It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.

Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.

Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.

At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

I think when you travel as much as I have, I don’t want to say I’m more humble, but I think you become aware of how other people live, how hard their lives are, how big the world is.

I have seen firsthand that things can turn on a dime. Tremendously awful, evil things happen to nice people all the time. I have seen people, again and again, relentlessly grinding under the wheel of poverty or oppression. At the same time, I see random acts of kindness and pride in the most outrageous and most unexpected circumstances. I am grateful. I understand that I am very privileged to see what I am seeing, even when it hurts. I think that people, particularly Americans, need to be more inspired to travel and be adventurous with the things they eat. And if they are curious about the world and willing to walk in somebody else’s shoes—that is surely a good thing.

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.

Who wouldn’t travel, if they could? It’s unthinkable to me. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy different, new sensations, especially when the world is filled with so much great stuff? I like new things. I like to feel good. I like learning about stuff. It makes me happy. I like being wrong about stuff.

If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.

Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

I’ve got another one for you! This is one of my favourite quotes, originally in Spanish: “Y por ahi recorro, mirando, mirando, sin aliento,” which roughly translates to, “And there I travel, looking, looking, breathlessly.” It always fills me with a sense of wanderlust. It’s from one of Carlos Castaneda’s Don Juan books (I’m afraid I forget which one exactly!)

I’ve never heard it but love it!! I can understand why it fills you with a sense of wanderlust, it does the same for me 🤩 Thank you for sharing!

I am forever obsessed with this beautiful travel quote–the longer and farther we travel, the more I appreciate just how smitten I am with this incredible world of ours.

While this is one of the most famous travel quotes out there, it’s as controversial as it is inspiring: not everyone has the opportunity to travel, after all, and I certainly don’t believe that you  have  to travel to be a well-rounded person.

The reality of travel–especially long-term travel like what we have been experiencing for nearly 5 years as of the time that I’m updating this travel quotes blog post–is often stressful and physically uncomfortable, but so far, it has always been worth it.

This quote is so impactful because, on the one hand, fear keeps us from going on adventures. On the other hand, we fear wasting our time on this planet without creating memories.

We strongly agree with the famous travel writer. I traveled on a shoestring, and I still made some fantastic memories.

That time, I went to London for the first time and shared a hostel room with nine of my friends. Or that time, I couch-surfed with a friend from Erasmus in Prague. Those trips have created some of the best memories.

Many people fear the unknown, but when you trust your gut and follow your heart, it will reward you.

I love this quote because I also love books, and I love reading while traveling. Moreover, what I usually do is read a book about the country I travel to, or written by a local writer.

I once had this quote printed and glued on my desk. It kept me motivated and reminded me why I did the work I did.

All you have to do is build up the courage to make that first step. And all the other will follow. Once you start traveling, you cannot stop.

I’ve once seen this written on a sign on a beautiful Greek island . And whenever I read it, my mind flies to that yellow sand and turquoise water.

When you travel, try to make the best out of your trip. Step outside of the beaten path and get to understand the place you visit and its people.

This makes me remember that one time we got lost in a Vietnamese jungle, trying to reach the beach in the middle of the night.

Be curious about your fellow travelers. Meet the locals and learn about their normal lives.

For me, that’s one of the most inspirational quotes for traveling. The best way to have a personal idea is to go and see it yourself.

Maybe that’s why we are constantly on the move. From living in Hong Kong to moving to South Korea, traveling extensively in Germany and Italy, we did it all.

Finally, in today’s world and society, where it is more important what you have than what you have done, be different. Firstly, invest in your hobbies and the things that you love. Secondly, make time to travel. Finally, go there with all your heart and with your eyes wide open.
