Tom Cruise is literally at the height of his career. The actor sent social media ablaze last night with a torrent of comment about his height when he was seen curiously taller than ever alongside Kate Middleton , Duchess of Cambridge, in London at the premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Cruise, who stands at 5-foot-7, was nearly eye-to-eye on the red carpet with 5-foot-9 Middleton in Prada ‘s suede cutout pumps set on 3-inch stiletto heels — boosting Middleton’s height to 6 feet tall. What a feat for the action star.

So, how did Cruise appear to catapult nearly 4 to 5 inches higher? Dressed in patent leather shoes that incorporated a stacked heel, it looked like it added close to 1.5-2 inches to his frame. According to some observers, the remaining 3 inches needed to reach Middleton’s height could be owed to elevating insoles, which typically support around 1.5 to nearly 3 additional inches, though they need to coordinate with the footwear’s silhouette for a secure fit.

With or without them, Cruise has walked tall for years alongside actresses clad in soaring stiletto heels by embracing astute styling tricks for grand height illusion. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with embracing one’s true height, but Cruise has a history of purposefully looking taller — he likely believes it’s a flattering silhouette that puts confidence in his steps.

Indeed. He has mastered this height hack through subtle, carefully coordinated poses along with the right clothes and shoes.

Cruise’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman , who measures 5-foot-10, was perhaps the most challenging of his red carpet partners, but together, they masterfully erected him throughout their marriage.

Just look to their arrival at the Herb Ritts exhibition opening on Oct. 22, 1992. The couple posed with their heads close together, with Kidman’s head leaning lower into him to deflect from the obvious height difference. Meanwhile, Kidman chose a modest kitten heel compared to Cruise’s taller Cuban heel. Nailed it.

But mistakes can be made. Months earlier on Jan. 18 at the Golden Globe Awards, Kidman, with an arched back and positioned with a mile-long space between their faces, with her chest at his side, made the contrast obvious — even in her kitten heels — as Cruise’s length diminished.

During his marriage to Katie Holmes , who is 5-foot-9, there were plenty of red carpet challenges despite the “Dawson’s Creek” star coming in 1-inch shorter than Kidman. But unlike Kidman, Holmes didn’t embrace kitten heels often — she preferred stilettos around 4 inches. But, by leaving some space between their bodies and Cruise leading ahead of her as they walked hand-in-hand at the Bambi Awards in 2007 in Duesseldorf, Germany, the height differences were minimized as much as possible.

The simplest trick Cruise employs is drawing attention upward through pattern and color. Alongside his 5-foot-9 co-star Cameron Diaz at their “Knight and Day” premiere on July 23, 2010 in Bordeaux, France, Cruise chose a striped ice blue top with dark-wash jeans and dress shoes that had stacked heels. His pose — a slant while partially positioning himself forward next to her — elongated the body as she leaned in and placed one foot behind her.

At the “Knight and Day” premiere in Seville, Spain, on June 16, 2010 he literally took things up a notch in heeled boots that added around 2 extra inches. They looked nearly even while she stood in 4-inch heels.

It’s not often Cruise gets the chance to look taller than his leading ladies, but he did so next to his “Top Gun: Maverick” co-star Jennifer Connelly, who is on equal footing with him, matching at 5-foot-7. Even with Connelly in heels, he managed to gain a fairly generous boost above her while at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18. As seen in his pose, Cruise diminishes the appearance of his width by standing to his side and positioning his body at an angle as she stood vertically and straight ahead. The stacked heels helped too.

The 5-foot-7-inch Cruise stood remarkably tall next to the 5-foot-9-inch Duchess of Cambridge, who was walking the red carpet in a pair of black stiletto heels that elevated her height to 6 feet or more, the Daily Mail said . The duchess gained even more of an illusion of height in her black, full-length Roland Mouret column gown.

And yet, Cruise managed to only look about an inch shorter than Kate, the Daily Mail said. This was especially true when Cruise joined Kate, her husband, Prince William, and Cruise’s co-stars Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly in front of a fighter jet parked in London’s Leicester Square for the premiere.

The Daily Mail said it appears that Cruise, dressed in a black tuxedo, boosted his height with a pair of black shoes with a stacked heel. If Cruise on Thursday resorted to such tricks to enhance his appearance of height, it wouldn’t be the first time in the 59-year-old actor’s history.

There has long been talk about Cruise’s ever-changing height and how he manages to measure up to his taller female co-stars on camera. There’s also been speculation about how he perhaps uses lifts in his shoes or other tricks to look as tall as possible when he appears alongside those women at public events.

Early in his career in the 1980s, Cruise r eportedly listed himself as 5-foot-8 or 5-foot-9. When he appeared in promotional photos with Kelly McGillis, his love interest in the original 1986 “Top Gun” movie, the 5-foot-10-inch actress visibly bent her knees and rested her head on the actor’s shoulder so as to not tower over him.

Cruise’s famously tall ex-wife Nicole Kidman, who is 5 feet 11 inches, admitted that she she had to ditch heels when they first worked together in the 1990 film, “Days of Thunder.”

“They had me in really flat shoes, but you could still see I was taller than him,” Kidman said in an interview that took place when they were still married. “I’d prefer to be smaller, but I don’t mind.”

Kidman insisted that Cruise also didn’t mind that she was taller than him.

“I like the fact that he’s one of the most famous actors in the world and can work with anybody,” she said.

It’s true that Cruise sometimes didn’t look as though he cared if Kidman stood taller than him at public events, such as at the Academy Awards in 1997 when she was wearing shoes with two- or three-inch heels.

Kidman sounded less conciliatory about Cruise’s height issues after he reportedly blindsided her by asking for a divorce in 2001, after 11 years of marriage. On “The David Letterman Show,” Kidman famously joked , “I can wear heels now!”

Cruise’s next wife, Katie Holmes, is 5 feet 9 inches and was reported to have celebrated the same post-divorce perk after she blindsided him in 2012 by asking for a divorce. People talked about her “pulling a Nicole Kidman” when reports surfaced that she splashed out thousands of dollars to buy 15 pairs of Christian Louboutin heels and lingerie at Barneys’ New York, according to Marie Claire .

If nothing else, the actor’s attempt to not appear so short next to the Duchess of Cambridge reminded Cruise watchers of his 2010 red carpet appearances with Cameron Diaz to promote their movie “Knight and Day.” In particular, photos of the co-stars posing at the film’s London premiere, also in Leicester Square, got people talking.

“How is he so tall?” asked a HuffPo headline. When Cruise and Diaz, in four- or five-inch heels, stood for photos together, he looked shorter but not “the five inches he theoretically should be, even with Diaz slightly slouching.”

Cruise’s boots appeared to have a 1-inch heel on the outside, HuffPo said. But oddly, his knees were about the same height as Diaz’s. “How’d he do it?” HuffPo asked “Inside lifts?”

The Daily Mail reported that people can use “inserts,” which are insoles that are placed inside a shoe to lift the wear’s heel up, giving the person some extra height. A more extreme alternative, the so-called “elevator shoe,” sees the lift made an integral part of the footwear, allowing the wearer to boost his height by as many as four inches.

It is part of popular culture: he looks at her from above and she stands on tiptoe to hang on his neck so she can kiss him. The beauty standards imposed by Hollywood for over a century have dictated that men must be taller, always, no matter what and under any circumstances.

It is worth remembering the mockery that 5′5″ Tom Cruise endured when, in the middle of his courtship with 5′9″ Nicole Kidman , he was forced to wear platforms so that she would not be taller than him in photos. Kidman was four inches taller, and any reference to height was practically a taboo topic in the couple’s interviews.

However, for some time now, there have been more and more examples of the opposite, i.e., of men who have no problem standing at shoulder level with their girlfriends or wives on red carpets. There are also increasingly more women who don’t mind if they have to stand on tiptoe to give them a kiss. There’s Zendaya , who is 5′9″, and Tom Holland, who is two inches shorter than her. Holland, by the way, was a great fit for his height to star in the latest Spider-Man saga. What’s more, he took advantage of the promotional tour to make jokes about his height: “Recent studies suggest that the sex life of short men is more intense and satisfying,” he proudly affirmed. Nor has height prevented Rosalía , 5′4″, from being photographed making out with Jeremy Allen White , who is 5′6″.

In an interview with EL PAÍS, Spanish actor Miguel Herrán said not long ago that, although he was aware that beauty was subjective, there was a basic standard he did not meet: height. Herrán confessed that he had suffered as a child when girls told him: “Let’s see, Miguel; I like you, but you’re too short.”

To this day, he still meets people on the street who tell him that they are surprised by his height: “There are certain things in our society about which people are unabashedly opinionated. And there are other things that you can’t mess with. I experienced this the other day at the Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam. A group of Spanish girls came up to me and said: ‘Can we tell you something? We didn’t expect you to be short.’ And I replied: ‘Well, I understand. Because it’s not the first time, I’m not offended. But it’s not nice to hear.’”

One only has to scroll through Tinder, or any other dating app , to see that most straight men include their height in their descriptions if they are tall. In some apps, like Bumble, you can even filter by height. However, a Bumble Spain study says that “Short king spring” is now a trend. “Height is no longer a requirement for over 30% of singles on Bumble, especially for generation Z, where one in three singles admitted that they are now more open to dating someone shorter than them.”

Mental connection

Emotional aspects are gaining a lot of traction in the search for new connections. “In 2024, Spanish singles are living their dating lives in a more open and exploratory way. For many people, this includes dating people [based on factors] beyond their physical appearance,” says the Bumble spokeswoman. Aida López, psychologist and director of Bangardia, concurs, adding that “Sexual role models and those related to physical and mental attraction are changing in the new generations, who attach more value to a mental connection than to a physical one.” The obsession with height has a psychological explanation: “Tall men give women the feeling of protection and security, which makes them feel more feminine,” López explains.

Another factor to consider is that average height varies greatly from country to country. According to a study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the average height of men in Spain is 5′7″. The Danes are the tallest in Europe at an average of 5′10″ tall. So, in Denmark a 5′9″ man would be considered short, while in Spain he would be tall.

Psychologist Andrea Mezquida Ortega observes a change in the mentality of the women who go to her office: “More and more importance is attached to good emotional intelligence, affective responsibility, knowing how to communicate, and being empathetic, over something as unimportant as height,” she explains. At least in this respect, ideal men are no longer so far away.

Cruise's height comes in at around 5'7", which is slightly under the height of the average American male. The average is 5'9", which Cruise was listed as when starting out his career in the 1980s. The discrepancy isn't an odd one - it's a common practice to list actors as taller than they are, especially when first starting out. In the Jack Reacher book series, however, Reacher is described as being a towering 6'5", a whole 10 inches taller than Cruise's actual height.

Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher Casting Was Divisive Because Of His Height

At the time of casting, many were concerned about Cruise's ability to play the large, musclebound protagonist of Jack Reacher . Despite Cruise previously having starred in numerous action films, prior leading man experience was not enough for some, who felt that there was a height requirement to play the role. At the very least, the argument was that the physicality of the actor should match that of the character.

Did Tom Cruise Being Too Short For Jack Reacher Really Matter?

Despite being unable to grow to the correct height of the character, Tom Cruise was able to fit the bill of Reacher in several other ways. Like several of his other roles, Cruise did his own stunts on set, including the film's famous car chase sequence. Critics were content with the first Jack Reacher film, scoring an approval rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, and initially, it was announced there was no plan for a sequel. There are no further plans for more films starring Cruise, and with the Amazon Reacher series currently ongoing, more Cruise movies aren't necessary.

Surprisingly, the Jack Reacher movies may have been different. Dwayne Johnson auditioned for the role of Jack Reacher before the role went to Cruise, and that would have been a very different film. Choosing between two strong action leads must have been a difficult decision for production, but Cruise's performance was applauded by many at release. Regardless of the height of the character, Cruise personified the lone wolf agent in Jack Reacher as blunt and with a strong sense of justice – a perfect characterization.

The Mission: Impossible actor, 61, made one of his first public outings with daughter Isabella "Bella", 31, and son Connor, 29, in almost 15 years in a picture posted to former NFL player Derrick Brooks' Instagram on December 27.

In the photo, Cruise has his hand in his pocket and stands in the front next to Brooks, who is in between the star and his son Connor. Towards the back of the group photo, Bella peeks their head over the shoulder of another woman, smiling as she looks into the camera.
