highest mountains, it's the perfect spot to enjoy fine views across two states. Back in Cass, a company town founded in 1901 by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, passengers can soak up the atmosphere and imagine it in its logging heyday.
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Colorado
The coal-fired locomotives are originals from the 1880s and the route follows in the tracks of countless miners, cowboys and gunslingers from the Old West. There are four classes to choose from during the summer season from May through to October. Check the company's website for the latest information.
Adirondack: New York City, New York to Montréal, Canada
The train leaves daily from NYC's Penn Station and the morning departure is perfect for taking in the views as you head north – fall is the best time to travel to witness the colorful trees lining the tracks in all their splendor. Check the Amtrak site for the latest updates.
Mount Washington Cog Railway, New Hampshire
The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the first of its kind in the world, runs scenic rides to the summit of Mount Washington. Located in stunning Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in the heart of the White Mountains, this National Historic Engineering Landmark is certainly a fun way to discover rural New England. Passengers ride in brightly colored vintage cars from 1869 and three-hour round trips depart daily from May to October.
Thick forest gives way to rough terrain as the train chugs along the roughly 3.5-mile track, at a 37% gradient at certain points. At the summit, travelers have an hour to walk around the Sherman Adams Visitor Center and visit its Cog Railway Museum. Weather permitting, the 360-degree views embrace five states, Canada and the Atlantic.
Crescent: New York City, New York to New Orleans, Louisiana
Amtrak’s Crescent train ties together two great and vastly different cities: New York and New Orleans. The 30-hour journey kicks off from New York City’s Penn Station, rattling its way down through some of the most populous cities of the northeast corridor in an afternoon, including Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC. On the second day the views get more scenic: travelers pass through forests of dogwood trees into the Deep South via Atlanta and Birmingham, Alabama before arriving in the Big Easy in the late evening.
Departing three times a week, the journey is at its best in summer, when passengers in the Lounge Car are normally joined by guides from the National Park Service, who are able to share plenty of interesting facts about the points of interest along the way. Check the Amtrak website for the latest updates.
Redwood Forest Steam Train, California
California’s Roaring Camp Railroads offers two contrasting heritage services, both of which are great fun. Their Redwood Forest Steam Train experience offers the chance to ride on a narrow-gauge steam train over trestle bridges and through towering redwoods. The train is pulled by one of the original 1890s narrow-gauge steam locomotives that were used to haul the giant redwood logs out of the mountains, and are among the oldest and most authentically preserved in America.
The train travels from Felton in the Santa Cruz Mountains to the summit of Bear Mountain for 75 breathtaking minutes. Conveniently, conductors are on hand to narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest. Adults can typically book an Engineer For The Day experience and ride in the cab to assist in the locomotive's running, while little ones will love a day out with Thomas the Tank Engine.
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, North Carolina
All the GSMR's excursions leave from Bryson City and there's a choice between steam or diesel locomotive journeys. As well as the standard scenic excursions, there are also special events for kids such as PEANUTS Easter Beagle Express and PEANUTS The Great Pumpkin Patch Express. The summer season runs between March and November, while the steam train journeys run from June to December – check the GSMR website for the latest information.
White Pass & Yukon Route, Alaska
The snow-dusted mountains, pink and yellow wildflowers and rambling hills along the White Pass and Yukon Route appear almost Alpine – but they're actually a snapshot of Alaska's wilderness. The railroad has its roots in the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century, when it was constructed to help gold prospectors get out of Skagway and into Canada. Today, the 110-mile stretch can be traveled in vintage cars via two excursions. On the journey, passengers take in a panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges and waterfalls.
The two-and-a-half-hour Summit Excursion retraces the original route to the White Pass Summit, 3,000 feet above sea level. It's scheduled to run between April and October and tickets are already available to book. The eight-hour Bennett Scenic Journey between Skagway, Alaska, and Carcross, Yukon in Canada travels along the same route taken by gold prospectors.
Empire Builder: Chicago, Illinois to Portland or Seattle, Washington
The Empire Builder is yet another of Amtrak’s epic cross-country routes covering vast swathes of the USA and incredibly varied terrain. There’s a historic dimension to the journey too, since the train follows portions of the Lewis and Clark Trail. Departing from Chicago, travelers glide past the Mississippi River before hitting the illuminated night skyline of Minneapolis and St Paul.
The 46-hour journey takes travelers through the North Dakota plains and through Glacier National Park towards Spokane on day three. From there the route forks: there's a Portland option, heading down through the Columbia River Gorge past sublime views of Mount Hood and Beacon Rock, or a journey to Seattle via Leavenworth, dubbed The Bavarian Village. Trains depart daily – visit the Amtrak website for the latest information.
Denali Star: Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska
Passengers can typically pair their train journeys with day trips in Talkeetna, an excursion in Denali National Park, or even plan a multi-day itinerary with overnight stays along the way. In addition to the standard stops, the train will provide a flagstop service between Talkeetna and Hurricane. The trains depart daily between May to September.
Napa Valley Wine Train, California
It isn’t just about the wine, though. There’s a lot of history packed into these century-old railcars, which trundle elegantly along a route stretching back more than 150 years. The carriages, with opulent velvet-upholstered seats, mahogany paneling and brass, have been sensitively restored to evoke the glamor of vintage train travel.
Sky Railway, New Mexico
Sky Railway in New Mexico is a heritage line that's recently gotten a new lease of life, with new routes debuted in December 2021. The 141-year-old Santa Fe Railway was saved by a group of enthusiasts ( Game of Thrones author George RR Martin among them) in 2020 and now the historic rail line has been turned into a fantasy-filled adventure ride.

- Tickets and passes
Travel pass for older people
Free travel for older people.
If you qualify for a state pension, you could be eligible for free travel across the country as part of the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme.
Do you qualify?
To get a travel pass for older people you must:
- live in Greater Manchester, (if you live outside Greater Manchester, apply for a pass in your own area but you cannot add tram and train travel within Greater Manchester to passes issued by other areas); and
- qualify for a state pension. It doesn't matter if you are taking your pension or still working.
The age you qualify for a state pension isn't the same for everyone. You may need to be up to 66 to qualify depending on when you were born. If you're not sure, check your state pension age .
Costs and benefits
The pass is free, and lasts for five years.
Within Greater Manchester:
- Travel for free on all buses within Greater Manchester between 9.30am and midnight, Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and on public holidays.
- You can also choose to pay £10 to add tram and train to your pass, for a year’s unlimited off-peak travel on Metrolink and trains within Greater Manchester. You can then travel on Metrolink trams and in trains after 9.30am on Monday to Friday, and all day on weekends and public holidays.
- If you travel outside of these times you must pay the full adult fare.
Throughout England:
- Travel for free on all local buses between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and on public holidays.
How to use the pass
You must always remember to:
- touch in at the card reader when boarding buses
- touch in and touch out at a yellow smart reader on tram stops, for Metrolink
- touch in and out at train station ticket barriers, where they are in place
Please show your card, when asked, to any Transport for Greater Manchester or transport operator official during your journey.
Smart readers on tram stops now accept contactless cards and devices for travel. Please move your concessionary pass away from your payment cards when you use a smart reader.
For example, if you keep your pass in a wallet or purse, remove it before you touch-in and touch-out. This will make sure you’re not charged on a contactless card you didn’t intend to use.
Apply by post
Download an application form or get one from an Information and Ticket Office.
If you are eligible complete the relevant form and attach:
- A passport sized colour photograph of yourself
- Proof of age – a copy of either your birth certificate, medical card, passport or driving licence
- Proof of your address – a copy of either a utility bill, local council tax bill or a Department for Work and Pensions letter from within the last 12 months
You can take your form and proof to an Information and Ticket office (Travelshop) who can check it.
You can also post your documents to the address on the application form.
Your pass will be sent to you in the post within 10 working days.
Please do not send original documents .
Renew your pass
At least two weeks before your travel pass expires, we will send you a new pass, provided it has been in use.
If you use your card often then we will send you a new one two weeks before your travel pass runs out.
If you have not used your pass in the last 12 months, you will not be issued a new card and will need to contact us to request a new card after it’s expired. If you need a pass, please call our Concessionary Travel team on 0161 244 1000.
Please note: when using your pass, you must touch-in on buses and use the validators to touch-in and out on Metrolink or when using the trains.
If you don’t then your card will show as inactive.
Updating your address
You need to let us know if you change your address. There may be a £10 charge if a card is sent to an old address.
If you feel your appearance has changed since your last renewal, please send us a new photo. This can be done via post or can also be emailed to us.
If you no longer need your pass or have any other questions please call our Concessionary Travel team on 0161 244 1000.
If you need a replacement pass
It costs £10 to replace a lost, damaged or stolen pass.
To order a replacement pass you can:
- Call us on 0161 244 1000 to make a card payment (7am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm at weekends).
- Visit an Information and Ticket office (Travelshop) to order and pay for a replacement pass.

Tourists over 66 get free travel in Ireland
OLDER TOURISTS will enjoy free rail travel around the State following the introduction of a new scheme yesterday.
All overseas visitors aged 66 or over, from anywhere in the world, will be able to benefit from unlimited travel on mainline, Dart and commuter trains in the scheme, developed by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Iarnród Éireann.
The scheme was announced by the Government as part of the budget in December, in a bid to increase overseas visitor numbers.
It is similar to the free travel scheme for Irish people aged 66 and over, but does not include free bus or Luas travel.
It also differs from the scheme for Irish residents when it comes to cross-Border travel. Irish senior citizens travelling from Dublin to Belfast are entitled to free rail travel for the entire journey, but overseas visitors will only be entitled to free travel for the portion of their journey in this State. They will have to purchase a ticket for the remainder of their trip, from Dundalk onwards.
The scheme is initially for a one-year period, but will be subject to review and is expected to continue indefinitely if the demand is there.Tourists can access the scheme by visiting the Fáilte Ireland website, www.discoverireland.com, to arrange for a “Golden Trekker” reservation. They will be asked for details such as their date of birth and passport or national identity card number. Their Golden Trekker reservation can then be used to book their free Golden Trekker tickets when they arrive.
Tickets can be purchased in blocks of four days, depending on the length of stay. A four-day unlimited ticket is normally worth €100.
Visitors who do not pre-book the reservation can also avail of the scheme when they arrive by calling to a Fáilte Ireland tourist information office.
Fáilte Ireland’s Redmond O’Donoghue said the initiative was a very encouraging and constructive development.
“It will help strengthen the appeal of Ireland among some visitors, and Fáilte Ireland believes it will pay dividends to Irish tourism longer term.”
Iarnród Éireann chief executive Dick Fearn said the scheme would give Irish tourism a boost in a difficult time.
“As well as providing tourists with rail travel facilities, they will also benefit from the unique perspective our network gives of the beautiful Irish countryside.”
The Times of India has already highlighted the scheme, following Taoiseach Brian Cowen's remarks on it earlier this month.

Norfolk Southern will pay $15 million fine as part of federal settlement over Ohio derailment
FILE - Debris from a Norfolk Southern freight train lies scattered and burning along the tracks on Feb. 4, 2023, the day after it derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. A federal judge has signed off Tuesday, May 21, 2024, on the $600 million class action settlement over last year’s disastrous Norfolk Southern derailment in eastern Ohio, but many people who live near East Palestine are still wondering how much they will end up with out of the deal. The federal government agreed to a $15 million fine for Norfolk Southern over last year’s disastrous derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, and the railroad promised to pay more than $500 million to complete the efforts to improve safety that it announced after the crash and address community health concerns.
Residents who had to evacuate their homes after the derailment were generally underwhelmed by the deal the Environmental Protection Agency and Justice Department announced Thursday that doesn’t include any criminal charges. This federal settlement comes two days after a federal judge signed off on the railroad’s $600 million class action settlement with residents whose lives were disrupted.
In addition to the civil penalty, Norfolk Southern agreed to pay $235 million in past and future cleanup costs — on top of what they’ve already paid for cleanup — and set up a $25 million health care fund to pay for 20 years of medical exams in the community. The railroad will also pay about $30 million for long-term monitoring of drinking water, groundwater and surface water in the area. The agreement also says the railroad will pay $244 million for previously promised railroad improvements through 2025.
Many East Palestine residents feel this settlement doesn’t do nearly enough to a company that just reported a $527 million profit in the fourth quarter of last year and $53 million in the first quarter after the derailment costs. The railroad’s CEO received $13.4 million in total compensation last year.
“Honestly, no amount can ever make this right, but it should be at least enough to hurt them a little bit. I’m sure that’s not going to hurt their bottom line at all,” Jami Wallace said.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the fine is the largest allowed under the Clean Water Act, and the railroad agreed to continue paying all of the cleanup costs. Plus he said Norfolk Southern committed to meaningful safety improvements
“This settlement is historic in many ways and will begin to make up for some of the damage caused to the residents of East Palestine. And it would absolutely push the industry in the direction that we would like for the industry to go,” Regan said. “Again, if some of these provisions that we’ve secured and locked in had been in place, we may not even be where we are today. ”
But the railroad won’t face criminal charges, and this latest settlement won’t add anything to Norfolk Southern’s roughly $1.7 billion in total costs related to the derailment because the Atlanta-based company was already anticipating those costs.
Neither this federal settlement nor the class action settlement seem like enough to Krissy Ferguson.
“Slaps on the wrist. A $15 million fine? And I can never go back to my home again?” Ferguson said.
But resident Misti Allison said it is encouraging to see the investigations and lawsuits against the railroad start to wrap up, and the cleanup is expected to be done sometime later this year.
“I think this is a great step, but let’s continue to make sure the community is made whole,” Allison said.
Many in the small town near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border are eager to put the derailment behind them, but fears about the possibility of developing cancer down the road hang over residents. Allison said she wants to make sure health needs are addressed. But this federal settlement primarily includes only money for exams while the class action settlement includes money for health problems that developed over the past year. Neither deal addresses potential long-term health problems that might develop.
The safety improvements Norfolk Southern promised include adding about 200 more trackside detectors to spot overheating bearings. It has also promised to invest in more than a dozen advanced inspection portals that use an array of cameras to take hundreds of pictures of every passing railcar.
A bill in Congress that would require Norfolk Southern and the rest of the major freight railroads to make more significant changes has stalled , although the industry has promised to make improvements on its own.
Norfolk Southern officials said they believe the relatively small size of this settlement reflects how much the railroad has already done, including paying $780 million in cleanup costs and providing $107 million in aid to residents and the communities affected.
“We are pleased we were able to reach a timely resolution of these investigations that recognizes our comprehensive response to the community’s needs and our mission to be the gold standard of safety in the rail industry,” CEO Alan Shaw said. “We will continue keeping our promises and are invested in the community’s future for the long haul.”
After Thursday’s announcement, the only remaining federal investigation is the National Transportation Safety Board’s probe into the cause of the Feb. 3, 2023, derailment. That agency plans to announce its conclusions at a hearing in East Palestine on June 25 . Republicans in Congress have said they might be willing to look at rail safety reforms after that report.
Ferguson said it feels like Norfolk Southern is rushing to resolve things before the NTSB report comes out. U.S. Sen. JD Vance and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said in a joint statement that they think the government should have waited to settle.
“The residents of East Palestine deserve full compensation to account for the hardships they have faced in the months since the derailment, but they also deserve the full truth about why the derailment and vent and burn occurred,” the statement said. “With its decision to reach a settlement now, the DOJ may have sacrificed its opportunity to use the NTSB’s findings to impose maximum leverage on those responsible for any potential wrongdoing.”
The NTSB has said previously that the derailment was likely caused by an overheating bearing that wasn’t caught in time by the trackside detectors the railroad relies on to spot mechanical problems. The head of the NTSB also said that the five tank cars filled with vinyl chloride didn’t need to be blown open to prevent an explosion because they were actually starting to cool off even though the fire continued to burn around them.
The railroad is still working to resolve a lawsuit Ohio filed against it after the derailment.
Driver pleads guilty to crashing into Cleveland apartment building, seriously injuring sleeping child
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The driver who crashed his pick-up truck into a Cleveland apartment building, seriously injuring a seven-year-old boy, pleaded guilty in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Tuesday.
