4 Ways to Cruise the San Juan Islands

a group of adventure travelers coming ashore during a San Juan Islands small ship cruise in the pacific northwest

With 408 miles of shoreline and 172 named islands, Washington’s San Juan Islands are best explored by small ship. Below we detail a selection of San Juan Island cruises that allow you to access this close-to-home archipelago in style and ease.

Expect to meet pods of orcas feasting on salmon, playful seals and sea lions lounging on rocky islets, black bear and deer flourishing in deep evergreen forests, as well as royalty atop the trees since the region hosts the highest concentration of bald eagles in the Lower 48. The San Juans are also dubbed the “Gourmet Archipelago” with culinary festivals, shellfish farms, vineyards, breweries, distilleries and tasting rooms. Let’s go!

IN THIS POST – 4 Ways to Cruise the San Juan Islands: 1. Cruise on a Historic Small Yacht – 6 days, round-trip Bellingham 2. Take a National Geographic Cruise – 8 days, round-trip Seattle 3. Pass by en route to Alaska – 13 days, Seattle to Juneau 4. Book a Private Boat Charter

On a San Juan Islands cruise two guests stand onboard with a camera facing the sun setting over an island in the distance.

1) Cruise the San Juans on a Historic Yacht

The 6-day Voyage Through the San Juan Islands aboard 12-guest Catalyst offers cruises round-trip from Bellingham, Washington—a short drive, flight or shuttle bus ride from Seattle. Experience the emerald jewels of the San Juan Archipelago on this close-to-home voyage, with daily opportunities to experience nature in an active way while also tasting local foods, beer, wine and spirits. Start each morning with a walk or kayak paddle and spend each afternoon visiting with the vintners, brewers and distillers that the Pacific Northwest is known for.

The Catalyst is an intimate small ship offering historic charm and hearty, experienced crew members with character. The crew will surely be among the highlights of your Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise. Her original 1932 Washington Diesel engine is the only one like it in the world, so history and boat aficionados will love sailing the San Juans on this boat. Plus there’s the ship’s gourmet cuisine paired with the beers, wines and spirits discovered daily on her Puget Sound cruises.

2) Take a National Geographic San Juan Island Cruise

The newest ship to offer San Juan cruises, via the 8-day  Exploring British Columbia & the San Juan Islands  trip, is the 100-guest National Geographic Venture. This purpose-built expedition vessel launched in 2018, in California, and now embarks on regularly scheduled departures. Get on this ship for the excellent expedition staff, high-tech exploration and educational equipment.

National Geographic Venture  is state-of-the-art, a vessel made for exploring coastal waters, shallow coves and fast-moving channels thanks to her shallow draft that draws only nine feet of water. This allows her to sail into places where much larger ships cannot go, and further setting her apart from other San Juan Island cruise ships is a guide complement that includes a historian, a geologist/naturalist, a wellness specialist and a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor.

Her San Juan Island cruises operate round-trip from Seattle. Two days are spent cruising Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands by expedition landing craft, kayak, paddleboard and hike, with a special stop at picturesque Friday Harbor to visit the Whale Museum and local shops. The world-class Canadian city of Vancouver is a nearby option for bonus travel before or after exploring the San Juan Islands by boat,.

3) Sail Past the San Juans in Route to Alaska

If you want to see the best of the Northwest and don’t mind just passing through the San Juans more quickly, a good choice is the comprehensive 13-day  Inside Passage with Olympic National Park & 2 Days in Glacier Bay  aboard the 22-guest Safari Quest , 36-guest Safari Explorer , 84-guest Safari Endeavour  or 86-guest Wilderness Legacy . This trip visits two UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Glacier Bay National Park and Olympic National Park—plus offers opportunities for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, beach combing and enjoying guided skiff rides.

A stand-up paddle boarder floats in front of the Safari Quest on Alaska's Inside Passage & San Juans Cruise.

There’s no dedicated day in the San Juan Islands, but you will sail past them. Add to this stops in Canada’s Inside Passage and Alaska’s Misty Fjords National Monument, Ketchikan and Glacier Bay National Park, and you truly have a trip that goes beyond what any other San Juan cruises do.

4) Book a Boat Charter San Juan Islands

A yacht charter in the San Juan Islands is an ideal vacation if you want to choose your own route and activities. You can actually save money when you book a San Juan Islands boat charter as blocking out a whole ship for your group costs less per cabin than booking on regularly scheduled San Juan cruises. Our most popular yachts to charter in the San Juan Islands are the 12-guest Catalyst and the 22-guest Safari Quest , but the larger expedition ships listed above as well as other yachts may be available for charter cruises .

Note that charters are limited by the ships’ locations as these yachts also position up for small ship Alaska cruises . Your best bet to secure a private charter in the San Juan Islands is to travel in the seasons that these ships are positioned around Seattle: spring and fall. Contact our experts to discuss your charter options for San Juan Island cruises. We can ensure you know what San Juan cruises and Puget Sound cruises are available for your group.

We are going to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We did a small ship cruise in Alaska 20 years ago but never in this area. Our adult children would make it 6 of us. Is there a charter we could do for around 5 days in August? There are teachers in the group who would not be able to go in September.

' src=

Hi Dorene, What a wonderful way to celebrate your milestone! If you enjoyed Alaska, you will love the San Juan Islands. An Adventure Specialist will be in touch soon to help you hone in on the ideal ship with August availability.

' src=

Hi, We will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary 10/4/23 and have a great love for the San Juans and the NW in general. Would you suggest a 3-day tour (possibly longer) for the two of us seniors who will be 79 and 81 at the time of the trip. We are in reasonably good shape, healthy, and love anything outdoors and on the water. One of us is limited in range of walking but short jaunts are fine. We still run our small boat and enjoy some biking (one a recumbent) but cannot imagine anything better than a few days in the San Juans. Suggestions are welcome as we probably need to plan early.

' src=

Thanks for your question Leonard, and congratulations! Small ship is the best way to explore the many islands of Washington’s San Juan’s plus, an even more incredible way to celebrate such a milestone. While you will find single day and shorter 3 day cruises out of Bellingham, we are strong proponents that longer is better. There is so much to see and do, we focus on longer itineraries ranging from 6 to 8 days – the shortest being the 6-day Voyage Through the San Juan Islands aboard historic yacht 12-guest Catalyst . If you would like to talk about this itinerary please don’t hesitate to contact our experts .

' src=

Would like an itinerary to see the San Juan’s by a personal yacht

Hi Betsy, Take a look at the 6-day Voyage Through the San Juan Islands itinerary that is sailed by two small historic yachts, the 12-guest Catalyst or 8-guest Westward . Or for more information on chartering a yacht in the in the San Juan Islands please contact us .

I am interesting in an an-inclusive charter, with captain/staff, in late August or September 2021. For perhaps 6-8 ppl. Is this something you do? For a week or so…

Hi Brandi, thanks for your comment. Yes, our charter cruises are both all-inclusive and fully crewed charters. Having an expert team aboard is essential to a safe and successful voyage. An Adventure Specialist will be in contact with you soon to help you find the right charter ship and the trip for your group.

' src=

Thinking about an all inclusive trip thru the San Juan worn family to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. There would be 10-15 people. Interested in only our family on the boat. Would that be the 8 day, 22 passenger trip? If so 9-8 days is too long for most.

Hello Janis, What a great way to celebrate an anniversary! Congratulations! Chartering a boat with this size group is a great idea and often offers more flexibility for creating unique itineraries. An Adventure Specialist will be touch to help you sort your options.

We are late trying to find something, but interested in a trip through the San Juan Islands from Seattle. Three, four or five days…a nice boat. Nothing too big. Anything available in mid to late June or are we too late? Two of us, two beds. Janet

Hello Janet, Our shortest San Juan Islands small ship cruise from Seattle is the 8-day Exploring British Columbia & the San Juan Islands aboard the National Geographic Venture, which cruises the San Juan Islands then extends north through the Strait of Georgia. This 8-day schedule offers many more opportunities to see orca whales, eagles and other wildlife that might not be as plentiful on a shorter cruise. If you are able to spend a few more days in the Pacific Northwest, this round-trip Seattle cruise is truly an experience of a lifetime. One of our Adventure Specialists will contact you to discuss your options and to help guide you through the decision making process.

Seaplane Flight Return or Round Trip Seakayaking Experience Whale Watching Experience

We’ll meet you wherever you’re staying in the Seattle area.

All ages welcome.

The archipelago  could very well be a National Park.

The San Juan archipelago harbors mythical beauty amid its islands, bluffs and seascapes; its regional historical relevance is just as stunning! Spend the day on our San Juan Island Tour discovering this mysterious landscape with a naturalist guide. As the morning ferry glides toward Friday Harbor, keep an eye out for sea life and birds. This hour-long ferry ride will keep you glued to your window or deck railing as you slip between islands.

Once on San Juan Island, fantastic walking options, birding spots, and whale watching from shore will keep you busy. If the islands weren’t lightly populated–the whole place would make an incredible National Park! Picnic with local fare and then explore historic British and American “Pig War” camps. Explore the rocky coastline and old lighthouse of Lime Kiln State Park; bring your binoculars–it’s generally considered one of the best places on the planet to watch for whales from shore! As the sun begins to set–hop into a seaplane for a gorgeous flight back to Seattle.

The peaceful hour-long ferry ride from Anacortes is a marine cruise in itself and is an excellent opportunity to keep an eye out for an impressive diversity of wildlife, including Bald Eagles, Harbor Seals, Dall’s and Harbor Porpoises, Stellar’s and California Sea Lions, a variety of marine birds, and even our resident Orcas if you’re lucky. After traversing the scenic waterways between islands such as Cypress, Lopez, Orcas, and Shaw, we reach the quaint but charming seaside town of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

Disembark from the ferry and head in one of several directions to stretch your legs and smell the sea breeze. Options might include: a moderately-challenging hike to the top of Young Hill for remarkable views of the San Juan archipelago, beach-combing along the driftwood-strewn South Beach, or exploring the historic American and English “Pig War” Camps, which are part of the San Juan Island National Historical Park (they were encampments during a post-Civil War boundary dispute between the United States and England).

Afternoons are best to venture to Lime Kiln State Park, considered one of the best places for observing Orcas from land in North America (and an excellent alternative for a picnic lunch). Even if J-, K-, or L-pod (orca families) aren’t around, the dramatic and stunning views across Haro Strait towards Vancouver Island and the Olympic Mountains are well worth the stop, not to mention there is often plenty of other marine wildlife to keep an eye out for during a short hike along the shoreline.

We might end the day with a visit to Pelindaba Lavender Farm to revel in the intoxicating aroma of acres of lavender, or San Juan Vineyards for tasting locally-grown Siegerrebe and Madeleine Angevine varietals, among others, before finally getting in line for the return ferry with enough time to explore Friday Harbor (and perhaps sampling some delicious local fish and chips or – even better – ice cream!) on your own.

“For two summers, we have traveled by boat with Captain Ben into the San Juan Islands. These trips are the thing that stay with my family throughout the entire year and are something that we talk about over and over again. The tranquility, natural beauty, and overall vibe of the trip is something very special, indeed! There is not a single detail that is overlooked throughout the trip or on Ben’s beautiful boat, True. The sleeping accommodations are so comfortable and who doesn’t sleep amazingly well being gently rocked by the salty sea?! I’m the cook each trip and the galley is well appointed and fun, fun, fun to cook in! Lots of space to stretch out and relax, and beautiful spaces to be together, and also to find a private corner to reflect on where you are, and on all the beautiful existential questions that come up on a trip like this! Ben is not only a very capable sailor, but also a charming person in general. His storytelling and knowledge of the places, the flora, and the wild birds and animals that we encounter, are something that he shares freely and happily with his guests, and is frankly one of the best parts of the whole trip. We all feel safe and very well cared for aboard Ben’s boat. He tailors each trip to our desires and eagerly accommodates our wishes and dreams for what the trip can be. Then, in his singular way, he exceeds our every expectation and outdoes himself at every turn. We took this year off, but we can’t wait to sail with Ben again!” – Heidi MacFarley

A San Juan Islands day trip from Seattle is a must for anyone visiting Puget Sound. Nestled in the heart of the Salish Sea between the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island, BC, the San Juan Islands is a collection of more than 743 isles and rocks, most of which are uninhabited by humans.

Of the 20 or so that are, just three, San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island, are open to tourists. Each of the islands has distinct character and qualities, and whether you choose one or all three, you’ll doubtless find plenty to do and see.

Table of Contents

Getting to the San Juan Islands from Seattle

The San Juan Islands archipelago starts just about 90 miles north of Seattle . And while day trips on the mainland (such as to Mt Rainier ) may seem easier, the San Juan Islands are a destination not to be missed. There are a few ways to get there, but most travelers begin their day trip in the car.

Typically, this means going via the city of Anacortes, where you can catch a ferry to the San Juan Islands. Located on Fidalgo Island, Anacortes connects to neighboring Whidbey Island and mainland Skagit County, Washington state, by bridges on either side.

By car, you can reach Anacortes from Seattle in a little over two hours.

Take Interstate 5 north and exit at Burlington, #230. Then, turn west onto Highway 20, which will take you to Anacortes. From the city center, follow the signs to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver, BC ferry terminal.

Alternatively, you can take a more roundabout route and get to Anacortes via the Keystone Ferry from Port Townsend, a quaint town just southwest of Seattle featuring beautiful Victorian architecture.

The Keystone Ferry takes you to Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve in Coupeville on Whidbey Island. From here, you can follow the main road to Highway 20, which traverses the island and continue north over the Deception Pass Bridge to Anacortes.

Port Townsend, Washington

Bear in mind the ferry from Port Townsend to Coupeville cannot run in extremely low tides. While this doesn’t happen too often, check the tide charts or call ahead to avoid delays.

You can also go north from Seattle via I-5 North, then connect to Highway 525 North to the Mukilteo Speedway. From the Mukilteo ferry terminal, you can catch the ferry to Clinton on the southern tip of Whidbey Island. Highway 20 goes straight up the island, about a 90-minute drive from end to end, then through Deception Pass to Anacortes.

Unfortunately, day trips to the San Juan Islands aren’t viable via public transit. Google Maps does outline some options, which involve a combination of buses and ferries and a total of eight or so hours’ travel time. However, it’d be a much better use of time and energy to take a car or hop on a charter.

Even if you drive much of the way, as you may have realized, at some point, you will have to hop on a boat or plane to get to your final destination.

If you need to rent a car for your trip, you can browse the options available on Rentalcars.com. If you only want to go whale watching, you can also book this tour that departs from Anacortes.

By Ferry

There is no direct ferry from Seattle to the San Juan Islands. But you can take a ferry from the Seattle port to Anacortes.

Washington State Ferries offer round-trip, flat fee fares from Anacortes to the San Juan Islands. You can either walk on or take your car. The trip takes about an hour each way.

During the summer, the ferry lines can fill up fast. Get there early to avoid an hours-long wait.

Ferry to the San Juan Islands

San Juan Islands Day Trip Itinerary

The San Juan Islands may not be as famous as the Emerald City. Still, they have been a keystone of the Salish Sea for millennia, inhabited by Coast Salish people for about 9,000 years before European explorers from Spain set foot on the land in 1791.

As soon as you set foot on the islands, it won’t be hard to see why the land was so coveted, even igniting a “ pig war ” between England and the burgeoning U.S. in the mid-nineteenth century.

Besides their spectacular natural beauty, the islands enjoy a temperate climate thanks to the rain shadow provided by the surrounding mountains.

The fair weather, combined with its locale, makes the San Juan archipelago a prime destination for tourists and its resident orcas, migrating humpbacks and minke whales, and a vast array of other wildlife, including porpoises, sea lions, and seals.

The islands are also home to the largest concentration of bald eagles in the continental United States and fertile ground for crops including lavender, camas root, and berries, among various other plants.

Don’t be surprised if you start checking out bungalows on Zillow by the end of your first day. But assuming you don’t decide to make a permanent move just yet, here are a few stops to check out.

Friday Harbor

Of the three tourism-friendly islands, Orcas is technically the largest. However, the second-largest — San Juan Island — is the most populous and by far the most frequented.

The county seat is housed here, as is the county hospital and historic fishing village Friday Harbor is the county’s only incorporated town, as well as the central transport hub between the islands and mainland U.S. and Canada, as well as surrounding isles.

In Downtown Friday Harbor alone, there is plenty to see and do.

Check out the art galleries, bookstores, and gift shops of the small downtown core, and grab lunch at one of the locally-owned restaurants or cafes. San Juan Vineyards, housed in a charming nineteenth-century schoolhouse, is a must for winos.

Other popular spots include Duck Soup Inn, Friday’s Crabhouse , Rocky Bay Café, Mike’s Café and Wine Bar , Downriggers , San Juan Brewing Co., and Cease & Desist.

Rocky coast of Friday Harbor

Whale Watching

Whale-watching is by far the most popular activity in the whole of the San Juan Islands, and not just among tourists but residents too. Trust me, people who live on the islands for decades still get giddy when spotting one of these majestic creatures.

If you’re making just a one-day trip to the San Juan Islands and have to choose one main activity, make it this one.

There are around 72 resident orcas around the San Juan Islands and transient pods making their way to or from Alaska. You might see orcas in any season, but they’re most active in summer.

Several whale-watching excursions depart from the islands, operating every day during peak seasons. If you visit the San Juan Islands in the summer, consider booking ahead of time as tickets may sell out, especially on weekends. Some popular options include this tour from Friday Harbor or this tour from Orcas Island .

Whale watching in San Juan Island

Farm Hopping

The San Juan Islands, like many islands in the region, is home to many farmers who grow crops to feed locals as well as visitors and mainland residents, and restauranteurs.

The San Juan Island Farmers Market , every Saturday morning, is the best place to sample a little bit of everything. But you can also take a self-guided tour of various farms or, if you’re visiting in autumn, join the Savor San Juans Festival with various foodie events and farm tours.

If you’re making your Seattle to San Juan Islands day trip in late summer, stop by Pelindaba Lavender Farm or OrcaSong Farm and take in the sea of sweet-scented lavender blossoms.

You can buy items from the farm stores as well, including fantastic lavender ice cream, or pick your own lavender bushels straight from the fields.

Over on Orcas Island, Orcas Moon Alpaca Farm is a must. Who doesn’t want to hang out with some of the earth’s floofiest and gentlest creatures? You can also purchase handmade alpaca goods from the farm shop.

Lime Kiln State Park

San Juan Island’s west coast is Lime Kiln Point State Park, one of the best places in the Pacific Northwest to whale-watch from land in the summer (May to September).

Even if you don’t see whales, you can trek the ruins of the former lime kiln, check out the 1919 lighthouse and observe seals, sea lions, and porpoises, all against the beautiful backdrop of the Haro Straight.

The Lime Kiln Point Lighthouse

Hiking San Juan Island National Historical Park

There are two former military camps on San Juan Island and, as you may have guessed, these are the American Camp and English Camp.

Although there are certain distinctions, they’re pretty similar in aesthetic and layout, and both are located within the National Historical Park. The park offers an interesting peek into the past and hiking trails with lovely sea views.

South Beach and Fourth of July Beach along with Cattle Point Lighthouse, located in the American Camp on the south of the island, are favorites among visitors.

Roche Harbor

On the north end of San Juan Island is Roche Harbor, with its historic Hotel de Haro, built in 1886. Once a bunkhouse for men who worked in the lime kilns, it is now a resort and popular wedding destination.

But the hotel is far from the only attraction. Roche Harbor is a great jumping-off point for kayaking as well. Paddling around the rugged coastline, you’ll enjoy incredible views of snow-capped mountains, vast ocean, and various marine creatures.

Be sure to paddle by Half Moon Bay, the only public part of Henry Island, with its gorgeous stash of sea glass and rocks.

Hiking Orcas Island

If you have the time, hop on another ferry from Friday Harbor and set sail for Orcas Island. The 50-minute journey itself, with stunning views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Mount Baker, and the Cascades , is a treat. But the island, with its laid-back energy and wild landscape, has more to offer still, particularly for the outdoorsy types.

When you arrive on Orcas Island if you’re up for a challenge, head to Moran State Park and hike the rigorous 6.7-mile Mount Constitution Loop Trail for an even more spectacular view of the surrounding islands and Strait and 2,000 feet above sea level.

If you’re not quite up to that, the Little Summit Trail is just 2.2 miles with a gain of 389 feet.

Alternatively, the Land Bank area of Turtleback Mountain offers views arguably as good as those at Mt. Constitution or Little Summit and may be less crowded during peak tourism season.

Those who don’t feel like doing for a hike may be interested in this half-day sail from the island. It’s an excellent (and peaceful) way to experience some incredible views and learn a bit about sailing!

Orcas Island Harbour

Explore Eastsound, Orcas Island

Eastsound, about a 15-minute drive from the ferry dock, is the Friday Harbor of Orcas Island, with charming late 19th Century architecture and some fantastic small shops and cafes.

Stroll through the main drag and stop into Brown Bear Baking, or the Orcas Island Food Co-Op for a meal or stock up on locally made provisions before taking the ferry back.

If you have time, some other spots to check out on Orcas Island’s Scenic Byway include Orcas Island Artworks , Orcas Island Pottery on West Beach Road, and the Orcas Island Historical Museum .

Alternatively, you could also book a wine and cheese tasting where you can sample locally-produced products in a lovely setting.

Biking Lopez Island

Smaller in size but similar in character to Orcas, Lopez is the heavenly home to more animals than people. But the humans that do inhabit it are famously friendly .

With a relatively level terrain, quiet country roads, and stunning scenery, it’s a haven for cyclists. Don’t worry if you didn’t bring your bike; you can rent them. Cycle through the roads lined with colorful wildflowers, including poppies and lupines, and stop by one (or a few) of the island’s vineyards and artists’ studios.

For a beach stroll, head to Agate Beach on the southern end of the island or Spencer Spit State Park to the east. You can also hike the forest trail at Shark Reef Sanctuary, home to far more sea lions and otters than sharks.

In summer, the weekend farmer’s market in Lopez Village is a great spot to stop for provisions before catching the ferry back.

Have More Time?

With so much to see and do, it’s challenging to fit everything into a one-day San Juan Islands itinerary. If you have more than one day in the area, after exploring each of the San Juan Islands, consider spending a bit of time in the historic town of Anacortes on the ferry ride back and head to Deception Pass State Park for some more fantastic hiking and stunning ocean views.

Following Highway 20 from Anacortes and Deception Pass, you can stop by Whidbey Island’s creative hub, Langley, along the way to the South Whidbey ferry in Clinton. Another popular spot for Seattleites in need of a weekend getaway, the quaint historic town is a hub for creative types.

It’s also home to a booming population of adorable bunnies. But mention the latter to locals at your own risk; it’s a hot topic, particularly among farmers and gardeners.

Planning a trip the end of August. We are going from Seattle to the wineries, then to Anacortes to take the ferry to Friday Harbor for 3 days. We want to go whale watching 2 days. Staying at a B&B. Then ferry back to Anacortes and drive to Seattle Harbor. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Am planning to take a bucket trip there with my grandson late summer. Would appreciate any info on going there. Not a tight budget trip but reasonable one. Going to see whales.

Staying in Freeland for 3 days. Would like to see Whidbey Island and it’s surroundings along with as much as we can see in the San Juan Islands. Suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Hi Lourdrie, sounds like you’re planning a great trip! We will have a Whidbey Island article published here in the next few weeks so make sure to stay tuned 🙂

San Juan Islands Sailing Tour

6 day cruise through the san juan islands.

hiking san juan islands - fully crewed san juan islands sailing tours from bellingham wa

So much of the world passes before us without our being able to see, touch, or feel it. Our San Juan island trips provide a way to experience what is so often missed. Sheltered from the Pacific Ocean and nestled dry and warm in a rain shadow formed by the Olympic mountains, the San Juan islands receive less than half of Seattle’s rainfall.

From quaint seaside villages to remote cedar lined coves, the verdant islands beckon sailors to explore. Discover a deserted lighthouse on an early morning hike, the joy of setting sail in the warm afternoon sun, or the freedom of paddling a kayak over eel grass shallows to reveal a myriad of colorful sea stars. Our sailing adventures will leave you refreshed and renewed.

Northwind in bellingham marina - fully crewed san juan islands sailing tours

Using Northwind as your base you will explore both quiet coves on secluded islands, to quaint towns and historic sites. There are four major islands which include Orcas, San Juan, Shaw and Lopez. But in reality there are over 200 islands in the archipelago to see. Each island is unique with its own story to tell and most are only accessible by small boat.

There are many variations to this itinerary below. If you book the entire boat we can plan a custom itinerary for your group. If you’re not sure where to go, we will take you to some of our favorite spots. Sit back and relax and lets take a short cruise through the islands.

sailing the san juan islands - crewed san juan islands sailing from bellingham

Day One – Sunday 2:00 pm – Welcome Aboard Northwind, your home for the next 6 days. You are going to love your cruise with us! After you arrive we will show you to your cabin and have a brief orientation to familiarize you with being aboard the yacht.

Shortly we will leave our slip in Bellingham and take a casual sail across the bay towards Lummi Island. You will want to be up on deck, or in the covered cockpit for the best view of 10,778 ft Mt. Baker. If anyone wants to take the helm, we will show you what to do.

We head up Hales Passage and then pass isolated Clark Island, a favorite of kayakers. Off to our port side is Matia Island. Matia is a small Washington State Marine Park and much of the island is part of the San Juan Island National Wildlife Refuge. It’s getting late so we better sail on to beautiful Sucia island, our destination.

Sucia Island - Sail the San Juans - sailing cruises to san juan islands from bellingham

We will put some appetizers out to hold you over until dinner. Sucia is one of our favorite islands, translated from the Spanish the name means “foul” and refers to the rocks and reefs that surround the island. Sucia is perhaps one of the most interesting islands in the area for geology and wildlife. It is the largest of the Marine Parks and is actually composed of several little islands surrounding one main island.

There are several different coves to choose from when spending the night. Two of our favorites, Echo Bay on the east side has lovely views of Mt. Baker, and Shallow Bay on the west side is known for its sunsets. Which do you prefer?

OK, lets drop anchor and get dinner going…

Roche Harbor san juan islands sail the san juans

Day Two – Monday: After exploring Sucia we set course for Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. On our way to Roche we will sail up the west side of Orcas Island. (we often see porpoise in this area) You may even catch a glimpse of abandoned lime kilns hidden in the forest along the shore.

We will serve lunch underway today. Arriving in Roche the beautiful Hotel De Haro (once the home of Limestone king, John McMillan) will greet you along with a cute little white church, a beautiful garden and an unusual monument.

san juan island sailing cruises sail the san juans

Need more exercise? There is a great hike nearby to a viewpoint at the top of Mt. Young where British soldiers once stood watch. We often spot Orca whales nearby off the west side of San Juan Island and the salmon fishing can be good near here in the fall. If you want to try some of the best oysters you’ll ever taste-we will hop in the zodiac and pay a visit to Westcott Bay Sea Farms and pick up a few dozen for an appetizer.

orca and calf in the san juan islands - sail the san juans

We set course for Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island. This is a well protected spot with some farms owned by islanders. We are just a few miles from the Canada/U.S. border and we will see the large ships heading up Boundary Pass for Vancouver and beyond.  There are some great hiking trails to a beautiful lighthouse, a one-room schoolhouse, and to a viewpoint of Vancouver Island and the Olympic mountains. You might encounter a herd of wild goats, deer or see a wild mink or even a family of otter!

Crabbing in San Juan Islands - Sail the San Juans

Day Four – Wednesday: Weigh anchor at Prevost and head for Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. If you join us for a sail in the early spring, we might stop off at colorful Yellow Island, and land the zodiac on the beach. Yellow Island is a little 11 acre gem managed by the Nature Conservancy that puts on the best wildflower show in the islands! Carpets of Yellow Island purple camas, red indian paintbrush, and western buttercups cover the island. All told, there are more than 50 species of wildflowers in one compact location.

Friday Harbor - sail the san juans cruises

Tonight you will eat out ashore in Friday Harbor to give the crew a break…we have some great recommendations we will share with you!

Jette and TailR kayaking in San Juan Islands

Cypress is another of our favorite islands as it has a remote, wild and rugged feel. There are at least four choices for hiking trails that vary from easy to difficult based on grade.

You now feel relaxed and pampered. Most of our guests are now friends, so saying goodbye is not easy for any of us. You have grown attached to your cabin and all the good naps you caught there in the afternoon.

Sorry, it is time to return you to the real world. So a little sad and yet very content, we chart our final leg back to Bellingham, sailing up Rosario Strait or Bellingham Channel. We should return by noon to our slip, weather and tides permitting.

My family and I had the most wonderful evening onboard the MV Discovery with Captain Ben!  The boat is absolutely beautiful, and Captain Ben and his crew were warm, knowledgeable and gave us a fabulous tour of Seattle.  There were seven of us aboard, though we easily could have fit twice that.

“A Seattle must-do.  We will absolutely be back next year!”

Yelp Review

When I remember magical holiday events, chartering the MV Discovery for the evening with old friends will clearly remain at the top. This exquisite wood yacht brought us all back to another era as we followed the Christmas ships on Lake Washington. Captain Ben Swanson was very accommodating and friendly to everyone, Chef Alisa created a beautiful and delicious feast for us, and everyone had a wonderful evening.

“I would highly recommend chartering this yacht for any special event.”

The Best Ways to Get From Seattle to the San Juan Islands

by Lakedale | Sep 15, 2022 | Blog , Explore San Juan Island | 0 comments

Roche Harbor from the air

There’s never a bad time to visit the San Juan Islands. And as we wrote about in our guide to the best activities on San Juan Island , our archipelago offers a little something for everyone—from fishing excursions sure to entice any angler to exceptional dining and shopping that make it hard to head home.

While you won’t want to leave (and really, why should you?), we’re also here to remind you that traveling from Seattle to the islands is a breeze. Whether you’re a Seattleite through and through or just in town for a short stay, consider these travel tips when planning your visit to the San Juan Islands. (Seriously—future you will thank us later.)

Ferry at night in the San Juan Islands

How do I travel by ferry?

One of the most common ways to get to the San Juan Islands is by ferry. Not only are these beautiful boats easy on your budget, but they also run year-round and offer multiple trips each day to and from San Juan Island, Lopez Island, Orcas Island, and Shaw Island. Make a reservation regardless of when you’re traveling. There are intricacies to when you can reserve your ride, so read up on the WSDOT website and put time in your calendar to remind yourself to book your spot. Trust us on that one.

Head north to Anacortes, Washington, and board a Washington State Ferry to get on your way. Expect the ferry ride to take a little over an hour—the perfect amount of time to settle in with a good book, enjoy the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you, or sneak in a catnap.

It’s worth noting that, while the ferry ride itself clocks in at an hour, traveling from Seattle to the ferry terminal in Anacortes will add an additional two hours to your itinerary, depending on traffic. Plan accordingly!

Pro tip: If you’re walking onto the ferry, arrive at the terminal 15-30 minutes before departure for a stress-free check-in experience. You may need to wait several hours to get on a ferry in the summer months, so make sure you have plenty of snacks, and dress in layers.

How much does the Washington State Ferry cost?

The short answer is “it depends.” Fares for ferry rides to and from the San Juan Islands are based on several factors, including the time of the year, day of the week, age of the passengers, and final destination. For a round-trip, walk-on ferry ride from Anacortes to the islands, expect to pay anywhere from $8-15 per person.

Make your trip planning easy-peasy by visiting the Washington State Ferry website for up-to-date pricing and information, including a handy fare calculator. Check it out !

San Juan Clipper catamaran ferry

Is there a ferry that departs directly from Seattle?

If driving from Seattle to the Anacortes terminal isn’t your jam, consider hopping on the San Juan Clipper for a four-hour journey through the Salish Sea. This ferry runs from April through October and takes passengers from Pier 69 in Seattle to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

While the San Juan Clipper can be a great option—especially for day-trippers—add it to your future travel plans instead. This route is unavailable in 2023, but our fingers are crossed for its speedy return.

Cars at front of ferry on way to Friday Harbor

Are the San Juan Islands accessible by vehicle?

Yes, but not in the same way that some other Pacific Northwest favorites are (Whidbey Island and Bainbridge Island, to name a few). In order to bring your vehicle to the San Juan Islands, you’ll need a reservation to drive it onto a Washington State Ferry. The Washington State Department of Transportation has the lowdown on all things vehicle reservations, including the key dates you need to know and an overview of what you should bring with on travel day.

But, latecomers beware: Vehicle reservation holders who check in less than 30 minutes before sailing time will travel stand-by. Take the stress level down a notch and arrive 45-60 minutes in advance of your sailing reservation. Whether you’ll walk or drive onto the ferry, work some additional time into your schedule to accommodate unforeseen circumstances or delays. After that, settle in and enjoy the ride!

passenger getting on Kenmore Air float plane in Friday Harbor

Can I take a plane to the San Juan Islands?

Of course! Air travel from Seattle to the San Juan Islands is the quickest and easiest way to get here. A commercial flight from Seattle to Friday Harbor takes less than an hour, meaning you’ll be able to hit the ground running and can make the most out of your visit to the island. For a truly unforgettable experience, adventuresome travelers might also consider chartering a seaplane to the San Juan Islands.

To view flight schedules and pricing, check out the airlines that serve the islands: Friday Harbor Seaplanes , Kenmore Air , Point to Point Air , San Juan Airlines , and Westwind Aviation .

And speaking of Kenmore Air…have you heard the news that has us on cloud nine? In addition to service from Seattle, Kenmore Air now offers 25-minute express flights from suburban Everett to the San Juan Islands. Making these stunning islands more accessible to more people? We love to see it.

bike riding on San Juan Island

What if I only have time for a day trip to the islands?

While we’ll always root for you to extend your island stay, we understand that you have other commitments, too. If your PTO balance has run dry, take these day trip travel hacks to heart:

  • Leave your car on land. To maximize your time on the island, take a flight or park at the Anacortes terminal and walk onto the ferry. (Terminal parking starts at $13 during peak season—May through September.) From bikes and mopeds to trolleys and rental cars, there is no shortage of transportation options available once you arrive on the islands.
  • Plan your interisland transportation. To hop islands in a snap, rely on an interisland ferry to get you where you need to go. Once again, the state’s Department of Transportation website has you covered with sailing schedules, maps, and fare information.
  • Map out your top five must-see or must-do experiences. It’s hard to fit everything into a one-day visit, so to reduce stress, we recommend listing the top things you want to see or experience during your trip to the San Juan Islands. Whether cozying up in a cute café is your vibe or embarking on a whale-watching tour will wet your adventure whistle, plan your day ahead of time. Need some inspo? Check out our San Juan Island recommendations and list of ten lesser-known attractions .

Be honest—how much will a trip to the San Juan Islands actually cost me?

Our crystal ball is a bit foggy on this one. There’s no one-size-fits-all way to experience the islands, so your travel expenses will vary. Given the rising costs of all the things (gas included), it’s difficult to pinpoint an exact price tag for your trip. That said, with ferry tickets starting at around $8 and flights beginning at roughly $150, your island getaway doesn’t have to break the bank.

Once you arrive in the San Juan Islands, there are plenty of free or low-cost ways to make memories that will give your Instagram followers serious FOMO. Whether you’re up for hiking, kayaking, sculpture park oohing and aahing , or a round of golf, the best part about your San Juan Islands getaway is that it’s yours .

10 Ways to Get from Seattle to the San Juan Islands

Kenmore Air Otter and Cattle Point Lighthouse

Though the quaint archipelago tucked within the Salish Sea is technically part of Washington State, it feels a bit like its own country. Heck, some of its rocky inlets are closer to Canada than they are to the American mainland. But the 172-plus islands in the Olympic Rainshadow don’t require a passport and are relatively easy to access — if you know what you’re doing.

The following outlines 10 ways to travel from Seattle to the San Juan Islands. But at its most primitive level, there are only two ways to get here: by boat or plane. The nature of being surrounded by water on all sides makes this remote destination exactly that, remote. That’s part of the charm, part of what keeps this paradise a destination worthy of visiting year-round.

And the great news is, whether you’re flying from Boeing Field to Friday Harbor , catching a seaplane from Lake Union to Roche Harbor , or hopping on a 25-minute flight from Paine Field to Orcas Island — the views are endless and check-in is a breeze!

Seattle to San Juan Islands Travel Options

Landplane flights from seattle to the san juan islands, 1. airline & charter flights from boeing field in seattle.

There’s a small host of airlines that offer service between Boeing Field and the San Juan Islands — not the least of which is Kenmore Air. Depending on the airline, these wheeled plane flights are available on a regularly scheduled basis or a charter basis. These airlines include:

  • Kenmore Air
  • San Juan Airlines
  • Westwind Aviation (Currently operating under Avian Flight Center and offering charter flights from Bremerton)
  • Point to Point Air, LLC

2. Kenmore Air Express from Paine Field in Everett

The fastest way to get from Seattle to the San Juan Islands is a 25-minute commercial flight from Paine Field to either Eastsound Airport on Orcas Island or Friday Harbor Airport on San Juan Island. These quick and efficient flights come complimentary with stunning views of the region.

As a bonus, Paine Field offers an elite club vibe that’s easy to navigate and ultra-luxurious — thanks to its small size. Those flying in from out of country or state, will find Pain Field’s terminal a pleasant change of pace from traditional busy and impersonal airports. And those departing directly from Kenmore Air’s Paine Field terminal will discover the beauty of spacious parking just steps from check-in, a private terminal, and a breezy boarding process.

Seaplanes to the San Juan Islands

3. seaplane flights from lake washington.

Departing from Kenmore Air’s headquarters at the north end of Lake Washington , these 45-minute flights offer stunning scenic views and simple check-in. Here, picnic tables double as waiting areas during the summer months and passengers are treated to a first-hand look at Kenmore Air’s world-class maintenance department.

4. Seaplane Flights from Lake Union

Taking off from Lake Union , in the heart of downtown Seattle, this is arguably the most popular way to reach the San Juans. Flights are just 45 minutes and typically take off to the north, giving passengers a bird’s-eye view of Lake Union floating homes, Gas Works Park, and more

The flights are roughly 45 minutes, making this one of the fastest ways to travel between Seattle and the San Juan Islands. Two airlines offer service from Lake Union, including:

  • Seattle Seaplanes

5. Seaplane Flights from Renton

Operating from the Renton Seaplane Base at the southern tip of Lake Washington, Friday Harbor Seaplanes provides regularly scheduled service to the San Juan Islands.

Seattle to San Juan Islands Ferry Options

6. washington state ferry from anacortes.

Those looking to turn travel into the day’s activity will love the Washington State Ferry system. The Anacortes ferry dock is roughly a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Seattle — without traffic. Total sailing time is roughly an hour. But make sure you book your ferry reservations in advance or leave plenty of time to wait for the ferry. Securing a spot without a ferry reservation can be cumbersome.

Seattle to San Juan Islands Ferry FAQs

What’s the deal with ferry reservations .

The Washington State Ferry service releases reservations in three tiers:

  • Tier 1 – Released 1-2 months before the season begins for all sailings for that season. For vehicles over 30 feet, reservations are only released in the first Tier.
  • Tier 2 – Released 2 weeks before the departure date.
  • Tier 3 – Released 2 days before the departure date.

Can I just show up and try to score a spot?

You can. Spots are also available on a Stand-By basis, allowing those who want to drive without a reservation to snag any empty space that’s available.

Can I walk onto the ferry?

Definitely. Walk-ons are welcome at the Anacortes Ferry. But keep in mind, you need to get to Anacortes. There are some bus routes that offer service from Seattle to Anacortes. But if you choose to drive, you’ll need to find parking near the Anacortes Ferry Terminal.

Can I take my bike onto the ferry?

Like walking on, there’s nearly always room for bike passengers who want to sail from Anacortes to the San Juan Islands. But remember, the fastest bike route from Seattle to Anacortes is just shy of 100 miles and takes the average cyclist 8.5 hours. You’ll want to leave plenty of time to reach your ferry.

Passenger Ferries to the San Juan Islands (Water Taxis)

7. victoria clipper ferry from seattle to san juan islands (currently suspended).

PLEASE NOTE: The San Juan Clipper suspended service to San Juan Island in 2023.

Departing from Pier 69, located in downtown Seattle along Elliot Bay, the San Juan Clipper offered service from Seattle to San Juan Island aboard their high-speed passenger ferries. The Clipper’s San Juan service was known as The San Juan Clipper or the FRS Clipper, delivering passengers to the Friday Harbor Marina. This was a seasonal service, offered mid-May through October.

8. Puget Sound Express

Puget Sound Express is primarily a tour company that offers tours of the San Juan Islands based out of Port Townsend. This fabulous water-based tour company also offers one-way passenger ferry service between Port Townsend to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

Known as the official Washington state ferry route, travel time to the island is variable. It depends on the boat’s departure time and the wildlife encountered while at sea.

9. Island Express Charters

Looking to travel between islands? Island Express Charters offers a water taxi service throughout the San Juan Islands. They also offer private charters, including departure from their home port at Skyline Marina in Anacortes, Washington.

10. Outer Island Excursions Water Taxi

This San Juan Islands passenger-only water taxi provides transportation throughout the San Juan Islands. With vessels that range from 18 to 56 feet, they can take groups as small as two and as large as 200 to a wide variety of beaches and marinas.

Those looking to transport kayaks, camping gear, tools, and construction materials will also be pleasantly surprised by Outer Island Excursion’s flexibility and capability.

Boating to the San Juan Islands

11. driving or sailing your boat from seattle to the san juans.

Boating in the San Juan Islands has long been a beloved pastime for many visitors. Throughout the year, both the marinas and protected coves are frequented by boaters enjoying the Salish Sea.

Depending on your timeline, this can be an exceptionally fun way to reach the islands and bring your lodging with you. Many of the marinas offer amenities that make traveling by boat even more enjoyable, such as bathrooms, showers, laundromats, and fully stocked convenience stores.

And for those who use their boat as a second home, boating to the San Juan Islands and then flying back and forth can be a great way to get even more island time.

Seattle to San Juan Islands FAQ

Do i need a passport to travel to the san juan islands.

No passports are necessary to travel from Seattle to the San Juan Islands. However, depending on your mode of transportation, you may be required to provide a valid ID.

Is going to the San Juan Islands worth it?

We may be biased, but we certainly think any chance to visit the San Juan Islands is worth it. With a plethora of sunshine-filled days, sea-to-table cuisine, and fabulous island hikes, the islands are truly a slice of paradise.

Do I need a car on San Juan Island, Orcas Island or Lopez Island?

While the islands are a very friendly place and there are things to do on-island that don’t require a car ( like our list of 12 car-free things to do in Friday Harbor ), a car can make it easier to explore each island in its entirety.

If you arrive on island without a car, both San Juan Island and Orcas Island have rental agencies:

Orcas Island Shuttle

This downhome car rental agency delivers cars directly to the location of your choice (on Orcas). Just be sure to call with as much notice as possible. Especially during the summer months, rentals can be hard to come by.

M&W Auto

Tucked at the end of the Friday Harbor Airport runway, M&W Auto is a used car dealer and rental car agency. Incredibly friendly and helpful, they work hard to be flexible with arrival and departure times.

Can I rent a bike on the island?

Definitely. All three primary islands — San Juan Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island — have bike rental shops. Though seasonal hours may apply. Alternatively, on San Juan Island you may want to look into renting a scoot coupe or moped from Susie’s Mopeds.

4 Days Island Hopping in Washington’s San Juan Islands

Just 90 miles north of Seattle’s coast, the San Juan Islands archipelago is an incredible destination for adventure with great food, and relaxation right within Washington State. With over 100 islands this is the place to go when you’re ready to escape the real world in favor of sea kayaking with orca whales and biking forest trails that wind along the majestic coastline.

These islands are famous for their abundant wildlife, rocky beaches, evergreen forests, and scenic coastal landscapes — all the ingredients for an amazing place to explore. But the history and culture of the islands is just as alluring!

Great museums, galleries, lighthouses, and local shops and restaurants on the islands are perfect for a low-key trip with plenty of adventure tossed in.

The Best 4-Day Itinerary for the San Juan Islands

Get a taste of what the islands have to offer with a 4-day trip, focusing on the “main” islands for tourists: San Juan Island, Shaw Island, Orcas Island, and Lopez Island. Don’t worry — these places are far from touristy and some areas still feel completely off the beaten path.

Here’s a 4-day itinerary for the San Juan Islands, created by our own Alice Ford during her recent trip, to explore Washington’s own island oasis!

  • Day 1: Friday Harbour, SJI National Historical Park , & Lime Kiln Point State Park
  • Day 2: SJI English Camp, sculpture park & sunset kayak tour
  • Day 3: Shaw Island ferry & Orcas Island adventures
  • Day 4: Orcas Island Moran & Obstruction Pass state parks
  • Optional add-on: Lopez Island

May through September is the best time to take advantage of this San Juan Islands itinerary . You’ll arrive to moderate weather and ensure the best attractions are open! Check out Alice’s island-hopping adventure in the San Juan Islands below.

Day 1: Explore Friday Harbour & San Juan Island Parks

Drive from Seattle to Anacortes, the coastal gateway to the San Juan Islands. Hop on the ferry to cross the Rosario Strait (or book a seaplane from Seattle) to arrive on San Juan Island to begin the trip of a lifetime!

Check out Market Chef for lunch with a great in-house, locally-sourced deli (try the Spicy Italian or My Sister’s Favorite Sandwich) and a market if you’d rather bring a picnic to Cattle Point.

San Juan Island is a history, art, and food hotspot nestled amid gorgeous and rugged Pacific Coast scenery. Conservation and preservation is a major focus here, with San Juan County being the first designated Leave No Trace area in the U.S.

Friday Harbour

Friday Harbour is such a gem to get started in. The ferry will bring you to this little town, which is absolutely hopping with local restaurants, shops, and accommodations. Grab a bite and if you’re up for it, take the scenic drive around the island to get your bearings and take in some of the awe-inspiring views.

Here are some recommendations in Friday Harbour:

  • San Juan Island Sea Salt
  • San Juan Islands Museum of Art
  • The Whale Museum
  • Waterworks Gallery

If you’re into whale watching, you have to check out The Whale Museum to see massive orca skeletons, use hydrophones to hear whale calls underwater, learn about local and transient pods, and get a commemorative orca trading card!

Next up is the Cattle Point Interpretive Area, where you can see the Cattle Point Lighthouse nearby and walk along the rugged beach with jaw-dropping views of the Cascade and Olympic Mountains or head out on a short hiking trail.

San Juan National Historical Park

Continue on to the southeastern side of the island and visit the San Juan National Historical Park (NHP) American Camp. This area brings you into the island’s history with old military buildings, beautiful coastal trails, and sprawling prairies where wildlife like eagles, deer, red foxes, and rabbits hang out.

Learn about the introduction of foxes and rabbits to the island in the late 1800s and early 1900s (and the importance of not feeding these animals).

Lime Kiln Point State Park & San Juan County Park

Stop and see the Lime Kiln Lighthouse on the western end of the island, built in 1919 and still in operation as a navigational beacon. Climb the narrow staircase up to the very top in Lime Kiln Point State Park to enjoy the view and try to spot orcas! There’s a reason this place is also called Whale Watch Park.

The 36-acre park has tons to do and see, from hiking and paddleboard rentals to scuba diving and kayaking. Stroll the rocky beach to look for porpoises, otters, sea lions, and seals, paying special attention to the magnificent orca, minke, and gray whales (spring through fall is best).

Stop by the Lime Kiln Point Interpretive Center, a former Coast Guard garage, to bone up on whale facts and the park’s history as a lime mine. There’s a short interpretive trail that leads to nice views!

Situated further north on the island’s western side, San Juan County Park is known for its jagged bluffs and rocky beaches overlooking the Haro Strait — it’s a great spot for a quick stroll and some whale-watching with pods of orcas swimming right through.

For a list of great tours on the island check out the list.

Hotel Check-In and Dinner

Back in Friday Harbour, check in at your hotel (Alice recommends Cannery Inn) before grabbing dinner at the rustic Duck Soup, Friday Harbour House Restaurant, or vegan Mike’s Cafe and Wine Bar.

Day 2: NHP English Camp, Sculpture Park & Sunset Kayak Tour

Fuel up with coffee and breakfast at Salty Fox Coffee in Friday Harbour before driving to the northwestern San Juan National Historical Park English Camp .

You’ll be able to see an old 19th-century settlement, complete with historic buildings, a boat dock, and exhibits. There are hiking trails to explore the wooded areas and rocky shoreline, so take your time enjoying the scenic views and history that surrounds this part of the island.

San Juan Islands Sculpture Park

The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is great to squeeze in next, though you could easily spend an entire afternoon in this 20-acre park housing 150+ sculptures of wildlife, historic events, and contemporary pieces.

Walk the path to see amazing sculptures that vary from small to massive, contrasting with the natural surroundings. About 90 artists from the Pacific Northwest contribute to the park , displaying their works for sale.

Sunset Kayak Tour

Before the sun sets, drive back to the San Juan County Park to take a sunset kayak tour with Discovery Sea Kayaks (book in advance) . Paddle out to the lighthouse and watch the dazzling sunset from your kayak, taking in the serenity of the sea with some truly phenomenal photo ops.

Local Shops & Dinner

There are some great little shops in Friday Harbour, so after your kayak tour, head back into town and do some shopping and browsing! Madrone Cellars & Cider, Arctic Raven Gallery, and Griffin Bay Books are all cool places to explore tonight before dinner.

Try dining at a local spot like Downriggers tonight. Get some rest for your ferry trips to Shaw Island and Orcas Island tomorrow!

Day 3: Shaw Island & Orcas Island Adventures

Today, you’ll be exploring Shaw and Orcas islands with stops like a rustic general store, the bustling town of Eastsound, and hiking trails at Turtleback Mountain Preserve.

Shaw Island Walk & General Store

Check out from your hotel and board the ferry on foot to Shaw Island from Friday Harbour for a rejuvenating 5-mile walk (under 2 hours) through the park’s unspoiled landscapes and quaint town. Walk from the ferry dock to Blind Bay Road and enjoy the water views with roadside art.

Turn left onto Reef Net Bay Road to reach Shaw County Park for excellent access to the wild beach. Take a stroll down the shore and continue back on the road, passing through a forested Graham Preserve on your way back to Blind Bay Road.

At the Shaw General Store , you can grab coffee and supplies for an organic picnic lunch to eat by the ferry dock with lots of local arts and crafts, or wait and eat on Orcas Island. Board the ferry to Orcas Island (check times to make sure you can squeeze all your stops in today!) and check into your hotel. Consider the Village Inn at Eastsound.

Eastsound, Orcas Island

You’re going to love Orcas Island — great hiking and an absolutely fantastic farm-to-table food scene. New Leaf Cafe in Eastsound is perfect for lunch, housed in a historic inn with a view, serving “tide-to-table” options, classic and vegetarian dishes, and cocktails.

Drive the Orcas Island Scenic Byway toward the west coast to visit local spots that make this island special. Don’t miss the whimsical Orcas Island Pottery (the oldest pottery shop in the PNW, and the artists live and work here).

Continue south to hike Turtleback Mountain Preserve’s Ship Peak Loop . It’s 3 miles and leads through the forest to the most incredible views of the island and coast! Stop by the Orcas Island Winery on the way out for an indoor/outdoor tasting and refreshments (Thursday through Sunday) at the base of Turtleback Mountain.

Tuck in early or spend a little time exploring the charming shops and local museums in Eastsound.

Day 4: Moran State Park & Obstruction Pass State Park

Start the day by checking out of your hotel and taking the Orcas Island Scenic Byway toward the eastern side of the island to reach Moran State Park. There’s a $10 parking fee (unless you have a Discovery Pass).

Moran State Park & Mt. Constitution

This park is the home of the illustrious Mt. Constitution . This is the highest point in the San Juan Islands) capped with a 12th-century replica watchtower that offers stunning panoramic views of the Cascade range and surrounding islands.

A road leads to the summit, but there are multiple trails to the summit beginning from Cold Springs, Mountain Lake, and the West Boundary. The hike is challenging, but rewarding with those awesome views if you’re lucky enough to avoid the fog!

If you’re not up for summiting the mountain, the park has 30+ miles of trails to hike, some leading to waterfalls like the Cascade Waterfall through beautiful forest and lakefront settings.

Back on the road south, you’ll pass Orcas Island Artworks — the perfect place to dive into the local culture and see what 45+ talented artists are creating in this former strawberry packing plant. From jewelry to ceramics, there’s plenty to browse and a cafe, Lascaux, where you can grab lunch!

Obstruction Pass State Park

Obstruction Pass State Park is just a few minutes away on the southeastern coast. Moran is bigger and more popular, but this secluded park’s quiet beauty is soul-stirring. The park is named for the neighboring Obstruction Island and is home to the longest beach on Orcas.

A short 0.5-mile trail winds through a low forest to the bluffs overlooking the jewel-toned waters, then follows down to the beach.

This sprawling shoreline is almost mystical with its crescent shape and marble-like rainbow-colored pebbles, shaped and worn over eons by the ocean’s persistence. Madrone trees miraculously grow from the rugged bluffs, giving you a spectacular space to reflect, enjoy the views, and relax.

Head back to Eastsound for dinner at Matia Kitchen for a delicious meal prepared with locally-sourced ingredients — this place pulls out all the stops. I can’t think of a better place to enjoy your last dinner on Orcas Island — until your next visit, of course!

Optional Add-On: Lopez Island

If you have an extra day, take the ferry to Lopez Island from Orcas in the morning. Spend the day on a whale-watching tour or sea kayaking , rent bikes to ride around the scenic island, or hike in beautiful Spencer Spit State Park or Upright Head Preserve.

Experience the Wild Beauty of the San Juan Islands

The beauty of San Juan, Shaw, Orcas, and Lopez island probably won’t surprise you — it’s what they’re known for. But the vibrant community spirit you’ll find in the art, locally-sourced food, and parks around the islands is enough to make this destination memorable for even the most seasoned traveler!

If you can’t get enough of ocean and mountain views, forested trails, and rugged coastal charm, start planning your escape to the San Juan Islands.

What happens to a retired WA ferry? Elwha, Klahowya about to find out

seattle boat tours san juan islands

On Monday, starting around 9:30 a.m., the Elwha and Klahowya will move through the waters of Puget Sound for the last time.

To the Klahowya, we thank you for your long service. And to the Elwha, we say: Watch out for those rocks. And that pier. The dock, too.

These two old Washington State Ferries vessels were sold recently for $100,000 each to Nelson Armas, an Ecuadorian businessman who is towing the boats to a “clean, green” steel mill in his South American country. There, according to WSF, the steel company Adelca will handle the boat “recycling.”

In other words, as the state struggles to maintain service due to a lack of new ferries, these retired boats will be cut up, their steel melted down for reuse.

From the golden shores of the Evergreen State to the rusted scrap heap of history. It’s an ignominious, if common, ending for state ferries, which often supply decades of service to the waterborne commuters of the lower Salish Sea.

“The truth is, very few ferries find a second life after they’re retired,” Steven Pickens, a historian of Puget Sound ferries and author of numerous books on the subject, said in an email.

The Illahee, Klickitat, Nisqually and Quinault were all scrapped in Ensenada, Mexico, between 2009 and 2011. The Rhododendron is moored in British Columbia’s Fanny Bay, used as a floating warehouse and processing boat. The Olympic is closer to home, in Pierce County, “half torn apart on the beach at Ketron Island,” and the Evergreen State is up in Bellingham, “waiting for some sort of revitalization,” Pickens said.

The Chinook and Snohomish, both passenger-only boats, are still in service in California’s Bay Area and now known as the Golden Gate and Napa. The Tyee, which started life as the Glacier Express doing Alaskan tours before WSF bought it, is back in Alaska doing tours as the Glacier Express.

Finally, the Skagit sank off the coast of the Tanzanian archipelago Zanzibar, killing more than 100 people on board . Following that 2012 tragedy , the Tanzanian government pulled another former WSF boat, the Kalama, from service. Then the Kalama “vanished,” Pickens said, and was “last pinged on the global GPS” in January 2018 off Anjouan Island, between the continent and Madagascar.

The Elwha and Klahowya might wish for such adventure instead of the maw of a scrapping facility. But for the Superclass Elwha, which is a decade younger than its scrap-bound mate, the past is much more dramatic than its future. It very well may go down as the state’s most famous ferry.

“Or perhaps the most notorious,” as Pickens wrote on his website evergreenfleet.com .

The 2,000-passenger, 144-car Elwha was launched in December 1967 and served the Seattle-Bainbridge route for its first four years. Through the 1970s, it was a backup vessel for the fleet.

The 1980s were its time to shine — or at least make some headlines — after it was assigned to the interisland route connecting Anacortes to Lopez, Shaw, Orcas and San Juan islands.

On Oct. 2, 1983, the Elwha had just departed Anacortes with Capt. Billy Fittro at the helm. But the veteran pilot, who had more than three decades of experience, wasn’t alone in the wheelhouse. Peggy Warrack, a resident of Grindstone Harbor on Orcas and a passenger Fittro had taken a shine to, was there with him.

Perhaps Fittro should’ve taken a cue from the harbor’s name, but after a stop at Lopez, he steered the 382-foot Elwha on an unsanctioned tangent so Warrack could see her house. A shallow reef tore into the boat’s hull. Witnesses described seeing the vessel rise 3 or 4 feet out of the water.

Fittro pushed on. He made it to Shaw and, finally, to Orcas, where it did a “360 doughnut out there in the middle of the channel,” a witness told The Seattle Times. At Orcas, officials finally deemed the boat unsafe.

The Elwha was blamed at first, a failed steering component, but within a week, Fittro was fingered as the true culprit and lost his job. So did WSF chief Nick Tracey.

The collision caused $250,000 in damage to the Elwha, but the incident did provide some entertainment for islanders.

The Island City Jazz Band made the front page of The Seattle Times on Nov. 9, 1983, for its Dixieland “toe-tapping spoof” of the incident. The song: “Elwha on the Rocks.”

In Friday Harbor, the Electric Company Tavern concocted a new drink called the Elwha, made of equal parts Myers’s Rum Cream liqueur and Myers’s Rum. “It was served, of course, on the rocks,” according to a 2021 article in The Journal of the San Juan Islands.

By 1989, the Washington State Board on Geographic Names agreed to change the official name of the reef to Elwha Rock.

But the boat wasn’t done yet.

In December 1990, hurricane-force winds raced through Puget Sound. The Elwha was out of service for regular maintenance at the time and broke free of its moorings. For hours, it slammed into the concrete pier, again and again, before it was finally cut adrift. The boat was out of service for another year as repairs were made.

In September 1999, a computer malfunction led the Elwha, laden with 158 passengers and 37 cars, to ram into the Orcas dock.

“I was standing on the lawn that overlooks the ferry landing, setting up for a party, when I heard the ferry honking, sounding its foghorn,” Patty Cunningham, who worked at the Orcas Hotel, told The Seattle Times . “People at the dock were yelling for everybody to get off the dock. … Then, it just rammed the dock, and the pilings started cracking.”

The Elwha’s story still had more chapters to it, but by 2019, the boat was deemed too costly to keep afloat. That July, while in dry dock on Lake Union , inspectors found extensive steel corrosion estimated to cost $25 million to repair. Another $10 million was needed to fix the boat’s auto deck. Seeing the bill, the Legislature decided not to repair the boat , sealing its fate.

“I will not be sorry to see the Elwha go. In fact I’d probably give it a kick on the way out if I could,” Pickens said in an email. “I’ll miss the Klahowya.”

The Evergreen State-class Klahowya is a decade older than the Elwha and had a more distinguished, if not as exciting, tenure.

It arrived at Vashon Island and entered service Dec. 9, 1958. For 56 years, “with very rare exception,” Pickens said, the 800-passenger, 87-car boat ran one route: the triangle route connecting Southworth, Fauntleroy and Vashon.

The Klahowya was on the triangle route from its first day in 1958 to summer 2014, a state ferry record for the longest time that one boat served a specific route, besting the Quinault’s three-decade run on the same route.

In 2014, the Klahowya was moved to the San Juan Islands interisland route, where the boat’s nearly 60 years of continuous service began to show.

Despite a refurbishment in 1995 — which gave it “modern airline-style seats” in blue, tan and light brown — on Jan. 10, 2017, the boat was taken out of service and moved to the state’s Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility.

It has sat there ever since. Until Monday, when the open seas — and its fate — call.
