“I was born in 1989, reinvented for the first time in 2014, and a part of me was reclaimed in 2023 with the re-release of this album I love so dearly. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the magic you would sprinkle on my life for so long,” Swift wrote in a handwritten letter shared to Instagram after dropping 1989 (Taylor’s Version) .

Continued Swift, “This moment is a reflection of the woods we’ve wandered through and all this love between us still glowing in the darkest dark. I present to you, with gratitude and wild wonder, my version of 1989 . It’s been waiting for you.”

“For many Swifties, this is the re-recording we’ve been waiting for,” Rolling Stone ‘s Angie Martoccio writes in the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) review , dubbing Swift’s re-recorded album an instant classic. “Ever since she announced her genius plan to reclaim her masters in 2019, we’ve been shouting ‘We want our 1989 TV!’ And we’ve had to wait a while — for Midnights , for three other Taylor’s Versions to have their moment, and for Swift to embark on the second highest-grossing tour of all time and release it as a movie. After dropping the re-recordings of ‘Wildest Dreams’ and ‘This Love,’ the entire album is here, on the anniversary of the original. We can finally log off, get our red lipstick on, and play ‘Slut!’ in peace.”

The 1989 World Tour Live , a 2015 concert film by Taylor Swift is released on December 20, 2015, exclusively via Apple Music. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, the film follows the Sydney stop of the Australian leg of Swift's fourth headlining concert tour, The 1989 World Tour. The show, attended by 75,980 fans, is one of the most attended concerts ever to date for a solo artist, most notably, Swift .

Signs were displayed at the sold out Sydney concert on November 28, 2015, at the ANZ Stadium which said "Today's events are being recorded and filmed for global streaming, and may also form part of a television program... for commercial and promotional purposes."

Although there was no further information about what the filming was for at the time, there was speculation that it would form a DVD of the 1989 World Tour to be released once the tour concluded its run in Melbourne in late 2015. Later speculation involved an Apple Music Video launch, which was proved to be correct.

As such, " All You Had to Do Was Stay " and " This Love " were added back to the show after having been left off the set list for several months, making the Sydney setlist identical to look a lot like Tokyo when the tour premiered.

It contains over two hours of concert, interview, and never-before seen backstage and rehearsal footage with some of the musical and surprise guests from previous shows.

Celebrities making appearances in the film include Mick Jagger, Jason Derulo, Idina Menzel, Justin Timberlake, Wiz Khalifa, and Alanis Morissette. It was directed by Jonas Åkerlund.

Clips from the film were later compiled for the music video for the seventh and final single from the album, " New Romantics ".

Setlist History: Taylor Swift Kicks Off The '1989' World Tour

1989 may have been Taylor Swift’s fourth album overall, but it was actually her very first pop album. Departing from her country roots, the singer-songwriter played around with synth sounds and pop friendly beats and it paid off. The album sold over a million copies in just its first week out. It dominated the Billboard charts and landed Taylor the Grammy for Album of the Year.

So it stands to reason that the tour that accompanied this album would be just as epic. Fans found out just how huge it was when The 1989 World Tour kicked off on May 2, 2015 at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.

The setlist was almost exclusively songs from 1989 , with 14 out of 18 songs from the album dominating the night. In Tokyo this meant there were plenty of live debuts: “New Romantics,” “I Wish You Would,” “How You Get the Girl,” “I Know Places,” “All You Had to Do Was Stay,” “You Are In Love,” “Clean,” “This Love” and “Bad Blood.”

The few previously released songs Taylor performed were remixed specifically for the tour to fit with the synth-pop feel of 1989 . “Love Story” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” notably were changed for the tour.

The actual show was broken up across eight “acts,” with a few songs featured in each. Back-up dancers, costume changes, floating platforms and more made up the stage show, though there was also time for Taylor alone on stage with a grand piano to perform a mash-up of “Enchanted” and “Wildest Dreams.” The show closed out with the album’s hit lead single “Shake It Off,” accentuated by fireworks and confetti.

That night in Tokyo was the start of something big. The tour went on to be a global success and was notable for featuring surprise songs and surprise guests at each of the dates. But none of it happens without Taylor herself setting the standard on that first date eight years ago at the kick off, with a brand new sound and a brand new show.

Taylor Swift beats own Spotify record for most single-day streams for an artist

On the day of the release of “1989 (Taylor’s Version),”  Taylor Swift  set a  Spotify  record in becoming the artist with the most streams in a single day in the streaming service’s history, according to a statement from Spotify on Saturday on X.

The company added that, on top of that, “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” had set a 2023 record as Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day so far this year.

Spotify did not release overall numbers for the album or Swift’s total as an artist, as is its custom when announcing records being broken. But the company did say that the new Vault track “‘Slut!’ (Taylor’s Version)” debuted in the U.S. at No. 1 with 5.2 million streams, and globally with 11.3 million. On the global chart, meanwhile, a non-Vault track, “Style (Taylor’s Version),” slipped just slightly ahead of “‘Slut!’,” debuting with 11.6 million streams.

A look at the top 50 charts Spotify publishes on its site every day for both the U.S. and the world includes daily stats that provide further numerical indication of the strength of the songs on the album.

On Spotify’s daily U.S. top 50 ranking, as of Saturday afternoon, the 21 tracks on the standard edition of “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” occupy all 21 positions.

There is also a 22nd track that was appended Friday onto what was billed as a “deluxe edition” — the remix of “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar’s guest rap — and that Kendrick-ized version is in the 23rd spot, separated from the standard-edition tracks only by Drake’s “IDGAF” at No. 22. Also, a Swift song that is not on “1989,” her current Billboard Hot 100 topper “Cruel Summer,” appears soon thereafter at No. 25, giving her 23 out of the top 25 songs on Spotify’s daily domestic chart as of this writing.

On Spotify’s global top 50 chart, the album is almost as all-dominant. The first 17 songs on that chart at this writing are all from “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” and all 21 of the tracks are accounted for within the top 25.

American listeners expressed a clear preference for the all-new Vault tracks. On the U.S. Spotify chart, four of the five Vault songs at present take up the top four positions, starting with “‘Slut!’,” before “Style (Taylor’s Version)” interrupts them at No. 5. But on the service’s global chart, “Style (Taylor’s Version)” continues to reign at No. 1, relegating “‘Slut!’” to No. 2 in the international market.

If the new album beats the opening-day streaming numbers for “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” which came out just three and a half months ago, that augurs well for the overall first week the album might enjoy.

Up till now, the July release “Speak Now (TV)” has had the best first week of any album so far in 2023, with a first week of 716,000 units. But 507,000 of those units were pure album sales, so whether “1989 (TV)” is able to beat its immediate predecessor may be up to how much it sells, at least as much as how well it streams. First-week returns won’t be reported by Luminate until a week from Sunday. But the odds of sales matching the uptick in streams are good, especially with multiple vinyl variants again being available.

If you’re wondering, just as a point of curiosity, what the  least  popular songs on the album are (albeit still more popular than anything out there from anyone else in the U.S.), those would be the two ballads from “1989,” with fans immediately gravitating more toward the bangers. “This Love” and “You Are in Love,” come in at the (still-high) bottom of the “1989 (TV)” tunes, with 2.5 and 2.4 million daily streams in the U.S., respectively.

Those stand in contrast to the eight songs registering more than 4 million streams per day domestically. In the latest U.S. chart, “‘Slut!’” was easily the top song, with 5.3 million streams, followed by “Is It Over Now?” and “Say Don’t Go,” virtually tied with about 4.8 million each, “Now That We Don’t Talk” with 4.7 million, and the remake of “Style” at a little less than 4.5 million. The Vault track experiencing a slight lag behind its companions was “Suburban Legends,” with 4.1 million Spotify streams for the day.

Commercial expectations for the “Taylor’s Version” re-do of “1989” have been high, with assumptions that it will easily outpace this past summer’s blockbuster performance of “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” — and maybe even have a shot at outpacing the million-plus opening numbers last fall for the mega-blockbuster “Midnights.”

The original “1989” from 2014 is widely considered her most popular album — or at least her most impactful — even though it ranks just behind “Fearless” in sales markers, having come out at a time when streaming had overcome album sales as the dominant form of consumption. “1989” has been certified nine-times-platinum, just shy of the 10 million certification for “Fearless.” The original Big Machine release has been back in the Billboard chart’s top 20 in recent months, as a result of the Eras Tour, although that is likely to end now that Swifties will largely switch allegiance to the fresh version.

Promisetobedazzling Midnights Pins

It’s jean-jacket season again, which means it’s open enrollment for a batch of enamel pins on the front pockets. Gift one (or more) of these Midnights Pins, like a psychedelic-style Karma Is My Boyfriend pick, or a tarot-card-inspired Mastermind pin.

Awe Inspired Rhiannon Necklace

Awe Inspired Rhiannon Necklace

Another page straight out of Taylor’s book, the Awe Inspired Rhiannon Necklace is very much in rotation in the singer’s own collection—she even dons the pendant in the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” music video. And it’s only fitting, seeing as Rhiannon is the goddess of creativity, overcoming adversity, and feminine power. Sound familiar?

Frye Campus Boots

Never mind the fact that Frye Campus Boots are the fall boot right now—they also totally channel debut-era Tay Tay. Especially in the Banana hue, we can picture Taylor posted up, pen in hand, drafting the first version of “Teardrops on My Guitar” (ok, chills?). These shoes make a super-generous gift that your loved one will wear over and over.

Just when everyone thought we’d seen the end of the Taylor Swift fandom in Wales, now the European leg of the American popstar’s Era’s Tour has come to the end, it seem she’s here to stay in one part of the country. Nestled in the Anglesey community of Beaumaris, a shop and café has centred their business around all things Taylor Swift inspired, and people are absolutely loving it.

The shop itself which now sells Taylor Swift-inspired items is still known as The Mock Turtle, an Alice in Wonderland reference, but the adjoining café, where they create all sorts of Taylor Swift-themed foods and drink including homemade cookies is called 'August', a nod to one of Taylor's well known songs.

The business is based just across the road from the Welsh seaside town’s castle and has soared in popularity over recent weeks after they became a social media hotspot. One TikTok creator shared a video of what the shop looked like on the inside, and since then the business has become the place to be for Taylor Swift not just in Wales, but the rest of the UK and other parts of the world. “We had some people in from Germany the other day”, owner of the business Lottie Summers told WalesOnline. “I have tried to say people can go on the website to order things if they like but lots of people just want to visit and it’s just become a destination in itself.

Inside a Taylor Swift themed shop, where they play Taylor Swift music all day as well as sell all sorts of memorabilia

Lotti, who was not a huge Taylor Swift fan until recently originally started mixing up her business by integrating Harry Styles gifts into her shop, but when the Taylor Swift craze took off even more, around a year ago she saw an opportunity to embrace some memorabilia that would appeal to Swifties as well.

Lotti, whose favourite Taylor Swift song is August which is also the name of the shop, where they play Taylor Swift music all day as well as sell all sorts of memorabilia said: “I love her now. And everyone who works here is Taylor Swift obsessed as well. One of our girls in the coffee shop loves her loads, and drives an hour to come and work here. And she makes great coffee too.

“There was a TikTok that was made and it just went viral so it’s all been growing into a monster over the last few weeks, and we’ve had huge deliveries from the Netherlands and America.

“We also did an advert with the lady who made the TikTok who came in for afternoon tea and put it on Facebook and it just exploded, and we’re only tiny but we are now able to employ about eight people.”

Taylor Swift-themed cupcakes

Lotti uses local suppliers and bakers for her coffee shop, and says that it has helped to boost people’s positivity when they go in and spend time there. “Everyone just leaves with a massive smile on their face”, she said.

“When people see the hand-painted Taylor Swift biscuits they get so excited and come in and buy them in the dozen, can’t keep up. The cruise ships are in at the moment and when people come in they are like; ‘Taylor Swift? Here?’ They just love it.

“When people come in, all they want to talk about is Taylor. All day the music’s playing, and we’ve just had an artist come in and decorate the walls with a typewriter and the Christian Louboutin boots that she wears on stage and the whole place is full of drawings and artwork that have got Taylor on.

Wall art in Taylor Swift coffee shop

“Even the coffee cups have got Taylor on. And everyone that comes in is really sweet and they swap friendship bracelets with the staff and everything. I’ve not met a nasty Swiftie yet.”

Before opening the business after the pandemic, Lotti used to run an accountancy company. But since leaving that life behind, she has not looked back.

She added: “I sold the company about two years ago, and we’d opened the shop just before I sold up. We came out of lockdown and I was just sick of accountancy because I was doing like 80 hour weeks during lockdown.

“I’d always loved collecting artist’s memorabilia as a kid so I just thought I’m going to open a shop and make it a bit quirky and a bit different and it was always very pop art-led with the Beatles and a lot of ABBA and funky stuff and then I just started doing Taylor Swift at the same time as Harry Styles and it just took it to another level.”

Benny Goodman was a man of many contradictions. He was a superb clarinet player although he was never considered to be a great swinger. He and his band ushered in the swing era, and he was also at the forefront of integrating black musicians into what were formerly all-white bands. Perhaps not surprisingly he was a stern task-master and very frugal in paying the band musicians. Finally he had a big ego and was very reluctant to allow band members to gain individual recognition when it might take away from his lustre. The bassist and jazz writer Bill Crow, who played in the band Goodman took to Russia, offers the following story (condensed version) about this trip in his book From Birdland To Broadway: Scenes From A Jazz Life: Benny had commissioned new music from several well-known jazz composers, but by the time we reached Moscow, we werent playing much of it. John Carisi wrote one new chart that Benny liked called The Bulgar and Other Balkan Type Inventions. One night in Moscow when Benny pointed to Phil (Woods) during The Bulgar , Phil stood up and played an absolutely spectacular solo filled with swinging, dancing, and fireworks. When he was finished the whole band joined the audience in a roar of approval. Benny never gave Phil a chance to do that again. In that spot the next night, he called his old arrangement of Bugle Call Rag and we never played the Carisi chart again. The concerts were recorded but Benny didnt include The Bulgar on the album Benny Goodman in Moscow. So the album title The Complete Benny Goodman In Moscow is really not complete at all but, nevertheless, it is a pleasurable romp given the first-rate musicians that were in the band.

When Benny Goodman and the band undertook this trip to Russia in May/June 1962, Nikita Khrushchev was the First Secretary of the Communist Party and relations between the US and Russia were caught up in Cold War rhetoric. The US State Department hoped that a Goodman tour might help to thaw relations and show a positive side of the US to the Russian people. Whether Goodman was the correct choice when other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong were, in fact, more popular is another question. Since most Russians would not have been all that familiar with Goodmans music, the band would not be saddled with the old Goodman band book. After the perfunctory opening number Lets Dance, the band swings into Mel Powells Mission To Moscow with its catchy Balkan dance rhythms and Goodmans clarinet riding over the tight sax section ensemble passages. Pianist John Bunch wrote a lively jump number Why You? that fitted right into a more modern big-band setting and gave tenor-man Zoot Sims some space to shine. As the album segues into quintet, sextet, and octet tracks, Goodman hogs most of the solos, except where Teddy Wilson participates on the quintet medley. Here he is as sparking as ever and gives full measure on the time allotted. Goodman still has the speed to stay in the game, but flounders on the upper registers when he is obligated to perform there. That is especially noticeable on The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise. But never mind, Mel Lewis brush work is exemplary and drives the tune forward. The final track on CD1 is a big-band version of Bye Bye Blackbird using a chart from John Bunch. This is a complete rip-off from the Miles Davis version included in the album Round Midnight, even to the inclusion of the Red Garland chord changes from the bridge back to the melody. Nevertheless it is well done and a good closer.

The offerings on this CD are a bit of a mash-up in that they come from several sources. Tracks 1 through 10 are from the Moscow concerts but tracks 5-10 were not part of the original LPs. Track 11 is the same band but recorded in Tbilisi, Georgia. The other cuts are taken from a couple of US television show soundtracks, have inferior sound quality, and are slightly out of sync. So cutting to the chase, the first five tracks are interesting and well done, and the balance of the CD for the most part is just dross. Tadd Dameron, who was probably one of the most influential composers and arrangers of the bebop era, wrote the first two tracks, Swift As The Wind and Fontainebleau. Both of these were way beyond Goodmans traditional band book, but given the make-up of the band on the tour, fitted in to the players capability of reading and playing complex arrangements. Even Goodman was caught up by the freshness of the arrangements, as he played as well as he had on any of the other more conventional offerings. Meadowland, also known as Song Of The Plains, was used as a marching song by the Red Army Choir. Arranger Joe Lipman turned it into a high-velocity swinger with some wicked drum breaks from Mel Lewis and fine tenor solo from Zoot Sims. The Russian audience seems particularly pleased with this interpretation.

Benny Goodman in his prime had terrific breath control and there was a certain lyricism in his playing. This outing is far from that period and should be considered in the context in which it was performed.

All Music Guide – copyright This bootleg of Dave Brubeck's tour of the former Soviet Union in 1987 was supposedly taken from the same concert as the one excerpted on Brubeck's Concord CD Moscow Night (Concord considered but never issued a second CD from Moscow), but the jury is still out. Unfortunately, the excellent performances heard on this disc are marred by the low quality that is all too common among Melodiya's concert recordings of classical artists; this master tape likely came from an audience taping because of the distortion, the lack of balance among the instruments, and the far too audible coughs and sneezes heard on occasion. Oddly enough, there are only three numbers on this CD that are also present on Moscow Night, and only one of those, "Take Five," sounds very similar on both dates ("Unsquare Dance" and "Theme for June" are the other two). Brubeck's upbeat arrangement of the Disney tune "Someday My Prince Will Come" can still bring joy to the most dour heart, while his Oriental blues "Koto Song" has a captivating extended introduction that sets up Bill Smith's haunting clarinet solo. Smith's electronic gadgetry adds a new dimension to Brubeck's "Blues for Newport," which is played much faster than its debut performance on the CD of the same name. Son Chris switches from his fretless electric bass to bass trombone for the crowd-pleasing strut "King for a Day" (from Brubeck's The Real Ambassadors). Drummer Randy Jones draws the spotlight for a sensational solo in "Pange Lingua March," which became a regular feature for the percussionist in the years that followed. Brubeck fans will definitely want to pick up this CD, though better sound would have given it a higher rating. Ken Dryden © Copyright Rovi Corporation
