Preveza is one of those places in northwestern Greece, at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf, where you can literally just switch off and unwind. It’s a serious bucket-list adventure and is one of Greece’s gems.

With a mix of fascinating history and cosmopolitan pavement cafes, Preveza is a favorite getaway for those who love the beaches, the crystalline water and the languid way of life. Your adventure doesn’t end when you reach Preveza though because it is actually the gateway to the island of Lefkada .   Lefkada is just 14km away from Preveza, but if you travel by road, the distance is just over 25km. Many travelers hire a car at the airport and drive from Preveza to Lefkáda which is a trip of about   25 minutes. The buses take slightly longer but they leave Preveza every 3 hours.

Have some free time for an adventure? On this Lefkada cruise you will visit picturesque beaches and traditional villages with several stops for swimming and snorkeling.

Being Connected in Preveza

Most people use cell phones in Preveza, but if you don’t have a cell phone or you’ve lost yours, you’ll still find a few public phones in areas such as plazas and the airport. If you need to use one of these phones, the area code – 26820 – must first be used to make a call.

In Greece, there are a number of mobile service providers with Vodafone, Wind, and Cosmote being the more familiar providers. They all offer 4G connectivity as well as pay-as-you-talk services. You can buy a rechargeable SIM card and get your own mobile number.

Preveza – It’s Seriously more Affordable

Preveza may not be the most developed tourist town in this region such as what Parga is, but it is quickly getting a name for itself. And the good news is that it is slightly cheaper than other cities, even Lefkada.

Savour local Ouzo produced by the Roubou family

For those who have been to Greece will know that ouzo drinking is a way of life and well intertwined with Greek culture. Enjoying life in Greece is simple, but the key lies in letting go and actually going with the flow – this sometimes is the concept that people find hard to capture. But once you do – you will succumb to the beauty of enjoying the simple things – as simple as a glass of chilled ouzo.

preveza greece tourist

The history of Roubou ouzo dates back to 1949 and the humble beginnings of Georgios N. Roubos who founded this authentic distillery in the heart of Preveza (Address: Adrianoupoleos 17). Three generations later the family still produces this noble drink with the original recipe. This charming shop and distillery is definitely something you shouldn’t miss when visiting Preveza. Why Fly to Preveza? 10 Great Places to Visit

If you’ve never heard of Preveza then you might not be aware of the many great reasons to fly to this under-the-radar region in the west of Greece.

Here are 10 beautiful places to visit that are a short journey away from Preveza-Aktion International Airport .

Taverna tables in Preveza.

Let’s start with the obvious. Preveza is a small coastal city in the middle of the west coast. It sits at the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf, a large wetlands area.

Many people skip the city of Preveza and head straight for nearby beach resorts, but they’re missing out (especially if they’re foodies).

It may not have many knockout sights but Preveza is an easygoing , friendly and tidy little place with two big yachting marinas , good vibes, and a charming old quarter packed with fantastic tavernas .

Monolithi beach through the trees.

Monolithi is a vast sand/gravel beach to the north of Preveza – 22km long! Even in the height of summer you’re sure to find a spot.

It’s backed by woods and is easy to access from the main coastal road and plenty of parking spots.

Unsurprisingly, it’s popular with locals and campers. There are a few beach bars along its length including Barracuda which has a modern tiki vibe and palms.

Ancient Nikopolis

The amphitheatre at Nikopolis.

If you’re exploring the Preveza area don’t miss Ancient Nikopolis , an impressive ancient site just north of the city.

Nikopolis isn’t well-known amongst visitors (perhaps because it’s Roman rather than Greek). Built by Augustus, it was once one of the most important cities of early Christianity.

It’s a large site with excavation ongoing. It sports a particularly fine amphitheatre and a small museum which is located offsite. You’ll need a car to visit.

Parga waterfront.

The beautiful resort town of Parga is one of the main tourist draws in Epirus (the name for this western region of Greece north of Preveza).

It takes over an hour to drive here, and slightly more if you’re taking the bus, but it’s worth it for the spectacular views. Parga has a photogenic harbour nestled amongst several small bays, surrounded by lush green hills, and topped with a Venetian Castle . It’s like a bit of Corfu floated away and joined the mainland.

Ammoudia and the Acheron River

Acheron River from above.

The Acheron River is one of Epirus’ premier adventure activity destinations in Epirus. Hiking, horse-riding and kayaking are popular activities here, but many visitors choose to simply wade through the cold waters of the gorge (appealingly refreshing in the heat of summer). You can walk upriver from the springs.

It’s a popular day trip from Preveza or Parga, or you can choose to stay where the river meets the sea at Ammoudia – a small village with a big beach.

There’s lots of nature to spot too including otters and kingfishers.

It was also one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld, ushering people towards the afterlife.

If you’re a fan of active travel then you might also want to allow time for a trip inland to the mountainous area of Zagori , although it’s a longer drive.

Porto Katsiki beach on Lefkada.

The Ionian Island of Lefkada is the most well-known on this list and the main reason why people fly to Preveza-Aktion airport.

Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a causeway so it’s possible to drive across – no ferry necessary. In fact, the journey is only around 30 minutes in the car.

The island is famous for its incredible cliff beaches on the west coast. It’s green , mountainous, and relatively undeveloped, perfect for those looking to get in touch with nature . The sailing fraternity loves it too.

10 Most Beautiful Beaches on Lefkada

Porto Spilia taverna in Meganisi.

Meganisi is a small island just off the coast of Lefkada, not far from the popular port town Nydri .

If you’ve been to Lefkada a few times you might want Meganisi a go – it’s much quieter than Lefkada and even more unspoilt. The water here is a heavenly emerald colour thanks to the island’s dense vegetation.

You’ll need a car as the bus service is scant.

Read more: A Quick Day Trip to Meganisi

Kastos and Kalamos

Shady taverna in Kastos.

If whilst on Meganisi you develop a thing for quiet and lesser-visited Greek Islands then you might want to check out twin islands Kalamos and Kastos . They are also located in the bay between Lefkada and the main, but a little further away than Meganisi.

However you’ll have to take the ferry from Mytikas on the mainland rather than Lefkada, so you definitely need a car for this one (although you can briefly visit both on the MS Christina boat trip ).

Both islands have small port towns and not much else beyond incredible beaches and bays to discover by boat.

Bella Vraka beach in Syvota.

Syvota is an area of stunning natural beauty north of Parga. It’s opposite the southern tip of Corfu but the most straightforward way to get there from abroad is to drive from Preveza Airport (1 hour 30 minutes).

It has several bays, islets, and beautiful beaches – including Bella Vraka, pictured above.

There are numerous upmarket hotels and villas here making the most of the scenery.

Fishing boats in Nafpaktos harbour.

The charming coastal town of Nafpaktos isn’t traditionally a destination for those flying into Preveza but is worth a trip if you fancy a change from Parga and Lefkada. It’s a very popular location with the Greeks and played an important role in the Greek War of Independence.

Nafpaktos has a pretty semi-circular Venetian harbour almost entirely enclosed by fortifications. Red-tiled roofs seem to cascade down from the castle-topped hill behind. Traditional tavernas line the waterfront.

If Nafpaktos was on an island it would be jam-packed but somehow it has flown under the international tourist radar.

Located down in the Gulf of Patras , it’s a 2-hour drive from the airport and is a good pitstop for a road trip if you want to visit Delphi or Olympia.

EXPERIENCES

Preveza: between the mountain and the sea, on the gorgeous epirotic “riviera”.

Preveza, the place where the Ionian sea, the Amvrakikos gulf and the Epirotic inland meet, exudes authenticity and beauty

BY ARTEMIS TZITZI

Translated by avgi daferera, published 05 march 2022, photo: nikos kokkas.

Great beaches, a lovely historic centre, great food with fresh fish and seafood, great prices for a wide range of accommodation options, among which the number of luxury hotels is steadily increasing. Just the above would be enough to make Preveza a top holiday destination, but the town is generous and has more to offer. It’s the where the unique Epirotic coastline is linked to island destinations like Lefkada and Paxi, but also the starting point or a stop for sailing holidays on the calm Ionian sea.

Its heart beats in the historic centre with the intricate network of narrow alleys, the countless ouzo taverns, the bars, the cafés and the restaurants. You’ll instantly fall for the irresistible smells of the fresh fish, the seafood, the famous Amvrakikos shrimp grilled everywhere, and the anise-y fragrance of ouzo in the air.

Go for relaxed walks among the imposing neoclassical buildings and the scenic folk architecture houses beneath the Venetian clock tower. The Venetian clock tower with the sundial was built in 1752 but the “hat” on top and the bell tower of the Agios Charalambos church were added later.

When you’re in Preveza, you must absolutely visit the church of Agios Charalambos , built in the 18 th century. The interior decoration with the lovely paintings influenced by Venetian painting, the carved wooden, gold coated altar, and the 18 th century icons, great examples of the Ionian Islands School, is very impressive.

The church of Agios Athanasios , built during the Venetian rule, also has amazing paintings, and it one of the oldest churches in town. It has stunning frescoes dating back to 1780, icons of the Ionian Islands School, and an incredibly impressive ceiling decorated with paintings.

As you continue your exploration of the historic centre, you’re bound to come across the bust of poet Kostas Karyotakis , who committed suicide, located in the small Dardanelia square. A major contemporary poet, tormented by syphilis, he shot himself, aged only 32 years old. He didn’t get to see his work being translated in over 30 languages. Near the square, on the most picturesque alley of the centre, Saitan Pazar, you’ll find his house.

According to legend the name of this lovely colourful downhill alley with the jasmine and bougainvillea trees originated in the Ottoman times – it derives from şeytan which means Satan in Turkish. Legend has it that a very harsh Turkish commander who had gone to collect taxes, fell off his horse to the stone ground that had been covered in soap by the residents, and as he fell he yelled şeytan Pazar, that is to say Satan’s bazar .

With the passage of time, small shops, printer’s, barbers, taverns, and music coffee shops opened on the street and the tradition is preserve today, as you can eat, drink and have fun in one of the many beautiful modern establishments.

The history of Preveza was also written by its residents’ trades and businesses, some of which have been around for many decades. For example, you can’t come to town and not visit OUZO ROUMPOU on Andrianoupoleos street, in the centre. It’s one of the oldest distilleries in Greece that has been working without stop since 1949. Their products: of course, ouzo – the main spirit they drink in Preveza, with tsipouro (traditional pomace raki) coming second by far –, a lovely cinnamon liquor that comes from distilling cinnamon, a kind of brandy with subtle vanilla aromas etc. Neat, old-fashioned window displays with countless bottles, wooden floors, lace doilies, and, at the back of the store, hidden, the old alembic.

You must also make a stop at the age-old barbershop of Timoleon Veskas on Kontou Hristou street (Saitan Pazar). The window has a wooden frame painted a retro green-blue shade, inside you’ll see the classic barber’s chair, and an equally old-fashioned brown small sofa for the customers to sit on in the waiting area. The shop has been open since 1920, going from Timoleon Veskas’ father’s hands into the hands of another barber in 1946, and then into his hands in 1952, when he learned the trade. Today he also gives modern cuts and male visitors might want to be able to say they’ve had a haircut at the oldest barbershop in Greece.

Raptis Dimitrios’ restaurant /Photo: Nikos Kokkas

Outside the limits of the historic centre, the Raptis Dimitrios restaurant on 51 Panagi Tsaldari street is a cook shop – patsatsidiko (a place that serves patsas – Greek tripe soup) that’s been open since 1933. The owner-cook, Dimitris Raptis, is a very tall biker who marvellously cooks all the traditional Greek dishes and many soups: patsas, meat soup, bean soup, yuvarlakia (Greek meatball soup) etc. The best soup among them is the one he makes with the cow head and feet. It’s a unique recipe, a balm for the stomach, a caress to the palate.

And since you’re already outside the historic centre, the road will lead you to the central square with the imposing statue of Odysseas Androutsos, the chieftain who played a crucial role in the end of the Siege of Missolonghi by Omer Vrioni in 1822, and who defeated the troops of Dramalis, and who was from Preveza. His fate was similar to many of the great Greeks: he was either killed by the government of the post-revolution Greece, or he died in prison in Preveza.

The Amvrakikos gulf /Photo: Nikos Kokkas

The Amvrakikos gulf is a sight in its own right, as it almost forms a lagoon within the Ionian sea with hundreds of species of flora and fauna, including dolphins, as well as monuments, towns and villages on its banks. It’s a stunning national park, a source of fresh fish and of the famous Amvrakikos shrimp . You can go on a mini sailboat cruise, starting from the port. From the village Agios Thomas, 5 km from town, you’ll get a great view of the whole Amvrakikos gulf and Preveza.

The Preveza marina/Photo: Nikos Kokkas

Heading down towards the sea, you can walk on the pedestrian seaside promenade, next to the new Preveza marina with the sailboats, for a romantic walk. Two years ago, there was nothing in the location where the Preveza marina was built, and when night fell, everything was covered in darkness. The marina offers safe mooring and every amenity and service for the boats, including a restaurant, a café as well as organised trips to the many sights in the area.

The marina first opened in 2020, right before the lockdown, but as Mr Giannis Tefas, the owner of the construction company “Tefa Group’ explains, despite the severe decrease in tourism, the Preveza marina has managed to get high numbers of visitors, both from the wider Epirus area and from the rest of Greece and the Balkans, as it is an area that is in the process of dynamic development. The location of Preveza between the gorgeous Epirotic riviera, Paxi, and Lefkada has created a whole league of sailing boat companies in town, for anyone who wants to spend their holidays in a more adventurous and independent way. The Preveza marina is the starting point as well as stop for wealthy boat owners who are cruising the calm Ionian sea.

What are the expectations going forth? Mr Tefas is optimistic: “We think that the sea tourism season can last eight months – at the moment it lasts six months – and this will influence the town’s land tourism as well, that at the moment lasts barely three months.”  The cruising sector has also developed lately, and Preveza businesspeople are relying on the many archaeological sites and the great food to attract a particular audience, like the so-called “silver tourism”, that is the older public.

The fact that you can go directly from the airport of a European city to the beach or get on a sailboat has strengthened the town’s tourist profile, and as a result the number of visitors has increased. The increase of charter flights into Aktion airport has also played a role in this – perhaps due to the airport of Corfu reaching its capacity. This year they are building a second runway, something that will support tourism further, while there are already direct flights to/from Milan, Paris, London .

The best of the best all year round

The archaeological site of Nikopolis/Photo: Nikos Kokkas

The archaeological site of Nikopolis is very close to town. It’s a huge space with impressive walls – the main gate has been reconstructed – while the marvellous theatre is also being reconstructed. You need to use your imagination to see how the public buildings, spread in the valley, looked like: the theatre, the conservatory, the early Christian churches. Nikopolis was built by the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus to commemorate his victory over Antony and Cleopatra in the battle of Actium in 31 BC.

The archaeological museum of Nikopolis (tel.: 0030 2682 041336) is located near the site and houses findings from the majestic Roman Nikopolis, as well as from Nikopolis of the early Byzantine times. Hall B, where scenes of everyday life of the citizens of Nikopolis are displayed, in a sort of “walk” from the port to the workshops, houses and cemeteries of town, is very touching and interesting.

The Pantokratoras castle, also known as Uc Kale , has an amazing view and is located very close to the beach Kiani Akti . The castle is part of the town fortress built by Ali Pasha in the early 19 th century, while in the 1940s it was used as a prison by the Greek state. It has high perimeter walls, shaped as a pentagon, with a sea bastion and a large internal yard.

Visiting the Nekromanteion of Acheron (tel.: 0030 26840 41206 – 0030 26820 89890) in the village Mesopotamos, on top of hill where the, now dried, lake Acherousia used to be, is a unique experience. The basement (with no acoustics) where the visitors went, after cleanses and sacrifices, to communicate with the dead is quite something. A bit further down, at the village Amoudia, at the mouth of river Acheron, you can take a boat on the river, recreating the route ancient visitors took.

The Monument of Zalongo, a monumental sculpture by George Zongolopoulos, is located 29 km from Preveza, near Souli, on the top of Mount Zalongo at 786 m altitude, to honour the women of Souli who, trapped there, in December 1803, fell off the cliff with their children, so as to avoid capture by the army of Ali Pasha. Near Filippiada, the stunning lake Ziros , surrounded by the forest, creates an idyllic serene landscape where you can enjoy the peace, go hiking, cycling and, in the summer, canoeing. Not far from the lake, the Agios Varnavas’ forest is another spot of peace and quiet. Birds chirping, plane trees, white poplars, alders and on a clearing, the deserted church of Agios Varnavas that was first built in 1149, was destroyed, and then rebuilt.

With endless sapphire beaches, the lacy coastline of Preveza becomes everyone’s paradise, no matter what sea they dream of. Monolithi with its aesthetic forest , Kanali, Kastrosykia, all of them organised, the cosmopolitan Mytikas , Kiani Akti with the shallow waters, Artolithia with the impressive waters, the bays of Ligia, Vrahos, Loutsa, the bays Alonaki and Odysseus’ Ormos, even within the town, just a stone’s throw from the centre.

Preveza City – Between Sea and Gulf with Rare Fauna

The true face of Preveza is coloured by its residents, who are warm, welcoming people willing to open their homes and their hearts, to show each traveler their town as only they know it. It is a town with such contradictory features, like the waters surrounding it.

Where is Preveza City?

Map of preveza city in epirus, how to get to preveza greece, what to see in preveza greece, ancient nikopolis, preveza beach guide, things to do in preveza.

Preveza City port in summer, Greece

On one side the town touches the deep, restless and dangerous waters of the Ionian Sea and on the other the quiet, shallow waters of the Ambracian Gulf, full of rare examples of living species. Preveza is a retreat and simultaneously a base for feasting, with cobbled streets conveying everything and performing a distinctive charm, able to seduce even the most demanding traveler.

Preveza, Greece - from above

Preveza is a city located on the northern peninsula at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf. It is the capital of the regional unit by the same name, which again is part of the region of Epirus. The Aktio-Preveza Tunnel – the first and so far only undersea tunnel in Greece – was completed in 2002. It connects Preveza in the north to Aktio in south of the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf. Just 7 km north of Preveza City lie the ruins of the ancient city of Nicopolis.

map of preveza ionian sea greece

The town of Preveza is linked with direct buses (KTEL) to other Greek cities and towns such as Igoumenitsa and Athens. There are also non-direct connections to Thessaloniki and Ioannina, although during July and August there is a daily direct bus connection to Ioannina.

Flights to Preveza The airport at Aktio is located next to Preveza City with seasonal direct flights to/from Athens and Thessaloniki and other domestic destinations. Charter flights are served from abroad, at Ioannina with regular flights to and from Athens, and at Corfu (car-ferry from Igoumenitsa) with direct flights to and from Athens, Thessaloniki, European destinations and the Ionian Islands.

The fortress of Pantokrator , Ali Pasha period (1810), a short distance from Preveza, was built in by Ali Pasha from drawings by French engineer Yadocourt. It has pentagon shaped high walls, a rampart on the waterfront, moat without water on the north side and another ditch with water in the southern part of the castle. Today it hosts various cultural events.

Fortress of St. Andreas , Venetian (1701–1717) and Ottoman period (1810) The castle of St. Andrew (Its Kale) is located to the north of Preveza city at the sea. It was built by the Ottomans  and was later restored by the Venetians. Ali Pasha reinforced the fort in the early 19th century and built a perimeter wall with a moat and three gates. The castle is still preserved and quite impressive with its sloping walls and exquisite geometry of angular bastions.

Ottomanian castle "Five Wells" in Preveza

The fortress of St. George (Yeni Kale), in the southernmost part of the old town of Preveza was built by Ali Pasha in the early 19th century, the same period as the encirclement, perimeter, with the city moat. It consists of a sloping peripheral wall surrounding the interior courtyard. The perimeter wall was strengthened then with bastions on the north and on the south side is the entrance to the vagina Ambracian.

Ancient Nikopolis - Preveza

From 1998 to 2006 a new archaeological museum was built 5 km North of Preveza. In July 2009, the new Archaeological museum of Nicopolis was opened to public http://www.nicopolismuseum.gr

Ancient Kassope – 18 km from Nikopolis on the road to Igoumenitsa you will find the remains of ancient Kassope. From here you can also continue to the Nekromanteion of Ephyra, near Mesopotamos, and the seaside resort of Parga. Kassope is one of the best preserved ancient Greek cities. It was the chief settlement of the Kassopaii, a Thesprotian tribe that broke away from the rest of the Thesprotians around 400 B.C. and formed an independent state. The size of the city, the agora, two theatres and prytaneion unearthed by archeologists all indicate that it was the tribe’s cultural center. Recent excavations also show that the site was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age. The hill of Zalongo rises to the east of the site. In 1802 the women of Souli became immortal when they danced their way over its cliffs rather than allow themselves to fall into the hands of the Turks. Towering at the edge of this historic rock is a colossal stone sculpture of the dancing women by George Zongolopoulos (1954) which commemorates their heroism. Below the hill is the 18th century Zalongo Monastery with a section of ancient polygonal wall a bit further to the west.South of this wall are the foundations of a peripteral fourth century B.C. temple, possibly dedicated to Aphrodite.

Traveling by kayak on the crystalline waters on the legendary Acheron River has been done for over two millennia, believed by the ancient Greeks to be the river which the souls of the dead were obliged to pass in order to reach the underworld. Thousands of travelers would make a pilgrimage to visit the oracle who could supposedly communicate with the dead. All of this took place under the surface of an ancient temple complex which was built only few metres from the riverbank. Acheron Kayak

No place is this more apparent than in Preveza, the beautiful city in the Epirus region of Northern Greece (also the capital of the region that goes by the same name.) Situated on the north cape of the Amvrakikos Gulf,  Preveza offers the best of what an authentic experience in Greece should feel like.

Preveza Town

The Town of Preveza

The city’s neoclassical buildings provide the perfect backdrop for idyllic walks. exploration reveals an abundance of ouzeries and lively spots where locals flock in the spring and summer months. a city surrounded by picturesque villages, preveza is popular with both nature lovers and those mesmerized by the turquoise waters of the ionian sea. the unique location offers easy access to surrounding forests, rivers, hiking trails, beaches, islands, flower filled gardens, olive groves and archaeological ruins. , the laid back atmosphere is what this city is known for, providing the relaxation that visitors crave while also offering stunning beaches, some only accessed via boat or off-road vehicle., one of must see attractions in preveza is the castle of pantokratoras. the most popular of three castles in preveza, it is ideally located at the south end of the old city, near kyani akti beach. photographers often flock to the location to capture the colors of this magnificent castle at dusk..

Beautiful Beaches

Stunning beaches, and expansive coastlines are just two of the reasons why preveza and the surrounding coastal cities have become popular, of late., with long, wide stretches of sand, turquoise waters with varying shades of blue, one can visit either a lively, social beach or water aficionados can charter a yacht to discover hidden coves along the coast. ag sostis is one of those difficult to reach beaches that locals love for it’s pristine coastlines. insider tip: greeks love to share their knowledge of beautiful beaches so ask a local about their favorite swimming spot, you’ll always get the best recommendation that way. .

Another stunning beach you won’t want to miss is Monolithi beach which extends several kilometers along the peaceful beauty of forest, gorgeous deep waters with large waves in the afternoon giving an ocean experience. Although the beach is expansive and can feel isolated (in sections) there are showers, toilets and easily accessible refreshment booths for your convenience.

Two more beaches to consider, Alonaki, with its grandiose rocky setting and small island that you can swim to, and Ormos tou Odyssea the iconic cove with golden, fine sand and shallow waters.

Beyond beaches, no trip to greece would be complete without visiting archaeological ruins. in this case, the ancient city of nicopolis awaits. nature lovers will want to get a rental car to travel about 8 km outside of preveza to the ancient city of nicopolis , in greek the name means “city of victory” and also visit the on-site museum which seeks to connect the museum to both the routes’ network of the archaeological site of nicopolis and the daily cultural life of the city and the modern cultural activities., nature lovers will want to save time for a day trip (or maybe two days) to visit the acheron river which flows into the ionian sea after a 64 kilometer trek. the river helps to create a wide range of ecosystems which are home to and sustain many species of plants and animals. a day trip would likely consist of horseback riding in the shallow waters or even kayaking down the picturesque canyons., ammoudia, is a beautiful fishing village on the northwest coast of greece, enjoying the waves of ionian sea at the estuaries of acheron river..

Parga: Greece’s answer to the Amalfi Coast

Farther north, lies a city on the ionian coast that is often compared to italy’s amalfi coast. when visitors think about a preveza coastal city, they more than likely have seen a colorful photo of parga., parga continues to attract discerning travelers who appreciate the design aesthetic of this small gem. the houses are built using the architectural design of the venetians (colorful buildings with ceramic tile roofs.), the mostly summer destination has become extremely popular for it’s abundance of beaches, and rugged coastline’s that are a departure from the stark cycladic islands that most visitors associate with greece., parga is a paradise for beach lovers and has a distinctly, island feel even though it is a coastal (mainland) city. in addition to the beaches there is the most visited attraction, in the city, the venetian castle. hikers will appreciate the panoramic views, at the castle, as well as the challenging trails through the olive groves taking you from the city center to the castle and those stunning views..

Another popular site is the small island (in the picture above) named Panagias Island ( translation: the small island of the Virgin Mary.) It can be accessed by swimming from the town’s main beach, or via water taxi. This location is also very popular spot for weddings (a gorgeous spot so completely understandable.)

How to get around, rent a car for a couple of days to access those hard to reach beaches, the rivers and all of the small surrounding villages hidden in the forests. soak up the culture and immerse yourself in the local life., if renting a car feels too complicated, all of the beaches can be reached via water taxi and those can be picked up at the port. you may also want to reach out to your hotel proprietors to arrange day trips (if you feel like you want something a bit more structured.), the preveza prefecture has something for every type of visitor. an abundance of culture, wonderful food, more beaches than you’ll be able to visit and best of all, the friendly faces of the locals ready to warmly welcome you to their charming little town..

preveza town epir (116)

As we have already mentioned, Preveza is at the perfect location for visiting beautiful beaches, cities and cultural and historical sights in the region. First of all, Lefkada and it’s capital Lefkas are located only half an hour from Preveza. It is a place inherently interesting and worth visiting, so we recommend you to go in the evening and walk along the sea and marina, but also along interesting and colorful pedestrian zone. If you go to the west part of the island, you will immediately find Agios Ioannis beach , a real paradise for surfers where you can enjoy observing the skills of surfers coming here from all over the world. Proceed further and you will come across the large sanctuary, famous monastery of Panagia Faneromeni , from whose fantastic landscaped courtyard extends the view to the beach of Agios Ioannis, Lefkas and sea. From this point to the west comes the most beautiful beaches of Lefkada, Pefkoulia , famous Kathisma , Milos, Avali, Kavalikefta together with turquoise sea we used to see on postcards from Lefkada. A cute small town Agios Nikitas , the most popular resort on the west coast is also there. You can reach Lefkas from Preveza with the organized cruises that can bring you to the most famous beaches of this beautiful island in just one day. On the other hand, if you go to Preveza from Parga , first you will reach 13km long beach. The beginning of the beach, from the Preveza side, is called Mitikas, and is located at the foothill of the city. This part of the beach is rich in natural shade provided by impressive eucalyptus trees. Then follows the most famous 6km long part of the beach called Monolithi. This sandy beach is known for its popular bars decorated in a contemporary way, with a large number of chairs and good music. Bars are popular among the youth, but between them there is enough space for all those who come with their own equipment. The next place is Kanali and Kastrosikia beach . The entire beach is covered with sand while inside the sea are both rocks and sand. There are parts of the beach used by nudists. Parasols and sun beds are at disposal with an ordered drink and sunsets are unforgettable. The best is to estimate which part of the beach you like the most. Here you can choose whether to be in the crowd at a popular bar or to isolate yourself because there is enough space to do so. If you continue towards Parga, you can explore and disclose wild coves or less famous beaches which are a lot of. We recommend you to stop at the beach Vrachos-Loutsa , which is considered by many people as one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. It is the beach with fine sand which is rare at Ionian coast. The beach is 3km long and up to 50m wide. In some parts there is a shallow, but the best about this beach is that it is never crowded so you can relax and enjoy. The beach is well organized, especially for contemporary caffe-bars’ lovers, with sun loungers and parasols. Vrachos-Loutsa is 35km away from Preveza. Fanariou Alonaki beach , located next to beautiful emerald green sea, is a small jewel of this region placed just 40km from Preveza. In the hinterland of the beach is a forest from where the trees hang over the beach. Regarding facilities, beach has only a small canteen but a lot of beauty. Even before we have recommended that you, if you love nature, when coming from Preveza, turn left from the highway 6 at coordinates 39.199247, 20.52074. You should expect dirty road here, but comfortable ride through the forest and possibility to take a break on several vantage points. Ammoudia beach is around 45km from Preveza. This wide and long sandy beach is perfect for families with children because of the shallow water. Beach has a natural shade and is not crowded. Beside is famous delta of the river Acheron. This beach you can also visit while visiting Acheron and Nekromantion, about what we will write later. Parga is situated 65km from Preveza. Yes, it is worth a visit in the afternoon hours to climb to the fortress and enjoy the city view, beaches and the sea, small island with a chapel across the street… And then in the evening to walk the streets of this very picturesque town. Visit to Parga could be combined with swimming on the beautiful beaches around Parga: Lichnos if you want a peaceful environment, and Valtos beach if you are in love with more “popular” beaches. As already mentioned, Preveza has been the center of many historical events throughout history because of its position, which is why today is a region with a large number of archaeological site and monuments of the past. Preveza has five fortresses and four museums. Just 5km from the city are the remains of the famous ancient city of Nikopolis which was built in honor of Octavian’s victory over the combined forces of Marcus Aurelius and Cleopatra. This city used to have 30.000 inhabitants, and its name means “city of victory”. One of the museums was dedicated to this city, but we encourage you to go and visit the city before the museum. Preveza witnessed another great historical naval battle when the Ottoman fleet, led by the Turkish admiral Barbarossa, defeated the united Christian Navy. The battle took place in the 16th century, and divers still explore the seabed due to this event. The famous river Acheron (44km from Preveza) is named after the god Acheron, which in Greek mythology is known as the god who keeps the underworld river. According to tradition, the souls of river Acheron are souls of the dead travelling to the other side, to the god of the underworld, Hades. The goddess Thetis bathed her son Achilles in this river by holding the infant by his heel, after what he became immortal. Today the river Acheron is an attraction for tourists, where they can try out rafting, horseback riding, sport fishing, but most of all enjoy the beautiful nature. The river itself has a beautiful color, light blue, clean and clear water, it is very gentle and perfect for kayaking adventure. Kayaking can be enjoyed by all ages because it is completely safe. You can also bring your camera with you. By going down the riverbed of the peaceful river, you will see beavers, otters, water turtles, herons, and you can take a swim although the water is very cold. Along the river there are taverns, restaurants and cafes. You can organize a trip to the river by yourself, or pay to some of the local agencies. In our opinion, it is good to combine going to the Ammoudia beach by car, where you can rent kayak and go with your guide to the spring, from where you can easily get down the river to the beach again and back to your car. By visiting this river make sure to visit the Nekromanteion too, an ancient shrine dedicated to the god of the underworld, Hades. It has been used for communication with a dead souls. A visit to the crypt and hallways that led to an underground world can be exciting, especially if you immerse yourself in surrender. Zalongo is a mountain that belongs to Cassope mountain range famous for Zalongo monument. At this point, a monument was built to women and children who have chosen to die to avoid falling into the hands of Turks. They carried out the deadly dance in the early nineteenth century, and now impressive monument is a place visited by a thousands of tourists during a year. You can reach the monument by car through a winding road and interesting traditional Greek villages, after which you will come to St. Demetrius Monastery, which you can also visit. You can park your car next to the monastery and continue the way to monument by foot, passing 400 steps. The monument is 13 meters high. From this place you can enjoy the great view of the sea and Lefkada, Preveza and Parga, and on a clear day also Ithaca, Kefalonia, Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos. And for the end we left something you absolutely must do while in Preveza, a cruise to magnificent Gulf of Amvrakikos. You can book a cruise at the coast of Preveza, in the harbor, from captain Vasilisa. The boat is small and can accommodate up to 8 people, but the experience is something that you will remember for a lifetime. In short we will write some of the characteristics of the bay, and the most interesting stories and descriptions you can hear only from the captain himself, who speaks English perfectly. The bay is considered a miniature Mediterranean. Formed back in the Ice Age, about 10.000 years ago, and according to a legend, Alexander The Great cut and created a water surface with an extremely rare biodiversity. Amvrakikos Bay is one of 11 wetlands in Greece which has received the label “of international importance” and is protected by international treaty RAMSAR. This bay is considered to be one of the most important protected areas of Natura 2000 network due to the presence of rare and endangered species and because of its unique landscapes and habitats. Amvrakikos is very complex ecosystem formed at the delta of two rivers Louros and Arachtos. In its composition has the largest swamp in Greece (Rodia) and over twenty lagoons. Due to its geographical position the Bay is located in one of the most important routes for European migratory birds. They use it to rest, feed and as a breeding ground. Islands in the lagoons serve as a habitat for some of the rarest birds threatened with extinction. One of them is Dalmatian pelican, some species of herons, eagles, cormorants, ducks and they nest in large reeds and flooded meadows Amvrakikos Gulf. The waters of the Gulf serve as a valuable biotope for dolphins, seals and endangered Caretta Caretta turtles. All in all Amvrakikos Bay is a paradise for nature lovers, birds and water animals. In the bay you can see 300 different species of birds of which 106 are migratory and 6 are globally threatened species. It may happen that you encounter water buffalo. In the aforementioned cruise through this water national park you will come to the place considered as a dolphin habitat where you can enjoy in observing these amazing species for hours. You can feed them, take pictures and easily enjoy their games, swimming and jumping. You can also see baby dolphins. Sometimes the boat stay here for a couple of hours. Caretta Caretta turtles cannot always be seen, but often yes. After a few hours filled with excitement and joy of both adults and children go to a small beach where you can swim and have lunch in the tavern or do snorkeling along the rocks on the coast. If you wish, you can go on a cruise at sunset, which is also interesting. There is a food and drink on the boat. Many tourists go to this trip twice during the holiday. To all who embark this adventure trip it remains as the best possible memory. To conclude, we can say that Preveza, as less developed tourist town, is ideal for a quiet holiday, and the beaches around Preveza, as less visited, perfect for seclusion and enjoying the sea, a gentle breeze, sunsets. The dense forests along the beaches and bays offer natural shade. Beaches have a turquoise sea, but many have emerald green sea because of the lush vegetation in the hinterland. Preveza is perfect for an eventful holiday as it has a promenade and harbor, great stocked supermarkets, many boutiques for shopping, but also a great selection of restaurants, bars, taverns, confectioneries, bakeries… The nightlife is also rich and Parga and offer clubs, discotheques, urban bars… On the other hand, if you prefer an active holiday, Preveza offers really such a great choice that one holiday cannot be enough to visit all natural and historical attractions. In addition to all that we have previously mentioned, we must add that in Preveza, near a small fortress Pantokrator which overlooks the Amvrakikos Gulf, ancient city Kassopi, you can visit the Museum of Art and Science of Epirus. Besides the beaches described above, you can also visit Alonaki, located 4km from Preveza and Artholithia beach, but also to explore the very jagged coast of the whole region of Preveza. Another reason to have your holiday in Preveza or its surroundings are prices that are still lower than in other resorts of the northwestern Greece.

Preveza is a coastal prefecture in northwestern Greece that's full of splendor, bordering the Ionian Sea and the Ambracian Gulf. It covers an area of 1,036 square kilometers and has a population of about 57,000 people. The region is home to diverse natural habitats, such as wetlands, forests, mountains, islands and beaches. It has four protected areas under the Natura 2000 network, which aim to conserve the biodiversity and ecosystems of the region. It is worth noting that Preveza hosts a rich variety of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species, such as the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), the brown bear (Ursus arctos) and the orchid Ophrys prevezana, which is endemic to Preveza and named after it.

Equally impressive, Preveza has a long and fascinating history, dating back to ancient times. It was the site of important battles, such as the naval battle of Actium in 31 BC, where Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra and became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. The battle is commemorated by a monument called the Nicopolis Actia. Overall, Preveza preserves its cultural heritage through its monuments, museums, festivals and traditions. Some of the highlights are the ancient city of Nicopolis, which was founded by Octavian after his victory at Actium; the castle of Pantokrator, which was built by Ottoman ruler Ali Pasha in the 19th century; the archaeological museum of Nikopolis, which displays artifacts from various periods; and the sardine festival, which celebrates the local cuisine and music every August.

If you love nature, adventure and culture, you will be thrilled by the ecotourism activities that you can enjoy in the region of Preveza. Here are ten specific ecotourism activities that we suggest:

Greece island hopping: A guide to the best routes and how to explore Greek culture

Greece ’s wide scattering of differently sized, culturally distinct islands makes it a dream for a multi-stop trip. Come May and June , ferry services ramp up for summer, with hops between different islands taking as little as 20 minutes.

Some islands are vast and ripe for exploring, requiring a taxi, hire car or moped to get across their width. In others, you’ll simply find a bijou port and a forested interior, fringed by rocky or sandy coves you can stroll to. Wherever you go, you’ll find waterfront tavernas, petite churches, hushed beaches and sunkissed portside bars. Plus, there are Greek Isles hotels that will seriously make you want to linger.

But where to start? Greece’s ferry networks are complex, with different services available at different times of year; it’s best to use a journey planner such as Ferryhopper.com to check ahead for timings and operators. Services can run late, so leave plenty of time between your last ferry and your flight home – an easy (and stressful!) first-time mistake to make.

Best for first timers: The Argo-Saronics

Route: athens-poros-hydra-spetses.

Close to the capital of Athens and its port, Piraeus, these islands huddled around the Greek mainland are fab for a first go if you’re not sure island hopping is for you. Spend a few cultured nights in the capital, then hop on the ferry to nearby Poros, just over an hour away: here you’ll find a smart little red-roofed port topped with a clock tower and a handful of hotels and apartments. Dine by the waterfront, then go off in search of the emerald waters at Love Bay.

Just 35 minutes’ boat-ride from here is Hydra, a tiny but glamorous speck which has attracted artists, musicians and photographers since the Sixties. Bask in its romantic port and sunset bars, then walk the coast road to find secret pebble bays, or take a boat trip to its quietest corners.

Next up is Spetses, 40 minutes away – the mellow, car-free island where recent film The Lost Daughter was shot. Seek out its Cave of Bekiris, tiny whitewashed churches and one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece; then take the 2hr 50min catamaran all the way back to Piraeus for a flight out of Athens.

These undiscovered islands don’t get as much footfall as the Cyclades (below) so you can go in peak July and not feel too much of a crush. However, September is a delightful, quieter time to visit.

Where to stay

In Athens, historic Asomaton is walking distance from the sights.

On Poros, try the mellow Saga Hotel for a bougainvillea-draped pool.

On Hydra, guesthouse Hydra Icons has 360-degree views from its rooftop.

On Spetses, Niriides Guesthouse is a chic three-star with a family-run feel.

For classic looks: The Cyclades

Route: santorini-milos-sifnos-serifos-paros-mykonos.

There are two key ingredients for a successful island-hopping adventure: cheap and plentiful flights into and out of your start and end point, and plenty of ferry links in between. In the Cyclades, where the houses are tiny and whitewashed and the cliffs and bays dramatic and undeveloped, there are UK flights to both Mykonos and Santorini – so compare prices and consider flying into one and out of the other. You could start on Santorini for its jaw-dropping cliffside views, killer sunsets and upmarket dinners, taking the two-hour Seajets ferry on to Milos after two or three days.

Klima’s brightly painted fisherman’s houses are the top sight here, but head to lunar-like Sarakiniko Beach, too (this island is beach central) and take a boat to the Caves of Milos. Next up is Sifnos, 40 minutes away, where you’re spoilt for pretty whitewashed villages to potter around (don’t miss Chrissopigi Monastery); then to Serifos, 20 minutes on, an unspoiled spot with a particularly beautiful Chora, or port town. You’ve just got time for a stop on Paros (a 90-minute service that runs every few days) – which has a slightly more modern feel and a bit of nightlife – before a 40-minute boat on to Mykonos, for ample flights home.

Best time to go

These islands fill up during July and August, so go in early June or mid-September for the best combo of weather and quiet-ish landscapes.

On Santorini, the delightful Vasilicos guesthouse is family-run and tailored to you.

On Milos, Milos Summer Time is all cerulean-painted shutters and sea views; on Sifnos, the Sigma Residences are the trendy pad du jour.

On Serifos, the team at stylish Nostos Boutique Hotel will help you get out and explore

On Paros, affordable Ayeri Hotel is slightly out of the port crush.

On Mykonos, Marisso Hotel is a chilled overnight before a flight home.

For unspoiled nature: The Ionians

Route: lefkada-kefalonia-ithaca-kefalonia-zakynthos.

Substantially larger, with more towns and trails to dig into, these forested isles are some of the nearest to the UK. Flights into Preveza (connected to Lefkada island), Kefalonia and Zakynthos give you flexibility on route and order. We’d suggest flying into Preveza for the first few nights on Lefkada, staying in relaxed Nidri or Vasiliki for boat trips out to its mind-blowingly beautiful beaches. From Vasiliki you can take the West Ferry to Fiskardo on Kefalonia’s north coast (1hr 45m), then spend up to a week seeing undeveloped beaches, pine forests and gorgeous Venetian towns on this dazzling island.

Heading east to Sami port, take the 20-minute boat on to Ithaca, a petite, forgotten-feeling speck of gorgeous wild beaches, tiny port towns and chic guesthouses. From here, you could nip back to Kefalonia and fly home; or voyage 3hr 45m onward to Zakynthos, home to some of the Ionians’ most beautiful beaches. Take in its poster-child “Shipwreck Beach”, Navagio, snorkel with loggerhead turtles or take boats to vivid caves before flying home.

Ferries run between May and September, so go May to early June or September for the best chance of quieter bays and plenty of ferry seats.

On Lefkada, chilled out apartments like Santa Emelia cost from as little as £75 a night.

On Kefalonia, Anthi’s Beach Apartments fit in with the tranquil vibe of Fiskardo.

Further south on Kefalonia, southerly F Zeen is a fitness-focused splurge.

On Ithaca, Korina Gallery Hotel is near the restaurants and boats of Vathy harbour.

On Zakynthos, try the chic Tsamis Zante Suites.
