Port of Southampton

A Guide to Southampton Cruise Port

Big cruise ship in Port of Southampton

Numerous cruises depart the city every year and just as many ships visit as part of a British Isles cruise itinerary.

Sailing UK waters is hugely popular with cruisers from across the globe and ship choice is just as varied.

The port is synonymous as being the starting point of Titanic’s maiden voyage, she left from Berth 44, Ocean Dock Gate 4 on April 10, 1912.

There are nods to Southampton’s Titanic connection throughout the city, including the Titanic Engineer’s Memorial.

Located just 70-miles outside of London (see best hotels) , Southampton has easy public and national transport links and the average rail time between the UK capital and Southampton is approx. 1 hour and 20 minutes on a direct train.

Southampton has seen a huge amount of re-generation in recent years and it has become a popular and vibrant place to visit for people of all ages.

There’s something on offer for everyone to enjoy and how much you immerse yourself into its history and culture is entirely up to you.

Southampton Cruise Terminals

Southampton has several cruise terminals and they are:

  • City Cruise Terminal – Western Docks
  • Mayflower Cruise Terminal – Berth 106, Dock Gate 10
  • Ocean Cruise Terminal – Cunard Road Berth 46/47
  • QEII Cruise Terminal – Berth 38/39, Dock Gate 4
  • Horizon Cruise Terminal – Berth 102

They are all relatively close together and as you enter the city by car, there is ample signage to point you in the right direction.

All five terminals are also easily accessed via public transport links, although, we would recommend using a taxi to get from Southampton Central train station if you have a lot of luggage.

There are always taxi’s outside the main entrance to the station. Cost is around £6 to £9, but may cost more on weekends and bank holidays.

Who Sails from Southampton?

Today, Southampton is a home port to numerous cruise ships from lines including Cunard, P&O Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and many others.

Other cruise lines that often sail from the city or include stops in itineraries include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Norwegian Cruise Line, Aida, MSC Cruises and Oceania Cruises.

Things to see and do in Southampton

Southampton offers a huge variety of things to see and do and it’s also the gateway to exploring places further afield, such as London and the New Forest.

Of course, how far you can go and what you can do will depend on how long you are in port. If you’re joining or disembarking your ship in Southampton, we would highly recommend that you spend a night or maybe 2 in a hotel and give yourself ample time to explore this wonderful maritime rich city and its surrounding areas.

So, what can you do in Southampton itself? Well, let us mention some places we think should be on your list:

SeaCity Museum SeaCity Museum tells the story of the people of the city, their fascinating lives and historic connections with Titanic and the sea. They bring maritime history to life through an interactive experience designed for all ages and it’s absolutely worth visiting. You can find out more information on their website.

West Quay Shopping Centre West Quay is a large shopping complex right in the heart of the city and features hundreds of shops, restaurants and bars. It’s also right next to some of the old remains in the city, including Bargate and the historical old town walls.

Tudor House & Garden Tudor House & Garden is a Grade I listed building located in St Michael’s Square on Bugle Street. It was established as Southampton’s first museum in 1912 and today offers visitors a glimpse into more than 800 years of history. It was built in the late 15th Century and is Southampton’s most important historic building.

Titanic Engineers’ Memorial Located in East Andrew’s Park, this is a memorial to the engineers who died in the Titanic disaster on 15 April 1912.

Hythe Ferry & Railway The small town of Hythe is a short ferry ride across the Solent and once you arrive, you can enjoy the journey aboard the Hythe Pier Railway, the longest operating public pier railway in the world. Hythe is your typical British seaside town and it’s definitely worth giving up a few hours of your day to enjoy.

Southampton Common Just one of the many public green spaces within the city, Southampton Common is a great place to relax and people watch. You could also buy some refreshments from local stores and enjoy a small picnic.

Solent Sky Museum Solent Sky is a museum dedicated to the history of aviation in Southampton, the Solent area and Hampshire. It’s certainly worth a visit if aviation interests you.

A Little Further Afield

If you have previously visited Southampton and are looking for ideas on other places to explore, then why not consider some of the below options. Of course, how far you can go will depend on how long you are spending in the city.

Isle of Wight If time allows, you could also visit the Isle of Wight. Red Funnel ferry services operates from Southampton (close to the Ocean and QEII terminals) via the RedJet and the Red Funnel vessels. Both of these services debark and embark in Cowes. The RedJet is the fastest option, with the journey time being approx. 25-minutes and for foot passengers only. The Red Funnel service is approx. 60-minutes and cars can be loaded.

Isle of Wight

New Forest New Forest National Park , the New Forest Wildlife Park, Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway and the National Motor Museum can all be found in the New Forest area. We would recommend doing further research on this before departure and making a plan of exactly what you want to see and do during your time in the area.

London This one is self-explanatory, it’s the UK’s capital city and bursting with things to see, do, eat and experience. Trains from Southampton Central run throughout the day to London Waterloo.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Approx. 30 minutes from Southampton in a taxi, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is an absolute must for naval and maritime fans. Part of HM Naval Base Portsmouth, it is home to HMS Victory and HMS Warrior 1860. There are also harbour tours available.

Stonehenge A prehistoric UNESCO World Heritage Site (added to the list in 1986) known the world over, it is believed to have been constructed between 3000 B.C. and 2000 B.C. You can easily take a 5 hour tour from Southampton to visit Stonehenge , with an additional stop in Salisbury.

Best Time to Visit and Cruise from Southampton

Southampton is far warmer in the summer months and therefore you’ll find more outdoor things to enjoy, including festivals and events. But we think Southampton is a great place to visit at any time of the year because there’s always something to do.

You’ll often find an impressive Christmas market in the heart of the city during the festive season, the Isle of Wight Festival is held every year on its namesake island, the Southampton annual Boat Show is world-renowned and there are dozens of public spaces, restaurants and bars to enjoy

Cruise ships visit and depart the city throughout the year, with the summer being incredibly busy for those escaping on Mediterranean cruises or Norwegian Fjords and Baltic cruises. The cooler autumn and winter months are usually when you’ll see an increase in sailings to places such as the Canary Islands and across to the Caribbean.

Southampton is also the start point for many World Cruises, so it really does live up to its other name of ‘Gateway to the World’.

Southampton Cruise Hotels

Southampton is certainly not short on hotel options and some of the closest to the docks are:

  • Holiday Inn Southampton
  • The Star Hotel
  • Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel
  • Jurys Inn Southampton
  • Southampton Harbour & Spa
  • Premier Inn Southampton City Centre
  • Travelodge Southampton

There are dozens of other hotels and Bed & breakfast accommodations in the city, but the above are some of the closest. Private rentals can also be found. We suggest making reservations as early as possible – when the port is busy, the hotels can quickly become full weeks in advance.

There are also some hotels outside of the city that offer cruise specific packages, usually with the inclusion of car parking for 2-weeks. These are ideal choices if you plan on driving to the port.

Getting to Southampton Cruise Terminals from London

The journey from London to Southampton is pretty straightforward, although there is no direct train route. You can take one train from London Heathrow to London Paddington and then a train from there to Southampton.

The journey between Paddington and Southampton is approx. 1 hour and 46 minutes. You can also take the Underground from Heathrow to London Waterloo and board a train there to Southampton.

National Express also runs an express coach service between the two and it can often be considerably cheaper than rail fares. It’s best to do your price and ticket research ahead of time. Coaches depart several times per day from Terminals 2,3,4 and 5.

Journey time varies but is often around the 4 hour-plus mark.

Taxis are also an option, but these will be costly. Private shuttles are another option.

Useful Information About Southampton for Cruise Passengers

We always recommend spending some time online doing research on your cruise ports ahead of departure, it allows you to then manage your time in ports to your best advantage.

With this in mind, we want to share a few things with you that might make your planning a little easier for your cruise visit to Southampton.

Quayconnect operates a FREE bus service between Southampton Central train station, West quay Shopping Centre and the Red Funnel/RedJet pier .

This is worth noting if you plan on visiting the Isle of Wight. Occasionally, they will allow passengers to use the service for free who are planning on boarding the Hythe Ferry.

The city is easily accessible on foot, so once you are in the heart of it, public transport is not an absolute necessity. Some of the best areas of the city are pedestrian zones.

Browse the ‘Offers’ section on the Visit Southampton website for information on money saving deals within the city. These often include student discount information, 2-4-1 drinks offers, food offers and more.

Southampton, England

Southampton is a coastal city located in southern England, about 70 miles southwest of London. The city is a major cruise departure port and one of the country's largest commercial ports. Visitors will find the longest surviving stretch of medieval walls in England and museums such as Tudor House and Garden, the maritime SeaCity Museum and the aviation-focused Solent Sky. Many London tours hit the highlights, from the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace and the Crown Jewels display at the Tower of London, to a cruise along the River Thames and a ride on the world-famous London Eye, a 443-foot Ferris wheel offering bird's-eye views of the capital city. It also is a great starting point for countryside excursions to the mysterious structures at Stonehenge as well as the towns of Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare.

  • Joining A Cruise In Southampton

We have been welcoming cruise passengers to Southampton for over 100 years, so you're in very good hands.

If you are joining a cruise in Southampton then this page has a wealth of information to help you plan your trip. The Port of Southampton has five dedicated cruise terminals; City Cruise, Horizon, Mayflower, Ocean, and QEII. The locations of these terminals are shown on our visitor map ( click here to download ). Please take a look at your cruise booking confirmation to find out from which terminal you will depart.

Getting to Your Cruise Ship

Arriving by car & parking.

The Port of Southampton is located within close distance of the UK motorway network via the M27 or M3 motorways. The port and relevant cruise terminals are well signposted as you approach the city and are located just off the A33.

There are a number of short-term and long-term parking options for cruise passengers departing from Southampton:

  • ABParking is the only official operator with on-site car parks located within the Port of Southampton for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, NCL, MSC and Disney Cruises
  • Cruise and Passenger Services offer long-term parking for guests booked onto Cunard, P&O and Princess Cruises. This meet and greet service must be pre-booked
  • Airlynx Parking has secure off-site parking and offers transfers to all of the cruise terminals

Each cruise terminal has disabled bays, as well as drop-off points and Pay & Display short-term car parking facilities for those who would like to wave their loved ones off or welcome them back from a cruise. Alternatively, there are several options for parking in the city centre with both short and long stay car parks.

Arriving By Rail

Southampton Central Station is the closest railway station to the Port of Southampton. From here, the port is just a five-minute taxi ride and taxis are readily available at the station.

Arriving by Air

The nearest airport is Southampton International Airport, on the outskirts of the city. Trains from the airport to Southampton Central station take around 8 minutes and run every 10-15 minutes. There is also a bus (Unilink U1) which runs every 10-15 minutes between Southampton Airport and Town Quay, calling at many stops across the city centre, including the railway station (please note that terminals are up to 30 minutes walk from Town Quay).

Arriving by Coach

There are regular National Express coaches to Southampton’s central coach station. From here, it is between 10 and 15 minutes walk to City and Horizon Terminal. If you were heading to Mayflower, we anticipate an additional 15 minutes. If your cruise is located in Ocean & QEII terminal the walk will be a minimum of 30 minutes and where possible a taxi may be more suitable.

Arriving by Foot

Southampton City Centre, with its many hotels, is within walking distance of all five terminals and takes approximately 15-20 minutes depending on which terminal you are departing from and where you are in the city.

Before You Board Your Cruise Ship

There are luggage drop-off areas at all of the cruise terminals where porters will be on-hand to help load your luggage. Please keep your hand luggage with you.

All of the cruise terminals have ample seating, vending machines and standard and disabled access toilets.

Ceanos Café offers a selection of hot and cold snacks, as well as hot, cold and alcoholic beverages in a number of the terminals. A stand offering complimentary magazines can also be found here, with the collection changing throughout the year.

Accommodation Before or After Your Cruise

If you are planning to stay in Southampton before or after your cruise, there are a number of accommodation options across the city to meet all budgets and requirements from budget hotels through to five-star luxury accommodation. There are many places to stay that are a short walk or a quick taxi ride from the cruise terminals, offering you convenience and proximity to many of Southampton’s attractions as well. Take a look at our accommodation page  to discover more.

Left luggage services

If you plan on exploring the city before or after your trip, handling luggage can become quite burdensome. In order to make your stay as easy and hands free, there are several locations across Southampton offering left luggage services. If you are stopping off in a hotel before or after your cruise, speak to your hotel about their free left luggage options, while you explore the city.

Burlington House , located on Portland Terrace, is a great option for those looking to do a bit of exploring. They offer left luggage storage Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm, which can be booked via their reception desk or online ( Stasher ).

If you have a wheelchair, electric scooter, or any other mobility support items you can also safely store them here. Drop-off and collection services directly to the terminal are available every day of the week (from 8am – 5pm) including weekends.

Further left luggage services can be found online via Stasher. Simply head over to their website here , select a location, reserve your time slot, and drop off your bags. It's that simple!

And don't forget  Biltong and Bangers over on High Street. Simply pop in and speak with one of their friendly staff or call them on 023 8178 9946.
