Review: South Park “The World-Wide Privacy Tour”

The World-Wide Privacy Tour is the tour that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle take to let everyone know that they just want their privacy. They criss-cross the globe to whomever is going to listen, eventually settling in that little quiet town of South Park, Colorado. Now shacking up in Stan’s old digs, the duo makes the town’s life a living hell in trying to get everyone to notice their campaign to NOT get noticed.

Meanwhile, Kyle is attempting to work on his own “brand”, in essence a social media bio that everyone can use to identify him and he, in turn, can stay confined to the parameters of that bio. His friends don’t give a shit about the royalty now living across the street or his attempts at re-branding himself, leaving Kyle to fend for himself.

A lot of ink will go towards Prince Harry and Markle getting the business in this week’s episode of  South Park,  but I have some stylistic complaints with how they were presented.  South Park  has featured British royalty in the past, the episode “The Snuke”, where the Queen is a bit of a villain and attempts to invade South Park. Granted, she dies in that episode, but I would have thought if you were going to do a send-up of Harry and Meghan, 1) they wouldn’t be presented as Canadian and 2) you could have just as easily had Ike fawn over the passing of the Queen of England a bit more which is just as pertinent to Canadians of whom don’t even have a Queen. I get that Ike is the link here and it kind of sets off Kyle’s path towards his eventual confrontation, but the link is so light I’m not sure it would have mattered. I guess I would’ve used funeral footage of  South Park’s  actual Queen of England to which Ike could have been just as upset thereby allowing the eventual re-invasion of Meghan and Harry, neither of whom are Canadian so having them presented as such was just a tad confusing for me.

If you take away my slight complaints, and just took the show at face value, you probably had a better time enjoying the episode than I did, however I still really enjoyed the episode. For starters, Kyle”s attempts at re-branding himself are right on point with those who only define themselves by their social bios and not who they are supposed to be. It’s one of the reasons why I didn’t give a shit about displaying my social pronouns or my political leanings because I know who I am, who you perceive me to be, isn’t my problem. A fantastic morale in a show that maybe is good for one or two good ones each season.

The Meghan and Harry bit was quite hilarious. Every rip on Canadian culture still holds up, from the constant farting to their wacky accents, they kill me every time. Harry’s character design is already fantastic, with a bright red/orange top, he’s an instantly recognizable figure that could be a fixture for the show for years to come, or never again, and I would still be able to pick him out. His antics are hilarious, but the fact that it’s so true that American kids really don’t give a fuck about foreign royalty is such a smart and effective “fuck you” to the American media that made such a big deal about British royalty the last few years.

Personally, I think my favorite send-up of British royalty will always be  Spitting Image.  The series still is effective in it’s biting satire of British celebrity, which makes sense, given that the producers are UK-based and have a nuanced take that would be hard to replicate here in the States.  South Park  maybe pulls a punch or two, but still has an effective heavy blow that should be feared.

Oh my God! They killed their credibility! South Park’s Harry and Meghan parody proves one thing

In the episode titled ‘worldwide privacy tour’, a couple known as the prince and princess of canada travel the world in search of their privacy, while giving sit-down television media interviews demanding their privacy.

An official spokesperson for Harry and Meghan has now confirmed that they are not intending to take legal action against Comedy Central’s South Park , for the as yet unactionable crime of ripping the absolute piss out of them.

In the week since the episode named “The Worldwide Privacy Tour” aired, it has been consistently speculated that legal action may have been forthcoming. But now a spokesperson has gone to the trouble to tell People magazine that, “It’s all frankly nonsense. Totally baseless, boring reports.”

Harry and Meghan are not explicitly named, in “The Worldwide Privacy Tour,” in which a couple known as the Prince and Princess of Canada travel the world in search of their privacy, while giving sit-down television media interviews demanding their privacy. Reference to them comes only obliquely, through extreme physical resemblance and, in the Prince of Canada’s case, the promotion of a book called Waaaagh .

The speculation has been assisted by apparent “sources close” to Harry and Meghan, one of whom told The Spectator magazine that Meghan had been “upset and overwhelmed” by said episode. Naturally, we do not know who said source was, or how close to Harry and Meghan they really are, a neat PR device long deployed by the royal family, and which Prince Harry spent roughly 19 hours worth of TV interviews complaining about to CNN, ITV and his own Netflix-backed documentary company.

It is not entirely also clear whether said spokesperson intended to intimate quite so strongly that “The Worldwide Privacy Tour” itself was baseless and boring. It is, on any measure, anything but. It is absolutely hilarious , a brutalising satire delivered with the kind of economy and precision that has kept South Park on air for fully 25 years .

South Park viewers spot blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Kate Middleton reference in viral episode

Other sources close to the couple have intimated to other outlets that they would hardly sue South Park , not least as being roasted by South Park lands them in exquisitely good company. Just ask Tom Cruise and Matt Damon (pronounced, of course, Maaaatt Daaaaamon).

South Park ’s co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were also behind puppet movie Team America: World Police , in which a very long list of highly self-regarding Hollywood actors take it upon themselves to try and save the world, for very little good reason beyond having begun to take themselves far too seriously.

So it is not hugely difficult to see why it is that they should have alighted upon Harry and Meghan as potential targets.

In one scene, it is pointed out to the Prince of Canada that, having been paid a very large amount of money to write a book about the royal family , maybe he can’t hate journalists as much as he says he does because he is one himself. The Prince and Princess of Canada walk out in disgust, and end up setting up a new life, in the house opposite Kyle in South Park, whereupon they goad him into disrespecting their privacy through ever more attention-seeking stunts on their front lawn, one of which is not easily forgotten.

Of course, it’s perfectly possible to be sympathetic toward Harry and Meghan. And a man who has had his life story written for him by hundreds (if not thousands) of others has earned every right to a full right of reply, however many books and hours of documentary he deems it takes. And the right to tell your own story on your own terms, and maintain a private life too, is not a wholly unreasonable demand.

But the question has always been, where do they go next ? What do they do with the rest of their lives, when they’ve opted out of the institution that, in their view, gave them a score to settle?

The problem with South Park getting their claws into them is not a small one. It makes it clear that they have turned themselves into a joke, both in their old home and their new one.

Fans and critics alike took to social media to respond to South Park's latest satire on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex .

Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s show follows the young royals, the Prince and Princess of Canada, flying around the world on a Global Privacy Tour to promote his autobiography ‘Aaargh’.

Following the release of Wednesday's episode, many were quick to publish their reactions online, saying even 26 years on the show 'has the best writers in the game by far!'

Others said the episode had brought them back after getting bored with the show years ago, while new viewers were drawn in having never heard of South Park before.

The episode focused on a red-headed prince and his wife from Canada who become frustrated with public attention after a family feud.

The show has used Canada as a stand-in for other countries before. In Season Nineteen, the new Canadian President - who carries more than a resemblance to Donald Trump - looks to build a huge border wall to keep the Americans out.

The show attracted new viewers including Twitter user Canellelabelle who said 'I have never ever heard of this show till now but THIS is hilarious! They summed up exactly how we all see this annoying duo.'

Twitter user Pièce de Résistance, who said they had got bored with South Park 'years ago' said they might watch the controversial episode, 'which, [by the way] is precisely why Trey and Matt did a Harry and Meghan episode,' they said.

'They will ruthlessly mock anything.'

'It just means [Harry and Meghan] are famous enough to draw viewers.

South Park is notorious for going after figures from popular culture.

While some recent seasons have toyed with 'themes', ridiculing political correctness, gentrification and advertising among other topics, the show has generally been very broad in who and what it satirizes over the past 26 seasons.

Routine portrayals of the Mormons - the creators also wrote hit show 'The Book of Mormon' - have drawn criticism from members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The portrayal of different religious and social communities has drawn wide backlash from across the political spectrum for many years.

The duo's animation has taken aim at a mix of targets, including major and minor religions, pop singers, Republican and Democrat presidents, climate change activism and climate change denial.

The episode itself opens with Kyle's younger brother Ike, adopted from Canada, inconsolable at the news that the Queen of Canada - who resembles the late Queen Elizabeth II - is dead.

The Prince and Princess of Canada are seen at a large state funeral, where they are booed by the rest of the royal family, accused of bashing the Canadian monarchy.

Against the backlash, the couple appear on breakfast television to demand their privacy.

Arriving on the set of Good Morning Canada with a book to promote, the prince holds aloft a placard reading 'We want privacy', while the princess's banner reads: 'Stop looking at us.'

The host asks whether, in reporting on the royal family for his new book, 'Waaagh', he has now become a journalist himself, despite hating them.

'We just want to be normal people - all this attention is so hard,' the prince replies.

The couple are challenged by the host who questions how sincerely they want privacy, and the royals storm off the set.

The couple board their private jet, and embark on a worldwide 'we want privacy' tour - complete with dancing rainbows and a catchy theme tune.

They visit France and India where they chant their pro-privacy slogans to bemused locals - and even a field of kangaroos during a pit stop in Australia.

Eventually they settle in the quiet town of South Park, Colorado.

'If we moved here, people would think we're really serious about wanting to be normal.'

The royals clash with the locals, arriving with a drum kit and demanding privacy from neighbors.

Kyle wakes one morning and finds the house has been covered with magazines featuring the princess.

They include a cover strongly resembling that of The Cut magazine after it ran a cover interview with Meghan last summer.

When Kyle confronts the royals, the princess yells: 'He victimized me!'

The prince springs to his wife's defense.

'This is an outrage!' he cries. 'We'll see how he deals with my blue penis!'

This appears to refer to a case of frostbite detailed in Harry's autobiography, Spare.

The prince and princess turn to a crudely-named marketing agency for help protecting their privacy.

'There's this horrible spy who lives across the street from us,' the prince explains.

The branding manager says he already has a file on the princess, which she created several years ago.

'I have your brand already: Sorority girl, actress, influencer and victim,' he tells her.

The prince's brand is decided as: 'Royal prince, millionaire, world traveler, victim.'

The prince, inside the agency, suddenly has a lightbulb moment and realizes that he doesn't want to be a brand.

'Trying to make ourselves into a brand just turned us into products,' the Canadian prince declares.

'No more magazines and Netflix shows, we can just live a normal life!'

He stands to leave, and walks towards the door - but his wife remains inside the branding company.

'Come on honey, we don't need this place!' he says. 'Honey?'

The prince leaves alone.

Kyle rejoins his friends, who invite him out to play.

The prince then arrives, and asks if he can play too.

He brings out his drum kit.

How a 3d virtual tour shared a beloved ship’s story with the world, in its latest of many lives, the schooner ernestina-morrissey is often at sea, unavailable to park visitors. we recreated it virtually so more people than ever can explore its decks—and its stories..

Some of the more fascinating parts of our shared cultural heritage don’t stay put.

Built in 1894, the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey currently spends about six months a year berthed in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It's one of the features of New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and a draw for many visitors. But the ship is also an active teaching and training vessel and a member of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy fleet, so it’s not always available for in-person tours. Using 360-degree (360°) imaging technology, we created a three-dimensional, virtual tour of the much-loved ship, enabling 24-7, year-round, internet access to this important piece of maritime history.

Established in 1996, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park occupies 34 acres in an urban environment. This national park preserves, protects, and shares information about the history of the American whaling industry. The park also preserves stories of global immigration, the Underground Railroad, women’s history, architecture, and art. Through my work, I (da Silva) look for different ways to tell the park’s exciting stories. I’d heard that the National Center for Preservation Technology was creating virtual tours of textile mills in Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. I reached out to Catherine Cooper at the center to see if something similar could be done for the Ernestina-Morrissey.

I (Cooper) have been working with the center’s Technical Services team to creatively apply 360° imaging technology to expand the accessibility and interpretation of cultural sites. We were making virtual, child-height tours of the textile mills at Blackstone River when da Silva contacted me. The timing for her project was right: the Ernestina-Morrissey had just undergone extensive renovation and would soon be returning to port. I went to New Bedford to collect data for the virtual tour.

Ernestina-Morrissey—the Phoenix Ship

Like the mythological bird, the phoenix, the Ernestina-Morrisey has lived many lives and served many purposes. Its first life began on February 1, 1894, when it left the shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts, as the Effie M. Morrisey. The ship was named after Captain William E. Morrissey’s daughter and served as a fishing vessel up and down the east coast of North America. Between 1894 and 1914, the ship made berth in Massachusetts and in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, Canada, under different captains. It’s one of only a handful of remaining fishing schooners that exemplify the early history of the fishing industry on the east coast of North America. New Bedford, where the ship now lives, has been the largest fishing port in the northeastern United States for more than 20 years .

The Morrissey entered a second life when Captain Robert “Bob” Bartlett bought the ship from his cousin, Harold Bartlett, in 1924. Bob Bartlett was an arctic explorer who took students and scientists north on the Morrissey from 1926 to 1946. It was during this life that the Morrissey was outfitted with its first engine and tough 1.5-inch greenheart (a water-resistant Central American hardwood known for its strength) sheathing to protect the hull from ice. From 1942 to 1945, during the Second World War, the ship transported supplies to arctic base camps. Former crew members, scientists, and students who sailed with Bartlett remain deeply connected to the Morrissey.

A fire broke out in the galley, and the New York City Fire Department sank the ship in the harbor to put out the flames.

In 1946, after Bartlett’s death, two brothers, Melvin and Sidney Jackson, bought the Morrissey. They started the Coastal Carrier Corporation, intending to use the ship for trade in the South Pacific. But this was a short and almost life-ending interlude for the vessel, as the brothers soon deemed the Morrissey unseaworthy and docked it in Flushing, New York. A fire broke out in the galley, and the New York City Fire Department sank the ship in the harbor to put out the flames. The brothers raised the ship shortly thereafter, towed it to Connecticut, and put it up for sale.

Henrique Mendes, a Cape Verdean ship captain, and his family bought the Effie M. Morrissey in 1947. They had the vessel towed to New Bedford and began repairs. During the renovation, the Mendes family removed the engine, drive shaft, and propeller to prepare the ship for its fourth life as a packet—cargo and passenger—vessel. In 1949, Henrique Mendes changed the name of the ship to Ernestina, after his daughter, and registered the vessel in Cape Verde, an island country 385 miles off the west coast of Africa. The Ernestina carried cargo and immigrants between America and the Cape Verde Islands from 1948 to 1965.

In 1977, Cape Verde gifted the Ernestina to “the people of the United States” to be delivered to the State of Massachusetts.

During the 19th century, men from the Cape Verde Islands often joined the crews of whaling ships when the ships stopped in port to seek supplies and new personnel. By the end of the whaling era in 1925, Cape Verdean women and children also emigrated to the United States, often landing in New Bedford. Emigration from Cape Verde moved from whaling ships to packet vessels like the Ernestina throughout the 20th century. The schooner continues to symbolize the legacy of the Cape Verdean-American community and is frequently included in community events.

Ownership of the vessel passed from Mendes to his son-in-law, Luiz Silva Randall, governor of Cape Verde, in 1963, then through several hands until the government of Cape Verde acquired it. In 1977, Cape Verde gifted the Ernestina to “the people of the United States” to be delivered to the State of Massachusetts. It took years of fundraising and repairs to prepare the ship for another trans-Atlantic crossing, but the Ernestina returned to the United States on August 30, 1982.

The U.S. Department of the Interior granted the Ernestina national landmark status in 1990, and the ship began its fifth life—as a living history museum and educational vessel. The Massachusetts State Legislature designated the ship as the official vessel of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1994, establishing the Schooner Ernestina Commission. Congress added the ship to New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park's enabling legislation when it established the park in 1996. In 2014, the Schooner Ernestina Commission of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts changed the ship’s official name to Ernestina-Morrissey, encompassing its whole history.

"This is the start of a really great next chapter."

But the commission struggled for many years to keep the ship maintained and Coast Guard certified, so in 2019, the Ernestina-Morrissey began its sixth life when Massachusetts State, together with the commission, transferred stewardship of the vessel to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy . The ship went to Boothbay Harbor, Maine, for a complete restoration , returning to the water again in late 2022. Then it began participating in national sailing events, including the 2023 Gulf Coast Tall Ships Challenge . The Massachusetts Maritime Academy is working toward dual Coast Guard certification for the ship in order to take school groups and educators out to sea.

“This is the start of a really great next chapter,” said the vessel’s captain, Tiffany Krihwan. “And I think it's going to be a nice long chapter working with the cadets at the academy…doing outreach for [school] programs on all different aspects of marine science, cultural awareness, oceanography, history, living history, sea history, nautical sciences.” Krihwan said the ship will still go to tall ship events “so that people can come and see her, tour on board.”

Creating a Digital Twin and Avoiding Ghosts

When I (Cooper) arrived in New Bedford in July 2023, it was warm and sunny with a breeze blowing in off the ocean, perfect weather for working onboard the Ernestina-Morrissey. Da Silva and I walked down from park headquarters to where the ship was docked and spoke to Captain Krihwan and the crew about the scope of our project. With 360° imaging, everything the camera sees gets included in the model. But the Ernestina-Morrissey is not just a sailing vessel; it’s home to the crew. So we also talked about how to maintain crew privacy while photographing the ship.

I could only take three to five steps when moving the tripod between images.

The 360° images can be stitched together to create a virtual, three-dimensional representation of a physical space—a ship in this case. These sorts of virtual spaces can be created using a variety of cameras, from cell phones and tablets to specialized 360° cameras. I used two cameras for this project—a Matterport Pro3 and a Ricoh Theta, both of which I controlled through an iPad. The Matterport Pro3 sits on a tripod. When in use, it automatically rotates on the tripod to collect a series of images, then stitches them into a 360° view from that location. The Theta camera has two wide angle lenses and takes a single 360° image from each location.

Image credit: NPS / Catherine Cooper

The platform we chose to use for this project was Matterport, which auto-stitches the images together to create a digital twin. As I moved the camera from one location to another, the individual 360° images began to build out the space. I could only take three to five steps when moving the tripod between images, because the software needs each image to overlap with the previous image.

It’s easiest to build out a virtual space by starting in a location that has walls. This lets the program find the edges and boundaries of the model. Doors also need to be open so that the camera can see from one compartment into another. I started by taking images with the Matterport Pro3 below deck in the ship’s galley. For spaces such as the “heads” (bathrooms), I would leave the door closed until I moved the camera a few steps away from the doorway. This would give viewers the option to go inside or continue into another room. I took additional scans to show normally hidden things, such as inside closed storage compartments . This would help viewers understand how the crew uses the space.

To avoid being in the model, we had to remember that if you can see the camera, it can see you.

While photographing inside the Ernestina-Morrissey, the crew and I needed to hide from the camera, otherwise we would become “ghosts” in the virtual tour . To avoid being in the model, we had to remember that if you can see the camera—even in a mirror or through a window—it can see you. Below deck, hiding from the camera was as easy as being in another room. On deck, I had to climb up and down ladders or crouch behind objects to avoid being caught in the picture.

To connect the decks of the ship to one another, I set up the tripod to take images on slanted ladders every few steps. I worked with Brooke Foran, a deckhand on the Ernestina-Morrissey, to get down into some of the small compartments that had completely vertical ladders. She and I passed the camera to each other up or down the steps and adjusted the height of the tripod to the height of each step. At one point, Foran had to get out of the image by crawling through a port hole into the galley.

We took and stitched together 158 360° images to create the virtual tour of the ship.

We also took images aloft, in the elevated areas of the ship such as the masts and rigging. For this, we used the Rioch Theta camera, which is about the size of a glasses case and can be mounted on a selfie stick. Spencer “Donny” Donahower, a deckhand trained to use harness and safety line, took the Theta up both masts. In total, we took and stitched together 158 360° images to create the virtual tour of the ship.

Collecting Stories

Taking images of the ship and dock took up most of two days. I dedicated my remaining time to interviewing the ship’s current crew and recording our conversations. I asked each individual how they came to be a member of the crew and if they had a favorite story about their shipboard experience to relate. They told me about the ship’s history, the intricacies of sailing, the recent restoration, and the ship’s continuing legacy. Viewers will hear the sounds of ship life in the background of many of our conversations.

We heard many stories from people who had family ties to the vessel.

I (da Silva) interviewed community members after Cooper returned to the National Center for Preservation Technology. I interviewed members of the commission and of the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Association over Teams video calls. These conversations dug into the ship’s history and its importance to both the United States and Cape Verde. I asked each interviewee three questions:

What’s your history with the Ernestina-Morrissey?

What’s your current relationship with the ship?

What do you see in the ship’s future?

We heard many stories from people who had family ties to the vessel. They shared the experience of sailing on the Ernestina-Morrissey and how the ship came back to the United States from Cabo Verde. We also dove into historic materials, finding photographs, early film footage, and news broadcasts . Much of the information was already digitized and available on the association’s website or in the archives at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth .

Building the Tour

The 360° imaging platform we used is continually updating its features and has many tools. One tool we use is a “tag”—a pin that we can add to a specific location within the tour that gives additional information. Each tag has a title and contains space for a description, keywords, and photos, audio, or videos that can be viewed inside the tour. In the Ernestina-Morrissey tour, the tags have icons: a camera for photos, a microphone for audio interviews, a video camera for videos, and chain links to denote navigation hyperlinks.

We added the interviews with crew and community members to the Ernestina-Morrissey virtual tour as videos. This makes it possible to listen to the conversations without leaving the model or downloading an audio file. For full accessibility, we transcribed all interviews so the conversations could be read as well as heard.

A Bright Future

The Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey is well on its way to an incredibly active sixth life. When the Massachusetts Maritime Academy took over stewardship of the vessel, they agreed to berth Ernestina-Morrissey in New Bedford for several months each year so the local community can interact with it. New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park expects to help out with this, providing visitors with educational opportunities to learn about the vessel and walk through it. Although more people will be able to sail onboard once the ship is certified, many will never get the chance to see it in person. The virtual tour will create a stable, accessible portal for those visitors to view the ship.

“The…360 technology allows us to engage with a much wider audience, attracting new stewards and supporters of the mighty Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey,” said the park’s superintendent, Jennifer Smith. “History lovers, tech geeks, and maritime enthusiasts will all find meaningful connections through the story and visuals captured and knitted together in this accessible virtual tour.” Smith said this technology “allows the park to carry out the intent of [its] legislation.”

The virtual world is the Ernestina-Morrissey’s most recent expedition, but it won’t be its last.

“One of the things about Ernestina-Morrissey is that she has always crossed boundaries,” said Laura Pires-Hester, PhD, a former chair of the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Commission and Cape Verdean historian and anthropologist. “She has always been open to all people, all cultures, and that's something that I'm hopeful will continue in her future.”

The tour is complete for now, but as more stories come to light or events happen, we can add information to the ship’s digital space. The virtual world is the Ernestina-Morrissey’s most recent expedition, but it won’t be its last.

New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park

It's been 28 years since tiger woods made his pga tour pro debut. he won $2,544 in that event, share this article.

“Hello world.”

It was an orchestrated line, part of a Nike campaign designed to coincide with the professional debut of 20-year-old Tiger Woods.

In fact, it was actually “I guess, hello world, huh?” when Woods opened his press conference one day before the start of the Greater Milwaukee Open on Aug. 28, 1996.

Within two days, Nike’s “Hello World” ad campaign included a three-page spread in the Wall Street Journal and a number of televised advertisements. In fact, Nike shelved all of its previous national television ads and aired its Woods spot 28 times during first-round coverage of the GMO on ESPN.

History doesn’t remember it as forced or contrived, the way “I’m going to take my talents to South Beach” awkwardly landed from the lips of LeBron James nearly 14 years later. In the category of watershed press conferences delivered by the half-century’s transcendent athletes, Woods outshined LeBron with the right dash of earnestness and charm.

He delivered those words at Brown Deer Park Golf Course in northern Milwaukee County. Woods was about to embark on a legendary career unlike anything the golf world had seen before, and he was getting started on Aug. 28, 1996, at the Greater Milwaukee Open. The turnout was estimated at 150,000 spectators, easily the most in event history, when Milwaukee became the surprise setting for the dawn of a new era.

He took 60th place, but that was beside the point

Woods finished a mere 60th place in the event, but he nonetheless left winner Loren Roberts as an afterthought, even after Roberts defeated Madison native Jerry Kelly in a playoff for the title while Edgerton’s Steve Stricker hovered just one stroke back of the leaders.

It wasn’t until the week of the event that word came Woods was seriously considering turning pro in advance of the tournament, though even then, it wasn’t a sure thing. To that point, the prevailing sentiment was that Woods, who committed in April to play the GMO with a sponsor’s exemption, could potentially turn pro if he won the event or the Quad City Classic two weeks later.

1996 Greater Milwaukee Open

But then, he won his third straight U.S. Amateur Title in Oregon the week before the GMO, roaring back from down five holes to turn the feat, and the possibility grew stronger that he’d make it official in Milwaukee. The New York Times and Los Angeles Times both reported it was happening. The pro-am at Brown Deer Park Golf Course on Wednesday was Woods’ final round as an amateur, and he held an afternoon news conference thereafter.

The GMO was suddenly bracing for a media onslaught it hadn’t seen in its 29 years. ESPN made the quick decision to air the first two rounds. Credentials were suddenly needed for Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest, People, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Chicago Sun-Times, NBC Nightly News, Live with Regis and Kathie Lee… you get the idea.

The overnight millionaire

Woods finished at 7-under 277. He won $2,544. His first sponsorship check was probably somewhat … more.

The revelation of Tiger Woods had been anticipated by the golf world for years. Jack Nicklaus himself had called Woods a can’t-miss superstar, and there was little doubt he would become a transcendent presence in the game.

The child prodigy became the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur champion at age 15, won the next two for good measure, became the youngest U.S. Amateur champion at age 18, competed in the 1995 Masters at age 19 and became the first golfer to win three straight U.S. Amateur title at age 20. He won the NCAA individual golf championship at Stanford and turned pro after two years, although his father, Earl Woods, had expressed a desire to see Tiger return to Stanford for the final two years.

But Nike and Titleist lined up sponsorship deals before he took a professional swing, the most lucrative endorsement contracts golf had seen (reported at close to $40 million but later revealed to be closer to $60 million). He was on his way to earning Sports Illustrated ‘s Sportsman of the Year in 1996 and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, not to mention the 82 PGA Tour wins that followed (tied for most all time) and the 15 major victories that rank second to only Jack Nicklaus. He’s also an 11-time PGA Tour Player of the Year.

With Woods not due back at Stanford until Sept. 28, GMO executive director Tom Strong made the smart play to offer an exemption. In fact, Strong said he tried to get Woods on a sponsor exemption in 1995, recognizing that he’d be a significant draw for an event that wasn’t one of the Tour’s marquee events, but a phone call to Stanford’s coach was never returned.

“He’s not one of those shot-in-the-dark guys,” Strong said. “He is going to be on the Tour someday, and he’ll do well. He’s not a fluke, that’s for sure.”

Woods insisted he hadn’t made up his mind until close to the announcement. He said he paid for a dinner early in the week with a gift certificate and needed his coach to float the $100 entrance fee. But when he swapped his clubs from a Ping bag to a Titleist bag late Wednesday, he was officially a pitchman.

“It wasn’t about money,” Woods said. “It was about happiness. The time was right. I knew my golf game was good enough. It boiled down to, how happy am I? And I’m happy.”

Though Woods didn’t finish near the front, he did deliver a hole-in-one on the 14th hole during the final round of play.

“I tried to punch a 6-iron under the wind but it went higher than I wanted,” Woods said. “The ball hit on the green and kicked left and I said, `That should be close.’ All of a sudden, people started jumping up and down.”

Hello world, indeed.

All Blacks v South Africa: Ellis Park legacy on the line for Scott Robertson’s men – Liam Napier

Liam Napier

THREE KEY FACTS

  • The All Blacks play South Africa Sunday 3am NZT
  • It’s the first time the two sides have met since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final
  • New Zealand has a 6-9 record at Ellis Park, Johannesburg

Liam Napier has been a sports journalist since 2010 , and his work has taken him to World Cups in rugby, netball and cricket, boxing world title fights and Commonwealth Games.

Love affair with Africa

The altitude, hostile atmosphere, and the reigning world champions. The Springboks in South Africa is rugby’s greatest test. With its towering stands and proximity to the field, no venue in world rugby quite compares to Ellis Park, which only enhances the All Blacks recent record there.

Two years ago the upset triumph that saved Ian Foster’s job was the second win on the bounce for the All Blacks, and their third victory from their last four tests, at Ellis Park. In that stretch, the 27-25 loss in 2014 is the All Blacks’ sole defeat at the 1995 World Cup final venue.

Scott Robertson has fond memories at the Boks’ spiritual home, too, after leading the Crusaders to their Super Rugby title in 2017 with a comeback victory over the Lions that broke an eight-year drought and marked the start of the red-and-black’s unrivalled seven-year championship run.

With five successes from their last six tests, there is something undeniably special about South Africa that traditionally inspires the best from the pro-era All Blacks.

It wasn’t always this way, though.

The All Blacks played their maiden test in South Africa in 1928, losing 0-17 in Durban – and didn’t savour their first breakthrough series success until 1996. These days the All Blacks have held the Freedom Cup for the past 15 years.

That leaves this team with a legacy to uphold as rugby’s greatest rivalry reignites.

Robertson’s All Blacks start rank underdogs this weekend – it’s difficult to recall a time when they were as wide as the $2.90 with local bookies earlier this week – but with the Springboks missing four locks and starting a green first five-eighth and fullback, there are openings to exploit.

Tony Brown inside oil

At a time when departing assistants from the All Blacks and England are the talk of the rugby world, Tony Brown’s presence looms into full view.

Brown is the one who got away from New Zealand rugby.

As far back as 2019, Ian Foster and Scott Robertson attempted to lure Brown to join their respective All Blacks coaching teams as they contested the right to succeed Steve Hansen. Both missed out on Brown, as he remained loyal to his long-time association with Jamie Joseph to instead link with Japan for four years.

Last year Joseph, with Brown as his running mate, went head-to-head with Robertson as New Zealand Rugby made the unprecedented move of appointing the next All Blacks head coach prior to the World Cup.

With Robertson anointed to replace Foster this year, and Joseph settling back in Dunedin with the Highlanders, Brown jetted off to join, and significantly improve, Rassie Erasmus’s Springboks.

It should not surprise that, with Brown now ensconced in his management team, Erasmus has the confidence to back 22-year-old first five-eighth Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and 26-year-old fullback Aphelele Fassi, who share 12 tests between them, to start over the experienced Handre Pollard and Willie le Roux against the All Blacks this weekend.

While they will forever embrace their traditional set piece, maul and forward-led power strengths, the Springboks have evolved their game to harness vastly more attacking endeavour compared to their knife-edge World Cup campaign that featured three successive one-point knockout wins.

From his favoured bag of kicking tricks to the depth of the backline and other set plays, Brown’s innovations have been clear in the Springboks’ evolution for all rugby observers, including the All Blacks.

“He’s had, from what I believe and what we’ve seen, an instant impact on how they’re playing,” All Blacks forwards coach Jason Ryan said this week. “There’s a few shorter lineouts and that sort of thing and some more variation. He’s made an impact on them for sure.”

Springboks centre Jesse Kriel added of Brown: “He’s brought a great energy and a great way of seeing attack. I think he’s got the guys in the room really excited. He’s got us playing a really exciting brand of rugby. It’s really important to get on the field and be excited about how you want to play. I think you can see a bit of change. But you keep the core of what you’ve built on for the last couple of years.”

While Brown has enhanced the Springboks his inside knowledge of the All Blacks could be equally telling. Brown coached, and despite the Highlanders’ limited resources, had some success against the All Blacks-laden Robertson-Scott Hansen-Ryan Crusaders.

Brown knows New Zealand’s players and game intimately. In terms of intellectual property, the All Blacks could rue his defection.

MacDonald bust-up

Leon MacDonald’s abrupt exit casts a lingering shadow over Robertson’s first tour as All Blacks head coach. Two tests in the Republic were always going to be an early litmus test of Robertson’s tenure but the sudden breakdown that sparked MacDonald’s immediate departure intensifies the spotlight.

The fallout, hefty financial compensation and team disruptions, sit squarely at Robertson’s feet after assembling his coaching team 18 months ago, only for MacDonald to depart after five tests due to unresolvable differences.

Maybe the All Blacks will shake off the reshuffled coaching portfolios that involve Hansen assuming responsibility for the attack alongside Jason Holland, and Tamati Ellison significantly upgraded from part-time contact coach to owning the defence.

A 1-1 return against the Springboks in South Africa would be acceptable but if the All Blacks don’t click in their African cauldron, serious questions will be asked as to how and why Robertson didn’t identify issues with MacDonald from the outset.

Robust debates are healthy within a coaching team but, clearly, this split could not be mended. With three of Robertson’s four assistants now from the Crusaders, there should be no such challenges with clarity.

World Cup final rematch

It won’t be front of mind as such, more a nagging frustration, but the hurt of losing the World Cup final by one point will linger for many of the All Blacks. While this is a new coaching crew, 20 players from last year’s World Cup remain in the All Blacks touring squad. Nothing will ever replace the Webb Ellis Cup. The All Blacks present that night in Paris will never get over coming so close, within one missed kick, but defeating the Springboks at home would help the healing.
