Sampha Details New Album Lahai, Shares 2023 Tour Dates

The sophomore effort is out on October 20th

Sampha Details New Album Lahai, Shares 2023 Tour Dates

Sampha has detailed his new album, Lahai , out on October 20th via Young. What’s more, the English singer has also mapped out an accompanying fall tour and shared the latest single, “Only.”

The album title references the name of Sampha’s paternal grandfather, which is also the artist’s middle name. Clocking in at 14 tracks, Lahai features contributions from Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey (Kokoroko), Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson (Black Midi), Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves, and Kwake Bass. It’s described in a press release as a “communal affair” in which Sampha explores human connection while crossing genres including jazz, soul, rap, dance, jungle, and West African music.

Sampha’s supporting tour will kick off with a three-date London residency at Hackney Church beginning October 12th ahead of North American dates in Chicago, Toronto, New York City, and more. It will wrap up in December with a brief run of Europe; see the full itinerary below. A Live Nation pre-sale begins on Thursday, September 14th (use access code STUDIO ) ahead of the general on-sale slated for September 15th via Ticketmaster .

Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub for US dates or viagogo for shows in the UK and Europe. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Featuring a skittering beat co-produced by El Guincho and Sampha himself, “Only” is a contemplative track in which Sampha ponders his very existence. “I been on this grind like it’s gonna break my fall,” he sings. “Careerism pothole, like ‘Where my love one goes?’/ Obediently blindly, I trust you and you know.” Watch the accompanying video, directed by Dexter Navy, below.

Lahai also features the previous single “Spirit 2.0 . It marks the follow-up to Sampha’s excellent 2017 debut, Process .

Suggestions

  • Sampha live in London: a solo return worth waiting for

Sampha takes to the stage at Hackney Church to a ripple of applause, joining his bandmates in the centre of the space for an immersive performance in the round.

The enigmatic south London artist dives straight into ‘ Plastic 100°C ’, the introductory track from his 2017 Mercury Prize winning album, Process . For a singer songwriter who has thrived on stripped back, piano led harmonies and an understated yet emotionally powerful voice, this new found approach feels a lot different.

This set of gigs have been named ‘Satellite Business’ by Sampha, who’s new album Lahai is set to drop later this week after a six year hiatus from solo projects. There is certainly a new energy about him as he moves across the stage during his rendition of ‘ Hold On ’, matched by relentless drumming from his band members.

Guiding us through his discography, we then hear ‘ Beneath The Tree ’ from his debut solo project, 2013’s Dual EP. This 6 track project was released a decade ago but the influences and impact it has had across music cannot be underestimated. Sampha’s sound is so unique and personal, any feature or guest appearance on a track since has elevated it to a new standard. This kind of deep, personal connection to the music is only enhanced by the performance in the round, allowing the audience to appreciate the music from all angles and leaving nowhere to hide.

Sampha then blends in some of his new work with a selection of fan favourites from his back catalogue. The fresh approach on Lahai shines through, with fewer tracks steeped in wistfulness and melancholy, moving more towards a universal, spiritual sound that feels more expansive than his previous works. There is more of a playfulness about him than expected, melding together one of his standout tracks, ‘ Without ’, with a cover of the Garage classic ‘ Gabriel ’ by Roy Davis Jr.

We also hear another cover later on in the setlist, this time delving into Massive Attack’s macabre hit ‘ Teardrop ’. The range of emotions on display through the music is engrossing and captivating, travelling through states of vulnerability and sombreness to moments of joy and anticipation.

The artist is then joined on stage by UK Rap icon Stormzy , adding another element to the performance and surprising the audience as he emerged from the crowd. Sampha’s collaborations within the Rap sphere have seen him influence the genre at the highest end, from Drake ’s ‘ Too Much ’ to the more recent ‘ Father Time ’ with Kendrick Lamar . His ability to touch different areas of music whilst staying true to his own inimitable sound is demonstrative of the respect he commands as an artist.

The show then closes with a soulful performance of ‘ Can’t Get Close ’ with Sampha being joined by a host of singers in a circle, before an atmospheric rendition of ‘ Blood On Me ’ to bring the curtain down on an unforgettable night. Sampha is showing a different, more versatile side in his new music, while his previous hits still hold up, especially given the attention to detail he has put into his live show.

The Mercury Prize-winning artist returns to Manchester for an in the round performance celebrating second album LAHAI

Immerse yourself in Sampha ’s signature sound as the multi-talented musician brings his acclaimed live show to Aviva Studios. Staged in the round, this very special performance will be his first headline Manchester show for nearly seven years and one of only two UK stops on his 2024 tour.

From UK breakout star to global icon, Sampha’s influence is felt throughout contemporary culture. Across a studied career, the south London songwriter and producer has released a host of era-defining records including his Mercury Prize-winning debut Process and his acclaimed 2023 follow up LAHAI . No stranger to collaboration, Sampha is also the inimitable voice called upon by some of the greatest artists of our times, from Kendrick Lamar to Stormzy, Drake to Solange, Frank Ocean to Alicia Keys.

Named after his paternal grandfather, LAHAI features contributions from some of Sampha’s closest friends, peers and collaborators including Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey, Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson, Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves and Kwake Bass. The album is a communal affair seeing Sampha explore the many ways in which we as humans connect to each other, and to something bigger than ourselves. If Process was an artist figuring out his own place in the world, engulfed in the shadows of grief and loss, LAHAI is an exercise in the radical acceptance and joy in the human condition, and the beauty in the journey itself.

We’re thrilled to welcome Sampha to Aviva Studios after a sell-out headline show at Albert Hall for MIF17. Join us in the soaring spaces of the Warehouse for a very special in-the-round performance from one of the UK’s most talented artists.

With support from Manchester writer and spoken word artist Isaiah Hull. His work explores and questions the extremities of self with image, word and soul on the page and the stage.

Lead photo: Trinity Ellis.

By bike and active means

There are 40 bike parking spaces at Aviva Studios including space for two accessible bikes.

National Cycling Route 6 passes close to the venue and this TfGM webpage can help with route planning.

You can also hire bikes from on-street docking stations across the city centre. The closest docking stations to our venue are currently on Deansgate by Liverpool Road and (400m from the building) and by King Street (500m from the building). Take a look at Transport for Greater Manchester’s webpage for advice on cycle hire.

By Walking and Other Active Means

Aviva Studios can be approached along Water Street via Liverpool Road (coming from Deansgate or Castlefield).

If you're coming from Quay Street, the safest route to avoid construction works is via the cut-through opposite Gartside Street and past Booking.com.

All footways in the surrounding area are well lit and there are appropriate crossings across all main roads.

Pedestrians with visual impairment are recommended to approach the building via Water Street, from Liverpool Road. This route has traditional carriageway and footway design with fixed street furniture which should help with navigation to the entrance.

A footbridge at Left Bank in Spinningfields provides an accessible link across the River Irwell to Salford Central station, and a further footbridge also links Aviva Studios with the Salford area of Middlewood Locks.

Free bus services stop at all city-centre stations, and near to Aviva Studios along Deansgate, Bridge St and Quay St. Buses on these free routes are wheelchair accessible. For full details of the free bus routes, please visit the TfGM website .

There is a car park approximately 0.6 miles from the event entrance at Water Street Car Park, New Elm Rd, Manchester, M3 4JH.

There is also a NCP car park (Manchester Spinningfields) approximately 0.5 miles away from the venue at Spinningfields, New Quay Street, Manchester, M3 3BE. It has 35 accessible bays.

There are 8 Blue Badge spaces close to our river entrance, under the railway tracks on Water St coming from Liverpool Rd. There are also a few along Quay St. Otherwise head towards Liverpool Road, Great John St and Lower Byrom St – close to our neighbours, the Science and Industry Museum where there are a small number of additional Blue Badge spaces.

For a list of other parking bays available in the area, visit Manchester City Council website .

Sampha Reveals 'LAHAI''s Tracklist, Release Date and Corresponding Tour

Also releasing a new single and music video..

Sampha did the most today – thankfully. This afternoon alone, the British musician managed to unveil the tracklist for his first album in six years, LAHAI , confirm its forthcoming release date, announce two new sets of tour dates, and drop a new single “Only” alongside its music video.

LAHAI, Sampha’s sophomore album, is an authentic and personal exploration into the chaos and the calm of human existence; the album shares both his middle name as well as his paternal grandfather’s first name. The album also sees contributions from some of Sampha’s closest friends, including Yaeji, Léa Sen, Sheila Maurice Grey of Kokoroko, Ibeyi, Black Midi drummer Morgan Simpson, Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves, and Kwake Bass.
