A truly amazing experience

This tour was an extraordinarily beautiful and special time for our family. We started in Cusco, where we stayed 2+ days to acclimatize (a good call). Then a light first day to Chinchero (seeing traditional crafts) and Zurite (touring an Inca ruin and walking about 2 hours back to the hotel. The hotel was simple and very nice. Our guide Piero Leon Rodriguez was fantastic. He is a consummate professional, passionate about his work and knowledgeable about the trip to an almost absurd extent. He took a daunting 30 mile trek over four days and broke it down so that, for example, he would say, “The next 10 minutes will have two small uphills and then a straight section of Andean plain and then a nice spot in the shade for a break.” He predicted our arrival and departure times to an uncanny degree of accuracy. The food in the Zurite hotel was amazing, and we found out that the person preparing the dishes would be our chef on the trek. He and the horses sped ahead so that as we arrived at camp for lunch or dinner, a hot delicious soup was already waiting. How did he do that? The landscape was beyond stunning, and we were the only travelers we saw for four days. It was easy to imagine people crossing the mountains following the same path hundreds of years ago. We handled the altitude fine, with only momentary periods of dull headaches as our saturation of oxygen fell to the mid 80s. This is to be expected at 15,000 feet, where oxygen pressure is about 56% of that at sea level. Piero always put our safety first, telling us to let us know if we were not doing well, as he would be happy to consider a plan b or plan c that would be less strenuous. The first and second mountain passes were astonishing in their beauty. Our photos, even a few days later, are jaw dropping and it’s hard to believe we made it so high. Piero introduces us to communities of five or so families high in the Andes. We had a chance to see their livestock and kitchens and talk to some of the leaders about their lives and challenges. It was inspiring that Andina travel paid to provide 50+ alpacas to one of the communities as a thank you for tours coming through. I also appreciated the question on their questionnaire about what else they should consider investing in for these communities. Piero pointed out amazing indigenous orchids and flowers along the route. Our flower photos alone are worth the price of the trip. We saw all sorts of animals, from a tarantula (kept as a pet) to a hawk to feral bulls. Despite being far from internet range, and far far off the grid, we never felt unsafe. That was largely because of Piero and the others, as well as the presence of the rescue horse, which we referred to as meatball. Fortunately we never needed the horse for more than occasionally carrying a Day pack. Piero gave us an extra tour of the Incan ruins in Ollantaytambo, where we emerged to a great hotel and hot shower after two nights in the field. The finale at macchu piccu was incredible. Piero explained much of the history, science, archeoastronomy and sociology of this wonder of the world. It helped the weather was great, allowing for more amazing photos. It is no understatement to say that this was the most amazing trip we have ever taken, and the professionalism and care of Andina Travel made it possible. Piero is truly a leyenda (a legend)— as promised by the very helpful Franco in the home office in Cusco. Franco was super responsive in the months and weeks leading up to the trip, answering whatsapp questions within minutes. All told: highly, highly recommend.

Thank you so much Joshua for your great comment. We really appreciate your confidence in Andina Travel. It’s our passion to share our knowledge and teach you more about this wonderful region, its environement, animals, flora and fauna. It’s great to hear that we achieved our goal! Nine of us in an extended familiy went on the four day inca trail trek. Over-all the organisation was good. The two guides: Piero and Juan were excellent and we can't praise them enough. One of our party is a celiac, which we advised them of in advance. The first meal did not cater for her but she gave the cook a translated card explaining the nature of the disease and risks of cross-contamination. After that he did an excellent job of cooking good meals for her. We thought the quality of the food was better than our previous climb of Killimanjaro.

Dear David, thank you for your great comment and the confidence you have in Andina Travel. We're happy that you could find a solution concerning your relative's food intolerance. Our cooks always use just the best and local ingredients during the treks. It's a pleasure to hear that you enjoyed the food! We hope to hear from you in the future and don’t hesitate to contact us for planning your next trip in Peru. Kind regards, Sophie Neuner Customer Relations Manager Andina Travel Treks & Eco Adventures

We did private Premium Inca Trail 5D/4N with fantastic guide - Juan de Dios. We really had wonderful time. The trail is alternative to Inca Trail, and what makes it special, is that you do not meet other tourist - just local people and their animals. Everything was very good organized - from e-mail communication (I had dozens of questions which were answered in details) to our food, and details of our trip. Juan is amazing - he knows absolutely everything about Inca history, about local flora and fauna (he could name species in Latin, Spanish and Quechua), he is very friendly and helpful. He is very passionate about his work, what makes stories he tells even more colorful. Our crew was amazing. They were ready before we waked up, they make sure everything was set up before we arrive. They treated animals with kindness and respect. Our cook - Lorenzo - was amazing too! He prepared four-meal dishes (starter, soup, main course and dessert) in the mountains, which is already amazing, but he also made a cake without an oven! Once I felt tired and decided to skip dinner, he came to my tent and ask, that maybe I can have at least half bowl of a soup. After such experience you just feel really special. If you decide to do this trek, I highly recommend asking for Juan to be your guide and Lorenzo to be your cook. For us this experience is really unforgettable.

Dear Nick, thank you for your great comment and your confidence in Andina Travel. We always try to offer the best service from answering all your questions to providing assistance and sharing our knowledge during the trek. Both Juan and Lorenzo are excellent staff who try to make your journey as pleasant as possible. We'll pass your positive feedback on to them. We hope to hear from you in the future and don’t hesitate to contact us for planning your next trip in Peru. Kind regards, Sophie Neuner Customer Relations Manager Andina Travel Treks & Eco Adventures

We hiked with Juan De Dios and had an incredible time! Andina travel had clear communication to plan our trip via email, and was flexible with us to pick us up from an alternate city. Juan was truly amazing! He knew details of every plant, animal, and archaeological ruin. He encouraged us to hang back from the crowds, which allowed us to have Inca trail to ourselves and Juan timed our arrival to the Sun Gate perfectly with sunset. Juan helped us get the most out of our trip by avoiding crowds, exploring interesting overlooks sites, and recommending the perfect photo opportunities. Juan was a guide among guides, giving advice and helping other guides we saw along the way. I felt very fortunate to be traveling with a guide who was so knowledgeable, passionate, positive, and fun. I would highly recommend anyone considering this trip to do the hike with Juan!

Dear Jared, thank you for your positive feedback. From answering your questions right at the beginning to sharing our knowledge during the trek we always try to offer you the best service. It's great to hear that you also were able to avoid the crowds on the Inca Trail. Juan definitely is an excellent guide and we're happy that you enjoyed your trip with him! We hope to hear from you in the future and don’t hesitate to contact us for planning your next trip in Peru. I just came back from hiking the Quillatambo trail with some friends. It is a beautiful off-the-beaten-path trek through the Andean Highlands and you get to experience the rural life in Peru. I definitely recommend!

Dear Sophie, thanks so much for your comment. The Quillatambo trail truly is an amazing experience and leads through vast Andean Highlands far away from the crowds. We hope to hear from you in the future and don’t hesitate to contact us for planning your next trip in Peru. False advertising, broken promises, and questionable ethics. Andina didn't provide all the services we paid for, and we would have received the same services for less money elsewhere. THE BAD: -FALSE ADVERTISING: We booked with Andina (and paid more) because their website promised a bit more luxury on the Inca Trail than other operators, specifically a latrine tent, hot water for washing, drinking water, and transfer to the hotel. We were not provided these services. To add insult to injury, we had to pay for bathrooms and water along the trail. -BROKEN PROMISES: When we brought the above problems to the attention of management they promised us, in writing, a refund of $230 within a few hours. They did not do the refund, even after two weeks of us following up on it. -QUESTIONABLE ETHICS: In the course of communications about the refund, Andina became increasingly defensive to cover their false advertising and broken promises, eventually blaming the guide and us! They wrote an email to our guide in which they quoted us saying something we never said. We then had to defend our (freelance) guide so her reputation wasn't implicated in Andina's mess. I'm sure if Andina responds to this review they will accuse me of something they made up in an effort to clear their name. THE GOOD: -Customer service leading up to the excursions was prompt and informative. -Inca trail tour guide was excellent. -Office was in a convenient location. OTHER INFO: -In the three excursions we did, Andina was not the actual operator. They sub-contracted the tour to other companies. Save yourself the cost of the middle man and contract straight with the actual operator. -Payments get processed via a shell company in the USA, and the payment operation feels a bit outdated. They send you a bill in Excel and you have to click a link to pay. -Sub-contracted drivers usually drove very aggressively and unsafely (although that seemed common everywhere in the area). -The actual (sub-contracted) tour guide and activities were average to outstanding, depending on the excursion. We did three excursions: 4-day classic Inca trail, rainbow mountain, and sacred valley. -My review is not on the quality of the inherent beauty and awe of the places we visited (all of which are undeniably magical), rather on the tour coordinator services provided by Andina.

Terrible service by Cristina and Julio. I was travelling with a baby and Cristina booked us as travelling separately, I asked for a connecting flight and got booked 2 separate flight and had to do customs and pick up luggage, we paid extra for better seats so we could have more space for the baby and she sat me and my sister in opposite ends of the plain! its hard enough to travel with a baby, so doing customs caused us our connection and we had to spend the night waiting for the next plain.

Terrible experience. I was traveling with a 15 month old baby and my sibling for help. The agent Booked the wrong seats, we paid extra for a window seat and more space when we arrived at the Ac counter they had no record of that and we were not even booked as travelling together so we had separate seats! Also I asked for a connecting flight from Toronto to Argentina so I did not have to worry about the luggage meanwhile after she confirmed several times I had a window seat, we got stuck in the m

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE

TERRIBLE experience!!! Never again. They did not issue a ticket for my infant, i had to call them from the airport so they can issue the ticket. Coming back to Canada our itinerary (the one that the agency emailed to us) say that the flight was at 12:30pm...but bo.. it was at 3:00pm.. the girl at the counter say that the agency send us a "template"....so here we are with 2 babies at the airport waiting for hours because of this horrible travel agency. They DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!!

People are extending their vacations, and eco-travel experts say it could be more sustainable

  • Tourists globally are spending an average of one more day at destinations compared to 2019.
  • Longer vacations are more sustainable, reducing carbon emissions from fewer flights.
  • Sustainability experts recommend fewer, longer trips to minimize environmental impact.

Insider Today

Worldwide, vacations are getting longer.

According to a recent study by Mastercard Economics Institute , tourists around the globe are spending an average of one more day in destinations compared to 2019. In Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, people are extending their trips for two days longer than before the pandemic.

This is good news — not just for vacationers — but for the health of the planet, as travel can be harmful to the environment .

Related stories

"We are in the biggest race of our time — race to net-zero carbon emissions," Paloma Zapata, the CEO of Sustainable Travel International, previously told Business Insider. "And when we travel, we consume a lot of resources."

Fewer, longer trips are more sustainable

Sustainability experts previously told BI that frequent, short trips are more harmful to the environment than fewer, longer trips .

"Fewer but longer trips mean fewer air miles, more money in local hands, and you'll have a more relaxing trip, too," Justin Francis, the cofounder and CEO of the UK-based trip evaluation company Responsible Travel , said.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency , 9% of transportation carbon emissions  in 2022 came from air travel, and 57% came from light-duty vehicles. And according to Zapata, flights make up at least half of a trip's total carbon emissions.

If those extending their vacations are also taking fewer trips, they're ultimately booking fewer flights, reducing carbon emissions in the process.

This is especially true for those traveling long distances, Jessica Blotter, CEO and cofounder of Kind Travel , a public benefit corporation, told BI. She suggests stretching long-distance trips to maximize the experience so you won't crave another journey anytime soon.

"Booking multiple, long-haul trips per year is not sustainable or carbon-friendly," she said.

If you want to be more eco-friendly while at your destination, experts also recommend staying at sustainable hotels , dining at locally-owned restaurants, and shopping for souvenirs crafted by locals.

About eSIM on iPad

Learn what an eSIM is, which iPad models support eSIM, and how to set up an eSIM on your iPad.

What is eSIM

An eSIM is an industry-standard digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical SIM. You can set up a cellular data plan on some iPad models using an eSIM. An eSIM is a convenient and secure way to connect to cellular data on your iPad when you're away from Wi-Fi.

On your iPad, you can store eight or more eSIMs, which can be used as needed. When traveling internationally, you can roam with your existing carrier or purchase an eSIM from a local carrier that supports eSIM in the country or region you are visiting .

Learn more about cellular data on iPad

What you need

An iPad that supports eSIM:

iPad Pro 13-inch (M4) Wi-Fi + Cellular *

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd through 6th generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular

Find out which iPad model you have

* iPad Pro (M4) Wi-Fi + Cellular and iPad Air (M2) Wi-Fi + Cellular models are activated with an eSIM and do not have a physical SIM card.

Use an eSIM

There are multiple ways to activate cellular data on iPad using eSIM. To set up a cellular data plan using an eSIM on your iPad, use eSIM Carrier Activation, transfer your plan from another iPad, join an existing iPhone cellular plan, find a new plan, use a QR code, or use your carrier's iPad app.

Use eSIM Carrier Activation

If your provider supports eSIM Carrier Activation, they can assign a new eSIM to your iPad. If an eSIM was assigned to your iPad when you bought it, turn on your iPad and follow the onscreen instructions. Your eSIM will be installed through setup.

If you contacted your carrier for an eSIM after you set up your iPad, and they set up eSIM Carrier Activation:

When a Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed notification appears, tap it.

In the Settings app, tap Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed.

Tap Continue.

If the plan you activated replaces the plan on your physical SIM card, remove your SIM card, then restart your iPad.

Transfer your plan from another iPad

Some carriers support eSIM Quick Transfer, which transfers your SIM from your previous iPad to your new iPad without needing to contact your carrier. If you're asked to transfer your cellular plan during setup, follow the onscreen instructions.

You can also transfer your eSIM from another iPad after setup:

Make sure your iPad is using the latest version of iPadOS .

Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Transfer iPad Plan.

If you see a Transfer button next to the line you want, tap it.

Follow the onscreen instructions to transfer service. You might need to wait a few minutes for activation to complete.

If you don't see a Transfer button, or if you can't transfer a plan, you might need to contact your carrier. 1

Join an existing iPhone plan

If supported by your carrier, you can set up a cellular data plan by adding your iPad to an existing iPhone cellular plan.

Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Join iPhone Plan, then follow the onscreen instructions.

If you can't select Join iPhone Plan, make sure that you enabled Wi-Fi on the iPad, and that you're signed in with the same Apple ID on both your iPhone and iPad.

Find and setup a new plan

Some carriers support purchasing and setting up a cellular data plan directly on your iPad. To see a list of local carriers available, make sure location services are on. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn on Location Services.

Go to Settings > Cellular Data > Find a New Plan.

Select a carrier from the list of local carriers.

Follow the onscreen instructions to set up and activate your new cellular data plan on your iPad.

Use a QR code

You can use a QR code from your carrier to activate an eSIM on your iPad.

Activate an eSIM using a QR code while setting up your iPad for the first time:

When you get to the Set Up Cellular screen, tap Use QR code.

Follow the onscreen instructions.

Activate an eSIM using a QR code after setting up your iPad:

Contact your carrier to get a QR code.

Open the Camera app and scan your QR code. When the Cellular Plan Detected notification appears, tap it.

If you're using an iPad with iPadOS 17.4 or later, and you get a QR from your carrier in an email or from the carrier's webpage, touch and hold the QR code, then tap Add eSIM.

Tap Add Cellular Plan.

Your carrier may require the use of a confirmation code for additional authentication. Enter the confirmation code provided by the carrier when prompted.

Other eSIM activation methods

Some carriers may support other eSIM activation methods to help you to set up a cellular data plan on your iPad.

If your carrier sends you a link to download and activate your eSIM:

On your iPad with iPadOS 17.4 or later, tap the link.

When the Activate New eSIM notification appears, tap Allow.

Use a carrier app

If your carrier supports activating eSIM using an app, download your carrier's app from the App Store and follow the onscreen instructions.

Use eSIM while traveling internationally with your iPad

Learn about the options and benefits of using eSIM while traveling abroad.

Your existing carrier might include international roaming on select data plans without additional fees. Alternatively, your carrier might offer affordable travel passes or plans that you can purchase ahead of time to use at your destination. International roaming with an eSIM works the same as roaming with a physical SIM.

Many carriers offer data plan options that you can purchase directly on your iPad while traveling . To do this, go to Settings > Cellular Data > Find a New Plan to see available plans in your location. Carriers offer plans that differ by the amount of data and duration. You can also purchase a plan before you travel.

Carriers also offer prepaid data plan options that you can purchase from the carriers' websites or apps before you arrive, or in person after arrival, through a carrier kiosk at the airport, carrier store, or other location. Depending on local regulations, you might be asked to show identification (like your passport) to purchase. Check with individual carriers for details.

In addition to purchasing a prepaid eSIM plan, you might wish to get a postpaid account if you plan to be in another place for an extended time. Carriers around the world that support eSIM offer postpaid plans. Depending on the country or region, you might need proof of local residency, an established local bank account, or credit card.

Find wireless carriers and worldwide service providers that offer eSIM service on iPad .

1 Your iPad is subject to your wireless service provider’s policies, which may include restrictions on transferring a data plan. Contact your carrier for more details. If you aren't sure which carrier to call, go to Settings > Carrier on your iPad.

Governor Healey — currently in Italy — discloses she also traveled to New York, New Mexico last month

Governor Maura Healey spoke Wednesday during an address at a summit organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at the Vatican.

Governor Maura Healey twice left Massachusetts last month to attend a luncheon in New York and later, a four-day gathering with other Democratic governors in New Mexico — out-of-state trips her office did not disclose at the time she took them.

Healey’s office divulged the trips on Thursday in response to a public records request from the Globe seeking the Democrat’s daily calendar and other disclosures from April. That the trips were not previously announced is in keeping with Healey’s policy to not publicly disclose most of her out-of-state travel plans ahead of time.

Healey is currently in Italy, where she’s met with business leaders , had an audience with Pope Francis , and announced a new climate initiative during a summit at the Vatican.

Her office on Thursday included some details of her travel last month in her calendar, which shows Healey flew to New York and back to Massachusetts on April 10, when she attended the “Power 100″ luncheon.

The event, held at The Modern at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, is a regular gathering of female leaders in media and other sectors. Aides to Healey said she was asked to provide remarks about artificial intelligence and how her administration is putting it to use in Massachusetts .

The lunch has long been hosted by Joanna Coles, the former chief content officer of Hearst Magazines who — just days after the event — was announced as one of the new leaders of the news website The Daily Beast.

Healey’s calendar shows she then flew on April 18 to Santa Fe for what a spokesperson said was an event held by the Democratic Governors Association, a partisan group. Healey returned on April 21, according to the records.

A separate ethics disclosure Healey filed shows that the DGA covered $4,400 in costs for the summit at the Eldorado Hotel & Spa. Healey wrote she would “facilitate interstate relationships” with other governors at the four-day event and participate in a series of “solutions-oriented policy conversations.”

Healey in March had initially refused to disclose where she had gone during an out-of-state trip the previous month, saying it was for “personal” travel. At the time, she said that while she intended to share information publicly about “work-related travel,” she would not for her private trips.

She reversed herself days later, acknowledging she had taken a four-day trip to Puerto Rico with her partner. Her aides also said that going forward she would disclose the location of her out-of-state trips, including personal ones, after the fact.

By week’s end, the governor will have spent at least 68 days traveling outside of the state since she took office last year, according to a Globe tally. Democratic Governors Association confabs are among the most frequent reasons she has left, having now attended at least six of the organization’s gatherings in Florida, Colorado, and elsewhere.

She also has taken on a new leadership role for the organization, serving as chair of its Women Governors Fund, a fund-raising effort that targets helping elect Democratic women to governor’s offices.

Healey last year said she would no longer publicly disclose when she planned to leave Massachusetts, citing unspecified security concerns. A regional neo-Nazi group has twice demonstrated outside her Arlington home where she lives with her partner, who has two children. Healey, the first woman and openly gay governor elected in Massachusetts history, later denounced the group for “trying to scare people.”

At the time, her decision to not divulge when she was leaving the state marked a major break from her own past practice and that of her predecessors.

But the approach hasn’t been universal. Her office, for instance, announced she would travel to Italy for the climate change summit in late April — a day after she returned from New Mexico.
