Everything you need know about Sirsi, a small town in Karnataka

Photo of Dr Sheetal

Have you ever longed to take a vacation merely to experience the delight of being idle? You wouldn't have a list of tourist attractions to cross off, cafes to visit, or adventurous pursuits to partake in; a few days could just spread out in front of you. Time would fly by while taking in the majestic Western Ghats, exploring new routes, chatting with the welcoming inhabitants, savoring delicious home-cooked meals, and taking in the peace of a relaxed village lifestyle.

Sirsi is a tiny town in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada District that is situated in the Western Ghats. Cardamom, pepper, vanilla, and areca nut farming are well known in Sirsi. The main attractions of these locations, aside from the bliss of doing nothing, are the stunning natural panorama, the cordial residents, and the mouthwatering original homemade food.

When one hears the word Sirsi, pictures of luscious green forests, beautiful streams, and thundering waterfalls come to mind. A wealth of both natural and man-made marvels can be found in and around Sirsi. Everyone can find something. For those who enjoy the outdoors, there are numerous waterfalls, woodland paths, natural rock formations, and wildlife; for the religious, there are temples and ashrams; and for history buffs, there are historic sites. Here are a few tourist attractions in and near Sirsi.

1. Shri Marikamba Temple: 1 km

Large, intricately painted temple with centuries of history that is renowned for its Kaavi murals.

2. Unchalli falls: 35 km

A 5 km somewhat challenging climb leads to a 116 m spreading waterfall perched on a tiered cliff edge.

3. Sahasralinga: 14 km

There are hundreds of carved Shiva linga on rocks and statues of the Nandi bull at this riverbank shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.

4. Shri Madhukeshwara Shivalaya Banavasi: 24 km

The honey-colored Shiva Lingam in the sanctum is whence the Madhukeshwara temple gets its name. One of the earliest temples in Karnataka, the temple was built in the ninth century. A member of the Kadamba dynasty named Mayura Sharma ordered it.

5. Shivaganga Falls: 37 km

Shivaganga is a stunning waterfall in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district. It is one of the Western Ghats' most well-known waterfalls. This fall is encircled by a dense, perpetually green forest, which offers a stunning view of the entire valley. The falls offer swimming as well. The Ganeshpal Island is a tiny island that is close to the falls. Due to a modest Ganesh artwork inside a nearby little temple, this place got its name from the Hindu god Ganesh. Trekking around the waterfall is wonderful.

6. Benne Hole Waterfalls: 36 km

The branch of the Aghanashini River, which flows through the Devimane Ghat region of the Western Ghats, creates Benne Hole Falls. To get there, one must first travel to a village called Kasage from Sirsi; from there, it is about 5 km to the falls; the first 3 km can be travelled by jeep, and the remaining 2 km must be travelled by trekking.

7. Gudavi Bird Sanctuary: 39 km

In Karnataka's Malenadu region, the Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is a popular tourist site. More than 200 different bird species from many different bird families can be found here. These birds are protected by the woods and a lake that exists naturally. It is a tiny seasonal lake that typically overflows during the rainy season. Different avian species move across the world at different times of the year to breed. For bird watchers to get a better glimpse at the birds, a platform has been constructed.

8. Shri Kshetra Manjaguni

Sri Venkataramana Temple is a revered Hindu temple located near Manjuguni in the Uttara Kannada region of Karnataka, 13 kilometres from Benne Hole Falls and 27 km from Sirsi. It is one of the most well-known pilgrimage sites in Uttara Kannada and one of the top Sirsi attractions. The Manjuguni Temple in the Sahyadri Hills is devoted to Lord Venkataramana and Goddess Padmavathi.

Activities in Sirsi

1. Trekking and hiking: To take in the breathtaking landscape, you can create your own trekking and hiking tracks in the highlands.

2. Go Local: Travel to the surrounding towns to engage in some sightseeing, try some ethnic cuisine, and indulge in some retail therapy (shopping).

3. Consume Local Food: There is no better way to enjoy Sirsi than through its delectable cuisine because Sirsi is not a commercialized tourist destination and so preserves its authentic charm and homely flavors.

When visiting Sirsi, there are few treats you should taste.

 Todadevu: A unique variety of thin-crust dosa called todadevu is created from freshly squeezed sugarcane juice. (Instead of sugar, Sirsi's local delicacies typically contain jaggery.)

 Kesaribat: Kesaribat is a unique confection made from a tiny, aromatic rice, saffron, sugar and ghee. Usually, it is cooked during special occasions like weddings or festivals.

In Sirsi Holi is observed in Sirsi with a distinctive Carnival. The "Bedara Vesha" folk dance is performed starting five days before the festival day itself. Every other year, the festival is held in the town, which draws a sizable throng from all over India over the course of the five days.

Best time to Visit:

March to May: Summer

October to February: Winter

How to Reach:

By Road: Several state highways connect Sirsi to other regions of the state. To reach Sirsi, there are three mountain roads, also known as the Ghat portion.

1. Devimane Ghat Road via Katgal, Devimane, and Amminali from Kumta 15 total hairpin turns in total.

2. The Vaddi Ghat Road via Achave, Yana Rock Mountain, and Devanahalli from Ankola 21 total hairpin turns overall.

3. Doddamane Ghat Road via Mavingundi, Siddapura, and Kansoor from Kumta 15 total hairpin turns in total.

Must Read: highest peak in karnataka

During rainy seasons, some roads may be hazardous to travel on due to slick conditions. However, due to the monsoon, these roads are beautiful throughout the months of June to October.

Via train: The Talguppa and Kumta railhead is the closest. Sirsi is 54 km away from Talguppa. Sirsi is 62 km away from Kumta. Around 76 km separate Haveri Railway Station from Sirsi. From there, trains go to a number of significant cities, including Hubli, Davangere, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Salem, Madurai, and Tirunelveli.

By Air: The closest airports are in Hubli and Belgaum, which are both about 2.5 hours and 5 hours drive from Sirsi respectively. Belgaum is connected to Bangalore, while Hubli is connected to Mumbai, Chennai, Mangalore and Belgaum. Dabolim Airport Goa is the closest international airport.

Sahasralinga, thousand shivalingas in shalmala river.

Sirsi is the heart of Uttara Kannada nested in the lush green Western Ghats. Almost every road from here takes you to a scenic place. This time while visiting Sirsi, we decided to take a few small trips from around the town. We have already introduced you to Vibhuti Falls, Yana Rock, and Mirjan Fort . Now, come to Sahasralinga an ancient site on the riverbed of river Shalmala.

Table of Contents

Nandi sculpture and Shivalinga's in Shalmala river at Sahasralinga, Sirsi

Sahasralinga in Shalmala River at Sonda near Sirsi

Shivalinga on the banks of Shalmala river

About 17 km from Sirsi, near the village of Sonda, quietly flows the river Shalmala. Surrounded by forests a part of this river hides an incredible heritage and a piece of history.

Nandi Statue at Sahasralinga, Sirsi

The bed of the Shalmala River has huge rocks – some of them can be called boulders. In dark grey color, they seem to be hard granite stones.

Close-up of a carved Shivalinga in Shalmala river

The big and small stones have Shivalingas carved on them. Legend is that there are more than a thousand Linga hence the name Sahasralinga. Most of them even have the Nandi – Shiva’s vehicle carved on them. Some stones here even have more than one Shivalingas. Some of them were half-finished and I could see the outline of the Shivalinga carved on them. As I walked in the knee-deep waters of the river, I was surprised to see a Shivalinga or two on almost every rock. Two huge boulders on the side had Nandi carved on them.

Naga Stone at Sahasralinga, Sirsi

I also found some Naga images here including one of the Nag Devi. How can Shiva be represented without Nandi and Nag?

Nag Devi sculpture at Sahasralinga

I also saw a few stones piled on each other balanced on the rocks. It reminded me of my trip to Spiti Valley and the Inukshuk I saw in Canada. Some symbols are so universal.

Legend of Sahasralinga

A small board there tells the story of the place.

Shivalinga's in Shalmala river top view

The king of Sonda or Swadi Akasappa Nayaka has no children. He was advised by a priest to make 1008 Shivalingas to be blessed with children. So, the king had every stone at the bed of the Shalmala River converted into a Shivalinga.

The story goes that he then had children. So, these are votive Linga as in something made to get something in return. In Hindi, we would call them Ichhapoorti Shivalingas or wish-fulfilling Shivalingas.

Shivalinga's carved on rocks in Shalmala river at Sahasralinga, Sirsi

Not much is known about the history of these thousand-and-eight Shivalingas.

The Nandi sculpture in the image below is the largest one here. I guess it is about 6 ft tall, 12 feet long, and 5 feet thick. Potentially weighing a few tons. Therefore I suppose all these sculptures were in-situ carved on the rocks existing on the river bed.

Giant Nandi or Basava sculpture carved on the rocks

Some of the large rocks on the river bed also have carvings depicting mythological stories. Like the image below, in the background, a Nandi and Shivalinga can be seen.

Carvings on rocks in the river bed

When to visit Sahasralinga

The best time to see these Shivalingas is from October to March when there is less water in the River Shalmala. During the monsoon, most of these are submerged in the monsoon-fed river.

Public transport does not take you to the spot. So we hired a cab to visit the place. The surroundings are lush green. One can enjoy walking around and can explore birding, flora & fauna.

There is a shop that caters to the basic needs of visitors like drinking water, snacks, or munchings.

A cursory Google search did not reveal anything new that has not been heard about the place. High time the Government and/or its arms like ASI carry out/encourages research up and downstream of the river to discover more of this valuable heritage. For example, there is no exact number of Shivalingas found in this river bed.

Cable-stayed bridge over Shalmala river

Cable Bridge

Nearby there is a cable-stayed bridge leading to the village across the river. Go on a walk on the cable bridge to get a top view of the river and a better view of the landscape.

Landscape view from Cable bridge near Sahasralinga

I wish some effort was made to keep the river and its banks clean. It is pathetic to see anything being thrown in the river and the dirty banks of the river.

Stroll on Cable Bridge near Sahasralinga, Sirsi

I am still trying to find the significance of making a Thousand or more Shivalingas in one place. I am sure there was logic or a reason for it as these are found in many places in India and other places that followed Hinduism. Some of these places are:

Siam Reap River – Cambodia as mentioned here

Pashupatinath Temple – Nepal

Jangamwadi Math – Varanasi

Sahastralinga Talav – Patan, Gujarat

Ruins of Warangal Fort – Telangana

I am sure there are more places that have similar Lingas. You wonder if they were all carved to get a wish fulfilled or if it was a way for devotees to thank the Lord when their wishes were fulfilled.

Is it possible that there was a tradition of carving so many Shivalingas?

Following are some more Tourist Places to visit in and around Sirsi, Karnataka.

Sirsi Marikamba Temple

Front facade of Marikamba Temple, Sirsi

This 17th CE temple in red and white belongs to the presiding deity Sri Marikamba Devi. The Temple is considered one of the Shaktipeeth temples dedicated to Devi. You can see the local Kavi art displayed on its walls.

Banavasi is known for rural tourism projects. Historically, it was the capital of Kadamba kings who ruled from here.

9th CE Madhukeshawara temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is the main attraction of Banavasi besides its serene rural life. Temple is a stone full of idols, the main ones include that of Parvati and Nandi.

Banavasi is well known for fresh sugarcane jaggery that you can taste as fresh as possible.

Banavasi is about 20 KM away.

anu ji, there is 0ne 1000 linga temple and a site having 1000 shivalingas in tamil nadu, near salem. i had visited this place 2 years back when i had gone for an international seminar in tiruchengode in the district. check the dtails. om namah shivaaya 1

Thank you, Dr. Karthik for the information. Will check it out as and when I get to travel to Salem or around.

Very happy to read about the Sirsi shivalingas on the auspicious day of Shivaratri today (Feb 13, 2018). More than 1000 Siva Lingas and other rock relief carvings of Vishnu, Lakshmi, Brahma, Rama, and Hanuman are also found along a 150m stretch of the Stung Kbal Spean River in Cambodia, which I visited two years ago. This place is about 25 KM away from the main Angkor group of monuments. It is commonly known as the “The River of a Thousand Lingas“. The motifs for stone carvings are mainly Siva lingas, depicted as neatly arranged projections that cover the surface of a sandstone bed rock, and linga designs. The carving of vestiges began with the reign of King Suryavarman I and ended with the reign of King Udayadityavarman II; these two kings ruled between the 11th and 12th centuries. The 1000 lingas are attributed to a minister of Suryavarman I during the 11th century, and these were carved by hermits who lived in the area. Inscriptions at the site testify to the fact that most of the sculpting was done during the reign of Udayadityavarman II who also consecrated a golden linga here in 1059 CE. The archaeological site in Kbal Spean river was discovered in 1969 by a French ethnologist Jean Boulbet. But further exploration was cut off due to the Cambodian Civil War. The site regained prominence for safe visits from 1989.

Srinivas ji – I hope to visit Cambodia sometime and explore the Shivalingas there too.

There is another set of saharashlingas i have noted some are : 1.Pateshwar temple in Satara 2.Kotilingeshwara temple,Kolar 3.Somnathapura near Hampi. 4.Gorakshanath cave temple but only 108 shivlings

Thank you, Viraat. I will look out for these temples when I visit these places.

This place seems so picturesque and the landscape is truly stunning, Anuradha! Is a day trip enough to explore this place?

Agness – you can do a day trip from Sirsi or Gokarna – easily.

I have literally never heard of this place or knew that these statues existed. How cool to see such art in a river. My favorite is probably the Giant Nandi.

Leah – It is a mystery how they carved the rock bed of the river. Giant Nandi statues is a tradition of Karnataka – the state where Sahasralinga is located.

An Inukshuk is exactly what I thought of when I saw those stones piled up! This must have been a fascinating place to visit and I hope to see it one day.

Theresa – I visited it right after my Canada visit, so Inukshuk is all I could see, although this symbol is quite universal in mountains.

This was such a lovely read, I felt like I learned so much! Very beautiful too 🙂

Glad that you enjoyed reading about Sahasralinga. It is a beautiful and a unique site.

Wow! that’s a new one for me and Quite a fascinating layout 🙂 love the carvings!

Veidehi – Not many know about this fantastic and unique place. I am hoping that some people like you would discover it through IndiTales.

So interesting to see carvings of gods and goddesses on the stones in the river, from years ago! The place looks quite intriguing, even though I am not really a religious person. Love how you’re exploring our beautiful country so extensively!

Medha – In India art and religion are intertwined. You have to understand one to know the other. There is so much more in India to explore.

Wow! That’s something you won’t easily find elsewhere. Is it a safe place to visit?

Kate – True, such examples are very few, I mention few of them in the post.

Interesting carvings on the stones. Love how art and religion are linked together in India. Such an interesting place

Mellisa – In India art and religion co-exist, you would hardly find one without the other. I am glad you observed that connection, not many do.

There are just so many gods and stories in India, it’s always hard to follow. I enjoyed visiting Hampi a lot and there were also many carvings into stones. It’s impressive 1008 … and also interesting, as you mentioned was it done when the wish was fulfilled or was it made to fulfill the wish? To visit this place the season really is important, otherwise it’s all hidden. Thank you for showing us such a special place!

Melanie – if you remember the 3-4 main Gods of India – Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, and Ganesha, you are doing good. Yes, to see Sahasralinga you need to go during the dry season, else the sculptures stay submerged.

What a legendary site. I’ve always been fascinated about the many legends and myths in India. It was so nice to read about my most ‘lustful’ country which I’ve not visited. It’s quite sad to read that the river is not maintained, there should create more awareness to stop this. And those carvings though. There are so much to keep one busy in Sahasralinga

Lydia, you have to come to India to see the wonders it has. Hope IndiTales will inspire you to visit India soon.

Oh wow, such incredible rock carvings unassumingly there in the river and banks! Sahasralinga sounds like a really interesting place to visit – thanks for the tip on October to March; yes, I can imagine the monsoon would submerge everything worth seeing!

Megan – Have you been tempted enough to visit India or not yet?

I made it to Marikamba and Banvasi but not this. Such a big loss for me. The story is interesting. I saw similar lings in Cambodia. Ekambarnathar Temple in Tamil Nadu has 1008 lingas but those are inside temple complex and not out in open.

Indrani – there should always be another reason to come back :-). I am yet to go to Cambodia which I assume is very similar to this one. Inside the temple complexes, there are many examples of 1008 lingas.

What an amazing place. It looks like a wonderful mixture of art, nature and spiritualism. I’d never heard of such a thing before! Did the king get everything he wanted from the act?

Yes, the king got what he wanted from the act of erecting 1008 shivalingas at River Shalmala.

The carved stoned are fascinating, I wonder how they got there? They are very interesting carvings. They must be beautiful to see up close and quite tranquil in the river.

Lucy – as I mention in the story, it was done to fulfill the wish of having children.

This place is new for me. Thanks for posting such type of Blog. Enjoyed reading post on your blog.

Glad you discovered a new destination with IndiTales.

This seems to be new destination for me, can you please tell me if its good to travel in next weekend and isn’t it will be too hot.

Kundan – it would be hot, but then you can always go early morning or evenings.

यहां भ्रमण अभी बाकी है।

पंक्ति में दाल दीजिये, आज नहीं तो कल जाना हो ही जायेगा।
