The Blackout: “It feels like magic where we are right now”

Nine years after calling things quits, Sean Smith talks the biggest renaissance in post-hardcore

When The Blackout announced their reunion at the tail end of 2022, they didn’t know what to expect. Unsurprisingly, they were met with love, adoration and an immediate excitement that they would be taking to the stage again for the first time since 2015. The band were stalwarts of the UK scene at the turn of the 2010s. Bringing the intensity of post-hardcore, the melodies of pop punk, and an unparalleled party-starting attitude to everything they did, they were everything that was brilliant about the UK scene at the time. For a whole generation of alternative music fans, they were an inspiration, a gateway and a home unlike any other.

Nine years after they brought things to a close, the band are hitting the road again for five huge headline shows with support from Dead Pony . They have also invited a different local support for each date, further nurturing and holding up fresh young talent on their own terms.

We caught up with vocalist Sean Smith to find out how the band’s return has been.

The Blackout - Higher and Higher (Official Video) Feat. Hyro Da Hero

How does it feel to be at the place where these shows are finally about to happen? It’s been building to this since 2022, and now it’s finally here…

It feels very real. The thing is, I’ve been begging for the last five years for The Blackout to get back together to play these shows. Now, I’m tour managing, social media managing, merchandise designing, and promoting the band. Luckily, we have a bus, so I’m not driving just yet! All I wanted to do was play five shows with my friends and have fun. I’ve been through more mental torture trying to get these together than the eight years we were around. But saying all of that, I cannot wait for them.

At the beginning, it was just unquestioningly exciting. Like, “Oh my god, this is happening, it’s going to be brilliant, everybody is going to love it”. Now, it is exciting, but I also realise how much work goes into putting on a tour. It’s f*cking mad. But I’m really glad we’ve been able to put something like this together, and even more, we can sort out having a local band on every show. They are all class, and we all have a personal relationship with each other, so it means a bit more.

In many ways, this has been a very selfish endeavour in the best possible way. These shows are a chance to do something for yourself, the people who love you and nobody else.

Very much so. We’ve come back, and we’re not doing things the same way anymore. We’re not having it. We weren’t going to do any favours. We’re taking out bands that we like. That’s how it should be, but that’s not always how our world works.

A lot of that shows in the fact that two of the gigs you have played out of the three so far in this comeback have been in your hometown, Merthyr Tydfil. How important was it for you to do that?

They were both amazing. The Red House was the first one. It was where we started the band, and it was where we ended the band as well. So, we knew we wanted to restart it there as well. Kick it off in Merthyr again and get some new eyes on that venue. It worked because they’ve hosted some really cool shows recently.

Then there was the other show at The Scala for my birthday in December, which was an excuse for me not to have a surprise party. If we are celebrating me, we are celebrating through my band and town. The Scala was a brand-new venue, and we wanted to bring attention to it. Some people came from Canada for it, which is ridiculous. All we try to do is put the town on the map; that’s what it is all about.

The Blackout - Save Our Selves [The Warning]

And then there was Download , which is at the other end of the spectrum. How did it feel to be able to do something that massive?

I used to have nightmares about playing at big festivals like Download – where we were surprise headlining and a band like Limp Bizkit was on before us. That would obviously never happen, which is why it was a dream. But every time, Limp Bizkit would finish, and everyone would start to leave in front of the stage. And because nobody knew that we were on, I would end up running about screaming, “Boys, we need to go on right now, quick.” So that was a fear too, that nobody would ever turn up to our shows.

We were definitely nervous, especially with it being the tent furthest away from the rest of the festival. If I had known how far people would have to go to see The Blackout, I would have jumped off the stage and shaken hands with everyone there. The motherf*cker was rammed. And with all the videos I’ve seen, from the front to the back, everybody was into it, singing and dancing. So many people having the time of their lives. I went and stood out on the barrier, and for every five people, I saw someone who used to come to see us. My friends were crowd surfing; I was constantly waving and pointing at people. It was amazing.

In terms of songs you’ve played across these three shows, you’ve covered a lot of ground and played everything you could ever dream of…

Yeah, it’s a bit of everything except for anything off ‘Start The Party’, which is quite funny – a running theme. But playing in a way that covers as much as possible has been liberating. We’re not just here to show new material off or try and sell something. We are just saying, “F*ck it, remember this one?” If not, it doesn’t matter because we do. We’ve put it in the set for us. At the Scala show, we played ‘Life & Death in Space’, which is a slow jam, for the first time since 2008 possibly. We did ‘Spread Legs, Not Lies’, ‘Prepare For A Wound’, and so many others. And you could see what it meant to hear those songs on people’s faces. Playing them in front of people who still know the words is bonkers. The deep cuts that we thought that people wouldn’t know or remember as well.

We are also shaking the set up for this tour as well. There are going to be songs we didn’t play at those shows. It will be a different set every night, with three or four songs changing around. We’re just about to get into rehearsing, and we couldn’t be more excited to dive into it all.

the blackout tour uk

And you’re not stopping there because you’ll also be playing Slam Dunk . That will be a The Best In Town anniversary set, 15 years since its release. It must feel nice to see things out at a festival which means so much to you .

It’s going to f*cking awesome, what a line-up. Lucas Woodland fronting Funeral For A Friend! That’s something that I want to see more than anything else there. Daryl Palumbo is going to be doing Decadence with Head Automatica as well, hopefully wearing some sort of Miami Vice -style white suit. And then You Me At Six are there too, so that’s going to happen, you know? Where I would have usually done all of that stuff behind the scenes, organising Josh jumping on stage with us and vice versa, I’ve done it publicly. Someone tweeted us about it, so I just retweeted it and put it out there. It’s being able to put more eyes on it and get more excitement and traction about it being able to happen. That’s what it is all about. I’m not too cool to keep that sort of thing a secret. The Blackout were never a cool band, and now more than ever, we aren’t about that. So why would we hide it?

That’s the thing and why this means so much to so many. The Blackout was a source of solace for those who wanted something different and wore that difference with pride. For you to be able to look back and see that past version of yourself…

…Two lads came to the second Merthyr show who were maybe 16/17. They literally camped outside the venue. From 09:00, they were sat in the pissing rain waiting for doors to open. My first thought was “Why are you here? You’re 16?” They said that they absolutely loved our band. The last time I was in this band, they were seven. That’s mental. Spending time with and chatting with them was amazing, seeing that this thing is still moving.

There are new people who didn’t get the chance to do this the first time around. Nothing has changed about how we do things either, except there will be more light bouncing off the heads of three people in the band than before. There are a few more grey hairs, but we are playing and performing as we did initially. I feel like I am singing better now than I ever have in the past, we’re sounding better than we ever have. It feels like we have been channelling the old us. The 2009 us. It feels like magic where we are right now.

The Blackout UK tour starts on 19 February. Find tickets here.

Slam Dunk festival runs between 25-26 May.

The Blackout detail UK tour

Welsh post-hardcore outfit reveal gigs and release date for EP

the blackout tour uk

The Blackout have announced an 11-date headlining UK tour and released details of crowdfunded EP, Wolves.

They’ll be supported on the November dates by Chiodos and When We Were Wolves, while the band’s EP, Wolves , will be released to coincide with the tour.

The group were forced to cancel part of their Final Party tour late last year after frontman Gavin Butler fell ill on stage in Manchester. He was taken to hospital because of the recurrence of a neurological issue. However, the frontman says the “frustrating” year they had, sparked their enthusiasm for the new EP.

He says: “ Wolves was born from the previous, frustrating year. It took a lot of determination and sacrifice to pick ourselves up and carry on. The main reason this happened was our vision for Wolves . Writing these songs not only gave us a way to vent our frustrations, but gave us a fresh fervour for making music and the much-needed awakening to the fact we all love being in a band.”

Wolves was produced thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign in which the band exceeded their target of £10,000, raising a total of £16,692 to fund the EP. Full track details have yet to be announced.

Wolves is released on October 27.

The Blackout announce split and farewell UK tour

They say “we are unable to sustain this band anymore”..

the blackout tour uk

2nd December 2014

The Blackout have announced that they are splitting up after posting a lengthy farewell message on their Facebook page .

In the message, they say: “Unfortunately we have come to the conclusion we are unable to sustain this band anymore, and we feel the time is right to bring it to a close.”

“This is the hardest decision we have ever had to make as a band,” they add, “and although we do it with heavy hearts, we also do with our heads held high.”

The Blackout were a six-piece rock band from Merthyr Tydfil and released their final ‘Wolves’ EP earlier this year, and their last album, ‘Start the Party’, in 2013.

In the message they reveal details of five farewell shows to take place throughout March, saying: “There are no plans for anything more for The Blackout, so we hope you would like to come and party with us for the final time.

“Thank you for helping us live out our dreams.”

The Blackout play the following shows:

MARCH 23 Birmingham, Asylum 24 London, Koko 25 Manchester, Academy 26 Glasgow, King Tut’s 28 Merthyr Tydfil, Leisure Centre

The Cult add extra London show to 2024 UK anniversary tour

It comes after the band announced a 40th-anniversary tour earlier this month

Ian Astbury, left, and guitarist Billy Duffy of The Cult perform at The Pearl concert theater at Palms Casino Resort on October 27, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Cult have added an extra London show to their upcoming anniversary tour. Check out ticket details below.

The announcement comes just days after the rock icons announced details of an upcoming UK tour for the end of 2024 – which will see them celebrate 40 years as a band.

Upcoming shows will be held in 10 cities across the country, and mark the milestone anniversary of Ian Astbury and co. coming together as we recognise them today – swapping their name from the original title ‘Death Cult’ into ‘The Cult’.

Now, following the initial date at London’s Royal Albert Hall selling out, the band have announced details of a second show in the UK capital, this time held at the Roundhouse venue in Camden.

The date is added as an extension to the original run of shows and will take place on Tuesday, November 5 – the day after the Royal Albert Hall gig. Tickets are available now and you can check out an updated itinerary for the UK shows below.

The live shows focused on Death Cult and their eponymous EPs, and also boasted a setlist that spanned “the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: ‘Dreamtime’ (1984) and ‘Love’ (1985).”

Announcing the new run of dates, guitarist Billy Duffy said: “Following up from the great energy of ‘Death Cult 8323’ shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to ‘Cult 8424’… CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!”

More recently, Billy Duffy joined Johnny Marr on stage in Frome last summer to play tracks by The Smiths and Depeche Mode .

Nas has announced a new UK and European tour to mark the 30th anniversary of his groundbreaking debut album Illmatic .

The 50-year-old rapper will perform Illmatic , which he released at the age of 20, in full.

Register below to buy advance tickets in the presale.

The 15-date tour will begin in Finland in October before arriving in Britain on 10 November for shows in Manchester, Edinburgh, Wolverhampton and London.

The platinum-certified album includes classic Nas tracks such as “N.Y State of Mind”, “Halftime”, “The World Is Yours” and “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” and is regularly cited as one of the most important and influential records in rap history.

In 2021, The Independent ’s Sam Moore wrote : “As listeners of Illmatic and the rest of his discography know, Nas was always an old head with a baby face, more philosopher than hustler – but he is also a linguistic genius, capable of bending words, rhymes and syllables at will.”

The new tour will begin at the House of Culture in Helsinki, Finland on 22 October. It will then call at B-K in Stockholm, Sweden (24 October), Kb Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark (25 October), the Palladium in Cologne, Germany(27 October), Fabrique in Milan, Italy (30 October) and Halle 622 in Zurich, Switzerland on 31 October.

In November, Nas will play the Gasometer in Vienna, Austria (2 November), the Uber Eats Music Hall in Berlin, Germany (3 November), AFAS Live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (5 November), Le Zenith in Paris, France (7 November) and Stadthalle Offenbach in Offenbach, Germany on 8 November.

In the UK, Nas will appear at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester (10 November), Usher Hall, Edinburgh (11 November), University Wolverhampton at the Civic Hall, Wolverhampton (14 November) and finally the Royal Albert Hall in London on 15 November.

Fans can register here to buy tickets in the presale, which begins at 10am BST on Tuesday 23 April.

General tickets go on sale at 10am BST on Thursday 25 April.

In a five-star review of Nas’ 2021 album King’s Disease 2 , The Independent ’s Annabel Nugent wrote: “While most of today’s prominent rappers were not yet born when a 20-year-old Nasir Jones was coming up in New York City, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t cite his 1994 benchmark debut Illmatic as an inspiration. A wordsmith, revered elder statesman, teacher, storyteller: the legend around Nas is all-encompassing.”

Bam margera addresses uk tour cancelation drama, adamant he's sober, bam margera addresses uk tour cancelation drama ... adamant he's sober.

Bam Margera 's clearing the air about why his UK tour got the axe -- and while some have suspected it's all about him falling off the wagon ... he's saying he's clean and sober.

Here's the deal ... Bam's been across the pond lately for a string of Q&A gigs he'd booked through a promoter -- where he was scheduled to talk to audiences ... all of which recently came to a screeching halt after the peeps he was working with announced the rest of his appearances were cancelled.

There's been a lot of accusations and drama brewing in the background this past week -- with allegations that Bam was acting erratic and rolling with a new crew of misfits.

Some online -- especially on Reddit -- have been claiming Bam's been indulging in booze and drugs again ... but he hopped online Thursday to deny all that, insisting not only is he alcohol-free ... but he had a perfectly good reason for canceling his shows in the UK.

Long story short ... Bam says he re-injured his knee, and that these shows are gonna get rebooked -- so it's no harm, no foul in his mind.

He does allude to some kind of physical confrontation between the people Bam's been staying with and the promoters ... but he says he wasn't in the mix for that -- so he doesn't think he did anything wrong. He also acknowledges he and his girlfriend have been fighting.

Last but not least ... Bam shoots down any notion he's been under the influence lately, pointing to the fact he's drinking tea in the video. Remember, this comes not too long after he got into a fistfight on the street here in L.A. ... so, thing have been a bit tumultuous.

Despite all that ... Bam is insisting everything's A-OK -- although, hard to say if folks buy it.

Here's hoping all is, in fact, well -- because there are many who are pretty worried about him.
