Everything you need to know about BHM — including where to find the best pre-flight barbecue — according to an Alabama-based travel editor.

Tracey Minkin is an award-winning writer and editor whose work has appeared in national and regional publications including Southern Living , Coastal Living , Travel + Leisure , Outside , Food & Wine , Men's Journal , Veranda , and many more.

travel birmingham airport

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is not only an easy to navigate and recently modernized airport that’s just 10 minutes from downtown Birmingham, it also smells enticingly of barbecue from before sunrise to long after sunset (thanks to a beloved local barbecue restaurant just on the departures side of security).

Serving the thriving tourism, business, and healthcare hub of Birmingham, Alabama, as well as offering access to University of Alabama and other university campuses and vacation destinations including the Gulf Coast, Alabama’s largest airport is just the right size for easy use. Airport parking is steps from the single terminal, and its one security area serves three small concourses with decent shopping, eating, and drinking. Five major airlines fly in and out of BHM with more than 100 flights daily, to 23 cities.

Thanks to its $201.6 million modernization in 2014, the Birmingham airport features amenities that include dependable (and free) Wi-Fi, play spaces for children, private nursing and meditation rooms, and several striking pieces of public art including a long wall mural of native plants and a moving photographic tribute to deceased civil rights pioneer Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth (for whom the airport was named in 2008).

Where is Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport?

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is located at 5900 Messer Airport Highway, in Birmingham, Alabama. Generally a 10-minute drive from downtown Birmingham, the airport is located near Interstates 59 and 20 east of the city. (Note: Expect significant traffic delays and rerouting through March 2020 at the 59/20 interchange in downtown Birmingham because of highway construction. This will most affect eastbound travelers coming to the airport. Go here for updates .) The airport is about 140 miles west of Atlanta, 105 miles south of Huntsville, AL, and just less than 300 miles north of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

How do I get to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport?

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is reached by car using major interstate highways ( get directions here ). Ground transportation options include limousine and shuttle services , taxi service, and Uber (rates from downtown start at $11). One mass transit bus route does include the Birmingham airport, but there are no dedicated public transportation services to the airport.

How many terminals are at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport?

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is the largest airport in Alabama in terms of passenger traffic, but it’s still wonderfully small and easy to navigate with just one terminal of three concourses (A, B, and C). Baggage claim and ground transportation are on the lower level; airline desks, shops and restaurants, a single security checkpoint, and concourses and departure gates are all contained on the upper level.

Which airlines fly in and out of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport?

Five major airlines — American Airlines , Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines , Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines — fly to and from BHM to 23 cities. BHM has more than 100 flights daily, and processes more than 2.6 million passengers per year.

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Food and Facilities

The food and facilities at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) suit its small size. Four baggage carousels, vending machines, ATMs, a service animal relief area and a small Starbucks are on the lower level. (The lower level also features a fascinating photographic exhibit on the life and times of civil rights pioneer, the Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, for whom the airport was named in 2008.)

On the departure level, the pre-security area has ticketing and check-in facilities for five airlines, plus a Barber Motorsports-themed store that sells gifts, travel accessories, and brand merchandise from Barber. Also on the pre-security side of the airport, Starbucks sells coffee, pastries and snacks, and The Local Rustic Market features grab-and-go options.

When it comes to facilities, each of three concourses has a small but appropriate number of shops and restaurants, plus child play areas, nursing and meditation rooms, one ATM, and several major pieces of public art that feature Alabama’s history and natural environment.

One security area processes all users of the airport. On the departures side of security as part of Concourse B, an airy observation rotunda features floor-to-ceiling windows, rocking chairs and small tables and chairs. Directly across from security, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, a popular Birmingham-based chain, offers a menu of Southern dishes along with more traditional fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and bar service. A small grab-and-go outlet sits adjacent.

At the Concourse A/B intersection, a Hudson News (themed for Birmingham’s Alabama Theatre) sells the typical mix of gifts, snacks, travel accessories, and Alabama souvenirs (Roll Tide!). A small food-court-style area features Chick-Fil-A (a well-known Southern chain known for its chicken sandwiches and which is closed on Sundays) and The Great American Bagel, which offers bagels, sandwiches, and salads. This is also the location of the sole ATM on the departures level.

Concourse A features a CNN Newsstand outlet, a Starbucks, and Birmingham Brewhouse, which has a pub-style menu and features its own craft beers.

On Concourse B/C intersection, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame shop sells collegiate merchandise so popular in this land of SEC football. A small food court area features Starbucks and Grounded in Birmingham, offering burgers, sandwiches, and salads.

On Concourse C, Ebony Newsstand sells gifts, travel accessories, and Ebony Magazine merchandise, and Talladega Grille offers tailgate-style food options and bar service in a NASCAR-themed environment.

The entire airport features free Wi-Fi (TheAuthorityLAN).

Car rentals at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Car rental facilities at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport are located on the ground level of the parking deck, which is also the same location for picking up and dropping off rental cars. The rental car facility features the following companies: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless , and Thrifty.

Parking at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Parking at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is very accessible to the terminal entrances, ample (5,000 spaces), easy to navigate, and affordable. Hourly parking is on Level 3 of the sole parking area—a covered deck—and costs $1/hour or $24/day. Daily parking is on Levels 2, and 4-7 of the same parking deck (some sections of certain levels are not covered) and costs $1/hour and $12/day. (Parking for oversized vehicles is available on Level 1.) An Economy Lot offers 700 spaces and the most affordable rate ($1/hour and $10/day) and features complimentary shuttle service to the terminal. Valet Parking services are located curbside at the upper level and cost $16.95 per day and should be reserved online in advance .

Hotels near Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

The hotels closest to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport are the Ramada by Wyndham Birmingham Airport and Holiday Inn Birmingham-Airport (1.5 miles away, with complimentary shuttle service from 4:20 a.m. through midnight daily). The Holiday Inn has been recently upgraded and is the best bet for an “airport location,” although the hotel’s immediate neighborhood does not provide much to do outside of the use of the hotel (rates start at $103.55).

Downtown Birmingham, just 10 minutes away (although note traffic delays and detours while Interstates 20/59 are under construction), has a broad variety of hotels that also allow for access to the city’s thriving arts and dining scene.

Things to do near Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

The good news about Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport being so close to downtown Birmingham (a 10-minute drive), is that it means a long layover can turn into a visit to a historic peanut seller, a civil rights walk , a few hours in the city’s beautiful museum of art, a platter of BBQ , hanging out at a local craft brewery, or a refreshing stroll through botanical gardens or the zoo . Birmingham is an area rich with smaller enclaves, so consider spending your time exploring areas like trendy Avondale or the boutique and café-rich villages of Mountain Brook (Crestline Village, Mountain Brook Village, and English Village). For a fascinating look at the mining and steel industries that created Birmingham, make a twin visit (if time allows) to Vulcan Park & Museum (which also has a breathtaking ridgetop view of downtown Birmingham) and the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark . (Note that some of these destinations are more than 10 minutes from BHM.)

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Birmingham Airport is an international airport serving the Midlands area of England. It's located near Birmingham, Coventry and Leicester, and is generally used for flights heading to Europe and the rest of the U.K. While the airport is relatively small, it can get busy, especially over holidays. Found a short drive from central Birmingham, it's easy to access and fairly stress-free to navigate.

Airport Code, Location, and Contact Information

Birmingham Airport is an international airport with one terminal, connecting travelers to other U.K. destinations, as well as Europe, the U.S., Asia, and the Middle East. It's often used by regional passengers heading to European holiday spots like France, Greece, and Spain. Numerous airlines fly into Birmingham—including British Airways, Lufthansa, and KLM—and many offer connecting flights through Europe to and from the U.S. The airport has good links to transportation, making it an ideal choice if you're visiting a destination in central England.

Security is notoriously tight in all U.K. airports, including at Birmingham Airport. Be ready to fit all your carry-on liquids into a single plastic bag, which is provided before the security lines. Check your luggage if you have a lot of toiletries to avoid any hassle. Passengers will also need to remove shoes, belts, and jackets, and take any electronics out of bags. Arrive early if traveling during a busy period, like the summer holidays or over a bank holiday weekend.

There are several options for parking at Birmingham Airport, which vary based on distance from the terminal and by price. These include valet parking, multi-story parking garages with covered parking spots, and uncovered parking lots accessible via shuttle bus. The lots range from a one-minute walk to the main terminal to a 10-minute shuttle bus ride to reach the airport terminal, but all of the parking options are easily accessible for travelers.

All of Birmingham Airport's parking lots can be booked online in advance, which guarantees visitors a spot for their trip. Longer stays may be eligible for discounts of up to 70 percent. There is also a designated drop-off lot for those who are driving passengers to the airport. This lot allows stays of up to 20 minutes for free. Disabled parking is available in the valet lot, as well as in several of the other lots, and there are dedicated motorcycle spaces available in Car Park 1.

Birmingham Airport is only 8 miles from central Birmingham, which makes the drive relatively quick and painless. Insert the postcode  B26 3QJ into your Sat-Nav system or into Google Maps to find the best directions. Note that rush hour typically takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., so it's best to allow for extra time when heading to Birmingham Airport during those times.

The airport serves other cities around the Midlands, including Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Leeds, Coventry, and Worcester. Birmingham Airport is located off the M24, a main highway that connects much of the Midlands. Your best bet is to use Google Maps or a Sat-Nav for clear directions to and from the airport.

Birmingham Airport has good connections to publication transportation. It is directly connected to Birmingham International Station by a free "Air-Rail Link" system, which takes approximately two minutes, and there are also buses and taxis available.

  • Trains: Birmingham International Station connects Birmingham Airport with around 100 towns and cities throughout the U.K. Several train companies operate out of the station, including Avanti West Coast Trains, West Midlands Railway, Cross Country and Transport For Wales. Birmingham New Street station, in central Birmingham, is 10 minutes by direct train, with seven services per hour from Birmingham International Station. Trains to London operate out of Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham New Street. Use the Trainline website or app to search the best route.
  • Buses: The Midlands' public transport, known as TfWM, operates several bus services from Birmingham Airport. The National Express WM buses connect the airport terminal with Birmingham City Centre, and also stop at Birmingham International Interchange. There are also long-distance coach services, operated by National Express and Megabus, that offer 120 daily services to 35 destinations around the U.K. Tickets can be purchased in advance or when boarding.
  • Taxis and Ubers: Arrow Cars is the official private taxi service for Birmingham Airport and it is the only taxi company allowed to pick up and drop off on the terminal front. Cars can be booked in advance by phone or online, or via their mobile app, Arrow Cars Birmingham. Licensed black cabs are also available, all of which are wheelchair accessible. The taxi rank can be found outside the terminal and no prior booking is needed. Uber runs in Birmingham and visitors can book a car via the app upon arrival.

Birmingham Airport has a variety of food and drink options available to passengers, before and after security. There are several take-away restaurants in the terminals, as well as sit-down options for those who have more time. The airport notably has several restaurant before security, for those who have extra time or want to say goodbye to family and friends over a meal.

  • Pret a Manger:  One of the most popular takeaway spots in the U.K., Pret a Manger has a great selection of to-go food like sandwiches, salads and pastries. They also have vegetarian selections, along with non-dairy milk options for coffee and tea.
  • All Bar One:  All Bar One offers globally-inspired breakfast and lunch dishes in a bar setting. It's popular for cocktails and an expansive wine list, and it's a great pick for those on a longer layover. Birmingham Airport has two, one before security and one after security.
  • Factory Bar and Kitchen: For a sit-down meal that is guaranteed to arrive with 13 minutes of ordering, head to Factory Bar and Kitchen, which serves three meals a day along with bar offerings. They also offer a dedicated children's menu.
  • Bottega Prosecco Bar: Sit down for a glass of wine or Prosecco before your flight at Bottega, which also serves breakfast, cheese and cured meats, salads, and sandwiches.

There are some shopping options at Birmingham Airport, although it doesn't quite have the selection of bigger airports like Heathrow. World Duty Free can be found after security.

  • WHSmith Books:  Found after security, WHSmith is a chain that sells books, magazines, and snacks, as well as Scottish and British souvenirs. WHSmith Books is a separate bookstore with lots of titles to pick from, as well as magazines and newspapers.
  • Superdry: Superdry sells British-made clothing for men and women, with a Japanese and vintage American influence. It's a good spot to pick up a hoodie or accessory for the road.
  • Rituals: Find your signature fragrance at Rituals, which sells scents and gifts for the body and home.
  • Seacret: Seacret sells skincare made from ingredients taken from the Dead Sea.
  • Next: Next is a British high street shop selling affordable men's and women's clothing. They also have a selection for kids.

Because Birmingham's city center is so close to the airport, it's easy to spend your layover exploring some of the popular attractions downtown. Take a train or taxi into the city center via Birmingham New Street station to explore its shopping or see one of the museums. Birmingham New Street has a left luggage service , in case you don't want to haul your bags around town. If you prefer to stay close, Birmingham Resorts World, a shopping and cinema complex, is adjacent to the airport.

For longer layovers, there are several nearby hotels. Book into the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, Hotel ibis Styles Birmingham NEC and Airport or Moxy Birmingham NEC for a nice overnight stay. The Genting Hotel , at Resorts World, is another good hotel, with a notable spa and a modern vibe.

There are five exclusive lounges at Birmingham Airport. These include the Emirates lounge, Aspire Lounge, Clubrooms, and No1 Lounges. Emirates lounge is for qualified passengers only, but travelers can pay to access Aspire, Clubrooms, and No1. All of the lounges offer free Wi-Fi, food, and drinks. FastTRACK passport control and FastTRACK security are also available for qualified passengers. Several of the paid lounges accept pre-bookings, which passengers can do on the Birmingham Aiport website .

Passengers can access free Wi-Fi at Birmingham Airport in 30-minute intervals while in the terminal. To access it, open your Internet browser and create a login. Free Wi-Fi is also available in the airport lounges. Charge your phone or laptop at one of the many outlets found both before security and throughout the departure lounge. Be sure to bring along an adapter if your device uses an American plug.

Birmingham Airport Tips & Facts

  • Keep the young ones entertained at Sky Zone , a free interactive play area open to all families. Parents can also download a coloring pack for kids ahead of travel.
  • Book Express Security Lane to skip the queues after check-in, or opt for Premium Arrivals Fast Track to expedite your journey through passport control. Both can be booked in advance online.
  • There are four water refill stations located after security. Look for the most convenient ones behind Bottega Prosecco Bar & Cafe and adjacent to the restrooms behind No1 Lounge.
  • Those who want to watch the planes coming and going can head to the airport's Aircraft Viewing Area in Car Park 5. It's open 24 hours a day and has picnic benches and a great view of the runway. Note that cars parking in Car Park 5 will need to pay the hourly rates.

Food before security?

There is no pre-TSA dining at BHM. All dining is airside.

Does anyone know if this airport has a space for the business traveler to sit comfortably with their laptop?

There are seats in and near the "food court". The airport also has limited high top benches in the gate areas

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) offers a convenient and efficient experience from start to finish. Smaller in size, the airport still is well-equipped with modern facilities and amenities to meet the needs of passengers. The layout is straightforward and easy to navigate, with clear signage guiding travelers to their check-in, security and gate destinations. Check-in and security procedures are typically smooth and efficient I have TSA Pre-Check and im usually though security in less than 10 minutes. While dining and shopping options are limited compared to larger airports, BHM still offers a few restaurants and shops where travelers can grab a bite to eat or pick up last-minute essentials before your flight. The only negative is knowing which door to go out of to the parking garage when you return, if you pick the wrong one you will be doing a lot of walking searching for your car, the signage for that needs to be improved as it seems you enter and exit on different floors which does cause confusion in finding your car when you get back home. Overall, Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport provides a pleasant and stress-free travel experience, making it a convenient choice for both business and leisure travelers in the central Alabama area.

Sweet Home, Alabama! Here was my experience. AMBIANCE: The place is relatively simple. The merch really supports the local football teams. Therer's plenty of history about planes and cars here to keep you busy or educated. PARKING: N/A - There's a parking structure and the car rental area is walking distance. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great! Friendly and helpful people. Great from leaving the plane to renting a car. TL;DR OVERALL: 4 Stars. Relatively a simple airport, this is a football state and people travel around. Other than that, this was a pretty neat airport. Tips: * Remember to come early!

Woot!

I must say, for a medium size airport (medium to me is having a variety of airlines fly in and out of it, has a decent amount of food options, and you can easily access the airport without having to ride a tram to get to each gate) it's pretty decent! We got lost trying to get to the departure area, but found it eventually! It would be good to have terminal signs further out. TSA was a breeze to get though. No complaints there. I do love all of the art installations in the airport. It was great to learn about the local history in Birmingham. Overall, this is a decent airport! If you like Starbucks, there are two, one of each side of the airport.

Flying today can be stressful with all the delays, cancellations, and TSA requirements, but despite that, Birmingham Airport is one of my favorites. For the most part, it's quiet, and the lines are not that long, and the people that work there are usually always friendly and greet you with a smile. They have added some rocking chairs by a beautiful fern wall that overlook the outside. It is a calm area where you can sit and watch airplanes take off. Great place to relax before a flight.

Hate this airport. Takes FOREVER to get luggage anytime I travel through here. Zero customer service at this airport.

travel birmingham airport

I've traveled through this airport several times visiting family. It is typically clean and seems to run efficiently. Some say it's a medium-sized airport, but I see it on the smaller side. Make sure to grab snacks or something to eat before you arrive because there are very limited places to eat. I see only concourse A and B. I typically fly delta but I believe both American and Southwest also fly from here. You will most likely have to connect to a major airport from here but BHM will be an easy start to your day.

Nice little airport. With TSA Precheck, everything was nice quick and smooth. Staff at the American Airlines desk was very friendly and helpful. The airport is clean and easy to get around. Definitely don't mind flying in and out of here.

Burger King, chic fil a or a run of the mill bagel shop is all your going to get at this small airport. Unfortunately today we are stuck here for 12 hours due an accident that closed the road and led to us missing our 6 am flight. I already had a frozen bagel from the bagel place, a whopper with cheese and I'm wondering what will be next , I guess chic fil a is my other option. The operation of the airport is fantastic, easy rental car pickup and return, easy in and out , quick TSA checking and it's very clean! Love this airport even though the food is limited.

Taking off

Smaller airport easy to navigate. Has enough food options to get you through until boarding. Parking is easy and the price is great compared to other airports.

I really don't know what you could complain about at this airport except maybe the fact that there aren't you many places you can fly direct and the International in the name is laughable. It's a small airport and it has a couple of restaurants that you can sit down and eat. There's a Starbucks, two newsstands/ local shops and of course, a chik fil A. The new security is great. Didn't have to take stuff out of my bags. Very nice. The seats at the gates have charging stations. Quick and easy to get in and out of here.

Not too much to complain about here. Smallish airport but it's well run. Easy to navigate. Pickup can be a pain during busy times but it's so small I just drive around the circle till I can get the person. Drop off is a breeze. Security is good and you can get through the line fast. There's a few places to eat and newsstands tho pick up whatever you needed, forgot, reading material, and snacks. The worst part about this airport are the flights out of here are expensive and not too many direct flights. Seems like you have to fly to Atlanta to go to most places and that just adds to the cost. Best way to get a cheap flight is to either drive to Atlanta and fly out of there or book your flight as early as possible.

Birmingham Airport security delays and why passengers keep facing queues

B irmingham Airport passengers have faced persistent headaches due to persistent security issues - with the latest erupting this week. One traveller reported this week that people were 'fainting as they queued in chaotic' scenes.

Another said the 'security queue was through the terminal building and up the street'. On Tuesday evening (May 7), the Home Office confirmed that a Border Force issue was causing delays at Birmingham Airport, part of a 'nationwide issue' affecting Heathrow, Gatwick, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh and Newcastle airports as well.

Social media was awash with videos and pictures showing lengthy queues. The Home Office announced the following day, May 8, that the problem has been resolved. However, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred, with a similar situation arising in April.

READ MORE: Dog owners rave about affordable treats ideal for training that are 'big hit' with fussy pets

So, why do these problems persist and what measures are being taken to prevent them in the future? Our colleagues at Birmingham Live have been looking into this very question.

The Home Office, which oversees Border Force, confirmed there was a 'nationwide issue due to a problem with the passport eGates last night (May 7)', according to a BBC report. eGates are automated gates that use facial recognition technology to verify a person's identity, allowing them to enter the country without interacting with a Border Force officer.

Across the 15 air and rail ports in the UK, there are more than 270 e-gates available, as per the government's website, which claims they're designed to 'enable quicker travel into the UK'. However, yesterday saw staff reverting to manual checks for security processing due to a national system failure.

Have there been previous nationwide delays at security check-ins?

Just last month a similar disruption occurred, leading to extensive queues at various UK passport control areas. Initially flagged by Edinburgh Airport, the issue extended to Birmingham, Manchester, Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, and Stansted airports.

At that time, the Home Office responded by saying: "On Thursday, April 25, a technical issue affected eGates across the country. The issue was quickly identified and has now been resolved. We have comprehensively reviewed the causes and will ensure this issue does not occur again."

What's the Government's take on the recent airport delays?

Following yesterday's widespread eGate malfunction, the Home Office has confirmed the situation is now under control. An early statement on May 8 from a spokesperson announced that 'eGates at UK airports came back online shortly after midnight'.

He also reassured that 'at no point was border security compromised, and there is no indication of malicious cyber activity.' He noted that the disruptions were due to a 'system network issue' first identified around 7.50pm, resulting in over four hours of complications.

The Home Office has issued an apology to 'travellers caught up in disruption' and expressed gratitude towards 'partners, including airlines for their co-operation and support' amidst the technical difficulties. Despite initial thoughts, it seems the problem wasn't confined to eGates alone. BBC coverage indicates that even Belfast International Airport, which doesn't use eGates, reported issues with Border Force 'systems'.

What's the situation at Birmingham Airport since the issues arose?

It appreared to be business as usual at Birmingham Airport on May 8. Most flights were taking off and landing as scheduled, a trend reflected across UK airports.

How is Birmingham Airport tackling security delay concerns?

Birmingham Airport is 'building for its future', working on a new security search area designed to be 'streamlined, speedier and simpler'. Staff acknowledge that the transition period may cause 'confusion for customers', leading to changes in 'queuing and walking routes'.

A spokesperson for Birmingham Airport shared with BirminghamLive: "Birmingham Airport has invested £60m in a new security hall and scanning equipment. This major construction project, which has been ongoing for 18 months, is building for our future with the construction of a new simpler and streamlined security area for our customers.

"The building works within the terminal mean we have lost areas where customers would previously have queued for security, mainly our upstairs space. This means that the majority of our security queuing area is now downstairs."

What can I do to avoid unnecessary delays and missed flights?

The spokesperson said: "This transition from our existing security to our new security area can be confusing. Here is the best travel advice for customers travelling out of Birmingham Airport over the next few months:

  • Zone A for Jet2
  • Zone D for Emirates
  • Zones B and C for all other airlines

"Customers travelling can find all this information on our website," the Birmingham Airport spokesperson said.

Passengers queuing at Heathrow airport

E-gates back online after chaos at Heathrow and other UK airports

Home Office rules out cyber-attack as a cause of technical outage that delayed thousands of passengers at passport control

The e-gates failure that left thousands of passengers queueing at UK airports has been resolved, the Home Office has said while ruling out a cyber-attack as a cause.

Airports said passengers could expect to travel smoothly again on Wednesday after widespread delays on Tuesday evening owing to a nationwide technical outage affecting UK Border Force e-gates.

Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol airports all confirmed problems with passengers being processed through the border on Tuesday.

Border officials were left to manually process all travellers instead. Pictures shared on social media showed long queues forming at passport control at several airports.

A Home Office spokesperson said on Wednesday: “E-gates at UK airports came back online shortly after midnight.

“As soon as engineers detected a wider system network issue at 7.44pm last night, a large-scale contingency response was activated within six minutes.

“At no point was border security compromised, and there is no indication of malicious cyber-activity.” Heathrow airport’s X account also confirmed soon after midnight that systems were running as usual.

Manchester airport said a dedicated team and customer services staff were supporting passengers while UK Border Force fixed the problem.

Among delayed passengers were Sam Morter, 32, who arrived at Heathrow from Sri Lanka, said it was “pandemonium” when he got to passport control in Terminal 3, where all of the E-gates had blank screens.

He told the PA news agency: “There was a lot of Border Force officials running and scrambling around. Four or five went to man the posts and start processing the UK passports manually.

“But at the same time, hundreds of passengers started to flood into passport control, so it all of a sudden became chaotic and they couldn’t cope with the number of the people coming in.

“We weren’t given any information. There was no information on the Tannoys or from staff.”

Another affected traveller wrote on X: “Long queues at Heathrow airport where passengers are being held at arrivals for a system failure. Been here already 1 hour and the queue is only getting bigger. No communication given to anyone on what is the timeframe to sort this out.”

Another person posted video footage of the chaos and wrote: “No e-gates working. This is the current queue in Gatwick airport with lots of children and no water.”

One X user at Heathrow wrote: “Been stood here over an hour! My taxi has cancelled and at this rate I’ll be too late for a train.” Another wrote: “My daughter has been waiting in a queue for over 2 hours now after a 12-hour flight.”

There are 270 automated gates in total at 15 air and rail ports in the UK, using facial recognition to allow people to enter the country.

Passengers were already facing disrupted journeys to and from airports owing to industrial action affecting train services across the UK throughout this week until Saturday.

Border Force workers also staged a four-day strike at Heathrow in a dispute over working conditions last week.
