It’s awesome game that you would play as a kid, on your moms phone. For me I played the original and I was rejoiced that there was a second one. I honestly hope more people get this game, just because the developers deserve it. Thank you!

Old and new unite!

Dear Ski Safaris, I will always love you and yet I really miss the scene/world with the red panda from the first game. The cherry blossoms would float off the trees as we skied by! Please make this world again. While SS 2 has more background options and I’m currently loving the moon I don’t know what all the differences are as compared to Penguin Peaks for example. What does getting zapped do? SS 2 features I love include selfies with Yeti, more clothing options and of course, Evana!! Thanks for making a female character for this game. Honestly I would pay for a newer version that included the red panda and cherry blossom world. That’s how much I miss it. Sending love and appreciation for this game!!

Why does the avalanche keep catching me.

The avalanche will always catch you eventually. But try these tips to travel faster:

• Backflip: You get a speed boost when you land a backflip.
• Coin Chains: You get a speed boost when you collect a whole line of coins.
• Tricks: You get a speed boost if you perform 3 swipe tricks in the air.
• Invulnerability: While you have a speed boost, you can smash through rocks.
• Animals: You move faster when riding animals. Try to stay on them!
• Get Up Faster: When you fall over, tap repeatedly to get up faster.

Why should I use swipe tricks?

Tricks give you extra points. They also give you a speed boost if you chain 3 in the air. Plus, they look great!

To perform a trick, swipe in a direction (up, down, left or right). Most animals and vehicles can do 4 different tricks.

Got any advanced tips for swipe tricks?

Certainly! Check these out:

• Combine tricks and backflips by continuing to hold your finger down at the end of the swipe.
• Use tricks to bypass animals. If you don't want to ride that Yeti, just perform a trick as you go past.
• Some tricks actually affect your movement. Try swiping upward on skis or downward on a sliding Yeti.
• If you can chain 9 tricks in the air, you get epic blue boosts for every trick thereafter.
• Try performing a right swipe trick on a running Yeti (Slam Dunk) just before you land on a Penguin. :)

Can I change the difficulty of the game?

Yes! Press the Difficulty button under Profile or Settings in the main menu. Enable Frantic Mode to get higher scores!

How do I switch between skis / snowboard?

Open the Shop from inside the cabin. Press the skis button on the left. Find a snowboard or skis and press Select.

How do I switch between Sven / Evana?

Open the Shop from inside the cabin. Press the costume button on the left. Find a Sven or Evana costume and press Select.

Challenge Tips

How do i "bury your head in snow".

Fall from a great height and land upside-down (on your head) on a flat area of snow.

How do I "Perform a tail grab trick on a snowboard"?

Swipe to the left while snowboarding.

How do I "Perform a 360 trick on skis"?

Swipe to the left or to the right while skiing.

How do I "Take a photo of a frozen mammoth"?

Smash through an ice bridge to find the mammoth, then press the photo button (top right of the screen) while riding on the ice cube.

How do I "Bypass a yeti using a penguin trick"?

Perform a swipe trick just before you touch the yeti. It's easiest just before you land on the yeti, or if you're flying past the yeti in the air. It can be tricky, so be patient!

How do I "Fly an eagle through a cave"?

Practise flying close to the ground on an eagle, then hope you find a short cave. This is the final challenge on Penguin Peaks - it's supposed to be difficult!

How do I "Double backflip and perform 2 tricks simultaneously"?

Fall from a great height and perform 2 backflips and 2 swipe tricks before you touch the ground.

How do i add friends.

To add friends, connect a social network account (Game Center / Facebook) and your friends who play Ski Safari 2 will automatically appear.

Alternatively, play a multiplayer Versus game together - they will automatically become your friend.

How do I share my save game across multiple devices?

• Connect the same social network account (Game Center / Facebook) on both devices.
• The second device will say you have an account conflict.
• Press Switch Player to resolve the conflict. Your second device will discard its save game and join up with your first device.
• Repeat for as many devices as you like.

Note: Choosing Switch Player cannot be undone!

How do I connect the game to Game Center / Facebook?

Open the Settings page from inside the cabin. Press the cloud button, then press Connect!

Why should I connect to a social network?

• Multiple Devices: Share your save game progress across all your devices.
• Cloud Backups: Keep your save game progress even if you uninstall / reinstall the game.
• Leaderboard Name: Without a social network, you will be "Sven" or "Evana" on the global leaderboards.

Can I add friends without a social network?

Yes! Just play a multiplayer game together.

Note: Both players must have an internet connection for this to work.

How do I see my friends' ranks and scores?

• Ranks: Open the Profile page from inside the cabin and press the friends button.
• Scores: Open the World Map, press the leaderboards button, then press the friends button.

I got an account conflict. Should I choose "Link to Me" or "Switch Player"?

Account conflicts happen when you try to connect a social network that is already connected to another player. Your options are:

My favorite game this year just got a major update

A recent update to Ski Safari makes my favorite game for 2012 even better.

Ski Safari (99 cents) challenges you to swoosh down a powdery mountain to avoid an avalanche, with animal friends and other vehicles along the way to help you with your escape. This distance game quickly became my go-to time-waster on both my iPhone and iPad, so when an update was announced last week, you can bet I was at the App Store immediately. The update adds a new mountain you can choose for your run, a new animal to help you along your way, and added achievements to keep you coming back for more.

Deviant Development didn't stray too far from the popular original and the controls remain the same: simply touch the screen to jump and touch-and-hold to do a back flip -- but it's still your timing that makes the difference in how far you'll get. The cartoonlike graphics make the game cute and easy on the eyes, and the update adds the all-new mountain to the mix, but you'll have a hard time noticing as you get farther into your run and need to be perfect in your execution.

The original story for Ski Safari is simple: an avalanche is coming and our hero is rousted from bed in his tiny cabin to start his journey skiing down an endless mountain. But with the latest update to Ski Safari, the folks at Defiant Development have added Howling Hills, a mountain with an entirely different theme, unique obstacles, and even a new animal to ride. You'll still know how far you've gone by passing distance signs along the way and you'll still need to avoid small rocks, large boulders, cabins, and other obstacles designed to let the avalanche catch up with you. But now you'll have more opportunities to stay alive with both a new animal and other fun perks.

Just like the earlier version, you'll still have the help of the animals that live on the mountain, with some new additions add to the fun. You'll still have penguins, yetis, eagles, and snowmobiles, but on Howling Hills you'll be able to ride a wolf. Unlike the yeti, the wolf doesn't allow you to slide, but he's a much faster runner, and you'll be able to taxi up to two penguins for more protection (compared with one on the yeti).

Passengers are important because whether on a yeti, wolf, or snowmobile, they serve a very important purpose. When you crash while riders are onboard, you'll lose the rider, but you'll continue to ride the yeti. Same with the snowmobile and wolf; having passengers serves as a shield that lets you keep your momentum and your score multiplier.

The achievement system was very well thought out in the earlier version of the game and you'll now have several more challenges with the new update. You'll be challenged to do things such as ride five penguins in a row or cloud-surf 10 times. Once completed, these challenges give you stars that unlock higher levels. The best thing about this system is you'll unlock levels that let you start from your cabin with one of the animals, giving you an early advantage. In the update to Ski Safari, this is even more important because you'll now be able to choose which animal you'll start with (from the ones you've earned so far).

To round out this major update, Ski Safari finally has a place to spend those coins you've been collecting all this time. Formerly mostly for show (and points), you'll now be able to buy new characters and outfits in the store, and also purchase gizmos (like a second chance jet pack), and power-ups (such as rockets, that add launchpads and a very fast ride down the mountain for a limited time). Fortunately, any money you've collected so far in the original game can be used in the shop, so people who have already played the game will probably be able to make purchases immediately.

In the end, the original Ski Safari was already an excellent time-waster that I would recommend wholeheartedly, but this update and the new features have definitely breathed new life into the game. Anyone who wants to try a very well-made escape game should download the latest version of Ski Safari.

Remembering SkiFree, and the Yeti that still haunts our dreams

The story of the 1991 game developed by a Microsoft employee in his spare time and the myths surrounding it.

Almost everyone who had a Windows PC in the 1990s played SkiFree, but almost none of us know its origins. It's a simple game: you ski down a hill while avoiding obstacles and a ravenous, unrelenting Yeti. SkiFree was a harbinger of endless runners, and the kind of games you play in brief spurts at random moments. I'd play it at stores like Staples and Office Depot after guessing the easy passwords on the demo PCs while my parents browsed. I raced downwards, doing triple backflips off rainbows, building up more and more speed to outrun death at the Yeti's hands. It never worked. SkiFree was the brainchild of Microsoft programmer Chris Pirih . He made it independently in his spare time, licensing it back to the company he worked for. They paid what he calls a "trivial one-time fee" and it became part of the Microsoft Entertainment Pack series, a bid to show that Windows was just as appropriate for homes and small businesses as it was for large enterprises. The first Microsoft Entertainment Pack was so successful that Microsoft went on to release three more, with SkiFree debuting in Microsoft Entertainment Pack 3.

The Microsoft Entertainment Packs included games so ubiquitous, like Minesweeper and FreeCell, it's hard to imagine early Windows without them. In addition to shipping with Microsoft Entertainment Pack 3, SkiFree was included on the Gamesampler, which came with packs of Verbatim brand floppy disks.

I remember several times in the 1990s Kellogg's advertised a 'Best of the Microsoft Entertainment Packs' disk that contained SkiFree on cereal boxes. My grandmother tried to surprise me with it by collecting box tops and sending in the cash for one of the games available from Kellogg's. Sadly, the disk I ended up getting didn't have SkiFree on it, which only made me want it more. 

Legend has it that there's a way to make a third Yeti appear, but I've never seen it.

Simple as it seems now, SkiFree was more mysterious than Solitaire or Minesweeper. I was always upset when the Yeti ate me and could never figure out how to avoid it. Naively, I thought if I just zig-zagged or went slower until the Yeti came out and then went faster I'd "save" up my speed and outrun it in a turbo-boost of lightning fast downhill skiing. In those days you couldn't throw a query into Google and instantly get an answer to a game-related problem, and the big forums were still in their infancy. When you needed help with a game you had to hope it was in a magazine or one of your friends knew what to do. Otherwise you were shit out of luck. Unfortunately, when I was a little girl, none of my friends cared about PC gaming (or computers in general), so getting a solution from them was out. Computer magazines were too busy talking about the latest "real" games, and didn't often pay a game like SkiFree any mind. Instead, I had to cruise the net at 28.8k searching for a solution to my SkiFree quandary—when I was allowed to, that is.

As long as SkiFree has been around, there have been people talking about it on the internet. It came with little in the way of documentation, other than showing you the controls for how to restart, turn, and pause at the start of your run. This led to plenty of theories on how to "beat" the game. Of course, there's no actual way to beat it—the course just loops over—but that didn't stop people from swearing that if you ski for an absurdly long time you'll somehow come to the end. Once players discovered the course looped, the win condition became outrunning the Yetis. After you pass the 2,000-meter mark, the Abominable Snow Monster starts chasing you and is absurdly fast. If you manage to keep away from it for a while a second one will spawn. Legend has it that there's a way to make a third Yeti appear, but I've never seen it. There are various theories on how to escape the Yeti, but the only one I know of that works is something of an internet meme at this point. As this XKCD comic shows, pressing "F" while playing SkiFree makes you go faster. Regardless of whether you use this trick, if you hit an obstacle you'll still get caught by the Yeti and die. Some diehard SkiFree players (yes, they do exist) consider using the speed boost cheating and insist that the only way outrunning the Yeti actually counts for anything is if you do it at regular speed.  

SkiFree doesn't have a story, but that hasn't stopped fans from writing SkiFree fan fiction that I suggest reading at your own risk. There's also the fantastic video of what the Yeti attack would look like if it happened in real life embedded above. After almost 30 years, this little game is still inspiring creativity. SkiFree eventually came to Game Boy Color and Mac, but the source code was lost in the mid-90s. Fortunately, in 2005 Chris Pirih found the source code again and updated the game to work on modern Windows computers. He's made it available on his website for free , so if you're looking to get nostalgic, or have never played before, you can grab it there. Who knows? You may even come back with some new theories on how exactly you can beat that pesky Yeti. Stranger things have happened.
