The Kalencom Potette Plus 2-in-1 Travel Potty isn’t quite as compact as the Oxo, which is why it didn’t make our number one spot on the best travel potty for toddlers. But, it is a fun, colorful unit that includes a non-slip grip and a nice ergonomic design that kids love.

We're going to talk about tips for traveling while potty training with a newly, or currently potty training child.

We're fortunately past the days of group quarantines and blanket mask mandates, and that excitement and newness of traveling - especially with littles - hasn't worn off. In fact, our desire to travel has even moved past cars, trains and planes into things like "astro travel" and "eco travel", so says Conde Nast Travel . And though you may not be ready for astro travel with your potty training little one, we can make travel just a bit easier with these tips below.

Even if you're not planning on going super far, (like the moon or Mars...) I think these tips will be helpful for you.

If we go back to Paul Revere, do you remember him? “One, if I land two, if I by sea” Ironically we use “#1” for something, and then we use “#2”, for something else with potty training, but, we're going to talk about traveling by land and traveling by sea. For the sake of argument, we're going to move it to air travel.

If you are in a car traveling somewhere, you have different options than you have at home, right? You're not necessarily having your particular potty training place that or that potty training space that potentially could be replicated. 

You could bring the little potty with you, but the actual environment, the space where they are is going to be different and that's okay. But, I would recommend, as best you can, to try and keep things as similar as possible. But, you do not need to haul everything from your bathroom with you , but if you haven't started planning it, I would keep in mind that this might be something that you need to consider for the future.

The idea of “start as you mean to go on,” can be really helpful if you're starting from the beginning. Here are a few things I would recommend for traveling. 

Tips for Before You Leave When You Travel While Potty Training:

• Talk to your child about the trip. Explain that you'll be traveling and that they'll need to use the potty. Use simple language and visuals to help them understand.
• Pack plenty of supplies. This includes diapers or pull-ups, underwear, wipes, and a travel potty seat.
• Plan your route. Make sure there are plenty of rest stops or bathrooms along the way.
• Talk to your child's caregiver. If your child is staying with a caregiver while you're away, talk to them about your potty training routine. This will help them stay on track.

Travel Potty Training Tips for on the go:

• Take breaks every two hours. This will help prevent accidents. Even fi your child typically doesn't go this often, offer them the opportunity more often while traveling. Whether it's a change of sleep, types of food, amount of hydration or the climate they are in, more frequent bathroom trips if pretty frequent for adults and children alike.
• Let your child use the potty before and after you leave a rest stop or bathroom. This will help them get used to using the potty on the go. If you stop for food at a fast food place - offer the toilet when you first sit down, or hit the play place. Then, eat your food, then offer the bathroom again. This is especially helpful if your child hasn't had a bowel movement in the last day. Often people who have been sitting for a long time don't "feel" like they need to poop, just that they need to pee. After they empty their bladder and get some food in their belly it's very likely they will be ready to have a bowel movement. If you immediately pop back into the car it's likely you'll have a, "I need to go potty" being yelled from the back seat in a few minutes time!
• Use a travel potty seat. This will make it easier for your child to use the potty in public bathrooms. Or, if you want to potty on the go you can pop it next to your car and hold a towel up to make a bathroom, or pop it in the back of a SUV, or the floor of the van.
• Be patient and encouraging. Accidents are a normal part of potty training. Don't get discouraged if your child has an accident. Just keep practicing and be patient.

Here are some additional tips for potty training while traveling by car, plane, and train:

• Pull over at a rest stop or gas station as soon as your child says they need to go to the potty.
• If you're driving a long distance, let your child get out of the car and run around every two hours. This will help them relieve themselves and burn off some energy.
• Bring a potty seat that attaches to the car seat. This will make it easier for your child to use the potty on long trips.
• Take your child to the bathroom before you board the plane.
• Ask the flight attendant for a potty seat. Most airlines have them available.
• If your child has an accident, don't worry. Just ask the flight attendant for help. They're used to dealing with accidents.

There are several different brands out there.

There's Oxo , which is the most popular one. I would say that's the best of it. It’s basically a seat reducer that goes on top of your toilet and has little flaps that come out so that it sits on the toilet seat, like a regular adult size toilet seat. Or, you can fold those little flaps underneath and have them stand up as little legs.

You can either have your kiddo just like pee onto the ground if you wanted to, but they have inserts. They have reusable inserts. They also have biodegradable bag options . Then, they also have just plastic bag version that has a little pad in the middle of it. So it's basically like a thin plastic bag. And then it has a little soaker pad. So it's not as likely to spill all over the place.

And it's not quite as wishy-washy in there after you're done. Then, you just tie it up and throw it away. Like you would a doggie bag if you were on a walk with a doggie, right? So a travel potty, I would highly recommend it for various reasons, but honestly, partially because I feel like we're still in this society where you could go to the local anything, whether it be a Starbucks, and the bathroom isn’t even open. 

So even just realizing,  if you go somewhere to go grab yourself a tea or coffee or something, and there's no bathrooms, what are you going to do? A travel potty is super, super pivotal! 

On that note, don’t forget both the bags AND you need to bring something to actually wipe the human with. Bring either wet wipes or just regular toilet paper, either work because you're just gonna pop them in that bag and dispose of them anyway.

2. If you're in a car, I recommend buying a waterproof "carseat" liner

Save it and use it for wet-bottomed beach trips down the road.

Because they can be specific to your specific car seat, you have to enter in and into Amazon or something like that as one word. So enter  “carseat,” not “car seat”. Otherwise, you'd get suggestions for a full car, adult sized seats in a car covers, maybe for an adult who has urinary problems and they're trying to keep it dry. So this is more for the child who's potty training. Enter in “ Britax + waterproof carseat liner ”.

They’re also great for kids who just have wet bottoms coming from the beach or something like that. We still use it with our booster seats! You can get them per brand that matches up with your car seat manufacturer. That's what I would recommend. But then they also have some generic ones that haven't necessarily been safety tested with your particular brand, so use your discretion, but they can fit on most carseats (and then typically also on booster seats). So it's just water resistant or waterproof on the bottom and then sort of like a cloth lining on top. And then you can just toss them in the washing machine super easily, which I promise is so much easier than actually having to pull apart your entire child's car seat or even just the cover of a booster seat for the future. Just pull it off and pop that in the wash (instead of having to take off straps, etc.). Avoid a big ordeal. So I'd highly, highly recommend getting those two things. 

• Get a travel potty
• A car seat or a booster seat cover, as the case may be. (again, use your discretion as far as safety and what brand you're getting and all of tha)..

Those would be my two biggest suggestions for actual land, meaning via car or train or bus, or however it is bike travel that you're going to be doing.

For travel via airplane, I'm going to say for airplanes, that is a different case scenario. So think about it. If you're on an airplane as an adult and that “buckle, your seatbelt light goes on and you have to go to the bathroom… What do you do?

Sometimes you have to wait for a solid 10 minutes, 15 minutes, half hour, 45 minutes. It can be a decent amount of time, depending on how far you're going and how much turbulence you hit. Think about that for your potty training child. Are they realistically going to be able to hold on to pee for 20 minutes a half an hour?

If you don't have like a hundred percent confidence that your child can actually hold it. I would highly recommend putting a diaper on potentially over top of their underwear. So meaning you have on the child's underwear and then either put on a diaper. When I say diaper, I include pull-ups in those. 

You can use a cloth pull up, or you could use a disposable pull up. You could use a swim diaper over top of their underwear. Use what you feel like would make sense for your family. But I just don't want you to end up in a situation where your child is potty trained, but there are actual physical reasons why you can't just get up and take them to the bathroom. Honestly, in this day and age, I would probably just buy a pair of Peejamas and call it quits. One pair for the travel to the airport and another to change into at the airport.

Be mindful that situation can happen in the airport too.

Sometimes you're stuck checking luggage, or at baggage claim or going through security. All of a sudden is getting searched through when your child needs to go to the bathroom and you can see the bathroom. It's so close, but you can't get to it. Just realizing that you might have scenarios like that when you are traveling, especially internationally, just because the lines can be so much longer and the wait can be longer.

Being prepared for those situations is pivotal. When you are traveling even moreso than just a daytrip, I would highly recommend packing a bag that includes extras of everything . And I mean all the way down to shoes, unless your child's actually going to be wearing a Pull-Up®  or something like that. The entire time I would recommend bringing extra everything, even shoes. Maybe it's just a little pair of flip flops or something that they don't normally wear something so that if poo poo gets on their shoe or pee gets on their shoe because they're training, right? 

• When you are traveling even moreso than just a daytrip, I would highly recommend packing a bag that includes extras of everything .

That's specifically what we're talking about. Then you have a backup for them. Potentially even throw an extra shirt in your bag for good measure. I wouldn't say a whole outfit for you, but if you're going to risk it on a plane with a newly potty trained child, realize that they're probably going to be sitting either next to you or depending on their age, on your lap, and that you might end up with whatever they miss on your lap for a little while. 

Either bring yourself a change of clothes or consider the idea of having the backup. It's not going to be something that you leave on the entire trip.

I’m not recommending using Pull-Ups®  around the clock. What I'm recommending is that you have an extra backup layer for the situation where it's physically impossible or potentially physically impossible to actually get to a bathroom for your child when they need it, whether they're communicating it or not. 

Perhaps think about grabbing some Sposies for good measure so that you're not fully reverting to diapers, but they give you extra undies protection in case you're stuck in turbulence.

That means you pop that extra layer on over top of their underwear because they should be used to underwear at this point.

If they're going commando, I would say just straight up go to a diaper for the travel portion. So it's probably what four hours, or maybe if it's an international flight, 12 hours, something like that?

Take them to the bathroom on the flight, and after they actually go to the bathroom, get rid of that backup option and then carry on (depending on the flight’s length - or just keep it on for the duration). 

As far as traveling, I would highly recommend setting yourself a phone reminder, or getting your kiddo a potty watch . Set a timer versus a time of day reminder to take your child to the bathroom.  

So I have the different countries’ time zones, right on my phone. I have the world clock. Your time zones are going to change if you're going to different places. The catch is if you put an alarm for 2:00 PM and you haven't reset, or your turned your phone back on, or it hasn't like caught up to the new time zone, you might miss the reminder to take your child to the bathroom. 

That said, I would set it as a timer. Do the timer based on their age, don't do every 20 minutes. 

They'll go crazy if you do! They won’t need a reminder every 20 minutes, especially if you're traveling. Be realistic, that if you're going to rely on your child being potty trained, while you're traveling, then they should be able to go for, I would say at least two hours before you even start  playing the game of underwear on an airplane. 

Hopefully that helps you guys out a little bit, as far as what to expect, as far as travel goes, I would say just even out and about like day trips and things I have a travel potty in my car trunk all the time. And when I say all the time, I sincerely mean one hundred percent of the time. Like it's either in there or it's because it's drying out because I rinsed it off and then it's going straight back in there.

Here are some additional tips for potty training while traveling abroad:

• Learn a few basic phrases in the local language. This will help you communicate with your child about using the potty. Maybe even teach the word for "toilet" or "potty" or "pee" or "poo" so if your child says it and you don't hear, maybe someone in the surrounding society can help you out!
• Be prepared for different cultural norms. In some countries, it's not considered rude for children to use the bathroom outside. Depending on whether you are in rural, suburban or urban areas can help dictate where and how it is socially appropriate for both you, and your child, to use the potty. In some majors cities they are hosed down daily and it is expected that small children will pee and poo at the curbside with crotchless pants and it will be washed away within a few hours.
• Bring a travel potty seat. This will make it easier for your child to use the potty in public bathrooms...and if you can't find a bathroom, you ca make your own "port-a-potty" on the side of the road or in a parking lot with just the travel potty and a towel. Don't forget to pack toilet paper and wipes as well.
• Be patient and encouraging. Accidents are a normal part of potty training, especially when traveling to a new place. And my 7-year-old adds, "You should be patient and encouraging because it will help your child learn to use the bathroom more." She's featured in a few of the Diapers-to-Flush instructional videos:

Just like most things. there are a variety of travel potty types for toddlers. Which option to go with depends on what you and your little one prefer. I personally used one that included the potty bowl simply because I have twins and couldn’t guarantee that I could get a disposable bag in both of the potties in time.

The main three types of travel potties for toddlers: 1) Includes the actual potty bowl/liner PRO: You can use the potty as is, without a disposable bag CON: Most bowls are collapsible and made of silicone, which some find hard to clean. Also may be more expensive, depending on the brand.

2) Only includes toilet seat and legs PRO: A bit more compact since a bowl isn’t included. This style is usually less expensive than the style with a bowl, although some have the option to purchase a bowl or liner. CON: Must be used with a disposable bag. 3) Toilet seat cover only PRO: Very compact and the least expensive style CON: A real toilet must be available to use- providing less “on the go” flexibility. Also, some kids have reported “pinching” on their legs/bottoms as a result of the folds on the seat.

When I first saw a travel urinal, I was surprised that they made them. What a novel idea! This is perfect for anytime you’re away from home and your toddler may need to go- running errands, road trips, the park, etc.

Though we tested multiple seat covers, the Homsis scored the best in our testing and was by far the most stable.

The Homsis comes in a plastic bag for storage, and folds by quarters to a perfect travel size. Suction cups on the bottom of the seat help stabilize it to the toilet to avoid unwanted slipping. Note that we tested this seat on a wooden and porcelain standard toilet, and the suction cups stuck much better to the porcelain.

There are two seams for folding on each side of the seat, as well as one in the back, which could pose a risk for pinching while a child is seated. However, we felt that because of less movement from the seat due to the suction cups, there was much less risk of the seams opening and closing enough to pinch while in use.

Another benefit to this particular seat is that it includes a pry bar. This plastic bar is used to remove the suction cups from the surface of the toilet seat, making for a much easier and more sanitary removal process. This is especially beneficial if you plan to use the seat when traveling and using a public toilet if you don’t want to touch the adult toilet.

When testing this seat’s cleanability, we liked that the plastic material was very easy to clean. Some seats seemed to hold drops of liquid, but on this seat’s surface, liquid beaded up and rolled easily into the toilet.

Once folded, the Homsis measures to about 7″ tall and 6″ wide, making it very easy to store at home in a cabinet or toss into a suitcase, diaper bag, or backpack for travel.

The Homsis is a great option for families on the go or for parents wanting a stable but easily removable potty seat for their little one who is potty training or newly potty trained.

Another potty seat cover we highly recommend is the Logie and Gray Poppy Potty .

This seat is similar in style to the OXO Tot, being a freestanding potty that uses a disposable bag to catch urine for clean and easy disposal.

This seat does not include absorbent pads in the bags, so you have to be careful of splashing, but the bags are biodegradable and overall very easy to install. The bags also slip over the top of the seat and tuck into openings on the sides of the legs. We thought the bags on the OXO Tot were a little easier to install, but these were still very effective and more came in a package.

Though the seat is only about 4 1/2″ off the ground, both our one-year-old and three-year-old test subjects seemed to be comfortable sitting on it. Once a child is done going potty, the disposable bag can be disposed of and the Poppy Potty’s legs fold inward for it to slip into a canvas storage bag.

My Carry Potty

A cute and fun travel option that we tested is the My Carry Potty .

The My Carry Potty can be ordered in a variety of cute, kid-friendly styles and looks like a small suitcase. The seat opens up to have a small potty opening that allows kids to use the restroom from anywhere. This is very helpful during potty training when your little one may not have much control and needs to go quickly.

We liked that this potty chair is cute and very discreet. When traveling with the My Carry Potty, it looks so much like a kid’s suitcase that nobody would think twice when seeing it. It’s very small when folded at about 10 1/4″ tall, 9 1/4″ wide, and 5 1/4″ deep. It can easily slide into the trunk of a car or even be used as a personal item on an airplane.

Because it sits directly on the ground, we felt that the chair was very stable. However, it is very low to the ground. The seat itself is only about 4 inches off the ground once opened up, so taller kids may have to adjust the way they are sitting to ensure they don’t make a mess when going to the bathroom.

The My Carry Potty includes a locking mechanism and a leakproof seal to keep contents trapped inside. When we tested the chair, we poured juice inside, closed it and shook the folded container around without any leaking. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend keeping the liquids inside if you do have the capability to dump it, though.

This is a seat that kids will love to pick out and use. Besides the dinosaur theme that we tested, the seat can be ordered in other animal designs like a ladybug, fox, or penguin, or also in solid colors like pink or blue.

This was the highest price option we tested a little over $30, so you will want to make sure it fits your needs and lifestyle before purchasing.

Potty seat covers and travel potty chairs, in general, are not very expensive products. The prices of the potties we tested ranged from around $10 to the mid $30 range, with an average of around $15-$20.

Standalone potty chairs tended to price a little higher than the seat covers, with the most expensive option being the My Carry Potty. We did not really think that the price point affected the quality of the products, as there were many great choices in a range of prices, giving you lots of options when it’s time to potty train.

How We Tested

Some of the most common complaints we noted when researching these potty seats are that they are unstable, difficult to clean, and too big or small.

Other common complaints were that they trapped a lot of urine or that they pinched kids’ legs when seated.

Based on this information, we geared our testing criteria toward four different categories:

Testing categories, design quality.

In this category, we tested the design aspects of each potty. We set up each one and had a child sit on it to test its stability. We took into account if it had any stabilizing elements, such as grip pads or suction cups. A child should feel secure when using the restroom, and many critical reviews complained that kids felt like they were going to fall when using a potty seat.

We also tested the practicality of the design in this category, noting if it was too bulky to really be considered “portable,” if it had seams on the seat that could pinch a child’s legs, or if a child could easily slip their fingers under the seat and pinch them.

For example, we liked the Maliton Green Frog potty seat a lot, but the front ends could easily be pulled up and one of our test subjects did slip her fingers underneath and get pinched.

Here are the overall scores in the Design Quality category:

We were pleased with the features of many of the seat covers. Some, like the Jool Baby Foldable and the Homsis came with suction cups to secure the cover to the toilet seat. Others, like the Gimars and the Maliton came with rubber pads to help stop sliding.

The Hippypotamus included bands that slid over the seams of the seat to protect a child’s legs and bottom from getting pinched. This was a feature we wish was included on more of the seat covers.

Generally speaking, the freestanding potty chairs were more stable than the seat covers since they sit directly on the floor and are low to the ground. We did notice, though, that the chairs tended to be very low to the ground and were not always as comfortable.

We also noted whether or not potties that may hold liquid would leak. One such style of potty is the OneDone Urinal. This cute, boys-only cup includes a funnel that slows down any potential leakage. When we filled the urinal with liquid, closed it, and shook it up, a few drops leaked out, so we would recommend dumping it as soon as possible, but it does well at keeping liquid contained under normal conditions.

Cleanability

In this category, we tested each potty to see how easily it could clean when taking on inevitable messes. To keep things sanitary, we used a squirt bottle of apple juice and sprayed it on and in the seats. We tested if the chair potties were easy to empty or dispose of messes. Potties that have cracks or crevices that trap urine are more difficult to clean.

A couple of seats, like the OXO Tot, included absorbent pads in their disposable bags. We liked these better than potties with just plain bags because the absorbent pads prevented splashing and made clean-up much easier. All of the seats with any kind of bag, though, were very easy to keep clean.

Seats like the BabyBjorn Smart Potty and the Summer Infant Play had removable bowls that could be easily dumped into a toilet after use. We did find, though, that seats like these tended to have crevices where the bowl met the seat that could catch liquid and either drip or be harder to clean up.

Standard potty seat covers that simply rest on the top of an adult toilet seat were overall the easiest to keep clean since they are not collecting any waste themselves. There was also less splashing with these kinds of seats, since there was more distance between the seat and bowl than with a shorter potty chair.

Something else we took note of was whether or not a potty included a splash guard. Many critical reviews complained that they didn’t feel like their boy could easily use certain seats because of the lack of a splash guard. Many of the portable toilet seats did not include a splash guard since several of them folded into quarters and were open at the front. All of the non-folding seats did include splash guards.

We were pleased that most of the potties did wipe clean pretty easily with a damp cloth.

Portability

In this category, we tested to see if the potties could easily be used in travel.

Most of the seat covers came with some kind of storage bag. These not only helped keep them contained but also helped keep things sanitary by keeping the seat folded into a clean, confined space.

The folding potty seat covers were by far the most portable option we tested. Those particular seats fold to a quarter of their unfolded size and can easily slip into a diaper bag, backpack, or even the seat pocket of a car.

Though a portable toilet seat is certainly more travel-friendly than a freestanding chair, the chair-style potties did have decent portability. They could all easily fit in the trunk of a car for use on the go.

Even some of the non-foldable options came with carry bags for easy transport. The Logie and Gray Poppy Potty, though a freestanding potty chair, folds into a compact circle that slides into a canvas drawstring bag for travel and storage.

In the usability section, we tested how user-friendly each of the potties was. We set them all up, had children sit on them, took them down for storage, and determined their universality.

Most of the potties were pretty easy to set up and did not have very many components. The only ones that required much assembly were those that included disposable urine bags, and that setup process is generally very simple.

Here are the usability rankings for each seat:

We had child test subjects sit on each of the seats to see if they were size appropriate and comfortable. A lot of the potty chairs, like the BabyBjorn and the My Carry Potty were very low to the ground, and the test subjects, especially the three-year-old, seemed a little uncomfortable.

The seat covers did not have the issue of being too low to the ground, but if they slid around at all on the regular toilet, the children did not seem as comfortable sitting on them. We felt that the Gimars and the Kalencom when folded out slid around on the toilet the most.

We tested the disassembly of each potty, especially the seat covers, to see the process. If you had to touch the actual toilet to remove the seat cover, we docked a few points. This was a common complaint among critical reviews, as people wanted to avoid touching the toilet, especially in public restrooms. Seats like the Homsis with its pry bar scored higher in this area.

Finally, we tested the universality of each potty, both in gender usability as well as how seats fit on various types of toilets. Certain ones, like the OneDone Urinal, scored lower in this area because it cannot be used by both boys and girls. However, the OneDone can be ordered in styles suitable for girls. Our preference is potties with features like splash guards or that can easily be used on toilets of different shapes.

Travel Potty Seat Safety

We are not aware of any credible research on the safety of travel potty seats, nor are we aware of any statistics directly related to accidents or injuries while using one. We did find one seat that was recalled because of lead paint many years ago.

When testing these products, though some slipped around a bit, we did not feel that the designs of any of the potties were unsafe. All of the potty chairs were low enough to the ground to prevent danger, and even the seat covers that slipped some never felt like they would fall into or off the adult toilet.

For any seats that have included instructions, is it important that parents follow the directions when setting up the travel potties. Additionally, regardless of the safety measures taken by manufacturers, an adult should remain nearby for safety while a child is using a travel potty.

The absorbent biodegradable liners keep mess to a minimum while out and about, and there's a travel bag too, so you can take it with you on the train, plane, bus or however you are travelling. The reusable plastic hard liner pops in and out so you can use it as a normal potty at home. M&B tester and Contributor Sophie Knight said: "This is an innovation for potty training as it saves you buying three products. It's easy to set up and use, and quick for when your little one needs to go - there's never any time to hang around so it's great that it clicks together quickly. The hard plastic liner makes it easy to transform into a normal potty for at home; however, the design means it looks a bit dented from the start. I'm assuming the collapsible design is about saving on postage costs, but once opened out it doesn't collapse again, and looks a bit clumsy. That's really the only downside."

Mums felt the Potette Max made potty training less stressful as it's so convenient and easy to use, with mum tester Sikha saying: "it is one item that can be used as a potty or toilet seat and folds small so is easy to transport." As with the Potette Plus 2-in-1 we reviewed above, mums felt it made the potty training process easier as their children got used to the seat as a potty and could transition to using the seat on the toilet. Mum Emine said her daughter was getting stressed when she had to use different toilets but with this one, "she got used to it and she didn’t get any stress while we needed to use some other toilet."

How is this different from the Potette Plus 2-in-1? It's the addition of the hard liner, meaning it can be used as a standard potty at home - the Plus doesn't feature this.

You might not think a cardboard potty would be strong enough, but the Tron has been tested to hold up to 30kg of weight, so can easily hold your toddler; M&B tester and Contributor Sophie Knight said: "I think this is a great idea, perfect for holidays or days out. The potty folds up really small before use, so you can easily keep one in your bag; it's surprisingly strong and my daughter sat on it safely while peeing. It's then easy to fold up and dispose of. I will always keep one or two of these in the car while on trips, and one in my handbag too."

Parents thought this collapsible, portable, and disposable potty was convenient to have in your bag as an emergency potty if you're not out for long. It would also be great for short journeys, camping, or festivals. Parents liked how small and light it is, making it a better option than some of the bulkier travel potties when travelling. Our mum tester, Karen, felt: "you can really forget that you are carrying it around. • Take a potty everywhere - either buy a travel potty or pack up the one you're using at home - don't expect your little one to sit on a public toilet.

Potty training has to be one of the hardest things you have to do as a parent. It can be a long, frustrating, and tedious process for some parents and toddlers.

As if potty training wasn’t hard enough, trying to potty train a toddler while traveling adds even more complication. That is why we use a travel potty for toddlers to potty train our two-year-old.

Honestly, potty training isn’t going well for us. Our son turned two a few weeks ago, and it has been a struggle.

To make him more comfortable, we use a travel potty seat at home, so he can get used to using the same travel potty seat when we are traveling.

For parents out there struggling with potty training, don’t get discouraged. We are having a hard time getting our stubborn two-year-old to use the potty, although he has the taking off his diaper part down pact.

The purpose of a travel potty seat is to use it in public restrooms when needed. There are different types of potty training seats such as disposable, foldable, and ones with or without handles.

Each design has it’s pros and cons, but for our list we picked the best potty seat for traveling families.

A few of the drawbacks of this toddler potty training toilet is the price compared to the other potties on our list. Although it isn’t that much more expensive, there are cheaper alternatives that are just as good.

The main complaint is the splash guard being too short for little boys. Many parents complain about the height of the splash guard for boys who have not mastered aiming while going to pee-pee.

This potty chair is a 2-in-1 combo, so it can be used on the toilet when your toddler is old enough. It isn’t as sturdy on the toilet as it is on the floor, so if you have a toddler that likes to move around, you may need to keep an eye on them.

This seat is perfect for little ones starting their potty training journey. The seat is comfortable and specifically designed for little ones, so it fits their bottoms.

The Potette Plus also requires disposable bags, but they are more affordable than the other brands. It doesn’t take up much space, so it can be used at home or stored in the trunk for errands and outings.

Since the seat is larger it is more sturdy when used on a toilet seat and the legs can be used as handles.

Based on our experience with this potty training toilet, the legs can be difficult to snap in place. This isn’t ideal for a toddler that needs to go and can result in an accident.

Besides the stiff legs, there is very little to complain about this toddler travel potty chair. It is one of the must-haves when traveling with a potty training toddler.

The main complaint with this potty is how small it is. As you can imagine a portable travel potty would be small, but many complain it is too small for their toddler to use. For this reason, I do not recommend for taller kids.

Although the weight limit is listed at 60 lbs, it seems this travel potty is better for toddlers under 35 lbs.

Overall, if you are looking for the ultimate portable travel potty, this is it.

The Cool Gear Travel Potty  is the only folding potty training chair on the market. It folds up into a suitcase, making it perfect for traveling with a toddler learning how to use the potty. This is the travel potty we use with our 2-year-old.

Although this travel potty chair requires a disposable bag, you can use any gallon size bag, so we use the ones from the dollar store. It is a lot cheaper than buying disposable potty bags.

One of my favorite things about this toddler travel potty is the pockets on the sides. Our little is very active, so to get him to sit on the potty we give him books to “read”.

He likes to press the buttons and hear the sounds, so the pockets come in handy at home. Plus, they are perfect for storing extra diapers and wipes.

My major complaint about this potty chair for toddlers is the missing splash guard. Our 2-year-old like to play when he goes to pee-pee, so sometimes he makes a mess because there is nothing there.

This is a combo potty that can be placed on the toilet for older toddlers, and the additional leg adds more stability. It would be nice if this potty had handles for kids to hold onto while on the toilet.

Although it isn’t as compact as the other travel potties on the list, it is great to keep in your car or use at home. The inside is easy to clean and is even collapsible to save more space.

According to the reviews, this potty is too small for kids over 3-years-old, but that is to be expected with a portable potty chair. It may seem too small, but as long as your little one can do their business that’s all you need.

Everything You Need to Potty Train, According to Experts

If you’re just embarking on the journey that is potty training your child, you know that it’s not necessarily going to be a walk in the park. Not only is it notoriously difficult to get a toddler to do anything, there’s also no one-size-fits-all approach. According to NYC Potty Training founder Samantha Allen, the most important thing to remember is to “stay calm throughout the process and find ways to set clear expectations without making kids feel pressured or forced.” Potty-training consultant Allison Jandu says that the right method will be the one that works with your kiddo’s personality and your family’s lifestyle. As far as when to start potty training, Allen says that as long as little ones can walk to the bathroom and follow simple instructions, “they can learn to use the potty.” Jen L’Italien , a certified consultant in the Oh Crap! potty-training method , told us the sweet spot for starting to potty train usually falls between 20 and 30 months of age, but adds you’re not doomed if you start younger or older than that. Whether you adhere to a three-day method or scheduled potty sits, Allen, Jandu, L’Italien, and the five other experts we spoke to say there are things you should consider keeping on hand to make the transition from diapers to toilet go a little more smoothly. From potties, to toilet-seat inserts, to step stools, to underwear, to books, to other helpful accessories, below is everything the experts recommend for effectively potty training a child.

Best training potties

Best overall training potty.

While some experts like Allen and Laura Lynn LaPointe , a parent coach and child-behavior consultant, prefer starting toddlers on the big toilet, L’Italien thinks a small potty is useful for a couple of reasons. “Offering choice is always helpful for a toddler in any stretch of life, but certainly when you’re trying to get them to do something new,” she says. “If you can offer the options of a small potty or the toilet to a toddler, there’s at least some realm of choice.” Small potties, she adds, are “pretty much mandatory” for night training after you’ve taken the nap and night diapers away, because you’ll want a potty to put right next to a child’s bed so it’s accessible. “It makes for a much smoother process,” she promises. While L’Italien doesn’t have a strong affinity to any particular training potty, Jandu is a fan of this Learn-to-Go Potty from Summer Infant, which she trained her two kids with. “It’s lightweight and looks a lot like a regular toilet,” says Jandu. “It’s also very easy to clean and portable, so you can keep it within arm’s reach during those initial days of potty training.” Lifestyle influencer LaTisha Guster, the blogger behind BlushingBlack.com , also used a Summer Infant potty to train her two daughters. “The point was to buy a potty that did not make sounds, whistle, blow confetti, or remotely look like a toy,” she says. “I wanted something as plain and boring as possible to stay intentional about what the potty is meant for.”

Best training potty for pooping

Jandu recommends the Super Pooper Plus Potty Seat for any kids who might particularly struggle with No. 2. “This potty has a built-in footrest that helps kids get into a natural squat position, which makes it easy for them to be able to poop on the potty,” she explains. The fact that it looks like an adult toilet “makes the transition from the potty to the toilet a little bit easier when the time comes,” she adds. To further help with that transition, this potty’s seat is removable and can be put on a big toilet. While Guster eschewed a training potty that made the process more fun, Jandu told us she appreciates how this one has two buttons to engage kids in the process: One makes a realistic flushing sound and the other makes cheering noises, two things she says can make it a bit more enjoyable for little ones.

Best overall travel potty

When your toddler has grown out of diapers, you have to be extra prepared when you leave the house. “There are so many different situations you’re going to come across: long lines at restrooms, uncomfortable toilet seats, being at a public beach or in the car with nowhere else to go,” explains L’Italien. That’s where a travel potty comes in. While our best overall potty from Summer Infant is portable enough to toss in a car, if you want a dedicated travel potty, Jandu and Ellie Rountree, an engagement editor at Vox Creative, recommend OXO’s 2-in-1 Go Potty. It has foldable legs that, when engaged, make it usable as a stand-alone potty. When you fold the legs flat, it converts into a seat that can sit atop a regular toilet seat — and Jandu notes that the potty has nonslip rubber on its body “so it doesn’t slide around on the toilet.” If it’s not in use, she adds that the potty packs down to be compact enough to fit in a diaper bag or backpack. It comes with three disposable liners that have absorbent pads, and you can buy additional liners separately (if you don’t want to use whatever plastic bags you have lying around). Rountree calls it “magical,” adding: “You can just put a plastic bag in it and you’re golden. It’s saved us so many times.”

Best ecofriendly travel potty

If your child doesn’t love the feeling of sitting on a crinkly plastic bag every time they have to go — or you don’t love the idea of using disposable plastic bags to collect their pee and poop — L’Italien recommends this travel potty that has a reusable silicone liner she calls “nice and soft.” Like the OXO potty, it has foldable legs that allow you to use it as a stand-alone potty or as a seat on top of a traditional toilet. (It can also be used with plastic or disposable bags should the need arise.) “It saved my life so many times when I was going through the process of potty training,” says L’Italien.

Best travel toilet-seat insert

Those who don’t need a tool as versatile as the two travel potties above can save a couple bucks on this portable toilet-seat insert that mom Kristin Knight, a project manager at Vox Media’s Concert and programmatic platforms, recommends. The seat has suction cups on the bottom to keep it securely on a big toilet’s seat and folds flat when not in use. “It’s simple, comes with a case, and makes using public bathrooms so much easier for littles,” promises Knight.

Best toilet-seat inserts for potty training

Whether you want to start potty training on the big toilet or transition a kid to it, experts say a toilet-seat insert will make them feel comfortable and secure — and keep them from falling in — when the time comes. Jandu recommends having both a training potty and a toilet-seat insert on hand when you start potty training: “That way, kids are getting the convenience and accessibility of the small training potty, but also getting some exposure to the regular toilet,” which can help them when they have to use a bathroom outside of the home. Allen’s favorite insert is this one from BabyBjörn, which L’Italien also uses. “It’s the only one that can be adjusted to fit the toilet seat, keeping kids sturdy and safe,” Allen says, adding that it has a built-in splash guard to minimize messes.

Best toilet-seat insert (that adults can use too)

If you don’t want to fuss with installing and removing an insert in a toilet shared by kids and adults, Jandu told us about this nifty adult-size toilet seat with a miniature-size one built into it that you can simply swap an existing toilet seat with. “The toddler seat is magnetic,” she explains, “so it just kind of slips down from the cover and it makes the potty kid-size.” Making it adult-size is as easy as “flipping it back up,” she adds. “It’s nice that it’s all one piece.” Mom Melissa Young, a director of engineering on Vox Media’s revenue product team, also uses this seat, telling us it’s easy to install and that everyone in her house — “from the 2-year-old, to the 6-year-old, to adults” — uses it.

Best toilet-seat insert with a built-in step stool

Several experts told us that when kids are potty training on the big toilet, they’ll often need something to help them reach the seat. This option that Jandu told us about combines a toilet-seat insert with a step stool that has handles on the side, something she says “provides a lot of added stability for your child, which is important when they’re sitting on the toilet because they feel more secure.” In addition to its handles that “help kids climb up on their own,” the product’s seat insert is padded and its steps double as a built-in footrest that Jandu says puts little ones in “prime poop position, which is really important.”

Best step stools for potty training

The experts say that step stools not only come in handy for helping kids reach a big toilet with ease, but also for washing tiny hands afterward. If you’re looking for affordable ones that can assist with both, Allen recommends “step stools with rubber gripping on the bottom” for extra stability, a feature found in both of these inexpensive models she told us about.

To those who seek more height, Allen suggests this two-step stool that also has grippy rubber lining on its base.

If you have multiple bathrooms (or a very large one), Guster recommends this set of two step stools. Each has rubber lining its bottom and she keeps one by the toilet and the other by the sink.

Best clothes for potty training

Most of our experts recommend skipping Pull-Ups and other training pants and going straight from diapers to undies . As Allen explains, “To most kids, Pull-Ups are diapers with more fun designs, sending a mixed message: They decrease the incentive to stop playing to use the potty.” Accidents are inevitable during potty training and wearing underwear — instead of absorbent diapers or training pants — actually helps kids understand that pee should go in the potty. “Accidents are a huge learning opportunity,” LaPointe explains. “They teach kids to use the potty because they don’t like the way it feels to have wet underwear or pee running down their leg.” Guster also recommends going straight to underwear. As far as what type of undies to get, Allen recommends “regular thin-cotton pairs that allow kids to feel uncomfortable when wet.” Guster says her favorite potty-training underwear from Cat & Jack is “super cute, soft,” and affordable enough that she can buy multiple packs to prepare for those inevitable accidents.

If the idea of going from diapers to underwear scares you, consider these cloth “training pants” that function as somewhat of an in-between. They’re basically thicker underwear with an absorbent panel that can help with “dribbles,” as L’Italien puts it. She says the training pants add “a little extra insurance” in the case of accidents since their thicker composition can prevent clothes from getting soaked in pee. L’Italien also finds that these are easier for toddlers to push down than regular underwear, which typically has a tighter waist band. Jandu uses cloth training pants, too, telling us she “tends to keep them on hand for emergency situations” and suggests them to “families who want to wait and do their nighttime training at a later time.” Her preferred cloth training pants come from MooMoo Baby, which she says makes “nice, comfortable, absorbent” pairs in all kinds of prints.

Best books for potty training

Books that talk through what’s happening when kids have to go not only can help them better understand the potty-training process, but also see it as more fun, according to our experts. L’Italien told us this is one of her favorites because it leads a child through each step in the process with the help of mice holding up signs. “Giving the child some visuals can help spark conversations,” she adds.

Guster says this interactive Elmo book with flaps “was always the star of the show” when she potty trained her daughter. She advises having a mix of titles — not just books about potty training — to keep kids engaged. And another tip: Guster says to stick with board books because “they are a breeze to clean if there are any mishaps.”

For an even more interactive book starring Elmo, Jandu recommends this one with buttons that make washing, flushing, and other sound effects. “Kids tend to really like it,” she says.

Taro Gomi’s classic Everyone Poops remains a favorite among our experts, especially for kids interested in learning more about poop. “This was a huge hit in our household and helped the kids get it,” says Rountree. This writer (Lauren Ro) owns the book, too, and can attest that her 2-year-old gets a kick out of learning all the different ways animals (and humans) poop.

Leslie Patricelli’s Potty is another tried-and-true. “Kids love her books,” says Jandu — this writer’s toddler being one of them.

More potty-training accessories

Rewards for when your kiddo successfully pees or poops on the potty can help make the training process a bit less scary. According to LaPointe, they are a form of reinforcement. “In terms of behavior, a reward increases the likelihood that a kid is going to do whatever you’re training them to do both right now and in the future,” she explains. “Some kiddos don’t have that self-motivation.” Jandu also uses a rewards system in her training — specifically, this “mash-up between a sticker chart and an Advent calendar” from Lil Advents. “As kids use the potty, they earn a sticker and then get to open a little door, where there’s a really cute wooden figure inside,” she says.

If you’re going to use a travel potty, L’Italien recommends getting a wet bag to go with it. She loves this one from Marley’s Monsters: It has a cotton cover, a food-safe interior lining that prevents leaks, and room to store wipes, and it comes in a bunch of fun prints.

Young also recommends getting a wet bag. Her favorite is far more affordable and comes in a set, breaking the cost of each bag down to less than $10. She suggests “keeping one in the car” and “carrying the other with you everywhere.” The bags, she adds, are big enough to fit a towel, a change of clothes, wipes, and sanitizer inside. “You’re going to need them for accidents on the go,” she promises.

For the very curious toddler, a drink-and-wet doll could be another motivator — or just a fun toy to play with. Jandu loves these ones from Corolle, which come in boy and girl versions. “The dolls are great because they’re anatomically correct, which is hard to find,” she explains. “They’re nice for potty training because they help kids understand that water goes in my body and then it has to come out somehow.” Because water comes out of the dolls in the same place it comes out of a kid, with these, she says, “You can start preparing your child for the potty-training process by making it fun at the same time.”
