Why we love this tour: This tour offers a unique combination of live entertainment, great food, and stunning views of Waikiki’s skyline and the famous Diamond Head. We took this tour in February of this year and were completely blown away! 

The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the live music and Polynesian show were a nice touch. The crab, steak, and chicken dinner was one of our favorite things about this cruise since many tours we have been on do not offer this option.

Also, the ship is quite nice (for a sunset cruise), with plenty of room to accommodate larger groups. The best part of this tour was the sunset, a gorgeous pink-orange hue!

Cons:  Two hours didn’t seem like enough time, especially if you are one of the last tables to get your food. This happened to us (totally our fault since we were the last ones to board), and we were still eating during sunset. We had to leave our food to watch the sunset on the deck, which was a bummer, but we came back after and finished eating.

Tip:  Always pay attention to the check-in time. We showed up five minutes before departure and almost missed the boat! Most tours will ask you to check in 30 minutes before departure.

Why we love this tour: We booked this cruise for our anniversary, and it was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had! The staff onboard were incredibly friendly and accommodating. We went on a cloudy day, and the team compensated by trying to find whales and dolphins for us to watch.

Luckily enough, we saw some baby whales right before sunset. The pupu platter was also a great inclusion, and there was more than enough for everyone.

Cons: Not a lot of seats on the outside of the boat, so if you don’t get there early enough, you may have trouble finding a seat. Many people didn’t mind at all, since you were either taking photos or enjoying the gorgeous views. Also, we were okay with sitting on the floor. You are on a boat, after all!

Tip: This is a no-shoes activity, so wear easy-to-remove shoes like flip-flops. Shoes will be kept at the pier for the duration of the tour.

The BYOB Sunset Cruise is much cheaper than traditional sunset cruises. This 1.5-hour tour will take you around the coast of Waikiki, offering stunning views of the city and beautiful Hawaiian sunsets.

During our tour, we cruised for about 20 minutes toward Diamond Head and saw whales in the distance. The captain happily stopped for us to whale watch after someone spotted the whales. 

As we got near Diamond Head, a pod of 100 spinner dolphins followed our boat. 

We then made our way toward the sunset, but unfortunately, it was overcast, so we didn’t see the sunset over the horizon, but we still had a decent pink sky after the sunset. This was out of the crew’s control, so we can’t blame them.

Why we love this tour: Being on this boat reminded me of the movie Titanic , which was thrilling! I certainly loved taking photos with the gorgeous Diamond Head in the background. Talk about breathtaking! Plus, the crew was extremely friendly and accommodating.

Cons: This tour is BYOB, so be sure to bring drinks if you prefer an adult beverage.

• While these tours are sunset cruises, the tour companies cannot guarantee that you will see a perfect sunset due to weather conditions that are out of their control. After all, Mother Nature is unpredictable! We have been on sunset cruises multiple times in Oahu and only had this issue twice. We were still glad to see some dolphins and whales to compensate.
• Be sure to arrive early for check-in. These tours depart on time!
• If you get motion sickness, take the necessary medication prior. Always ask the crew for help if needed. The crew will also tell you the best place to sit if you are prone to motion sickness.
• Finally, don’t forget your camera! You’ll undoubtedly want to capture the beautiful sights you’ll experience!

The Holokai departs from the beach for all of our sails, so be sure to bring footwear that you can easily slip on and off! The specific beach for arrival and departure changes depending on the tides to ensure a safe boarding, so keep in mind that the departure spot may change and might not always be right outside the hotel. The walk down to the beach may take from 5 to 10 minutes, a maximum of 0.3 miles down to the boat.

Our snorkeling trips depart daily from Kewalo Basin Boat Harbor located conveniently adjacent to Waikiki Beach. Join us for a two hour snorkeling excursion to Waikiki’s Turtle Canyons.

Can you quickly run into this location to grab acai bowls? Trying to make a quick stop here in the morning before we go on a tour!

Yes! If you go up the ramp of the main entrance of the outrigger beach resort the Sunrise Shack will be the first shop on the left next to the escalator. Acai bowls will take 3-15 minutes depending on how busy it is.

Sunrise Shack was right across the street from our hotel while staying in Waikiki, and we went daily for açaí and coffee. Everything was great, but we especially loved the bullet coffee options. We got a large açaí bowl and an avocado toast. I regret starting my day here. The açaí tasted like a banana smoothie. The granola was chewy and seemed stale. The only fruit on top was banana. Other photos of the açaí bowls showed a little more to them. This was disappointing. There are a lot more options for good açaí bowls in the area! The portion size was good, though. The avocado toast was a thin layer of smashed avocado on a thin piece of bread. If you're hungry and actually looking for sustenance, I'd get something else.

Extremely disappointed with their açaí bowl. They should rename it to a banana bowl cause that's exactly what it tasted like. Aside from it being purple there was nothing "açaí" about it. The granola that they used was stale. The only fruit topping was also banana... Kai Fresh across the street from Moana Surfrider is 10x better. (Aside from the canned pineapple topping)

I came here a second time - since I like to give places a second chance. My first experience wasn't the best; it was an early morning where I ordered coffee. The coffee (drip) was pretty bad and we even threw half of it away. It was lukewarm and tasted terrible. Worse than the coffee though was the service (or lack of). The young gentleman who took my order was uninterested and unfriendly; he didn't even look at us, Granted this was early morning experience, I decided to come back another time. So, I returned another day ordering their standard Açaí Berry bowl. Service was much better, thankfully. The order tasted fine, but I just couldn't wrap my head around how it was $12 for a basic, small-sized order. Perhaps everything in Waikiki is high-priced, but for a non-açaí berry lover, I found it expensive. Overall, from my two experiences, I'd give this place a 2.5/5.

Açaí bowls after a swim is absolutely the best thing ever Shoutout to Sasha for being super patient with us and recommending us yummy flavors! * We got: - Blue Dream: 1st off the texture, literally a perfect smoothie. Smooth not icy or chunky. Just perfect. Banana, mango, coconut (banana dominant). So good!! 5/5 Stars - Tropical Bowl: pineapple, mango, banana (but more pineapple dominant) and icy. I haven't gotten a brain freeze in ages and received one from this. Still good! Pineapple was soo sweet 4/5 Stars Staff are super friendly and the pace of the store is quick which is good! We'll be back!!

Got the Ube smoothie and it went down perfect! Tasted more like açaí than Ube but it was refreshing and delicious nonetheless. Perfect as a companion in a walk around Waikiki, the beaches, or exploring. On the more expensive side for sure but the quality can be tasted. The associate was very sweet and the inside gave me cute hip hippie vibes! Will definitely be back the next time we are back.

I was SUPER excited to grab some smoothie bowls, and even more excited to try out The Sunrise Shack after seeing it on my social media feed for a while. I might've come on an off day... but the bowl I ordered wasn't that great and the service was just okay too. I ordered the Blue Dream Bowl, which was a spirulina, banana, and mango blend. The smoothie bowl that I received was super icey, to the point where I felt like I was just eating small shreds of ice every few bites lol. It kind of tasted like it melted, was frozen, and then blended again because of the texture and how it tasted watered down. While my first visit was a bit disappointing, I'd probably give it another chance and go for a classic acai bowl in the future! I was able to try a bite of this from my sister who ordered the acai bowl, and it tasted much better.

The Sunrise Shack - Waikiki is a Yelp advertiser.

It's located right in the heart of "Gower Gulch," near the corner of Gower Street and Sunset Boulevard) - hence the new name.

In 1972, Columbia left its Hollywood studios at Sunset & Gower (to save money) and moved over the hill to the San Fernando Valley, where they shared "Burbank Studios" with Warner Bros .

In 1978, Columbia Pictures made the Guinness Book of World Records by paying the highest price ever paid ($9,500,000.) for the rights to the Broadway stage hit " Annie " (which, as it turned out, wasn't the wisest investment in the studio's illustrious history.)

But eventually, Columbia was bought by Sony Entertainment of Japan, and they finally settled into the historic M-G-M Studios lot in Culver City, where they remain today, along with Sony's other label, TriStar Pictures.

Now that Columbia has moved on, the old studio lot they deserted isn't just sitting idly by. The re-named " Sunset-Gower Studios " no longer has a permanent film production company to call its own (hence the geographical name), but it keeps busy renting out its ample sound stages for assorted television and indie movie productions. The studio employees between 2,500 and 3,000 people, depending upon the time of year.

As of 2013, the three major TV productions on the lot are Showtime's hit serial killer, " Dexter " and ABC's " Private Practice " & " Scandal ".

But they also shoot " Let's Make a Deal " at Sunset-Gower, as well as a host of TV courtroom shows (i.e. " Judge Judy ", " Divorce Court ", etc.)

The public is invited to the live tapings of these sitcoms when they take place. To find out whether anything is taping there right now, call " Audiences Unlimited " (see separate page), and ask them if there are any free tickets to shows taped at Sunset-Gower. Then you can go inside to watch the TV taping, and walk into the studio which gave us " Gandhi ," " A Man For All Seasons " and " Ghostbusters ."

Update : In late 2008, Sunset-Gower studio was merged with KTLA studios (next door), to create the new Capital Studios . The lot will still be known as "Sunset Gower", while KTLA will be known as "Sunset-Bronson". Together, the new dual studio will cover 28 acres, with 23 sound stages and 700,000 square feet of office production space.

Sunset Luaus on the Bay  Tuesdays and Fridays | June 14 - August 30, 2024

A San Diego summer tradition on the shores of Mission Bay, the annual Sunset Luaus are a festive celebration of Polynesian food, music, and dances perfect for family and friends. Best Luau in California!

It is the best Luau I have attended in California. It made me feel as if I were actually in Hawaii. The dancers were highly skilled, professional, and beautiful, their whole program was outstanding. The food was abundant. They had a good variety of salads, entrees, and desserts. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole luau, the cost is well worth an evening of good food and great entertainment. I would love to return again next year.

Highly Recommend Private Luau Experience

I coordinated with the Catamaran to host a private luau and buffet for my company. We got a lot of positive feedback about the event from our guests at the end of the night - many of them were hoping we could do it again next year! I would highly recommend the Catamaran's sunset luau for large, private gatherings.

Audience Participation at the Luau!

The musicians were great, and the dancers' costumes were fantastic. The fire dancer was amazing. A very enjoyable evening of food and entertainment. One complimentary Mai Tai and Lei upon entry. The luau experience was worth it. Other folks at our table were returning because they really enjoyed their experience last year. The luau also has audience participation, which is great for young and old.

This property is beautiful

My granddaughter and I enjoyed the waterfall, fish, ducks, and parrots. The pool and hot tub were nice and open at night when we wanted to relax. We did the VIP luau and really enjoyed it. The food was amazing, the real flower leis were gorgeous, and the show was entertaining. We were also treated to a Mai Tai drink in a souvenir cup and a non-alcohol drink in a pineapple cup for my granddaughter. We made some special memories together.
