Eight Sights to See On Your Campus Visit to Pomona College

Do you know how to improve your profile for college applications.

See how your profile ranks among thousands of other students using CollegeVine. Calculate your chances at your dream schools and learn what areas you need to improve right now — it only takes 3 minutes and it's 100% free.

If you’re a high school student making your college list , you’re probably juggling all sorts of priorities. Maybe you know you want a liberal arts school on the smaller side. Perhaps you want someplace with strong academics, and you know you can compete in a fairly selective admissions process. If this is the case, there are many small schools in the Northeastern United States that might be on your list. But what if you prefer a warmer climate or a West Coast vibe? Would Southern California fit the bill?

Pomona College , tucked into the surprisingly New England-esque college town of Claremont, California, is a selective liberal arts school that is part of the larger Claremont Consortium . Through its unique partnership with four undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutes, it offers students the small-college experience in the context of large university resources and opportunities.

Pomona is located about 35 miles west of Los Angeles and is routinely ranked in the top ten National Liberal Arts Schools by U.S. News and World Reports . It offers 45 majors to choose from, and with an enrollment of just around 1,700, it boasts a student-to-faculty ratio of 8:1.

Are you considering Pomona College, where the breeze is warm, the days are bright, and the school somehow manages to feel like a New England liberal arts institution nestled into a small town in Southern California? If you’re planning a visit, you can expect to meet an engaged and intellectual community of learners, scope out the broad variety of on-campus housing, and see both classic and modern teaching facilities. But there’s much more that you should plan to see as well. If you’re considering a visit to Pomona College, be sure to check out these top eight Claremont sites.

1. José Clemente Orozco’s Prometheus mural in Frary Dining Hall

Orozco was one of the three great Mexican muralists, along with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Pomona College is home to Orozco’s Prometheus mural created in 1930 on a wall inside Frary hall, which is now one of two primary dining halls on campus. The work is widely recognized as one of the artist’s masterpieces, though it sometimes goes unnoticed as students dine beneath it three times a day.

Whether you’re an art history aficionado or not, you’ll appreciate this bold artwork for its sheer size and powerful stance, towering over the formal dining hall. It becomes even more powerful when you learn that this is the first modern fresco mural to be painted in the U.S. by a Mexican artist, and it exists at Pomona thanks to the fundraising efforts of students in the 1920s. Be sure to check it out on your campus tour. While it is of course hard to miss, it’s also easy to pass beneath it without a full understanding of its significance.

2. Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations

The Oldenborg Center serves as the foreign language residence hub at Pomona, as well as dining hall and academic administrative office. It offers a unique living and academic experience to its 129 residents, who live in foreign language sections where they speak the language amongst themselves.

The Center provides language sections in Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese, with each directed by graduate student language residents who are native speakers of their languages. The formal requirements for living in Oldenborg include a year’s study of a foreign language at the college level (or the equivalent) and a willingness to join in on the Center’s extracurricular activities, including meals served at foreign language tables.

Oldenborg is also known on campus as a bit of a maze. Its unique appearance and labyrinth-like hallways were the former home of Joe Menosky, class of 1979, who went on to become the writer and co-producer of three series of Star Trek sequels ( The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine, and Voyager ). It is rumored that he named The Next Generation’s Borg after his old Pomona residence hall, which does have an undeniable starship-like exterior. He has never confirmed nor denied these rumors, but the parallels between the two Borgs are definitely convincing.

3. Dialynas and Sontag Halls

Pomona’s newest residence halls, the Dialynas and Sontag Halls, were completed in spring of 2011 and are home to more than 30 suites, comprised of about 150 single bedrooms. Suites range in size from 3 bedrooms to 6 bedrooms, and each suite has a common living room. But what makes these residence halls remarkable is not their room configuration.

These dorms are truly unique in their construction, having been built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) platinum standards, the highest level of sustainable building. As such, these new residence halls are among the greenest in the country. They boast solar hot water heating, solar voltaic panels, an electricity cutoff switch for each suite, daylight sensors, and low water-use fixtures. Sontag Hall also has a full kitchen on each of its three floors, equipped with Energy Star appliances, and a rooftop garden and patio area.

Although these impressive new structures are home to only upperclassmen, they could well be your future home if you end up attending Pomona College.

4. Smith Campus Center

The Smith Campus Center is the hub of student life on campus. It houses several dining options, including the COOP fountain where you can purchase snacks and casual meals like burgers or chicken fingers, along with the Sagehen Cafe, a student-run restaurant where you can expect a slightly more refined dining experience including waited tables and meals like french onion soup or grilled chicken salad.

In addition to its restaurants, the Smith Campus Center also offers comfortable study spaces featuring couches, arm chairs, and even working fireplaces. Here you will also find the Smith Campus Center Student Programs Office where you can pick up discount tickets to local attractions (think Disneyland, Six Flags, and the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art!) and find student clubs. It is also home to the Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC) Office & Senate operations, the Student Mail Center, email & printer stations, the Writing Center, and the Asian American Resource Center.

It’s easy to see why the Smith Campus Center is always booming. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a Pomona College student who doesn’t pass through it on a daily basis, and many students find themselves here for various reasons several times a day.

5. Studio Art Hall

Pomona’s impressive Studio Art Hall was completed in 2014. At over 35,000 square feet with more than half the building’s exterior made of glass, it is definitely hard to miss.

The Studio Art Hall is described as “a village of interconnected studios to bring together disciplines” ranging from sculpture and painting to digital arts and multimedia. Its open, free-flowing interior lends itself well to interaction and collaboration between both artists and mediums. Its prominence on campus is intended to make the arts — music, theatre, dance and the visual arts — more visible for the entire college community, and it’s an impressive spot to visit regardless of your experience as an artist. You never know, you just might get inspired!

6. Pendleton Pool

It’s not every college that is located in a climate where pool days can occur year round, but Pomona is one of the lucky few. Though the average temperatures in January drop to the 50s, these are still offset by random spikes into the 70s and even 80s. Many students take advantage of this mild climate by visiting the pool.

Pendleton Pool is Pomona’s secondary pool, not to be confused with the Haldeman Aquatic Center where the swim teams and water polo teams practice. Tucked away behind the freshman dorms, Pendleton has a much different vibe, and if it feels more like a community pool, that’s because it is — this is where many local children grew up learning to swim! Now, you can visit on the weekends, lay out your towel, and show off some stunts from the diving board, if you aren’t too busy working on your tan.

7. Some Crust Bakery

Take a five-minute walk down Bonita Avenue, and you’ll find yourself off campus in what is commonly referred to as The Village. This is downtown Claremont, and it’s just about as quaint and picture-perfect as any college town you can imagine. With shady tree-lined shops and more local storefronts than chains, you might feel like you’re in upstate Vermont instead of Southern California.

One of The Villages’ true treasures and a real institution among locals is the Some Crust Bakery. Located at 119 Yale Ave, this building has been home to a bakery for over 100 years and home to Some Crust for nearly 40.

Open daily, the bakery serves up sandwiches, baked goods, tea and coffee to a discerning crowd. Stop here for a quick lunch before you leave, and you won’t be disappointed. Just keep in mind that if you visit on the weekend, the line might weave its way out the door. Don’t worry, though. The wait will be worth it.

8. Folk Music Center Museum and Store

Another site not to be missed in The Village is the Folk Music Center. Part museum, part store, part home to the local music community, this place is also buzzing with activity and its collection of both traditional and rare instruments won’t disappoint even the most experienced musicians.

Speaking of experienced musicians, this store has raised at least one well-known Grammy winner. Opened in 1958 by Ben Harper’s maternal grandparents, Charles and Dorothy Chase, this store was where Ben Harper grew up learning to build, repair, and play musical instruments. The store is still in the family, now owned by his mother, and Harper still sometimes hangs out there, along with his brothers, Joel and Peter, both of whom are musicians themselves.

In a 2014 article in the LA Times , Harper referred to the Folk Music Center as “an oddity that has produced the last 20-some years of my adult life making music. Not only musically but the principles of this place — its music, its art, its poetry, its politics, its spirituality.” You can experience its spirituality yourself by stopping by its 220 Yale Ave storefront during the afternoon, Tuesday-Sunday. You’re sure to be greeted warmly as you browse its eclectic collection, and if you’re lucky, you just might catch an impromptu performance by a member of the Harper family.

If you’re interested in attending Pomona College, a campus visit is bound to lend some insight into the Pomona vibe and values. Both on and off campus, you will likely find a diverse and engaged community. On campus, you’ll find a mix of classic buildings dating back to the 1800s and modern architecture built to the highest levels of sustainability. There’s something to suit almost any interest from the arts to engineering to recreation. Off campus, you’ll find a cozy downtown, easily accessible by foot and brimming with culture.

Overview of Pomona College’s Endowment

Pomona’s endowment exists to fund the College’s educational mission and makes it possible for Pomona to recruit and enroll students from all backgrounds and offer excellent financial aid.

Providing a large share of the College's annual budget, the endowment is drawn on year after year, in what must be a steady and sustainable way, to maintain our lasting commitments to students.

Guided by the principle of intergenerational equity, Pomona’s endowment is carefully managed to ensure that future generations will enjoy its benefits just as much as the current one.

Pomona’s endowment consists of over 1,700 individual endowments that the college invests together as one pool, and collectively they are valued at $2.8 billion as of December 2023.

Each individual endowment must be spent in accordance with donor restrictions, which apply to roughly half of Pomona’s individual funds. (Taken as a whole, the funds that are invested to provide sustainable income distributions each year are known as the principal or corpus.)

As is the practice for many institutional investors, Pomona’s endowment is primarily invested in co-mingled funds, where monies from multiple entities are invested as one pool. This provides access to the best public equity managers and allows for investments in private companies that the College would be too small to invest in on its own.

How Students Benefit from Pomona’s Endowment

The College spends roughly $120,000 per year to provide a Pomona education to each student. Student revenues from tuition and other payments account for about half that figure. The rest comes from the annual endowment payout, fundraising and other sources. Every student’s education is subsidized by the endowment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the endowment.

The aim of the endowment is to provide strong resources to sustain Pomona’s enduring commitments both to current students and future generations of students and scholars. The endowment, carefully stewarded over decades, allows the College to provide a world-class liberal arts education, recruit students from all backgrounds and offer excellent financial aid.

How much is taken from the endowment each year?

Pomona relies on the endowment year after year to support our academic excellence and extensive financial aid. To make sure we can continue to meet these commitments to students over the decades to come, we have limits on how much we can take from the endowment each year.

Spending from the endowment is governed by the College’s spending rule. Ratified by the Board of Trustees, the rule limits the payout between 4.5% and 5.5% of the average endowment unit market value during the previous 20 quarters.

The precise amount is determined by applying a 2% growth rate to the previous year’s spending per unit, subject to the 4.5%-5.5% lower and upper limits.

Who manages the endowment?

The Investments Committee of the Board of Trustees sets the endowment’s investment policy and approves the hiring and firing of investment managers. The day-to-day management of the College’s investments is conducted by Pomona’s Investments Office.

Why doesn’t Pomona take withdrawals from the endowment for one-time spending needs?

Currently, the College is fully utilizing its endowment. Pomona depends on the endowment to support the operations of the College not only today, but for the future; Every $10 million in endowment provides approximately $500,000 in operating budget support. So, if the College were to take $20 million out to reduce tuition or fund an urgent need now, we would have to find an immediate replacement for $1 million of operating revenues now and every year moving forward.

Are any of the funds collected from students invested in the endowment?

Funds collected from students, such as tuition and fees, are separate from the endowment and are used solely to support College operations.

What does Pomona disclose about its endowment holdings?

On an annual basis, Pomona typically discloses information about its investment holdings in two documents. The first is in the footnotes to our annual financial statements. The footnotes contain information on the amount of undrawn capital commitments to private funds, liquidity provisions of marketable assets, annual performance, and high-level asset allocation.

The College also provides an annual factsheet to existing and potential purchasers of charitable gift annuities. This factsheet also shows the College’s asset allocation, along with investment returns against various benchmarks.

Learn more from our financial information and disclosures page .

What are the current policies related to endowment holdings?

Beyond the requirements of U.S. law, Pomona’s investment policies do not single out any industry, nation, nationality or region of the world for investment exclusion. There are no plans to alter this approach to single out any individual industry, nation, nationality or region for exclusion.

How is information about Pomona’s endowment and budget shared with the community?

Senior staff from the Treasurer’s division often speak with stakeholder groups including donors, faculty, staff, and ASPC regarding the budget and management of the College’s endowment. If you are interested in arranging for one of these meetings, please send a request to [email protected] .

Where can I find more details on Pomona’s finances?

Pomona's annual financial statements covering more than a decade are available on the financial statements page .

Rory McIlroy denies rumors he is close to accepting LIV Golf offer, says future is on PGA Tour

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 14: Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland acknowledges the crowd on the 18th green during the final round of the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 14, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Warren Little/Getty Images)

Rory McIlroy has denied rumors that he is close to accepting an offer with LIV Golf.

Speaking to Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis at the PGA Tour ’s RBC Heritage event Tuesday, McIlroy shut down a report from London-based newspaper City A.M. saying that he would receive a staggering $850 million contract and two percent equity in LIV in order to leave the PGA Tour.

McIlroy said he intends to play on the PGA Tour for the rest of his career.

“I honestly don’t know how these things get started,” McIlroy said. “I’ve never been offered a number from LIV, and I’ve never contemplated going to LIV. Again, I think I’ve made it clear over the past two years that I don’t think it’s something for me. That doesn’t mean I judge people that have went to play over there. I think one of the things that I’ve realized over the past two years is people can make their own decisions for whatever they think is best for themselves.

“Who are we to judge them for that? But personally, for me, my future is here on the PGA Tour, and it’s never been any different.”

Since the onset of the divide in men’s professional golf, McIlroy has served as the PGA Tour’s de facto spokesperson, repeatedly pledging his loyalty. When the June 6 framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian PIF was first announced, McIlroy told the media the deal made him feel like a “sacrificial lamb,” and he “still hates” LIV Golf. He later left the PGA Tour policy board .

McIlroy’s stance on the sport’s division has been evolving. Recently, the 24-time PGA Tour winner has been calling for the unification of the game on a global stage. As negotiations continue to stall behind closed doors, McIlroy has said the current state of the game is “not sustainable” and that the two parties must move forward with a finalized deal.

Recent major champions Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith and Bryson DeChambeau are all members of the Saudi-backed circuit.

“No idea,” McIlroy said of the report’s origins. “Over the last two years, there’s been so many rumors of guys, and I think the one thing I’ve realized as well is guys need to keep an open mind. I’m sure there’s been players that are still on the PGA Tour that have talked to the guys from LIV and had offers, and whatever.

“Yeah, I have no idea. It’s never even been a conversation for us. It’s one of the things — it’s unfortunate that we have to deal with it. This is the state that our game is in. But I’m obviously here today, and I’m playing the PGA Tour event next week, and I’ll play the PGA Tour for the rest of my career.”

McIlroy will tee it up at Harbour Town Golf Links on Thursday. He is coming off a T22 finish at Augusta National.

Local News | ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ finale includes Claremont ‘courthouse’ protest

pomona college tour

Remember when HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” filmed at Pomona College , way back in March 2023? I’d almost forgotten it myself, and I was there.

Nearly 13 months later, the shoot ended up as a scene in the series finale. (Apparently it takes a lot of effort to produce a semi-improvised comedy.)

At the time, we looky-loos along Claremont’s College Avenue saw protesters waving handmade signs outside the stately Carnegie Building, which seemed to be standing in for a courthouse in Atlanta. That proved to be true.

As the finale April 7 revealed, series star and creator Larry David was heading to court after inadvertently violating Georgia election law. He had casually given an old acquaintance a bottle of water while she was waiting in line to vote.

This made him a flash point for voting-rights debates. Outside the courthouse, protesters chanted “Free Larry” or held signs reading “Justice for Larry,” while one counter-protester brandished a sign declaring “I Don’t Trust the Guy.” Ted Danson, a frequent “Curb” guest, was there in Claremont for the scene.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" shot a scene at Pomona College's Carnegie Building in Claremont on March 13, 2023 that was used in the series' April 7, 2024 finale. Finally! (Photo by David Allen, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin/SCNG)

College Avenue is shown, as is Bridges Auditorium and the Carnegie Building. To disguise Claremont’s leafy, low-rise look, “Curb” had to get creative. Rob Lawrence posted screenshots on the Claremont Connects Facebook page . As Ron Scott remarked: “I like how they superimposed the Atlanta skyline behind Pomona College.”

Making Claremont resemble Atlanta must have blown the season’s entire special-effects budget.

This “Curb” episode was a meta-commentary on the last, controversial episode of “Seinfeld,” which Larry David wrote. In that finale, Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer are convicted of violating a Good Samaritan law by refusing to help someone. In “Curb,” Larry is found guilty of doing a good deed, which is very unlike him.

He goes to jail. But, aided by Jerry Seinfeld, he’s freed on a technicality and goes home.

The episode’s apt title: “No Lessons Learned.”

More ‘Curb’

Two related notes. Pomona College has been the scene of real-life activism lately over the war in Gaza , including a sit-down street protest last Thursday that briefly blocked College Avenue, only paces from the fake protest on “Curb.”

And the glimpse of Bridges Auditorium in “Curb” reminds me that in 2017, “Seinfeld” star Jason Alexander, who played George Costanza, and whose son was attending Pomona College, was interviewed onstage at Bridges . What are the odds that two “Seinfeld” figures would ever visit the same block of Claremont, even six years apart?

It was an entertaining talk, by the way.

“I’m a college dropout,” Alexander said at one point. “But I think it’s great that colleges invite me as an example to young people.”

History Day in SB

History Day at the Santa Fe , the event Saturday at the Santa Fe Depot in San Bernardino, seemed like a success to anyone present. Inland Empire history mavens from the desert and suburbia alike converged at the train station.

They bought books and posters, toured the depot’s San Bernardino History and Railroad Museum, listened to pioneer music, joined historical societies and made connections with like-minded folks.

I met Kelli Shapiro, whose new book, “Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley Movie Theatres,” is a likely future topic in this space.

Most visitors glanced at my table and kept walking, which was to be expected. But subscribers from all four IE newspaper territories that run my column — Riverside, Redlands, Ontario and San Bernardino — stopped to say hello.

Some wished me a happy belated birthday. Most encouraged me to keep writing, said they rely on me to keep them informed and entertained — awww — or expressed their loyalty to our product. Among the diehards is Mark Johnson of Hemet, who assured me: “I will never stop taking the paper.”

A few folks said they recognized me right off. Said Peter Lenker of Redlands: “You’re better looking than you are in the paper, and you can quote me.” A second reader said the same.

In a somewhat contrary view, a third reader told me I look exactly the same in person as I do in the paper.

As long as I don’t look worse in person. That would be bad.

This exhibit at the Riverside Art Museum is by Brooklyn artist Rico Gatson, who grew up in Riverside. (Photo by David Allen, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin/SCNG)

At the Riverside Art Museum through Sunday, April 21, is “Icons,” an exhibit of collage portraits of such Black creative figures as Chuck Berry, Alice Coltrane, Isaac Hayes and bell hooks. Artist Rico Gatson lives in Brooklyn, but he grew up in Riverside in the 1970s and ’80s and graduated from North High, where he played on the football team. His mother lives in Moreno Valley. “He was so proud: ‘I get to do a show in my hometown,’” curator Lisa Henry told me. “His whole family came to the opening in February. It was so fun.”

Roman Gabriel dies at 83. The first Filipino American quarterback in the NFL was MVP in 1969

Roman Gabriel

Roman Gabriel had big size and a big arm when he was the No. 2 draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 1962. Even while playing in an era of grinding it out on the ground, he still holds the  Rams’ team record with 154 touchdown passes .

Gabriel, the first Filipino American quarterback in the NFL and the league MVP in 1969, died Saturday. He was 83.

His son Roman Gabriel III  announced his father’s death  on social media, saying he died peacefully at home of natural causes.

In 2021, the elder Gabriel told the Los Angeles Times, “I am retired with heart problems and arthritis but happy.” He said he split time between Wilmington, North Carolina, and Little River, South Carolina.

“We mourn the loss of Rams legend and football pioneer, Roman Gabriel,”  the Rams said on X , formerly known as Twitter.

Gabriel, who played at North Carolina State and was a two-time player of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.

He was 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, big for a quarterback in that era. Green Bay coach Vince Lombardi once described him as “a big telephone pole,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

Gabriel played 11 years for the Rams and five years with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was traded after the Rams acquired John Hadl.

Roman Gabriel

“Gabe was an amazing player and an even better mentor. Words can’t explain my thanks for what a great teammate he was,” retired quarterback  Ron Jaworski , whom Gabriel backed up on the Eagles in his final season, posted on X. “A special player and a better man!”

Gabriel was such a hot prospect that the Rams made him the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft, and the Oakland Raiders of the rival AFL selected him No. 1. Gabriel wound up signing with the Rams, though it took until George Allen was hired as coach in 1966 for Gabriel to start leaving a mark.

From 1967 to 1970, Gabriel led the Rams to a 41-14-4 record and two division titles, though never a playoff game. He was voted MVP in 1969 after throwing for 2,549 yards with 24 touchdown passes and five rushing scores.

Allen left for Washington after the 1970, and Gabriel was shipped to the Eagles in 1973. He was the NFL comeback player of the year, leading the league with 23 touchdown passes and 3,219 yards, as he tried to help revive the Eagles’ offense.

After retiring, Gabriel worked briefly for CBS, calling NFL games.

He went into coaching, with stints at Cal Poly Pomona, the Boston Breakers of the USFL and Raleigh-Durham in the World League of American Football.

Gabriel also dabbled in acting. His movie credits included “Skidoo” starring Jackie Gleason in 1968, and 1969’s “The Undefeated” starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson. He appeared in such TV shows as “Gilligan’s Island,” “Perry Mason,” “Ironside” and “Wonder Woman.” He also joined Bob Hope on a USO tour of Vietnam.
