Peru is a megadiverse country, offering countless adventures and cultural experiences for the intrepid – as well as potentially endless head-scratching and headache-inducing occurrences for the uninformed traveler.

Whether you plan to stay put in the capital or venture on a circuit through each geographical region , it’s always advantageous to have local insight. Here are some of the top things to know before traveling to Peru .

People walking outside of the glass-fronted international terminal at the Lima airport in Peru

1. Peru’s only international airport is in Lima

Until the Chinchero Airport (a 45-minute drive from Cuzco ) is finished, all international air passengers to Peru will first touch land in the metropolitan area of Lima , via the Jorge Chávez International Airport.

From the airport to San Isidro, Miraflores or Barranco – neighboring districts of Lima that make up the capital’s tourist-friendly trifecta – it's usually a 40-minute taxi ride outside of rush hour.

Don’t try to pick up a taxi outside of arrivals nor from the chaotic street just beyond the airport limit; instead, choose from any of the authorized companies represented just after customs. For travelers on a budget , the safest option is the Airport Express Lima bus (with transfers to and from Miraflores only).

2. The shoulder months are the best time to visit Cuzco

The Cuzco region has two marked seasons: the rainy season (November to April) and the dry (May to October). When the rain is in full effect, areas like the idyllic Sacred Valley turn lush with native crops and tourism is comparatively low.

That said, the wet climate makes the period between January and March especially difficult (and even dangerous, in some cases) for epic hikes.

The dry months are ideal for trekking and most adventure sports – though as a direct correlation, tourism is at its highest then. The best time to visit Cuzco? Aim for the shoulder months , just before the rain (October) or at its tail end (May).

3. Book well in advance for Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and the Inca Trail

Is it possible to snag last-minute entry tickets to Machu Picchu ? Sure, it can happen – but as Peru’s most popular tourist attraction, it doesn't make sense to risk it.

Purchase your entry ticket at least one month in advance, especially if planning to visit the Unesco World Heritage Site between June and August (the busiest months for international visitors).

While you're at it, consider adding on the entry to Huayna Picchu, the tall peak that appears behind the citadel in classic Machu Picchu photos. Only 200 visitors a day are able to make the steep, hour-long ascent that leads to a privileged bird’s eye view of the archaeological site.

Cuzco's dry months are also the high season for one of Peru’s most epic hikes , the Inca Trail. This trek requires a permit that can only be purchased through an organized tour. Keep in mind the trail closes every February for maintenance.

4. In Peru, just one cheek kiss will do to say hello or goodbye

For some travelers, Peru’s salutation may seem too close for comfort, while others – we're looking at you, Italians – will see it as half-finished.

When meeting or greeting someone of the opposite sex or in the case of two women, Peruvians will offer an air kiss on one side of the face. Call it a lingering effect of machismo culture, but men typically greet each other with a simple handshake and hug.

Don't try to enter or leave a party without greeting everyone, be it with a hug or air kiss, as that will appear disrespectful.

5. Keep soles and centimos on hand, especially outside of major tourist zones

Credit card acceptance and even payment applications are commonplace in bustling cities, like Lima and Cuzco, though you will want to keep local currency (sol) on hand at all times.

You can’t miss a visit to open-air markets, such as those in Lima's Surquillo neighborhood  and the San Pedro market in Cuzco, where vendors prefer cash. While at the market, pick up a small coin purse as public transportation and restrooms run on pocket change.

And for towns outside of the typical tourist circuit – think Tumbes in the north or Ayacucho in south-central Peru –  cash on hand is a must.

6. Tipping may not be a local custom, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t

When it comes to dining out in Peru, there is no standard for tipping. That said, Peru’s tipping culture (or lack thereof) should be an exception to the rule of “do as the locals do.” As a visitor, go ahead and leave your waiter, barista or hostess a tip that seems appropriate to you.

7. No, your watch doesn’t need to be reset, it’s just the "hora Peruana"

La hora Peruana (Peruvian time) refers to the stereotype of Peruvians showing up late – not just 15 minutes late but upwards of an hour late.

The phrase is tossed around amongst Peruvians and expats alike, as we’ve all struggled with that landlord, friend or coworker who says they’ll be there in the morning and are a no-show until after lunch.

Of course, la hora Peruana is a generalization, but it’s best to be mentally prepared in case someone you made plans with doesn’t show up on the dot...or anywhere close to it.

8. Keep spare toilet paper in your pocket –  but never flush it!

Public restrooms in Peru are infamous with international travelers. From seatless toilets to humble holes in the ground, we’ve seen it all, but those squeamish moments are nothing you can’t survive.

Follow bathroom etiquette and toss toilet paper in the wastebasket rather than flush it. Public restrooms usually aren’t stocked with toilet paper, so keep a travel-size roll in your day bag, or be prepared to pay 50 cents for a few squares upon entry.

9. Eat and drink with your gut health in mind

Let’s be honest, Peru likely became your destination of choice partly because of the reputation and recognition of its gastronomic scene .

Your senses will be tantalized by the unique kick of ají pepper in a ceviche, the sounds of sizzling suri  (palm-weevil larvae) or the pink froth topping a glass of frutillada  (traditional chicha , or fermented corn beer, blended with strawberries)  –  classic street-food items, depending on which region of Peru you’re visiting.

When it comes to street food – and especially drinks, as Peru does not have clean tap water – there’s always a risk for “travelers’ stomach.” If you have any doubt, play it safe and wait until you get to a recommended restaurant to try that dish you’ve been eyeing.

Female tourist sits in the foreground facing the colorful striated peaks of Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain.

10. Take a full day (if not two) to acclimate before any high-altitude activity

No matter how much physical training you've accomplished at sea level prior to your trip, arriving at high-altitude destinations like Cuzco – 3399m (11,152ft) above sea level – can be brutal.

And what could be worse than dizziness, nausea and other symptoms of soroche (altitude sickness) keeping you from bucket-list hikes, such as Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, 5200m (17,060ft) above sea level?

When planning your trip, include a day or two to acclimate before starting any physically demanding activity. Stay hydrated and avoid heavy food and alcohol. And whether or not you decide to take altitude pills, consider local remedies, such as muña tea and coca leaves.

Day 1 - Welcome to Peru!

Upon arrival at the airport today, you will be met by a local guide and transferred to your hotel. Peru’s capital with over eight million residents, perches on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and has an uninterrupted history of more than 2000 years. Lima, a capital founded by Spanish conquistadors that subsequently exploded with influxes from Asia and then from Peru’s own Andean highlands, is perhaps the most fascinating city on the continent.

The adventure begins tonight. Feel free to explore before your welcome meeting, but make sure you’re back in time to meet the group. After introductions, your tour host will review the details of your tour. After our meeting, we will enjoy a wonderful welcome dinner with our fellow travelers. Accommodations: Iberostar Selection Miraflores – 2 nights (Dinner)

Day 2 - Lima

Today we will learn about the two characters of Lima: the modern one, reflected in the districts of Miraflores and San Isidro; and the historic one, encapsulated in its historic center declared a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. We will immerse ourselves in the colonial history of the city as we walk through its streets and squares, appreciating emblematic buildings such as the Government Palace, the Cathedral, and the Archbishop’s Palace in the Plaza de Armas.

We will have the opportunity to enter one of the most iconic ecclesiastical spaces in Lima, the Convent of Santo Domingo, also declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity and where the relics of three Peruvian saints are found: Santa Rosa de Lima, San Martín de Porres and San Juan Macías. Another essential place to visit is undoubtedly the Casa de Aliaga, which concentrates all the architectural wealth of the viceregal and republican era. The house has been inhabited by 16 generations of the Aliaga family over 480 years. The tour would not be complete without a visit to the Rafael Larco Herrera Museum, one of the most important in the country for exhibiting a valuable collection of almost 45,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic cultures, especially the Mochicas. This museum stands out for being one of the first in the world to have visitable storerooms and providing virtual access to its entire collection. We will marvel at the quality of its pieces of jewelry, textiles and its enigmatic erotic room, dedicated to ceramics alluding to fertility.

Day 3 - Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

You will be assisted at the hotel and transferred to the airport for your onward flight.

Today, we will learn about the tradition and history of the Sacred Valley, the traces left by its ancient inhabitants, and the culture of its current towns. We will stop at 3,200 meters above sea level, at the Taray viewpoint, from where we can obtain a stunning panoramic view of the valley.

We will reach the top of the Apu Inti Huatana hill where we will find the archaeological complex of Pisac, which houses dazzling stone platforms and offers a privileged view of the traditional town that bears the same name. Walking through its buildings, we will see why it is one of the most relevant in the valley, both for its urban planning (very advanced for its time) and for the variety of environments or “neighborhoods” dedicated to religious ceremonies, rooms, and temples. We will also visit Pisac town, characterized by its quiet streets and its market where it proudly lives its millenary heritage represented in its textile art, ceramics, jewelry pieces and other handicrafts. We will enjoy a delicious typical lunch in a local restaurant before continuing to the hotel.

Accommodation: Sonesta Posada Yucay – 2 nights (Breakfast and Lunch)

Day 4 - Sacred Valley

Today is dedicated to exploring three jewels of the Sacred Valley of the Incas: Chincheros, Maras, Moray and Misminay.

You will head to Chinchero to a panoramic view of Chinchero´s Church, which was built by the Spanish in 1607 and remains standing until today. Continue with the visit to the Chinchero ruins, where you will find an important Inca center in which terraces and aqueducts were built.

Then, we will have a majestic view of the ancient Maras salt mines, where the coveted Maras salt – one of the finest in the world – is collected. We will see almost 3,000 pools that in Inca times were an important center for the imperial economy. Today, it continues to be a valuable source of income for hundreds of families. With stunning panoramic views of the mosaic of terraces and ponds, Maras offers the perfect setting for photography enthusiasts. We will also arrive at the Moray archaeological site, which resembles a natural amphitheater. During the Tahuantinsuyo, it functioned as a laboratory and agricultural research center, according to some studies. Its enormous concentric terraces and the variety of microclimates they created allowed the growth of a variety of crops. Then, we will visit the traditional community of Misminay, where we will enjoy a valuable cultural exchange and get to know the traditional Andean lifestyle up close. Its inhabitants will welcome us with their characteristic warmth between music and typical dances, and then invite us to take part in their different daily activities related with planting, harvesting, and textile work.

Accommodation: Sonesta Posada Yucay (Breakfast and Lunch)

At Machu Picchu you can see one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World and take some impressive photos. Lunch is included. Then it is back down to Aguas Calientes for rest.

Day 8 - Peruvian Cooking Experience

This experience will connect us with one of the pillars and greatest pride of Peruvian culture: its gastronomy. The tour will open our eyes to the extensive and rich variety of ingredients that grow in the highlands of Cusco, which are the basis of its traditional cuisine and with which we will learn to prepare delicious dishes.

We will start with a tour of the San Pedro market, the oldest in the city, located in the heart of Cusco. Designed in 1925 by the French architect Gustave Eiffel, today it brings together hundreds of merchants selling fruits, vegetables, traditional breads from the area, as well as businesses that offer breakfasts and other meals. There we can learn about Cusco’s flagship products, such as quinoa, yellow chili and an incredible variety of native potatoes. Then, we will have a cooking class with the best view of the city from a terrace. An experienced chef will teach how to prepare an appetizer, a main dish, and a cocktail with the ingredients that we saw in the market – a full menu with a gourmet touch that we will taste at the end.

Accommodation: Belmond Monasterio (Breakfast and Lunch)

Day 9 - Cusco

We will enjoy a full-day tour to get lost in the history, culture, and nature of the southern sector of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. In Andahuaylillas, behind the modest façade of the San Pedro Apostol church, we will discover a true treasure. The “Sistine Chapel of America” dazzles with its gold plating, fully painted murals, and vaulted ceiling, as well as its organ decorated with angels and cherubs. The vaulted ceiling is extensively painted with flowers and fruits from the area, in an attempt to portray the Andean idiosyncrasy.

Continue with a charming tour of Cusco that offers us history, living culture and art. We will be able to appreciate how Andean and Spanish culture coexist in the Imperial City. From the San Cristóbal viewpoint we will have a panoramic view of the city declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We will arrive at the center to walk the halls of the San Pedro market, the oldest in the city. Designed in 1925 by Gustave Eiffel, today it brings together hundreds of merchants selling local products. We will also visit Koricancha, which during the Inca Empire was a center of worship of the Sun and on which the Santo Domingo convent was later built as part of the evangelization process. Its baroque style façade built on solid Inca walls perfectly summarizes the syncretism of cultures in the city of Cusco. The route will take us uphill through beautiful narrow streets to San Blas, the city’s bohemian neighborhood par excellence, known for being home to local artists’ craft workshops. It’s the perfect place to shop and take something special of this magical city with us! We couldn’t take a tour of the city without visiting the Cathedral, its most important temple, built over Inca Huiracocha’s palace. Its interior houses a wonderful collection of colonial art composed of goldsmith pieces and representative canvases of the Cusco School.

Day 10 - Cusco - Puno

At the scheduled time, you will be transferred to Cusco station to board your Titicaca train to Puno heading south, on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

The once-in-a-lifetime adventure lasts approximately 10 hours 30 minutes. At the start of the journey, you are welcomed at the Wanchaq Station (Cusco), where local musicians will provide background music as you board the train.

Once aboard, you can enjoy the two dining cars decorated in the style of the Pullman cars of the 1920s. The large windows of the Titicaca Train will be perfect for observing every detail of the beautiful landscape in this route. Aboard this train, you will ascend until you reach some very high and cold places, part of the impressive Andes Mountain Range. Then, you will cross beautiful Andean plains, where you can observe vicuñas and alpacas in their natural habitat, grazing on the side of the road. Then you will stop at La Raya, the highest point of the route, to observe the impressive landscape at 4300 meters.

Day 11 - Puno - Amantani & Uros Islands

We pick up passengers from the hotel lobby and transfer them to the port of Puno at the previously agreed time.

Today, you will have your excursion to Amantani Island, located at an elevation of 4150 metres above sea level and famous for its terraced hillsides where its people used to farm. Pre-Incan peoples claimed that this island was a sacred place, and that is why, if you allow it, you can feel its mystical energies flow around you.

Upon arrival, the locals will welcome you, leading you to your homestay accommodations,

where they will show you their day-to-day activities, like weaving, farming, mystical ceremonies, and others. Next on the itinerary is a stopover at the handicraft center and the main square. Then, it’s time for a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, before returning to Puno, you will visit the famous floating Uros Islands made out of reeds, whose inhabitants still live according to the customs of their ancestors.

OPTIONAL IN AMANTANI: You can make the ascent to the ceremonial centers, (medium high level of walking) of approximately one hour here it is necessary to take into account that the highest part is at 4100 meters above sea level. From where you can appreciate the immensity of Lake Titicaca, and feel all the energy of this mystical center, the descent takes approximately 35 minutes. If the walk is made, the start of the excursion or departure from Puno must be no later than 06:30 am, the visit in Uros must be a maximum of 40 minutes, to return to Puno around 17:30. The operation of this activity would also depend on the weather.

Day 12 - Puno - Lima

We leave our hotel and travel to the north of Puno to Lampa, known as the “Pink City” from the color of the local clay. The tour includes a visit to the beautiful colonial-era Church of Santiago, built entirely of stone by the Jesuits between 1675 and 1685. You will also see the catacombs, in which those who died during the construction of the church were interred. Lampa has several town houses dating from the colonial and republican eras. One of the best is the Casona de los Frisancho, 300 years old, in Lampa’s Main Square, in the heart of the city.

Also included is a visit to the brotherhood of the Vicuñas de la Inmaculada, where there is an enormous silver bier built to resemble that which carries the Virgin of Macarena in Spain.

After leaving Lampa, visit the ruins at Sillustani, a famous cemetery on the Andean plateau near Puno, next to the beautiful Lake Umayo. The site contains huge funerary towers called chullpas, which date from 600 to 800 A.D., some of which reach 12 meters high and are 7.50 meters in diameter. On the way, you will also see the Waru-Waru or interconnected canals used in agriculture. You will surely be impressed by the beautiful scenery in this zone.

End the days touring at the airport for the flight to Lima. Transfer to the hotel for overnight.

October is one of the best months to visit Machu Picchu. As it's the transition month between the dry and wet seasons, little rain is expected, and it is away from the cold weather of the winter season. The temperatures in Machu Picchu will vary from highs of around 72°F (22°C) and lows of around 41°F (5°C).

The best golf clubs in moscow: luxury, exclusivity, and entertainment.

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

Stuart Macdonald won the Diners Club Peru Open on Sunday after carding a 1-under 71 in the final round. Macdonald climbs into the No. 3 spot in the Fortinet Cup season-long standings after securing his second career PGA TOUR-sanctioned win at Los Inkas Golf Club.

This is the second time that Macdonald has been victorious in Peru. As an amateur, the Vancouver native won the 29th Lima Golf Club International Amateur Championship in 2017. Macdonald is the first Canadian to win the Diners Club Peru Open since it became a PGA TOUR Sanctioned event in 2012.

Prior to 2024, Macdonald was one of the most consistent performers on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica in 2023. Macdonald did not miss the cut and only finished outside of the top-25 once in eight starts, including a T14 finish at the 2023 Diners Club Peru Open.

Macdonald carried that momentum to PGA TOUR Canada in 2023. In six starts, Macdonald finished with three top-20 finishes and only missed the cut once. Macdonald’s best finish came at the 2023 Commissionaires Ottawa Open, where he defeated Devon Bling and Luke Schniederjans in a playoff to claim his first PGA TOUR-sanctioned win.
