The Pharcyde announce August Australian tour.

To celebrate 20 years of dedicated Pharcyde delivery, and following their successful performances at Good Vibrations Festival in 2009, California’s Imani and Bootie Brown of The Pharcyde are bringing their original, idiosyncratic style of hip hop back to Australia this August with a special audio/visual show.

It’s hard to believe it’s been two decades since Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde was released, though its sense of timeliness is unmistakable. With classics like “Oh Shit,” “Otha Fish”, “Ya’ Mama,” and hit single, “Passing Me By,” it is not surprising that it shipped over a million units, garnered comparisons to De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest, and everyone from Pitchfork Media to The Source has hailed it as one of the greatest albums ever made.

The Pharcyde’s second release LabCabInCalifornia revealed exactly how far-reaching their vision was. From enlisting a young and then unknown J Dilla to produce beats for the classic “Runnin” to collaborating with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop,” it has consistently reinforced their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

Today, The Pharcyde continues to hone their individual abilities yet carry on the name. They still seduce their audience with the same boyish charm that founded them at the beginning, partnered with the knowledge that has been bestowed upon them as men who have taken on, and rose to the challenge of the rap game.

Don’t miss this special audio/visual performance coming to a city near you in August! Note that it doesn’t seem like the full group will be coming down for the tour, which is a pity… but we expect great things all the same.

Formed in 1989, The Pharcyde, from Los Angeles, California is an alt. hip-hop group, best known for “Drop”, “Runnin” and “Passin’ Me By”.

Pharcyde came together in the late 1980s as a group of dancers, and recorded a demo in 1991 that featured the tracks “Passin’ Me By” and “Ya Mama”. They drafted in artist management who had previously worked with Cypress Hill and House of Pain. Fortunately the demo landed in the hands of Mike Ross from Delicious Vinyl, who signed the group to his label in 1991.

The group recorded their debut album “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde” and released it on November 24th 1992; the album earned Gold certification by the RIAA in 1996 in addition to having already earned plenty of critical acclaim. Their single, “Passin’ Me By” peaked at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the song made it to the soundtrack of the movie, Big Daddy. Following the release, of the album, the band managed to make the line up of the Lollapalooza festival in 1994. It was around this time that the band also earned the “Album of the Year” title from Time Magazine.

With one hit record already under their belts, it was time for the release of another one. This time it was “Labcabincalifornia”, which was released on November 14th 1995. They had a video directed by film producer and director, Spike Jonze for the song “Drop” which made it to number 5 on the Hot Rap Singles Chart, whilst the album made it to number 37 on the Billboard 200.

On November 7th 2000, the band released their third full-length studio album entitled “Plain Rap” which unfortunately didn’t chart as high as the previous two albums, but the single “Trust” did make it to number 15 in the US Rap Charts.

Live reviews

This one’s a little bit complicated, so you might have to bear with me; there are effectively two different iterations of The Pharcyde currently touring and playing shows. The first, under the original name, is comprised of Imani and Bootie Brown, and they sporadically play gigs, including a handful of European festivals this summer. The other version of The Pharcyde - and the one I’ll focus on here - involves the other two original members, Fatlip and Slimkid3, who played the group’s seminal Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde record in its entirety at The Roxy in Los Angeles two years ago, and found it to be such a success that they’ve since taken the show on the road. Flanked by the record’s producers, J-Swift and L.A. Jay, and performing in front of a modest video screen, the pair deliver an affectionate tribute to the album that saw them break through into the mainstream, with plentiful crowd interaction and thrillingly energetic renditions of the likes of ‘Oh Shit’ and ‘Passin’ Me By’. Granted, this isn’t officially The Pharcyde, and perhaps it’s a tad disingenuous to label the shows as such, but I can’t imagine there’s been too much in the way of post-show demands for refunds; Fatlip and Slimkid3 are well-versed in the art of showing the crowd a good time, and that’s ultimately all that matters.

Very very disappointed. Saw them at The Novo by Microsoft a couple months ago...They made the crowd wait for 4 hours! Very silly. Played a mediocre show, played 2-3 good songs and the rest were about weed. They really were advocating pot. Bad bad crowd. Will not see again.

20 years after the first time I saw the pharcyde and this hip hop explosion still delivers. Older now their music seems to have evolved into a "something to see." Dj mike relms is another phenom that can't be missed.

The opening Dj knew exactly how to pump up the crowd for the awesome show The Pharcyde put on. I would definetly see The Pharcyde again. Best $5 I have ever spend. Golden age hip hop lives!

BYP Live Presents Pharcyde! The Pharcyde formed in 1989, from South Central Los Angeles. The original four members of the group are Imani, Slimkid3, Bootie Brown and Fatlip. DJ Mark Luv was the group’s first DJ, followed by producer J-Swift and then J Dilla. The group is perhaps best known for the hit singles “Drop”, “Passin’ Me By” and “Runnin’”, as well as their first album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (1992). The group continues to tour and record, both collaboratively and in solo projects

Hip hop progenitors, The Pharcyde bring their 30th anniversary celebration of debut album ‘ Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde’   to The Night Cat on 22nd February . Formed in 1989, the L.A crew made their name in ’92 with ‘ Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde’ , which became one of the most important hip hop albums of the ‘90s. The record remains one of the most boisterous, musically vibrant rap albums ever released. No surprise that Kanye West once declared it his all time favourite album. Their AU tour features the group’s rappers, Imani, Fatlip and Slimkid3 , who are all legends in their own right. Supporting will be Melbourne’s Yung Shogun , performing a special live set in collaboration with iconic all-star Melbourne band “Now Here This”. His sound was formed by his mother’s love for the classics of blues, jazz and hip-hop, but secretly entranced by a step-father who had a fondness for heavy metal. Yung Shogun entrances with his synthesised rap, with a soundscape that keeps a foot in each world. Plus, DJ MZ RIZK (Rizky's Block Party, Hip Hop High Tea) holds down the party, delivering hip hop, soul, funk & global music goodness to keep you moving all night long.

We acknowledge that this event will be held on Wurundjeri land of the Kulin Nation and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
