Ten Thousand Islands Boat Tour

The Ten Thousand Islands boat tour explores the coastal wilderness of the Ten Thousand Islands, and Everglades National Park.

  • This tour is aboard a large, comfortable catamaran motorboat, with partial shade.
  • Tour duration: 3 Hours
  • Departure: Port of Islands Marina, south of Marco Island, via the Faka Union Canal

Motor boat tour in Ten Thousand Islands, Everglades National Park

A knowledgeable tour guide will share insights about the Ten Thousand Islands, including fascinating history, cultural and ecological significance.

This is one of the best boat tours in the Everglades for wildlife viewing and nature observation. Traditional motorboats are much quieter than airboats, which are more of a noisy “thrill ride” and tend to scare wildlife away.

Although wildlife is unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed, this tour offers a good chance to observe a wide variety of bird species, dolphins, manatees, alligators and more.

Tickets and Availability

Tickets can be purchased online, or in the Lookout Tower gift shop in Everglades City, depending on availability.

View Tour Availability and Details

After booking you will receive a detailed email with information for your tour.

Unfortunately pets are not allowed on this tour due to the length and other factors. Please see this page for dog-friendly tours .

Guests are advised to bring sun protection, polarized sunglasses, and to dress appropriately for the weather and an outdoor adventure. Coolers, food and drinks are allowed and are welcome on board.

There is a “Ship’s Store” convenience store at the marina where this tour departs, which sells snacks and drinks. There are souvenirs for sale, and a limited selection of supplies.

Note: This tour previously departed from the Everglades National Park Gulf Coast Visitor Center. Due to visitor center construction, this tour now departs from the Port of Islands Marina, south of Marco Island.

Hiking the Thousand Islands National Park in the Fall

Thousand Islands Ontario is an amazing destination for outdoor adventures and hiking, especially in the fall. There are so many things to see in the Thousand Islands that you could easily spend a few days here. The Thousand Islands National Park is a beautiful natural space to explore and be at one with nature. Allow me to whisk you off to the Thousand Islands Ontario to show you how to hike one of Canada’s smallest national parks.

National Parks in Ontario

Have you had the chance to visit the Thousand Islands National Park or any of Canada’s national parks ? There are six national parks in Ontario, including the Thousand Islands National Park. The other national parks in Ontario include: Bruce Peninsula National Park , Georgian Bay Islands National Park , Point Pelee National Park, Pukaskwa National Park, and the Rouge National Urban Park in the Greater Toronto Area.

Facts About the Thousand Islands National Park

Thousand Islands National Park at Landon Bay Entrance

The Thousand Islands National Park, established in 1904, consists of 20 islands and three mainland properties. Even though it’s one of the smallest national parks in Canada, you’re truly spoiled for choice when it comes to outdoor adventures. Many areas of the national park are only accessible by boat, whether you’re kayaking , canoeing, or traveling by a powerboat to reach the islands. 1000 Islands hiking is more accessible through the three mainland trail systems at Landon Bay , Mallorytown Landing, and Jones Creek.

1000 Islands in the Fall - Fall Foliage of the Thousand Islands Ontario Canada

The Thousand Islands in Ontario are part of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve , a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with one of the highest regions of biodiversity in Canada. The Frontenac Arch is an ancient granite ridge. The space where this ridge intersects with the Saint Lawrence River and the Great Lakes forms the Thousand Islands. The landscape consists of rugged shorelines, enchanting pine tree forests, and the peaks of ancient mountains that actually form the numerous islands. Animals that live at the Thousand Islands National Park include deer, coyotes, porcupines, foxes, beavers, skunks, rabbits, raccoons, turkey vultures, and many more. The region is home to many threatened species, like the black rat snake (Canada’s largest reptile), the osprey, the great blue heron, and a small heron known as the least bittern.

How to Hike in the Thousand Islands Ontario

There are many ways to experience the beauty of the Thousand Islands National Park. Hiking is such a wonderful activity to explore natural spaces in a peaceful and serene way. There are numerous opportunities for 1000 Islands hiking, both on the mainland and the islands themselves. While it’s such an adventure to take a kayak or canoe to the islands of the national park, there are places where you can go hiking right off the main roads near Gananoque.

Map of the Thousand Islands National Park

If you’re thinking about planning to hike around the Thousand Islands Ontario, I recommend heading to the official website to check out their maps. There is also a visitor’s center at Mallorytown Landing if you’d like to discuss your hikes with the experts and pick up some maps. You can go hiking at the following islands of the Thousand Islands National Park:

  • Kingston Islands
  • Admiralty Islands
  • Lake Fleet Islands
  • Navy Islands
  • Middle Islands
  • Grenadier Island
  • East Islands

If you’re looking for an easy day hike to admire the fall foliage, I recommend planning to hike at one of the mainland properties (Mallorytown Landing, Jones Creek, or Landon Bay). There are many trails and loop trails at all three spaces to check out. I decided to hike the trails at Landon Bay because they didn’t seem too difficult. It was my first hiking trip after breaking my ankle and I wanted to ease back into hiking. I was also intrigued by the “Lookout Trail” as this usually means that there will be a good view.

Map of the Thousand Islands National Park hiking at Landon Bay

Hiking at Landon Bay (Thousand Islands National Park)

To reach the Landon Bay section of the Thousand Islands National Park, take exit 647 from Highway 401. The actual address of this section is: 302 Thousand Islands Parkway, Lansdowne, Ontario, K0E 1L0. Put that address into your GPS and you’ll be there in no time.

As I visited in mid-October (after Canadian Thanksgiving), the main gate in the driveway to the national park was closed. However, that’s not a problem. Simply park your car across the street from the main entrance in the large space facing Halsteads Bay. You might want to walk down to the waterfront and admire the views at Halsteads Bay before your hike. It’s very pretty.

Halsteads Bay in the Thousand Islands Ontario Canada

Take care as you cross the road to access the trails at the Thousand Islands National Park. This road is very busy and cars do travel really fast here, so be careful as you navigate your way across it. You’ll walk past the main entrance and there won’t be any fees to enter at this time of the year. You’ll discover the entry point to the trails on your right. There will be a rock archway at the start of the Donevan Trail (the blue trail on the map).

Gate down in the fall at Thousand Islands National Park - Ontario Canada

Hiking the Donevan Trail to the Lookout Trail

There are several hiking trails at the Landon Bay area of the Thousand Islands National Park. You can spend a couple of hours here hiking all of them. The Donevan Trail is the largest of them all (the blue trail) and it connects to several other hiking trails: the Bay Trail (orange trail), the Halstead Creek Trail (also marked in orange), the smaller Moran Trail and Riverview Trail (both marked in red), the Garden Trail (in gray), and the Lookout Trail (the yellow trail). I hiked sections of the Donevan Trail and the Lookout Trail.

1000 Islands Hiking - The Donevan Trail / Blue Trail at Thousand Islands National Park

The Donevan Trail winds through the forest, so it’s a great space to be in the middle of the fall colors. The trail is an easy hike and it’s relatively flat the entire way. There are many trail markers featuring the color of the trail that you’re hiking, so it’s easy to navigate your way around the park. I highly recommend that you hike up the steeper Lookout Trail to the top. It’s really not that difficult of a climb, and it won’t take you that long to hike to the top. There are amazing views at the top of the Lookout Trail of the national park and its waterways. It’s one of the best places to check out the fall foliage of the Thousand Islands Ontario from above.

What is the Peak Season for Fall Colors in the 1000 Islands?

While the Thousand Islands Ontario are lovely to visit all year long, the fall foliage puts on an amazing display through September and October. The peak season for fall colors changes each year. It’s a safe bet that you’ll view the best fall foliage when visiting the Thousand Islands in October.

All of the photos you’ll see in this blog post were taken in mid-October. Even though I visited in the middle of October, you can see that many of the trees are still green. You might want to consider planning your trip for late October for the maximum amount of fall colors.

Hiking at Landon Bay - Thousand Islands Ontario

I realize that the Thousand Islands National Park isn’t a provincial park, but Ontario Parks has a fabulous fall foliage map that updates throughout the season. Even though you won’t see the 1000 Islands listed on there, you can get an idea of the fall colors by looking at the forecasts of nearby provincial parks. If you see that Frontenac or Charleston Lake have brilliant fall colors, chances are that the Thousand Islands Ontario will also be in its peak foliage season.

Fall Activities in the 1000 Islands

Aside from 1000 Islands hiking, there are many fall activities in the Thousand Islands region of Canada. If you don’t mind the crisper and cooler weather, you can do many of the same activities that you’d do during the summer months. Visiting the Thousand Islands in October is such a treat: the region is at its prettiest with the fall colors, and it’s not crowded at all. When I visited on a Friday in October, there were hardly any other people around.

1000 Islands Tower

The 1000 Islands Tower is open during the fall season and provides some of the most spectacular views of the region. Take the elevator all the way to the top of the first observation deck and enjoy the 360 degree panoramic views. You can enjoy breathtaking scenery from three observation decks. Please note that the 1000 Islands Tower operates until the third weekend of October. Check the official website for opening dates and times to avoid disappointment.

1000 Islands Tower - Thousand Islands Ontario Canada

1000 Islands Cruises

Looking to take in the scenery of the 1000 Islands by boat? Why not take a 1000 Islands cruise to drift past the rugged shorelines and spectacular island landscape. You can cruise along the St. Lawrence River to the 1000 Islands on a boat tour from downtown Kingston . Looking to combine your tour into a grand adventure? Check out this incredible 3 day tour from NYC : hike the canyon at Watkins Glen, visit Niagara Falls, tour around Toronto, and take a cruise at the Thousand Islands.

Kayaking at the Thousand Islands Ontario

If you don’t mind wearing warmer clothing, kayaking at the 1000 Islands is an amazing adventure. You have the freedom to explore many islands that are only accessible by small boat. You can kayak to several islands that are part of the Thousand Islands National Park for day hikes. There’s also the possibility of extending your stay by spending the night at an oTENTik cabin . It’s a bit like glamping as it’s a cross between a rustic cabin and a tent. You’ll find oTENTik camping accommodations on McDonald Island, Gordon Island, and on the mainland at Mallorytown Landing.

Helicopter Tour of the Thousand Islands

Thousand Islands Ontario from up above in the fall

For a grand adventure of viewing the fall colors at the Thousand Islands Ontario, take a helicopter tour of the 1000 Islands . A helicopter tour is an exhilarating and unforgettable adventure. Viewing the fall foliage from up above is one of the best things to do in the Thousand Islands. You can choose from a 10 minute, 20 minute, or 30 minute helicopter to admire the forests and castles of the 1000 Islands.

Visiting Pumpkinferno, the Pumpkin Lantern Festival

While Pumpkinferno is a little bit of a drive from the Thousand Islands Ontario, it’s possible to make a day trip of it all. I drove from Toronto (from my home in Mississauga, Ontario) for a 1000 Islands hiking trip, checking out Pumpkinferno at night, and returning back home all in one day.

Pumpkinferno pumpkin lanterns in Ontario Canada - Fall Festival in Ontario

After hiking at Thousand Islands National Park, I stopped for a quick bite to eat at the Spitfire Cafe in Brockville, Ontario. This sweet little cafe is also very vegan friendly. I ordered a vegan ham and cheese toasted sandwich, a vegan chocolate peanut butter brownie, and an Americano. Everything was lovingly prepared and super yummy.

Spitfire Cafe in Brockville, Ontario - Vegan eats

Next, you’ve simply got to check out Pumpkinferno at Upper Canada Village. It’s a dazzling display of carved pumpkin lanterns that’s super detailed and impressive. Pumpkinferno runs from the end of September throughout October on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Read all about my review of Pumpkinferno and watch the video above to see this pumpkin lantern festival in action.

Pumpkinferno pumpkin lantern festival in Ontario Canada

If you find that it’s a little too much driving all in one day, I suggest staying in Morrisburg or Brockville for the evening. The best hotels in Morrisburg are the McIntosh Country Inn and Conference Centre and the Russell Manor Bed and Breakfast . In the nearby city of Brockville, you’ll find more popular hotel chains like the Travelodge by Wyndham Brockville , the Super 8 by Wyndham Brockville , the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Brockville , and the Comfort Inn Brockville . I recommend checking out all of the hotel reviews in Brockville before you book your overnight stay to the Thousand Islands Ontario region.

Check out all of my pictures from the 1000 Islands in one convenient place. You can also click the “buy” button to purchase any of our pictures!

I hope that you’re now thinking about planning your fall vacation to the Thousand Islands Ontario. I highly recommend making an entire day of it, whether you go hiking at the Thousand Islands National Park, kayak to hike at several islands , visit the 1000 Islands Tower, book a helicopter tour, or combine your trip to the 1000 Islands with the Pumpkinferno fall festival. I sum up all of the things to do in the 1000 Islands in this comprehensive Thousand Islands travel guide .

After reading your article, I'll definitely plan a trip there in summer. Sights, even in the pictures, are so welcoming. And I guess I'll be surprised even more once I get there. As an alternative to kayaking, I would also suggest paddleboarding. That could be interesting as well.

Thousand Islands Things To Do

Thousand Islands National Park is among the most parks in all of Canada. Discover castles, culture, wildlife and more in the Thousand Islands.

Thousand Islands National Park Things To Do

Thousand Islands National Park is one of my all-time favorite places to visit in Ontario. The fresh air of the St. Lawrence River mixed with the breathtaking views of the chain of islands just off the shores makes the Thousand Islands, Ontario, unlike any other place in the world. It’s no wonder that Thousand Islands NP has become among the most famous  national parks in Ontario .

Whether you’re looking for hiking, boat cruises, interpretive programs, or Thousand Islands camping, there are loads of things to do in the Thousand Islands for families. We’ve visited the Thousand Islands National Park with kids many times. And through these trips, I’ve racked up some of the best tips for experiencing the Thousand Islands for yourself.

Where Is Thousand Islands National Park Ontario

Table of Contents

Camping in the Thousand Islands Canada

By Canadian national park standards, Thousand Islands National Park is pretty tiny. The park covers just a 24.4 square km (15.16 square mile) area between Landon Bay and Mallorytown Landing, while the islands stretch between the cities of Brockville and Kingston. Positioned on the eastern shores of the St. Lawrence River, the Thousand Islands sits right on the border of the United States and is a popular destination for both Canadian and American travelers.

The main entrance of Thousands Islands park is located on the Mallorytown inland just off of the Thousand Islands Parkway. The Thousand Islands Parkway runs along the St. Lawrence River from Gananoque to Butternut Bay, where it reconnects with HWY 401. The island chain of Thousand Islands park stretches through the St. Lawrence River. This means that much of Thousand Islands Ontario is only accessible via boat.

The Thousand Islands are believed to have been inhabited as far back as 10,000 years ago. Indigenous people arrived following the end of the last ice age and established routes along the St. Lawrence River. There are even pictographs visible on some of the shoreline cliffs. Although many have been damaged by weather and vandalism. For a look at some well-preserved pictographs nearby, consider a trip to  Bon Echo Provincial Park .

Although the Thousand Islands consists of about 1,864 islands, there are only 21 islands within Thousand Islands National Park itself. The islands of the park are said to be the granite remnants of an ancient mountain range that once divided the landscape.

Although it’s small, the Thousand Islands, Ontario is rich in biodiversity. The park was established to protect this part of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve. Thousand Islands National Park was the first Canadian national park east of the Rocky Mountains. It was established in 1904. Since then, it has grown to be one of the most popular destinations in the country.

Visiting Thousand Islands With Kids

Explore The Thousand Islands Visitor Centre

Every great visit to Thousand Islands National Park starts at the Thousand Islands National Park Visitor Centre. You can plan your park visit and learn about what makes this park such an incredible part of the province. You can get a hold of Thousand Islands National Park maps, access bbq facilities, and take in the park exhibits.

Families will find loads of nature programs, a playground, picnic shelters, and barbecues. Kids can join a scavenger hunt, geocaching activities, and even see live animal displays.

Thousand Islands Camping

Family camping is one of the best things to do in Thousand Islands National Park. Whether you want to enjoy one of the riverside oTENTiks or cabins or experience traditional tent camping in the Thousand Islands, there really isn’t a bad campsite in Thousand Islands National Park.

Waking up with a view of the sparkling water and countless islands before you is spectacular. And Thousand Islands camping makes for the perfect way to start a day exploring the park and the areas nearby. There are 5 oTENTIK sites located on the mainland in Mallorytown Landing. And there are 25 island campsites scattered throughout the park. If you’re interested in camping on one of the Thousand Islands, you will need a boat or watercraft.

All campsites in Thousand Islands National Park come with fire pits and picnic tables. Cabins and oTENTiks also include a charcoal bbq (bring your own charcoal), and Muskoka chairs. Facilities and quality throughout the Thousand Islands camping spots can vary from island to island. If you have specific needs for your Thousand Island camping experience, connect with the park staff at  (613) 923-5261 .

There are no Thousand Islands RV campgrounds available. If you’re taking an RV to Thousand Islands National Park, consider visiting the  Ivy Lea KOA . It’s situated just a short distance from the Landon’s Bay Centre.

Thousand Islands oTENTiks

oTENTik accommodations at Thousand Islands National Park are among my favorite. They all offer amazing views of the water. The Thousand Islands National Park oTENTiks sleep up to six people on bunk-style beds and provide tables, chairs, lighting, power for charging electronics, and a charcoal barbecue.

There are five oTENTiks available on Gordon Island, 2 on McDonald Island (only accessible via boat), and five available at Mallorytown Landing. You’ll need to make sure you pack bedding or sleeping bags (2x queen size bed and 2x double beds), food, dishes, and enough energy to explore all the things to do in the Thousand Islands.

Thousand Islands National Park Hiking

Both Mallorytown Landing and Landon Bay have a series of great Thousand Islands hiking trails. The hiking trails in Thousand Islands National Park range from easy 20-minute strolls to moderate two-hour hikes. Landon Bay offers the most extensive trail network in the park, although a series of accessible walks can be found near the visitor center in Mallorytown Landing.

The Lookout Trail is famous for having one of the most breathtaking natural views in the area. Make sure to pick up a map to discover the best hiking trails in Thousand Islands Park.

Boating And Paddling The Thousand Islands

One of the best ways to explore Thousand Islands National Park is by boat. From the water, you can experience shipwrecks,  Thousand Island castles , and the stunning landscapes of the St. Lawrence. You may even get the chance to see locals wildlife such as turtles and bald eagles.

Thousand Islands National Park doesn’t rent boats or paddle gear themselves. However, there are several businesses nearby that offer rentals for a few hours or a few days. What To Pack For Visiting The Thousand Islands Canada

Before you head out to the Thousand Islands in Ontario, prepare for your visit by packing what you need. It will give you more time to explore the islands instead of running around chasing after forgotten items. If you’re camping in the Thousand Islands, you might want to check out our complete guide to family camping . It has a list of everything you may want to bring for camping with kids. Otherwise, here’s the basics of what to pack for exploring the Thousand Islands Canada and Thousand Islands National Park.

  • Boating License (Optional): If you’re going to be using a powered boat in the Thousand Islands, you’ll likely need a valid boating license. These are not required for canoes, kayaks, and some houseboats. You can apply for the license here .
  • Tent: Remember that tents sizes are for the number of bodies a tent can fit. Not the number of bodies that a tent can fit comfortably. If You are a family of four, consider a 6 person tent like this one .
  • Sleeping bags: Pick something comfortable and light like this one for summer camping , or a cooler rated one for spring and autumn camping.
  • Bug spray (something with DEET, especially during the early and late season to keep black flies and mosquitoes at bay)
  • Cooking supplies (camping pots, plates, cutlery). I use a set like this one and it’s lasted me over 15 years so far.
  • Water bottles: Personally I prefer using filtered water bottles. They can be refilled anywhere and ensure clean water is always at hand. You can check out my list of the 5 best filtered water bottles here .
  • Water (We recommend bringing a  large, refillable water container )
  • Matches and  fire starters
  • Swimsuits and towels
  • Fishing poles and bait
  • Hiking shoes
  • First Aid Kit
  • Camping stove  and propane (even if you are planning on cooking on the fire pit it’s important to remember that there are sometimes fire bans)

Final Thoughts On Visiting Thousand Islands National Park Canada

Whether you’re looking at Thousand Islands camping or exploring the Thousand Islands by boat or on foot, it will continue to be one of the best outdoor spaces in Ontario. It’s the perfect place to explore by water. But there are lots of options to explore by land as well. Visiting Thousand Islands National Park will make it very clear why it’s one of the most popular National Parks in Ontario.

Thousand Islands Canada Guide

Tuesday 21st of March 2023

Great post, very informative. I have a question I hope you could answer. If we are planning to paddle to our campsite with kayaks, how would you recommend taking our supplies? We would have our tent, bedding, cooler and food. There's four of us and we each have single kayaks and they aren't very big. Look forward to your reply. Thank you.

This is one of the most challenging aspects of kayak camping. I've found that strapping a couple of dry bags to the top of the kayaks has been a helpful way to get around it. You'll want to get the heaviest stuff into the lowest parts of your hold, and the lighter times such as sleeping bags on top so that you're not too top-heavy.

Trip planning tips

  • If you’re looking for a more tranquil experience, consider that July and August are the most popular months for visitors to Thousand Islands National Park. June and September are quieter with less boat traffic.
  • Check out our facilities and services page to pick the island that best suits your needs. Browse the availability of garbage and recycling collection, campsites, picnic shelters, wood stoves, and barbeques on different islands.
  • Docks, beaching sites, composting toilets and picnic tables are available on all serviced islands. Drinking water and bathrooms with electricity and flush toilets are available on Central Grenadier Island.
  • Enjoy hiking trails, campfire pits, and great swimming on the islands.
  • Be sure to use a navigational chart when boating in the area.
  • Groups of islands have ideal conditions for paddling: protection from wind and lower speed limits for other boats. Check our “ Getting here ” page for access points.
  • Camping reservations are recommended. However if you choose campsites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis, paddling in groups of islands provides easy access to alternative sites if one island is full.
  • All vessels must have a valid mooring or beaching permit. These permits must be purchased on arrival at the island. See our park fees page for a full list of fees.
  • Knowledgeable island attendants circulate throughout the islands to serve you and maintain facilities, sell firewood, assist with fee payment, help with concerns, and make your experience a positive one.

It’s natural beauty that keeps families coming back to the 1000 Islands year after year. Active visitors flock to the 1000 Islands to experience the vast woods and water.

More than 15 New York State Parks dot Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River and several islands. In Canada, the parks of the St. Lawrence is a chain of historic and recreation sites found along the river. Comprised of 21 different islands in the St. Lawrence River and three mainland properties on the 1000 Islands Parkway, the Thousand Islands National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Canada.

Cyclists and motorcycle riders love the slow pace of the open roads that run along our shorelines while cross-country skiers and hikers take advantage of numerous trails in public parks and maintained by nature conservancies. Experienced fishing guides and charter captains make catching – and eating – freshwater fish a reality for most.
