Gran Teatre del Liceu

Updated Aug 26 2023

The Gran Teatre del Liceu (the Great Theatre of the Lyceum in English) is a unique theatre, and a true icon of music and art, both in Barcelona and at an international level. All of the most well known operas have been performed there, and the best-known opera singers from each era have sung there.

Information about the Gran Teatre del Liceu

Built in 1847, its first years in business weren’t easy, as it had to compete with the Teatre Principal , which was much older and already had a great reputation. Even so, as the Teatre del Liceu was more innovative and had a better economic power behind it, it ended up dominating the Teatre Principal .

Much has happened over its nearly 200 years of history , and it has been through all kinds of events, from great operatic premieres to tragic moments in history, such as the attack of 1893 carried out by members of an anarchist movement, and the two fires that the theatre suffered, the latter of which was in 1994.

After this fire the theatre became publicly owned for the first time, and after five years of restoration the theatre was re-opened in 1999. The external structure of the building is the same as the original, but its interior had to be completely refurbished, as the effects of the fire were so devastating.

What are the features of the theatre that really stand out?

The historic foyer Of sheer beauty, the historic foyer has a series of columns inspired by the Renaissance, and a marble floor with black and white diamonds that give a very elegant feel to the space.
The theatre itself With a capacity of 2,294 people, the current theatre is an exact replica of the original. Hanging from its roof is an enormous light, designed by the artist Perejaume .

Gran Teatre del Liceu

The Hall of Mirrors Officially known by its Catalan name of ‘Saló dels Miralls’, this is the hall where people go in the intervals of concerts. Its name comes from the huge amount of mirrors that adorn the room, along with many ceiling paintings and references to art.
El Foyer The area called ‘El Foyer’ isn’t actually the foyer of the theatre, but in fact a modern audiovisual space underneath the theatre itself. It has a magnificent acoustic, and is used for all sorts of conferences and audio-visual presentations.
El Cercle del Liceu The visit to the modernist facilities of this private members’ club within the LiceuThe visit to the modernist facilities of this private members’ club within the Liceu is one of the most pleasant surprises that a trip to the Liceu has to offer. is one of the most pleasant surprises that a trip to the Liceu has to offer.

How to visit the Lyceum Theatre?

The tours that the Gran Teatre del Liceu offers take place in the mornings, so that they don’t clash with rehearsals and concerts, which occupy the theatre in the afternoons and evenings.

If you can’t catch a night at the opera , you can still take in the awe-inspiring architectural riches of one of Europe’s greatest opera houses. Opened in 1847, the Liceu launched Catalan stars such as Josep (José) Carreras and Montserrat Caballé, and seats up to 2300 people in its grand auditorium. Standard 45-minute tours of classic spaces (the foyer, Saló dels Miralls and auditorium) run in Catalan, Spanish and English; check updated schedules online.

Fire virtually destroyed the Liceu in 1994, but technicians carefully reconstructed the 19th-century auditorium, with the latest in theatre technology and ceiling murals by Catalan artist Perejaume, by 1999.

The 45-minute tour leads through the grand foyer, with its thick pillars and sumptuous chandeliers, and up the marble staircase to the Saló dels Miralls (Hall of Mirrors). These both survived the fire. The latter was traditionally where theatre-goers mingled during intermission. With mirrors, ceiling frescoes, fluted columns and high-and-mighty phrases in praise of the arts, it exudes a typically neobaroque richness worthy of its 19th-century patrons. You are then taken up to the 4th-floor stalls to admire the restored theatre itself.

More in-depth tours include visits to the Cercle del Liceu (€16, one hour), a Modernista art collection with works by Ramon Casas, or through the inner workings of the stage and backstage work areas (€24, 80 minutes).

Gran Teatre del Liceu: Barcelona’s great opera house

Information

Constant adaptation to new times has meant that Barcelona’s Liceu has stayed at the forefront as a theatre in Mediterranean Europe. All that is left of the original building is the façade designed by Oriol Mestres from 1874, which was built on the site of a convent of the Trinitarian Order. After the fire that destroyed the hall and the stage in 1994, Barcelona didn’t resign itself to losing its temple of opera and began to reconstruct the original building with the addition of advanced infrastructures and expanding its capacity by annexing neighbouring lots on the Rambla , Carrer de la Unió and Carrer de Sant Pau. On 7 October 1999 its opera season opened once again with a performance of Turandot by Puccini under the direction of Núria Espert.

Guided tours of the Liceu de Barcelona

To enjoy the grandeur of the building you can take several types of tours that include different parts of the Liceu. All begin in the Renaissance-style lobby, one of the few spaces that survived the fire. Especially notable is the main marble staircase, which has a sculpture of the Muse of Music at the top of it.

The tour continues through the striking horseshoe-shaped Auditorium, a replica of the original with capacity for approximately 2,300, inspired by the Teatro alla Scala in Milan . Its five tiers and box seats around the stalls as well as the dress circle make it into a unique place for enjoying operas, concerts, recitals and dance. The curtain was designed by Antoni Miró in such a way that it can be opened both vertically and from side to side. On the ceiling you will see eight painted medallions, five of which conceal the spotlights that light up during performances. The orchestra pit platform can be elevated or kept below the stage according to the needs of the performance. All of these technical innovations were installed in the post-fire restoration.

From there comes the Mirrored Salon , where the Catalan upper middle classes used to gather. The room, which survived the fire, was once called El Vergel, or The Garden. These days, after its restoration, it boasts new ceiling paintings, and at the top of the walls appear texts on art and music.

The tour concludes in the Foyer , situated beneath the stalls, where an audience briefing takes place prior to each opera performance.

If you decide to take the Prestige Tour you’ll be able to see the Cercle del Liceu , an English-style private members club that houses a great modernist art collection. Meanwhile, the Liceu Secret Tour takes in the great stage, the orchestra pit, the dressing rooms and the rehearsal rooms. The stage is the focal point of an enormous structure that is 40 metres tall and has a depth of 24 metres below stage level. Its complex facilities allow for swift scene changes and assembly, thanks to two large platforms that form the mouth of the stage and function as lifts. This journey into the heart of the Liceu and the opera world concludes in the dressmaking department and character design room. To take this tour you must book in advanced and check the calendar, as they do not take place daily.

Escape Room: the ‘Enigma Puccini’

The opera Turandot by Puccini is a highly symbolic work for the Liceu, as it was the opening performance after the fire in 1999, and the work used, in 2019, to mark the twentieth anniversary of it reopening, under the musical direction of the maestro Josep Pons with a new production by the video-creator Franc Aleu. It’s no wonder then that, in efforts to introduce new generations to opera, the Liceu now offers an Escape Room themed around the work. Based on the idea that the composer Giacomo Puccini left the ending of Turandot in the hands of the Trinitarian Order for safekeeping, participants must solve different challenges to find the manuscript hidden within the Liceu. It is also a great way to explore the different rooms of the Barcelona opera theatre suitable for those over the age of eight.

New opera audiences

If you’re not content with just a tour and you would like to experience a night of opera , the Liceu endeavours to introduce new audiences to the genre. Those under the age of 35 have their very own session, #LiceuUnder35, held twice a year and including food stands and a DJ in the Foyer.

In order to introduce kids to opera it also offers Petit Liceu Familiar , which includes programmes aimed at children of three years of age to teenagers over the age of 12 with in-house productions and classic performances.

The Liceu de Barcelona is without a doubt a symbol of Catalan society that has retained its original grandeur and been able to rise from the ashes.

The opera house Gran Teatre del Liceu

Discover one of the largest opera houses worldwide - with fascinatingly beautiful architecture.

Historical facade of the Gran Teatre del Liceu from the Rambla

Historical facade of the Liceu from the Rambla

The Gran Teatre del Liceu is one of the most important opera houses in Europe. The largest Wagner Festival after the Bayreuth Festival takes place here regularly.

The most important works of classical music have been performed by the greatest singers of the past two decades. Stars like Domingo, Pavarotti, Caballé, Callas and Tebaldi were here and will always have a special place in the heart of the audience.

History of the Gran Teatre del Liceu

The beginnings of the opera in Barcelona go back to the Sociedad Dramática de Aficionados in 1837. This union of liberal, armed citizen militia founded a musical conservatory. Under the direction of Queen Isabel II in 1838 it became the "Liceo Filármonico Dramático Barcelonés".

The success of the building "Liceu Filármonico Dramátic" brought a group of leading citizens to plan a new opera house. They wanted to build a more splendid opera house than would have been possible under royal management. To finance this, they founded a company that accumulated profits from stock trading. The members of the "Societat de Propietaris", the owners' company, reserved most of the lodges.

On April 4, 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu was opened. It was built according to plans by architect Miquel Garriga i Roca. With 4,000 seats, it was the largest opera in Europe. From 1855 the Societat de Propietaris was solely responsible for the operation of the opera, since it had separated from the conservatory. In 1861, the Liceu was hit by a fire for the first time. The auditorium and the stage were completely destroyed. But only a year later, the opera house was reopened.

The Reconstruction of Liceu after the Fire in 1994

Since 1986, there have been plans to expand and modernize the building. Based on these plans, made by Solà Ignasi de Morales, the Liceu was rebuilt. The original was almost completely preserved, since as many undamaged parts as possible were reused.

Gran Teatre del Liceu

Thus, the magnificent foyer and the equally splendid hall of mirrors were reconstructed according to the original rooms. Below the concert hall, an auditorium with a restaurant was built as a break room for the guests, and the stage was equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The curtain has been modernized and was designed by Antoni Miró. The upper floor seats got TV technology installed, since not all seats have a view on the stage. The geometry of the otherwise faithfully recreated concert hall has been slightly adapted to modern acoustics.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu reopened in 1999 and now has nearly 2,300 seats on 6 levels. The Liceu is an integral part of Barcelona's culture of today.

The financing of opera operations in the Liceu

From the very beginning, since the opening in 1847, theater and opera productions have been awarded to investors, who also received the proceeds from ticket sales. Excluded from this were the seats reserved for the Societat.

However, from around 1975 it became apparent that this type of financing was no longer profitable. A sponsorship from the city of Barcelona, the Catalan regional government and the Societat del Gran Teatre del Liceu, the official name of the "Societat de Propietaris", took over the management of the house. The purely private form of sponsorship financing was converted to public financing in 1980 to save one of the internationally most famous operas.

The fire on January 31, 1994 almost completely destroyed the Liceu. This had an extraordinary social impact on Catalan society. There was debate as to whether the house should be rebuilt at all. A new legal basis was created for the reconstruction of this symbolic building. The assets and all rights were transferred to a foundation, the Fundació del Gran Teatre del Liceu. From now on, the house was completely in public ownership.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu Opera House in Barcelona

tour liceu barcelona

I have a confession. I’ve been dreaming of going to Spain for years before I finally took a trip there . But what inspired me to go wasn’t the iconic Sagrada Familia basilica or the famously abstract house at Park Güell. Instead the image I fell in love with and dreamed about seeing was of towering golden balconies bathed in a soft glow of light dotted with rows of rich red seats. I wanted to see the  Gran Teatre del Liceu Opera House in Barcelona.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu Opera House in Barcelona

Barcelona's opera house, the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu is one of the largest opera houses in all of Europe. Its doors opened in April of 1847 on Barcelona’s La Rambla street, now a popular touristy destination. The theater has since burned down and been rebuilt twice, most recently in 1994. It seats 2,292 people throughout six levels in a horseshoe-like shape, a typical Italian-style theater that maximizes acoustics (but minimizes some visibility).

The outside of The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

Outside the Opera House

The modest facade of the building, one of the few remaining features from the original 1847 building, disguises the stunning size and amazing beauty of the theater within it.

The lobby of the Grand Liceu in Barcelona.

Inside the Opera House

But even my first step inside blew me away; the Liceu’s lobby opens with a striking staircase contrasted with a black and white checkered floor and seafoam-colored walls.

The theater itself is even more amazing.  Intricate gold details cover every surface, juxtaposed with thousands of red seats.

The seats of the Grand Liceu Opera House in Barcelona from above.

The Hall of Mirrors

Surrounding the theater are other rooms, equally as beautiful. The Hall of Mirrors was my favorite. On the day I toured Liceu, the room was set up for a small piano concert. On the night of the opera, the room was used as a bar where we drank Cava during intermissions.

A Night at the Opera

On our last night in Barcelona , I saw my first Russian opera at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. I was surprised how fitting the Russian language is for opera (although I was thankful for the English supertitles on the chair in front of me, like at the Met in New York City). The production, however, was stale and awkward.

Even though I dreamed of The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona for months before I arrived in Spain (I even had my opera tickets before I booked my flight!), there was nothing like actually being inside the opera house. That view — that moment — is one that I will never forget.

Gran Teatre del Liceu

The Gran Teatre del Liceu stands as a remarkable emblem of the collaborative spirit among enthusiasts of culture and the arts. Back in 1837, a consortium of private individuals conceived the ambitious vision of establishing a premier opera house befitting Barcelona's burgeoning reputation as a cultural hub. Thus, on the auspicious date of April 4th, 1847, the Renaissance-inspired Gran Teatre del Liceu proudly unveiled its doors to the city of Catalonia. Nevertheless, the theater faced a turbulent future marked by two fires, one in 1861 and another in 1994. On both occasions, Catalan society rallied around its cultural cornerstone, ensuring the theater's reconstruction. Restored to its original grandeur yet equipped with modern amenities, the new Liceu emerged, poised to usher in the 21st century. On October 7th, 1999, the doors of the revitalized Liceu reopened to the public.

Presently, the Saló de Miralls, commonly referred to as the Hall of Mirrors, stands as one of the Liceu's most ancient sections still in existence. Adorned with paintings depicting renowned musicians and dancers, it offers a captivating glimpse into the past. Exploring the Gran Teatre del Liceu on a guided tour unveils these typically hidden spaces, rendering it a truly iconic experience.

Gran Teatre del Liceu Tour Reviews

We scheduled a tour while checking out the sights on La Rambla and had time to run across the street for lunch before our tour. Our guide spoke several languages and smoothly switched from English to the other couples language. She was very informative and gave us an excellent tour full of interesting history. The opera house was founded in 1847 for the high class society. It was rebuilt in 1999 after a fire in 1994. It is one of the most well known opera houses. The inside is lovely and the auditorium has 5 tiers, seats 2,292 with no royal box. The 4th and 5th tiers are the cheapest seats, the main floor seats are made of iron and red velvet and there are luxurious boxes called Banyeres. Worth taking the time for a guided tour.

Kleime, Tripadvisor 2019

Joined the English speaking guided tour for the opera house and private club. The opera auditorium is lovely but the lobby and salons before it are even better. The arts and crafts style of the private club contrasts with the Grecian style of lobby area. Lots to see. Photos welcome. No shop or cafe. Our tour guide was great. Her English and knowledge of Spanish history and art history was excellent. There were only three of us. We sat down in the auditorium and ended up talking about politics and history for ages. She was in no hurry to move us along. Highly recommend. Location on La Rambla also really convenient for metro and shops.

Charli XCX Plots 2024 International ‘BRAT' Tour Dates

Charli XCX announced the international dates for her 2024 Brat tour on Monday (March 25), which will be a mix of live concerts and what she's dubbed "partygirl" events. The run will kick off with a set at Primavera Sound Barcelona on June 1, followed by shows in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Mexico City before winding down on June 22 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Just hours after announcing the dates, the singer noted on Instagram that all the shows were already sold out .

At press time Charli had not yet announced the release date for BRAT , her sixth full-length album, though she did recently reveal that it is out this summer, contains 15 songs and is 41:23 long. The follow-up to her 2022 album Crash has been advanced by the uptempo first single, "Von Dutch."

Speaking to Billboard at this year's 2024 Women in Music event, Charli said that BRAT is a club record meant to evoke the illegal London rave scene of the early 2000s where she started performing as a 14 and 15-year-old, produced from a tight collection of sounds to create "this unique minimalism that is very loud and bold."

She also said that the album is "very direct" eschewing "metaphor and flowery lyricism" for language that is closer to the way she talks to her friends in text messages. "This record is all the things I would talk about with my friends, said exactly how I would say them. It's in ways very aggressive and confrontational, but also very conversational and personal," she said. "And not in that boring way where artists are like, ‘This is my most personal record.' To me, it feels like listening to a conversation with a friend.
