Tom Holland: All New Movies and TV Shows Coming Out in 2024 and 2025

of Tom Holland: All New Movies and TV Shows Coming Out in 2024 and 2025

Tom Holland is undeniably a rising star in the entertainment industry, and his accolades are a testament to his exceptional talent and versatility. His ability to effortlessly transition between genres, from action-packed superhero films to emotionally charged dramas, is a testament to his prowess as a performer. What sets him apart is not only his acting skills but also his innate charisma and charm, which shine through in every role he undertakes. The actor’s journey in the world of cinema began with the film ‘The Impossible’ (2012), marking his initial foray onto the big screen. However, it was his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016) that catapulted him to widespread acclaim.

Continuing his portrayal of the iconic superhero, Holland appeared in subsequent MCU films such as ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017), ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). He also ventured into other projects like ‘Chaos Walking’ (2021) and ‘Uncharted’ (2022), showcasing his versatility as an actor. His most recent appearance was in the TV mini-series ‘The Crowded Room’ (2023), demonstrating his commitment to both film and television. If you are curious about Tom Holland’s upcoming projects and what the future holds for this talented actor, here’s a curated list of his forthcoming endeavors.

1. Untitled Spider-Man Sequel (TBA)

Tom Holland is gearing up to reprise his role as the beloved Peter Parker, swinging his way through the bustling streets of New York City. While the official synopsis for the upcoming Spider-Man film has not been unveiled yet, it’s expected to pick up from the dramatic events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ where the world learned of Peter Parker’s true identity. In a December 2021 interview, producer Amy Pascal hinted that Peter Parker’s sacrificial decision in the previous film would provide rich material for the next installment. With the confirmation of a fourth Spider-Man movie in the works, Holland also acknowledged his involvement in the project during an interview with Variety on June 1, 2023.

Noting that the project was still in its early stages, the multifaceted actor stated , “I can’t talk about that, but I can say that we have been having meetings. There’s been multiple conversations had, but at this point, it’s very, very early stages.” However, the development of the film hit a roadblock due to the writer’s strike, leading to a temporary halt in the project out of solidarity with the striking writers. As a result, details such as the trailer and release date are yet to be announced. As of now, it is in its pre-production stage.

2. Untitled Fred Astaire Biopic (TBA)

The untitled biopic of the legendary actor, dancer, and entertainer Fred Astaire is set to delve into his intriguing relationship with his sister, Adele Astaire. This highly anticipated film will offer a captivating glimpse into the life of a multifaceted talent who graced both Broadway and the West End, starring in over ten musicals, mesmerizing audiences in 31 musical films, showcasing his skills in four television specials, and leaving behind an enduring legacy of recordings.

Helming this exciting project is director Paul King, renowned for his delightful work on the ‘Paddington’ movies. Tom Holland, in a 2021 interview with Associate Press, confirmed his involvement in the challenging role, signaling his commitment to bringing this iconic figure to life on the big screen. Produced by Sony, the biopic is still in its nascent stages, with no additional details released.

3. Beneath a Scarlet Sky (TBA)

Based on the novel by Mark Sullivan, this World War II drama tells the true story of an Italian man named Pino Lella, aged 17, played by Holland, who helped Jews escape to Switzerland (the Alps) via an underground railroad after his house in Milan got destroyed by bombs of the Allied forces. Rachel O’Connor and Amy Pascal are producing it. This is all that is known of this project which is being treated as of now. More details are awaited.

Tom Holland Movies Ranked by Tomatometer

Young Tom Holland has only been in the public sphere for less than a decade, but it’s been a momentous one. He was recognized an immediate potential star with his debut The Impossible , the dramatization of a family swept away by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. In 2015, he was announced as the new Peter Parker, with Spider-Man swinging over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his debut in Captain America: Civil War , with Peter’s wide-eyed sincerity a standout character trait against the superhero mayhem. Holland carried through with two of his own Spider-Man movies and emotional appearances in Infinity War and Endgame .

Playing Spidey must take up significant on-camera time, as a lot of Holland’s recent non-Marvel work has been voices in films like  Spies in Disguise ,  Dolittle , and Onward . Beyond that, he also kept busy right on through the pandemic, releasing three films — The Devil All the Time ,  Chaos Walking , and  Cherry , the latter of which re-teamed him with  Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo.  Spider-Man: No Way Home brought renewed financial hope to theaters, and Holland followed up by launching the Uncharted franchise. All 6 Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Movies & Appearances in Order

Avatar photo

Spider-Man is one of the most popular superheroes ever created , and just like others, this character had several adaptations for the big screen. It started with the original ‘Spider-Man’ movie directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire in 2002. After the critical and commercial disappointment of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ Sony and Disney made a deal to bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Thomas Stanley “Tom” Holland was honored to play the newest live-action web crawler.

Since Tom Holland debuted as Spider-Man in the MCU in 2016, some fans immediately named him the best Spider-Man actor, although the debate about the best Spider-Man actor is still ongoing among the fans. However, whichever Spider-Man actor you consider the best one, there’s no doubt that Holland left a deep mark in the history of comic book adaptations. He was the first Spider-Man that was part of the bigger universe and, therefore, the only Spider-Man that got to hang out with the Avengers. He was also the only live-action Spider-Man whose origin story wasn’t repeated when he was first introduced on the big screen. So, in this article, we’ll take a look at all the movies in which Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has appeared so far.

Editor’s Note: This post is regularly updated to bring you the most recent news regarding the franchise.

How many movies featuring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man are there?

So far, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has appeared in six movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He debuted in 2016 in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ before he reprised the role in his solo movie a year later. After that, he appeared in two sequels to his solo movie and two ‘Avengers’ movies that were the crossover events and the climax of Infinity Saga.

20 Strongest Versions of Spider-Man (Ranked)

Movies featuring tom holland’s spider-man in order (at a glance).

When he was cast as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland signed a contract that bound him to do six MCU movies. Besides his own ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, Holland was introduced as the guest character in the third Captain America movie and appeared in two Avengers movies. Here’s the exact order of the MCU movies featuring Spider-Man that follow the entire character development of Tom Holland’s web-slinger.

  • ‘ Captain America: Civil War’ (2016)
  • ‘ Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)
  • ‘ Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018)
  • ‘ Avengers: Endgame’ (2019)
  • ‘ Spider-Man: Far From Home’ (2019)
  • ‘ Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021)

Spider-Man’s character arc is well-written throughout these six movies, and his next MCU appearance could show us the true Spider-Man that he was always meant to be. The ending of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ only teased that the ending of this story is just the beginning of another one.

Are movies featuring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man connected? Do you need to watch them in a specific order?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for being closely connected, even though some movies and TV shows can be watched separately. However, the story of Spider-Man is written throughout the six movies mentioned in the previous paragraph. So, yes! The MCU movies that feature Tom Holland’s Spider-Man are connected, and the best way is to watch them by release date.

True, you can watch Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy separately. Still, the number of references, mentions, and guest appearances is too big, so watching that trilogy without any MCU knowledge isn’t recommended at all. Also, while Spider-Man’s story in the MCU starts with Captain America: Civil War , you’d need knowledge of some previous MCU movies like Age of Ultron to fully understand the movie’s context. The same thing can be said for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, for which you’d need the knowledge of the first Avengers movie and Guardians of the Galaxy , Ant-Man , Doctor Strange , etc. In short, it’s probably for the best to watch almost the entire MCU.

How Old Is Peter Parker in the MCU? Every Movie & Appearance

What is the best way to watch movies featuring tom holland’s spider-man.

The MCU fans are still arguing whether it is best to watch the franchise chronologically by release date. And the truth is, it doesn’t matter because even if you watch the franchise by release date, you will be familiar with everything you need to know before each movie. For example, the Captain Marvel movie takes place in the 90s, but there’s no need to watch that movie among the first ones because there’s no need to know anything about that character before ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

If we only look at the MCU movies in which Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appears, the good news is that the order of those movies by release date and chronologically is the same. If you watch these six movies by release date, you are also watching them chronologically, so there’s no need to overthink the best way to watch them because there is only one way.

Movies featuring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in order

1. ‘captain america: civil war’ (2016).

tom holland time travel movie

The events of Captain America: Civil War are the follow-up to the events of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ The United Nations signed the Sokovia Accords, a document that would forbid the Avengers to act independently to save the day. While Tony Stark agrees with that, Steve Rogers disagrees, which breaks the Avengers into two teams and turns Captain America and his teammates into criminals and fugitives.

When the final showdown starts, Tony Stars recruits Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who was already bitten by the radioactive spider, to join his team. Stark also provided Peter with the new Spider-Man suit , and that was Spider-Man’s first chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

2. ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)

tom holland time travel movie

Following Captain America’s Civil War events, Peter Parker returns home. While Tony Stark is telling him to keep a low profile and help ordinary citizens, Peter believes he’s ready for another real mission with the Avengers. Spider-Man will soon encounter a new villain called the Vulture , who steals the alien technology to create powerful weapons for the black market.

After hacking the suit and going after Vulture behind his back, Tony Stark takes back the suit from Peter. However, after discovering that the Vulture is the father of his school classmate and love interest, Liz, Peter takes his handmade suit and stops the Vulture from hijacking Tony Stark’s plane that was transporting the high-tech stuff from the Avengers tower to the new Avengers facility. Tony then offers Peter a place on the team, but Peter declines, realizing what Tony was trying to teach him all along.

3. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018)

tom holland time travel movie

Peter continued to balance the life of a high-schooler and a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man until Thanos’ children, aka Black Order, attacked New York in search of Infinity Stones . Spider-Man joined Iron Man in a fight against Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian to protect Doctor Strange’s Time Stone , eventually bringing all three heroes to Maw’s Q-Ship. After defeating Maw, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Strange meet the Guardians of the Galaxy on Titan, where they wait for Thanos’ next move.

Is Peter Parker Jewish in the Comics? His Religion Explained

After Doctor Strange gave up the Time Stone in exchange for Iron Man’s life, Thanos teleported himself to Wakanda, where he took the Mind Stone, completing his collection and shaping his fingers to wipe out half of the universe’s population , including Peter Parker.

4. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019)

tom holland time travel movie

Spider-Man didn’t have a large role in Infinity War’s direct sequel since he appeared only for the third act when everyone that Thanos dusted off in ‘Infinity War’ returned. Of course, he still had two great scenes; one in which Iron Man hugged him after seeing him alive, and the second one when he said farewell to Iron Man after his ultimate sacrifice. And we still remember how the theater loudly cheered when Spider-Man appeared during the Portals scene.

5. ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ (2019)

tom holland time travel movie

After the death of Iron Man, Peter Parker returned to school, and the next chapter for him was to go on a school trip to Europe. Of course, when you’re Spider-Man, you don’t need to find trouble; the trouble usually finds you.

The trouble we’re talking about in this movie is a new villain called Mysterio, who basically wanted to pretend to be a hero like the Syndrome from The Incredibles. Although there was no Iron Man here, this movie also had a special guest star in the form of Samuel L. Jackson, an MCU veteran who still plays Nick Fury ( or a Skrull Talos while he’s playing Nick Fury , who can tell?).

6. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021)

tom holland time travel movie

Following the cliffhanger in ‘Far From Home,’ in which Mysterio exposes Spider-Man’s identity to the world, Peter starts to look for a way to make things right again. After asking for Doctor Strange’s help, a door to the Multiverse will open, and it will bring some known characters, which makes this movie a fan-service festival for every Spider-Man fan.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will team up with two more Spider-Men that we watched on the big screen long before the web-slinger joined the MCU to defeat Green Goblin and several other very known villains played by known actors.

Top 10 Spider-Man Characters Since His Debut

Where to watch movies featuring tom holland’s spider-man.

The MCU movies featuring Spider-Man that were made solely by Disney’s Marvel Studios (‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’) are available to stream on Disney+.

However, Spider-Man solo movies were made in co-production between Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, and Sony Pictures distributed them. Sony doesn’t have its own streaming service, so it’s hard to find those movies on streaming services. They can be streamed on STARZ or rented on Amazon Video, Apple TV, or similar services.

Will there be more movies featuring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?

There will be more Holland’s Spider-Man movies. Tom Holland’s initial six-movie contract expired with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, shortly after the release of ‘No Way Home,’ Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios revealed that they’re working on another sequel (of course they are, No Way Home has grossed $1.9 billion worldwide). Some reports say that Tom Holland negotiated another contract that should bind him to one Spider-Man trilogy and occasional appearances in MCU movies. However, we’re still waiting for the official word on that one.

We know that the untitled Spider-Man 4 , starring Tom Holland, is still in early development, with no release date set. Of course, it is also expected that Spider-Man will be part of the upcoming crossover movies ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ in 2025 and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2026.

Tom Holland's first-ever movie leaves Netflix soon

There's nothing quite like seeing one of the world's most recognisable movie stars as a kid to make you feel old.

That's just the privilege waiting for you if you catch The Impossible on Netflix before it leaves the streaming service on 1 June – which doesn't leave you much time at all.

It's a movie adaptation of the true story of a British family trying to survive the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean, which caused absolute devastation on the nearby coastline of Thailand, Indonesia and more.

Tom Holland plays the family's oldest child, Lucas, who becomes stranded with his mother (Naomi Watts), while his father (Ewan McGregor) does his best to keep the other two children safe – and it's a fairly harrowing watch at times.

The movie was particularly singled out for praise upon release for the long, stressful sequence that portrays the tsunami itself, which comes out of nearly nowhere and lasts for a good chunk of its runtime to really give you a sense of how difficult it would have been to survive.

That praise has translated through to a really respectable Rotten Tomatoes score of 82% from critics – and audiences seem to agree, rating it at a slightly boosted 84%. That all adds up to a pretty guaranteed memorable watch.

Director J.A. Bayona also went on to do interesting things, with both of his follow-up movies A Monster Calls and Society of the Snow getting really interesting reviews from critics upon release.

We can't necessarily say that The Impossible will be a fun watch, per se, because it's a pretty intense movie that really doesn't shy away from how devastating the natural disaster was, but it's well worth checking it out while Netflix can still offer it up.

It also means that, even if Disney+ is still the best streaming service for fans of Tom Holland's Spider-Man, you can look to Netflix for at least this part of his back catalogue.

Still, don't forget that it's only available until 1 June, so you don't have long at all left to watch it.

‘Back to the Future 4 trailer starring Tom Holland’ has ‘people in tears’

‘Back to the Future 4 trailer starring Tom Holland’ has ‘people in tears’

Fans were elated by the prospect of one more spin in the delorean time machine - especially if tom holland is now supposedly involved.

Olivia Burke

Olivia Burke

It's been 34 years since the third and final part of the Back to the Future franchise was released, but film fans are still desperate for another dose of the eccentric Doc and his gilet-wearing sidekick Marty McFly.

The trilogy holds a special place in the hearts of millions of movie lovers, as do the cast , so it's no wonder that a trailer for a fourth instalment starring Tom Holland left people 'in tears'.

The fact that it begins with the beloved Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) saying, 'It isn't over Marty...there's one more adventure waiting for us,' only tugged at viewers heart strings even more.

Because let's have it right, we all wouldn't mind one more spin in the DeLorean time machine - especially if Tom Holland is now supposedly involved.

The thrilling trailer for ' Back to the Future 4 ' shows the acclaimed actor starring as a 'brilliant young inventor' by the name of Jake McFly - who is obviously a descendant of the time travelling teen Marty ( Michael J. Fox ) and also enjoys sporting a red gilet .

The Doc reckons him and Marty have another adventure on the cards.

He stumbles across Doc's long-lost journal, which 'contains secrets to enhance time travel capabilities, opening up new possibilities and unforeseen consequences'. Chills, guys, literal chills.

Jake then starts hopping between multiple different timelines and faces off against 'a mysterious adversary' who wants to rewrite history.

Take a look for yourself here:

With flying cars, futurism and a 'fresh twist' on Back to the Future , people were literally blown away by the trailer.

But, as incredible - and incredibly convincing - as it may be, the trailer is sadly a fake made by dedicated movie buff and YouTuber KH Studio .

The tech whizz regularly creates concept mashup trailers by using 'a variety of effect techniques, sound design, AI technologies, film analytics, and other elements' to imagine what another addition to the legendary franchise would look like if it was released nowadays.

The fact they touted Tom Holland as the new time travelling youngster enthralled Back to the Future fans even more, as people reckon the Spider-Man star would be the perfect fit for a role as a McFly.

Despite being left gutted that it wasn't a real film trailer, viewers of the clever YouTube video were super impressed with KH Studio's abilities - and their creativity with the made up storyline.

Tom Holland was touted as a McFly in the fan-made trailer.

One commented: "This is incredibly impressive stuff. I know what a fan-made title looks like so I knew it was going in… but then totally doubted myself while watching it and honestly wondered if it was real."

Another added: "That was awesome. I hate fan-made trailers but they could totally pull this off. Good job. I agree, very well done and it almost had me in tears."

A third wrote: "Dude.. The amount of spine tingles I got while watching this was insane! Amazing work!! This needs to be made for real ASAP!"

A fourth chimed in: "This is dang good, man. I'm super impressed, it almost fooled me for a real trailer for a real movie. Well done!! I'd watch this movie in a HEARTBEAT."

And a fifth said: "Imagine what fantastic stories there could be. Thanks for this good work. Think we'll never get Part 4."

4 Uncharted (2022)

Nathan Drake is recruited by treasure hunter Victor Sullivan to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago. Starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg and Antonio Banderas.

Read Our Review

In 2022, Sony gave us Uncharted , an action-adventure film, based on the video game series of the same name, that follows Victor Sullivan, a treasure hunter played by Mark Wahlberg. When he teams up with Nathan Drake (Holland), a man who knows the ins and outs of the streets, the two begin a journey to uncover a substantial fortune supposedly hidden by famed explorer, Ferdinand Magellan.

Nate and Sully are now in a race against the clock and other greedy hands to get to his prize and come out victorious. Also included in this cast are Antonio Banderas as Santiago, Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, and Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer.

What Makes It Great

Especially after his years of acting in the MCU, Holland has built a reputation for being an actor who is hands-on with his stunts. Uncharted is one of his purely-action films that showcases his ability to act in spaces outside the MCU. What's more, the film offers a different side we haven't really seen before: where Peter Parker is sweet and a bit of a softie, Nathan Drake is cocky and cool. This thrilling action-adventure is the kind of film that appears to be right up Holland's alley.

3 The Impossible (2012)

The impossible.

Time for one of the best throwbacks in Holland's acting career . The Impossible is a film that follows a family navigating the aftermath of a devastating tsunami that hit the resort they were vacationing in, in Thailand. Based on the thrilling and heart-wrenching true story of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, The Impossible has Naomi Watts playing the mother and wife, Maria, Ewan McGregor as her husband, Henry, Tom Holland as their oldest son, Lucas, and Samuel Joslin and Oaklee Pendergast as the youngest sons, Thomas and Simon. When the family gets separated from each other, all they have is fate to rely on to (hopefully) reunite in the wake of disaster.

The Impossible is one of those movies that will have you simultaneously at the edge of your seat and reaching for your tissues. This film is a stunning tale of resilience, bravery, and the power of family that is easily one of Holland's best projects to date. He and Watts are electric as mother and son and, at just 14 years old, Holland's performance demonstrated an emotional depth beyond his years. If you are looking for an emotional rollercoaster, The Impossible will blow you away.

2 The Devil All the Time (2020)

The devil all the time.

2020's The Devil All the Time will remain one of the heaviest and darkest films you could watch on Netflix. This film follows a young man who is hellbent on exposing hidden and sinister secrets that have infiltrated the peace of a small community. Starring Holland, Harry Melling, Bill Skarsgård, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, Riley Keough, and Mia Wasikowska, The Devil All the Time is by no means an easy-going watch, and yet, it remains a must-watch in Holland's filmography.

The Devil All the Time is no Spider-Man . However, Holland shines in this film, which is more a testament to his longevity as an actor. Indeed, it was the first time post-MCU debut that audiences got to see Holland prove himself a capable dramatic actor. This film is heavy, after all; the dark subject matter of this movie required demanding and excruciating performances from this cast of actors. Audiences were left disturbed and unnerved. For Holland's movies on Netflix, this one is not one to miss.

1 A Monster Calls (2016)

A monster calls.

Holland's role in A Monster Calls is not the kind you'd expect. The 2016 film follows a young boy named Conor (Lewis MacDougall), who is left to navigate a life with an ill mother, an absent father, and a grandmother he cannot connect with. However, he does find a friendship with The Monster (Liam Neeson), who visits him one night outside his window. Conor then embarks on a wild adventure, where he discovers the truth surrounding the infinite possibilities of childhood imagination.

According to Entertainment Weekly , Holland performed as a stand-in for the monster. This would have been in the early days of career, prior to his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War . So, although this role is not one where we can really take note of his performance, it still counts, as his physicality would be a defining aspect of his talent. This film is full of fantasy and magic, showcasing a childish wonder that exists in the darker parts of our reality.

Back To The Future And 9 More ‘80s Roles Tom Holland Would Have Been Perfect For If Time Travel Worked

Tom Holland as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Tom Holland is such a class act. The actor really swung on to the scene as the MCU’s Peter Parker back in Captain America: Civil War and has since dazzled in four other Marvel movie appearances, as well as lent his voice to this year’s Dolittle and Onward . Holland has a lot more exciting projects ahead of him , but let’s go back in time for a moment. What if he was an actor of the ‘80s? That viral Back To The Future deepfake with Holland and Robert Downey Jr. got us thinking, if we could place the actor in more iconic films of the era, he’d fit right into these roles:

Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in Back To the Future

Marty McFly, Back To The Future

Tom Holland’s alignment with Marty McFly actually makes a ton of sense because the actor based some of his Spider-Man performance on the Michael J. Fox character for Spider-Man: Homecoming . If you watch closely, you’ll pick out some tributes to Back To the Future in his role as Peter Parker. Even Homecoming itself is influenced by the ‘80s high school movie. We know Holland would pull off an incredible Marty McFly, because the aforementioned deepfake is perfect:

It’s uncanny, isn’t it? Tom Holland even expressed interest in recreating the scene with Robert Downey Jr . We know the actor just oozes Marty McFly energy. If we could get a hold of a DeLorean and plop him into more ‘80s roles…

Anthony Michael Hall in The Breakfast Club

Brian Johnson, The Breakfast Club

The seminal ‘80s high school film is undoubtedly John Hughes ’ The Breakfast Club . The movie about a group of kids from different sides of the high school cafeteria placed in one room for detention one afternoon helped propel Anthony Michael Hall into stardom shortly after he also starred alongside Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles . If Tom Holland was alive back in the day or a sneaky time traveler, Hall’s character of Brian Johnson as the “brain” would be a great fit and dramatic challenge for him.

Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Isn’t Tom Holland a total Matthew Broderick ? Another John Hughes classic the actor could wear the sunglasses for is 1986’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off . Holland is great at playing the goody good, but it would be fun to see him play this wise guy for a fun-filled day of hooky? Plus, we’d like to see the actor show off his comedic chops front and center in his own flick. Bueller… Bueller… Bueller?

Christian Slater in Heathers

J.D., Heathers

Could Tom Holland have starred in his very own cult classic? 1989’s Heathers wasn’t a hit when it was first released to theaters, but it slowly hit people’s radars and has become an under-the-radar ‘80s hit. Christian Slater ’s J.D. is the devilishly handsome pair to Winona Ryder ’s Veronica as the black comedy comments on the place of popularity in high schools with murder and mystery. Now Brad Pitt was reportedly up for J.D. , but passed on for looking “too sweet.” The same could be said about Holland’s persona, but I think he could take a bloody stab at it.

Daniel LaRusso, The Karate Kid

Sure, Tom Holland is starting to leave “kid” territory. Even so, the actor could have really embodied Daniel LaRusso in the epic 1984 hit. Holland has a talent of hitting the right emotional beats with apt timing, and we know he can rise to the challenge of testing his physicality. The Karate Kid needs both those things in the story about Daniel’s standing up to his bullies with some help from Mr. Miyagi.

Kevin Bacon in Footloose

Ren McCormack, Footloose

Did you know Tom Holland used to be a trained dancer and gymnast? The actor got his start in Billy Elliot the Musical when he was a kid. Now Holland has admitted to having dropped the craft in his later life, but he really wants to get back into it. What better way than through taking on the role of Ren McCormack in Footloose ? Should Holland take on a song-and-dance role, Kevin Bacon ’s defining role is a great fit for the actor. Plus, it’d be one more connection between him and his Onward co-star Chris Pratt, since the actor’s iconic Guardians of the Galaxy character, Peter Quill, is obsessed with this movie.

Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society

Todd Anderson, Dead Poets Society

Wow, do we miss Robin Williams . If given the chance, I think a lot of young actors like Tom Holland would take any opportunity to work with the funny man. He was such a staple to family cinema of the ‘90s when Holland was growing up. A role with Williams that Holland could fit right into is Todd Anderson in Dead Poets Society . The heartfelt movie from 1989 is about an English teacher at a conservative boarding school who inspires his male students through poetry. Holland would be perfect as Ethan Hawke’s new kid, Todd.

Patrick Dempsey in Can't Buy Me Love

Ronald Miller, Can’t Buy Me Love

How crazy is it that Tom Holland has yet to do a romantic comedy? If we were to pick one from the ‘80s for him, we’d place him in 1987’s Can’t Buy Me Love , which starred Grey’s Anatomy ’s Patrick Dempsey before the ABC hospital drama was even a sparkle in the network’s eye. Dempsey played a high school nerd who gives a cheerleader (Amanda Peterson) $1000 to be his girlfriend for a month. It’s an adorable movie with a ton of charm and comedy that Holland could pull off with ease.

Zach Galligan as Billy Peltzer in Gremlins

Billy Peltzer, Gremlins

Imagine it: Tom Holland as Billy Peltzer in Joe Dante's Gremlins . It's perfect, right? The Spider-Man actor could definitely embody the teenager who receives Gizmo the Gremlin as he spawns more creatures like him and chaos ensues. The classic horror comedy from 1984 calls for the kind of sweetness Holland has portrayed in his roles out of Billy. The character isn’t unlike his Onward role of Ian Lightfoot.

What do you think? Which of these ‘80s classics would you like to see Tom Holland star in an alternate timeline where he time travels to the era? Discuss your picks in the comments and vote in the poll below.

Everything You Need to Know About Loki and Time Travel in the MCU

L oki has already had a full arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The fan-favorite character, played by Tom Hiddleston , began as a villain in Thor and the first Avengers movie in 2011 and 2012 and morphed into something of an anti-hero, or at least a lovable cad, by the time Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War were released in 2017 and 2018. Now, Marvel is turning back the clock and undoing Loki’s maturation. The new Disney+ series Loki , debuting June 9, will be a soft reboot for the character.

The trailers for the show reveal little except that a 2012 version of the Marvel antihero is recruited by a group of time cops to restore order to the universe. But this “Loki variant,” as he is called, has not learned to love his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth) or the importance of being a hero. He’ll likely have to learn those lessons all over again as he hops through time and—as some fans predict—meets different versions of himself in different universes.

If Loki’s time-traveling antics already have you confused, here’s everything you need to know about what happened to Loki before the show, how time travel works in the MCU and how Loki will tie into future Marvel movies.

What’s Loki’s backstory?

Loki

Loki is a trickster who switches allegiances from movie to movie. Like his brother Thor, he is a god, though he finds out in the Thor movies that he is not the genetic son of Oden, the King of Asgard, as Thor is. He is descended from the Frost Giants and was adopted by Oden.

Thor and Loki have a rather complicated relationship. Loki has tried to usurp Thor and Oden’s power several times and take the throne of Asgard for himself. He even allied himself with Thanos in Avengers and used two of the Infinity Stones to try to enslave all of Earth before the Avengers defeated him.

But Loki has also sacrificed himself several times for his brother. In fact, he “dies” twice in the Thor movies, though it turns out he faked both deaths (through magic, I guess) and always returns to the delight of his fans. By the end of the third Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok, Loki seems to have changed his ways. He helps Thor save the people of Asgard from their evil sister Hela and plans to help Thor start a new colony for their people.

Unfortunately, just as the Asgardians are making their escape from their burning planet, they are intercepted by Thanos, on the hunt for Infinity Stones. Loki, despite having become an avowed good guy, couldn’t help but steal one of the Infinity Stones from the treasure room at Asgard before they abandoned the planet, thus attracting Thanos to the ship of refugees.

Loki feigns loyalty to Thanos but secretly plots to kill him. But Thanos catches Loki and chokes him to death in front of Thor, quipping, “No resurrections this time” as he kills him.

Wait, so Loki is dead?

null

Yes, “Loki Prime,” as we’ll refer to him—the Loki who made amends with his brother Thor and helped save the people of Asgard and tried to kill Thanos to save the universe—is dead. But when the Avengers travel back in time in Avengers: Endgame , they encounter another version of Loki, the 2012 version of Loki obsessed with ruling earth. That version of Loki is the one we’ll see in his eponymous TV series.

It’s also worth noting that these are superhero films. Nobody is ever dead dead if Marvel wants to bring them back. Gamora died in Infinity War but a time-traveling version of her returned for Endgame . We were told that Hank Pym’s wife, Janet, was dead, but it turned out she was only lost in the Quantum Realm. Idris Elba’s Heimdall was killed by Thanos in Infinity War but has been spotted on the set of the next Thor movie, Thor: Love and Thunder .

Did you really think that Marvel was going to dump its most beloved villain?

O.K., so when did we last see Loki?

The Avengers - 2012

In order to defeat Thanos in Endgame , the Avengers decide they must travel back in time and retrieve the Infinity Stones. One group of Avengers travels to New York in 2012 when Loki was attempting to use both the Mind Stone and the Space Stone (a.k.a. the Tesseract ) to attack the city and enslave all Earthlings. The Avengers are able to retrieve both stones from the 2012 version of Loki but during a surprise scuffle, the 2012 version of Loki is able to grab the Tesseract and disappear.

The TV show Loki begins with that version of Loki being apprehended by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization tasked with preventing disruptions in the time-space continuum. They tell Loki that he “broke reality” when he grabbed the Tesseract and must help them restore the balance of the universe.

This version of Loki isn’t as mature or evolved as the version that was killed, and that will no doubt play a major role in how the character decides to conduct himself on the show.

How does time travel work in the MCU?

Tony Stark aka Iron Man in Avengers Endgame

Let’s start by explaining how time travel does not work in the Marvel movies. (I promise, it’s simplest that way.)

Movies tend to feature two types of time travel. I’ll call them the butterfly effect and the loop. Back to the Future employs the butterfly effect. Everything that Marty McFly does in the past affects his future. So when he accidentally prevents his parents from falling in love, he jeopardizes his own existence in the future.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban employs the loop. Harry and Hermione necessarily have to travel back in time to save Sirius Black because they always had traveled back in time to save Sirius Black. There was always only one version of the story and the outcome was going to be the same. Think about when Harry travels back in time and produces the patronus. He knows that he has to produce it because somebody (he) had already produced it.

Marvel’s time travel doesn’t work like either the butterfly effect or the loop. When the Avengers travel back in time in Avengers: Endgame to retrieve the Infinity Stones and defeat Thanos, they create branching timelines. So nothing they do in the past affects their present. It only impacts a different timeline.

In Endgame , the Ancient One explains to Hulk that someone will need to travel back in time and put all the Infinity Stones they stole back in their places to ensure that time remains stable. Captain America does this for all the Infinity Stones. But there’s one problem: When the Avengers traveled back to the Battle of New York in 2012, Loki was able to escape with one of the Infinity Stones, the Tesseract. Captain America and Iron Man traveled further back in time to retrieve that same stone in the 1970s. But Loki still created a new branching timeline when he grabbed the 2012 Tesseract and draws the attention of the TVA.

So in theory when a character creates a branching timeline, the “variant” of that character can go off and do their own thing until the TVA captures them. That means multiple versions of a character can exist in different branching timelines and even meet and interact with one another.

Who else is in Loki ?

tom holland time travel movie

Owen Wilson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw seem to play members of the TVA. Richard E. Grant is also in the show, though his character has not been revealed.

Some fans have speculated based on the comics that Loki will interact with other versions of himself in various timelines, and Grant could be an older version of Loki. There’s also rumored to be a younger Loki and female Loki.

How will Loki tie into the MCU?

tom holland time travel movie

Loki’ s showrunner Michael Waldron has also been tapped to write Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , suggesting that there may be some tonal similarities and even plot connections between the two projects. (Waldron wrote on Community , which the Russo brothers also worked on, as well as Rick and Morty , so expect Loki to be rather irreverent.)

We know that the next Doctor Strange movie will star the sorcerer Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff, who discovered that she is a witch at the end of WandaVision. We also know that, like Spider-Man: No Way Home , the next Doctor Strange film will involve some multiverse shenanigans. Considering that Loki will involve lots of time travel, it’s probable that we’ll get a glimpse of the multiverse in this show.

Marvel has teased that another movie will deal with the multiverse, this year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home . As Spidey fans know, three different actors have played Peter Parker in three different live-action Spider-Man franchises: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and, now, Tom Holland.

Marvel Studios has revealed that villains from past versions of the Spider-Man movies, like Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus from the Tobey Maguire movies and Jamie Foxx’s Electro from the Andrew Garfield movies, have been cast in the upcoming Tom Holland starrer, No Way Home . Some fans have even speculated that Maguire and Garfield will show up in the movie as the various Spider-Men are transported across parallel universes. If Loki introduces the concept of one Loki variant interacting with another, the idea of one Peter Parker meeting another Peter Parker played by a different actor isn’t so farfetched.

It remains unclear whether this version (or any version!) of Loki will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder , which is due to be released in 2022. We do know that Matt Damon, who played Loki in a staged version of the Thor saga within Thor: Ragnarok , will appear in Love and Thunder , suggesting that we’ll at least get allusions to the trickster in the forthcoming Thor film.

Marvel's Loki: 5 Time Travel Movies You Should Watch Before Tom Hiddleston's Disney+ Show

Loki Interstellar Harry Potter

"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads."

Avengers: Endgame introduced the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the concept of time travel. With the inclusion of the Time Variance Authority in the Tom Hiddleston-starring  Loki  series, set to begin on June 9 on Disney+, time travel will continue to be a factor in the future of this cinematic universe.

As any time traveling movie does, Endgame set up its own set of rules and consequences for visiting a different time. Dr. Bruce Banner explains the MCU time travel rules as the following, “If you travel back into your own past, that destination becomes your future, and your former present becomes the past, which can’t now be changed by your new future.”

This convoluted way of explaining it basically means, unlike Back to the Future , changing the past will not directly change the future. This is why instead of going back in time to stop Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War , the Avengers used time travel in order to collect the Infinity Stones.

However, the Ancient One and Banner's conversation about removing an Infinity Stone from a timeline explained how branched reality could be made. The Ancient One explains what would happen if the Time Stone were removed from their reality and not returned, "In this new branched reality, without our chief weapon against the forces of darkness, our world will be overrun. Millions will suffer."

In the end, all the stones are presumably returned by Steve Rogers and no branched realities are formed... with one caveat. The 2012 version of Loki seen in  Endgame  escapes with the Tesseract, instead of being sent to an Asgardian prison. Thereby, forming a new reality where the events of Loki will surely take place.

This new form of time travel is unique, but there are many other films and television shows that have used their own time-traveling logic. Here are the five time travel films you should watch before Tom Hiddleston's  Loki.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Back to the Future

"So, Back to the Future' s a bunch of bullshit?"

Despite Endgame 's logic making Scott Lang see  Back to the Future  in a completely different light, it has a much simpler way of how time travel works. In the  Back to the Future trilogy the flow of time runs on one line and the events of the past directly affect the future. Marty McFly traveling back to 1955, years before he was born, immediately altered the future when he crashed into Old Man Peabody's barn.

The consequences of time travel become more obvious when Marty interferes with his mom and dad falling in love. This sets the course for the entire plot of the film in 1955 and how Marty needs to get back to the future, while also ensuring that he restores his parents' relationship. In the end, not only does Marty restore their romance, but because of the critical differences in how it happened his family is much more successful and happy in 1985 when he returns.

Back to the Future  is arguably the most iconic use of time travel in film history. A wild-eyed scientist creates a time machine and a teenager nearly erases himself from existence because his mom falls in love with him, instead of his dad.  The synopsis is so strange but stands the test of time as of the most impactful Sci-Fi movies for a generation.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

X-Men Days of Future Past

"In the future, you and I are gonna be good friends. You just don't know it yet."

In  Day of Future Past  time-traveling was introduced to the X-Men Fox universe. Kitty Pryde sends Wolverine's consciousness to the past to save their world in the future. Pryde tells Logan, "As long as you're back there, past and present will continue to coexist. But once you wake up, whatever you've done will take hold and become history. And for the rest of us, it'll be the only history that we know."

This succinct explanation from Pryde gives the audience all they need to know in order to understand how time travel works. It's a unique take on time travel compared to other movies because Wolverine was the only one out of time, and he didn't physically travel. Similar to  Future,  the events of the past directly affect the future, putting all the pressure on Logan to fix the future.

In one of the best X-Men films,  Days of Future Past  succeeds at telling a time-traveling story that melds the two eras of X-Men. Look out for Pryde to introduce yet another form of time travel in the MCU when mutants are ultimately introduced .

HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

"How did you get there? I was just talking to you over there! And now you're there!"

Prisoner of Azkaban  has one of the best uses of time travel because it acts as a twist and is on a logical loop. What is unique about  Azkaban  is that when Harry and Hermione use the Time-Turner to travel back in time, they realize that earlier in the day they were already there. This looped timeline serves as a logical form of time travel because if they did go back in time, then they would have always been there. It is hard to explain but makes perfect sense in action.

The time-traveling aspects of  Prisoner of Azkaban  make it one of the more unique Harry Potter  films. The closed-loop time travel used is incredibly satisfying, especially seeing Harry and Hermoine from the future affects the past. For example, when Hermoine throwing the rocks through Hagrid's window and when Harry evokes his Patronus and saves himself and Sirius Black.

J.K. Rowling wrote basically wrote out the Time-Turners after  Azkaban  because it opened up a lot of issues. Nevertheless, this use of time travel is one of the best in pop culture cinema and remains special because of its one-time use in this film.

INTERSTELLAR

Interstellar

"Love is the one thing that transcends time and space."

Interstellar  represents a more scientific form of time travel. What happens in  Interstellar  can be described as time dilation, when time moves faster or slower depending upon where you are. This relativity theory involves the elasticity of time, specifically, getting close to a black hole, where the gravitational field is huge, time dilation is also huge. In  Interstellar, when they travel to   Miller's planet near Gargantua, 1 hour on the planet corresponds to 7 years on Earth.

23 years have passed when Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and Brand (Anne Hathaway) return to the ship. It's a jarring moment when we get reintroduced to an older Romilly and Murph (via video message). The often meme'd scene of McConaughey crying at the screen occurs, but in the context of the movie is the devastating reality of time relativity and the risks.

This wouldn't often be described as a time travel movie, but it does give audiences a more realistic look at traveling through time at different rates. Give Nolan's latest  Tenet  a watch if you're searching for a more complex form of time travel.

DOCTOR STRANGE

Doctor Strange Sanctum Sanctorum

"Dormammu, I've come to bargain"

Ironically, a different form of time travel was already introduced in  Doctor Strange  with the Time Stone. The Time Stone can reverse time, as well as look into the future like Doctor Strange did in Avengers: Infinity War . The 2016 origin story gave a better look at the stone's abilities and how time travel was possible. Even Thanos reverses a moment in time in  Infinity War  to bring Vision and (more importantly) the Mind Stone.

In Doctor Strange , the soon-to-be Sorcerer Supreme used the Time Stone in two ways. Firstly, he rewound the destruction of Hong Kong and the unleashing of the Dark Dimension. Something unique about time travel through the Time Stone is that it can alter various sizes of items. For instance, Strange manipulated time through something as small as an apple, then reverses mass destruction and deaths. Strange was also able to remove himself, Wong, and Mordo from being manipulated.

The more iconic use of time travel in  Doctor Strange  is when Strange traps Dormammu in an endless loop of time. Strange flexed his M.D. and Ph. D. degrees by outsmarting the ruler of the Dark Dimension. This loop became a mini version of the loop seen in  Edge of Tomorrow  (or Live Die Repeat ) when you die you are able to restart your journey from the beginning. Strange's use of time-travel wasn't as commonly seen as from other films but gave fans their best look at the Time Stone in the MCU.

HOW LOKI'S TIME TRAVEL WILL COMPARE

Time Flow

The trailers leading up to  Loki 's premiere on Disney+ have made it clear that Tom Hiddleston's Loki has been incarcerated by the Time Variance Authority . The TVA act as the timekeepers of the MCU, and it seems like Owen Wilson's Mobius has a managing role within the organization . As previously mentioned, the 2012 version of Loki who escaped with the Tesseract in  Avengers: Endgame fundamentally changed the timeline he was in and has now been labeled a "variant."

The official trailer made it clear that the TVA wants Loki to help them fix the reality that he broke through his use of the Space Stone. It is unclear exactly if or how the TVA is able to travel time (in the comics, they can allow people to time travel), but it isn't crazy to think Loki could travel through time, or, at the very least, visit other realities.

Similar to  Back to The Future,  Loki messed with the flow of time unknowingly. Just as Marty McFly did, Loki will need to restore reality. However, The God of Mischief always has a trick or two up his sleeve and likely won't fully coordinate with the TVA unless his life becomes endangered.

Just as Hermoine realized they needed to go back in time to save Sirius and Buckbeak in  Prisoner of Azkaban,  Mobius needs to revert the damage Loki has done to save the flow of time.

In a similar way to how the flow of time was location-dependent in  Interstellar,  time may work differently in the TVA facilities, where they can seemingly pluck anyone out of any time period that is disturbing the flow of time. And just as The Sorcerer Supreme protected the Time Stone and used it when needed, the same could be said for how Mobius and the TVA use their potential time-travel abilities.

Tony Stark's quote,  “You mess with time, it tends to mess back” could be said for all of these films and will ring very true for  Loki.  The possibility of multiverse-jumping and time-traveling in the upcoming Disney+ series is sure to be a treat for fans that love the manipulation of time.

  • Trivia One of the most iconic monsters in Dungeons & Dragons is the gelatinous cube. Imagined by creator E. Gary Gygax himself in the very first edition of Dungeons & Dragons in 1974, the gelatinous cube is a staple foe that players encounter early on in their adventuring. (It has an entry-level challenge rating of "2" in the current version of D&D. That's low.) The cube moves slowly but can be very dangerous once it gets close, as it absorbs victims and slowly digests them while they float helplessly inside.
