Five of County Durham and Darlington's prettiest streets

We are lucky to live in beautiful County Durham - from the historic streets of Durham City to the colourful and vibrant shop and house doors in Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle and Darlington, it has it all. 

In the past, numerous places in the region have been named in the prettiest locations, including Brancepeth - which would be a good start for this list, but we have searched elsewhere for this one.

We have rounded up the five streets that we consider pretty in County Durham and Darlington - but as the headline suggests, these are just some of the ones we consider pretty. 

If you have a different opinion, please do let us know in the comments section.

But, for now, here are five streets in County Durham we consider the prettiest. 

Saddler Street, Durham City

With its historic charm and plenty of character, this street leads to the Market Place in Durham and has so many independent and chain shops and restaurants, but also has some stunning houses and pubs along it. 

Saddler Street also leads up to Durham Cathedral and some amazing architecture along it - which features some of the most historic buildings in Durham.

For those who have visited, or even those who are lucky enough to live on the street, Saddler Street is a credit to the region and brings millions of visitors to the region every year, alongside other attractions, streets and beautiful architecture. 

Langholm Crescent, Darlington

Even though we could have picked countless streets in Darlington, including Duke Street, Post House Wynd and Victoria Embankment, as well as streets in the villages of Darlington - we have gone with Langholm Crescent. 

Given its beautiful houses on the stretch of road, Langholm Crescent is a brilliant area of Darlington, and if you're lucky enough to have seen it in winter, a lot of residents put up amazing Christmas decorations. 

Market Place, Bishop Auckland

It's safe to say that any number of market places could have gone on the list across County Durham and Darlington, Bishop Auckland's Market Place is special. 

With the Spanish Gallery featured, alongside historic houses, the Market Place leads towards the Town Hall on one side and the spectacular Robinson Arch on another. 

While Bishop Auckland has undergone numerous changes over the years, especially the Market Place, it's expected that further developments will happen soon, including on Newgate Street and Fore Bondgate, which also feature their own bit of historical charm.

Galgate, Barnard Castle

There are not many streets in County Durham more historic than Galgate on Barnard Castle - featuring some of the longest-standing properties and businesses in County Durham.

Part of this street, many of the properties listed buildings, have been restored lovingly and have colourful paint jobs, while others are still in the character of how they have stood in the past.

Leading to the centre of Barnard Castle, there are, again, so many places in Barnard Castle that could have been chosen but Galgate is very special. 

High Street/West End, Wolsingham

The sprawling Front Street in Wolsingham is the ideal when it comes to County Durham Streets. 

When you think of picturesque green-lawned streets in County Durham, you often think of Wolsingham. 

While places like Stanhope and other locations could have been picked as locations for a pretty street, we believe Front Street in Wolsingham deserves a mention.

Annunciation cathedral.

The first stone in the foundation of Annunciation Cathedral was laid by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russians in 1998. In 2003, the monument to the First Bishop of the City of Voronezh the Holy Mitrofanios was erected in front of the Cathedral.

Akatov-Alexeyevsky Monastery

Address: 2, Osvobozhdeniya Truda (Liberation of Labor) Street.

The monastery was built in 1620 in tribute to the victory the citizens of Voronezh had had over the Lithuanians and the Ukrainian Cossacks on the commemoration day of Alexy I, the Moscow Metropolitan.

Initially the Monastery was called “The Alexeevsky Monastery on the okat”. Okat meant a gentle slope of the hill where, in front of the river Voronezh, the monastery was erected. Closed in 1931 by the atheistically-minded Bolsheviks it was turned into a nunnery in 1990.

The Bell Tower of the Akatov-Alexeyevsky Monastery

This is the oldest brick building in Voronezh dating back to 1674 and reproducing the architectural style of the Moscow Kremlin towers.

Ilyinskaya Church

Address: 2, Sevastiyanovsky Street.

The church was built in 1767-1771 on the top of the steep hill on the bank of the Voronezh River under the guidance of Alexey Bolkhovitinov, the cleric, the father of Yevgeny Bolkhovitinov (1767-1837), an outstanding figure of the Russian Enlightenment.

The Church was famous for the beauty of its interior, its ancient icons and wall paintings. From 1934 to 1998 there was a Depository of the Voronezh Region State Archives. Presently the Church has been restored and is known as one of the most beautiful temples in Voronezh.
